Priming the PumpBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchThere’s an old story from the days of the Great Depression about an outof-work and down on his luck drifter who got lost in the desert. There was no rain, and everything around him was parched and dry. He began to fear that he would soon die, when he suddenly came upon an old pump, holding the promise of drinking water, life, and renewal. Attached to the pump was an old baking powder can. He opened the can and found a folded note inside, protected from the harsh desert environment. The note said, “This pump works good as of June 1932. I put a new washer into it and it ought to last ve years. But the washer dries up and the pump has got to be primed. Under the white rock I buried a bottle of water. There’s enough water in it to prime the pump, but not if ya drink some rst. Pour out about one fourth and let ‘er soak to wet the leather washer. Then pour in the rest medium fast and pump like crazy. You all will git water. The well has never run dry. Have faith. When ya get yerself all watered up, ll the bottle back up and and put ‘er back like you found it for the next feller.” (signed) Desert Pete P.S. “Don’t go drinking up the water rst. Prime the pump with it and you’ll get all you can hold.” How is it possible to move from what we are to what we might become? Faith. Faith is the answer. Faith is like Desert Pete’s pump that needs to be primed before it brings forth the life giving water. Sometimes we’ve got to pump real hard to get the water owing. That’s faith, and faith isn’t always easy. In a world that wants black and white answers, meals in a minute, instant grati cation, and reward without labor, faith is hard work. Faith says take up a cross. Faith says trust God not gold. Faith says the well-worn path is not usually the best path. Faith says there’s no such thing as impossible. Faith says someone who doesn’t look anything like you is still your brother, your sister, and God’s child. It’s hard work priming the pump with faith, but the result is water that ows and ows and glori es God. In John 4:4, we read about Jesus and the woman at the well and some of the blessings of “Living Water.” What Jesus did for the woman at the well, He can do for us! Some of us need to hear that today. Some of us need to hear that God can x what’s broken, heal what’s wounded, resuscitate what has died or dried up. We need to hear it and believe it and begin pumping like crazy. We need renewed faith, but we also need to do something with the faith we already have. Think back to that story about Desert Pete. Think of that note he left. Think of the water he buried. Think of how he made it possible for water to ow in the desert. We need to do the same. Many of us have tasted the water and been blessed with its refreshing and life-bringing properties. We’ve experienced the joy and hope it brings. But it doesn’t just belong to us. The water is for all who thirst, and we need to share it so that those who come behind us can prime their pumps as well. The new three-year contract, which is effective immediately, was approved by IAMAW members on Feb. 22. Terms of the contract included healthcare, life insurance and retirement bene ts, a two percent wage increase in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and a six percent annual bonus payment, both industry standards. This compares with the national average that has increased 2.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.72/g. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 11.3 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 44.9 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 42.0 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 9.1 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. “The streak is over,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “GasBuddy data showed the national average rising for 32 consecutive daysstarting January 20 at $3.265/gal, and ending February 21 at $3.733/ gal. “The tide has now turned and the national average has dropped two days straight. This is certainly excellent news for disillusioned motoristsbut I would caution them not to get overly thrilled as prices may linger near these levels for some time,” DeHaan said. The Corps has been engaged in projects since 2007 to address concerns w ith the dike's integrity. "The results of the Dam Safety Modi cation Study will be used to de ne the nish line for this major project," said Tim Willadsen, Herbert Hoover Dike Rehabilitation Project Manager. WEST PALM BEACH — The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is moving forward with its comprehensive land assessment by beginning an evaluation of agency lands in the Kissimmee/Okeechobee Assessment Region, which includes the Upper and Lower Kissimmee basins and the Lake Okeechobee watershed. The Kissimmee/Okeechobee region is the second of ve geographic areas that are being reviewed in the ongoing assessment of approximately 750,000 acres of fee-owned lands — properties in which the District has full ownership rights. As part of a broader effort to maximize its resources to meet mission-critical responsibilities, the District is conducting the assessment to ensure that each parcel the agency owns is being put to its most effective use. To ensure all relevant information is available for a thorough analysis, the District is seeking public feedback on the use of its lands within the Kissimmee/Okeechobee region. Stakeholders and the general public can examine detailed land portfolios and submit comments on speci c properties through March 18 by visiting www.sfwmd. gov/landassessment. In addition, public workshops have been scheduled at the SFWMD Okeechobee Service Center on March 8 and at the SFWMD St. Cloud Field Station on March 12.Upper Lakes Assessment RegionAt the same time as the public comment period for the Kissimmee/Okeechobee region, District staff will be reviewing feedback received on lands in the Upper Lakes region, which includes parts of Orange, Osceola and Polk counties. The District accepted more than 450 public comments through its website