This year will go down as another success for all the exhibitors involved. Our announcer for the week was Tommy Hare. Tommy de nitely made it fun (and sometimes scary) for the exhibitors because he has taught most of them and they never knew what interesting detail he might tell the audience about them! We opened up our shows each night proudly with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Monday night, Feb. 25, one of our Dairy Exhibitors, Destiny Everett opened in prayer and was helped by some of our Pee Wee Exhibitors, Harley Pryor and Hayden Davis in leading the Pledge of Allegiance. One of the crowd's favorite events of the week is always the Pee Wee Show, which started our Exhibitors shine at youth livestock show Special to the Glades County DemocratEllie Goodwin (left) had Grand Champion and Lacy Green had the Reserve Grand Champion at the Glades Youth Livestock show on Feb. 26. The runners will run south bound on U.S. 27 until they reach Third Street Avenue J where they will meet up with other participants. Once all participants are gathered at 3rd street they will all walk as a group and end the run at the Moore Haven City Park located on Avenue J and First Street. For approximately 30 years, the Special Olympics "Flame of Hope" has traversed Florida in an intrastate relay of simultaneous routes throughout the state, covering countless thousands of miles. The torch is carried by local and state law enforcement of cers all the way to the Opening Ceremony of Florida's annual State Summer Games, which will be held at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex on Friday, May 16. BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonKilldeer breed from Newfoundland, the south rim of the Hudson Bay, as well as southern Yukon and Northwest Territories south to central Mexico and the Gulf Coast states. Most breeding in Florida occurs from March through July. The fall migration of Killdeer in Florida is normally July through November, and spring migration occurs mainly in March and April. Killdeer are a medium-sized slender and lanky plover with a long, pointed tail and long wings. Adults have a brown back and wings, a white belly and a white breast with two black bands. Their rump is an orange-buff. The face and cap are brown with a white forehead and they have an orange-red eye ring. They have many calls which range from sharp “dee” to a nervous, babbling thrill. They frequently use a “broken wing act” to distract predators from their nest, which is a shallow scrape, usually in bare sand or gravel, camou aged with stones and blades of grass. When the predator is far from the precious nest, the killdeer suddenly “heals” and ies away. Both parents share responsibility for the eggs, which usually hatch at 24 to 28 days. The chicks, which have almost the identical markings as the adults, are able to see and forage soon after hatching. They usually edge at 25 days old. Although Killdeer are considered shorebirds, they often live far from water and can be seen and heard in elds. Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers will host a birding trip on Saturday, March 22 at STA5 (Stormwater Treatment Area 5). Birders and/ or photographers will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the STA5 Deer Fence Canal Trailhead for the driving trip around the levees. To make a reservation, please email Margaret England at sta5birding@ embarqmail.com or call 863-674-0695. Everyone is invited to share their birdwatching experiences and post suggestions for featured birdwatching sites on the Hendry-Glades Audubon or The Clewiston News Facebook pages. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 HENDRY COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS NOTICE OF CHANGES TO LAND DEVELOPMENT CODE TO PROTECT USE OF COUNTY AIRPORTS e Board of County Commissioners of Hendry County, Florida proposes to adopt the following by ordinance: AN ORDINANCE OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF HENDRY COUNTY, FLORIDA, AMENDING THE HENDRY COUNTY CODE OF ORDINANCES, CHAPTER 1-53, ZONING, SPECIFICALLY SECTION 1-53-6.13 AIRPORTS, SECTION 1-53-3 ZONING DISTRICTS, TABLE 53-1, AND SECTION 1-53-4 DIMENSIONAL AND DENSITY REGULATIONS, TABLE 53-2; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS OF LAW; PROVIDING FOR CODIFICATION, INCLUSION IN CODE, AND SCRIVENERS ERRORS; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. David and Goliath: Then and NowBY REV. SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchThe well-known story about the battle between David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17) brought a commentary from one source that caught my attention. He proffered that “the smart money would have been on David” among the crowds that were standing around to witness the ght between the seasoned and giant warrior and the small Israeli boy with no armor. His comment piqued my curiosity and I read further; he made a good point. David did not let Goliath de ne the ght that was to be. David instead chose his own way of ghting against the seasoned warrior. His gift of a tunic and sword from Saul was rejected (1 Samuel 17:39); that was how the Philistine was going to ght, but he would not be the one to choose the weapons. Instead, ve stones and a sling would bring Goliath down. David knew his weapons and how best to use them -that makes all the difference. The