MurphySpecial to the Glades County Democrat A rst of its kind community that caters to car buffs and people interested in race car driving has been proposed in southwest Glades County. The Driving Club of Port Labelle would be similar to golf course communities, only the golf course would be replaced with a sports car style course where the residents could drive at most any speed they like. A comprehensive plan amendment was considered by the Glades County Planning Board last Tuesday, March 13, and will be heard by the Board of County Commissioners on April 10. Planning Director Larry Hilton said the best way to describe the project is it is like a golf club that isn't for golfers but car buffs, those that own corvettes, BMWs, and other fast cars. MurphySpecial to the Glades County Democrat The unemployment rate in Glades County continued to decline in January from 9.7 percent in December, 2011, to 9.1 percent in January. The number of residents who collected bene ts fell from 498 in December to 476 in January, according to the latest report from the US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. Okeechobee County's unemployment rate was 10.3 percent, down from the December rate of 11.6 percent. The report showed 1,985 residents collected bene ts in January which compared to 2,078 in December. Around the region, Highlands County had 9.0 percent, Hendry County 11.8, Martin County 9.6, Osceola County 10.7, St. Lucie 11.8, and Palm Beach County 9.6 percent. Some of the topics currently under discussion include the following:Lake Okeechobee Here they go again with another release of water into the Caloosahatchee. Wasn’t the rain event enough to take care of the river for a little while? The lake is below 13 feet. They need to shut the gates and keep all the water in the lake that they can. We already have mandatory year-round water restrictions. Yet they send fresh lake water out to the ocean.N.I.M.B.Y. Glades county residents over in Port LaBelle are getting a might upset. Seems county staff has aligned itself with a developer who wants to build a driving club right in their community with the inherent imposition of a private recreational race track into the ambience of a peacefully quiet neighborhood. County staff seems to like the novel idea of a driving club and doesn’t seem to believe noise will be a problem and that a suf cient barrier can be constructed to prev ent the noise from becoming a nuisance. J ust how can anyone expect a driving club to enhance the peace and quiet enjoyment of either neighborhood? If you don’t live there maybe you think it won’t matter... but there are nearly 300 voters who do live there and Glades County elections have been decided by fewer votes than that and this an election year.  Have any of you been to the proposed site? Something like 90 percent of it is currently over grown golf course that currently has cows on it. The track, you know the part w here the “noise” will be, is right on the side of Highway 80 so you already have a good bit of noise there most of the day anyway. This is proposed to be a UN-lighted track, that means NO NIGHT racing. He wants to take the rest of the property and build townhouse style homes with racing garages attached. A race car is not a cheap thing. You are not talking about trailer park cars here, we are talking about cars that are north of $100,000 invested. It never fails to amaze me, the attitude of the people that live here. It pretty much boils down to close the door behind me NOBODY ELSE CAN BUILD AFTER ME IT HAS TO STAY JUST LIKE THIS. Folks, we let you build, and if this guy gets his permits in order, we should let him as well. A track like this will, if built (and we all know plans fall through on the best ideas), add something like 100 river front homes to the tax rolls (tax dollars?), somebody has to build this stuff. When it is open and running somebody has to run the place. Sounds like this will create JOBS. Have you ever been to a real track? 90 percent of the time, there is no racing. So basically you would have a bunch of river front homes with RVs and race cars in the yard/driveway/garages.  Usually something with nuisance potential is built in an isolated area then urban sprawl brings subdivisions encroaching and the new residents have the audacity to complain. Maybe we should respect the idea of rst come rst served...  In the rst come, rst serve mentality if they don’t want this here perhaps they should purchase the property from them to prevent this. Otherwise, it’s put up or shut up.  Their plan shows homes “around the track” they say their model is Autobahn Country Club near Chicago. ACC only has a few apartments over garages on their site. Videos of Autobahn CC show that a lot of noise is generated there from one car, Southland said up to 25 cars at 150 mph at Glades track.  Really wish somebody who was “against” it would come up with something besides NIMBY. Really folks, growth happens, it is called progress, and it’s inevitable even in Hendry and Glades counties!Shooting sports Congratulations to the 4-H Shooting Sports Club on their recent honors and especially to the young man who is going to nationals. These young people work very hard and they deserve some recognition. Good luck to them in the future! Public Issues Forum/Speak Out Al Schauseil will be missedThe Glades County Historical Society members are mourning the death of their treasurer, Al Schauseil, former owner of Hicpochee Hunting Lodge on Riverside Drive in Moore Haven. Al Schauseil had bravely and stoically battled cancer for the past ve years. He will never be forgotten due to his erce independence, his wit and his love and kindness to all. During his eighties and nineties he took several local computer courses offered at the Glades County Library, the Glades County School System and lessons from an instructor in LaBelle. During these years, he took care of the GCHS bookkeeping and the design of their rst brochures, cards, letterheads and newsletters. His artistic talents led him to the art of old photo restoration as well as enlarging photos and helping publish their newsletters. He participated in every event held by the GCHS, working at painting, cleaning, furnishing, and