2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 23, 2012 Public Forum/Speak Out Burn ban I understand the county is now under a burn ban, so it is illegal to start any res outdoors without a special permit from the Division of Forestry. People should also be aware of other things that start res. For example, don’t park a vehicle in tall grass. The heat from the muf er can start a re that w ill destroy your vehicle. And be careful if y ou ride an ATV especially if you have made any “modi cations.” Sparks from ATVs have been blamed for brush res. If you are a smoker, don’t throw your cigarette out the car window when you nish with it. Put it in an ash tray and make sure it is completely out. It has been very dry and it doesn’t take much to start a re that can do a lot of damage. I think the burn ban is a good idea. The freeze we had in January and the lack of rainfall have left much of South Florida very dry. Wild res are a real danger to people and to animals.Dogs in the trash I can appreciate with a county the size of Glades County, it would be tough to be an animal control of cer. If you have a call in Muse and one in Buckhead Ridge just handling two calls could take up the whole day. Does the county have an animal shelter? Where is it? Some shelters put cages out front so folks who catch strays can drop them off. For Buckhead folks, you can take strays and unwanted dogs to the Humane Society Pet/Rescue shelter on Highway 98 in Okeechobee. That is a no-kill shelter so they w ill try to nd a home for the dog. They also w ork with Glades Correction on the SPIN program where the inmates help train the dogs with housebreaking and basic obedience so it is easier to nd adoptive homes for them. There is also a problem in all of the rural counties with people coming over from the coast to dump their unwanted animals here. They think because it is the “country” someone will take it in, or else the animal w ill be able to fend for itself. Doing this is condemning the animal to starve to death or else be eaten by an alligator. Domestic dogs and cats cannot take care of themselves in the wild. And people who live in rural communities already have all the animals they can afford to take care of. Just because they have land does not mean they have the funds to take care of multiple animals. And some people just don’t like dogs and cats, or have allergies, and don’t want any around to begin with. The cops cannot do anything about the dog dumping unless they actually see it happen. But someday the people who do this will be held accountable by a higher power. I was really surprised to nd out that the animal control of cer job is only part time and the same person was in charge of code enforcement. With a county as large as Glades County, that is a lot to ask of one person. No wonder residents have been unhappy about the response when they call with a dog complaint. It is not the county employee’s fault if they are not allowed to work enough hours to get the job done.Wildlife corridor The article in last week’s paper “Members of Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition Trek Through Region to Raise Awareness” was very interesting. I hope they can save enough of the state’s wild land to preserve the habitat for the wildlife we still have. Think of all the species we have already allowed to go extinct. We need to preserve what we still have so that our children and grandchildren may see eagles, deer, wading birds and sandhill cranes in their own natural habitat, and not just in picture books.Corps releasing water from lake When are the water managers going to come up with a better solution for the Calooshatchee than pumping water from Lake Okeechobee? I understand the river has a saltwater intrusion problem. So they take fresh water from the lake to help the river. But the lake is our water supply for those who live around the lake and the backup water supply for the coast. It is already low and we won’t get any signi cant rainfall until June. There is a lot of the dry season to get through before there is any relief. They talk about putting reservoirs north of the Caloosahatchee to have some water in reserve to put into the river during the dry season. But they haven’t done it. This problem has been going on for years and years and they just talk about it. Ommission Leads to CommissionBY JACKIE MILLER, EVANGELIST First Christian ChurchThere is a maxim that we all need to acknowledge: “When you’re not doing what you’re supposed to be doing, it leads you to do things that y ou’re not supposed to be doing.” Or: The sins of omission leads to the sins of commission! For example: In 2nd Samuel we read of the exploits of King David. He was experiencing victory after victory over the pagan nations. Before this, when Saul was king, the women began to sing: “Saul has killed his thousands and David his ten thousands.” In 