Food, water, shelter, habitat and safety are important considerations when attracting wildlife. Excellent resources to learn about “Landscaping for Wildlife” can be found on the University of Florida’s IFAS Living Green website: http:// livinggreen.ifas.u .edu/ or at a local IFAS Extension Of ce. One interesting bird, built for marsh life, is the Tricolored Heron. The Tricolored Heron is fairly common, but with decreasing numbers, they are designated a Species of Special Concern in Florida. This slim, medium-sized heron was formerly known as the Louisiana Heron. Adults have a dark, slate-blue head and upper body with a purplish chest and white belly. During breeding season, the Tricolored Heron sports a short, white head plume, a buffy throat and fore-neck, a blue face and a blue bill tipped with black. Non-breeding adults have a yellow face, bill and legs; the throat and fore-neck are white. On juvenile Tricolored Herons, rusty red adores the head, neck, upper back and front parts of the wing. Long legs enable them to wade and see down through water while using long toes to churn up food and distribute its weight over soft mud. Its foraging behavior is very active and it often runs after sh. A long neck and bill help this elegant bird reach its prey, which consists of sh, crustaceans, reptiles and insects. Its vocalization is a soft nasal moaning or croaking similar to other herons or egrets. Tricolored Herons usually nest in colonies with other heron and ibis species. A clutch may contain three to four blue-green eggs which hatch in about 22 days. Both parents feed the young. The young can swim well for short distances at 14 days of age and normally edge between 16 and 21 days of age. The community is invited to join HendryGlades Audubon volunteers on the March 22 for a birdwatching trip to STA5. Reservations are required. To sign up for the trip, send an email to Margaret England at sta5birding@embarqmail. com with your name and contact information, including an emergency cell number for the trip day, the date you want to go, and the number in your party. Giving UpBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchIn the Christian calendar, we are in the season of Lent, a time of 40 days, not counting Sundays, leading up to Easter. For many, Lent is a season of repentance. It is a time to avoid temptation, just like Christ did for 40 days in the desert. Some traditions encourage people to give up something for Lent. Up is the key word. Lent is a time of re ection on the meaning of our lives in the light of Christ's sacri ce on the cross. He died for us, what have we done for Him? Such re ections encourage us to give up practices that may be a deterrent to being the kind of people God called us to be. On the ip side of that, such re ections are also an encouragement for us to put into practice things which will re ect the love of God we experience as Easter people. Lent is about stretching ourselves, sometimes denying ourselves to make more room for God. It's about giving up ourselves for God. Lent is not the time to go so hard that you die, or make others wish they were dead because you're so cranky. (One friend shared that she gets deadly if she doesn't eat!) Life is short, and we don't have much time to gladden the hearts of those who travel the way with us. So, let us be swift to love, quick to show kindness and steadfast in our connection with the Almighty. That should be our focus in the season of Lent. That should be our focus whether or not our tradition and experience involves giving up something for Lent. Having said that, let me suggest a fresh take on Lenten sacri ce ideas that we all might practice or adopt or "give up" to experience God more in our life and practice. Of course, you can always put your own spin on these, and you don't have to limit yourself to only one. You can try a new one each day! They are ways to be blessed and be a blessing in our relationship to God and others! 1) Don't eat the last bite of your food. 2) Give up the rst 15 parking places closest to the door. 3) Give up texting and call whomever you need to talk to. 4) Make a list of 40 people who have touched your life in one way or another. Each day of Lent, write a note to a person on the list giving thanks for how they touched your life. Pray for that person on that day. 5) Send a different person an af rmation email every day. 6) Buy/prepare a meal for someone who doesn't expect it. 7) Insert change in a few vending machines. 8) Each day, take a picture of something or someone you're grateful for. 9) Leave a post-it with a positive message on it wherever you go. 10) Give up a meal. Donate the money saved to a food pantry. 11) Give up 1400 characters (or a day without tweeting or facebook). 12) Give up half an hour to visit someone. 13) Write a love letter to yourself. 