Page 12 Pedro Navarro named Coach of the YearBy Tracy RoundsSpecial to the Glades County Democrat The Moore Haven Lady Terriers softball team clinched the district championship for the third straight year, in a game against the St. John Neumann Lady Celtics on Monday night. The Terriers got off to a great start in the rst inning, scoring four runs. Olivia Everett and Lexi Story both wowed the crowd by hitting triples, with Olivia getting an RBI. Jessi Osceola and Savannah Devine both hit doubles, while Jacqueline Phares and Darla Cypress both helped the team score runs by getting RBI's. Alaina Lee, Olivia Everett, Sydnee Cypress (running for Alexis Story) and Jacqueline Phares all scored in the rst inning. Michelle Peterson came in as pitcher for the Lady Celtics in the second inning and gave the Terriers a run for their money. The Terriers had a bit of a rough third inning with some errors allowing the Lady Celtics to rally and score three runs. The crowd was biting their nails wondering if the Terriers were going to pull out of the small slump they had found themselves in. The game turned around and the ladies showed their drive to succeed when rst baseman Jacqueline Phares made an amazing catch of a dif cult foul ball in the fth inning. The game continued at 4-3 until the sixth inning when Savannah Devine and Darla Cypress both scored on a passed ball, bringing the score to 6-3. Head Coach Pedro Navarro said the girls didn't have as many hits as he would have liked, but in the end they came through with the win like he knew they would. He said he never doubted for a minute that the Lady Terriers wouldn't bring home the district championship this year. "I have all the con dence in the world in these girls," he said. "They have worked ver y hard, and it shows on the eld." Center elder Alaina Lee said, "It feels really good to win the district championship for the third year in a row. Thoughts from an Empty TombBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchEaster day is over, but Easter life continues; as should Easter memories. It’s been almost thirty years, but I still remember experiencing Jerusalem for the rst time and traveling along the Via Dolorosa – the “Path of Sorrow.” The road to Calvary was not what I’d envisioned. It wasn’t what I thought it would be. I had imagined a spiritual stroll along the path that Jesus went. Instead I found myself in an upstream struggle against a multitude of shoppers, street vendors, soldiers, and tourists. Every few steps, some vender or shopkeeper would step in front of one of our group and dangle camels, scarves, and various souvenirs. Not only was there no time for re ection, we had to struggle to stay together. Finally we turned the corner and headed for the church of the Holy Sepulcher. I thought it would be better. I was wrong. I expected something simple. I found something ornate. At the time of Jesus, this was a cemetery. Now it’s a cathedral covered with marble and gold and intricate paintings. Forty-three lamps hang above the traditional spot of Jesus’ tomb. I tried to picture it as it originally was, but couldn’t. People were lined up to go in. Lots of people. I hate waiting in line, so you could probably guess my mindset. Blocking the way in was a blackrobed, black bearded, black hatted priest who kept on saying, “Twenty minutes, twenty minutes.” Those might have been the only words of English he spoke, because the guys in front kept responding, “But that’s what you told us fteen minutes ago.” The crowd mumbled. I mumbled. Someone muttered about the temple needing another cleansing. Then came the words, “Come this way.” It was James Flemming, our guide. Jim took us behind the crowd and into the back area of the church to a place that didn’t look like it was used too often. It was dark. It was musty. It was cold. As my eyes adjusted, I saw a small opening. It was a rock-hewn tomb. I walked over to the opening, and just like the apostle John, I looked in. I was amazed. It was not a large room like I’d imagined, but a small room barely lit with a small oil lamp. “Go on in”, Jim said. I didn’t have to be told twice. Another guy about my size and I squeezed in and sat on the cold oor. Suddenly, the lights went out and a door outside slammed shut. I felt myself in a dark, tight, claustrophobic room that seemed to be sealed shut and closing in on me. Sharing the experience, my friend whispered, “God put himself in a place like this.” After a few long minutes in the dark tomb, a light came on. With the light came realization. The Easter story is not just a Sunday School story. The life of Jesus was not just a romantic fable. The Christian experience is not just a somewhere-over-the-rainbow illusion. It’s real, and what was true then is true now. I was in a cold tomb, but besides my friend and myself, it was empty. It had been empty for over 2000 years. It is still empty. The God who rolled the stone away then still moves stones for us today. The message of the empty tomb declares that no power on earth could keep Christ down then, and that no power on earth can keep us down now when we are in Christ Jesus. Christ is risen. Our response, not just on Easter Sunday, but every day is, “he is risen indeed!”Women’s Day 2014BELLE GLADE — The Women of St. John First Missionary Baptist Church invites you to fellowship with us as we “Trust GOD to direct our paths” during the 2014 Women’s Day celebration on Sunday, April 27, at 11:00 a.m. The speaker will be Sis. A lmost daily now on television we see and hear about a ood, a tornado, a tsunami, or an earthquake, a mudslide or a typhoon in the Paci c. Almost always there were large numbers of people who were not at all prepared. Lives were lost or ruined by the loss of friends or loved ones. It has happened right here in the Moore Haven/Lakeport area in the past and it could happen again. In this area there's the possibility of hurricane w hich might spawn tornadoes and even ooding from Lake Okeechobee. There is also the possibility of a tornado even when there is no hurricane. Are you snowbirds staying in this area during the hurricane season? Do you know where the shelters are