I am an 18 year resident of Glades County, my wife Shannon and I have three children who all currently attend Glades County Schools. I taught biological science classes at Moore Haven Jr.-Sr. High School for nine years and was also a student club sponsor, athletic coach and site coordinator for after school programs. In 2003 I obtained a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from FGCU. The past nine years I have been the Director of Administrative Services for the GCSD; this position serves as the assistant superintendent. The experience I have gained in my current position has provided me the knowledge base I will need to guide our school district so that our students will receive the best possible educational opportunities. I feel that I am the best candidate for this position; I have worked for the past nine years in the day-to-day operation of our school district. I am knowledgeable of Florida school laws, the federal and state regulations and mandates that we must adhere to, and the functions of the school budget per Florida statutes. If I am fortunate enough to be elected as your school superintendent, I will take a proactive approach in overseeing the operation of the district, promote Scott Bass is director of administrative services Special to the Glades County DemocratScott Bass Brown and Bass vie for Superintentent of Schools See BROWN — Page 11 See BASS — Page 11 More local elections news ... The Morrill Act established the land-grant university system and essentially initiated what could be de ned as "The Education Revolution" that thrives to this day. July 2 is the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Morrill Act, which created the land grant university system, of which the University of Florida is a part. This public investment in higher education has made a signi cant difference in the quality of life for Floridians. Not only did it allow for the education of those who previously had little access to higher learning, but it created a system in which university faculty and researchers share their knowledge and discoveries with the public for the betterment of Florida's communities and economy. When President Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Act in July 1862, he demonstrated remarkable foresight, particularly considering the country was in the midst of the Civil War. Lincoln realized the importance of higher education and made Representative Justin Morrill's dream a reality. The passage of the Morrill Act in 1862 provided thousands of Americans access to knowledge and a teaching environment they most likely never would have experienced. That cause was furthered by the Second Morrill Act in 1890, which provided funding to institutions for African American students. A century and a half later, America's 74 landgrant universities continue to connect students with the nest faculty and resources the country has to offer. The University of Florida is proud to be a leading member of that group. UF offers more than 100 undergraduate degrees and more than 200 graduate degrees. Our accessibility can also be measured in our affordability. This year marks the seventh year in a row that the University of Florida was named the second-best value in public colleges in the U.S. by Kiplinger's Personal Finance. One of only six universities in the country with colleges of law, medicine, agriculture, and veterinary medicine on one central campus, as well as undergraduate and graduate degrees available via distance and online learning, the University of Florida exempli es the vision of the Morrill Act. UF is also one of only 17 universities in the country to share the distinction of land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant status. Throughout its history as a land-grant university, UF has achieved a great number of successes while ful lling a mission to teach, research, and provide service. The quality of our education has produced multiple Nobel Prize winners, as well as U.S. senators, U.S. representatives, state governors, U.S. ambassadors, college presidents, and countless leaders of major companies and institutions, from MTV to the United States Marine Corps. Research has resulted in breakthrough products that have changed the playing eld. In one case, quite literally: Gatorade. Further evidence is the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/ IFAS), which has earned the No. 1 ranking in Agricultural R&D from the National Science Foundation. With nearly 300 different crops produced throughout the state, Florida -the nation's leader in that category -faces a more diverse set of challenges. UF/IFAS has risen to the occasion and embarked on research initiatives to meet those challenges. Dedicated to developing knowledge in agriculture, human and natural resources, and the life sciences, UF/IFAS is also charged with the responsibility of making that information accessible throughout the state. To that end, each of Florida's 67 counties