selling memberships. If you weren’t inclined to join, he laid on the guilt and his victims nally just gave in and sent their dues. If he thought you could afford more, he told you. His good friends, Julie Wigton and Donald Miles were his drivers throughout his ve years of outpatient surgeries and return visits in Ft. Myers as he fought the cancer. He did not complain of the painful procedures and always wanted to repay them with funlled dinners and story-telling sessions. After moving from the Lodge, he lived in the brown A-frame on Riverside Drive, giving his e-mail address as A-Frame Al. He traveled to the Department of Historic Preservation in Tallahassee to help present two grant applications that resulted in large grants that helped restore the outside, and electric and plumbing of The Pieter Westergaard House. He entertained countless duck hunters and shermen at his Lodge, cooking for them, telling hundreds of stories, (mostl y true), and making many new friendships. He was noted for making the best martini in Florida. We miss him already and will pa y tribute to this ne gentleman with a memorial service on April 9 at 1:30 p.m. in the St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Moore Haven followed by a memorial service and wake at The Westergaard House, 270 Ave. L, Moore Haven. BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe Red-bellied Woodpecker is the most abundant and widespread of the seven woodpecker species known to breed in Florida. It is found in the Eastern United States in most forests, w oodlands, suburbs and is a frequent visitor at backyard feeders. This sleek, round-headed medium-sized w oodpecker is about 9 to 10.5 inches long and has a wingspan of 15 to 18 inches. Their name is derived from the reddish tinge on their belly which is dif cult to see during observation in the eld. It often appears pale with a barred black and white back. White patches near their wingtips can be seen when this bird ies. It has an undulating ight pattern. Males have a red on the side of their head going from the bill to the nape; females have a red patch on the nape and another above the bill. A somewhat similar bird species, the Red-headed W oodpecker, has a red hood. This vocal bird's most common call is a shrill, rolling "kwirr or churr" They also make a gruff, coughing "cha chat chat" or throaty growl. Males are more often heard than females drumming on roofs, metal gutters, and hollow trees. Babies will make a high-pitched begging call of "pree-preepree". Their diet consists of insects, seeds, fruit, nuts, and pulp. They sometimes wedge large nuts in bark crevices then use their beaks to whack the nut into smaller pieces. Occasionally they will eat lizards, nestling birds or minnows. These woodpeckers can stick out their tongue nearly 2 inches past their beak. The barbed tip and the bird's sticky spit make it easy to snatch prey for deep crevices in trees. The males have longer wider-tipped tongues than the female which possibly increases a breeding pair's ability to maximize their foraging for available food within their territory. The Red-bellied Woodpecker may nest in cavities from 5 to 70 feet above the ground. The male chooses a nest site in a dead hardwood or pine tree, dead limb of a live tree or a fence post. Both sexes work together to excavate a new nest cavity in 7 to 10 days, but will often place the new hole beneath a nest cavity used in a previous year. There is seldom more than one pair of birds per tree. They will aggressively defend their nest site. From April to July the nesting pair may raise up to 3 broods in the nest cavity that is lined with wood chips from the nest excavation. The female will lay 4 to 5 white eggs which are incubated for 12 days with the young edging in 24 to 27 days. Cameron was born Feb. 8, 1991, in Brooksville, Fla. He is the son of Terry “Skip” Gene and Kathleen Gail (Nuttall) Crawford. He was in the FIJI Fraternity at his college. He was also a 1st degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. He is survived by father, Terry (Skip) G. Crawford Jr.; mother, Kathleen N. Crawford; brothers, Martin Crawford and Casey Crawford; grandmother, Shirley Nuttall; grandfather, Robert Nuttall; grandmother, Louise Boudreaux; and grandfather, Terry G. Crawford Sr.; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Schauseil, 92, a resident of Moore Haven for more than 35 y ears, died March 5, 2012, in Boca Raton. The Treasurer of the Glades County Historical Society for 20 years, A l was a tireless volunteer and generous supporter of all aspects of the Society, from managing grant funding, producing all communications and signage, serving as point of contact, rst webmaster, and more. A longtime yacht insurance broker for Bertram Yachts in Miami, A l made lasting friendships with sea captains and captains of industry alike. At 55, Al retired to Moore Haven where he acquired the Hic-PoChee Lodge that had belonged to his good friend, former Miami restaurant owner Andy Schuberth. Al then started his second career of 32 years as Lodge Master. Al Schauseil was renowned for his Hic-Po-Chee Lodge as a distinctive duck hunter’s haven with gourmet fare. A WWII veteran, Al was a Staff Sgt. in the US A rmy Air Corps, receiving the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal. After the war, he settled in Miami, where he graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in English Literature in 1949. “Big Al” w as an avid reader, especially of the classics and theology. He loved music, particularly the big band era, Frank Sinatra, and classical music. A self-taught artist, Al produced many oil paintings in his 30s and 40s, and later turned his talent to computer graphics and original greeting cards. Al was an old school gentleman who loved life and valued friendship, family, and faith above all. Born in Rochester, NY, Al had nine siblings. He is survived by his brother Tom (Willyne) Schauseil of Miramar and 22 nieces and nephews. He was buried with full military honors at the South Florida National Cemetery in Lake W orth. A Memorial Mass is scheduled for Monday, A pril 9, at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 1800 N. U.S. 27 N.W., Moore Haven, FL 