Wisdom Comes With AgeBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchI woke up this morning one year older. Some days I handle it better than others. All my life, I’ve been taught to respect my elders. Now I am one. I’m reminded of what one friend shared with me, “You know you are getting older when you try to straighten out the wrinkles in your socks only to nd you aren’t wearing any.” Growing older. Aging. We can laugh about it, make jokes about it, and groan about it, but we can’t stop it. So, what do we do with birthdays? As much as we might like to avoid them, we can’t. So why not celebrate them? Birthdays are good for us. The more we have, the longer we live. According to the Scriptures, “advanced years should teach wisdom,” so here is some of mine. Pocket the ones you nd of value, toss those you don’t. A positive mind-set can make your day. It’s better to set your mind so that when you wake up you can say, “Good morning, Lord,” and not, “Good Lord, it’s morning.” Words can hurt people more than sticks and stones. Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. But when you forget, never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on. There would be fewer problems with children if they had to chop wood to keep the television set going. Teenagers will do dumb things. Whoever came up with the phrase to “sleep like a baby” probably didn’t have one. Drive carefully. It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their maker. More often than not, it’s the second mouse that gets the cheese. The easy way is not always the best way; and, often, the harder it is to do something, the stronger it makes you. A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour. To say no to someone is not wrong. We could learn a lot from crayons -some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull and some have weird names, but they all have to live in the same box. There is truth and value to what Robert Fulghum shared in “All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten.” Think what a better world it would be if everyone had cookies and milk at about three o’clock every afternoon, then laid down with their blankies for a nap. Or if all governments and people had a basic policy to always put things back where they found them and to clean up their own messes. And it is still true, no matter how many birthdays we’ve had, when we go out into the world, it’s best to hold hands and stick together. Life is not fair, but God is good. Together, we can all make it through with this truth.Defending Your FaithCLEWISTON — How can an individual defend his faith in a world that casts doubt? How can an individual answer the doubter, the skeptic and the atheist? The Sunday night series at Community Christian Church continue this Sunday at 6 p.m. Community Christian Church is located at 201 N Francisco Street in Clewiston. The series began Jan. 12; each session is about one-hour in length. Subjects to be covered are: What is Christian Apologetics? How can we answer the doubters? Is the text of the Bible accurate and trustworthy? How do we know the people, places, and events of the Bible are true? How can God be in all places at the same time? How can God hear millions of prayers at the same time? What is the Nature and Reality of this world and universe? Can we know for sure that Jesus did rise from the dead? The session will be led by Mr. Jon Loftis and Dr. E. Arlin Bolejack. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Public school families and employees are invited to bank with Suncoast, Florida’s largest credit union. LOWEST PRICE EVERYDAY! 5 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee January 30, 2014 RELIGION NEWS AND INFORMATION John Hicks BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe Crested Caracara is a tropical version of a vulture. Its range in the United States is normally only in Arizona, Texas and Florida. The subspecies known as Audubon’s Crested Caracara is present year-round in Florida. There are only about 250 pairs of this federally threatened subspecies nesting in Florida, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. The Crested Caracara is a large, long-legged tropical falcon about the size of an Osprey. It is often referred to as the Mexican Eagle. It has a black cap, black body and a white tail with a wide, black tip. The bare skin on its face is bright orange-red when it is at rest, preening or engaged in other non-aggressive behaviors. When threatened, the facial skin changes to a pumpkin color and, nally, to a pale yellow. The crest at the end of the Caracara’s cap lays at when it is comfortable and not threatened, but it will raise its crest when it feels threatened, frightened or is on alert. This bird is mostly silent. During courtship, or in the early morning or evening, it may throw its head back until it almost touches its shoulders and make a high, crackling sound that resembles its Brazilian name. Caracara are often reported in dry or wet prairie areas with scattered cabbage palms, or are seen eating carrion along roadways in the counties surrounding Lake Okeechobee. Their diet includes carrions, insects, mammals and invertebrates, including sh, snakes, turtles, birds and mammals. Crested Caracaras are often reported along County Road 833 in Hendry County and County Road 78 in Glades County. Caracara nest as early as September, with the height of their nesting season in January or February. Adult Caracaras are territorial and form persistent pair bonds. Their bulky nest of vines and sticks is usually built in a cabbage palm. The female lays one to four white or buffy colored eggs that are incubated for 32 to 33 days. The young remain in the nest for approximately eight weeks. These birds reach sexual maturity when they are three to four years old. Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers often see Caracara and other bird species at STA-5 in south Hendry County. Last week, 93 species were observed, including Caracara. Anyone interested in participating in the free driving trips at STA-5 on Feb. 1, 15, 16 or 17 should e-mail Margaret England at sta5birding@embarqmail.com or call 863-6740695 or 863-517-0202. The schedule of STA-5 trips through December 2014, and upcoming Hendry-Glades Audubon programs, are available on the HGAS website at: www.hendrygladesaudubon.org. Bicycling/walking is now available during daylight hours on Friday, Saturday and Monday year-round at STA-5. Amenities at the Deer Fence Public Trailhead at east end of Deer Fence Road include a public parking area, signage and composting toilet. Make a note on the calendar for Hendry County’s “O” Birding Festival, being held March 9 through 13. For information about the trips, programs and activities, visit www.bigobirdingfestival.com, call 863-675-0444 or e-mail bigobirdingfestival@ gmail.com. By Barbara BrownSpecial to the Glades County Democrat If you or your spouse are over 50 years old, you missed a really fun time at the Keenager’s Redneck Unbirthday Party! You’ve never been to an Unbirthday Party? It is where you get the presents, instead of giving them. On the door to the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church was a big sign welcoming all rednecks to the party, and once inside, the tables were decorated with centerpieces featuring cowboy boots holding periwinkles and moss. Place mats had signs stating “Celebrate,” and “Happy Birthday Y’all” on them. Everyone’s birthday was celebrated by presents wrapped in unique newspaper — mostly Glades County Democrats — with paper owers and bows. In keeping with the theme of their idea of how rednecks dress for a party, all the ladies wore absurdly decorated hats, and most of the men wore suspenders. Following a ham dinner with all the trimmings, Liz Devinney presented Bobbi Brown with a Bible and a card signed by everyone in appreciation for her work with Keenagers. This is not a gathering for just members of First Baptist, but for anyone fty years or older. Mark your calendar for the third Thursday in February. Hopefully, we will be able to view the movie featuring Gator Fred and his friends. I understand it is a reenactment of that terrible day when a gator attacked and bit Fred Langdale’s arm off. The date is Thursday, Feb. 20, and will be a covered dish dinner at noon. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 8 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee January 30, 2014 Special to the Glades County DemocratPoint of Light Fellowship Church hosts guest speakersPoint of Light Fellowship Church will host a revival with Bennie and Tammy Jones, at 15399 Hwy. 78, in Lakeport. Resolution Authorizing Ortona Community Association to conduct bingo Board adopted resolution to allow OCA to conduct bingo at the Ortona Community Center at 2086 Ortona Locks Rd. Commissioner Echols commended the association for its steps in creating activities and opportunities for funding themselves. 4. Encumber SHIP Funds from 2013 2014 Funding Board approved $20,000 down payment assistance from SHIP. 6. Vacant Land Lease Board authorized advertising to lease 42 acres of county property south and west of the Road Department for the purpose of noninvasive agricultural uses. Discussion included possible term lengths to be considered, indemni cation of the county, termination terms, forfeiture of improvements and other items. Commissioner Echols heads up the Land Lease Committee that also includes Road Sup't Avant Brown and County Manager Carlisle. Mr. Carlisle says the ad will solicit responses of proposed uses and terms that will be negotiated, then brought to the board for consideration and approval. 7. CDBG Waiver Request Board authorized the chairman to sign a waiver letter to the Department of Economic Opportunity to request up to $3 million CDBG funding for the infrastructure the county must provide for the travel center project. Commissioner Echols abstained from voting as his employer owns property that will site the travel center. 8. RFP For CDBG Consultant Services Board authorized the County Manager to advertise a Request For Proposals [RFP] for CDBG grant writing and administration services. Commissioner Echols abstained from voting. Tracy Whirls, Executive Director of the Glades County Economic Development Council reminded the board of the FDOT meeting at the Health Department auditorium on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 9 a.m. at which Transportation Secretary Ananth Prasad will address transportation matters involved with the Industrial Park and Americas Gateway. 9. Environmental Mitigation Maintenance Plan for Moonshine Marsh (Moore Haven Canal) Project At the request of Commissioner Echols, board moved to create a line item in the Road Dept Budget for environmental mitigation maintenance to be used for the Moonshine Marsh Project in the amount of $10,000. Echols explained that federal permitting required the county to prove now nancial ability to begin maintenance of environmental mitigation ve years after the project is completed, and the $10,000 will be transferred from the remaining $93,000 funding received from Water Mgt for the project. County Manager County Manager Paul Carlisle requested and was granted consensus of the board to work with lobbyists in seeking grant funding for storm water improvements in the county's industrial park. Carlisle stated the county's lease of Alvin Ward Park was extended when it expired last year and he is working with Attorney Pringle to tweak the renewal agreement and should be bringing it to the board at the next meeting. Carlisle reported he is working with DEP Staff concerning lease options for the Cypress Knee Museum property and DEP Staff now seems more amenable to considerations requested by Carlisle and formerly by Attorney Pringle. Chairman Storter stated she had assigned this