GLADES COUNTY—The driver of a 2007 Chrysler Town & Country van was killed around 12:42 a.m. Oct. 1 in an accident involving three vehicles on State Road 78. According to the Florida Highway Patrol Report, Kenneth Peters, 54, was prounounced dead at the scene of the crash. According to the FHP report, Mr. Peters’ van was traveling eastbound on State Road 78 approaching Tomato Grade Road when, for unknown reasons, the van crossed over the westbound lane in a northeasterly direction, causing the left side of the van to collide with a guardrail on the north side of SR 78. The van was redirected toward the southeast and began to rotate counter-clockwise while crossing over the eastbound lane. The van entered the south grassy shoulder and struck a tree stump, causing the vehicle to change direction, rotating clockwise, then tip onto its left side as it crashed into a tree and arrived at its nal resting place, facing south. Mr. Peters got out o f the vehicle and walked to the north shoulder of the road. Ricky Lynn Mattox, 53, of Avon Park was driving a 2005 Kenworth Truck approaching the initial crash scene. As Mr. Mattox’s truc k approached, Mr. Peters walked south, into the eastbound lane and stepped into the path of the oncoming truck, according to the FHP report. The front of the truck struc k Mr. Peters, who was then thrown into the westbound lane. Man killed in SR 78 crash See CRASH — Page 8 By Charles M. Special to the Glades County Democrat Inner tubes. Towables. In atable tubes. All are commonly used names for a popular boating item, and they come in many different shapes and sizes. "Towed water sports can be a great way to enjoy Florida's beautiful waterways," said Maj. Richard Moore, head of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC) Boating and Waterways Section. "We just want everyone to be as safe as possible when doing so." Unfortunately, there have been several recent accidents around the state in which passengers on a towable device struck an object, such as a dock, channel marker, piling or other boat. Last year, ve people were injured and two were killed during these types of accidents. The FWC says these and other accidents can be prevented through a few key precautions, including one particularly important one. "When you are operating a boat that is towing passengers on a tube or something similar, their fate is in your hands," Moore said. "They are not able to steer themselves in a safe direction and must rely on you to keep them safe. The main safety consideration is keeping them away from all other objects." Although there is no required speci c distance to keep away from xed objects or other boats, operators should not pull the tuber close enough to anything where there is risk of collision. Doing so could not only result in a citation but, more importantly, it puts the life of the person being towed in jeopardy. "A good rule of thumb is this: Twice the line should be ne," Moore said. "If you consider the length of your towline and are diligent in keeping your boat at least two lengths of your towline away from all boats and other objects, you are much more likely to provide your riders with an enjoyable, safe time on the water." The FWC says that these additional safety tips are very important as well: Any riders being towed behind a vessel are required to wear a life jacket; however, it cannot be the in atable style. The boat operator must have another person onboard who can observe the rider(s) being towed and alert the operator of any issues. In place of the observer, the operator may use appropriate wide-angle rear-view mirrors. However, the safest bet is to use a "spotter" or observer. That way, the operator can concentrate on driving the boat and pay attention to what is in front o f and around him or her. The spotter has a much better ability to watch the person being towed. Boaters may pull riders on towable water sport items only during the day from a half-hour before sunrise until a half-hour past sunset. The FWC wants to ensure that boaters can enjoy all that Florida's waterways have to offer. For more boating information, go to MyFWC.com/Boating and click on "Boating Regulations" or "Safety & Education." 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARINGS FOR COMPREHENSIVE PLAN AMENDMENT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND FUTURE LAND USE ELEMENTS DATE AND LOCATION CHANGENotice is hereby given that the Local Planning Agency of Hendry County (LPA) will hold a public hearing on the proposed amendment to the Hendry County Comprehensive Plan on October 23, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hendry County Courthouse, Commission Chambers, 25 E. