Tobacco products like chew, dip and snuff are not harmless. But because they’re smokeless, youth and adults may underestimate the serious health risks associated with these products. In fact, while cigarette use continues to decline, smokeless tobacco use has remained steady among Glades youth for more than a decade. To help raise awareness about the dangers of smokeless tobacco, Glades Students Working Against Tobacco, Glades Tobacco Free Partnership and the Florida Department o f Health’s Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida will observe ‘Through With Chew’ Week from Feb. 17-23. ‘Through With Chew’: Smokless does not mean harmlessSee CHEW — Page 11 Special to the Glades Country Democrat The Hendry Glades Community Health Fair will be held on Sunday, March 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hendry Regional Medical Center in Clewiston. Each year the Hendr y Glades Community Health Fair has had over 500 area residents taking advantage of the many services offered. Services offered include anemia screening, tobacco cessation, vision testing, mammogram vouchers, blood pressure, bone density, cholesterol screening, diabetes screening, HI V screening and education, safety helmets and much more. Many agencies will have tables under the tent to do some testing, answer questions, and hand out valuable educational materials. In addition to the services and vendors, members of the Lions Club will cook and free food will be available to residents who take advantage of the services offered. They will have a bounce house for the children as well as a snow cone and popcorn machine. Local radio station WAFC will broadcast live from the event. Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have risen 15.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.79/g on Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 8,237 gas outlets in Florida. This compares with the national average that has increased 11.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.68/g. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 13.1 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 38.3 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 42.2 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 16.7 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. “The steady climb of retail gas prices is likely to continue following double-digit increases in wholesale prices with fuel production tightening in the majority of the country’s re neries,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Gregg Laskoski. “Los Angeles has climbed to $4.28 per gallon with a 55-cent average price increase in the past month, and that rate was surpassed in Chicago ($4.09 average price) and Detroit ($3.86 per gallon average), where motorists saw 63and 64cent respective increases over the same period. New York crossed the $4 threshhold too.” When it comes to Tobacco, smokeless does not mean harmless. Tobacco products like chew, dip and snuff are not harmless. However, because they’re smokeless, youth and adults may underestimate the serious health risks associated with these products. In fact, while cigarette use continues to decline, smokeless tobacco use has remained steady among Hendry’s youth for more than a decade. To help raise awareness about the dangers of smokeless tobacco, Hendry Students Working Against Tobacco, Hendry Tobacco Free Partnership and the Florida Department of Health’s Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida will observe Through with Chew Week from Feb. 17 to 23. In observance of Through with Chew Week, school SWAT programs will provide educational sessions to their peers with daily tidbits on the Dangers of Tobacco use, focusing on candy avored and smokeless tobacco. A Tobacco Prevention Specialist, along with two members of S WAT, will be live on WAFC for Great American Spit Out on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 8 a.m. The culmination for Through with Chew Week will be on Feb. 23, with SWAT and HTFP participating in the Annual Swamp Cabbage Festival in LaBelle. SWAT and HTFP will have a oat in the annual parade which will provide a visual on the dangers of candy avoured tobacco with a focus on smokeless tobacco. During the event youth will hand out palm cards with information on tobacco use and upcoming tobacco cessation classes. “Youth and young adults may think that smokeless tobacco is safer than cigarettes because it comes in sweet avors such as cherry, strawberry and grape,” stated Xiamora Rangel, SWAT member at Clewiston High School. “The truth is that smokeless tobacco contains 28 cancer causing chemicals, and a 30 minute chew has the same amount of nicotine as three to four cigarettes.” Martina Marquez, SWAT Vice President at LaBelle High School stated, “Flavored tobacco products are widely considered to be starter products, establishing a pattern of tobacco use that can lead to addiction.”Health