REPORT FINDS SOME IMPROVEMENTS, MORE NEEDS TO BE DONEBY JUAN LOPEZ jlopez@newszap.comIn a report released by the Health Planning Council of Southwest Florida, Glades County was designated as a Medically Underserved Area. It is common knowledge that Glades County residents do not have many conveniences as others may have. While no one should consider health care a convenience, it has been something that the area has needed for years. In order to be considered a Medically Underserved Area, a county must score below a 65 on the Index of Medical-underservice. Glades scored a 57.3 after the poverty level, percentage of the population over 65, infant mortality, and population-to-physician ratio was calculated. The study reported that there is only one primary care physician serving the area, while three is the minimum for a population that size. According to the study, a dentist that serves low-income and migrant farmworkers is also needed. Also needed is at least one mental health professional. The report, being thorough, includes socioeconomic indicators which do have an impact on the availability of healthcare. More importantly, the leading causes of death were covered in great detail. The leading cause of death was a tie between cancer and heart disease for Glades County. The type of cancer most reported was lung cancer, given the amount of Glades County Overall Health is PoorSee Health — Page 27

BY TOM NORDILE UFOne species of Penicillium fungus gave humanity the miracle drug penicillin; some of its cousins give the citrus industry headaches. Commonly known as green mold and blue mold, respectively, the fungi Penicillium digitatum and Penicillium italicum spoil recently harvested fruit. But researchers with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences have found an environmentally friendly way to address the problem—using blue light to activate natural defenses within the fruit. A study published in the current issue of the journal Postharvest Biology and Technology showed that tangerines inoculated with P. digitatum spores had a 100 percent infection rate when kept in constant darkness or constant white light for six days. When kept in constant blue light the rate was 50 percent. And when kept on a schedule that alternated 12 hours of blue light exposure w ith 12 hours of darkness, the infection rate was only 25 percent. These preliminary ndings suggest that certain light wavelengths activate an enzyme called phospholipase, which kick-starts the tangerine’s immune response, said Jackie Burns, director of UF’s Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred and one of the study authors. By exposing the fruit to those wavelengths on a schedule that mimics the rhythms of night and day, the scientists increased the protective effect, she said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if these rhythms played a more prominent role in postharvest biology than we currently realize,” Burns said. Though the system isn’t ready for use by industry, UF researchers are pursuing re nements, such as determining the shortest amount of treatment time needed to activate phospholipase. Related UF projects are exploring the potential for blue light to discourage fungal diseases in plant nurseries, and investigating other naturally occurring compounds in citrus that may ght fungal infections. This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.47/g, according to gasoline price website at www.FloridaStateGasPrices.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 66.9 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 0.7 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 5.9 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 65.5 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. “Surprisingly, the average price for a gallon of gasoline fell last week,” said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst. “While volatility in prices is all but guaranteed, the direction in which prices travel is less clear, even after the death of Gadha Many Americans believe his death will mean a drop in oil pricesbut I just don’t see it happening,” DeHaan added. Enjoy the best times of the yearBY STATEPOINTThe holidays are a time for family, fun and festivities. So why are you so stressed? Actually, stress is associated with positive life events as much as negative ones. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed when planning family meals, shopping for gifts, decorating the house or guring out what to do with the kids during their holiday break. “Stress causes an unhealthy ‘high alert!’ response that wears down the body,” says Ashley Davis Bush, author of the book “Shortcuts to Inner Peace: 70 Simple Paths to Everyday Serenity.” “Through intentionally summoning a feeling of inner calm, we literally change the chemistry of our bodies.” If you’re looking to keep a calm head in the midst of visiting relatives and busy shopping malls, try some of Bush’s favorite shortcuts this holiday season: Play It Again, SamWhen you nd yourself grumbling over a nagging task (hanging lights, preparing the guest room), play or sing a speci c song. It doesn’t have to be holiday-related; any upbeat tune will help! Remember ThisWhen waiting in line to purchase gifts or groceries, ask yourself “What do I need to remember?” Keep asking yourself this question until you start to get substantial answers like “I need to remember what really matters in life.” Stop ‘N’ SmellBefore you being cooking a holiday meal, take time to smell your ingredients. Or pull a fragrant item from your pantry that triggers positive emotions (e.g. coffee, vanilla extract, rosemary). Close your eyes and inhale. The smell should ground you in the present, allowing you to savor your time in the kitchen. My SunshineFamily dynamics are complicated and can get strained during the holidays. If you nd yourself getting annoyed with a loved one, consider humming the song “You Are My Sunshine” and remember that your time together is limited. If your buttons really get pushed, excuse yourself and throw cool water on your face or place a wet towel on your neck. Cool relief to the body brings relief to the mind as well. Touch TankIt’s easy in the hustle and bustle of the holidays to forget to appreciate all the beautiful decorations, not to mention the beauty of the season. Consider keeping a small box or basket of seasonal treasures -pine cones, smooth stones, mistletoe and chestnuts. Whenever you feel tense or overwhelmed, take a few moments to nger each object. Simple appreciation tends to restore inner calm. “We often think we need to change our circumstances to feel peaceful or that we need to be immersed in spa-like surroundings to nd tranquility,” says Bush. “But inner peace requires no extra time or money -just a shift in attention.” You can nd more ways to cope with stress at www.ashleydavisbush.com. Let peace on earth begin with you this holiday season. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Obituaries should be submitted by sending e-mail to obits@newszap.com. BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudobonThe annual report, “American Birds,” for the 111th annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) was mailed to last year’s Christmas Bird Count participants this week. The only of cial CBC count circle is in inland South Florida near Lake Okeechobee. It is the 15mile diameter circle that encompasses the South Florida Water Management Stormwater Treatment Area 5 (STA5). It is located 20 miles south of Clewiston at the end of Blumberg Road. The Fourth Annual STA5-Clewiston CBC, w hich was held December 18, 2010, reported the highest annual count total for nine species tallied in the United States (p. 123-128). Taking top honors were 600 Fulvous Whistling-Duck, 500 Anhinga, 75 “exotic” Purple Swamphen, 7,000 American Coot, 38 Snail Kite, 9 Western Kingbird, 63 Indigo Bunting, 3 Dickcissel and 5,400 Boat-tailed Grackle. In Florida the STA5-Clewiston (FLSO) count was recognized for reporting 17 Crested Caracara, 75 Purple Swamphen, 90 Limpkin and 1 Cassin’s Kingbird (pg. 64-66). Check the CBC web site for 111 years of reports at www.birds.audubon.org/christmasbird-count. Two species of Florida’s ve common owls w ere reported during last year’s STA5-Clewiston CBC. Three Barn Owls were found on Blumberg Road and one Burrowing Owl on the L1 Dike Road. Absent from the past three counts was the Great Horned Owl which was last reported in 2007 near Dooley Grade Road and County Road 835. The Great Horned Owl, Florida’s largest owl, is a erce nocturnal hunter which has been described as a “winged tiger” or a “lean mean killing machine.” It is known for putting fear in birds and mammals alike because of its reputation for eating any living creature up to the size of skunks or domestic cats. It is often harassed by ocks of American Crows who will travel long distances to mob a Great Horned Owl and yell at them for hours. This often solitary bird has a grayish upperside and a tawny-orange face with prominent ear tufts w hich are widely spaced on its head. Its call is usually a deep muf ed series of hoots. Females will answer males with a nasal barking sound while juveniles beg with a wheezy or scratchy bark. This year-round fairly common bird breeds in Florida chie y in the winter. Although they are capable of building their own nests, the Great Horned Owl will often use an abandoned nest w here the female will typically incubate two w hite eggs for 26 to 35 days. The young will leave the nest at 35 days of age, but are dependent upon their parents for food until they are able to y at 9 to 10 weeks of age. If you would like to participate in upcoming birding trips or the Christmas Bird Count December 31st at STA5 e-mail Margaret England sta5birding@embarqmail.com or call 863-674-0695 or 863-517-0202. All the Holy Ones and Their EveningBY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchWe’re getting ready to celebrate another annual holiday: Halloween. It is a time of costumes, children’s activities and partying. Why ghosts or witches? Why skeletons or going around and making scary noises? The answer lies in what Halloween is about, anyway. It goes back