That compared to 480 who collected bene ts in September, and 518 who collected bene ts in October, 2011. County jobless rate declines By Charles M. MurphySpecial to the Glades Democrat Robert Davis set the alltime Hillsborough County career rushing record as he ran for 230 yards and a touchdown to lead Carrollwood Day High School to a 24-12 victory over Moore Haven in the Class 2A Regional semi nal in Tampa on Friday night. Quarterback Vidal Woodruff scored on two short runs in the fourth quarter as the Patriots (10-1) advanced to play First Baptist of Naples in the regional nal. Moore Haven nishes the season at (9-2). Woodruff, a senior, said another key to the win for Carrollwood was the way they adapted to the Terriers speed. "Moore Haven played well. We looked for their speed and adapted to it. They had great coaching and great kids," he added. It was a nip and tuck defensive battle in the rst hal f as the Terrier defense held the high-powered Patriot offense to six points, forced them to punt three times, and held them to just two third-down conversions in seven attempts. The Patriots only score came after an interception by Woodruff that gave them a rst down at the Terrier 16yard line. Davis scored on a ve-yard burst up the middle ve plays later to make it 6-0. Moore Haven had 151 yards in offense in the rst half and had a great opening drive which ended with a fumble in the Patriot red zone. By Barbara BrownSpecial to the Glades County Democrat “Just because we live in a rural county does not mean that we don’t have the same crimes that larger communities do,” said Glades County Sheriff’s Of ce Sgt. David Hardin at a Keenagers meeting. Following a covered dish luncheon, Sgt. Hardin gave an interesting and very well received presentation on what the “over-50 YOA” group can do to help protect themselves from predatory criminals. Quoting from “Burglary Statistics,” he informed the group that 62.4% of residential burglaries took place during the day. A surprising fact is that a burglary takes place in the U.S. every 14.6 seconds. Use your calculator and see how many that amounts to in the period of a 24-hour day! He emphasized that if you have an alarm system, be sure it is turned on—even if you are leaving the house for a short time. In 41 percent of alarmed homes that were burglarized, the security system WAS NOT TURNED ON, and many of the burglaries occurred through unlocked doors. Statistics show that if burglars go to a block and nd three houses with alarm systems, and three without, you can guess which houses they will hit. Even a burglar alarm noti cation sign is often enough to send the burglar to his next victim. He instructed the group to keep doors and windows locked, especially rear and sliding doors which usually are out of plain view. A burglar will usually spend no more than ONE MINUTE to break in a home—don’t do the burglar’s job for him by giving him easy access to your home! Never hide a key outside your house, Sgt. Hardin said, as the rst place anyone looks is under a ower pot, a rug or over a door frame—including the burglar. When travelling, be sure to use timers to turn lights on and off at night, and don’t allow mail or newspapers to accumulate. Give the appearance that someone is constantly at home, and ask trusted neighbors to keep an eye on your home till your return. A Home Safety Screening Quiz revealed things that we all do and how to correct them, not only to keep safe, but also to help emergency response personnel locate your house. Sgt. Hardin informed the group that many pet doors are large enough for a child or small adult to crawl through and unlock a door. To protect your identity, destroy junk mail before discarding it. He said that a person should have at least one telephone, such as a cell phone, that can be operated without a “land line,” as many times a burglar will cut the wires to a landline. Sgt. Hardin also gave the Keenagers a Holiday Safety Screening quiz. They learned to take a friend or family member with them when shopping at night; use a credit or debit card and not carry large sums of cash; place packages out of sight in the trunk of the car; and shield your PIN number when using an ATM machine. At home during the holidays, keep the Christmas tree and presents out of the regular passageways, and keep gift-wrapped packages out of sight of windows or doors. Many in the group knew of instances where a Christmas was spoiled by a burglar stealing all the gifts! Check the identi cation of all persons delivering packages to your home. This is an easy way for a potential burglar to see what is in your home that he’d like to have. A question and answer session followed Sgt. Hardin’s presentation, and Keenagers learned to make a copy of all important cards, i.e., credit, debit, healthcare, and keep in a safe place where a family member can nd it. NEVER carry your Social Security card in your billfold— memorize the number, and leave the card at home. Instead of signing the back on a credit/debit card write “check ID”. The Keenagers presented Sgt. Hardin with a huge hand painted mug, in appreciation for such an interesting and informative program. He also noted that the Glades County Sheriff’s of ce has a number of programs that are very informative, such as one he will be presenting on hand gun