Some of the topics currently under discussion include the following:Corps releasing water from lake When the lake is high and there is a hurricane coming, and the water managers decide to let as much water out as they can because they are worried that the dike will break if there is too much water when the storm hits, then the people in Lee County complain that they don’t want the “dirty w ater” from the lake going into the Caloosahatchee. But when the lake is low and the Caloosahatchee is starting to have salt w ater intrusion, then they expect the water managers to send water from the lake into the river to help them. They can’t have it both ways. Either let the water go into the Caloosahatchee year round or else never send it that way. Nature did not intend the Caloosahatchee to directly connect to Lake Okeechobee. Nature intended the river to go dry during the winter season.Dogs in the trash Anyone who has a big dog should have a fenced yard. It’s crazy to have a dog that needs to be able to run around and get some exercise unless you fence your yard. Every day I see dogs and cats killed on the highway. I realize you can’t do much about cats, except get them xed so they don’t have the urge to wander, but if you spay or neuter your dog and keep it in a fenced yard, usually it will stay put. Plus it will protect y our house.Bicycles In response to the comment about the bicyclists, with the high price of gasoline more and more people are going to be riding bikes. Those who ride bikes need to make sure they wear light colored clothing so they can be seen more easily and that they have re ectors on their bicycles. Lights are even better. There are lots of light-weight battery operated lights available. It’s not like the old-fashioned bicycle lights that you had to work really hard to get the wheel to turn to generate power to the light. Also, learn the rules of the road. A person on a bicycle should ride in the same direction as the trafc and stay as far to the right as possible. A person walking along a road should walk against the traf c and also stay as far to the right as possible. Drivers should be watchful for bicycles. Even if it is not your fault, an accident will certainly ruin your day.Drive Park A plan proposes building a “drive park” for automotive enthusiasts including two driving tracks. Members will have options of building a garage to work on and store their vehicles, building a residence with similar garages or just coming to meet with other members to compete in auto competitions. To succeed in changing the land zoning, the proposal would need an amendment to the Glades County Comprehensive Plan and a change to county ordinance 91-1 to change land use regulations in Glades County. Two governmental public meetings are scheduled for March 13, and April 10 at the County Courthouse in Moore Haven. Nearby residents are worried about the affect of noise, fumes and traf c should the proposed driving park be approved by Glades County zoning of cials and county commissioners. A zoning hearing will be held at Glades County courthouse in Moore Haven Tuesday, March 13, at 5:05 p.m. to consider an amendment to the Glades Comprehensive Plan to allow the new use. The Glades County Commission will meet on Tuesday April 10, at 9 a.m. to consider the proposals after the zoning hearing. Maybe the citizens of Glades County should attend these meetings. Remember, even if this is not in your neighborhood, the county services may not be available when you need them. The Glades county EMS is stretched to it’s limits now. LOW COST VACCINATION CLINICS 3 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 1, 2012 Who is a Christian?BY JACKIE MILLER, EVANGELIST First Christian ChurchIn recent weeks there has been a national controversy over the question, “Just Who Is A Christian?” Everyone is afraid to give a clear-cut, de nite, and scriptural answer to this question. This is because of all of the “human tradition” that has ooded into many so-called “churches.” Jesus said, “In vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrine the traditions of men.” Again He said, “He that rejecteth me and receiveth not My Word hath one that judgeth him, the Word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.” As to how one becomes a Christian, just read the “Great Commission” in Matthew 28:18-20 and Mark 16:15-16, and further read the Apostle Peter’s answer on Pentecost to those who asked, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” These scriptures teach that one must Hear and Believe the Gospel (Good News), that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and arose the third day and that He has all authority in Heaven and Earth and that He has ascended on high where He is both Lord and Christ. Those who Hear and Believe this are told to “Repent and be baptized (immersed) in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins to receive the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38). The Lord adds these to His one and only Church (Acts 2:47). This local church is one that continues steadfastly in the apostles doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayers (Acts 2:47). Any question that one may have about a particular teaching on any subject can be found in the New Testament, since the Church is founded on “the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the Chief Cornerstone.” The only name given by God for us to wear is the name “Christian” (Acts 11:26). Since many groups do not follow the New Testament, but human tradition, they are full of people who have not been converted to Christ in the rst place, and do not follow Christ’s Teachings in the second place. It really is not all that complicated. Jesus said, “The blind will follow the blind, and both will fall into the ditch.” We at First Christian Church are trying to get people out of the ditch of “human tradition” and win them to simple “New Testament Christianity.” We want to see the unity that Jesus prayed for (John 17:20-21) and the Apostle Paul plead for (I Cor. 1:10-13).Butter y LessonsBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchA man found a butter y cocoon and noticed a small opening appearing. He sat and watched as the butter y struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further. The man, wanting to help the butter y, took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butter y emerged easily. The man continued to watch the butter y because he expected at any moment the butter y would ap its wings and y away. It didn’t happen. In fact, the butter y spent the rest of its life crawling around with shriveled wings and was never able to y. What the man did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butter y to get through the tiny opening were God’s way of forcing uid from the body of the butter y into its wings so that it would be ready for ight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives in order to be strong enough to y. In the 15 plus years I have been raising butteries for release on Easter Sunday, I have learned much and have gotten the timing down. I plan for the butter ies to emerge the week before Easter, so each child who comes to church can release a butter y which has come out of a cocoon as a symbolic remembrance of Christ coming out of the tomb. This year is no different, and I will be ordering butter ies soon. Timing is everything to get a successful coming out experience. You receive the tiny caterpillars and put them in a feeding cup. They eat for about seven to 10 days, are in the chrysalis for seven to 10 days, and then emerge as butter ies. One year, following my timing schedule, I had plans for over 100 butter ies to emerge. None did. My timing was the same, but as of the Saturday before Easter, not one butter y had emerged. It didn’t look like a mass butter y release was going to happen that year. But God had other plans. By sunrise on Easter morning, one butter y had emerged. During the worship services, enough butter ies came out that we were able to have a release afterwards. That year was unique and special in that being newly out of their cocoons, the butter ies stayed on people’s ngers while they pumped their wings to get ready to y. A number of people were able to take a chrysalis home and celebrate “resurrection” again as their butter ies emerged in the days following Easter. Blessings owed. Let’s see: John’s timing: maybe 1. God’s timing: a hundredfold with addition blessings. There’s got to be a lesson in there somewhere.Scriptures; Living, EvolvingBY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchThe Bible has been criticized for being “chauvinistic” – excessively attached to one point of view over others. For example, in the case of marriage, writings suggest that males are predominant (e.g. 1 Corinthians 7, 1 Peter 3). Scriptures speak of the world known in their day. We tend to forget that those who wrote were divinely inspired were also people of their own times. They didn’t ride in automobiles, didn’t know about dental care, didn’t have cell-phones, lived in a world where slavery was common, were not likely to regard their wives as equal partners in marriage, had no systems of vaccinations for devastating illnesses, and on and on. Over time, and with God’s revelation, it becomes evident that we do not live as did our spiritual ancestors. We build on their heritage and inspired gifts; we bring the gifts of what God reveals to us in our own times. Nobody has surpassed Saint Paul’s hymn to love (1 Corinthians 13) which speaks to the heart of marriage and what it takes to make it succeed; or that, “they are no longer two but one (Mark 10:9)” with no mention about who is to be dominant or who is to submit. The Scriptures are the living word of God; and, like all living things, they will evolve, grow, incorporate what has come to us from God as we come to know Him a little better each passing generation. My earthly father was limited in the hours he could spend at home, unhappy when I didn’t do as well in school as he would have liked, protective in public-chiding in private, often too tired to go over my homework at a very elementary level. Later, I realized the stresses and strains of his world; he did a pretty good job of providing, parenting, protecting, and nurturing. I grew up. He was