to a time when faithful people remembered the spiritual world; unseen forces of good and evil that lurked around, and remembering that one day good would triumph over evil, the Right Man would win and His victorious ones would be w ith Him for eternity. Halloween celebrations had their origins in the remembrance that God’s saints w ould be victorious and they were remembered annually on All Saints’ Day. The word “saint” was used in an older form; referring to “the holy ones” or the “hallowed” ones. We still keep that word in the common interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer; “hallowed be thy name.” All Hallows’ Day was the remembrance of God’s saints; the heroes of the Church. Like many special occasions, the evening before was a time also a part of the celebration. (Think of Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve). It was known as “All Hallows’ Evening” and that became shortened simply to “Halloween.” The faithful knew of the triumph of God’s heroes that would be celebrated on All Saints’ Day; and the forces of evil would do their worst because they knew their end was near. Hence, the goblins, ghosts, witches and all of the other evil spirits would be in the world one last time – Halloween was their moment but it would be a last moment. Today, we remember only a vestige of this special religious celebration; God would one day triumph and the saints would come marching in! In my work and studies, I see the importance of remembering where we come from, our roots and heritages. Human beings are shaped by those around them who give them their very identities, values, attitudes, place in family-community-world. That we hang on to Halloween is a recognition of the nal triumph of good over evil even though very, very few of those who celebrate are aware of its’ origins. It has become ingrained; and maybe for a good reason. We may hold onto the things that make us w ho we are for unknown reasons, but know something about them is vitally important to our v ery being. I hope Halloween is one of those occasions; celebrated because somewhere, somehow it stands for what we believe. Something in our make-up tells us it’s worth remembering, having around. Those who know and share the origin of such occasions (Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and so many of the rest) know how we should be thankful for what they teach us about who we are and, ultimately, what God has to say to us through them. Jesus chose an earthly home, connections with His people, roots in traditions laid down by God, and He knew them and built on them. It is an example for each of us. Happy Halloween! Halloween ThoughtsBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchIn 1 Corinthians 9:22, Paul states that he tries to nd common ground with those around him so that he might share Christ with them. My purpose in this article isn’t to make a statement about how we should or shouldn’t feel about Halloween, rather to encourage us all to nd “common ground” with unbelievers and use October 31 as a way to help share Christ. God calls us to be faithful and to make a difference. We don’t have to do great things. Little things we do can make a big impact. There are times in our lives when we have opportunities to reach out and touch people in a special way. Halloween can be one such opportunity. One of the biggest problems we face is that Halloween today has become strongly associated with the occult and a preoccupation with evil entities — two in uences that Scripture and the church have always warned against. This makes it even more important for us to shine in the midst of the darkness that surrounds us. There was a man in the neighborhood where I grew up who made snow cones every Halloween for all of us trick-or-treaters. I remember him. More than that, I remember how special he made each of us feel. It inspired within me a desire to one day, if at all possible, to do what he did: to make and hand out snow cones on Halloween; to make good memories by touching the hearts of children and youth in special ways. (God has blessed me to be able to do this, and I will be handing out snow cones on Oct. 31 at First United Methodist Church of Clewiston. Stop by if you’re in the neighborhood!) As kids come to your door, let them see His light in you. Don’t give in to the world, but be in the world with the Christ light shining through you. Don’t hide it under a bushel, but hold it up to the world as a living witness for our living God. It is the combined wattage of many lights, each shining in its own place but for a common purpose, that illuminates a city in the midst of the darkness of night. Someone shared that being a Christian is like being a pumpkin. “God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. Then He cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff. He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc., and then carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for the entire world to see.”Wisdom from a WatermelonBY JACKIE MILLER, EVANGELIST First Christian ChurchWilliam J. Bryan was passing