motivations of the two also cannot be ignored. For Goliath, it was “simply another day at the of ce” (or battle eld in this case), and he would have fought the ght and then moved on to the next one (1 Samuel 17:33). For David, it was a matter of country, his people and his God that was at stake. “It’s not the size of the dog in the ght, but the size of the ght in the dog,” according to one aphorism; and that was the case here to change the odds. One physician pointed out that giant-sized persons tend to be clumsy, slow in motion (1 Samuel 17:4), and Samson was weighed down by armor, estimated to be about 125 pounds (ibid, v7) so that he needed a shield-bearer to go ahead of him. This will be a contest between a rapid, mobile, speedy contestant who can hit and run and then hit again, versus the lumbering giant who is slow, sluggish, hardly mobile – the lumbering tank against the well-placed RPG. In the downfall of Eve (Genesis 3), Satan causes Eve not to believe in herself, about what God has really said to her. He contradicts Eve and appeals to her senses (i.e. feelings) rather than her knowledge of God. David succumbs to none of these things. He knows his weapons; he accurately gauges his enemy, correctly assesses his strengths and weaknesses, he is committed to what he is doing at a very signi cant and profound level and he determines how the contest will take place. In our spiritual (and sometimes worldly) warfare, it is important to know our weapons and not let those who would defeat us determine how the battles will take place. I may not buy into your point of view, your way of looking at things, but my way may be no less valid than yours. I may listen to your persuasive arguments but that doesn’t mean I have no viewpoint of my own. If I believe in what I am doing or saying, I will stand my ground. I will not be sent away in defeat with self-doubts or succumb to doing things that I think are wrong. I will make the best use of the resources at my command -scriptures, reason, tradition, faith that has stood the test of time -and in secular matters, likewise, the best resources I can gather. If I feel like the underdog, it will not matter, I will do my best and lay it on the line. The Biblical accounts of what took place in times gone by are not merely, in my opinion, historical records, they have much to teach us. They were about real life then, they are about real life now. They are also a source of encouragement when we feel overwhelmed and want to give up. Sometimes it takes more than a cursory reading, but searching for what God may be saying is well worth it all. If you’re doing God’s work, if you’re right, if you’re not afraid: don’t give up. God will sustain and victory will come. If you would like to contact Rev. A s we age, we misplace car keys, or can’t remember a name we just learned or a meal w e just ordered. But University of Florida researchers say memory trouble doesn’t have to be inevitable, and they’ve found a drug therapy that could potentially reverse this type of memory decline. The drug can’t yet be used in humans, but the researchers are pursuing compounds that could someday help the population of aging adults who don’t have Alzheimer’s or other dementias but still have trouble remembering day-to-day items. Their ndings w ill be published in today’s (March 5) issue of the Journal of Neuroscience. The kind of memory responsible for holding information in the mind for short periods of time is called “working memory.” Working memory relies on a balance of chemicals in the brain. The UF study shows this chemical balance tips in older adults, and w orking memory declines. The reason? It could be because their brains are producing too much of a chemical that slows neural activity. “Graduate student Cristina Banuelos’ w ork suggests that cells that normally prov ide the brake on neural activity are in overdrive in the aged prefrontal cortex,” said researcher Jennifer Bizon, an associate professor in the department of neuroscience and a member of UF’s Evelyn F. & William L. McKnight Brain Institute. This chemical, an inhibitory brain neurotransmitter called GABA, is essential. Without it, brain cells can become too active, similar to what happens in the brains of people with schizophrenia and epilepsy. A normal level of GABA helps maintain the optimal levels of cell activation, said collaborator Barry Setlow, an associate professor in UF’s departments of psychiatry and neuroscience. Working memory underlies many mental abilities and is sometimes referred to as the brain’s mental sketchpad, Bizon said. For example, Bizon said, you use your working memory in many everyday activities such as calculating your nal bill at the end of dining at a restaurant. Most people can calculate a 15 percent tip and add it to the cost of their meal without pencil and paper. Central to this process is the ability to keep multiple pieces of information in mind for a short duration — such as remembering the cost of your dinner while calculating the amount needed for the tip. “Almost all higher cognitive processes depend on this fundamental operation,” Bizon said. To determine the culprit behind working memory decline, the researchers tested the memory of young and aged rats in a “Skinner box.” In the Skinner box, rats had to remember the location of a lever for short periods of up to 30 seconds. The scientists found that while both