agreement contract negotiation to Mr. Carlisle and was stepping back from being the "middle man" in the project. Carlisle has met with Water Management District's Gary Ritter concerning the WMD's Boma property and will be bringing maps to the board next month for review and consideration of acquisition of surplus property and/ or board's preferred determination of the size/ location of the area in the parcel along SR80 to be declared surplus by WM. Carlisle reported that $350,000 has been secured for the next sewer line project in the City of Moore Haven. Carlisle stated he and Public Safety Director Bob Jones visited the property in Buckhead Ridge that Commissioner Stanley had inquired about code enforcement issues; Carlisle stated the owner has a property manager who has not followed through on management matters and there are also back taxes due on the property, but he felt matters would soon improve. Chairman Storter inquired about equity in the county funding requested by Community Associations in their county-owned property management agreements, reminding the board of the budget cuts for pest control, telephone, and security alarm services but that the county is continuing to fund electricity, water, propane gas and garbage collection. Commissioner Echols reiterated his position that with limited revenue, our future budgets may not have funding for services that are not core county services, and that only a small percentage of people are using county facilities funded by all taxpayers. Discussion followed and Mr. Carlisle is to rst report on historical county payments for services provided each community facility managed by others, and then create options for fair and equitable sharing of costs to be outlined in property management agreements. Commissioner Echols emphasized his position that payment not budgeted for services should be cut off and the Board unanimousl y concurred. Public Input On Non-Agenda Items Commissioners Items and Comments Commissioner Stanley stated he had been approached by a local member of Ducks Unlimited who would like to fund a oating doc k and lighting at Indian Prairie boat ramp, no w maintained by the county. It was determined that Florida Fish and Wildlife controlled the ramp at Indian Prairie and Commissioner Stanley would pass along the information. Road Superintendent Avant Brown commented that the banks along Indian Prairie Canal are ver y steep and it is practically impossible for boats to dock along the bank. Commissioner Echols stated he hoped this last "hoop" (see item 9 above) was the last step to getting the nal permits in place for the Moonshine Marsh Moore Haven Canal project. He said the state permitting process was streamlined but not the federal. Chairman Storter inquired if the board had a consensus on the request from City of Moore Haven Public Works Director Jerri Lynn Schlueter for assistance in funding city recreational projects. Discussion followed about the items being built and the county's tight budget. Commissioner Echols stated the county put out a lot o f money and built a ball eld in the city that appears it is not being used, and, he didn't thin k we had much in the one-cent fund. The board declined to add the city's request to the next agenda. Chairman Storter said she has requested Finance Clerk Brenda Choban to prepare a current spreadsheet of the one-cent discretionar y tax revenue to include revenue received, interest earned, funds expended, funds encumbered for un nished projects, and balance o f funds unencumbered, and she will provide each commissioner a copy when it is completed. ADJOURN These agenda notes are prepared by Donna Storter who is solely responsible for their content. By Austin MoorhouseSpecial to the Glades County Democrat Butch Wilson, Director of the Clewiston Museum and local historian, did the presentation on the hurricanes of 1926 and 1928 at the Friends of the Library meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Thirty-seven people attended this presentation which was very interesting, entertaining and informative. Butch is a sixth generation “Cracker” who took us for a walk in the past describing the events that led up to these two lethal storms. He presented pictures and drawings of the ood areas as they were at that time of the storms and described the very rst dikes that were constructed. These rst dikes were only 6-feet high. There were pictures depicting some of the tremendous destruction of these storms and he told of the loss of many, many lives. W e also learned how the new Hoover Dike came about. Most all of the inland towns of South Florida are less than 100 years old and the history and development of these towns as well as knowledge of the individuals who lived here within the last 100 years will be lost if it is not recorded at this time. Consequently, Butch Wilson is interested in conducting interviews with old-timers who may remember many of the events that took place during the development of these towns within the last hundred years. Butch is interested in the stories, yarns, tales and memories that some of our seniors have experienced. If you know any “Florida Crackers” who would be willing to be interviewed to share their experiences with regard the history of inland Florida towns, please contact Butch Wilson at the Clewiston Museum. The next regular meeting of the Friends of the Library will be on March 17, at 5:30 p.m. in the conference room at the library. The presentation will be “Boy Homesteading at Lakeport” by Debbie Cick Paschal. The public is welcome to attend and there is no cost. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 14 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee January 30, 2014 W ilson speaks at library meeting Special to the Glades County Democrat/ Lacy GreenArt in the ParkOn Jan. 25, the Glades County Library and Advisory Board held Art In The Park at the city park in Moore Haven.