14) Give up two hours a week in volunteering above what you normally do. 15) Leave a large tip and a note of thanks for a waiter/ waitress. 16) Thank a cleaning person at a store or restaurant, letting them know you appreciate their work. 17) Give at least 17 verbal af rmations or af rming handshakes each day to people you meet. 18) Proclaim at least three times a day, "This is the day that the Lord has made, let me rejoice and be glad in it!" What a powerful blessing it would be to be able to see each day as a gift from God. Not a challenge to be endured, but a gift to be received and treasured, shared and enjoyed!Ministerial AssociationCLEWISTON The Clewiston Ministerial Association meets at 12 p.m. on the rst Tuesday of every month in the Hendry Regional Medical Center conference room. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 8 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 13, 2014 By Craig HanksMoore Haven Correctional Facility On Tuesday, March 4, the Moore Hav en Correctional Facility conducted its rst Community Advisory Committee Meeting. Community leaders representing education, government, religious and service organizations accepted the invitation and enjoyed an information- lled lunch. Special program guests included Florida Department of Correction Regional Director Randy Tifft, and Neal Morris, manager, Florida Department of Management Services. Before lunch each participant received a current copy of Geo World Magazine and an overview of the company. Warden Craig Hanks led introductions and expressed, "It is good be back." This referred to the threey ear absence from the Moore Haven contract; GEO has returned as the facility manager effective Feb. 1, 2014. After lunch, a group discussion was initiated with emphasis on identifying all the partners and their roles at the facility. Neal Morris, DMS, spoke about their role and responsibility in contract monitoring and the service they provide to the State of Florida. Randy Tifft, DOC, spoke to the fact the inmates are received from the Florida Department of Correction and GEO is obligated to follow Florida Department of Correction policy and procedure. Warden Hanks, Morris and Tifft acknowledged how essential cooperation and meeting contract requirements are to providing service to the State of Florida and to ensure a safe and meaningful environment for the inmates during their incarceration at the Moore Haven Correctional Facility. Healthcare Services Administrator Margaret Blackmon, Correctional Health Care, spoke about the medical services and CHC's role as a medical contractor to GEO. The community participants asked questions concerning emergency training and security at the facility. Several members commented, "It is good to have GEO back." Moore Haven Correctional hosts advisory committee meeting Special to the Glades County Democra t Those attending the Advisory Committee meeting included: William Hamilton, Brenda Williams, Mike Pressley, Jenneyf a Rich, Charmonica Spivey, Richard Gloniak, Sherri Elrod, Mike Carter, Petrona Lopez, Bob Jones, Margaret Blackmon, Adrienne Adams, Elaine McGrory, Paul McGehee, Jerry Spears, Carol Federspiel, Bill Federspiel, Barbara Brown, Craig Hanks, Gary Woznick, Kirby Sullivan, John Booher, Randy Tift, Mary Booher and Neal Morris. Response to illegal drugs in Glades CountyA young man who grew up in Moore Haven said the following: "Glades County is no place for a young man unless he has a good job and a family." That was a true statement then. Moore Haven was a great place to live and raise a family. That is until now. Illegal activity has always been in the Glades County culture. In the sixties it was alligator poaching and illegal shing. Then marijuana distribution moved in. Now, it is the other drug scene, meth, coke, crack, heroin and lately the use and sale of prescription pills. Individuals and families are so dependent on the income from the sale of dope that they threaten and, yes, even murder to protect their illegal activity. Members of the community will not confront or speak out against the dope dealers because of fear for their life or the safety of their families. Dealing in illegal pills and other forms of dope makes the dealer/supplier a criminal and if arrested and convicted could spend time in prison hopefully being rehabilitated. Murder raises the criminal element to another level. When convicted in Florida, the sentence is life or the death penalty. If you committed the murder, expect the death penalty. If you helped carry it out, expect life. The really sad part of this whole illegal drug scene are those individuals addicted to the drugs willing to pay the criminals for the drugs to feed their habit and at the same time keep the drug business going while destroying their own GOD given life. The really sad part are those family members of both the dealer and addict who suffer the