a product of his day and age; he stuck to his values and they carried him through. They laid the foundations for my life; not without changes or with the blessings of the advantages that my world has and his lacked. Likewise, as I think about those who laid our spiritual foundations; they were wonderful and great people, literally and guratively saints. We build on their foundations; we do things differently, we evolve and grow. As parents are proud of their children for doing better than they did; I can’t help believe that those who gave us our spiritual heritage would be proud of us when we move forward and work to make our world better than theirs. I want my child to do better than I was able to do; I am a product of my own day and age, and who am I to hold back or think that I always know best. Perhaps one of God’s greatest gifts is that we move forward, change, grow, evolve. His word, written and revealed in us, will one day lead to that kingdom where all things are perfected and made whole. RELIGION COLUMNS Jackie Miller Sam S. Thomas John Hicks “My earthly father was limited in the hours he could spend at home, unhappy when I didn’t do as well in school as he would have liked, protective in public-chiding in private, often too tired to go over my homework at a very elementary level. Later, I realized the stresses and strains of his world.”Rev. Sam Thomas

OBITUARIES BY MARK KINGAs the month of February ies by here on Lake Okeechobee, the bass shing has been best described as “awesome.” Catching 30 to 40 bass a day on wild shiners is no problem, and the arti cial bite has been almost as good. Most of the bass seem to be still on the outside grass close to the main lake, with a few bass in different areas moving in to spawn and then moving right back out to the outside. My clients have been having the time of there lives catching bass. I can’t even begin to tell you how many have caught the largest bass they have ever seen in their lives right here on the lake. I have been targeting the outside grass line from Cochran’s Pass to Pelican Bay with the deciding factor being the wind. Areas like the East Wall, Ritta Island, and Long Point have been really good places to sh. When shing with the shiners try to pick a point out on the main lake and anchor up, be sure to take a lot of bait because you will use up at least a dozen an hour if not more. The arti cial bite has been a little slow some days and really good others. I have been using the Charlie’s Worms Zipper Dipper and shing it slow like a worm along the outside grass line and back in, about a good pitch into the grass. I have also caught bass really well on a one ounce Medlock jig shed in most of the same areas that I’m shing wild shiners. This jig has a double weed guard that resists getting caught up in the weeds and the one ounce size has just the right fall. You will need to sh a trailer on this jig to make it work right, the bigger the better. When the wind is blowing a spinnerbait has been working just outside the grass on the main lake but if the wind blows too hard the water dirties up to much to sh a spinnerbait. I just can’t tell you in words how great Lake Okeechobee is shing right now, if you have ever had the desire to come to South Florida bass shing then now would be the time to make it happen. The crappie shing is still hit and miss with limits being pretty hard to catch right now. I have heard of a few bluegills being caught but it will be another month or so before it really kicks in. As most folks know I guide in the Florida Keys for tarpon during the season from mid April through June so if anyone is looking to catch a giant tarpon get a hold of me soon as dates are lling up quick. I will also be heading to the Venice-Louisiana area this fall for red sh season and will also start booking trips for big red sh on y and conventional tackle. Fishing is my life and if you would like a trip of a lifetime just give me a call and I can make it happen. Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report BY PAT DOBBINS Hendry/Glades Health Departments There is a public health system in each community. The public health system does not mean county health departments alone. The public health system is de ned as the wide range of public, private, and voluntary organizations such as governmental agencies, school systems, health care providers, hospitals, law enforcement, community-based organizations, local associations, businesses, and individuals. The function of this broad system framework is to work together collectively to improve the health of the community. The following diagram shows how we are all connected to each other within the local public health system: Some speci c responsibilities of the entire public health system are to: Prevent epidemics and the spread of disease Protect against environmental hazards and prevent injuries Promote and encourage healthy behaviors Assure the quality and accessibility of health services Respond to disasters and assist communities in recovery The core functions of the public health system include: Assessment: Making regular, systematic collection, assembly, analysis and distribution