2nd Samuel chapter 11 it says it was springtime when the kings went off to war. But while his soldiers were out ghting the battle, David was napping in the afternoon, and got up in the evening to stroll on the roof of the palace. “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop!” As David strolled he saw Bathsheba, and to make a long story short, he lusted, committed adultery, had Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah, murdered, and thought he had cover up his sin so no one would know. But God knows all things. Nothing is hidden from his view and he was displeased with David. David suffered greatly because of his sins and caused his family to suffer even more. The Bible tells the Christian: “Forsake not the assembly” and says when we do “We trod Jesus under our feet, count His blood as unholy, and do despite to the Spirit of God.” (Heb. 10:24-31). When we fail to obey this command, this sin of omission leads to sins of commission. W e fail to arm ourselves with the Word of God (2 Tim. 2:15). We fail to commune with the Lord, and thus become weak, sickly, and die spiritually (I Cor. 11:23-28; I Cor. 10:16-18). We fail to bring our Tithe and Offering into the storehouse of the Lord and thus become God robbers (Malachi 3:10; I Cor. 9:13-14). We fail to pray with the saints of God and thus lose our defense against Satan and temptation. We begin to use profanity, commit substance abuse, commit sexual immorality, practice idolatry and sins that damn the body, soul, and spirit of man. The sins of omission always lead to the sins of commission. It happens every time without fail! The Fellowship of the UnashamedBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchAn anonymous writer shared what I consider a desirable “shopping list” for leaders in our nation, our communities, our churches, and our lives: “The world needs men and women who cannot be bought; whose word is their bond; who put character above wealth; who possess opinions and a strong will; who are larger than their v ocations; who do not hesitate to take risks; who w ill not lose their individuality in a crowd; who w ill be as honest in small affairs as in greater; w ho will make no compromise with wrong; w hose ambitions are not con ned to their own sel sh desires; who will not say they do it “because everybody else does it;” who are true to their friends through good and bad, in adversity as well as in prosperity; who do not believe that shrewdness, cunning, and hardheadedness are the best qualities for winning success; who are not ashamed or afraid to stand for the truth when it is unpopular; who can say “no” with emphasis, although all the rest of the world says “yes.” We need men and women of integrity. Daniel in the Bible was like that. Daniel was one politician who believed private lives do matter. What a person is in private is what a person really is. If you can’t trust a person privately, you can’t trust them publicly; if you can’t trust them personally, you can’t trust them politically. Daniel was a man of integrity in a shady world; a man of purity in a soiled world; and a man of stability in a shaky world. In that same spirit, a young man from Rwanda was forced by his tribe in 1980 to renounce Christ or face death. He refused to renounce Christ and was murdered on the spot. The night before he had written the following commitment which was found in his room: “I am a part of the fellowship of the Unashamed. I have the Holy Spirit Power. The die has been cast. I have stepped over the line. The decision has been made. I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I won’t look back, let up, slow down, back away, or be still. My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is secure. I am nished and done with low living, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tame visions, mundane talking, chintzy giving, and dwarfed goals. I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotions, or popularity. I don’t have to be right, rst, tops, recognized, praised, regarded, or rewarded. I now live by presence, learn by faith, love by patience, lift by prayer, and labor by power. I cannot be bought, compromised, deterred, lured away, turned back, diluted, or delayed. I will not inch in the face of sacri ce, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I won’t give up, back up, let up, or shut up until I’ve preached up, prayed up, paid up, stored up, and stayed up for the cause of Christ.”Lent: Fully Human Through Discipline and PracticeBY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchYesterday marked the beginning of Lent; the Church season that reminds us that Easter is really around the corner. It is a tradition and a means of showing ourselves something spiritual; that we’re not just subject to whims or desires or emotions. It is about discipline; the kind of discipline that Paul