33471. Charity Hope Lee, 43OKEECHOBEE — Charity Hope Lee, age 43, of Okeechobee, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2012, in Clewiston. Charity was born Aug. 23, 1968, in Killeen, Texas. She is the daughter of David Harley Lee, Sr. and the late Susan Delona(Coker) Smelley. She was employed by Seminole Tribe of Florida as a Slot Supervisor for many years. She is survived by her father, David H. Lee Sr.; stepfather, James “Butch” Smelley Jr.; brother, David H. Lee Jr. (Tammie); stepbrother, James “Bo” Smelley III; sisters, Michele Howard (Rodney) and Manda Thomas (Wade); and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Arrangements by Akin-Davis Funeral Home Clewiston. Roy Eugene Cotton, 72CLEWISTON — Roy Eugene Cotton, age 72, of Clewiston, died Monday, March 26, 2012, at home in Clewiston. Roy, also known to by many as Brother, was born Feb. 7, 1940, in Baker, Fla. He is the son of the late William and Clara (Martin) Cotton. He was employed by U.S. Sugar Corporation for 47 years. He also raised cattle and operated an orange grove on his farm. He is survived by daughter, Carol Cotton (Alan Parham); granddaughter, Ariana Parham; son, David Cotton (Tammy Wiseman); granddaughter, Zoie Cotton; grandson, Ethan Johnson; brothers, Robert “Dub” (Ann) Cotton, John “Dill” Cotton, Troy (Tillie) Cotton, all of Clewiston, Freddie Cotton; sisters, Annie Mae (Ken) Roleston, Susie (Mike) Greene, Mary (Devon) Summerlin, all of Milton, Fla.; and a host of nieces and nephews. Roy also has many friends in and around the Clewiston area. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and sisters, Derley Holley, William “Buck” Cotton, Rachel Cooley, Ellie Hainey, and James Cotton. Interment will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clewiston. Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have risen 7.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.89/g yesterday. This compares with the national average that has increased 4.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.86/g. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 33.1 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 15.0 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 21.9 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 29.5 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. “The national average has risen twenty one consecutive days, according to our data, a troubling sign. Typically we expect such increases to occur more so in April,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “We’re 31-cents per gallon ahead of our year ago pace, and I’m seriously contemplating revising my January forecasts upward having seen things race higher, faster than expected. If there’s any ounce of good news for motorists, its that such high prices so quickly may mean prices will peak in April rather than May,” DeHaan said. Gas Price Update The U.S. Small Business Administration announced on January 27th that federal economic injury disaster loans are available to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives and most private non-pro t organizations of all sizes located in Florida impacted by the extended drought that began on June 1, 2010. The SBA’s disaster declaration includes Palm Beach County. Under this declaration, the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan program is available to eligible farm-related and nonfarm-related entities that suffered nancial losses as a direct result of this disaster. With the exception of aquaculture enterprises, farmers, ranchers and agricultural producers covered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture are not eligible to apply to SBA. Nurseries are eligible to apply in drought declarations. The loan amount can be up to $2 million with a 3 percent interest for non-pro t organizations, 4 percent for small businesses and terms up to 30 years. The SBA determines eligibility based on the size of the applicant, type of activity and its nancial resources. Loan amounts and terms are set by the SBA and are based on each applicant’s nancial condition. These working capital loans may be used to pay xed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other bills that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred. These loans are not intended to replace lost sales or pro ts. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 7 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 29, 2012 BY MARK KINGThe shing for bass on Lake Okeechobee continues to be awesome and it doesn't seem like it is going to slow down anytime soon. I have been catching bass on both arti cial lures and on wild shiners, and the wild shiner bite has been off the hook with eight dozen shiners only lasting until noon. The water level is at 12.59 feet above sea level and going down but still a foot higher then it was last year at this time. The bass have spawned and are still spawning on the outside reed line closest to the lake this year; the water has nally cleared up enough to start seeing the beds. I am still shing from PelicanBay to Cochran's Pass just depending on which direction the wind is blowing. But the main thing to keep in mind is that most of the bass are either in the reeds closest to the lake or out in open water up to one hundred yards out from the reed line. I have been catching some schooling bass out in open water in the morning on spinnerbaits, look for the birds diving on bait and that is where you need to be shing. As far as shing in the grass or reeds I have been using a ounce black and blue jig to catch most all of my sh but I have also caught a few texas rigging a Charlie's Worms Large Craw sh in a dark color. You need to sh slow to get the bites and don't expect a lot of bites but the ones you get will be good ones. The spinnerbait bite has also really picked up the past couple weeks shing main lake points is your best bet. The shing here on Okeechobee hasn't been better and if you are thinking about coming here and going shing then now is the time to make it happen. The bluegill will be going on the beds soon and the bass will be hanging around eating them like candy. I love to throw a wake bait in a bluegill pattern over the beds to catch bass during this