Ms. Choban was praised for her ability, her high marks in annual audits, and her work on behalf of the taxpayers. She was described as the steady hand in the county’s nances and was praised for her loyalty and dedication. “It’s overwhelming and I really appreciate this honor,” Ms. Choban said afterward. She grew up in Glades County and developed an interest in nances and local governments early on. She admitted that nances are the biggest challenge when working for such a small county as Glades County. She plans to spend a lot of time with her grandchildren and do things when she wants to do them during retirement. Ms. Choban called the job an honor and a privilege. She worked her way up through the ranks after she was hired in 1977 by then Clerk of the Court Jerry Beck. She was promoted twice, most recently in 1997 to Chief Clerk and Finance Director of Glades County. Chairman Butch Jones said Ms. Choban was always willing to assist him with information and was willing to work long hours during the annual budget workshops. Clerk of the Courts, Joe Flint named Nanc y Dean as the New Finance Director for the county. She comes to Glades County from the private sector. Sandra Brown will replace Ms. Choban as Chief Clerk. Post online or send it in!Editor’s note: Readers are invited to post their comments for this column on the Glades County Democrat web site. Go to www.newszap.com, click on “Glades County.” On the Glades County page, click on “Local issues post your opinion,” to comment on a current discussion thread or start a new one. You may also leave comments on the Glades County Democrat page on Facebook or email your comments to gcdnews@newszap.com. Comments on all issues of local interest are welcome. Some of the topics currently under discussion include the following:Drive Park The drive park that is proposed on the old Oxbow Golf Course is on the south side of the river. Parts of Glades County are on the south side of the Caloosahatchee because the Corps changed the course of the river slightly when they deepened the center channel and straightened parts of the river for navigation. The river was the original boundary between the counties, but when they changed the river, parts of Glades County wound up on the south side of the river. The river used to be very crooked, so much so that the bridge at LaBelle ran east and west instead of north and south. The old bridge was on a center pillar, like a T. And when they straightened the river, they just turned the bridge so it was north and south. A similar thing happened when the Corps worked on the Kissimmee River. While most of the county is on the west side, part of Glades County is now on the east side of the river. This came to light when some residents in the River Run area asked Okeechobee County to do some work to improve their road and when the Okeechobee County of cials looked at it, they discovered it was not in Okeechobee County. The Drive Park development sounds like it would help the Glades County tax base, but there are some questions about emergency services that have to be addressed. Who will provide re protection? Who will provide ambulance service? If additional re trucks or personnel are needed, will the new development generate enough in taxes to cover the expense? Speak Out The following individuals were arrested on felony or driving under the in uence (DUI) charges by the Glades County Sheri ff's Of ce (OCSO), the Florida Highway P atrol (FHP), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) or the D epartment of Corrections (DOC). Jeremy Lee Goggans, 36, U.S. 441 S.E., Okeechobee, was arrested March 7 on a Glades County warrant charging him with v iolation of probation traf cking in stolen property. He is being held without bond. Sharon Michelle Osceola, 30, Hollywood, was arrested March 11 on a charge of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. Her bond was set at $5,000. This column lists arrests and not convictions, unless otherwise stated. Anyone listed here who is later found innocent or has had the charges against them dropped is welcome to inform this newspaper. The information will be con rmed and printed. A rrest Report The Glades County Sheriff’s Of ce investigated reports of the following crimes last week: BURGLARY Clubhouse Drive in Lakeport Avenue F in Moore Haven FRAUD Chaparral Slough Road in Moore Haven THEFT S.R. 78 E. in Buckhead Ridge GCSO Investigations Who speaks up for local abused, neglected and abandoned children? Guardian ad Litem volunteers are needed in both Hendry and Glades Counties to advocate and give each child a voice in his own future. Two upcoming, 1-hr. orientations are scheduled to enable anyone interested to learn about the exact duties and time required— Tuesday, March 20, from 3-4 p.m. and Thursday, March 29, from 3-4 p.m. Volunteers must be Florida residents, at least 21 years old, and have 8-10 hours monthly to volunteer on their own time supported by staff. No legal background is required. Free April Saturday training is