through Columbus, Ohio, many years ago and stopped to eat in the restaurant at the depot. His attention was called to a slice of watermelon, and he ordered it and ate it. He was so pleased with the melon that he asked the waiter to dry some of the seeds that he might take them home and plant them in his garden. That night he thought he would use the watermelon as an illustration. So the next morning, when he reached Chicago, he had enough seeds weighed to nd out that it would take about ve thousand watermelon seeds to weigh a pound and he estimated the watermelon weighed about forty pounds. Then Mr. Bryan applied mathematics to the watermelon. A few weeks before, someone had planted a little seed in the ground. Under the in uence of sunshine and shower that little watermelon seed had taken off its coat and gone to work; it had gathered from somewhere two hundred thousand times its own weight and forced the enormous weight through a tiny stem and built a watermelon! On the outside it had put a covering of green, within that a rind of white and within that a core of red with little seeds each one capable of doing the same work over again. What architect drew the plan? Where did that little watermelon seed get its tremendous strength? Where did it nd its avoring extract and its coloring matter? Did it build a watermelon? Until you can explain a watermelon, do not be too sure that you can set limits to the power of the Almighty, or tell just what He would do, or ho w He would do it. The most learned men in the world cannot explain a watermelon, but the most ignorant man can eat a watermelon and enjoy it. God has given us the things that we need and He has given us the knowledge necessary to use those things. The truth that He has revealed to us is in nitel y more important for our welfare than it would be to understand the mysteries that He has seen t to conceal from us. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 10 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee October 27, 2011 RELIGION COLUMNS Rev. A nd, the problem may be getting worse, as a new study from the AHA predicts that those who have heart disease are expected to increase to more than 40 percent of Americans by 2030. This prediction doesn’t have to be reality. One of the major risk factors for heart disease is high cholesterol, which may be lowered by eating a heart-healthy diet and exercising. “Heart disease runs in my family so I understand rst-hand the role that genetics play in cholesterol and overall health. But maintaining a heart healthy diet and choosing foods that may actively help lower cholesterol are the simplest, most effective things people can do for heart health,” says Dr. Travis Stork, ER physician and co-host of the TV show “The Doctors.” To help educate people on easy ways to reduce cholesterol, Dr. Stork has teamed up with Cheerios to share helpful tips. Food choices are key Because heart health risks can be modi ed by diet, eating foods low in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol is important. And, the soluble ber in oats, known as beta glucan, has been shown to help lower cholesterol. Beta glucan is found in familiar foods such as Cheerios cereal and oatmeal, and helps rid the body of some LDL or “bad” cholesterol. It acts like a sponge in the digestive tract to soak up cholesterol, helping to naturally remove it from the body. To garner bene ts from beta glucan, it is recommended that you eat three grams of soluble ber daily from whole grain oat foods, such as Cheerios which has one gram per serving. Eaten as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, this may reduce the risk of heart disease. Other foods that may actively help lower heart disease risk include certain sh, such as salmon and tuna, that are high in a “good fat.” And foods containing at least 0.65 grams per serving of plant sterol esters, eaten twice a day with meals for a daily total intake of at least 1.3 grams, also may reduce the risk of heart disease when eaten as part of a heart-healthy diet. “When doctors tell patients they have high cholesterol, they often receive information about the things they cannot or should not eat,” says Susan J. Crockett, PhD, RD, FADA and leader of the General Mills Bell Institute. “We think it’s important to empower people with the simple things they can do that may help lower their cholesterol.” With this in mind, the company is donating $200,000 to WomenHeart, the nation’s only patient centered organization dedicated to educating women about living a heart healthy life (www. womenheart.org). For more on how Cheerios may help lower cholesterol, visit Cheerios.com. A few simple lifestyle changes, such as becoming more active and making smarter food choices, may help improve your heart health. Possible strike to South Florida predictedHurricane Rina has strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane on Monday and looks to be a very powerful, yet small storm. Over the next few days, the storm is expected to curve off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. A cold front will be approaching