of information on the health of the community, including statistics on health status, community health needs, and epidemiological and other studies of health problems. Policy development: Using the scienti c knowledge to assist in the decision-making about public health and taking a strategic approach to leadership for public health policy. Assurance: Engaging policy-makers, community partners, businesses, and the public to help determine what level of services are needed in the community. There are ten essential public health services and they are derived from the speci c responsibilities and core functions which include: Monitoring health status within the community Diagnosing and investigating health problems and health hazards Informing, educating, and empowering people about health issues Mobilizing community partnerships to identify and solve health problems Develop policies and plans that support individual and community health Enforcing laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety Linking people to needed personal health services Assuring a competent public health and personal health care workforce Evaluating the effectiveness, accessibility and quality of health services Conducting research for innovative solutions to health problems The Public Health Wheel best illustrates the relationship among core functions, speci c responsibilities and the ten essential public health services. There will always be challenges in rural communities. If everyone works collectively as a community and strengthens partnerships, they can make improvements to the overall health and safety of their communities! W hat is a Public Health System? 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 7 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 1, 2012 An environmental monitoring program to measure the effectiveness of the state-federal Kissimmee River Restoration Project has revealed a promising increase in wading birds and waterfowl, thriving aquatic invertebrates and improvements in water quality. “The abundant wildlife now seen along the Kissimmee is a powerful indicator of the bene ts of long-term investments in restoration,” said South Florida Water Management District (SFW MD) Executive Director Melissa Meeker. “The District’s documentation of these improvements provides us and our restoration partners—as well as the public—with critical insights into the ecosystem’s ongoing recovery.” Environmental monitoring conducted since completion of the rst phase of construction in 2001 has shown improvements in aquatic life, reductions in accumulated bottom sediments, reestablishment of oodplain wetlands and an increase in waterfowl and wading birds. Among the observations: The number of wading birds observed increased by 64 percent. Three species long absent from the river are now documented regularly. Shorebird species commonly observed jumped from 2 to 11. Waterfowl sightings increased dramatically—by 29 times compared to pre-restoration sightings. In addition, dissolved oxygen levels in the river have improved, which is critical for the long-term survival of sh and other aquatic organisms. Wetland vegetation, which once covered only 37 percent of the Phase I restoration area prior to construction, has fully achieved the restoration target of 80 percent coverage. In addition to an increase in wading birds, shorebirds and waterfowl, the numbers of wetland-dependent marsh birds and songbirds have also increased since restoration began in 2001. These results suggest that after construction is complete in 2014 and hydrologic conditions are fully restored in 2015, the region is on track to achieve its goal of restored ecological integrity in the Kissimmee River and its oodplain. Ecological monitoring is scheduled to continue for at least ve years after project completion to guide management of the ood control system and evaluate the ultimate success of the restoration project. The Kissimmee Basin is the headwaters of Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades. The deadline for submitting data online at www.birdcount.org or for mailed entries is March 5. The nal results will be posted in April. Some of the Feb. 23 online result reported Clewiston as #8 for reporting 93,497 individual birds. Some other Top Ten tallies were LaBelle #1 with 60 Painted Buntings and #2 with 29 Indigo Buntings. Okeechobee w as #6 with 39 Painted Buntings being reported. Clewiston was #1 for 59,607 American Coots and 27 Purple Swamphens. Clewiston was #8 with 7 Indigo Buntings and placed #3 for reporting 764 w intering American White Pelicans which is a bird of least concern. The American White Pelican is one of the largest North American birds. It is a large, heavy, w hite waterbird with a wingspan as great as nine and a half feet. The wings are long and broad with black wing tips. Its short legs and webbed feet are reddish-orange or pink. They have a long reddish-orange or pink bill w ith a pouch that can hold up to three gallons of w ater. Juvenile American White Pelicans are similar to the adults, but have dirty grayish markings on the head and back. They are usually silent, but nestlings make