RisksConstant exposure to tobacco juices from these smokeless products can cause oral cancers, which can form within just ve years of regular use and can cause cancer of the esophagus, pharynx, larynx, stomach and pancreas. Smokeless tobacco use can increase the risk of oral cancers by 80 percent and the risk of pancreatic and esophageal cancer by 60 percent, according to a 2008 study from the World Health Organization (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer. Aside from the increased risk of cancer, using smokeless tobacco can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. It can lead to other oral problems such as mouth sores, gum recession, tooth decay, and permanent discoloration of teeth. Smokeless tobacco use can also increase the risk of reproductive health problems such as reduced sperm count and abnormal sperm cells for men. Women who use smokeless tobacco may be at an increased risk of preeclampsia (a condition that may include high blood pressure, uid retention, and swelling), premature birth, and low birth weight. AddictionLike cigarettes, smokeless tobacco products contain nicotine, a highly addictive and dangerous chemical. Smokeless tobacco users and cigarette smokers have comparable levels of nicotine in the blood, according to the National Cancer Institute. “Some youth may mistakenly believe that when they start smoking or use any tobacco product, they are able to quit very easily,” said State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong. “This type of addiction is very hard to break, and the health risks are extremely high for any tobacco product.” Tobacco Free Florida has three ways to help smokeless tobacco users quit. Those who want to quit can double their chances at success by using one of these free and convenient quit services. For more information, visit www.tobaccofree orida.com. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 4 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 21, 2013 BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonIn February the Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) was added to the Of cial American Birding Association (ABA) Checklist. This action by the ABA Checklist Committee raises the number of species on the Of cial ABA Checklist to 977. The range of the introduced Purple Swamphen is limited in the United States to Southern Florida, but they could spread rapidly to other areas of the state. Purple Swamphen are an established non-native bird that is believed to have been accidently released in 1992 after Hurricane Andrew. Information about the Purple Swamphen is found on the University of Florida IFAS Extension's website at: http://edis.ifas.u edu. This member of the rail, gallinule and coot family is larger than Florida's native Purple Gallinule. Purple Gallinule and Purple Swamphen both have blue/purple bodies and green wings. Purple Gallinules have yellow legs, pale blue foreheads, and a red beak with a yellow tip, while Purple Swamphen has scarlet or blood red legs and foreheads. Swamphen have a very large triangular red bill. Female Purple Swamphens are similar to the male, but are slightly smaller and have a smaller frontal shield. Juvenile Purple Swamphens are duller and paler than the adults. Hatchlings are little black or brown uff balls. The most common Purple Swamphen call is a loud, high-pitched "creek." Purple Swamphens are aggressive territorial birds who could compete with native species for habitat and food. They live in a wide variety of constructed and natural wetlands, wet prairies, canal edges, and marshes. According to research they are primarily vegetarians, but they have been observed eating mollusks, sh, frogs, lizards, snakes, bird eggs, and small birds. In the spring and summer these birds are found in communal groups made up of several breeding males and females and non-breeding "helpers" who share the duties of building the nest, incubating the eggs and caring for the chicks. The breeding females in this group may share a shallow bowl-shaped nest built on a platform made of vegetation. A canopy using some of the surrounding vegetation might be built to cover the nest. Each breeding female can lay two to seven eggs in the communal nest. The chicks hatch in 23-27 days and are able to leave the nest soon after they are born, but may remain near the nest in order to beg their parents for food. Purple Swamphen are reported year round and are breeding at various locations south of Lake Okeechobee including Stormwater Treatment Area ve (STA5). During the past ve years the STA5-Clewiston (FLSO) Christmas Bird Count has reported more Purple Swamphens than any other counts in the United States. Join birders and photographers in their quest for Purple Swamphens and other species found in at STA5 on March 2. Reservations are required for the trips lead by Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers. Send an