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 8 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee October 3, 2013 Football season brings opportunities for sustainable festivitiesWith football season upon us, tailgating parties abound; but with the fun of cheering for the home team comes a lot of unnecessary waste. Waste Management of Glades County offers tips to the community on how to go green when tailgating. “We love football season and all the festivities surrounding it, but we like to encourage more green practices that folks often don’t think about,” said Teresa Chandler, Community Relations of Waste Management of Glades County. Ms. Chandler said there are simple things any fan can do to green a tailgate, like: Knowing what is recyclable and what is not. For instance, glass and plastic bottles, aluminum cans and cardboard are often recyclable, but other items—like foam cups—may not be. Using your reusable bags for shopping and when bringing items to and from the party. Buying tailgating supplies in bulk and ensuring they’re made with recycled content. You’ll reduce packaging waste, save money and rest easy knowing that these items can probably be recycled again. Purchasing reusable and unbreakable cups, dishes, utensils and cloth napkins. If you must buy one-use items, use paper-based plates and cups that are compostable. Bringing reusable water bottles and large thermoses for beverages. Barbecuing with natural products made from environmentally friendly sources or all natural, chemical-free charcoal. Making your food and beverages from local ingredients. Buying from the community supports the local economy and reduces the emissions and packaging needed for transporting products from greater distances. “We wish everyone lots of fun this football season and remind them, no matter what colors their team sports, to think green,” Ms. Chandler said. Waste Management says: Green Your Tailgate Party Mr. Mattox stopped his truck on the south, paved apron of SR 78 and turned on his hazard lights. Thomas Lee Miller, 51, of Okeechobee, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer, also eastbound on SR 78, approaching the crash scene. Mr. Miller steered his vehicle into the westbound lane to go around Mr. Mattox’s stopped truck. The front of the Trailblazer hit the Mr. Peters, who was lying in the center o f the westbound lane. Mr. Miller continued past the scene, stopped and returned to stop in a protective position near Mr. Peters, within the westbound lane. JOBSContinued From Page 1 CLEWISTON—U.S. Sugar began its 83rd annual sugarcane harvesting and processing season at 4 a.m. on Oct. 1 with harvest operations in Palm Beach, Hendry and Glades counties. The Clewiston Sugar Factory began processing the rst railcars of cane at noon. Both the harvesting and processing operations run 24/7 during the sugarcane harvest season that runs through early April. “We’ve been ooded both with rainfall and subsidized Mexican sugar,” said Judy Sanchez, senior director of corporate communications and public affairs. “The results are both a smaller crop and sugar prices that have dropped 50% in the last two years.” Ms. Sanchez said that U.S. Sugar expects to produce about seven million tons of sugarcane, harvesting approximately 6.54 million tons of sugarcane for processing at the Clewiston Sugar Factory. U.S. Sugar also delivers contracted cane to the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida and Florida Crystal’s mills. The Clewiston Re nery is projected to produce 14.4 million hundredweight of re ned sugar (720,000 tons) of re ned sugar. For the 2012-13 crop, U.S. Sugar produced 7.43 million tons of sugarcane, with 6.73 million tons of that processed in Clewiston, producing approximately 770,000 tons of raw sugar and 40 million gallons of molasses. “The United States has become the favorite dumping ground for unneeded, subsidized Mexican sugar—a signi cant portion produced at government-owned factories,” Ms. Sanchez said. “Our farms and factor y can produce sugar more cheaply and more ef ciently than Mexico, but we cannot compete with Mexican government operations that set records for sugar exports this year.” U.S. Sugar’s state-of-the-art sugar milling and re ning operations make its Clewiston Sugar Factory the world’s largest fully integrated and automated cane sugar processing facility. All of the company’s re ned sugar products are marketed by United Sugars, a marketing cooperative that includes U.S. Sugar and beet sugar farmers and processors American Crystal Sugar and Minn-Da k Farmers Cooperative located in Minnesot a and North Dakota. LOWEST PRICE EVERYDAY! 11 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee October 3, 2013 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, has awarded its third contract over the past month to replace two additional water control structures in Herbert Hoover Dike (HHD) as part of the ongoing rehabilitation project for the earthen structure surrounding Lake Okeechobee. The corps awarded the contract Sept. 27 for $36.1 million to Harry Pepper & Associates of Jacksonville. The contract calls for replacement of Culvert 8 (S-268) near Okeechobee along the north side of the lake and Culvert 13 (S-272) near Canal Point in Palm Beach County. The water control structures provide irrigation and drainage to landowners in the area. Work on this project is expected to be complete by the spring of 2017. “This award completes the contract solicitations we planned for scal year 2013,” said Tim Willadsen, Herbert Hoover Dike Rehabilitation Project Manager. “The design and bid packages have been worked for most of the past year. We are now ready to move ahead with the construction of the six structures that were awarded in 2013, and press forward with additional contract work in 2014.” In 2011, the corps began to replace or remove 32 federally-owned water control structures around the dike. With this contract, the corps has taken action to address 16 of the structures. Other risk-reduction