2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 3 OPINION/Glades County Democrat May 17, 2012 What’s your opinion?Editor’s note: Readers are invited to post their comments for this column on the Glades County Democrat web site. Go to orida.newszap.com, and click on “forums” and then on “Glades County” to comment on a current discussion thread or start a new one. You may also leave comments on the Glades County Democrat page on Facebook or email your comments to gcdnews@ newszap.com. Comments on all issues of local interest are welcome. Some of the topics currently under discussion include the following:Online forum Politics and religion have always evoked passionate opinions. But personally, I think this “town forum” serves a purpose in allowing people to openly express an opinion with total frankness, that is, it serves a purpose as long as it doesn’t promote any untruths w hen opinions are stated as though they are facts, when they are not. People tend to be especially passionate in their views on politics, especially local politics. No doubt opinions posted here are passed along to the candidates! Some people criticize others for posting comments anonymously but they of course go online to read those comments. Maybe web prowlers online just reviewing (without commenting) all these opinions w ill dispel the apathy that has kept the voter turnout so low. Maybe people will become interested enough to decide to make their v ote count! That’s the most effective way to post an opinion. And after all, 50 percent plus one vote, winner takes all!Water Management For too long water management has had too much power and too much access to tax money. I was glad when Gov. Scott forced them to cut back on anything that w as not part of their core mission. They w ere throwing away tax money on “feel good” items like pretty picture calendars to give away, and building themselves fancy ofces. They were spending thousands for the board members to y by helicopter to places they could have easily driven. The sad thing is that despite all that money, they did not complete the critical projects like developing more water storage areas north of the lake.Grievances In County Commissioner Storter’s commission notes, the commission chairman states that he was asked by three media sources about the issue of the grievances led against the county administrator, and he said only one correctly reported his response which was “no comment.” I read Eric’s Kopp’s story in the Glades County Democrat, in which it stated he declined to comment. So that is the one that was correct. But what were the other two media sources who did not quote him correctly? I want to see these grievances for myself and make up my own mind about it all, but I don’t want to drive all the way to the courthouse. Are they online somewhere? I can’t nd it on the county web site. Editor’s note: A copy of the portion of the grievances that have been deemed public record can be found on the Glades County Democrat website at www. orida.newszap.com/ gladescounty/. The link for the grievance documents is within the story headlined “Grievances led against Glades County Manager.”School programs This time of year, there are a lot of school programs. Parents want to enjoy these programs and they want to hear and sometimes record the programs for relatives who cannot attend. When you go to one of these special events, please turn off your cell phone. If you are a doctor or some other of cial who must stay in contact with the of ce, put it on vibrate. A ringing cell phone makes it impossible to hear the kids on stage. Please do not talk during the program. If your young child starts fussing, please take them outside until they calm down. Don’t ruin the video others want to send to an elderly grandparent. When your own child is on stage, you want others to be quiet so you can hear him or her. Show the same courtesy to everyone else. And unless it is an emergency, please do not leave until the end of the program. That is just rude.Voting Wake Up voters, do your homework. Take the time check each candidates’ qualications rather than name recognition or a bunch of signs. Don’t cast your vote based on signs and T-shirts. Tips for steering your career in the right direction If you’re a new college or high school graduate, you may have been told by older relatives that the best way to launch your career is to get a decent job and stick with it. But many experts today warn that the expectation of relying on one company to employ you until you retire is no longer realistic. “The traditional path that worked for your grandparents is not necessarily viable anymore,” says Larry Winters, founder and president of Leadership Team Development, Inc., a company that provides business support materials for Amway business owners in North America. As the author of the new book “Live the Dream – No More Excuses,” Winters believes that with the right attitude and a solid plan, you can take control of your nancial destiny. He offers these tips for new graduates inspired to make this commitment: Taking control of your nancial future and career starts when you decide to dive into your opportunity head rst. Be con dent. You can’t win with a mind cluttered with constant doubt. Excuses are easy to make and will only serve to help you avoid doing what’s right. Stop making them! The only real security in today’s economic climate of outsourcing and downsizing is the ability to perform. Gain a practical skill set and become invaluable. Spend time every day reading something to develop your personal growth. Expand your mind with the most positive, optimistic, ethical, inspiring material possible. Surround yourself with people who will help you keep a positive and motivated outlook. Don’t allow friends with a “can’t do” attitude to bring you down. Naysayers are a dime a dozen. The world teaches short-term thinking, but success doesn’t jump up