time of the year. All of the guides here on the south end of the lake out of Roland Martin's Marina and Resort have been having a great year catching lots of bass and making clients happy, while the tournaments have been setting record catches with lots of big bass making it to the scales. The weather is great along with the shing here in Florida, plan a family shing vacation soon. I still have a few open days in April for here on Lake Okeechobee and then some tarpon shing opening for in the Florida Keys in May and June. This nding might distress growers, but it could enable scientists to better monitor the insect and maybe cut the chances healthy trees become infected. The study was published online March 22 by the journal PLoS Pathogens. The article, which is open access, is at http:// dx.plos.org/10.1371/journal.ppat.1002610 Greening-infected citrus trees emit a fragrant chemical called methyl salicylate, said study author Lukasz Stelinski, an assistant professor with UF's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Citrus trees release the same chemical, in the same amount, when under attack by the Asian citrus psyllid, the insect that transmits the bacterium.When the pests encounter a faint whiff of methyl salicylate they interpret it to mean that other psyllids have found a good place to feed, and hurry to join the banquet. One experiment in the study showed that psyllids were more likely to land on infected citrus trees than healthy ones. It turns out the dinner bell is a bit misleading for the psyllids, he said. Greening infections deplete trees of some nutrients psyllids need, including nitrogen and phosphorus. Another experiment in the study showed that psyllids feeding on infected trees frequently moved to healthy trees when given the opportunity. "We believe they (the infected trees) don't taste right to the psyllids," said Stelinski, at UF's Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred. But even a short feeding session is enough for the invasive insects to suck up the greening bacterium, along with the plant sap they consume. When the psyllids y to healthy trees and resume feeding, they're likely to infect those trees. The good news is that methyl salicylate is inexpensive and widely available, so it could be used to battle greening. For example, it could be put in traps used to monitor groves for the presence of psyllids, to attract the pests. Another possibility: If methyl salicylate were released in small amounts throughout a citrus grove, the pervasive odor could camou age infected trees' scent. This strategy could reduce the chance that psyllids converge on infected trees, by making it appear that all trees were ringing the dinner bell. Stelinski said he plans to pursue both ideas in future studies. EDITOR BEGIN OPTIONAL TRIM HERE The psyllid is native to southern Asia and was rst identi ed in Florida in 1998. The tiny insect initially caused problems by stunting tree growth and promoting mold infections. Citrus greening disease is the most serious threat to Florida's $9 billion citrus industry. The disease weakens and eventually kills infected trees, and currently there is no cure. According to a UF study, greening has cost the state $3.63 billion since 2006, stemming from crop losses and loss of income to growers and citrus-related businesses. Lake Seminole legend Rodger Beaver of Dawson, Ga., had mounted an impressive nal day charge of 19 pounds, 8 ounces to take the lead, leaving McMillan's de cit at 17 pounds, 3 ounces. As McMillan slid his last sh into the tank, he took a breath and held it. For a second the EverStart weigh-in world in the Walmart parking lot froze. The only sound was the whispering wind lapping the American ag against a brilliant blue sky. "Seventeen pounds, four ounces!" exclaimed Tournament Director Ron Lappin into the mic as McMillan's st cut the air in celebration and relief. And there's little doubt that far above that blue sky, the late Jimmy McMillan smiled down on his son. "This is pretty sweet," McMillan said. "I didn't think I had enough, so this is really sweet. After all that's happened this year, this is particularly special to me, it means a lot." McMillan, who hails from Clewiston, Fla., has become a perennial top contender in Okeechobee tournaments, but this win at Seminole makes a statement that he is not just an Okeechobee local. The pure shing instincts he exhibited this w eek in regards to tapping into the shad-spawn bite are quite impressive, especially given the fact he had never shed a shad-spawn pattern before. "Coming here I didn't even know what a shad spawn was," McMillan said. "My friend Chad Prough, who shes here a lot, kind of told me w hat to look for, but other than that I have no prior experience with bass feeding on spawning shad." In the end, most of McMillan's sh came from one area in the Chattahoochee River where shad were spawning in the morning. day and then returned to it very early on Wednesday and witnessed big bass “going off” on balls of shad wadded up around clumps of “gator grass” or “peanut grass.” “My primary spot had clumps of that peanut grass out in about four feet of water and that was the deal,” McMillan explained. “There was a lot of that type of grass on the bank in that area, but the isolated clumps out deeper were the ones the shad were using the most.” McMillan’s best lure was a white 4X4 swim jig teamed with a white craw trailer, tied to 65pound test braided line. He also used a Spro popping frog, also tied to 65-pound test braid. On day one the small area produced 21 pounds, 15 ounces to give McMillan the early lead. A late boat number and early sunshine killed his best spot on day two, giving up just one quality bass. He resorted to a Zoom speedworm (junebug) to catch two more big sh. The trio of bass held him in third place on day two and kept him in striking distance for today.” “I got there early and it was really overcast, which helped prolong the bite by about 45 minutes,” McMillan said. “I did most of my damage from about 8 to 9 this morning and then it was over. I caught most of my sh today on the jig. If they blew up on the jig and didn’t get it, I’d cast the popping frog over there for a second chance, which worked