in Glades County? Have you thought about an evacuation route? Will you want to nd a "special needs" shelter for those who are handicapped or have special needs? Yes, I know. There is plenty of warning ahead of time for hurricanes. But that does not help during the height of the storm when there are no emergency services immediately available until after the storm abates. Come and join the Friends of the Library on Monday, May 19, for the "Hurricane Preparedness" presentation by LaTosha Reiss of the Glades County Emergency Management Center and ask all of the questions you may have about civil disasters. The re was reported just after noon. The west side of the Lake Okeechobee has exposed grass that dries out quickly with the hot, humid Florida climate. Access to the re was an issue for the re ghters, but due to a favorable westerl y breeze, the re ghters were able to use a re ghting tactic to ght re with re. The re was contained at 2:32 p.m. according to the Florida Forest Service report. Approximately 4,000 acres burned. The wild re was apparently caused by agricultural equipment in contact with the dry grass, according to the report. No structures or people were threatened by the blaze. Wild re burns 4,000 acres

Apparently there is an annual Easter event held in the neighborhood known locally as Hushmouth Flawda. It’s not clear if that was the event being referred to by Mrs. Hays. Mrs. Hays declined to comment on how many times Mr. Thomas was shot, or where his wounds were located. She also did not know what type of gun was used. A published report in the Highlands Today newspaper stated Mr. Thomas was shot near Highway Park Liquors on Vision Street. The article quoted a source who said people apparently were there to attend the Hushmouth Flawda event, as they’ve done in years past. However, for whatever reason the event was not held this year and people apparently congregated at Highway Park Liquors. If you have any information on this case you are asked to contact Detective Roger St. Laurent at the Highlands County Sheriff’s Of ce. He can be reached at 863-402-7447 or 863-402-7250. DEATHContinued From Page 1 of the school!” Shortstop Skyler Burke mirrored Alaina’s feelings by saying, “It feels good because it has never been done before and this is giving everyone something to remember us by.” The Lady Terriers will play their rst regional game on Thursday, April 24th against Bradenton Christian in Moore Haven at 7 p.m. Good luck, Terriers! The stats from the game are as follows: A laina Lee (#00), center elder for the Terriers, went one for four with a single, scoring one run for the Terriers. Olivia Everett (#1) pitched all seven innings for the Terriers. She had two strikeouts, ve walks, and allowed three runs on four hits. Olivia went two for three at the bat with a single, a triple and an RBI. She also scored one run. Alexis Story (#27), catcher for the Terriers, went one for three hitting a triple and getting an RBI. Sydnee Cypress ran for Lexi and scored one run. Jacqueline Phares (#13), rst baseman, went two for three at the bat with an RBI, and scored a run. Darla Cypress (#11), third baseman for the Terriers, went one for three scoring one run and getting an RBI. Savannah Devine (#3), right elder for the Terriers, went two for three with a single, a double and a sacri ce bunt. Savannah also scored one run. Coach of the YearCoach Navarro has been with the Lady Terriers since 2006, and has been the head coach since 2007. Before joining the Lady Terriers, Coach Navarro helped out with baseball for 10 years. He then moved on to help the Lady Terriers to spend more time w ith his daughter Emily who graduated in 2012. He has led his teams to four district championships and one state appearance during his time as head coach. Coach Navarro has been named the “Coach of the Year” for Class 3A District 12, by the state of Florida. When asked how it feels to win this award, he replied, “It is an honor. I couldn’t have done it without my dedicated coaching staff, Assistant Coach J ames Story and volunteer coach Brad Phares and the Lady Terriers. At the beginning of every season, we set out individual and team goals. So far this year, we have achieved 95 percent of the team and individual goals that we set forth.” Coach James Story said he is very happy that Coach Navarro won the “Coach of the Year” award. “I think it is awesome and he deserves it!” said Coach Story. Senior Skyler Burke said, “It is really good that Coach won this award. He has been underappreciated, and I am glad that he is nally getting the recognition that he deserves. He gives so much to our program, and has made us the team that we are. We wouldn’t be the players that we are today if it wasn’t for Coach Pedro.” When asked what in uence Coach Navarro has had on her, Skyler replied, “He has made me a better player by pushing me harder than anyone else. Coach has always challenged me and this has made me less sensitive and made me want to be better player.” Assistant Coach James Story has been with the Lady Terriers for three years, this being his rst year as assistant. When asked how he feels about winning the district championship this year, Coach Story said, “I have had the greatest con dence in this group of girls since the beginning of the season, and we are not stopping with just the district championship!” Sadly, this will be Coach Navarro’s last year coaching softball. He said that his future plans include helping his son Evan with baseball. Coach Navarro said he is going to miss the heart and ght of the softball girls the most. He said his most memorable moment during his time as coach was when the Lady Terriers took him to state in 2009. Volunteer Coach Brad Phares joined the Lady Terriers coaching staff this year. When asked about his coaching experience with the Lady Terriers, he said, “I’ve enjoyed it. I have always watched the game from outside of the fence. It’s been nice to be a volunteer coach and be a part of this team and coaching staff. I have really enjoyed being able to help focus on the mental aspects of the game and helping with the pitching game.” SOFTBALLContinued From Page 1