permits. Contact the sheriff’s of ce to see if there is a program to meet your needs. The December meeting of Keenagers will feature, soup & sandwiches for the meal, and Christmas carols and a Chinese Auction for the program. Presents must be “re-gifts” or a $5 limit on purchased presents. Keenagers is open to anyone 50 YOA or older, meets on the third Thursday of the month, and usually meets in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church. Hope to see you there next month! Okeechobee stood at seventh place among Florida Counties and Glades stood at 17th highest. Around the area Highlands County had 8.7 percent, St. Lucie 10.9 percent, Osceola 8.9 percent, Martin 9 percent and Palm Beach County 8.6 percent. JOBSContinued From Page 1 loose for a 28-yard run on the second play from scrimmage and Vinton Lewis caught a 12-yard pass on the drive. The Terriers stunned the Patriots late in the half to tie the score. JaVonte Broughton made a spectacular one-handed running catch on a deep post pattern at mid eld and outran the defense for a 78-yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked. Davis rushed for 137 yards in the second half as the Patriots began to control play and the clock. Their defense also became tougher as Moore Haven could only manage 42 y ards in offense in the second half. Davis broke loose for a 35-yard run in the third quarter to set up a 31-yard eld goal by Stephen Yaffe to make it (9-6). Late in the fourth Carrollwood drove 48 y ards in eight plays to go up 16-6. Key plays included runs of 15 and 14 yards by Davis. W oodruff carried over for a two-yard touchdown on second and goal to put the Patriots up by 10. Forced to go for it inside their own 20 on the next drive, Carrollwood held and took over on the Terrier 15. Woodruff scored again, three plays later on a quarterback sneak and a two-point conversion put the Patriots up 24-6. Moore Haven responded with a 36-yard kick return and drove 37 yards in ve plays as Josh Redd raced in for a 10-yard touchdown to nish out the scoring. Terrier Coach Mike Minikwu said his rst year as coach at his alma mater was great as the Terriers elded only their second team to nish (9-1) in the regular year. “I hoped it would end a little differently. We had a couple of opportunities but they slipped by tonight,” he added. He said his defense appeared to get tired late in the game. He said Davis was a good running back but that his defense did a good job. “We had some great kids who showed a lot of improvement this year. We don’t like to lose. We play hard until the end of games,” he explained. Minikwu said the future of Moore Haven football looks bright as they return a number of players. They do lose some key seniors and he will try to nd new leadership for the team next year. “We plan to make another playoff appearance next year. We started to work hard in the spring and we wanted to be a physical team on both sides of the ball,” he added. Markeis Hallback, Charlie Ford, Cohens, Akkua Hallback, Felipe Morales, Rickey Curry, and several others had strong games for the Terriers on defense. BALLContinued From Page 1 Automobile travel remains the dominant mode of transportation for Thanksgiving travel plans. Approximately 90 percent of all travelers, or 39.1 million people, plan to drive to their destinations. AAA reminds drivers to utilize safety precautions and recognize “Move Over” laws in their respective state. This will help protect everyone on the roadways from stranded motorists to emergency response vehicles. It is critical to have an action plan if you become stranded in oncoming traf c as result of a car crash or vehicle breakdown. A n estimated 7,630 people died in motor v ehicle related fatalities in the rst quarter of 2012. That represents a 13.5 percent increase from the same time period in 2011, according to the National Highway of Traf c Safety Administration. “When you are stranded on the roadside in oncoming traf c, some practices are safer than others,” said Gerry Gutowski, Sr. Vice President, Automotive Services, The Auto Club Group. “Regardless of if you are in a car crash or your car breaks down while you are driving, there are important actions you can take to help protect you and other occupants in your vehicle.” Since every situation is unique, it is dif cult to advise people to be safe in every scenario when they are in the path of oncoming traf c. AAA recommends stranded motorists call law enforcement immediately if they feel unsafe and are concerned other motorists may not see them. “Everyone should pay attention and keep their eyes on the road to make sure they can respond quickly if they come upon a disabled vehicle,” said Gutowski. Motorists stranded on the roadside should always take extra precautions to make sure everyone in their vehicle is safe, including: 1. Pull off to the right side of the road. Try to pull over onto the shoulder where you are NOT in danger of getting struck by traf c. 2. Turn on your hazard lights. Make certain your vehicle is visible to other drivers by turning on your vehicle’s emergency ashers. If your lights do not work, exit the vehicle. 3. Exit your vehicle opposite the side of oncoming traf c. If you exit your vehicle, wait as far away from it and traf c as possible. Try to stand on a sidewalk or behind a guardrail. 4.