e-mail to Margaret England at sta5birding@embarqmail.com or call 863674-0695 or 863-517-0202. Include your name and contact information including an emergency cell number, the date you want to attend the STA5 trip, and the number of participants in your party. Meet at the east end of Deer Fence Canal Road at 8:30 a.m. For a schedule of STA5 trips through January 4, 2014 visit the HGAS website at: www.hendrygladesaudubon.org. Special to the Glades County Democrat “I never saw such unique centerpieces!” “This event gets better every year!” These were just a couple of the comments overheard at the Glades County Woman’s Club’s annual Spring Bling Fashion Show and Luncheon, held again this year at M RV Resort. Big Mama and potato soup, salads, sandwiches and desserts of every type from “nanner puddin” to red velvet cake, were all homemade and donated by members of the club to fund the scholarships they award to Glades County’s graduating seniors. The tables featured beautiful purses & slippers attached to vases with jewelry dangling from each arrangement. Awww, you’d have to see it to believe it—you shoulda been there. Mark your calendar for next year. Assisting w ith the serving were graduating seniors Diannia Hallback, Nila Seales and Ashleigh A ndrews, who are working on their community service hours—a requirement to graduate. Guests were welcomed in a program listing Top Ten Things Only Women Understand: 10. Why it’s good to have ve pairs of black shoes. 9. The difference between cream, ivory and off-white. 8. Crying can be fun. 7. Fat clothes. 6. A salad, a drink and hot fudge sundae make a balanced lunch. 5. Discovering a designer dress on the clearance rack can be considered a peak life experience. 4. The inaccuracy of every bathroom scale ever made. 3. A good man might be hard to nd, but a good hairdresser is next to impossible! 2. Why a phone call between two women never lasts under ten minutes. And, the number ONE thing only women understand—other women! Members contributed baskets containing items from barbecue grills to household items, and an original painting for a raf e. Winners are too numerous to list. The culmination for Through With Chew Week will be on Feb. 23, with West Glades SWAT working alongside Hendry SWAT and HTFP participating in the Annual Swamp Cabbage Festival in LaBelle. The group will have a oat in the annual parade which will provide a visual on the dangers of candy avored tobacco with a focus on smokeless tobacco. During the event, youth will hand out palm cards with information on tobacco use and upcoming tobacco cessation classes. "As a member of S WAT, I think our club is a very important in uence on people. It helps students, kids, and adults know what the consequences of tobacco are. By being and knowing about SWAT you have a heads up about tobacco and its dangers so you can w arn people about them. So to me and to a lot of other people, SWAT is very meaningful. It also helps a lot of people know about bad things around them in their daily lives. That's why SWAT is so important; it's good for the community and for all of the people around us." stated Carina Castano, 7th grade SWAT student at West Glades School. "The truth is that smokeless tobacco contains 28 cancer causing chemicals, and a 30-minute chew has the same amount of nicotine as 3 to 4 cigarettes." Flavored tobacco products are widely considered to be starter products, establishing a pattern of tobacco use that can lead to addiction."Health RisksConstant exposure to tobacco juices from these smokeless products can cause oral cancers, which can form within just ve years of regular use, and can cause cancer of the esophagus, pharynx, larynx, stomach and pancreas. "Some youth may mistakenly believe that when they start smoking or use any tobacco product, they are able to quit very easily," said State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong. "This type of addiction is very hard to break, and the health risks are extremely high for any tobacco product." Tobacco Free Florida has three ways to help smokeless tobacco users quit. Those who want to quit can double their chances at success by using one of these free and convenient quit services. For more information, visit www.tobaccofree orida.com. Through With the Chew WeekThis national annual health observance was established by the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery as an educational campaign designed to prevent and reduce the use of smokeless tobacco. Through With Chew Week is now recognized by public health groups across the country. The week includes the Great American Spit Out on Thursday, Feb. 21, which encourages smokeless tobacco users to plan in advance to quit using smokeless tobacco that day, or to use the day to make a plan to quit.Tobacco Free FloridaDOH's Tobacco Free Florida campaign is a statewide cessation and prevention campaign funded by Florida's tobacco settlement fund.