consequences from the arrests, jail time, loss of money, dangerous living conditions and heartache that comes with the absence of the loved one either through incarceration, hospitalization or death by drug abuse, overdose or murder. How can and should the community respond? You can take the "turn our heads the other way its not my problem" approach. You can think "let the Sheriff handle it, he was elected for that purpose." You can move away. "If you don't like the way we live here, move." You can arm yourselves our constitutional right. Go get your concealed weapons permit and be prepared for the bad guys or even go after them. You can pray about it and let God take care of it. Or you can be HIS instrument and be proactive with strong education from an early age up at home and by demanding the school district provide it. At the same time you can be alert in your neighborhood and report suspicious and known illegal activity to the local authorities. You can be anonymous by calling CRIMESTOPPERS. If you know anyone connected with the recent murder of Mario Hughes, call CRIMESTOPPERS today. Mario grew up in Moore Haven, is an Iraqi Freedom War Veteran, and was still serving as a military policeman in the United States Army Reserve. He had two sons and a daughter who will never really know their father. He died at the foot of his mother in a pool of blood from a bullet through the heart, shot in the back in his parent's home. Why was he ambushed and executed? Probably because he had and was helping the local authorities slow down illegal drug traf cking in Glades County. The time to act in Glades County is now or Glades will be like Lee County with 12 unsolved murders, mostly drug and gang related. Call CRIMESTOPPERS today if you know anything related to this tragic event.CRIMESTOPPERS: How It WorksIn the event that a crime, or arson tip, leads to an arrest or conviction, the anonymous caller can be awarded up to $1,000 for providing the information. This reward is sent anonymously using Western Union. Norman Hughes Moore Haven Letter to the editor CORRECTIONMOORE HAVEN -An online article on Florida.Newszap.com about the death of Mario Monroy Hughes dated Feb. 6, 2014, mentioned his arrest record by saying in 2012 he was arrested on felony charges of burglary and tampering with evidence, and misdemeanors charges of resisting a law enforcement of cer without violence and petit theft. According to a spokeswoman with the District 20 State Attorney's Of ce in Fort Myers all of those charges had, in fact, been dropped. We apologize for the error. The online story has been updated. March 2014 Going Out: A guide to area entertainment and attractions 1Readers share their own ‘fish tales’Who has the best story about shing the big lake? We invited readers to submit their “ sh tales”. Prize for the best story, a $100 gift certi cate to Tin Fish Restaurant, goes to Carroll Head. If you missed the contest, don’t worry. We plan to make it an annual event, which will give you plenty of time to work on your entry for next year! For the winning story and a selection of the best of the rest, read on ...The winning ‘fish tale’: CompetitionBy Carroll HeadThe Taylor Creek Bass Club has been in existence for nearly 30 years with arguably the best bass lake in the nation as its home lake. Within the club are a number of skilled and highly-competitive shermen who compete for the Angler of the Y ear Trophy by having the best tournament catches during the year. However, no one ever expected that one particular sherman would go to such lengths to win the coveted trophy. The story of w hat happened on that incredible day is still talked about nationally and laughed about locally, and called just another big sh story by some. However, here is what really happened. The deciding tournament was held out of the Scott Driver Boat Ramp Facility during December, when the bass shing on Lake Okeechobee was tremendous down in the Harney Pond Canal area. Everyone in the club knew w here the best shing spot was, and it w as a fairly small area near Bird Island. So, that’s where most of us would h ave loved to sh during the tournament. There were two good shermen who w ere very close together in the standings for Angler of the Year. One had the faster boat (it ran over 70 mph) and no doubt w ould get to that spot rst. Most of us j ust kinda’ accepted that and knew he w ould probably win the award. We also knew the other contender for the trophy, w ho had the second fastest boat in the club, was not a good loser. Well, the morning of the start, everyone headed down toward Harney Pond as fast as we could run, and sure enough, the two fastest boats passed us before we could get to the Pierce Canal. The faster boat moved out in front, barely ahead of old second best, gradually leaving the rest of us. The boat trail that year was narrow