a couple of times.” Of particular note was the size of McMillan’s bass. Remember, he was two sh short of lling out a perfect 15-bass scorecard, meaning he had 13 bass that produced his winning total of 51 pounds, 11 ounces, giving him a 4-pound average. Also McMillan credited his Power-Poles for his success. “The wind was blowing in on the grass where the shad were spawning,” he described. “Without the Power-Poles, I would have blown all up on top of the frenzy and completely disturbed the area. Regretfully they tell us, but rmly they compel us, to say goodbye to you.” Dear Readers, we received a sad note from the Clewiston News editor: “I sincerely appreciate all of the hard work that you all have put into your weekly columns across the years. The columns have been eye-opening, encouraged us to take a thoughtful approach to our daily lives and have, on more than just one occasion, even brought some of our readers to tears. Such commitment is to be commended. Thank you. I would have been a happy person if we could maintain them forever, but we can’t. A s you know, the newspaper industry continues to be challenged by these tough economic times and while we are still working at attracting more advertising to support our product, we are not there yet. Advertising determines the size of our papers. The more ads we have, the larger our paper becomes. The larger our paper becomes, the more we’re able to publish all of the great content that is submitted to us. The smaller we become, the more our ability to publish diminishes. That’s w here we are at today.” So, how does one gracefully say goodbye? Saying goodbye is almost never easy, especially w hen the circumstances are sad or sudden. According to the State University of New York at Buffalo, “Saying goodbye is one the most avoided and feared human experiences. As a culture, we have no clear-cut rituals for saying goodbye to valued others.” The human side of me points out that I don’t really need to say goodbye. People can still read my weekly “From the Heart” articles by emailing FirstMethodist@aol.com to be put on the weekly email listing. Past, present, and future copies of my writings can be found on www. ClewistonUMC.org. On the other hand, the emotional part of me will miss the weekly writings to the newspaper and compels me to say goodbye. What is it, really, to say “Good-bye”? Once, centuries ago, English-speaking Christians parted saying, “God be with ye.” In time, it became “God be wi’ ye,” and nally, “Good-b’ye.” So, God be with ye! There comes a time to release that which we hold tightly. Only when we open our hands to let go can we receive the blessings God has in store. God intends for His children to live full and abundant lives one day at a time, without regret for the things that have passed or dread of what might come. Nobody knows the price of gas tomorrow, or what tomorrow holds. But we can know the One who holds tomorrow; and we can trust the Holy Spirit to guide us through today. Response to Conditions or a Change of Formats?BY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchTo write a last article is thinking “What does one say?” My intentions over the past years have been to share a dimension of faith, hope, love. I nd them at the roots of all religion and am privileged to be one who shares them. When presented with a “last opportunity”; my thoughts turned to the Lord and His last opportunity to speak to His disciples. Saint John’s gospel and the Last Supper; Chapters 13 to 18 are the Lord’s nal comments. They speak of His humility, the willingness to face dif culties knowing that things will work out, the betrayal of a trusted follower but assured he would become a champion of the faith, words of comfort to disciples and the promise that they would follow Him, that He would be with those who love Him forever, and a new commandment: “My command is this; Love each other as I have loved you (John 15:12).” There is a reminder that “You did not choose me, but I chose you…(v. 16).” Somehow, God has showered His love upon us; there must be something special, something worthy about us in spite of all of our imperfections and faults. I know of those occasions when I have felt unworthy and loved at the same time; a most wonderful feeling that humans can experience. To know that feeling comes from God makes it right, gives wholeness and heals the worst of human conditions. What does God ask in return? That we love one another! In a world full of doubts, uncertainties, war, tragedy, disasters, fears; knowing that we are made in God’s image and are capable of loving as much as being loved; it will nally, some day change things for the better. Jesus was emphatic in telling us to love one another; He phrased it as a command. This “eleventh commandment” is the one that gets to the root of what’s behind the other ten of them; not expressed negatively and not set up as a potential for failure, but as a recognition that we can share what God has implanted in us and that we, who bear His image, can change the world. That’s what it is all about; that’s what we need to go and do! I prefer to think of this “ nal article” not as an end but as a change in formats; I hope to share the same message in other ways, other media, other opportunities. The message is eternal; formats may change but God’s gifts of faith, hope and love go on. M y hope is that all of our ways of “getting the message out” in our communities will continue. In the meantime, let your editors know of your wishes, I am happy to contribute when possible. I trust that we continue to have “community newspapers” in every sense of the word, and know that religious belief and activity is a vital part of our community. Thank you for your readership during the past 10+ years. Editor’s Note: The decision to discontinue the religion columns was made from a purely business standpoint. Since the announcement, we have received a tremendous outpouring o f support for the columns. Monroe of Hughson, Calif., won the Power-Pole Slam Sunday on Lake Okeechobee w ith a four-day total of 108 pounds, 5 ounces. It was his second Elite win. In his rst, six years ago on Lake Amistad in the inaugural event of the newly formed series, he also totaled