young and old rats could remember the location of the lever for brief periods of time, as those time periods lengthened, old rats had more dif culty remembering the location of the lever than young rats. But not all older rats did poorly on the memory test, just as not all older adults have memory problems. The study shows the older brains of some people or rats with no memory problems might compensate for the overactive inhibitory system — they are able to produce fewer GABA receptors and therefore bind less of the inhibitory chemical. Older rats with memory problems had more GABA receptors. The drug the researchers tested blocked GABA receptors, mimicking the lower number of those receptors that some older rats had naturall y and restoring working memory in aged rats to the level of younger rats. “Modern medicine has done a terri c job of keeping us alive for longer, and no w we have to keep up and determine how to maximize the quality of life for seniors,” Bizon said. “A key aspect of that is going to be developing strategies and therapies that can maintain and improve cognitive health.” Drug therapy could someday reverse memory loss TALLAHASSEE–On March 18, the Florida Senate passed Senate Bill 224, which aims to prohibit the sale of electronic cigarettes and other alternative tobacco products to minors. The bill is sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Lizbeth Benacquisto (R-Ft. Myers) who released the following statement: “Today the Florida Senate joined together in unanimous support of protecting Florida’s children,” said Leader Benacquisto. “Electronic cigarettes are becoming increasingly popular. However, by putting age restrictions on these harmful nicotine devices we are taking the steps necessary to keep our impressionable children healthy and strong. I appreciate the support of the Senate and look forward to working with the Governor and our partners in the House to ensure this important bill becomes law.” CS/CS/SB 224 seeks to include electronic cigarettes under the current statute that prohibits minors from purchasing cigarettes and other tobacco products across the state. It does not change any other tobacco or nicotine-related statutes. For more information on CS/CS/SB 224, please visit http:// senate.gov/Session / Bill/2014/0224. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 11 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 20, 2014 By Bob WattendorfFWC Virtually all of Florida’s fresh waters are brimming with bream, which include bluegill, redear sun sh, redbreast sun sh and spotted sun sh. These sporty little sh are many a kid’s rst catch, introducing them to a lifetime of shing fun. They provide great opportunities for shoreline shing using simple cane poles or spinning rods. License-free freshwater shing weekends are a great time for adults to introduce kids to shing and see if they and you would like to take up the sport. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) schedules the rst of four license-free recreational freshwater shing days on the rst full weekend in A pril each year (April 5-6 this year), because it is such a productive shing time, and the w eather is usually pleasant. Many of Florida’s recreational sport shes, such as black bass, bluegill and redear sun sh, move into the shallows to spawn during spring, making them more available for anglers to catch. During license-free freshwater shing w eekends (the rst weekend in April and the second weekend in June) no recreational shing license is required; however, all other bag limit, season, gear and size restrictions apply on these dates for recreational shing. The FWC invites you to take this opportunity to take your family, friends and colleagues shing. Children don’t need a shing license until they are 16, but parents may buy them one at any time and they won’t expire until they are 17. This helps the FWC attain additional revenue from the Federal Aid in Sport sh Restoration program to improve their shing and gives the child pride in belonging to the angling community. Fishing is a low-cost, wholesome form of entertainment that often pays for itself with healthy food for the table. An annual license (MyFWC.com/License; 888-347-4356) is only $17.50 for residents. To further encourage recreational shing, the FWC will conduct a special contest during April to collect photos of anglers. All you have to do is post a photo of your family shing in Florida’s fresh waters on Twitter or Instagram with #FWC-FamilyFishing. In return for your efforts, the FWC will enter your name into a drawing for one of six surprise packages, each including a $50 gift card, compliments of Bass Pro Shops and TrophyCatch, and another $50 worth of assorted shing lures, hooks, line and goodies to make your next trip even more productive. Submitted photos must be your own, unedited pictures, and the photo must not include inappropriate content. Photos should be taken during April while freshwater shing in Florida and include multiple anglers enjoying their day together on the water. The FWC may subsequently use the photos for outreach purposes. In addition, freshwater anglers are encouraged to participate in the Big Catch angler-recognition program. All you need to do is catch one of 33 species of freshwater sh that exceed a speci c length or weight, go to BigCatchFlorida.com, ll out some information and post a photo. Besides getting to