inside Second Point with heavy cattails and thick joint grass along the sides. When the rst boat broke into the clearing of Tin House Cove, an incredible sight loomed to his right. A beautiful woman stood alone in the bow of a large bass boat waving her white shirt. The driver of the boat instinctively throttled back a little … but then he saw that she was nude from the waist up, very well endowed, and without thinking, jerked his foot away from his “Hot Foot” accelerator. The second boat was following so closely behind there was no way he could stop and the boat went airborne when the bow hit the engine ahead of him—damaging it, it turned out. Both shermen were thrown out, thankfully with no injuries. The rest of us slowed and nding nothing critical but disabled boats, headed for the good shing spot. Meanwhile, the woman put her shirt back on and motored away, having done her job. It turned out she was from the coast and had been well paid by old second best, but she had stationed herself too closely to the trail coming into Tin House Cove and he had crashed into rather than overtaken the faster boat. The real truth nally came out from the woman herself who felt guilty about it. Old second best got kicked out of the club. Everything else seemed fair in Taylor Creek Club tournament shing and the Angler of the Year award was won by an 88-year-old expert who had the third fastest boat.Fishing by ‘my rules’By Anita CurtisFishing is not my bag! And I’ve done my share of shing, including catching a 25-pound King salmon in Alaska and a tangle of lines and plugs with many, many “rigs” in it. But I enjoyed Lake Okeechobee when we used to go out under “my rules.” In my opinion, “ shing” is best done in the late afternoon, about an hour before sunset. It requires a good book, a straw hat, a cold drink and lots of suntan lotion. Motoring out from the mouth of the Kissimmee River, I notice the slap of the water against the boat and later the soft splash as the anchor enters the water. As the sky turns into an artist’s pallet of warm pastels, the water calms into glass and the local fauna rejoices, my heart sings as I breathe the soft warm air and see the ribbon of gold the sinking sun lays across the water. In the gathering dusk, my bobber trembles, and I rather hope no sh dares to break the spell. Back home the water pipes are frozen and the walk needs to be shoveled. Here I sit in delicious comfort as the breeze picks up, soft on my cheeks. Suddenly, my bobber disappears and I grab for the pole. A huge crappie breaks the surface and joins his brothers in the live well with my husband’s catch. With tomorrow’s dinner assured, it is time to go. Now THAT was a perfect shing trip!A misstep and a scareBy Gene ClaytonMy brother-in-law (Kirk Manning) and I h ave been coming to Okeechobee in the spring for about 25 years, so we have c ollected quite a few shing tales and memories. One of the more memorable ones, is a trip a few years back, where “one of us” (and that will remain a secret) had a scare with an alligator. There was an alligator that had been trailing us for a while, and it was interesting to watch him, ‘til one of us made a misstep on the boat, and a BIG SPLASH LATER, a frantic attempt to get back in the boat before the alligator landed his dinner meal! Yes, that is a tale that has brought many laughs over the years ... also had to replace four rods that were broken in the attempt to reboard the boat! Needless to say, this happened pretty quick, no time for a picture, but the attached picture is of me and a monster crappie just caught on Feb. 26. Fun times on Lake Okeechobee year after year. The Alligator LadyBy Anna McBeeI live at Brothers R.V. Park on U.S. Highway 441 S.E. About four years ago, I was shing o our wooden sidewalk with arti cial bait on my rod and reel. I got a bite and was pulling it in with a little pan sh on the hook. All of the sudden, a medium-size bass caught my sh! As I was pulling the bass, it went down real deep. I pulled hard on it but I thought it was hung on something. Then a big alligato r stuck his head up out of the water with my bass in his mouth. He shook his head and broke my line and away he went. After that I was called the “Alligator Lady” in my park. Not a bassBy Robert MclauryShawn, Tyler and I went shiner shing in Lake Okeechobee. We put the boat in at Okee-Tantie and headed to the hone y hole. We had two dozen shiners. The rs t bite went to 9-year-old Tyler who reeled in an awesome 6-pound largemouth. We had a great morning and caught a lot o f sh. By the time we were down to our las t three shiners, Tyler had four bass, Shawn had two and I had two. All of a sudden, my bobber goes down and I set up, “alright” so I start reeling in the sh. Then, he starts coming to the surface about ve feet from the boat. It’s not a bass! It’s a 3-foot water moccasin! Shawn