measures include installation of a partiall y penetrating cutoff wall between Port Mayaca and Belle Glade, the lling of a quarr y near Pahokee, and removal of vegetation on the dike. The total investment since 2007 is more than $400 million. Herbert Hoover Dike is a 143-mile, earthen levee that surrounds Lake Okeechobee, the second largest freshwater lake in the United States. On Oct. 1, 2013, the “Florida ban on Texting While Driving Law” went into effect, which will help promote safe driving and address critical issues related to distracted driving in the state of Florida. The provisions of the law state that a person may not operate a motor vehicle in motion while manually typing into a wireless communications device known as texting, emailing and instant messaging (non-voice). “AAA applauds Florida for taking steps to save lives,” said Amy Stracke, managing director, AAA Traf c Safety Advocacy, The Auto Club Group. “Too many needless deaths are occurring because of vehicle crashes caused by distracted driving.” To help educate motorists, events are planned and information is being shared across the state during the month of October. This includes participation at high school assemblies, radio public service announcements, collaboration with local law enforcement agencies, and a variety of print messaging and electronic notices along Florida highways and turnpikes. Organizations interested in helping promote the new law can visit their local AAA of ce for information. Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent of driving, at 55 mph, the length of an entire football eld, blind. With more than 6 billion text messages sent each day in the United States, it is important to remind drivers to “Put It Down.” FDOT Secretary Ananth Prasad said, “Distracted driving is a serious danger on our roadways. We’re reminding drivers to be responsible and not text while driving.”Safety Tips: Put the cell phone away or silence it while driving so you are not tempted to respond while in motion. Download an app that disables the device while in motion. Designate a non-driving texter to respond for you. The building of a program, Part II: The Process!By Coach Mike MinikwuCLEAR EYES! FULL HEART! CAN’T LOSE! The Terrier football season has started and it’s on! This year I decided to play some top teams in 3A for our non-district games to help prepare us for our district play and to help with our PROCESS. Some of you may wonder—what process is he talking about. Well, the process is really what you do day in and day out to be successful. We try to de ne the standard that we w ant everybody to work toward, adhere to, and do it on a consistent basis. Building the areas that I stress about before in the prev ious, being responsible for your own selfdetermination, having a positive attitude, having great work ethic, having discipline to be able to execute on a consistent basis, w hatever it is you’re trying to do, those are the things that we try to focus on, and we don’t try to focus as much on the outcomes as we do being all that you can be. I tell our young men to eliminate the clutter and all the things that are going on outside and focus on the things that you can control with how you go about and take care of your business. That’s something that’s ongoing, and it can never change. For example greatest athletes, like Michael Jordan and Mariano Rivera, understand that the “last race doesn’t matter.” They focus on the next game, the next quarter, the next pitch or shot. We as coaches push our Terrier football team much the same way. In our rst team meeting we quickly reminded them that they were not last year’s team and needed to make a mark for themselves. IT IS, AFTER ALL, A PROCESS! After a 0-2 start, your Terriers bounced back and won back-to-back district games bringing their record to 2-2. The terriers won the rst district game versus Imagine School of North Port 67-0. The Terrier defense stood strong all night as they were to provide a couple scores of their own, with Blake Ridgill running back a strip fumble for touchdown and JaVontae Broughton running back a INT for a touchdown. Dominik Spain also provided the Terrier defense with an INT. The defense got back to playing fast and physical and provided the offense with great eld position all night. The Terrier offense got back on track as several Terriers reached the end zone. Terriers who scored offensively were Darrion Cohens, Barrion Cohens, Markeis Hallback, D’Angelo Ware, and JaVontae Broughton with a receiving pass from Bronson Bass. Last Friday night your Terriers traveled to Marco Island to play their second district game of the year and the terriers defeated them 48-0. Once again the Terrier defense was able to pitch another shutout. The Terriers provide big hits all out as Barrion Cohens provide one monster helmet knocking off hit as Marco tried a swing pass in the ats. Toorie Moore and JaVontae Broughton provided the Terriers with 2 INT on the night. Bronson Bass threw three touchdowns passes on the night, two to JaVontae Broughton and the other to Dominik Spain. Markeis Hallback, Barrion Cohens, and D’Angelo Ware all had rushing touching. This week the terriers take on rival ECS at Joe Brown Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. So come out and watch your Terriers. CLEAR EYES! FULL HEARTS! CAN’T LOSE!