and attack you. True success is a designed, programmed event. Be it the eld of merchandise or medicine, create a plan and follow it. Don’t give up when you fall. Just get back up and move forward. Failures and setbacks are all part of the growing experience. As you make your way into the “real world,” consider harnessing your time, energy and talent into an independent career. It won’t be easy, but success rarely comes without effort – and there’s no better time than when you are strong and full of energy to make it happen. The month-long program, sponsored by the Florida Beef Council, is aimed at building awareness of beef as a highly versatile and affordable commodity. Florida is home to the largest beef cattle ranch in the United States and ranks eleventh in the nation in the number of beef cows. Cash receipts from the sale of cattle in Florida in 2011 reached $502 million, making Florida's beef industry a pro table component of our state's agricultural industry. In addition to the of cial proclamation by Governor Rick Scott designating May as Florida Beef Month, the Florida Beef Council will be working with Leslie Green, The Hungry Housewife, as its exclusive blogger and spokesperson during the campaign. Green will submit weekly recipes and photos, make media appearances and perform cooking demos utilizing Florida Beef, like Filet Mignon with Mushroom Mascarpone Sauce and Asian Beef Salad with Citrus Vinaigrette. "We're so proud and excited to announce the rst ever of cial Florida Beef Month," notes Jim Handley, CEO of the Florida Beef Council. "Our goal is for Florida residents to recognize how relevant beef is to the industry and what beef does for our great state." As part of a partnership, Tampa-based Sweetbay Supermarket will offer beef recipe tastings at select stores to drive beef sales, special summer grilling in-store signage, and underwrite billboards in Tampa and St. Petersburg. The Florida Beef Council will also sponsor an associate-speci c contest to increase beef sales. Florida Beef Council Celebrates May as Florida Beef Month Prepare for Hurricane Season 2012 FSBDC State Of ce: The Florida Small Business Development Center Network (FSBDCN) is pleased to partner with the Florida Division of Emergency Management to help businesses prepare for and understand what a disaster could mean for their business. Critical information will be provided through the partner-assisted training sessions. Hurricane Season 2012 of cially begins June 1 and, although forecasters are predicting an average to below-average season, business owners are strongly urged to prepare for the worst. "The Florida Division of Emergency Management is excited about partnering with the Florida Small Business Development Center to assist small businesses throughout the state with completing a business continuity plan," said Director of Florida Division of Emergency Management, Bryan W. Koon. "As the lifeblood of Florida's communities, it is imperative for small businesses to reopen as quickly as possible following a disaster and advance preparation is the best method for recovery." "The Florida SBDC Network is committed to ensuring Florida small businesses are prepared for all aspects of business," said Jerry Cartwright, State Director of the FSBDCN. "Business continuity must be an important component for every business. In short, we want to ensure they stay open for business in the event of a disaster." As a principal responder in the state's Emergency Support Function (ESF) 18Business & Industry, the FSBDCN is a key economic development organization that supports disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation through its Business Continuity and Risk Management Center (BCRM) program. Initiated in 2006 as part of a congressionallydirected program funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration, the focus of the BCRM is to ensure that Florida businesses have the education, training, and assistance needed to minimize losses and increase survivability when affected by a disaster. FSBDC certi ed consultants statewide are available to help business owners develop a business continuity, emergency preparedness, and recovery plan at no cost. For more than 35 years, the Florida SBDC Network has nourished a statewide partnership between higher education and economic development organizations, dedicated to providing emerging and established business owners with management and technical assistance, enabling overall growth and increased pro tability for the businesses and economic prosperity for the state. To learn more about the Florida SBDC Network or to nd a SBDC near you, visit www.FloridaSBDC.org or call 1-866-737-7232. Florida Partners Help Businesses If you're one of the estimated 25 million Americans who suffer from asthma, you know what it's like to experience symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. To raise awareness and understanding of this serious and growing health problem, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation and Genentech have joined with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) to launch The Asthma Express, an educational awareness program to help bring allergic asthma to the forefront. The program highlights the increasing number of people suffering from the disease and how it affects them. The program encourages people to get screened to help determine if their asthma is uncontrolled and to talk with an asthma specialist about their results and if they should be screened for allergic asthma. The Asthma Express is stopping in selected cities across the U.S., educating people at community health fairs about asthma, allergic asthma and some available testing options. In each city, the educational experience features: Interactive iPad stations where people can learn more about allergic asthma. Free testing options to see if your asthma is uncontrolled and if allergens may play a