shouts, “stop reeling it in, let’s cut the line.” So, we cut it as close as we could. It was a close call. I never though t that I would catch a water moccasin on a shiner. Then, we were down to just two shiners. My bobber went down and I missed. So, now we’re down to our last shiner and the bobber goes down and it’s a 7-pound largemouth. One more for Shawn and we’re out of shiners. Now, we start using arti cial bait. All of a sudden, anothe r water moccasin (not the same one) tried to get on the boat. I had to use my pole as a sword. I did my best “Zorro” impression and scared him o After that, we pulled up anchor and moved to a di erent spot. Still can’t believe it, two water moccasins in one day. What are the odds? All in all, it was a great trip and one we’ll never forget.

BUSINESS AGENDA 4. Seek Funding for Training Center Board gave of cial authority to direct CAS Governmental Services to pursue appropriations to construct a training center in the county's industrial park subject to receipt of letters of commitment from educational institutions and others. Mr. Carlisle stated he has received a commitment letter of support from St. Onge, and explained that at his meeting yesterday with Economic Development Directors, each member was assigned contacts to make to get the letters which are necessary documentation needed by Dale Milita and staff when requesting appropriations from the Legislature. 5. Planning Commission Appointments Board voted to appoint Han Mouthaan and reappoint Shannon Hall and James Cianfrani to the Local Planning Agency for a two year term that will expire March 31, 2016. Services are provided by LPA members as volunteers and they are charged with reviewing and making recommendations for planning, zoning and land development regulation and comprehensive land use plan amendments to the Board and rule on variance applications. This important agency is the gateway to desirable growth and economic development in Glades County. The services of these volunteers are much appreciated. Other members include Jack Wilson, Carl Perry, Steve Dobbs, and Ellen Beers whose terms expire 3/31/15. 6. American Earth Movers Upon recommendation by County Attorney Pringle, Board voted to remit to American Earth Movers $99.006.91 as nal settlement payment, less $5,000 which will be remitted when the contractor provides all lien releases and contractors waivers for the project performed which was dredging at Harney Pond Canal. 7. Contract with Wright Construction for EOC: In separate actions, Board moved to approve the AIA Document and rst addendum to the contract with Wright Construction to manage the construction of the Emergency Operations Center, and to accept the value engineered adjusted scope of work with tentative Guaranteed Maximum Price GMP of $4,178,000 directing the architect (CRA) to revise the plans to re ect the changes in scope. When architects have nished, then Wright will present to the Board nal GMP. Commissioner Beck inserted language in the motion that any change orders and remittance from contingency funds would be authorized only by this Board. 8. Consider the Purchase of the BOMA Property In response to the request of South Florida Water Management District [SFWMD] to act on rst option concerning 237 acres of the 1780 BOMA property on SR 80 south of Ortona Locks, Board moved to not exercise the right to purchase the property. SFWMD also requested the Board to consider parceling the property and Board moved to recommend two of the three options that would be conducive to commercial, industrial or even residential development. 9. Selection of Vice Chair Commissioner Beck declined to accept Chairman Storter's nomination to serve as vice chair and then nominated Commissioner Stanley. Board voted 4-0 to appoint Stanley to serve as Vice Chair until the Board reorganizes in December 2014. CONSTITUTIONAL OFFICERS COUNTY ATTORNEY Mr. Pringle informed the Board he is still working with various state agencies concerning lease of the Alvin Ward Board Ramp with Corp of Engineers, Cypress Knee Museum with Dept of Environmental Protection [DEP], and preparing a ood plain ordinance when maps are completed. He said he is awaiting response from all of them. COUNTY MANAGER Mr. Carlisle reported that he and Commissioner Echols had met with SFWMD concerning the county acquiring 88 acres owned b y WMD just south of the city limits of Moore Haven on Riverside Drive which goes from the river westward to West Avenue. Commissioner Echols stated WMD is willing to utilize other sites for dumping of spoil material but the Corps of Engineers has not yet agreed. Commissioner Echols stated the location of the property makes it suitable for development from commercial on the river to industrial on the west end. Mr. Carlisle stated he had heard from DEP representative Bob Beck giving his tentative