Thirty-seven seniors were awarded organization, memorial, and honorarium scholarships totaling over $89,000. The MHHS Scholarship Organization began in 2000 when the valedictorian scholarship was vacated due to economic concerns. To ll the gap, a cohort of educators, community leaders, and business alliances worked to secure funds to offset the gap of the unfunded scholarship and support the accomplishments of the Class of 2000 Valedictorian. In 2009 the organization was granted 501(c) 3 status ensuring that all contributions are tax deductible. That initial award in 2000 was $1,000. MurphySpecial to the Glades County Democrat Over $100,000 in property damage was reported after a structure re at 1421 W. Lake Drive in Buckhead Ridge on Monday that kept four re departments busy for several hours. Okeechobee Fire Rescue Lt. Zack Smith reported that about $20,000 in personal property also burned in the re, rst reported just after 9 am. Six units and 15 remen from Okeechobee, the Seminole Tribe, Glades County and Buckhead Ridge Volunteers were dispatched to the scene. Lt. Smith's report stated light smoke showed from all of the eaves and out the garage door as remen arrived. The remen were told the home was vacant and they found a rear door unlocked and quickly gained entry. "We found an active re in the rear living room and later found heavy heat and smoke from two side bedrooms," the report said. Firemen also located a re in a small workshop in the garage. Glades County Firemen provided a tanker and a nearby canal was used as a water source during the battle. Firemen then used large fans to ventilate the property. There were no injuries reported. The State Fire Marshall will determine the cause of the blaze. Blaze consumes vacant home in Buckhead Ridge

The Blessings of Love BugsBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchLove bug blessings. That’s an oxymoron if I ever heard one. Like jumbo shrimp or good grief, the words seem contradictory to each other. Some blessings are easy to acknowledge. For instance, I feel blessed with the sacri ces and freedoms we have received from those who have served or are serving in the armed forces. That makes sense. It’s right and proper. I celebrate that we are honoring them this weekend. But I have trouble celebrating and nding blessings in the love bug explosion that invaded us these last couple of weeks. Love bugs are not what comes to mind when I count my many blessings and name them one by one. But we are told in the Scriptures to give God thanks for everything, so I began wracking my brain for love bug blessings. I found that there are some blessings if you look hard enough. First, love bugs don’t bite. Praise God for that! Other blessings: Love bugs encourage me to wash my truck more often. Love bugs bring all of us together with a common nemesis. Love bugs increase on-the-road comradeship: “If I convoy behind that truck, it will take out most of the love bugs.” Love bugs increase my prayer life (Good Lord, where did all these love bugs come from?) Love bugs help me deal with statistics (with all of these hundreds of thousands of love bugs being smashed, surely there will be less in the future!) Love bugs only live three to four days, less if they y near a road. Love bug season helps us appreciate even more the 10-plus months when we don’t have to deal with them. In my search for love bug blessings, I was reminded of the story of Granny G, who never said anything bad about anyone or anything. Several guys decided to tease her and challenged, “Granny, what do you have to say about the devil?” Granny answered, “That rascal certainly gets around!” Attitude can make a world of difference in how we respond to the daily challenges we encounter, and we can always nd some positive sin the negatives we come across – even love bugs! That’s a life lesson worth embracing. Having said all this, there is still a part of me that wants to ask, “Noah, why couldn’t you have swatted those mosquitoes and squashed those love bugs?”First Methodist Time ChangeCLEWISTON — First United Methodist Church has changed their Sunday worship to one combined worship service at 10 a.m. each Sunday. After the opening praise, children through the fourth grade are invited to leave for a special Children’s Church Program. The nursery is also available for very young children. Children’s Sunday School, along with youth and adult bible study fellowships, follow the service, starting at 11:15 a.m. For more information, please call 863-9835269. More information is also available at the following website: www.FUMCClewiston.org.Community Christian EventsCLEWISTON — The Red Barn Gospel Sing will be held at the Community Christian Church during the summer months. Community Christian Church is located at 201 N. Fransisco Street in Clewiston. The Gulf State Quartet will be performing on June 6 at 7 p.m. For more information, please call Rosalind Osborne at 863-254-5184. Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 22, 2014 4 RELIGION NEWS AND INFORMATIONATTITUDE CAN MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE IN HOW WE RESPOND TO THE DAILY CHALLENGES WE ENCOUNTER...JOHN HICKS Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have fallen 2.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.62/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 8,237 gas outlets in Florida. This compares with the national average that has not moved in the last week to $3.62/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 16.9 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 12.