scheduled. Attending a one-hour orientation is required to be considered for training, but the interested public is welcome! Call Angela Boykin at 863-674-4190 to attend, or for more information about volunteering. Also, see www.guardianadlitem.org or www.voicesforkids.org. To you, it’s just one hour. To a child, who needs a voice, it’s an hour that could change his life. Guardian ad Litem orientation planned HATS ON! No it’s not Kentucky Derby time—it’s Membership Tea time for Glades County Woman’s Club. Don your very wildest hat, (check out yard sales and Beall’s Outlet) and join members, prospective members and other guests who would like to know what GCWC is all about, on Saturday, March 24, at 2 p.m., at the home of Anne Coffey on River Road. You are even encouraged to wear a long dress, members were told at their regular meeting last week. As there are members from Palmdale, Ortona and Lakeport, a discussion was held reference holding a club meeting in those communities at least once during the club year. Also ideas were tossed around reference fund-raisers by the Club to bene t needs in each community. This would be in addition to scholarships already funded. President Kandi Snow reminded the group that new members will be initiated at the Membership Tea, and their sponsoring club member should be sure to attend. Also, she reminded everyone that the Club is holding a “House Shower” for the Westergaard House, their usual meeting place. Members will receive an emailed list of needed items. As some clauses in the club’s constitution are outdated or need clari cation, Donna Storter-Long was appointed to present needed changes. Each Article was carefully considered, and a unanimous vote approved the desired changes. Thanks to Julie Wigton, who did this tiresome job several years ago. All members agreed that, hopefully, this is the last time it has to be done for many years to come! Barbara Brown, chairman of the recent fashion show and luncheon, reported that it was the best the club has had in several years. Support of the community and M R V Resort deserve a big “Thank You” for helping with the fund raiser for college scholarships. Not only was money raised, but donated gifts made the event a lot of fun, according to attendees. A scholarship committee is working on amending or changing the requirements for GCWC applications of Glades County High School graduating seniors. Diana Tillery, chairman of the scholarship committee, noted that this will apply to the next school year, as students already have the requirements for this year. It was also suggested that a member of Glades County Woman’s Club who wants to further her education, be considered for assistance. Several members have completed masters or bachelor programs and even help with the cost of their books would have been appreciated. Action on scholarships for GCWC members was tabled until a later date. Site and caterer for the installation dinner was tabled until the April meeting. A YSO, River Jrs. Soccer Club join forcesBY JUAN LOPEZ jlopez@newszap.comIt has been a busy past few weeks for the Clewiston Recreation Department as teams and elds prepare for the start of the spring sports season. By the end of the season, the area will have hosted teams from around the Lake Okeechobee area, including teams from Moore Haven, Belle Glade and Big Cypress. Opening Day festivities will begin at 2 p.m. on March 18 at Field 3 of the Sugarland Sports Park. City of cials will be present for the opening ceremony, with one throwing out the rst pitch of the season. Games will start the following day, March 19, and will break for FCAT week. After FCAT week, the season will continue, with the end scheduled for May 18. The schedule was designed to lessen the stress on players and students as they take on the FCAT. The nal day of May 18 was chosen so that everyone is available for graduation celebrations and award ceremonies. Clewiston Recreation Director Lance Ramer and his staff have been working hard preparing for the season and will be hosting 37 teams with over 400 local children participating. "There aren't as many teams and players participating as there were last year and that does happen," said Ramer. "What we do have are several new sponsors for this year and we are happy about that." Ramer is excited about the level of participation from the community. Several out of town teams will again be joining in the season play. Last year's season saw teams from Belle Glade, Big Cypress, and Moore Haven joining in. This y ear will be no different. "We reached out to them and will be happy to host their teams so that everyone can have a good time," said Ramer. Continuing in the vein of making sure that everyone is able to have a good time at Sugarland Sports Park, Ramer also announced that the Clewiston AYSO Soccer League is joining force w ith the River Juniors Soccer League. "The decision was made last Wednesday with representatives from both organizations meeting at the youth center," said Ramer. "It is going