talks about in 1st Corinthians (9:24ff). He speaks of “running the race” everyone runs but only one receives the prize. His admonition is to “run in such a way as to get the prize.” When better in the Church year to prepare for the great “prize” that Easter represents to us; God’s gift of eternal life? The pre-Easter period is a very appropriate time to get ready with the kinds of disciplines runners, or other athletes or those who just want to keep in shape, have to practice. The trial runs, the workouts at the gym, the meals devoted to eating correctly and the efforts to have a healthy lifestyle are all parts of the discipline that leads to really being t. Likewise, there is a spiritual side of it all, too. Getting ready for Easter is taking time out to worship a little more, to do a few extra good deeds, to help another person who is in need, to learn a little more about what it is that is believed and why the faithful believe the things they do. This, then, is running the “spiritual race” and provides the strength and bene ts for the spirit in the same way that exercise and practice provide strength and bene ts for the body. One of the great assets of the Christian religion has been to take our human condition seriously. As a part of God’s creation, He made us physical beings but with skills and reasoning capacities to let us make the most out of life here. We are capable of moderating our instincts or basic passions if we choose to do so and are willing to work at it. Faith is there to help in giving us the best life possible; balancing between the human part and that divine image implanted in each of us. Many of the predicaments where people nd themselves are simply a lack of self-discipline (Ever heard someone say “I can’t help myself” or “That’s just the way I am” or “I’ve tried everything and nothing works?”). The reality is that we can change, can grow, can escape from the things that aggravate us about ourselves; and the Church has set aside a time to help practice. What makes disciples? Discipline! What makes us fully human? To put the less-than-human parts of us in their proper place! Ask any successful person how he or she became a success; the answer is always related to “hard work.” It is no different with the person who has come to a spiritual peace in life or who has the faith it takes to overcome life’s obstacles; spiritual work is hard work too, but it has great and wonderful rewards. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 3 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 23, 2012 RELIGION COLUMNS “The reality is that we can change, can grow, can escape from the things that aggravate us about ourselves.”Rev. BY PAT DOBBINS Hendry/Glades Health Departments Public Health means your health. Most people don’t understand what public health is or how it impacts their daily lives. By de nition, Public Health is the science and practice of protecting and improving the health of a community, as by preventative medicine, health education, control of communicable diseases, application of sanitary measures, and monitoring of environmental hazards. Many people think of the Public Health Department when they need to get immunizations for their children and family, but Public health is a eld geared toward serving others. Public health professionals serve local, national, and international communities. They are leaders who meet the many exciting challenges in protecting the public’s health today and in the future. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention named the ten greatest public health achievements of the 20th century. Ten Great Public Health Achievements -United States, 1900-1999. Vaccination. Eradicates life threatening diseases such as smallpox and polio. Motor-vehicle safety. Reduces death and disability due to unintentional injuries through the formulation of policies designed to protect the safety of the public, such as seat belt and worker safety laws. Safer workplaces and prevents pollution of our air and land through enforcement of regulatory controls and management of hazardous wastes Control and prevention of infectious diseases (Measles, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, etc.). Decline in deaths from coronary heart disease and stroke. Promotes healthy lifestyles to prevent chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Safer and healthier foods. Healthier mothers and babies. Family planning. Educates populations at risk to reduce sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy, and infant mortality. Fluoridation of drinking water and assures our drinking and recreational waters are safe. Recognition of tobacco use as a health hazard Seatbelt laws, u vaccines, and uoride in our drinking water are all achievements of public health. Public health debates are in the news everyday, whether it be the latest outbreak of swine u