BY PAT DOBBINSFlorida Department of Health Hot temperatures and high humidity mean lots of sweating, and this can increase your chance of dehydration. To avoid becoming dehydrated, it is important to drink plenty of uids, especially water -even if you don't feel thirsty. Depending upon your physical activity and heat exposure during hot weather, it's a good idea to drink even more water. According to health experts, uid requirements vary from person to person. Please keep in mind that people with medical conditions, such as kidney disease, heart disease, or those who require a uid restricted diet or who have problems with uid retention, should consult a physician before increasing their uid consumption. Knowing the signs of dehydration and knowing what to do, is very important. Signs of dehydration can include excessive thirst, headache, weakness, feeling dizzy or light headed, nausea, muscle cramps, feeling overly tired or sluggish and feeling irritable. You may also experience decreased urine levels and/or urine that has a strong odor or is darker than normal. You may experience all, some or none of these signs, so the best way to avoid dehydration is to monitor your water or uid intake, modify your physical activity or reduce the length of activity according to weather conditions. Don't wait for the symptoms of dry mouth, ushed skin, headaches, lightheadedness or fatigue. You should prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of uids throughout the day. Help to avoid becoming dehydrated by staying out of the direct sun, wearing light-colored and loose- tting clothing, limiting physical activity and using fans whenever possible. If you suspect you are becoming dehydrated, get to a cool or shady area and sip cool water or uids. If your condition does not improve, seek medical attention immediately, Another heat-related illness is heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion can develop after exposure to high temperatures and inadequate or unbalanced replacement of uids. The elderly, people with high blood pressure or people who work or exercise in a hot environment are more prone to heat exhaustion. The warning signs of heat exhaustion vary, but may include heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, dilated pupils, tiredness or weakness, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, headache, nausea or vomiting, fainting, skin that feels cool and moist, pulse rate that is fast and weak and breathing that is fast and shallow. If heat exhaustion is untreated, it may progress to heat stroke. Seek medical attention immediately if your symptoms last longer than one hour, if symptoms become more severe or if you have heart problems or high blood pressure. Try to cool down by drinking cool, nonalcoholic beverages, resting in an air-conditioned environment, taking a cool shower, bath or sponge bath and wearing lightweight clothing. You should also try to prevent sun burn, which damages the skin's ability to dissipate heat. Have a safe and healthy summer! 3 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee July 3, 2014 Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion Courtesy Photo

BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe King Rail is found across the eastern half of North America from the Atlantic coast to the Great Plains and from the Gulf of Mexico to southern Canada. Its breeding range is largely restricted to the coastal plain from Texas through the lower Mississippi River Valley and all of Florida. It can also be found close the Atlantic coastline north to New Jersey. John James Audubon called the Kind Rail “Elegant Rails,” while Illinois farmers nicknamed it the “stage driver,” because of its “chckchck” call, which reminded them of a rider urging on horses. This secretive bird is more often heard than seen. They are the largest rail found in North America. These slender birds are about 15 inches long, with a 20-inch wingspan, and weigh about 13 ounces. King Rails have a small head and neck, hefty bill, sturdy legs and large feet with un-webbed toes. They look like a large chicken or large shorebird. Their neck and belly are rusty brown and contrast with the black and white barring in the sides. The upper parts are dark brown streaked with yellow. A rusty brown strip runs from the bill over the grown and down the nape of its gray face. Its plumage is rust-colored, unlike the gray or brown Clapper Rail. King Rails prefer living in extensive wetlands with shallow water and a variety of plant species, such as grasses, cattails, sedges and millet. These marsh birds prefer fresh water, but can also be found in brackish or tidal wetlands where they forage for aquatic animals and insects, and occasionally small mammals and acorns. During fall and winter, they eat more aquatic plant seeds, including millet and rice. In Florida, King Rails lay eggs as early as January, but most are laid between February and June. They form monogamous pairs who will defend their territory from other rails. The male will present its mate with food during courtship. Both sexes construct