the Gulf of Mexico and will be a factor in the storm’s overall development and strength. Conditions are not favorable for storm growth after the storm makes the Yucatan turn and head into the Gulf due to winds and dry air. Forecasters are predicting a weakening of Rina that will begin today and head through Friday. Saturday will be the deciding day for the hurricane’s possible path toward South Florida. If Rina is weakened enough, then it will make a u-turn back to the Caribbean or be blocked from the Gulf. However, if Rina is able to stay strong, it will be aiming for Florida and the Keys by early Saturday and may brush Southwest Florida as a weakening tropical storm near the end of the weekend. Two models have projected Florida landfall. It still too early to tell but forecasters are asking that everyone needs to stay alert and be prepared if the storm does turn this way. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Open Evenings Emergencies Welcome All InsuranceWelcomeFREEDigital X-Ray & Consultation or Second OpinionNEW DENTURES$359starting at$99ea.starting at(D5110) (D5120)Exp. 10/31/11Exp. 10/31/11Exp. 10/31/11(D2750) (D7140) FROM (D9310) (D0330)CROWNSEXTRACTIONS$499LIMITED TIME ONLY IMPLANTOLOGYISNOTARECOGNIZEDSPECIALTYBYTHEAMERICANDENTALASSOCIATIONANDFLORIDABOARDOFDENTISTRY. Lakeport Gators Tornado Party A few safety tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission can protect children who plan to go trick-or-treating this Halloween. Treats: Warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering. Flame Resistant Costumes: When purchasing a costume, masks, beards, and wigs, look for the label Flame Resistant. Although this label does not mean these items won’t catch re, it does indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from the ignition source. To minimize the risk of contact with candles or other sources of ignition, avoid costumes made with imsy materials and out ts with big, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts. Costume Designs: Purchase or make costumes that are light and bright enough to be clearly visible to motorists. For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with re ective tape that will glow in the beam of a car’s headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with re ective tape. Re ective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle, and sporting goods stores. To easily see and be seen, children should also carry ashlights. Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling. Children should wear welltting, sturdy shoes. Mother’s high heels are not a good idea for safe walking. Hats and scarfs should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children’s eyes. Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have a child wear a loosetting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision. If a mask is used, however, make sure it ts securely and has eyeholes large enough to allow full vision. Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be of soft and exible material. Pedestrian Safety: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child. All children should WALK, not run from house to house and use the sidewalk if available, rather than walk in the street. Children should be cautioned against running out from between parked cars, or across lawns and yards where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers. Choosing Safe Houses: Children should go only to homes where the residents are known and have outside lights on as a sign o f welcome. Children should not enter homes or apartments unless they are accompanied by an adult. People expecting trick-or-treaters should remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps and porches. Candlelit jacko’-lanterns should be kept away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the ame. Indoor jack-o’-lanterns should be kept away from curtains, decorations, and other furnishings that could be ignited. For further information on product safety, consumers may call the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s hotline at 1-800-638-2772. Tips to Stay Safe on Halloween

The lake water level is up to around 13 feet above sea level and the water is still coming in strong from the Kissimmee basin. I think that we should at least have as much water as we did last year at this time if not more when it all nally drains into the lake. Our prayers have been answered with a lot of water at the end of the rainy season and the beginning of our busy shing season here on the lake. The other great thing is that the water is really clean and clear here at the south end of the lake and, even when the wind blows really hard, the water cleans right up in a day or two. Bass are being caught almost everywhere here on the south end of the lake from up around Cochran's Pass all the way down to the Pahokee area. Places like Rita Island, Coots Bay, East Wall, West Wall, and up on the shoal have all been producing sh and it will only get better. I was really surprised at how fast the bass moved into these areas off of the main lake. The