agreement to the changes Mr. Carlisle proposed for the agreement to lease the Cypress Knee Museum property, but Mr. Beck was having to get legal review. Mr. Carlisle reported that Hendry Glades Behavioral Health Center [HGBHC] has requested the Board to appoint its representative to serve on HGBHC Board of Directors. He then introduced Pat Dobbins, Hendr y Glades Health Department Director to present information about the Center and appeal for funding of the HGBHC facility in LaBelle. Ms. Dobbins informed the Board that last year 600 Glades County citizens had utilized services of HGBHC in 1,595 visits which accounted for 13.2% of the services provided by the clinic. She stated HGBHC also serves Glades County Schools as needed for students' behavior issues. She said she serves on their Board as does Hendry County Commissioner Janet Taylor. Ms. Dobbbins assured the Board that great efforts are made to seek grant and other funding and the center operates quite lean with its $1.5 million budget. She said considerations are being given to partnering with other centers to provide services and she urged the Board to consider nancially supporting HGBHC. 13.2 percent of $1.million is $198,000. This Board budgeted $1,000 for HGBHC this 2013-2014 scal year, down from $19,582 in 2012-2013; the prior three year average was $38, 765 per year. Considerations will be given during budget workshops. The HGMHC Board of Directors meets monthly on the third Tuesday from noon to 1 PM and lunch is provided. Volunteers interested in serving as a Director please contact Mr. Carlisle at 946-6000 or pcarlisle@myglades. com COMMISSIONERS ITEMS AND COMMENTS Commissioner Beck commented on his participation in his rst meeting representing Glades County on the County Coalition for the responsible management of Lake Okeechobee. He informed the Board that this group is working together to help all the counties and seems to understand the rural counties water issues and collectively have a voice that matters with more power in the Legislature. He said Commissioner Echols had made great progress with the Board as he had served on it since its inception. ADJOURN County Commission meeting notes 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 13 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 13, 2014 our state's top STEM talent and introduce them to all the Sunshine State has to offer in college and career choices," said Dominic M. Calabro, chairman of the Florida Education Foundation. "The investment we make today in these young leaders will encourage many more students to pursue postsecondary careers in high-skill, high-wage jobs that help grow Florida's economy." "Helios Education Foundation is committed to changing lives through education and ensuring that every student in Florid a graduates college and career ready," said Paul Luna, Helios Education Foundation President and CEO. "We join you in celebrating the accomplishments of our outstanding Florida STEM scholars who will graduate academically prepared to succeed and thrive in tomorrow's globally competitive workforce." STEMContinued From Page 1 EOC to be placed on route 78. Glades County received a grant to help build the new complex but ran into problems with the former contractor. $4.178 million will be the estimated costs of building the new complex. This agreement will be sent to the State of Florida for their approval because they are funding the project. Once it is returned, both parties will sign the agreement, and w ork will begin in earnest on the design of the project. There is no timetable for when those documents will be approved. American Earth Movers will be paid just under $100,000 provided they send the county a release of lien for the work they did to nish the Harney Pond Canal Project. County Attorney Richard Pringle reported the agreement was a fair and equitable release for liquidated damages. Glades County voted (3-0) not to purchase 237 acres deemed surplus by the South Florida Water Management District known as the Boma property. Commissioner Tim Stanley declared a con ict of interest on the discussion and vote because he is an employee of the district. Commissioner Echols said the County does not have the nances to purchase the property. Commissioner Paul Beck said State Road 80 will be a major thoroughfare and the Boma property could one day be developed into an industrial or manufacturing use. In other actions the Commission named Tim Stanley as the Vice Chairman of the Board. Commissioner Beck declined the nomination because he enjoys being able to make motions at meetings and recommended Commissioner Stanley. The Attorney's of ce continues work on a new ood plain ordinance, a lease agreement on the Alvin Ward Boat Ramp with the US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Cypress Knee Museum lease