share the excitement of your catch on the Internet, you’ll receive via email a custom certi cate to print, and a discount for SportsmanOnCanvas.com. Big Catch encourages anglers to try different species and locations, by recognizing different levels of achievement: Master Angler ( ve different qualifying Big Catch species), Elite Angler (10 different qualifying Big Catch species) or Specialist ( ve qualifying sh of the same species). It is fun and challenging for the entire family. Here are some tips to make your bream shing more successful. During spring, sunsh congregate to spawn in water depths from 3 to 10 feet. Bluegill continue to spawn periodically throughout summer. Bluegill opt for slightly shallower areas than redear sun sh, but it’s not unusual to see them use the same bedding areas simultaneously. Crickets, grubs, sand maggots or grass shrimp will all catch bedding bluegill. Use a small hook, #6 or #8, with a split-shot sinker about 6 inches up the line, and concentrate on water less than 6 feet deep. A small oat helps identify strikes. For arti cial baits, a 1/8-ounce “beetle spin” with a white or chartreuse body on ultralight tackle is an excellent choice. Your local bait and tackle shop can quickly help you nd what you need. The redear sun sh, or shellcracker, is another popular pan sh. Although they prefer snails and clams, redear sun sh are caught most often on earthworms around the full moon in March and April, when spawning peaks. Redear prefer hard-bottom habitat and typically begin spawning about one month before bluegill. In south Florida, shellcracker spawn as early as late February and will likely begin bedding in the Panhandle around the end of May, depending on water temperatures. Shellcracker continue spawning into August. Redbreast sun sh, also known as river bream and redbellies, are the owing water cousins of bluegill. Redbellies are more common in rivers than bluegill, and often can be found in backwater areas with less ow. The same baits that work for bluegill will catch redbreast sun sh. The spotted sun sh, or stumpknocker, is an often overlooked stream pan sh. Aptl y named, stumpknockers can be found in the tangle of roots at the water’s edge. Although spotted sun sh rarely exceed 8 inches, these feisty species provide great sport on light tackle. Tiny (1/16-ounce) beetle spins pitched close to shore can be deadly, particularly tipped with freshwater clam meat. With a shing hole within 30-45 minutes of almost everyone in Florida, the hardest part might be picking your destination. Although your neighborhood pond or a local park may be your best bet, FWC biologists created a list of some major public water bodies they think should be great bream sheries this year. For full descriptions of the sites, access to them and speci c shing tips for these locations, see MyFWC.com/Fishing and under “Freshwater Fishing” select “Sites/Forecasts.” Instant licenses are available at MyFWC. com/License or by calling 888-FISH-FLORIDA (347-4356). Report violators by calling 888-404-3922, *FWC or #FWC on your cell phone, or texting to Tip@MyFWC.com. Fishing destinations great for kids in Florida Courtesy photoFishing can be fun for the whole family. Mike Jones caught this bass on Lake Okeechobee. Statewide, the participating chiefs, of cers, sheriff’s, deputies, agents and cadets from virtually every branch of federal, state, county and municipal law enforcement, represent a total of over 300 different agencies that serve as “Guardians of the Flame.” The Torch Run began its existence at the S.O.M.E. (Special Olympics Mileage Event) Run, when a handful of of cers ran the “Flame of Hope” throughout the state in an exhausting, non-stop run. Soon, law enforcement agencies throughout Florida became involved and the S.O.M.E. Run would go on to become the “Florida Law Enforcement Torch Run.” The Glades County Sheriff’s Of ce is proud to be a part of this very special event and hopes to make the run a huge success. TALLAHASSEE– On March 18, the Florida Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 156, Motor Vehicle License Taxes, by Senator Joe Negron (R-Stuart), which will reduce certain annual vehicle registration fees for a total of nearly $400 million in tax relief. “For the second consecutive year, the Senate has overwhelmingly supported Senator Negron’s proposal to roll back vehicle fees and give broad-based tax relief to every Floridian who drives a car or truck,” said Senate President Don Gaetz (R-Niceville). “This bill is the centerpiece of the $500 million ‘It’s Your Money’ tax cut which Governor Scott, Speaker Weatherford and I are committed to passing this year.” “The impact of this meaningful tax relief will be felt by Florida families throughout the state for years to come,” said Senator Negron. “I am grateful to Governor Scott, President Gaetz, Speaker Weatherford and my colleagues in the Senate for their continued leadership as we work to deliver broad-based tax relief to the families and businesses of Florida.” Senate Bill 156 reduces certain annual fees paid to register a motor vehicle to the amount paid prior to 2009. Based on the latest estimates, the bill reduces fees by $395 million. Annual vehicle registration fees were raised during the height of Florida’s economic decline in 2009, a year when state general revenue collections had declined more than 22 percent since their high in 2005-2006.