or the eradication of trans-fats from entire cities. The vision of the Florida Department of Health is to “Promote, protect, and improve the health of all people in Florida” and their mission is “A healthier future for the people of Florida” Stop and think about what Public Health has done for you and the possibilities of what it can do for you in the future. BY ROBERT H. WELLS UFAs a carrier of as many as 100 types of germs, the common house y is hardly as innocuous as its name might suggest. Military personnel know this rsthand, and their need for effective y control has helped University of Florida researchers create an innovative new y control device. Known as the Florida Fly-Baiter, the device is blue — in contrast to the yellow y control devices on the market — and is far more effective, said Phil Koehler, a professor of urban entomology with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Flies can spread diseases including dysentery, typhoid fever and cholera, and they are often the rst pest problem to occur when infrastructure, such as plumbing and electricity, is disrupted due to war or natural disaster, such as hurricanes and tsunamis. Koehler and Roberto Pereira, an IFAS associate research scientist, worked with two UF entomology graduates who are also in the Navy, Joseph Diclaro and Jeff Hertz, to develop the device. A key to making the device effective was the discovery that ies are three times more attracted to the color blue than to yellow and that yellow actually seemed to repel ies. The Department of Defense’s Deployed WarFighter Protection program, which seeks to better protect troops from insect-spread diseases, funded the research. The device works by enticing ies using color, smell, and other attractants. Once at the device, the ies eat poisonous bait that quickly kills them. It does not trap the ies; therefore its usefulness isn’t reduced when it lls up with ies, like many other y traps. Pereira said when testing the device, more than 40,000 ies were killed with one insecticide application. Additional insecticide can be applied as needed. Researchers found the ies’ color preference by using behavioral tests that determined which color a y was most likely to travel toward. Electroretinograms that measured the ies’ eye reaction found the insects responded more to blue as well. The research results are published in the current issue of the Journal of Medical Entomology.Adding to the device’s effectiveness are black stripes covered with insecticide that line its outside. The stripes, tested, and ne-tuned by Hertz, mimic dark crevices ies like to hide in. Diclaro, who is lead author of the study and designed the device, said his time as a U.S. Navy hospital corpsman in Cuba in 1991, when Haitian refugees were ooding in, prompted him to work on y control. “At the time, there were so many displaced people living very closely together, and the garbage and waste accumulated, producing tons of ies,” Diclaro said. “I remember walking out of my tent and just being covered with them.” Koehler said the y control device can be used as an alternative to aerial pesticide treatments, which often attempt to cover too large an area to be effective. “It’s a much more targeted way to deal with the problem,” Koehler said. The device, which controls house ies, phorid ies and blow ies, is now available through pest control distributors. Insecticide is sold separately. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Obituaries should be submitted by sending e-mail to obits@newszap.com. Free Health Fair at HRMC FHP still investigatingBY JUAN LOPEZ jlopez@newszap.comA Clewiston couple crashed on S.R. 78 last Sunday just before noon and Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the cause of the crash. Larry Maclennan, 46, and Shirley Maclennan, 59, were headed northbound on S.R. 78 in their 2006 Nissan SUV. They were just south of Banana Grove Rd. when, according to the of cial report, Larry Maclennan lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway. The vehicle went onto the grassy shoulder of S.R. 78 and continued heading in a northeast direction as it crossed over a service road. The vehicle came to rest against a small group of trees. Larry Maclennan was transported to Raulerson Hospital in Okeechobee by Glades County emergency services due to the critical injuries he sustained. Shirley Maclennan was reported as not having any injuries. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident and alcohol has already been determined as not being a factor in the accident. Man Suffers Critical Injuries in S.R. 78 wreck Woman writes book, uses Clewiston as settingBY JESSICA SCHULTZGloria Taylor Weinberg published her novel, "A Homicide in Hooker's Point," using Clewiston as her backdrop. Earlier this week, the awardwinning author shared her motivation for writing the book with The Clewiston News. Using Clewiston as the main setting of the story came naturally to the Clewiston native. Weinberg graduated from Clewiston High School in 1959, and spent her early childhood in Hooker's point. "I have vivid memories of the place and people who lived there [Hooker's Point]," said Weinberg. "Some of those memories were traumatic, obviously, but others are tenderly cherished." In the book, the main character, Vicki, is caught up in a con ict when her neighbor, Eric Magruder, kills her kitten during a dispute. Vicki and her father watch as Eric is gunned down in their front yard. Witnesses say he was killed by his father-in-law. But one investigator has doubts. Both Vicki and her father had access to a gun that day, and her father refuses to produce it. The author describes Clewiston and some of its history. The recollections are accurate, drawn from old newspapers and other written accounts. However, her description of life in Hooker's Point is what locals may nd themselves relating to the most. The book is already receiving glowing reviews from other former residents. "I was struck by the author's insightful portrayal of people and places; which brought back fond memories of the simple, authentic life experiences that I had growing up in Clewiston near Hooker's Point," said Erik C. Larsen Asked about her in uences, Weinberg answers that Harper Lee, who wrote "To Kill A Mockingbird," is her favorite author, but she has been in uenced by every book she has read since childhood. With themes similar to those in "To Kill A Mockingbird," Weinberg sends a message in her novel that prejudice and cruelty are evil and leave wounds that sometimes never heal. "A Homicide in Hooker's Point" earned Weinberg a 2011 Royal Palm Literary Award from the Florida Writers Association. The novel is now available online at amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, and xlibris.com. Hooker’s Point Featured in Mystery Novel Gloria Weinberg

2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Family Eye Care sells electronic focusing prescription glassesFamily Eye Care has always been an innovator in offering the newest technology in eye care to the residents of LaBelle and surrounding areas. They are very proud to announce that they now have available Pixel Optics' revolutionary emPower! eyeglasses, the world's first electronic focusing prescription eyewear. They are the first and currently the only vision care practitioners in Hendry County to offer this new technology. The eyeglasses feature composite lenses with a thin transparent LCD-like layer, microchips, micro-machine accelerometers and miniature rechargeable batteries. With all this they have the same weight, feel and look of your everyday high fashion eyewear designs. The eyewear cost about $1,350 for a complete pair, which includes the frame, lenses, coatings, and all electronic components including a charger. "We are happy to offer our patients this cutting edge vision correction option. Bifocals or the reading power in progressive lenses often interfere with daily activity. Walking up and down steps is a perfect example. Being able to turn the reading power off to reduce it is a real breakthrough," says Drs' Parrish and Youmans. The microchip, micro-accelerometers, and miniature batteries are hidden discreetly in the temples of the frames. The transparent liquid crystal layer in each lens is able to electronically change and activate the near focus zone of the lens only when needed without making a sound or change in the appearance of the lens. Just touch the frame to adjust your view, or set it to do it automatically. emPower! offers instant, automatic vision correction for all ranges of sight, less distortion and wider fields of view compared to a traditional progressive lens. MORALES 10 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 23, 2012 By Kimberly L. ClementTeam Coach/Leader Glades County 4-H Livestock Judging Team has been very busy this year and has conquered a lot of accomplishments here lately. Now they are working hard for State competition coming up in April at the Univ ersity of Florida’s Horse Teaching Unit in Gainesville. The team’s rst road trip took them to the University of Florida’s Livestock Judging Clinic and Practice Contest at the Horse Teaching Unit. This event was put on by Dr. Chad Carr (Extension Specialist – Animal Sciences), Jessie Savell (Beef Unit Manager – Animal Sciences) University of Florida Livestock Judging Team Coach Justin Crossw hite and members of the UF Livestock J udging Team. This two-day event was very helpful to the team and we hope to go back each year to keep up with the industry needs in livestock. Junior Team members brought home their rst ribbons and trophy from the South Florida Fair competition in West Palm, Jan. 21. They were so excited they couldn’t believe that their team came in third place