to be great partnership." The partnership allows everyone, including the Recreation Department, to maximize the resources that they have at hand. The joining of forces, as it is called, will share not only resources but equipment, volunteers, coaches, administrative duties, and eld time. "We realized that soccer is growing to the point where it is surpassing baseball in size and there are a nite amount of resources and eld time with only three elds," said Ramer. The plan is for the River Jr. teams to join in the AYSO games during the season, with them participating in weekend tournaments. After the season is done, both leagues can participate in more challenging leagues and Spanish leagues that play in the area. For Ramer this decision serves the community. "This will work for everyone involved and will increase what kids can participate in." They breed in open areas in most of the Northern United States, Canada, and Alaska and winter in the Southern states including Florida and the East Coast as well as Mexico and Central America. These gregarious birds frequently gather in ocks. This medium-sized sparrow has a dark-streaked brown back, whitish underparts with brown or blackish breast and ank streaking. It has a short tail, small head, and often has yellow near the beak or above the eye. They have a pale crown strip and a brown cheek-patch. Their song begins with two to three chip notes, followed by two buzzy trills, “ti, ti, ti, tseeeeeee, tisoooo,” while their ight call is a thin “stip.” Savannah Sparrows walk along the ground foraging for food. During the summer breeding season, they eat insects, snails, and spiders. In the winter, their diet is mainly seeds from grasses, but they may eat crustaceans in coastal areas. The oldest recorded wild Savannah Sparrow was at least six years, 10 months old. On their summer breeding grounds, females will build a nest two to three inches across. This nest, made from woven grasses, is built in one to three days in natural depressions that are ush with the ground or in grassy tussocks. She will lay two to six pale greenish-blue to off-white eggs marked and occasionally wreathed in brown. For 10-13 days, both parents incubate the eggs with the female sitting on the eggs for 85 percent of the time. Both parents rear the young until they edge at seven to 14 days. A female must gather 10 times her weight in food for herself and her young until they edge. Female sparrows are known for their distractive displays of spreading their wings and tail in order to protect their nest from intruders. Savannah Sparrows are reported in inland Florida from November through April. During the March 28-31 Big “O” Birding Festival, the Savannah Sparrow will be one of the birds that photographers and birders hope to see during their trips to area birding hot spots in Hendry and Glades County including Lake Okeechobee. The event will also offer workshops and programs at the Port LaBelle Inn as well as a silent auction, photo contest, and displays by local photographers. For information go to www.bigobirdingfestival.com, e-mail bigobirding2012@gmail.com or phone the LaBelle Chamber at 863-675-0125. You are invited to join Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers for birding trips to STA5 located 20 miles south of Clewiston. How to Save During a CrisisBY JACKIE MILLER, EVANGELIST First Christian ChurchRecently, the President proposed several different measures to help conserve fuel and relieve the energy crisis that is facing our nation. Among those were, “in ate your tires and buy smaller fuel-saving cars.” Congress has several more measures under consideration, more suggestions, and perhaps some regulations are on the way as America is in its worst shape nancially since the Depression. As Christians, we should be more than willing to show a little self-control and try to do our part in saving energy. Here are a few more suggestions to help your save fuel and alleviate the energy shortage: 1. Everyone is urged to turn off their TV and their lights and go to bed early Saturday night, in order to arise Sunday morning refreshed and ready to gather for worship and study. 2. Turn off the TV and turn on a lamp to prov ide a good lighting for more Bible Study in your home. A color TV uses six times the amount of electricity that a hundred-watt light bulb does. 3. Be actively involved at each Church Service. The person who has a mouth actively and heartily singing with each song and a mind actively inv olved in concentrating on the things being said burns up more calories, and therefore is warmer. 4. Whether at home or at church, turn off all lights that have been left on unnecessarily. 