role in your asthma. A take home educational kit to help people talk with their healthcare provider about the disease. Many things can trigger or worsen asthma symptoms, leading to uncontrolled asthma that may vary and recur over time. Of the different types of asthma, allergic asthma is the most common form affecting approximately 60 percent of all asthma sufferers in the U.S. Allergic asthma is caused by sensitivity to year-round allergens in the air that trigger an allergic reaction that can lead to asthma attacks and symptoms. It is also associated with IgE, a type of antibody responsible for most allergic reactions. Typically your healthcare provider will use a skin or blood test to see if your asthma is caused by allergens in the air. "It is important to understand what could trigger your allergic asthma to help better control your disease," says Dr. Travis Stork, ER doctor and host of the Emmy award-winning talk show "The Doctors." "Many people living with asthma and allergic asthma have triggers. Identifying your triggers can help you work with your doctor to determine the most appropriate course of action. The one thing I always tell patients: Empower yourself.' When it comes to asthma, nd out if your asthma is allergic asthma." BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe Anhinga is sometimes called a Snakebird or Water Turkey. The name is derived from the Brazilian Tupi language which means “devil” or “snake bird.” It is often mistaken for the Double-crested Cormorant. The Anhinga has a very long neck and often swims with just its neck above water. Its tail is longer than a Cormorant’s and it has a long thin pointed bill while the Cormorant’s bill has a hook-tip. The male Anhinga has a mostly black green body with a glossy black blue wings and tail. There are white feathers at the tip of the tail and elongated gray or light purple white feathers at the back of the head and neck. The female is similar to the male except it has a pale gray-buff or light brown head, neck and upper chest. Juveniles are mostly brown until after their second or third winter. Anhinga lack oil glands to waterproof their feathers. They will often spread out their wings and feathers to dry if they become waterlogged. Their call is a raspy croaking sound. This resident breeding bird is found throughout much of Florida in freshwater swamps, marshes and ponds in urban and rural area and less frequently in brackish or saltwater habitats. Their diet consists mainly of sh which they spear with their bill, but they will also eat insects and crustaceans. Anhinga will place their nests in mixed-species colonies of Herons, Egrets and Cormorants. These colonies range from six to several hundred pairs of nesting birds. The male Anhinga begins nest construction and collects nearly all of the twigs, sticks and green material for the nest, which is built ve to 100 feet above the ground. The female nishes building the bulky platform nest. Egg-laying often occurs during March and April. Three to ve white to plain blue eggs covered with a chalky deposit will hatch in 35 to 28 days. The young birds remain near the nest until they are fully grown and capable of ight. My husband, Brian, and I live in Muse in the Jacks Branch area where we have been together for 16 years. My family moved to South Florida 80 years ago settling rst in the Clewiston area before branching out to surrounding communities. At school age my family moved to Indiantown where I was educated from Kindergarten through 7th grade. Before the 8th grade we moved to the Paci c Northwest w here I graduated from a large high school in Corvallis, Oregon. My rst career was in law enforcement as a cadet deputy and I married a local police of cer. We started a family and changed career paths to the Oil and Gas Industry that was booming in Farmington, New Mexico. My life took another path 18 years later when both children left for college and I moved back to Florida and married Brian McLean. I love my life in the swamp and feel blessed to have neighbors who also like the privacy that rural living provides. Brian raised his two girls in the swamp and both Julie and Laura have stayed in the area. Julie McGirt teaches math at LaBelle Middle School. Laura Phillips is an accountant for Liquid Plant in Immokalee and also my Campaign Treasurer. Their husbands, Jeff and Charlie respectively, are also Volunteer Firemen for LaBelle Fire Department. Brian and I are active members in the Alva United Methodist Church. My promise to you will be to focus on emerging technologies and provide a quality product to the Citizens of Glades County. I'm not talking about only assessing property. The picture is bigger than that. Larry Luckey has done his job estimating the market value of property and appraising for tax collection. My vision is much larger. The property appraiser should be the platform to build and network other department data which can be provided to inside and outside customers. Plainly stated, have a kick butt Web site developed with GIS tools that will display aerials and parcel addressing with correct street names. One address and one address only! This basic product can then be provided to other Web mapping services such as MapQuest, Bing Maps, Google and also Car Navigation Systems such as TomTom and OnStar. Talk about putting Glades County on the map. wow! Now take this idea and start building layers on this map such as Parcel Land Use, Future Land Use, Building Permits, Recreational Area, Wet Lands and Utility Structures and on and on and on. You now have a product that can be used by real estate appraisers, title companies, insurance companies, water management and interested investors. Do you get the big picture? It's no longer about just assigning a value to a parcel for collecting taxes, which will continue, but will be used as a tool for many, many agencies and private businesses. I remember years ago