is served by a dedicated UF/IFAS of ce. This was made possible by the 1914 Smith-Lever Act that provided federal support for land-grant institutions to offer educational programs through cooperative extension efforts. For a century and a half, in thousands of ways, big and small, the University of Florida has helped make Florida a great place to live, work, and play through its core mission of teaching, research, and outreach. It has played a vital role in helping the United States produce the safest and most plentiful food supply on earth. As we move into a period of continued budget cuts and expectations to do more with less, please help spread the word about UF/IFAS Extension, 4-H, the services that are provided, and the great people that work at UF. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 5 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee July 5, 2012 Lightning deaths occur more frequently in the summerBY PAT DOBBINS Hendry/Glades Health DepartmentsMillions of lightning ashes happen each year and lightning can claim one or two victims at a time. Lightning strikes do not usually cause mass destruction of property, so it may not be considered as a "high-risk" to some people. However, lightning has killed over almost 100 people in the last few years. Did you know that lightning can strike as far as ten miles from the area where it's raining? That's about the same distance that you can hear thunder. So if you can hear the thunder, that means you are within striking distance. Most lightning deaths or injuries happen in the summer. School is out for summer, so take time now to educate your family on lightning safety. "When lightning roars go indoors!" There are some indoor dangers to remember as well. Stay off of corded phones and computers during lightning. If a person is struck by lightning, please call 911 and get medical care immediately. Heart irregularities, cardiac arrest, nerve damage, and burns are common when someone gets struck by lightning. However, with proper treatment, including CPR if necessary, most victims survive a lightning strike. You are in no danger helping a lightning victim. The charge will not affect you. By Charles M. MurphySpecial to the Glades County Democrat State Representative Denise Grimsley said she is looking forward to representing Okeechobee County as part of her Florida Senate District. The representative was able to secure a $5 million grant for a new Emergency Operations Center in Glades County this year. The Glades Commission accepted the grant and began the process of building the new complex on June 14. Ms. Grimsley has worked since 2004 to get the grant to build the EOC. She noted during the storms of 2005 county staff had to stay in the hallways of the 100 year court house and that was simply not safe. “I’m very happy and delighted that Governor Scott chose to approve the EOC. Glades accepts evacuees from both coasts and this building will set them up for times of disaster,” she explained. Gov. Scott had vetoed the item in 2011 but Ms. Grimsley and Senator JD Alexander continued to lobby him and were able to convince him to approve the grant this year. Ms. Grimsley said she thinks the state has done a good job of reducing spending during her career. She did express some disappointment in the Governor’s vetoes of water projects sought by Okeechobee and Glades County this year. Ms. Grimsley grew up in Hardee County and has been part of agriculture for most of her life. She admitted that representing Okeechobee in the Senate would be a natural t. “I’m looking forward to it. For the past few years both Hardee and Okeechobee have continued to grow and bring in more industry,” she admitted. Other projects she will work on include the proposed Heartland Parkway that one day will connect Naples to Orlando with a four-lane highway. The road would alleviate traf c congestion on portions of US 27 in her district and could bring in more industry and development. Possible routes include a segment through Glades County. The Department of Transportation has the project in the ve-year work plan but have only funded environmental studies and survey work at this point and no asphalt or right of way purchase. “I can’t tell you the exact location of the road but there is a possible route through Glades County,” she added. Another road project she will focus on is the widening to four lanes of State Route 70 between Okeechobee and Arcadia. Ms. Grimsley said the house did not debate prison privatization this year. She said the Moore Haven prison is a model for private prisons. She said her goal is to improve ef ciency in state government and private prisons are one way to do that. She will also focus on reduction of regulations and laws that affect small businesses. “Most businesses simply want to be left alone,” she added. The legislature did include $2 million to ght citrus greening and some tax breaks for citrus plants this year. Grimsley said she will