overall. Jr. Team Member Ross Perry came in 5th place w ith his individual score overall. Jr. Team members w ere Ross Perry, Lacy Green, J amie Hingson, and Mallory Thomas. Sr. team members Tom Bar eld, Warner Ward, A laina Lee and Kathleen Bar eld also had a good day judging at the competition. Friday, Feb. 3, team members Amy Perry, Ashley Lara, Lacy Green, Lowell Roberts and Ross Perry traveled to Okeechobee for the FFA A lumni Livestock Judging Competition and had a great w orkout and practice. Even though the team did not bring home any trophies from this competition we were able to get out and have a good learning experience as well as meet other local 4-H and FFA members in our area that have the same enjoyment of Livestock Judging. Tampa State Fair competition was held Feb. 11 with team members Amy Perry, Tom Bar eld, Ross Perry and Haley Stephens. The team did an awesome job at judging coming in 5th place overall advancing them on to State Finals. The most current competition was held Friday, Feb. 17, in Kissimmee at the Silver Spurs Arena where team members Amy Perry, Lane Prevatt and Raif Prevatt competed and placed second overall as a team and Amy Perry was rst overall for individual score. All of our traveling and competitions could not have been possible if it were not for the folks of Glades and Hendry County who supported our team in our once-a-year fundraiser of selling Otis Spunkmeyer Cookies. Congratulations to the team members and Good Luck at State Competition. If you have any questions regarding Livestock Judging or the team please call the Glades County Extension Of ce at 863946-0244. Glades County’s Annual Chalo Nitka Festival is one of Florida’s oldest continuing festivals. The rst festival was held in 1948 to celebrate the paving of what was then Main Street in Moore Haven. Since that time, the Annual Chalo Nitka Festival has evolved into a week-long series of events including a livestock show, a ranch rodeo, a fair and dances. The festival calendar includes: Monday, Feb. 27, the dairy show starts at 7 p.m. in the Bronson Arena. Tuesday, Feb. 28, the swine show starts at 7 p.m. in the Bronson Arena. Wednesday, Feb. 29, the Pee Wee show starts at 6:45 p.m. and the steer show at 7 p.m. in the Bronson Arena. Thursday, March 1, the Pee Wee show starts at 6:45 p.m. and the Livestock auction starts at 7 p.m. in the Bronson Arena. Friday, March 2, the Small Fry Fishing Tournament registration is at 8 a.m. at the city softball elds. The tournament will start at 8:30 a.m. Kids Day activities start at 10:30 a.m. in the Chalo Nitka Park. The Chalo Nitka Rodeo starts at 7 p.m. on Friday, in the Bronson Arena. The Chalo Nitka adult dance is at 9 p.m. (for those over the age of 18) in the Doyle Conner Building. Saturday, March 3, there will be a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. in the Moore Haven Cafeteria. The fair opens at 11 a.m. Saturday in Chalo Nitka Park. The Chalo Nitka Rodeo will continue on March 3 at 7 p.m. in the Bronson Arena. Another Chalo Nitka adult dance will be at 9 p.m. Saturday in the Doyle Conner Building. For more information online, go to www. chalonitka.com. Chalo Nitka Festival events start next week The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has postponed the start date for installation of the Manatee Protection System (MPS) at the Moore Haven Lock as a result of concerns expressed by the public at a meeting held Feb. 16 in Clewiston. The lock on the Okeechobee Waterway is now scheduled to be temporarily closed from May 14–July 9. The adjustment comes after local business owners, recreational boaters and residents expressed concerns about closing the locks earlier in the spring due to heavy usage of the facilities. “After hearing the economic and recreational concerns expressed at last night’s meeting, the Corps has adjusted the scheduled lock closure to reduce the impact to the local communities,” said Lt. Col. Michael Kinard, deputy district commander. “This timeframe will allow the lock to remain open further into the boating season, while allowing us to complete the installation at the beginning of the hurricane season when the risk is low. It’s all about balancing impacts and risks.” Installation of the MPS is part of the Manatee Pass Gates project. The primary goal of the project is to safeguard Florida’s endangered manatees from serious injury or death at water control structures and navigation locks by modifying these structures with a MPS. Using a set of acoustic transmitters and receivers, the MPS detects the West Indian manatee and prevents the gates from closing and harming the protected animal. BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe Sora is the most widespread and abundant of the North American rails, the Sora breeds across Canada and the northern United States and winters in the southern states including Florida