the grassy nest that is usually located in the center of a marsh. It is hidden in dense grasses and sedges and is elevated about damp ground or shallow water. Their young need drier areas for foraging. The pair incubates 10 to 12 light, yellowish eggs marked with small brown spots for 21 to 23 days. The young are dependent on their parents for food for the next nine weeks and usually edge at about 63 days of age.InformationIf you would like to participate in a bird trip to STA-5 (Stormwater Treatment Area 5) email Margaret England at sta5birding@embarqmail. com. Include your name and contact information, including an emergency cell number, the date you would like to attend and the number of participants in your party. FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATIONThe Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and our local safety partners remind motorists and students to take extra traf c safety precautions this summer. During the summer, children are at increased risk of transportation-related injuries from pedestrian, bicycle and motor vehicle crashes. FDOT offers these tips for making summer safer for everyone.Tips for MotoristsSlow down and obey all traf c laws, speed limits and traf c signals. Keep an eye out for children walking or bicycling in the street, especially where there are no sidewalks. Be alert for children playing and for those who may dart into the street without looking for traf c. When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch for children walking, biking, skating or skateboarding.Tips for ParentsBe a good role model. Always buckle up, always wear a helmet when biking, and always follow pedestrian safety rules. Supervise young children when they are walking, biking or skating. Provide your children with bright clothing so motorists can easily see them. Make sure your child is properly buckled into the appropriate child safety seat in the back seat. Safety experts advise that all children under the age of 13 should ride in the back seat. Make sure your teen driver understands and obeys all state traf c laws.Tips for Youngsters Always buckle up when riding in a car. Ride in the back seat, it’s the safest place for young people. Always wear a helmet and follow traf c safety rules when riding your bike. Learn and practice safety rules for pedestrians. It’s extremely important for you to use the sidewalk where available, look left-right-left when crossing the road and always walk facing traf c. Always cross at crosswalks, obey all traf c signs and traf c lights. Teen drivers should avoid speeding and minimize distractions (texting, talking on cell phones, eating, adjusting the radio) while driving. Never overload your vehicle. Require everyone riding with you to use safety belts. Teen drivers should be good role models for younger brothers, sisters and friends, and should help them learn and follow traf c safety rules. This compares with the national average that has not moved in the last week to $3.68/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 18.2 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 1.9 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 3.5 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 17.7 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. “Just in time for the July 4 weekend, it appears the national average has hit a new 2014 high in the last week,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “The good news is that we’re seeing signs that the peak price we hit last week is starting to unwind, but with July 4 just days away, motorists shouldn’t be expecting any big retreats in price before the weekend. The situation in Iraq has cooled, and if the situation remains calm and hurricane season continues to be a non-story, motorists will continue to see a slow decline in prices. But while the situation is slowly turning around and prices declining, it will still be the most expensive July 4 at the pump since 2008,” DeHaan said. Gas Price Update

By Lorie Ward, C.F.A.Glades County Property Appraiser The 2014 Hurricane/Storm season of cially began on June 1 and will end November 30. The 2013 Atlantic hurricane season was the rst since 1994 to feature no major hurricanes, and the rst since 1968 to feature no storms of at least Category 2 intensity. We are hoping for another season like last year. However, in the event that you do suffer damage to your property as a result of a storm or hurricane, you may want to take advantage of the online reporting feature on the property appraiser's website. You can access it by going to www. GladesFLPA.com and clicking on the last tab on the left side that says, "Hurricane/ Storm Damage Reporting." Complete all areas that pertain to your loss or damage and click the "Submit" tab at the very bottom. This will be sent directly to the property appraiser, who will be in contact with you to set up a time to meet and assess the damages. This very well could result in a tax savings to you! If you prefer, you may report your Hurricane/Storm Damage information by telephone or in person. Your phone calls, emails and of ce visits are always welcome. The property appraiser's of ce is located in Room 202 on the second oor of the Glades County Courthouse, 500 Ave J, Moore Haven. Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee July 3, 2014 8 Florida Department of HealthPredicting disasters or hazardous incidents is impossible. The next major event can come at any moment. Preparation and planning for the unexpected is the only course of action. On June 11, more than 70 emergency responders from the region joined forces with Glades County Public Safety, Local Emergency Planning Council, Florida Department of Health in Glades County and Wedgworth Fertilizer, Inc. to participate in an “Emergency Response Exercise.” After months of plan ning, Glades County Public Safety, along with support from responders in the region, demonstrated the ability to operate in response to a major incident that included scenarios involving real people with simulated serious injuries. The Planning Team worked closely together with responders and the private industry to provide a learning environ ment that mirrored a realistic incident. Kelly Brantley, judicial assistant for Glades County, also volunteered to role-play in the exercise. The simulated incident occurred at Wedgworth Fertilizer, Inc. in Moore Haven, but also included the Florida Department of Health in Glades County, which was used as a “medical staging site.” The responders and other exercise participants trained in areas that focused on emergency management, healthcare, the re service, law enforcement, emergency medical services and hazardous materials. Following a hazardous event, response organizations specializing in a variety of skills are mobilized to assist in the rescue and recovery. “This type of training al lows responders to deploy to an unfamiliar loca tion and into an unknown situation and manage the incident on arrival,” said John Gibbons, planner and program manager for Hazardous Waste/Materials Program of the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council. “This was as realistic as you can make it. You respond like you train,” said Bob Kosiba, exercise facilitator and regional planner/consultant for the Florida Department of Health. “If you don’t have reality in training, when something happens you’re not going to be as prepared. Glades at a Glance By Melissa YunasWild re Mitigation Specialist Florida Forest Service responded to a wild re in the Silver Lake area of Muse on June 26. There were two columns of smoke, so re ghters thought initially there were two wild res. It was later found that there were two columns of smoke because a small walking trail separated the wild re. The wild re was quickly contained by Florida Forest Service dozer at 4:50 p.m. If the woods are thick and engines can't safely gain access to a re, control lines are created around the re by the Florida Forest Service dozers. By creating control lines around the re, the dozer plow removes vegetation and leaves behind a strip of bare soil that stops the spread of the re. Simply put, the bulldozer is removing the fuel from the re triangle and causing the re to go out. No homes or structures were threatened and the cause is under investigation.Containment vs. Controlled? Contained The status of a wild re suppression action signifying that a control line has been completed around the re, and any associated spot res, which can reasonably be expected to stop the re's spread. Celebrating July 4th: Religious FreedomBY DR. TODD BUCK First Baptist Church of ClewistonIt is a pleasure to be able to ‘speak’ to each of you through this venue. Pastor John was a blessing to each of us, and I hope to simply continue his and Pastor Thomas’ ne contributions through this column. As July opens it seems the world stage again is in chaos over the mixture of religion and politics. It is helpful around July 4th to remember our heritage of freedom of religion, and how that is signi cant to all Americans. In his crusade for freedom of conscience, Roger Williams founded the colony of Rhode Island in 1636 as a stronghold of religious liberty after the land was deeded to him by the Narragansett Indians. He settled in Providence with 13 other householders and in one year formed the rst genuine democracy, as well as the rst church-divorced and conscience-free community in modern history. Williams felt that government is the natural way provided by God to cope with the corrupt nature of man. But since government could not be trusted to know which religion is true, he considered the best hope for true religion the protection of the freedom of all religion, along with non-religion, from the state. His famous dictum was that ‘Forced religion stinks in the nostrils of God.’ Williams was not worried that entwining church with state would tarnish the government. Rather, he believed that government interference in religion or endorsement of any individual faith would inevitably pollute religion. A refuge from rampant religious persecution, Rhode Island became home to the rst Jewish synagogue in America and a sanctuary for Quakers who were being killed and persecuted in Massachusetts and other colonies. Rhode Island was an open door to all people ; a safe harbor in a vast sea of tyranny and oppression that reected out the light of liberty. Before founding Rhode Island, Williams was exiled by law from Salem in the Massachusetts Bay Colony after being repeatedly hauled before the Salem Court for spreading “diverse, new, and dangerous opinions” that questioned the Church. The law exiling Williams was not repealed until 1936 when the Massachusetts House passed Bill 488, ending 300 years of exile. Williams brilliantly argued that citizens cannot be discriminated against on the basis of their religion, nor can they be coerced into practicing a religion that they do not wish to claim as their own. America has been a land of religious liberty ever since. The city of Philadelphia commemorated the founding of the state 50 years earlier by commissioning a bell. In the Old Testament, the 50th year is the Jubilee a year of liberty and freedom. Mindful of that fact, the citizens of Philadelphia engraved the bell with a text from Leviticus: ‘Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof’ (Lev. 25:10). It is still one of the great privileges as citizens of the United States to worship (and not worship) under the full protection of the law. May we ever be such a land!Independence Day: One Nation Under GodBY REV. SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins Church“Live as free men, yet without using your freedom as a pretext for evil, but live as servants of God. Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the King” – 1 Peter 2:16-17. The Lord, who came to this earth, came because there was something here worth saving and loving: humanity! His presence and earthly ministry is full of encounters with the worldly powers of His day, and He lived in a time when the people of His land were under foreign domination. In spite of this, Jesus commended people to “Then render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s” (Matthew 22:21, Mark 12:17, Luke 20:25). Jesus came to make this pronouncement when He was being challenged by those who attempted to entrap Him and declare himself in opposition to the government of His day. Instead, the Lord declared their responsibility to the government and that His followers should work within the body politic. His teaching impacted His followers with enough signi cance that three of the four Gospel writers recorded it. Peter’s rst epistle tells us to “live as free men…” and we are fortunate in this country to have more freedom than other countries. Peter goes on to admonish us to use our freedom wisely -something our ancestors sought and why many spend years trying to come here. Peter must have foreseen our allegiance, “…one nation under God…” when he reminded us to “live as servants of God.” The history of the country that we share and celebrate at this time is a history of recognizing God’s place in our formation and foundation; as such, we can honor our leadership who are called to hold fast to those founding principles and that we might be “…one nation under God.” It is in understanding that our leadership is to protect and make as perfect as humanly possible our liberties, justice, pursuit of happiness and life itself, and in that understanding give honor to our leadership. We in turn have an obligation to use our freedom to our own best ends. Our laws act as shields and sources of protection, not sources of wielding power or imposing wills. We have an obligation to uphold the freedom of religion, the source of our values and the means by which we know of our roots and reasons for being here. There shall be a separation of Church and state, but each has its place in our society and each should jointly contribute to the well-being of the citizens of the earthly realm and the heavenly one. We have come to the time when we celebrate our national origins once more: the Fourth of July, or Independence Day. As I re ected, I thought about what we were struggling to achieve independence from: oppression of our freedoms and our God-given rights. The rst Independence Day celebrated a foundation of a people who could claim, “Now we’re on our own,” and could use their newfound freedoms to provide a pinnacle of government, with people clamoring to get in and be part of it ever since. Peter’s admonition still is with us, that we may live as free men, make the best God-given uses of that freedom, serving God by keeping those values that are synonymous with His values, honoring one another and loving our corporate national brotherhood as a means for collectively providing for our ful llment. This is a holiday when we can re ect on what God has given us and be truly thankful. We can show our thanks by working to make the best of all of the opportunities and freedoms we have, rendering to our corporate national family on earth and seeing that we use all of our resources to be a part of the heavenly one that is to come. May this be a blessed holiday for us all; may we use the time to re ect, give thanks to God for what we have and work to further His kingdoms. If you would like to contact Rev. Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee July 3, 2014 16 By Anne CoffeyIf you could eavesdrop on casual conversations here in Glades County or Hendry County, you would note that the main topic usually turns to the lack of job opportunities. If you attended a community luncheon at the Moore Haven Correctional Facility a few days ago you would have heard one of the guests say that there is an entire group of enthusiastic, hard-working people just waiting to help you. Yes, thanks to the Southwest Florida Workforce Development program, also known as Career Source, training, counseling, and resources are available right down the road in Clewiston. These services, available in ve Southwest Florida counties, are open to individuals and businesses. In fact, Career Source is number one in the state for job placements. The leader of this determined group of trainers is Joe Paterno, executive director, who has spent over 38 years in the eld of providing jobs and lifetime careers for all sorts of individuals. He has been the perfect person for this more-than-challenging job, since he is an eternal optimist and always smiling, and has withstood the nancial ups and downs of this unusual state, where tourism is revered above all, and sugarcane, cattle and citrus are second in the money game. He has dealt with every type of person you can imagine that has gravitated to this land of sunlight, beaches and unlimited employment they hope. Now, there is a small catch to the availability of these opportunities. You must want to work, you must follow advice, directions and have a lot of determination. Mr. Paterno has proven that the above criteria can and will create excellent workers. Many of his staff have been in these of ces nearly as long as Mr. Paterno. One successful story is that of Becky Meeler, a career development counselor who has been with the group for over 30 years. Fellow workers said she is as kind and as open-minded today as she was back then as a student. Suset Cunningham, interim supervisor for Immokalee, LaBelle and Clewiston, says her reward for doing the job she loves is helping those in need. "We want to help companies and we work hard to shorten the time between training applicants for them and putting them on the job. Many are migrants and when they come in they are very needy," she said. "It is not discouraging. We want to help and we do. The unemployment numbers are lessening." Ms. Cunningham said that the newest training involves science technology and math programs. Much of this can be had at the Immokalee Technology Center. An extended list of technology training is available throughout the ve counties. Computer skills can also be learned and are helpful for those who never used computers in school. Your rst action as a person needing a job in this area, or an existing or new company needing special training for employees, would be to contact the Career Source Center located in Clewiston. You do not, however, need an appointment and they have more than adequate staff to help you. One person receives the same training and help as an existing or new business. The applicants do not need to limit themselves to past jobs. They will help you update your resume, learn about new job training skills, tell you how to utilize your current or past job skills, and in some cases provide transportation. The slowest time for the of ces is summer, so this may be the most opportune time to apply. Another vital suggestion Dress neatly, wear clean clothes, wear a tidy hairstyle, and wear a big, beautiful smile. Think carefully before you answer questions. Don't reek of cigarette smoke. Yes, you are probably worried beyond description if you are an unemployed parent or caretaker. But remember, these folks are there to help you. They want to help you. They will follow through if you do the same. Five counties are pro ting from these convenient and necessary services: Glades, Hendry, Lee, Charlotte and Collier, with of ces in Clewiston, Fort Myers, Immokalee, LaBelle and Naples. Nearby Highlands County is served by Heartland Services. Southwest Florida Workforce Development Career Source One Stop Center: 215 South Francisco Street, Clewiston, FL, 33440; 863-983-6138. Jobs are Available in Glades and Hendry Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart recognized, on June 26, school districts in Southwest Florida for improved student performance on state assessments in reading, mathematics and science. "I applaud teachers and school leaders for their focus on increasing student academic performance," said Commissioner Stewart. "As we transition to new standards and assessments next year, I am con dent students will continue to succeed." Collier County improved from 2013 in four of the seven assessment areas. Students in eighth grade went up by four percentage points in science while sixth through eighth grade students improved two percentage points in reading. Glades County students increased in four of the seven assessment areas from 2013.