support additional tax exemptions for agriculture in the future, if elected to the Senate. Denise Grimsley eager to have Okeechobee in Senate District The Harry Chapin Food Bank will be the recipient of a $125,000 grant for a new 24-foot refrigerated truck through a Mosaic Company Foundation grant. The truck will be used to deliver food to partner agencies and to pick up produce and other food from area growers, packing houses, and retailers. The truck will be of prime importance to underserved areas. The food bank CEO and president, Al Brislain, notes that getting fresh, nutritious food to children in need is a top priority, and Mosaic’s generous support of our efforts is greatly appreciated. The Mosaic Company Foundation is investing $2.79 million in Florida as part of a global launch of the Foundation’s online grant system. Mosaic has awarded grants to Florida organizations implementing initiatives focused on hunger relief, agricultural research and development, water conservation and stewardship, and community enrichment. The Harry Chapin Food Bank solicits, collects and stores quality food for distribution to families in need through a network of nonpro t agencies in Lee, Collier, Hendry, Charlotte and Glades counties, who provide food to more than 30,000 people monthly. Over 1 million pounds of food are distributed monthly. For every dollar donated, about $6 in food value goes back to the community. In the past calendar year, The Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed more than 13.7 million pounds of food and other grocery items valued at more than $22.5 million. This is roughly the equivalent of 11 million meals to people in need. Harry Chapin Food Bank receives $125,00 grant for refrigerated truck Kissimmee lock to closeThe S-65 Navigation Lock at the south end of Lake Kissimmee is scheduled to be closed to boat traf c beginning July 9 for inspection and repairs. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 See Better, Look Better, Feel Better No-Glare Lenses“The Optical Center” at Family Eye Care 100 N. Main Street LaBelle, FL 33935 863-675-0761 7 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee July 5, 2012 BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe Boat-tailed Grackle is a noisy aggressive bird that is found exclusively along the Gulf and Atlantic coast of the United States. Two or possibly three races of this species are found in Florida. The eye colors vary from region to region from dark brown to light yellow. According to the Cornell’s “All about Birds” website, Grackles along the Atlantic coast north of Florida have strawcolored eyes. Florida birds have dark eyes and Grackles west of Florida to eastern Louisiana have light eyes, but those further west have dark ones. Boattailed Grackles live and breed throughout much of Florida. The male is a large iridescent purple black bird with wings and a long tail that are more greenish. The female is one-half the size of the male and has a cinnamon brown back and head with a paler brown breast and belly. Female’s tails and wings are dark brown. Juveniles are brown like the female but have streaked underparts. The Boat-tailed Grackles call is a series of sharp notes and harsh guttural trills with its call made up of sharp “chek” notes and variable piping whistles. Boat-tailed Grackles are communal roosters who are commonly found near fresh water and salt marshes. They are often seen walking on the ground picking up food items, turning over stones with their bills, and sticking their bill into grass or dirt searching for prey in open habitats, urban areas, and agricultural elds. Their diet consists mainly of insects, frogs, fruits, grains, sh, small mammals, and garbage. Nests are often built in reeds, small shrubs, or trees above water, but they will construct nest in palms and other trees. The female builds a nest which is an open cup of grass lined with Spanish moss, wool, leaves, feathers, or other soft materials. She lays two to four eggs which she incubates for 13 days with the young edging when they are 14 to 16 days old. Fledglings that fall into the water can swim for short distances by using their wings as paddles. During the Breeding Bird Atlas 1 Survey 25 years ago, Boat-tailed Grackles were con rmed breeding birds in inland Florida. The Breeding Bird Atlas Survey (2012-2016) is underway. To help document the breeding birds or to participate in a morning survey during July in Hendry or Glades County, contact Margaret England. You are invited to join Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers for free birding trips to STA5 located 20 miles south of Clewiston on Saturday morning July 14 or Aug. 18. Special to the Glades County Democrat Michelle Brunetto is running for Glades County property appraiser. She is running because she feels that with her knowledge and experience she will serve the Glades County residents well. Michelle is a ten-year resident of Glades County and an of cer at