and northern South America. This bird is also known by other names including the Carolina Rail, Soree or Meadow Chicken. Soras are secretive birds that are more often heard than seen. Their call is a loud descending whinny “whee-heehee-hee-hee-hee” or a two-noted “sorAH” call with the second note higher. The adult Sora is a small marsh bird, with a triangular body shape, slate gray body, and short yellow bill. They have strong legs and a short tail which is often held upright showing white underneath. Their face and bib are black. Immature Soras don’t have a black face and throat and are buffy brown on the chest. These little marsh-walkers forage for seeds, grasses, aquatic plants, insects, and snails while walking or swimming. Nesting activity is reported from April through early August on their northern breeding grounds. The female builds a saucer-shaped nest on the ground or a platform over shallow water. The clutch size ranges from eight-13 eggs which are incubated for 19 days. The eggs hatch over a span of two-13 days. Chicks are capable of walking or swimming short distances by the end of their rst day and are independent about four weeks of age. You are invited to join Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers for birding trips to STA5 located 20 miles south of Clewiston. For reservations for these free trips or to request information contact: Margaret England sta5birding@embarqmail. com or call 863-674-0695 or 863-517-0202. Visit the HGAS website at www.hendrygladesaudubon.org or the Hendry-Glades Audubon. Mark your calendar. Early bird registration for in Florida’s Big “O” Birding Festival ends March 1st. This birding, photography, and boat festival will be held March 28 through 31. Join us for the largest bird-themed event in South Central Florida, located on the Southwest shores of Lake Okeechobee, the state’s largest lake. The event features boat trips on Lake Okeechobee and the Caloosahatchee River. Some of Florida’s best known guides and birders will be leading trips and presenting programs during the event. Photographers will have opportunities to attend workshops and trips with professional photographer and instructor, John Lopinot. Wide vistas of blue skies, oak-canopied rivers, quaint small antique towns, and farming communities offer visitors a taste of inland Florida. Some of the state’s rarest plants and animals are found here including the Snail Kite, Florida Scrub Jay, and Florida panther. The national average has increased 17.1 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 35.0 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. “Gasoline prices have perked up a bit in the last week,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “As we continue to move towards warmer weather, gasoline prices will follow, with prices accelerating higher at a faster pace come late March into April, so if motorists think this is bad, they should really hold on to their chairs,” DeHaan said. By Eric KoppSpecial to the Glades County Democrat MOORE HAVEN—A Miami man was arrested on a felony drug charge after he was reportedly stopped for speeding in Moore Hav en and over 200 grams of suspected marijuana was found in his vehicle. Trey Adonte Turner, 21, Wood St., was arrested Saturday, Feb. 11, on a felony charge of possession of marijuana over 20 grams and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Glades County Jail under a bond of $5,500. Jail records indicate he has since been released on bond. An arrest report by Deputy Anthony Blachowski, of the Glades County Sheriff’s Ofce (GCSO), stated that he stopped Turner at the intersection of U.S. 27 and Fourth Street at 2:21 a.m. for doing 57 mph in a 35 mph zone. GCSO Deputy Richard Ermeri responded to the scene and because Turner appeared to be very nervous he asked if he could search the silver 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan. In his report Deputy Ermeri stated that while he was talking to Turner, who was still seated in the van, he saw a small amount of a suspicious substance on the panel of the driver’s side door. According to GCSO arrest reports Deputy Ermeri searched the vehicle and not only found a partially smoked hand-rolled cigarette that smelled like pot, he also found three plastic bags that contained suspected marijuana. When all of the substances were eld tested, the test allegedly indicated a positive result for the presence of marijuana, In all, continued the deputy’s report, 247.3 grams—or, about 8.72 ounces—of suspected marijuana was found in the vehicle. Deputy Ermeri went on to state that when he found the suspected pot Turner became upset and said “... he forgot it was in there.” Deputy Blachowski stated in his report that Turner said he spent $3,000 for the suspected pot. Besides his criminal arrest, Turner was also issued citations for unlawful speed, driving while license suspended and possession of a controlled substance inside a motor vehicle. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 19 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 23, 2012 Come meet Jerri, Carissa, Jamie & Brandi Along with all the other staff!LaBelle’s #1 Bar & Grill!863-342-8216870 W. Children eagerly lined up for free samples of the treat. Martha Jones, was making dolls out of palmetto ber. She said it takes about two hours to make the doll head and body. The clothing and decorations are much more time consuming. The color traditional costumes worn by the dolls are carefully sewn. The hairstyles portray those worn by traditional Seminole women and men. She explained that she tries to interest children at the Brighton school in learning the traditional crafts. “When they are interested, they catch on fast,” she said. Not all are interested, she added. Jennie Shore wove colored threads around small bunches of dried sweet grass to fashion baskets. She said sweet grass grows in dry areas where palmetto plants grow. They traditionally harvested the sweet grass on a ranch between Okeechobee and Fort Pierce, with the permission of the property owner. She said the land has been sold to the state and they are no longer allowed to gather grass there. The grass grows on a few places on the reservation, she said, “but it’s hard to nd.” In another chickee, Leroy Osceola carved animal gures and toy knives from wood, while his grandchildren played nearby. The carvings are toys for children or trinkets to sell to tourists. At the festival, he carved to demonstrate the craft. But when he was a young boy, carving was serious business. “It was how we made money,” said Mr. Osceola. He said his grandfather taught him to carve. Before the days of the bingo halls, selling souvenirs was one of the few ways the Seminoles could earn money. “We would try to sell enough to buy food for the week,” he said. Simple Extractions Start at $25.00 20 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 23, 2012 By Barbara BrownSpecial to the Glades County Democrat Following their monthly covered dish luncheon, a female Keenager was heard w hispering “A program on shing? I’m in the wrong place!” However, after listening to Charlie Evans, guest of the over-50 group at their monthly meeting at First Baptist Church, she was one of the rst to tell him how much she enjoyed his presentation. His rst comment that at least “6 percent of anglers are women,” got the attention of the women present. Of course, the men w ere already interested when Mr. Evans entered, wearing a shirt with at least 20 shing-related ads on it. Mr. Evans and Mike W hitaker were co-founders and owners of the FLW until 1996, when they sold out and he became president and CEO of FLW. No, “FLW” does not stand for “Florida Waters” the group learned, but is named for Forrest Lloyd Wood, founder of Ranger Boat Company, and a well known icon in the boating business. Charlie compared the Sutter Gold Rush to Florida’s gold mine here. He emphasized the fact that Lake Okeechobee has the best bass shing in the United States, and is a gold mine of its own! For years he hosted the FLW Fishing and TV Show on NBC sports. Following his retirement from FLW, Ranger Boats sponsors Mr. Evans, and he continues shing, but now as a pro sherman in tournaments all over the United States, including his home state of Kentucky. He talked about the economic impact the shing industry has on all of Florida, and in particular the Lake Okeechobee region. There were more than 165 boats in the recent tournament. This makes for a lot of meals, gas, and motel rooms in the Lake Okeechobee area! Each day an angler is assigned a different, randomly chosen, partner. No bass quali es unless it is brought in alive. The lake is off limits to the contestants for three weeks prior to the tournament to insure each angler has an equal chance. The top contestants are subject to a lie-detector test to insure that the rules and regulations of the tournament have been followed, as prize money is in the thousands. Mr. Evans compared tournament rules to God’s rules in the Bible. He emphasized that if people follow the rules set forth in the Bible for living, God blesses us and as in a proshing tournament, if the rules are not followed, the rules can be disastrous. During a question and answer session following his presentation, Mr. Evans was asked “What happens if an angler is caught breaking tournament rules?” He replied that no one would sponsor him or her, and no matter how many bass he, or she, had caught, they would be disquali ed. Following his speech, the Keenagers presented Mr. Evans with a small gift of appreciation, and many followed him outside to check out his Ranger boat, which is complete with “CHARLIE EVANS” written on both sides. He and his wife, Delores, reside in Clewiston during the winter months.