more than 100 pounds — 104-8 to be exact. “Winning with over 100 pounds is awesome,” said Monroe, who took home $100,000 and an instant berth into the 2013 Bassmaster Classic. “I really wanted to break my own record today, and it feels really good.” His Sunday check pushed his Bassmaster career earnings to over $1 million. Weighing more than 100 pounds of bass over four days gave him a second entry in what’s known as the Century Club, an exclusive group of Bassmaster Elite Series pros who have busted the mark. Monroe’s performance at the Power-Pole Slam was a complete turnaround from his 96place nish at last week’s Elite event on the St. Johns River, which Monroe called “a mental screw-up” and a wrong turn in his quest to qualify for the 2013 Classic. “The pressure’s off now, I’m in the Classic. My deal coming here was I was going to try for an Elite Top 12 at every event to make sure I got there,” said Monroe, who had missed several Classic quali cations in a row before he returned in 2012. Although Monroe scored a wire-to-wire win, and twice had big leads, victory wasn’t a sure thing on Sunday, when he started the day with a 10-ounce lead over 2012 Bassmaster Classic champ Chris Lane, a Florida native who now lives in Guntersville, Ala. “Chris Lane is the best in the world right now, and having him on my back was a scary feeling,” Monroe said after bringing 30-15 to the scales Sunday. His margin of victory was 12 pounds, 12 ounces, over Lane, who was second with 95-9. Monroe began the tournament Thursday with what proved later to be the event’s largest sack at 34-5. He led that rst day by 8-12 over South Carolina’s Davy Hite. It was the largest Day One lead in Elite history. Monroe followed up Friday with 24-25 and widened his leader’s margin to 13-11, this time over Lane. It was the largest Day-Two lead in Elite history. Then Monroe ran into trouble Saturday. Lane smashed 31-3, de ating Monroe’s big cushion to just 10 ounces. “When he came in with that big sack on Day Three, it hurt because I would have loved to have gone into today with a 14-pound lead. Who doesn’t want to go into a 14-pound lead on the last day? But it also made me step up m y game,” said Monroe. Monroe smashes 100-pound mark in capturing second Elite title By Eric KoppINI Florida When Patricia Pearce stood before the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) governing board in October of last year, she posed a few simple questions about their leasing policy—speci cally, Glades County property leased to the Old River Cattle Company of Okeechobee. Governing board chairman Joe Collins then turned to SFWMD Chief Real Estate Specialist Ruth Clements with a very simple question: “So, that was an existing lease w hen we acquired the land?” “Absolutely,” answered Ms. Clements, adding that there were actually two leases in effect—one from the Pomcor Corporation and the other from The Nature Conservancy. “Both had leases in place with Old River Cattle when we acquired the property, so we acquired it subject to the lease.” And this is where the inconsistencies w ith the district’s lease with the Old River Cattle Company begin. HISTORY In January of 2006, the district agreed to purchase the Glades County property from Pomcor, Inc. At that time Pomcor, based in Lake Worth, w as structured to purchase C-corporations. Pomcor had an option to buy the property from Glades County rancher J.F. Pearce, and exercised that option in March of 2006 w hen they bought a total of 4,734 acres. That same month, The Nature Conserv ancy purchased 1,646 acres in eastern Glades County from Pomcor on behalf of the district for approximately $16.3 million because SFWMD did not have the funds immediately available to make the purchase. SFWMD agreed to reimburse The Nature Conservancy—plus 5 percent interest and carrying costs—within three years. In August of 2007 the SFWMD ful lled that obligation and took title to the property. In essence, this means The Nature Conservancy was the funding mechanism for this property deal. SFWMD then closed on the remaining property, 3,088 acres, in May of 2006 for roughly $38 million. Although not contiguous with The Nature Conservancy property, all of the parcels were put together in a lease deal. The district agreed to manage The Nature Conservancy’s property until the district took title of the property, which they did in August of 2007. In the mean time, however, The Nature Conservancy leased their property to Stuart-based Real Estate salesman Ricou Hartman. When the district took title to the property they also took assignment of Mr. Hartman’s lease. On May 10, 2006, Pomcor entered into a lease with Mr. Hartman on the remaining 3,088 acres that Pomcor was selling to SFWMD. Also on that same day, Pomcor assigned their interest in that lease to the district and Ms. Clements signed it on behalf of the district. Mr. Hartman also represented Pomcor in the sale of the 3,088 acres to the district. On May 11, 2006, the district purchased the 3,088 acres from Pomcor subject to the lease. At no time were these leases put out for bid, which is required by Florida state statute 373.093. Which brings us to Mrs. Pearce’s questions to the governing board at their Oct. 13, 2011, meeting. After telling the board that her husband, Mark Hunter Pearce, and family members have had the property in question in their family since the 1800s she questioned why they were never given a chance to bid on the lease. “Who were the bidders? Why haven’t landowners been given options on the land?” she asked. Turning to Ms. Clements, Mr. Collins asked that all important question: “So, the lease was existing when we acquired the land?” “Absolutely,” she answered. “Both had leases in place with Old River Cattle when we acquired the property, so we acquired the property subject to those leases.” But, the leases weren’t with Old River. They were with Mr. Hartman. Old River didn’t become involved in the lease with Mr. Hartman until Jan. 3, 2008. According to state records Louis E. ‘Woody’ Larson Jr. is the principal agent of the Old River Cattle Company, while Mr. Hartman and Jeffrey O. Clemons are listed as managers. She then went on to explain to the board about the two leases that were in