trying to re nance my home. It took so long because the assigned real estate appraiser would have to drive to Moore Haven and look up records and he wasn't going to be in the area for several weeks. I couldn't wrap my head around why it would take so long until it was explained that the comparables he needed could not be obtained from any networked database. Understand that I found this hard to accept. I was a licensed Real Estate Agent years ago in what I thought was a remote area of the Rocky Mountains but compared to Glades County we were light years ahead in networking our Real Estate information. For the last 8.5 years, I have worked as E9-1-1 Coordinator for Hendry County. I have worked very hard to build an excellent network with the Hendry County Property Appraiser's Of ce. Phill Pelletier and his staff have relied on me to provide them with addressing and street names. This partnership has resulted in a fantastic product for the public on so many levels. Phill understands that if we tried to do this without working together we would have two different products that would be inferior. His of ce provides the parcel shape les and I provide the street and addressing. Go to his Web site: www.hendryprop.com and look at his GIS Map. The 911 map that is used to locate 911 callers is one of the products of this collaboration. Sheriff Steve Whidden, Police Chief Don Gutshall and the Seminole Police Department use this map for displaying caller location. This same map is also used by the Building Permit and Zoning Department; it's also used by the Engineering Department which issues driveway permits. The database is used by the Elections Department to verify voter registration. And the map and data are used by the Post Masters to determine if a mailing address or physical address is valid. Are you getting the picture? The data just doesn't belong to one department. We have broken down so man y barriers and have provided a good product to be shared. This is why I want to be the next Propert y Appraiser for Glades County. I want to brea k down barriers and build a network. I have the skills, knowledge and just like the Verizon commercial a lot of skilled technicians standing behind me wanting to help build a networka product that Glades County can be proud of. Understand that this will be a process, it will not all be done in the rst year. It will require budgeting for software, programming and consulting. There is always a start up cost when you change or update technology but you take it one step at a time and don't reinvent the wheel. Instead build on what you have. Go with what you know, bu y only what you need. It's not a huge expense and it's not rocket science. But it will take a commitment and I'm willing to take on that commitment. By Pat DobbinsHendry/Glades Health Dept. The goal of National Stroke Awareness Month is to make Americans aware that they may be able to save the life of a person experiencing a stroke. According to the American Heart Association, stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability and the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Every 40 seconds someone has a stroke in the United States. Community awareness is so important in the case of stroke because recognizing the signs of stroke and getting help immediately can drastically minimize the effects of a stroke. Warning signs of stroke can include: sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg (especially on one side of the body); sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance coordination; and sudden sever headache with no known cause. According to the National Stroke Association, a person experiencing a stroke can be treated if people have acted FAST. FAST is an acronym for things to check in a suspected stroke victim: F – Face Does the face droop on one side when the person smiles? A Arm After raising both arms, does one of the arms drift downwards? S Speech After repeating a simple phrase, does the person’s speech sound slurred or strange? T Time If any or all of the above are observed, call for 9-1-1 and ask for medical assistance. Saving someone’s life – or even your own – may be as simple as remembering “Give Me 5”. With stroke, every minute counts. “Give Me 5” offers a quick stroke check using ve short words: Walk – Is their balance off? Talk – Is their speech slurred or face droopy? Reach – Is one side weak or numb? See – Is their vision all or partly lost? Feel – Is their headache severe? If you are concerned about your health, please contact your healthcare provider. A petitioner shall mail a copy of the petition to the applicant at the address indicated above, at the time of ling. The failure of any person to le a petition within the appropriate time period shall constitute a waiver of that person’s right to request an administrative determination (hearing) under Sections 120.569 and 120.57, F.S., or to intervene in this proceeding and participate as a party to it. Although EPA’s 45-day review period will be performed concurrently with the public comment period, the deadline for submitting a citizen petition to object to the EPA Administrator will be determined as if EPA’s 45-day review period is performed after the public comment period has ended. The nal Title V air operation permit will be issued after the conclusion of the 45-day EPA review period so long as no adverse comments are received that result in a different decision or signi cant change of terms or conditions. The status regarding EPA’s 45-day review of this project and the deadline for submitting a citizen petition can be found at the following website address: http://www.epa.gov/region4/air/permits/Florida.htm. Section 7661d(b)(1), to object to the issuance of any Title V air operation permit. Any petition shall be based only on objections to the Permit that were raised with reasonable speci city during the 30day public comment period provided