bass are in the grass and not just little but some really nice bass in the ve pound plus range. I was also really surprised at how far back in the grass they have moved, and I would have thought the bass would have stayed closer to the outside grass line. However, they have really moved back in a long ways. It is time to get a braided line back on your reels and get a good heavy action rod out to catch these bass that are back in this grass. I spool my reels up with fty and sixty ve pound test Diamond Braid and use a heavy action rod that has a little tip so that you can make long casts. The reason for long cast right now is that, with these bass just moving into the grass, they are a little spooky yet and you start grinding around in this thick grass and you will spook these bass. My bait choice in the thick grass is a soft plastic swimbait; I throw the Charlie's Worm Zipper Dipper and the all new Big Dipper with a big 6/0 or 7/0 Trokar hook. I use a couple different colors but junebug is my go-to color. I will also pitch a Charlie's Worms Flippin' Bug to the reed heads and into some of the heavy mats we have for now until the spray boats nd them and kill them. With the bass moving so fast toward and into the grass, an area that didn't have sh today might have sh in it tomorrow. You will just have to keep trying your favorite areas until the bass get there and they will get there. I'm really excited about the season this year on Lake Okeechobee. After the awesome year we had last year, it should only be better this season. The lake is very healthy looking and so are all the bass we are catching. Now is the time to book a trip of a lifetime on world famous Lake Okeechobee. Until next week good luck, tight lines, and I hope to see everyone on the water soon.Capt. For the second dry season in a row, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center is forecasting La Nia conditions to in uence weather patterns across the country, including South Florida, from December through February. This colder-than-normal ocean surface temperature in the equatorial Paci c drives dry weather across South Florida. “Our perennial challenge is to accomplish the district’s core missions of ood control and water supply given these complex weather patterns,” said Susan Sylvester, SFWMD Chief of the Water Control Operations Bureau. “One constant is that the district will continue to follow dry-season protocols and work with local communities and our federal partners to manage the water in the regional system as effectively as possible.” Water conservation is the most ef cient and cost-effective way to stretch the regional water supply in preparation for the dry season. As a result, landscape irrigation restrictions remain in place throughout the district’s 16-county region. Predictions of below-average rainfall follow a slightly above-average 2011 South Florida wet season. An average of 34.49 inches of rain fell between June 1 and October 20, representing 107 percent of the average amount for this period. However, Lake Okeechobee, the 730-square mile backup water supply for South Florida and a barometer of conditions for the entire region, remains below its historical average. The lake is at 12.93 feet NGVD today. The historical average for this date is 15.06 feet NGVD. Water managers expect the lake will remain in its water shortage management zone in the upcoming months. This is because La Nia-in uenced dry seasons often produce only about two-thirds of the average amount of rainfall during this period. The NWS is calling for a greater than 70 percent likelihood of a drier-than-normal November to April. These conditions also threaten to create a potentially severe wild re season. “This would be the second year of a multiyear La Nia. Second year La Nias are often extremely dry,” said Robert Molleda, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service. “Previous La Nia events during the last 60 years have resulted in average dry season rainfall amounts of about 60 to 65 percent of normal across South Florida.”Just the FactsSouth Florida’s Dry Season November – May About 18 inches of rain is the average May and October are important transition months March, April and May have the highest evaporation rates and lowest rainfall The La Nia years of 1951, 1956, 1975 and 2000 were all among the driest calendar years on record. Among the of cial forecast highlights: High likelihood of below-average precipitation for South Florida during winter-spring, with near-normal temperatures expected Drought conditions probable to return to South Florida sometime this coming winter or spring Average dry season precipitation: 12 to 15 inches in the interior/west to 15 to 21 inches in the east Average winter temperature: 64 to 66 F in the interior/west to 67 to 69 F in the east Less “storminess” due to winter storm tracks staying farther north in La Nia patterns, thereby decreasing severe weather potential Freezing temperatures possible sometime in early winter period (Dec. or Jan.), with a possible trend toward warmer conditions in February and beyond A 2011 