w hining grunts for food and adults have low hoarse display calls. They do not dive for sh, but scoop up prey which consists mainly of sh, cray sh, tadpoles, and salamanders. They are often seen shing in groups where they will swim on top of the water and make a circle in order to concentrate sh. They will dip their heads under water simultaneously to catch the sh. In the summer, adult American White Pelicans breed in colonies in the interior of Western Canada and the Northwestern United States where they build nests on the ground that they rim with dirt, sticks, and other debris. The female lays one to three eggs which both parents incubate with their large webbed feet. The eggs hatch in about a month. Both parents take care of the young. The strongest chicks leave the nest and join a pod or crche of young pelicans when they are 17-28 days old. The young edge at about 10 weeks of age. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 12 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 1, 2012 Mr. Ahern became active in the community in 1973 rst joining Glades County Youth Livestock and then the Glades County Volunteer Fire Department. John was elected to the Moore Haven City Council in 1974 at the age of 19 and selected as Mayor at the age of 20. Over the years Mr. Ahern has served on many boards: Glades Economic Development Council, Glades Utility Service, Olde Cypress Community Bank, Glades County Enterprise Development Authority, Glades County Chamber of Commerce, Glades County Fish and Game Club, and the Chalo Nitka Committee. His two favorite boards are still Glades County Youth Livestock, serving about 25 years as its Treasurer and the Moore Haven City Council, serving eighteen y ears as Finance Of cer and Councilman and six years as Mayor. A native of Moore Haven, Mr. Ahern graduated from Moore Haven High School in 1972 and attended Edison Community College before joining his father Robert T. A hern full time in the family business Ahern's Texaco Service. His maternal grandparents J.C. and Emma Swindall started the business in 1936. In 1979 with the passing of his father, John became owner of the family business, which continues today as Ahern's Service Center and Convenience Store owned by John, his wife Laura, daughter Stacy Ahern Carlson, and business partner stepson Jason Griner. Mr. Ahern's biography and photo appear in the 2012 Chalo Nitka program which is available at the EDC of ce at 900 US 27 S (the old Chamber building). T-shirts, with the new 2012 logo, midway tickets, $5 gate bracelets for admission to the festival and discount coupons for the Ranch Rodeo are also available. Midway tickets are $10 a sheet (12 tickets a sheet) in advance but will sell for $1 per ticket at the midway. Unlike years past, the midway will only be open Friday and Saturday, Ms. Whirls said, urging parents and students to get their ride tickets early and get to the fair. "The t-shirts, sponsored by the Seminole Casino at Brighton, are really cool this year," Ms. Whirls said, adding that the tan background is a perfect foil for the new Chalo Nitka logo. As always, anyone wearing a 2012 t-shirt or Seminole Indian attire the day of the festival gets in free of charge.Chalo Nitka Festival March 3: a tradition for 64 yearsOriginally begun as a celebration of the newly "tarred" Main Street (now Ave. J) in Moore Haven, the rst Chalo Nitka Festival was celebrated in 1949 with LaBelle, Pahokee, Belle Glade and Moore Haven High School bands and colorful oats leading a parade down Main Street. Christened the Chalo Nitka Festival, which is Seminole for "Day of the Big Bass," the festival became an annual event, featuring an annual shing tournament saluting the Black Bass, beauty pageants culminating in the Chalo Nitka Queen contest, a parade and of course, the festival itself, which includes carnival rides, arts and crafts and food booths and special exhibits by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, including alligator wrestling, Native American clothing contests, and arts and crafts exhibits. "The Chalo Nitka Festival is really the Glades County Fair, and like fairs in small towns across America, it features homemade food and arts and crafts, carnival rides and beauty queens, but with a special twist, celebrating Glades County's traditional friendship with the Seminole Tribe of Florida," said Glades County Economic Development Council executive director Tracy Whirls. "The early days of the Chalo Nitka Festival coincided with the beginning of the Seminole Tribe's efforts in tourism development. Before the casinos, when the Tribe was just beginning its ranching operations, tourists who saw Seminoles capture alligators for their meat and skins thought the Indians were wrestling the gators and often paid to watch them do it," the EDC director said. "Soon the Seminoles were wrestling alligators and selling their beautiful patchwork clothing, dolls, and specialties like fry bread at roadside attractions throughout the state." Residents of the Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation in northern Glades County soon became an integral part of the annual Chalo Nitka Festival, and