First Bank. She is also president of Rotary Club of LaBelle. Michelle has almost 30 years of evaluating, reviewing and appraising properties for their fair market value. In mortgage lending, it is an integral part of the lending process, and appraisals cross her desk on a daily basis. Michelle graduated from the Society of Real Estate Appraisers course at St. Thomas University. This course is transferable as one of the major courses required to become certi ed for Glades County property appraiser She also conducted appraisals which include searching for comparables, on site inspections and market trend analysis. Michelle quotes, "The main function of the property appraiser is to value properties for their fair market value." Fair market value is what a seller will sell for and what a buyer will pay for a property, both being knowledgeable and not under duress. She has the knowledge and experience to do that. Michelle has management experience in large and small companies and has strengthened this skill by completing accounting, business law, and many management courses. Michelle noted that the Computer Assisted Mass Appraisal program in use now is very helpful, however, to quote from the manual, "the accuracy of the values depends on the reliability of the data from which they are generated." In other words, "garbage in, garbage out." One of the requests Michelle has run across is that the Glades County Property Appraisers web site be updated. She wholeheartedly agrees and she is positioned to work with the technological advancements of the near future. Michelle states, "If you honor me with your vote, I will be honest, fair, straightforward and will not forget that I am there to serve you." My past years have given me a great w ealth of information; a foundation to build upon. I realize that the Glades County Property Appraiser has a huge responsibility. I w ill approach it with determined diligence and learn all I can to ensure you that your appraisals are carefully determined and consistently fair. The Department of Revenue requires that the elected Property Appraiser complete appraisal courses and become certi ed within four years after taking of ce. They must also have at least two years experience working in a County Appraiser's Of ce, Tax Collector's Of ce or with the Department of Revenue. They recognize my experience and that I have already met this requirement. Therefore, I can complete the certi cation process immediately, and do not have to wait two years. My commitment is to have an open door! If you have a problem or question, I will sit down with you and work out a solution. I want you to be con dent that your property appraisals are fair and I want to be sure that you are taking advantage of all your exemptions, so that we can keep your taxes as low as possible. My extensive budgeting and management experience in Glades County Government along with Business Law and Financial Accounting from Indian River State College will enable me to operate my of ce ef ciently, in an effort to save tax dollars. I love working with the residents of Glades County and am con dent in my ability to serve as Property Appraiser. By Eric KoppSpecial to the Glades County Democrat A Moore Haven man was arrested after he reportedly broke into a woman’s home and beat her about the head. Yeidy Velasquez, 20, Avenue F, was arrested June 29 on a felony charge of burglary with an assault or battery and a misdemeanor charge of battery. Velasquez was booked into the Glades County Jail under a $20,000 bond. Jail records show that he was released June 30 on bond. An arrest report by Deputy Richard Ermeri, of the Glades County Sheriff’s Of ce (GCSO), stated that he and GCSO Deputy Sergeant Richard Jones responded to the victim’s home around 10:20 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6. According to the report Velasquez followed another person into the victim’s home, then went into the victim’s bedroom where the attack apparently took place. The man entered the victim’s home without her permission, continued the report. Deputy Ermeri stated that the man jumped onto the victim’s bed and began to hit her about the head. Yeidy struck the woman “... multiple times leaving a knot on her head,” stated the arrest report. A witness reportedly pulled Yeidy off the victim. Yeidy was not located until June 20 when he was arrested by GCSO Deputy Daryl Sherley, who was assisted by fellow deputies Richard Anderson and Victor Alvarez. Deputy Ermeri went on to state that Yeidy had apparently tried to enter the victim’s home several times but had been stopped. The report does not give a reason for the alleged attack. The GCSO arrest report does not indicate if the victim received any medical treatment. By Tim StanleySpecial to the Glades County Democrat Hello, my name is Tim Stanley. I am seeking your vote in the Aug. 14 election for Glades County Commissioner, Buckhead Ridge. I was born in Pompano Beach, Florida in 1958. I