5. Lets all work to ll the church. A lled building requires less fuel to heat than one just halffull. As we follow these suggestions we will save fuel, as well as reaping many other results which are perhaps even more signi cant. Things like: souls being saved and escaping Hell; people nding the abundant life that Jesus came to give; marriages being saved; families being knit-together; crime decreasing; less child, sexual and drug abuse; and the list could go on and on. But, I think the point is made!Dog Day MemoriesBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchI was going through some old photos on my computer and found some buried treasure. Actually, they were pictures of my dog Pepper when w e were on vacation in Georgia. I used to nd it amusing that many pets and pet owners start to look and act alike after a certain amount of time. I recently came face to face with the reality that although my dog and I don’t share some of the same physical attributes, we do have some of the same personality quirks. On that vacation, I sent my young and agile nephew down a steep bank to retrieve a watermelon left in the ice cold mountain stream, and Pepper decided to follow him. I grabbed the watermelon as it was lifted up and then gave a hand to help my nephew up. Pepper tried to go up the steep bank, but didn’t make it. Then she tried swimming across the stream, but the current keep sweeping her further downstream. Seeing my dog struggling, I called to her, but she didn’t respond. So, I went down the bank into the water to help her. She was so caught up in her situation that she still didn’t come to my calls. She had already tried to go up the bank and had failed. I was wading in water that she would have to swim in to get to me. She was trying to do it on her own, and did not trust to go into the deep for me to help her out. Running out of options, she nally got close enough that I was able to get a hold of her and give her a boost up the bank. Where she had failed before on her own efforts, she was successful when she let her master help her up. Upon re ection, I saw myself in her actions in my relationship with my Master. Often when I get in a jam or a tough situation, I try to get out of it all by myself with my own efforts. I don’t always use all of the resources or people God has made available to help me up and out. I can imagine God’s frustration in calling to me, reaching out to me, trying to show me the way out from His higher perspective, while I struggle in the currents that are rushing at me, threatening to sweep me away. Knowing my relief and joy with Pepper, I can imagine His relief and joy when I nally let go and let God, and use those resources and people He has blessed me with to help lift me up to higher ground. Lord, help me to not be so caught up in my situation that I don’t respond to Your voice. Help me to remember that I’m not alone and that I don’t need to do it all myself.Bad Beginnings Can Have Good EndingsBY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchThis weekend includes Saint Patrick’s Day. Some of the history that is known about this person and celebrated by the Irish among many peoples and nations is worth remembrance. It seems Patrick made two trips to Ireland; rst as a captive and slave, then as an evangelist and missionary. That takes some doing! Imagine, if you will, being torn from your homeland, enslaved, doing forced labor among an alien people. People who have bad experiences in foreign countries never seem to want to go back. Yet Patrick saw something among the people who enslaved him that made it worth going back. Escaping and returning home, he became a Christian and was moved to return to his former captors. He exempli es the gospel imperative that we are called to love our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). He may have seen beyond the everyday treatment he received, perhaps he noticed kindness under difcult circumstances, maybe not all captors were likely to mistreat their captives. Patrick must have noticed qualities of kindness or goodness even at the worst of moments? Whatever it was, he returned and had a greater impact for good rather than evil. God uses even the worst of moments to bring about something of in nite good. John’s gospel tells us Nathaniel who asks Philip when he is told that the messiah has been found and Nathaniel wants to know “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” (John 1:46). The answer is simply “Come and see.” (ibid). Does anything good come out of bad situations? Saint Patrick, Philip, and thousands of others can look at how things turned out even after the bad beginning. Patrick chose to “turn the other cheek,” to forgive, to look for that image of God in even those who would not have seen it themselves; the good outcome from a bad beginning was possible because he took a Godly perspective on things and not one always common among people. I have found things to be possible among people of faith because they have another perspective on things: God’s perspective. I’ve observed that when bad times hit, people usually take one of three paths. They become cynical, they become superstitious, or those with a background of faith look where God is at work in a dif cult situation. These are the people that survive and do the best; knowing that they are not abandoned or isolated and that their faith will not be betrayed. Sometimes it takes returning kindness for evil, going the second mile with someone who is difcult, turning the other cheek, ignoring the insult, avoiding the confrontation when provoked; but these are the qualities that allow God to enter the picture and change it. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Phone Discounts Available to CenturyLink Customers The Florida Public Service Commission designated CenturyLink as an Eligible Telecommunications Carrier within its service area for universal service purposes. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 18 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 15, 2012 I know I keep telling you that the shing here on Okeechobee is the best but it keeps getting better every week. My clients caught several big bass this past week that were over seven pounds, including a monster ten pound sh. The number of bass that we have been catching has also been awesome; forty sh days have been pretty common. Not sure when this bass shing frenzy will end but now would be a great time to come shing on Lake Okeechobee. The live bait bite with wild shiners continues to be the best way to go but I did have a couple different clients catch bass over eight pounds on arti cial lures last week. The bass still seem to be on the outside grass line closest to open water this past week but I have also seen some schooling bass out in the open water. All of the bass seem to be about two to three weeks ahead of what they are usually doing this time of the year and I think the mild winter and warm water temperatures have a lot to do with it. I have still been catching sh from Cochran's Pass to Long Point but all on the outside grass line. If live bait is your favorite way to catch bass, then you will need about six dozen to last you until noon. I have been catching more bass in the morning on live bait but bigger ones are coming in the afternoon. This also holds true for the arti cial bite with the big bass being caught later in the morning or afternoon. The jig has been my go to bait for bass this past week with the Charlie's Worms Zipper Dipper being my second choice, junebug is still my color choice for the Zipper Dippers. I have also caught a few bass on spinner baits and some of the other guides have been doing really well on them, again along the outside grass line seems to be the place to be. I have been targeting the base of bulrush patches to catch most of the bass I have been catching on arti cial lures. Areas like the shoal, east wall, Rita Island, and Long Point have all been productive areas. The w ind has been our deciding factor as to where to sh. If the wind blows too much dirty water into an area, then the bass are a lot harder to catch. As we approach April, the bluegill should begin bedding and the shing should be awesome this year with all the right conditions. I know of a few guides already catching them on crickets. So, it should only get better in the next few weeks. I have started hearing great news out of the Florida Keys about the tarpon and, as most know, I guide for them from mid April through June. This season should start a little earlier with the water temperatures up and the shing should be off the hook. Until next time good luck, tight lines, and I hope to see everyone on the water soon.Capt. Mark King is a full time guide out of Roland Martin’s Marina and Resort in Clewiston. Give him a call at 863-677-0983 or go to www. markking shing.com or www.tarponinthekeys. com to book a trip. "They have not completed the job and one default is AEM, hired sub contractors w ithout prior approval of the County," he explained. He said there were de ciencies in the work that must be corrected. He told commissioners the dispute could lead to litigation. Work was to be complete on Nov. 27 and the contract included a $500 per day liquidation damages clause for Glades County. "My goal is to get the project nished and not cost the county one penny more for the w ork," he added. Commissioner Russell Echols said he w anted to continue the work to maintain access to Lake Okeechobee. Commissioner Paul Beck said the contractor was still on site and that survey work is also being done by the county consultant. That could be completed in the next week. Mr. Beck said he'd like to coax the contractor into completing the contract. Another issue is permit requirements from the Water Management District. The sub contractors hired were not approved by the county and they have alerted the county they have not been paid, according to statements made at the meeting. "There are pretty strong allegations and facts here," Commissioner Donna Storter Long said. She urged that the project be completed. There is a bond on the job and if the contractor defaults, commissioners are con dent they will have avenues to have the project completed. In other actions the commission approved a proposal by Ben Few and Associates to handle risk management consulting and management services for the county.