place when the district acquired the land—the Pomcor and The Nature Conservancy leases. Although Mr. Collins did ask that question, neither he nor any of the remaining eight governing board members asked that one vitally important question: How long had the lease been in place? The answer is very simple: one day. LEASING PROBLEMS After acquiring that lease, SFWMD amended it in 2007 and again in 2008. On May 28, 2008, the Old River Cattle Company received an extension until March 14, 2012. However, they received a 10-year lease extension in December of 2011. Again, this lease has never been put out for bids. Today, the Old River Cattle Company is operating off that same 2006 lease. And while much of the lease is similar to today’s water management leases, there are some very interesting differences. Under the terms of that 2006 lease, lessees:  cannot alter the land which includes, but is not limited to, mowing;  lessees cannot engage in any discussions with the media pertaining to the lease which includes interviews, feature articles, fact sheets or similar promotional materials; and,  lessees are responsible for obtaining all permits. Let’s take a look at these requirements. First, it has been documented that the Old River Cattle Company has been baling hay on the property and have done so as late as February of 2012. Not only does the lease state on the rst page that the property can only be utilized “... solely for purposes of cattle grazing ...” it also prohibits mowing, as mentioned above. Next, Mr. Hartman did grant a 2011 interview with the Okeechobee News for an article about the district’s leasing policy despite the lease prohibiting this. Next, SFWMD documents show that Mr. Hartman did not get a consumptive use permit to use water from the L-59 canal. Finally, because the three water control structures on the L-59 canal—which stretches from the Indian Prairie Canal to the Kissimmee River—were left free owing with no water control devices in place nearly all the property south of the canal, including Buckhead Ridge, was ooded due to Tropical Storm Fay. Because Mr. Hartman and Old River did not have the proper permits, and because there were no water control devices, are they to blame for the ooding? Several inconsistencies have already been pointed out, but they don’t end there. When this newspaper posed a question to Ms. Clements that asked if The Nature Conservancy was the “... funding mechanism to purchase the Pomcor tract ...” her answer was evasive. “In 2006, the district purchased 4,734 acres in Glades County consisting of the following: 1. 3,088 acres were purchased from Pomcor; 2. 1,646 acres were purchased from The Nature Conservancy.” Then on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, three more questions were e-mailed to the SFWMD that asked for a response from Ms. Clements. Those questions were:  In regard to the district’s lease with Ricou Hartman, is the district still operating off the original lease that was signed May 10, 2006?  If so, did Mr. Hartman violate the terms of the lease when he granted the Okeechobee News an interview to discuss that lease as alluded to on page 8 of that lease?  You stated in the Oct. 11, 2011, governing board meeting regarding the extension of the Old River Cattle Company lease that the Old River Cattle Company had been leasing the property prior to SFWMD acquiring the property. How long had Old River been leasing the property prior to SFWMD closing on that property in 2006? Simple, right? Here is the answer we received: “The Old River Cattle leases were provided to you when your public record requests were ful lled. The terms and conditions are contained in those documents. We are unable to provide additional information.” Looking back, it seems clear that the lease with Old River has been violated on several occasions. Still, Ms. Clements told her governing board that they were good tenants and, because of that, their lease should be extended for an additional 10 years. And on Dec. 13, 2011, it was. There would be no speed limit. It’s a community built around recreation just like an airpark or golf course,” he explained. The drivers club would encompass 74 acres in the Port Labelle community. The original project included a golf course but the 27-hole course was divided into separate parcels and sold off in 2003. It is proposed by Armboz, Incorporated and the Southland Group of Bonita Springs. The golf course section was designed as agriculture open on the future land use map. The rest of Port Labelle, some 235 acres total, was designated residential. The proposed comprehensive plan amendment would change the 74 acres from agriculture open to residential. The project would include 300 homes, a clubhouse, a 50-room hotel and other recreational facilities in addition to the race track. Two road courses and a go kart track would be included in the race track proposal. The applicant claimed the project would create at least 100 new jobs. The staff has recommended approval of the comprehensive plan amendment. No date has been set for a rezoning application on the property that would also be required. The application stated local schools can easily handle the additional students the project could bring. A traf c analysis conducted by the applicant noted State Road 80 and other roads could handle the additional traf c. The proposal would include garages with apartments above them for residents. The initial investment to join the Club would be about $100,000. The investment into each unit, which includes an 8-car garage, and 1-3 bedroom apartments, would be close to $600,000. The project would cater to the wealthy and af uent with average incomes in excess of $250,000 annually, according to the application. Hilton said the project would not negatively impact the surrounding area which is mostly rural neighborhoods and vacant property. “All of the property (for this project) is vacant, and there are only ve houses in Glades County near the project. There is the Laurel Oaks community in Hendry County to the south,” he added. Hilton said while there is opposition to the project he predicted it will go away once the project is explained to the public in detail, “Opposition will go away. We