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has not moved during the last month and stands 5.0 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. “The drop that we had observed in the national average weeks ago took a pause over the last week,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “Oil prices have perked back up, and some supply tightness across areas of the country helped propel wholesale gasoline prices higher last week, leading retail prices to hold steady instead of continuing to decline. The temporary stability in the national average will ebb over the next week or two, and gas prices will head down again as we approach Memorial Day,” DeHaan said. The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board is recognizing May 18–24, 2014, as Water Reuse Week to promote the bene ts of using reclaimed water as part of a continuing effort to protect regional water supplies. “Reusing water is essential throughout the state in protecting Florida’s water resources,” said SFWMD Executive Director Blake Guillory, P.E., who also is on the board of directors for the national Water Reuse Association. “Reuse technologies are continually improving, and as a result, we’re seeing an increase in customized industrial applications—especially as Florida’s economy also continues to improve.” Reclaimed water projects ease demand on traditional sources of water and reduce discharges into the ocean. Florida leads the nation in water reuse. Within the District’s 16-county region, more than 100 reuse systems produce and reuse 266 million gallons of reclaimed water per day. Water reuse involves treating domestic wastewater and using the resulting high-quality reclaimed water for a bene cial purpose. Extensive treatment and disinfection ensure that public health and environmental quality are protected. Reclaimed water can be used for many purposes, including: Irrigation of golf courses, parks, residential properties, highway medians and other green space Aesthetic landscape features, such as decorative lakes, ponds and fountains Agricultural irrigation Environmental restoration and wetland creation Groundwater recharge Industrial uses, including equipment wash down, processing water and cooling water Communities that reuse water are able to grow in size while minimizing or even reducing their impact on the water resources they depend on. In addition, use of reclaimed water allows communities to postpone or minimize their capital investments in developing new, more costly water sources and supplies. Further, reclaimed water is exempt from SFWMD landscape irrigation restrictions. The SFWMD, along with local governments and organizations throughout the state, recognizes Water Reuse Week each year during the third full week of May, just as the dry season comes to an end. By Katrina ElskenSpecial to the Glades County Democrat Comedian and actor Bill Engvall is looking forward to performing May 23 at the Seminole Brighton Casino in Glades County. “I like Florida a lot,” Mr. Engvall, 56, said in a telephone interview May 16, “I’m looking forward to getting there and doing the show.” He said his stand-up routine includes new material about his performances on “Dancing with the Stars,” and thoughts on getting older. Fans of his television shows and specials should be comfortable with his familyfriendly material. “What you saw on the Blue Collar Comedy Tour is what you will see in my act. It’s a clean show,” he said, adding that the audience will not hear anything at his show that they wouldn’t if “you go to your kids’ playground and wait for an hour.” Mr. Engvall does not travel as much as he did in his earlier career. He is on the road about 60-80 days a year. “There was a time I spent eight months of the year on the road,” he said. He said the strangest place he ever performed was a show in New York. “A religious cult wanted me to do 10 minutes,” he said. “It was weird. I didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “But it turned out to be cool.” All they wanted to hear was his famous “Here’s Your Sign” routine. He got off the plane and did 10 minutes of “Here’s Your Sign.” “They gave me my check and put me back on the plane,” he remembered. His advice to young people who want to be stand up comedians? “Don’t!” he joked. “Seriously, do as much stage time as you can,” Mr. Engvall advised, “and keep your material relatable to your audience.” A native of Galveston, Texas, Mr. Engvall moved to Dallas and was working as a disc jockey, with plans of becoming a teacher. While in a nightclub, he decided to try his hand at stand-up comedy and found that making people laugh was his calling. Among his many achievements, Engvall’s debut comedy album “Here’s Your Sign,” released in 1996, is certi ed platinum and held the No. 1 position on the Billboard Comedy Chart for 15 weeks. It then reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Current Country Album Chart and reached the Top 50 on Billboard’s Top 200 Album Chart. The single of the same name was ranked No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Singles Sales Chart for 10 weeks, reached the Top 30 on Billboard’s Singles Sales Chart and even achieved gold status. In 1997, Engvall won the “Best Selling Comedy Album” award at the annual NARM convention. His second album, “Dork sh,” released in 1998, is certi ed gold and ranked No. 1 on Billboard’s Comedy Chart. Mr. Engvall starred in and executive produced his own self-titled sitcom for TBS, which ran for three seasons. He was also one of the stars of the hit sketch comedy show “Blue Collar TV” on the WB. In 2008, he starred in “Bait Shop” with Billy Ray Cyrus on USA Network. Mr. Engvall has also appeared in several lms, including “Delta Farce” in 2007, “Strawberry Wine” in 2008 and “Bed & Breakfast: Love is a Happy Accident” in 2010. He was part of the hugely successful “Blue Collar Comedy” concert lms, which have sold more than nine million copies. The album for “Blue Collar Comedy Tour: One for the Road” was nominated for a Gramm y Award in 2006. Mr. Engvall also has several solo specials, including his certi ed multi-platinum “Live” in 2004, “15 Off Cool” in 2007 and “Aged and Confused” in 2009. In 2012, he reunited with Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Gu y for the “Them Idiots Whirled Tour,” which was lmed as a special for CMT. Special to the Glades County Democrat If you are among the 750,000-plus Florida bass anglers, now is the time to provide your opinion about Florida’s proposed change to largemouth bass conservation by lling out a new online survey. The change being considered is a vebass daily bag limit, only one of which may be 16 inches in total length or longer. This means that each person would be allowed to keep up to ve largemouth bass less than 16 inches, or four largemouth bass less than 16 inches and one