with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. County Manager Paul Carlisle said an 80 acre piece of property owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers could be made available to the County. It is directly south of Moore Haven on Riverside Drive and could provide a spot for commercial development. Commissioner Russell Echols and Mr. Carlisle met with Corps last week to discuss the property. Echols called it a unique piece of property that might provide potential for commercial and even industrial development. Director of the Glades County Health Department Pat Dobbins made a presentation about mental health services in rural areas. Last year 600 Glades County residents received mental health services at Hendry Glades Behavioral Health. "Nobody wants to expand services. I would be truthful by stating this is not an organization that is sucking up money and not doing anything. They provide services." She requested the County send a representative to the agency's monthly meeting. Mr. Beck gave a report on the March 7th meeting of the Lake Okeechobee Coalition. He praised the purpose of the coalition and stated it gets things done. He said it also gives small counties a chance to explain the problems they face when it comes to water and environmental issues. So far only Chairman Donna Storter Long has quali ed to run for re-election this year. Russell Echols term is up this year and three school board seats will be up for grabs. The Commission appointed Cornelis Mouthaan to the Glades County Planning commission. They also reappointed Shannon Hall and James Cianfrani. All these terms are for two years. The Commission also voted to support an effort to receive an appropriate from the Florida legislature for the construction of a new job training center in the Glades County Business Park in Moore Haven. The Board also approved a proclamation that honors the life and contributions of late Commissioner Dennis Grif n. His wife Beth and daughter Nancy were on hand to receive the proclamation. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 20 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 13, 2014 Even though Glades County Woman’s Club is a service club, several times during the club year their members get together just to have fun. The Membership Tea last Saturday was one of those days. It turned out to be a brunch with tea being served, and the women wearing gorgeous hats. Even though she is not a member of GCWC, Keely Farnam was voted “Classiest Out t, Including Her Hat.” She was attending to invite members to a ceremony to stamp out tobacco use. Beautiful hats run in her family, as her mom’s, Aletris Farnam’s, was voted “Most Beautiful Hat.” This was a three-layer pink creation with rhinestones surrounding each layer, and the envy of everyone. Dawn Garrison was adorable in a hat she created and was voted “Most Original Hat.” These ladies will receive a trophy at a later meeting. Bobbi Brown was given the honor of initiating Bette Davis, as an Honorary Lifetime Member of GCWC. She is the third member that has received this honor. Wally Snyder, received the honor for his service to the club in restoring their clubhouse. The other was also a man who is deceased. Bobbi pointed out that “our club is actually older than Moore Haven, as we were organized in 1916. She told her “no more dues to pay, and no members’ dues to keep up with as you did as treasurer for many years, no meetings to attend unless you really want to, no committees to serve on, and no more phone calls reminding members that “tomorrow is club meeting.” Bobbi quoted “The Club Woman’s Creed,” which was repeated at every meeting of local, state and national woman’s clubs. In this “Collect for Club Women,” Mary Stewart wrote “...may we meet each other face-to-face without selfpity or prejudice” and “make us grow calm, serene, gentle.” And Bobbi admonished that “Bette, if you become aggravated, disturbed and violent, we’ll try to look the other way, because in 63 years of serving our community through Glades County Woman’s Club, you’ve deserved it.” She then gave Bette a marigold plant, the club’s of cial ower; and President, Kim Clement, presented her with a plaque indicating her honor. Also initiated into Glades County Woman’s Club were: Katrina Fey, sponsored by Dee Dee Beck; Dawn Garrison, sponsored by Aletris Farnam; and Tina He in, sponsored by Jenny Allen. Following their presentation by the sponsors, Kim initiated them and presented each with a marigold plant. Several more new members were unable to attend, and will be initiated at a regular club meeting. An announcement was made that there will be a fundraising barbecue on April 5 at the Lakeport Community Center. As David Beck has helped the Glades County Woman’s Club in many ways, they voted to donate to this fundraiser, and members were asked to contribute cupcakes.