want to have more community meetings. We will make sure the developer addresses the residents’ concerns and in the end there shouldn’t be any opposition.” Most of the concerns will be about additional traf c and noise generated by the facility. Arrest Report The Glades County Sheriff’s Of ce investigated the following reports of crimes last week:BURGLARY Avenue B, Moore Haven  Oakmount, Moore Haven  Avenue C, Moore HavenTHEFT Pierce St., Moore Haven  County Road 721 Loop, Lakeport Investigations United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades has extended its 2011-2012 fundraising campaign, to allow time to raise the $300,000 needed to reach the $8,030,533 goal. “The Board of Directors recognizes it is in the best interest of our community to extend the campaign,” said Joe Catti, United Way board chair and president of FineMark National Bank and Trust. “It is critical to fully fund the programs of our 70 partner agencies that help more than 300,000 Lee, Hendry, and Glades residents each year.” For the last 18 years, United Way has met or exceeded its annual campaign goal. “Based on our community’s incredible track record of caring and giving, United Way rmly believes that everyone will step up to help us meet the goal,” said Cliff Smith, United Way president. Although short of the goal, the campaign has been successful: many employees have signi cantly increased their payroll-deduction pledges; several companies conducted rst-time campaigns; and the number of donors making gifts of $1,000 or more has increased. The number of people in our community who need help also is increasing. United Way 211, the help line for referral to health and social services, receives 4,000 calls a month, more than double the number of calls received before the economic downturn. The 13 United Way Houses, which serve as satellite locations for human service agencies, are seeing double the number of clients. United Way agencies provide food for hungry families through tens of thousands of meals at food pantries, meals delivered to the homebound and students’ backpacks lled with nutritious weekend meals. They also provide shelter for the abused, respite for Alzheimer’s caregivers, free or reducedcost health care for children and adults, a healthy start for babies and toddlers, lessons for those who need to master English, and many other programs and services. By Barbara BrownSpecial to the Glades County Democrat “Ooooooh you look so pretty,” “So cute—where’d you get your hat?”, and “I love hats,” were all heard at the Membership Tea honoring prospective members of Glades County Woman’s Club. Then “Why’d w e quit wearing them?” The ladies were not quite so excited about wearing gloves, however, except for Janice Brown who wore the gloves that she had worn to her junior-senior prom—remember the over the elbow ones? Consensus of everyone was that it would be fun to dress up, don their hats, and all meet at a restaurant, possibly following a church service. Not only was the tea a fun time to initiate new members, and welcome prospective members and guests who were present, the Club also held a shower for Westergaard House, the usual meeting place for GCWC. Using an Easter theme—a new beginning for the club members being initiated— Barbara Brown handed each one an Easter basket, lled with grass. She informed the group that each applicant had been approved by the membership committee, and then by the executive board. Attached to a candy egg was a slip of paper indicating an ethic of the club. Sponsors of the prospective members read the ethics and rules of the club from these slips, and then placed the egg into the member’s basket. Ms. Brown placed in the baskets eggs lled with inspirational messages, and had she not left eggshaped bubble gum at home, would have placed bubble gum in each basket, with the comment, that “an unwritten ethic of the Club is not to gossip about another member, and you surely cannot gossip while blowing a bubble, plus it gives you time to think before you speak. You will receive your bubble gum eggs at the next club meeting!” Ms. Brown told the group that the club colors are gold and green, its ower is the marigold and its logo is the Lone Cypress. She then compared the hardiness of the marigold and the cypress tree to that of the Glades County Woman’s Club, which was formed in 1916. Meetings were suspended during the war years, but members folded bandages as their contribution to the war effort. Each sponsor handed the applicants a bud vase containing a yellow ower with the note that “marigolds come in all colors, cheering up any garden, and encouraging the new members to do the same—cheer up whatever spot in which you nd yourself.” Welcomed into the Glades County Woman’s Club were: Kimberly Clement, Janice Brown, Suzanne Ilich, Lori Ward, Angela Colegrove, Aletris Farnam, Priscilla Spooner, and Vaushea Lewis (in absentia). Ms. Lewis will receive her basket and bud vase at the April meeting. Ms. Brown then called Bonita Drayton forward, and presented her with a marigold plant in a bunny container in appreciation for her efforts as chairman of the membership committee, and for sponsoring ve new members. Following a wonderful buffet of nger foods and tea, a silent vote chose Ticia Boland’s hat as the favorite of the ladies. She was presented with a basket of cosmetics donated by club member, Pat Ringstaff. Runner up was a hat worn by Laura Bedard— which the club learned was created by Ticia, and featured Easter eggs on its brim. Rainbow Gardens donated a gift certi cate for the runner up. This program encourages students to donate loose change to buy extra books for the library and Scholastic matches their monetary donations to send books to national non-pro t organizations dedicated to families in need. Students had the choice of putting their loose change in containers for Principal Doreen Backes or Assistant Principal Jose Roquett. Mrs. Backes' container had the most money so she was the one who had to spend the day riding the halls of West Glades on a tricycle. Thanks to the students who contributed nearly $125 to purchase new library books while helping provide books for those in need through matching Scholastic donations.