in the Public Notice, unless the petitioner demonstrates to the Administrator of the EPA that it was impracticable to raise such objections within the comment period or unless the grounds for such objection arose after the comment period. Filing of a petition with the Administrator of the EPA does not stay the effective date of any permit properly issued pursuant to the provisions of Chapter 62-213, F.A.C. Petitions led with the Administrator of EPA must meet the requirements of 42 U.S.C. Section 7661d(b)(2) and must be led with the Administrator of the EPA at: U.S. EPA, 401 M Street, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20460. John William Waters, 67, Bridalwood Drive, was arrested Tuesday, May 8, on a felony charge of grand theft auto. He is being held on $20,000 bond. An arrest report by Deputy Chadwick Douberley, of the Highlands County Sheriff’s Of ce (HCSO), stated that Waters apparently took the Ford Explorer SUV from the Brighton Seminole Reservation and drove it to Sebring where he was arrested. The deputy’s report went on to state that surveillance cameras at a Circle K convenience store on U.S. 27 in Sebring shows Waters driving into the parking lot in the SUV. No one else was in the vehicle when it pulled up to the store, added Deput y Douberley. According to the report Waters told the deputy that he rented the vehicle in Okeechobee, but could not produce any paperwork to prove that and could not give Deputy Douberle y the name of the rental company. The vehicle was reportedly bearing a Seminole Tribe license tag, and is owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Waters also was not given permission to use the vehicle, the deputy stated. The water release began May 15 with a target ow to the Caloosahatchee of 2,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) over a three-day period as measured at W.P. Franklin Lock and Dam (S-79) east of Fort Myers. The purpose of the release is to reduce the likelihood of algal blooms in the Caloosahatchee, an issue which has concerned water managers and health of cials during the drought. This is the second release the Corps has conducted in th e past month related to reduce the likelihood of algal blooms. The Corps conducted a similar release April 23-27. On Tuesday, the lake stage is 11.56 feet. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 20 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 17, 2012 Special to the Glades Democrat/ B. BrownThe Glades County Woman’s Club recently installed new of cers. From left to right are: Margaret Brown, Bonita Drayton, Bobbi Brown, Dianne Tillery, Donna Storter-Long and Kandi Snow. Twenty-two members of Glades County W oman’s Club entered the clubhouse of M RV Resort to see breathtaking decorations in a seaside mode on all the tables. Each table featured a centerpiece of “ocean foam” on a bed of blue gauze, with seashells and other articles that had washed ashore and lodged there. Globes on each table contained sand from all over the world--black, white and beige--with tiny seashells and centered with a candle. Members were instructed to open scrolls beside their plates, and read along as President Kandi Snow informed the group that “Like the diversity in the sands that form our beautiful shores of this great nation, so is the diversity in each of us that forms the membership of this great organization,,,so is the Glades County Woman’s Club which provides for a better way, and a better life to those it serves.” “Shipwrecked” bottles contained messages to indicate the responsibility of each of cer, and as Margaret Brown installed each of cer, she requested that she remove the symbol, and present it for the membership to see. Bonita Drayton’s symbol as treasurer was a lifeboat, indicating that without nancial stability and accurate records our ship would not oat. Dianne Tillery, recording secretary’s symbol was a compass and a map, instructing her to provide accurate accounts of where the club has been and w here it is going. A rope indicating that communication binds each other and the community was the symbol for Barbara Brown, corresponding secretary. Donna Storter-Long’s bottle contained a symbol of an anchor, emphasizing support for the president, and guidance that is strong and steady. She was reinstalled as vice-president. Kandi Snow, re-elected president, removed a symbol of a ship’s wheel, indicating guidance and leadership. Margaret instructed the newly-installed of cers to “let your beam show by lighting a candle in the lighthouse” which centered an arrangement on the head table. Ms. Brown then challenged each member to “muster on deck, and light her candle indicating that she will remain a constant support and assurance of a Safe Harbor for the coming club year.” With all candles glowing, Ms. Brown noted, “How lucky we are to have Glades County Woman’s Club’s strong light for 96 years and from a tiny beam of light to a full glow, so will Glades County Woman’s Club’s path be a huge glow in the future for each other, our club, and our community of Glades County”! Following the installation, Donna StorterLong conducted a hilarious game on the order of a Chinese Auction, and each time Kim Clement chose a door prize, someone else decided it was just what they wanted. Kim announced that anyone who is interested in Zumba lessons, should talk to her, as they will be starting on Monday, and are open to anyone--not just 4-Hers. Her presentation of the rst steps of Zumba should have been caught on tape! Mrs. Snow presented each of her of cers with a gift, thanking them for their support. The club presented Kandi with a gift in appreciation for a job well done. Mrs. Snow announced that she looks forward to seeing and working with everyone, starting at the rst club meeting in September. She also thanked M RV Resort for the use of their clubhouse, and Cassie’s Cracker Cooking, who catered the scrumptious banquet!