their involvement continues today. The EDC director said while many think of the Chalo Nitka festival as the annual event held the rst Saturday in March, the Chalo Nitka Festival is actually the culminating event in a weeklong series centering on the Glades Youth Livestock Show and Sale, which begins the week before. Founded in 1969, the Glades Youth Livestock Association was formed to give the youth of Glades County an opportunity to raise and show farm animals and the community a place to host the annual show and sale and the rodeo which follows each year. "Only in Moore Haven are you likely to see the Chalo Nitka queen cleaning her steer's stall in the Show barn or trading her tiara for a cowboy hat to compete in the barrel races, once the show is over," Ms. Whirls said, adding that among the other popular annual events are the "Kiss the Pig" contest during the Youth Livestock sale, in which local politicians and other celebrities bid for the right to make an opponent "Kiss the Pig," to raise funds for the Moore Haven High School Scholarship Foundation or Project Graduation.Frontier Days RodeoThe Chalo Nitka Festival and Ranch Rodeo kicks off in Moore Haven Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3. Rodeo action begins nightly at 7! Featuring bull riding, barrel racing and the wild cow milkin' contest. Kids 10 and under can enter the calf scramble. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 6 to 12. Five and under it's free with paid adult admission. "Wild animal events prove to be the most popular, not just from a crowd-pleasing standpoint, but also from the perspective of local cowboys and cowgirls," the EDC director said. "Skills involved include hanging on for dear life even after common sense tells you to let go and believing that you can outrun a wild cow." Grown ups can unwind at the adult dance in the Doyle Conner Ag Center Friday and Saturday night, starting at 9 p.m. Must be 18 to attend. Admission is $10 per person and $5 per cooler. IDs will be checked a door. No glass containers, please.Kid’s Day kicks off with Small Fry Fishing ContestThe annual Kid's Day event, slated for Friday, March 2, gets underway with the annual Small Fry Fishing Contest at the Chalo Nitka Park at 8 a.m. Registration for the Small Fry Fishing contest for children ages 1-15 will begin at 8 a.m. Cane poles and bait will be available, however, contestants may bring their own shing gear if they prefer. Early registration is encouraged. Following the shing contest, children's games sponsored by Project Graduation will begin. The games include the egg race, sac k race, bubble gum blowing contest, face painting, hula hoop, limbo and twist contests. Ribbons and prizes will be awarded, and refreshments will be available.Pancakes and a paradeThe 64th annual Chalo Nitka Festival slated for Saturday, March 3, traditionally begins with the pancake breakfast, sponsored b y the Junior Class, at Moore Haven Elementary from 7:30 to 10 a.m. At ten a.m., the parade begins with line up on Riverside Drive, before winding its way up Avenue J. to end near the Chalo Nitka Grounds. Glades County elected of cials, dignitaries representing the Seminole Tribe of Florida, royalty from area festivals, including the Chalo Nitka Queen and her court, will participate in a range of conveyances, ranging from convertibles to swamp buggies, horses to ATVs, golf carts to boats. Craft and food booths open at the Chalo Nitka grounds at 11 a.m., with opening ceremonies slated for 11:30. A variety of live entertainment, from alligator wrestling to clogging, are scheduled throughout the day. FESTIVALContinued From Page 1 By Charles M. MurphySpecial to the Glades County Democrat Congressman Tom Rooney got his rst look at his new District 17 Thursday even though the district lines have yet to be nalized when he visited the area on Feb. 23. Mr. Rooney met with Glades County Of cials and Buckhead Ridge residents for a round table discussion at the Community Center on various issues like gas prices, the sluggish economy, politics in Washington, and foreign policy. Mr. Rooney will move into the new district that will cover parts of Okeechobee and all of Glades County and parts of several other counties which include Highlands, Polk, and Charlotte. Mr. Rooney said he wouldn't be in congress if it weren't for the votes he received in the rural areas in the Republican primary in 2008. He serves as Chairman of the House Livestock and Dairy Committee, and also serves on the Armed Services Committee and the Intelligence Committee. He told the group that he has a self-imposed term limit of eight years. Mr. Rooney said he would like to see more unity in the Republican Party. He said the presidential primary has made the Republican Party a mess. "It's not just the presidential I'm seeing it in the rank and le in lower of ces and with constituents and voters. There is a lot of dissension not only about our nominee but what we want our party to look like moving forward," he explained. Mr. Rooney said the dispute in his party could cost them as he feels they have a good chance to defeat President Obama in November if they put their differences