was a weekend resident until I graduated from Pompano Beach High School in 1976, at which time I became a permanent resident and attended Indian River Community College. I worked at masonry, carpentry, commercial shing, and farming before I went to work for SFWMD and decided to make it my career and start a family. I have four children Jason, Lara, Josh, Becky /Jesse Kirkland and grandson Porter. I have worked for SFWMD for 34 years. The facility where I work serves Okeechobee, Glades, Martin, and Highlands counties. As a supervisor my duties include managing the physical, scal, and human resources of a remote regional eld facility. Supervise water resource operations including coordination, implementation, reporting, budgeting, and integrating with other district activities. Provide technical and programmatic coordination and interaction with government agencies and the public. I feel my experience will enhance my abilities as commissioner. The reason that I would like to represent you as your commissioner is that our county has progressed very little in the 36 years that I have lived here. I see our children moving away to nd jobs because there are few opportunities here. It is time for us to move forward and create some interest in our county so new business's will desire to come here. We need to promote the great asset we have in Lake Okeechobee and promote tourism so that businesses can survive here. As your commissioner I will listen to your needs and represent you and your requests. I ask for your vote on Aug. 14 so that I can work for you for the next four years. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 16 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee July 5, 2012 By Dennis Grif nSpecial to the Glades County Democrat My name is Dennis Grif n. I am a candidate for district one commissioner. I am married to Beth. We have three children, Nancy, Sera, Jake, and grandson Cayson. I am a third generation Glades County resident. I attend the First Baptist Church of Moore Haven where I teach an Adult Men's Class in Sunday School. I have been involved in Glades Youth Athletics for over 25 years, I currently coach basketball and T-ball. My business has helped sponsor Girls Softball and Boys Baseball at Moore Haven High School. I have served on the Parents Advisory Council, President, Vice-President for Glades County Fish and Game Club. I currently serve on the Glades County Youth Livestock as a director. While growing up I worked at the family business, Uncle Joes Fish Camp, Anglars Marina, Grif n Farms, City of Moore Haven, Bronson Ranch, Arbank Farms, Mutt Thomas Farms, Glades Electric Cooperative, myself (1991) Grif n Electric and Air Conditioning. Over the years I have learned to work with people to get projects completed. The big question is why do I want to be a Commissioner? I have been following the meetings for about three years and been attending the meetings for almost two years. I have started two proposals, new purchase and procurements which I served on a committee, and a sound level ordinance, both are with the county attorney now to be prepared to bring up for approval. If elected to serve I will develop areas so business can locate here and grow our economy. I will bring three things with me if elected, knowledge with experience, sacri ce, and desire. If you want leadership in a positive direction then vote for me. With your help we can make Glades County a thriving county. In closing I would like to thank everyone for their kind words and encouragement. Grif n seeks county commission seat Special to the Glades County DemocratDennis Grif n Stanley in county commission race Special to the Glades County DemocratTim Stanley AAA and Bud Light will help motorists get home safely during the Independence Day weekend with the Tow to Go program. The service provides a con dential local ride and tow home from any bar or restaurant free of chargeby calling 1-800-AAA-HELP (4357). Services are offered throughout Florida, Georgia, and West and Middle Tennessee. Anyone, AAA member or not, can call for a Tow to Go ride, Wednesday, July 4 through Saturday, July 7. The Auto Club Group and Bud Light have provided the Tow to Go service for more than 14 years because it allows AAA to protect the freedom and mobility of everyone on our roadways. The program's mission is to discourage an intoxicated driver from getting behind the wheel and risking the lives and safety of other motorists. Not only does the program remove the intoxicated driver, but it also enables AAA and Bud Light to remind the public during major holiday weekends about the importance of choosing a designated driver or making other plans for a safe ride home. "This program is invaluable because it brings attention to the dangers of drinking and driving beyond just giving an intoxicated driver a safe ride home," said Gerry Gutowski, Sr. Vice President, Automotive Services, The Auto Club Group. Tow to go offered through July 7