on four project areas in the region, as well as additional input during a public workshop on Feb. 12 in St. Cloud. The District is analyzing these public comments plus input from SFWMD subject matter experts and a variety of land-related data to develop recommendations for each parcel in the Upper Lakes region. Current land uses will remain in place for parcels that are determined to contribute fully to the agency’s core mission of balancing and improving ood control, water quality, natural systems and water supply. To provide the most bene t to taxpayers and South Florida’s water resources, lands that do not directly support the core mission may be considered for alternative uses or possible surplus. Draft recommendations for the Upper Lakes region will be presented at a second regional workshop and during public meetings of the Water Resources Advisory Commission (WRAC) and the Governing Board’s Project and Lands Committee. Final recommendations for the region will be submitted to the full Governing Board for approval at its April meeting. The Kissimmee/Okeechobee region will follow a similar process after the public comment period for the region is complete. The District-wide land assessment for all fee-owned lands is scheduled for completion by mid-2013. A review of approximatel y 700,000 acres of non-fee-owned lands is planned to begin in late 2013. Reassessments of District lands will be conducted as needed, potentially every three to ve years. For more information on the SFWMD land assessment process or to submit comments on lands in the Kissimmee/Okeechobee region, visit www.sfwmd.gov/landassessment. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 11 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 28, 2013 Special to the Glades County DemocratSunshine State ScholarCongratulations to Mattie Ladd Bass (right), a 16-year-old junior at Moore Haven High School. She was selected as the Glades County Sunshine State Scholar. She is the daughter of Ladd and Renee Bass of Venus Florida. ( Mattie pictured above with Principal George Coates.) The Sunshine State Scholars program originated in Florida in 1997 as a math and science competition. The program was founded by Dr. William Caldwell of the University of North Florida and brought together 12th grade students from throughout the state to compete in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Many of these students did not remain in Florida for their post secondary education, so in 2010 the Florida Education Foundation (the Foundation) resolved to stop the ow of intellectual talent from the Sunshine State. The Foundation changed the focus of the Sunshine State Scholars program and asked each of the state's 67 school districts to identify their top 11th grade student in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Tell us what you think about freshwater bass regulations. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) freshwater sheries biologists are looking for angler input during a series of open houses to be held around the state. "This is an opportunity for anglers to provide their thoughts and ideas about Florida largemouth bass regulations. Should they stay the same? Should changes be made? You tell us," said Allen Martin, regional freshwater sheries biologist for the FWC. Open houses will be available for the public to come in, talk to biologists and let FWC staff know what they think. "Anglers are welcome to come into the open houses at any point. There's no set schedule. You can come in for 10 minutes or stay for an hour," Martin said. "The open house format is casual and for angler input about bass regulations only. We want people to let us know what they think." The scheduled open houses are from 5-8 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Here are the locations and dates: Feb. 28 Lake Placid, H.L. Bishop Park, 10 Lake June Clubhouse Road. March 1-3 Tampa, Florida State Fairgrounds, 4800 N U.S. Highway 301. This will be done at the FWC booth during the fair. FWC staff will be available all hours of the show. March 11 Okeechobee, C. Scott Driver Park, 3950 SW 99th Drive. BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonSixty-two checklists have been submitted online at www.BirdCount.org for the Feb. 15 through 18 Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) for Glades, Hendry, and Okeechobee County. Over 138 species with over 188,000 individual birds were reported for these three inland counties. The deadline for entering additional tallies is March 1st. One common resident bird observed during the GBBC was the American Crow. These birds breed throughout most of Florida. The American Crow is a large, intelligent bird with long black legs and a heavy black straight bill. It has broad rounded wings with wingtip feathers that spread like ngers. Its short tail is rounded or squared off at the end. These birds have more than 20 calls, with the most common being a harsh "caw." Immature American Crows give a higher-pitched nasal call similar to the call of a Fish Crow. One of the American Crow call's is the loud "mobbing alert" when they work together to harass or drive off predators. The oldest known wild American Crow lived to be 16 years old and one captive Crow lived to be 59 years old. These clever birds sometimes make and use tools. They will shape a piece of wood and stick it in a hole in a fence post in search of food or break of pieces of pine cone to drop on tree climbers near a nest. They are often found in or around wooded areas in rural and urban areas. These birds will eat almost anything and are often seen feeding on the ground. Their diet can include insects, small animals, seeds, fruit, garbage, carrion, and chicks that they rob from nests. The breeding pair will build a nest of mediumsized twigs, usually in the crotch near the trunk of a tree, or on a horizontal branch normally in the top one third or quarter of a tree. The average clutch of four eggs is laid between mid-February to mid-April. The male and female will both help incubate the eggs for 18 days with the young edging at 28 to 35 days of age.