aside. "We're so caught up in our own internal strife that we could let this opportunity slip away," he added. Mr. Rooney recently voted in favor of oil drilling off the Coast of Florida. He said that would lessen American reliance on oil from the Middle East. He said there are plenty of energy resources in America and the country should stand on their own two feet energy wise. On foreign police he explained the situation in Iran is dangerous and it won't get better. He predicted Israel could attack Iran leading to another war. "I don't see that getting bettera lot of oil could be disrupted. If Israel does attack Iran do we have Israel's back? I'd like to think so," he added. Mr. Rooney said he will continue to work to save the Palmdale Post Of ce. He will also ght big government and regulations. Everett Coleman, president of the Buckhead Ridge Community Association said the community was happy to host Congressman Rooney. "I'm elated that he picked us to visit. 19 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 1, 2012 By Eric KoppSpecial to the Glades County DemocratA six-month, multi-agency investigation dubbed ‘Operation Pill Crusher’ culminated with eight arrests on numerous felony charges in both Okeechobee and Glades counties last week. Detectives involved in the operation said they w ere focused on buying prescription medications and during the operation bought oxycodone, xanax and percocet pills. The investigators bought oxycodone pills for $16 to $25 each, and xanax and percocet tablets for $5 to $6 each. “These are the people who actually sell to anyone who has the money to pay—including our children,” said Okeechobee County Sheriff Paul May. Sheriff May went on to explain that about six months ago he contacted Glades County Sheriff Stuart Whiddon about the pill problem and asked if his agency could help the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Of ce (OCSO) with the investigation. “The cooperation between agencies was excellent,” said Sheriff Whiddon. “It’s an ongoing project we have in Glades and Okeechobee counties. Drugs don’t stop at the county line.” Those arrested, their charges and bonds were: Hubert Lee Jenkins, 34, N.W. Fifth St., Okeechobee, was charged with the sale of a controlled substance oxycodone (two counts) and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell oxycodone (two counts). His bond was set at $100,000. Brandon Ray Harper, 21, Cypress St., Okeechobee, was charged with attempted sale of a controlled substance oxycodone and petit theft. His bond was set at $5,500. Wendy Inez Cassidy, 43, N.W. 294th St., Okeechobee, was charged with sale of a controlled substance oxycodone, possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell oxycodone and possession of a rearm by a convicted felon. Her bond was set at $30,000. Courtney Leonard Levingston, 41, S.E. 42nd Trace, Okeechobee, was charged with traf cking a controlled substance oxycodone. His bond was set at $50,000. Helen Elizabeth Grif th, 27, S.E. 43rd St., Okeechobee, was charged with the sale of a controlled substance oxycodone (two counts) and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell oxycodone (two counts). Her bond was set at $80,000. Henry Homer DeBerry, Jr., 69, U.S. 441 S.E., Okeechobee, was charged with the sale of a controlled substance oxycodone and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell oxycodone. His bond was set at $30,000. Jeremy Lloyd Jordan, 33, S.W. Colorado Ave., Port St. Lucie, was arrested on Glades County warrants charging him with the sale of a controlled substance oxycodone and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell oxycodone. His bond was set at $50,000. He was also arrested on Okeechobee County warrants charging him with the sale of a controlled substance oxycodone and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell oxycodone. His bond on those charges was set at $30,000. Cynthia Aponte, 25, S.W. Third Ave., Okeechobee, was charged with traf cking in a controlled substance oxycodone, sale of cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to sell. Her bond was set at $200,000 Other than Jordan and Aponte, all of the arrests were made Wednesday, Feb. 22. St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Of ce records indicate that Jordan was arrested Wednesday night by the U.S. Marshal’s Of ce. Aponte was arrested Thursday morning, Feb. 23, by detectives with the Okeechobee Narcotics Task Force. Investigators are currently holding arrest warrants on three more individuals who are either serving sentences in prison or the Okeechobee County Jail. Under the Florida public records law, the names of those individuals cannot be released until they are actually placed under arrest. When asked why prescription pills are being sold so cheaply in Florida, as compared to states in the North, Florida Department of Law Enforcement Special Agent Shane Pollard said it’s a case of supply and demand. “The supply just isn’t there, so they can sell them at a higher rate,” he said. “Because of la w enforcement activity the prices are starting to go up here.” GCSO part of six month undercover drug investigation