largemouth bass 16 inches or longer each day. This change would replace current length limits, but would not alter the current statew ide bag limit of ve bass. To take the survey and to learn more about largemouth bass, and current and possible future management changes, go to MyFWC.com/Fishing and select the “Speak out on bass rules!” link under the bass image near the middle of the page. Based on public input and future edits to the proposal, the earliest this rule change is expected to be implemented is July 2016. “The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) takes public opinions very seriously,” said Tom Champeau, director of the Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management. “Combined with the best science and case studies that we have to go on, public input helps us strive for optimal sustained use of these popular and valuable sh.” In 2011 the Black Bass Management Plan w as approved, based on comments from more than 7,500 anglers and a series of Technical Advisory Group meetings involving Florida guides, tournament anglers, marina owners, trophy bass shermen, outdoor w riters and tourism representatives. The plan encouraged FWC biologists to develop the least restrictive regulations feasible to enhance trophy bass sheries, maintain healthy bass populations statewide, and provide diverse angling opportunities. Public input encouraged controlling the number of big bass taken from the wild and enhancing angler satisfaction. Based on a review of biological and sociological data that included almost 6,000 public responses to a preliminary survey and open-house events around the state, the FWC is seeking additional feedback on the proposed change to create a basic statewide regulation for largemouth bass. Currently, south and east of the Suwannee River there is a 14-inch minimum, and in the Suwannee River and north and west there is a 12-inch minimum size limit for bass. Data show that protecting these smaller sh is not necessary, biologically and that the size limit complicates regulations. What is advantageous is protecting bigger sh, which are rarer and take longer to produce — hence the proposed catch limit of only one bass that is 16 inches or longer. This regulation would also be more lenient in the shing zone in the south (east of Highway 441 and south of State Road 80), which currently allows only one bass over 14 inches. Limited exceptions for speci c sheries that have special needs or opportunities would still be possible, such as high-pro le, catch-and-release sheries that need such a management approach, or even a few more liberal regulations where bass may be overabundant. Those would be limited exceptions and generally associated with sh management areas. In addition, it is important to note that there is no intent to alter the simple Bass Tournament Exemption Permit process (see MyFWC.com/Permits then click on “Freshwater” and “Black Bass Tournament”). Currently, bass organizations holding tournaments may apply online for a temporary exemption to bass size limits. This is done to ensure the health of Florida freshwater resources while encouraging shing participation from small clubs to major tournaments. Tournament organizers and sponsors must emphasize proper handling and care of bass to their participants and adhere to live-release guidelines stipulated in the permit. Moreover, in return for the temporary exemption to allow weigh-in prior to live-release of the bass, all tournament participants must forego any harvest. Hence, they are not allowed to keep what would otherwise be their vesh bag limit. Any sh that accidentally die in a permitted tournament must be donated to charity or for research. Tournaments are not required to have a permit if they choose to abide by existing regulations (e.g., currently one bass longer than 22 inches or the proposed one bass over 16 inches). Besides lling out the survey, those interested in ensuring quality bass shing can do two other things: Sign up for our TrophyCatch citizen-science program that rewards anglers for catching, documenting and releasing bass heavier than 8 pounds (see TrophyCatchFlorida.com ), and purchase a “Go Fishing” largemouth bass tag for your vehicle or trailer (see http://bit.ly/FLbass-tag). 15 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 22, 2014 BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe American Flamingo is mostly found in the West Indies, with some showing up in South Florida, Texas, South America, the Yucatan Peninsula and the Galapagos Islands. These birds, who were formally known as Greater Flamingos, are seen almost annually in the Everglades. Recently, a record-breaking 147 Flamingos were con rmed in a group at an undisclosed location in Palm Beach County, however, only two birds were observed last week at the same location. In order to protect themselves from predators, these birds usually live and feed in group, which are called a "colony," " amboyance," " urry," "regiment" or "strand" of amingos. Adult birds are tall and pink, with a long, lean, curved neck and a black-tipped bill with a downward bend. Young Flamingos are born gray and white, but turn pink when they are about two years old. The American Flamingo's voice is a honking goose-like, "huh-huh-huh." Their bent bills allow them to feed on plankton, tiny sh, y larvae and other organisms found in muddy ats or shallow water. They use their long legs and webbed feet to stir up the water bottom and then bury their bills or entire head to suck up mud and water. Morsels of food are then ltered from the mud with their beak and excess liquid is expelled. American Flamingos are known to reproduce in the Bahamas, Cuba, Mexico and Ecuador. At the beginning of nesting season they perform courtship displays with hundreds moving together in a coordinated walk. Once mating is complete, a pair takes turns incubating their single egg.InformationIf you would like to join Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers on June 12 or 14, email to Margaret England at sta5birding@embarqmail. com with your name and contact information, including an emergency cell number, the date you would like to participate, and the number of people in your party.