late-season tropical storm is still a possibility that could signi cantly impact rainfall amounts.Highlights of the Past Three YearsForecasts of a drier-than-normal dry season once again showcase South Florida’s weather extremes and water management challenges. Normal: Florida receives an average of 52 inches of rainfall a year, with 70 percent falling during the ve-month wet season from approximately June through October. Slightly above Normal: The 2011 wet season has so far produced slightly above average rainfall. Two non-tropical storms brought high rainfall totals to several areas of the District in October in a stark contrast to the record dry October 2010. Record Dry Conditions: The 2010-2011 dr y season saw one of its latest starts in 20 years. October 2010 was the driest October on record in South Florida since 1932. The drought continued, with the driest October-to-mid-June period on record. Drier than Normal: The 2010 wet season produced an approximately 4-inch rainfall de cit. Wetter than Normal: The 2009-2010 dry season recorded 131 percent of average dry season rainfall, representing 5.88 inches above normal from the beginning of November through the end of May. Record Wet Conditions: In 2009, the se a breeze cycle ushered in the wet season in May. With 9.04 inches of rain falling across the District, May 2009 became the wettest May on record, according to District records dating back to 1932. Record Dry Conditions: November 2008 through April 2009 marked the driest six-month period in South Florida, according to District records dating back to 1932.Water Conservation Remains KeyThe SFWMD continues to closely monitor water levels and is urging residents and businesses to conserve water and follow landscape irrigation restrictions in effect. More information about irrigation restrictions by area is available on the District’s water restrictions website. For water-saving tips, visit www. savewater .com. Marilyn is the only Healthy Start worker at the Clewiston site of the Hendry and Glades County Health Departments. For her constant dedication and loyal services to Healthy Start clients, she is known locally as an “angel.” She was “given” this name because of her ability to magically nd resources in communities where resources are very scarce. Although Marilyn manages full case loads of English and Spanish speaking clients, she willingly took on additional case loads in Glades County. Marilyn has gone above and beyond the scope of the normal Healthy Start standard of care which is shown through her care coordination outcomes and empathy shown to clients. BY PAT DOBBINS Hendry/Glades Health DepartmentsThe “Memory Bus” is one of the Alzheimer Association’s initiatives and it is a mobile clinic that is open to anyone who is concerned about their memory or that of a family member or friend. The vehicle is an innovative way of bringing the issues of memory loss and dementia to the public and has traveled county wide. It performs a simple test and takes a few minutes. The idea is to detect the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s. It is not only for seniors but for people of all ages. No appointments are necessary. The memory bus will be parked at the Glades County Health Department on Tuesday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Glades County Health Department is located at 1021 Health Park Drive in Moore Haven. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1 in 14 people over the age of 65 has some form of dementia and that number can increase to 1 in 6 for those over the age of 80. Early diagnosis and care for people with dementia, as well as educating those that care for them, is one of the strategic priorities for improving a person’s health and well-being. Memory problems can be common as people get older. Tiredness, stress, depression and certain medications can all affect memory. The important thing is for people to seek help if they have any concerns about memory loss. This event will allow people to talk, in con dence, with an expert. For more information, the national number is 1-800-272-3900 for the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s Association Memory Bus WANT TO SUBMIT NEWS? e vents? | photos? | tips? | stories? Send us an e-mail at gcdnews@newszap.com smokers that have reported in the county. As for heart disease, ischemic (clogged artery) problems were reported the largest. Both conditions can result from having poor diet, lack of exercise and smoking. Sarah Litchy, Tobacco Prevention Specialist, commented on the report’s ndings on lung cancer rates in Glades County and the possible correlation with the high tobacco use in the area. “While I do believe more and more adults, and people in general, are more aware of the dangers of smoking, half the people who use tobacco will die of a tobacco-related illness,” said Litchy. Litchy, who works with children and teens, has seen a slow decrease in the instances of tobacco use by middle and high schoolers. Her hope is that by concentrating on the positive numbers, the use rates will drop signi cantly. When asked if this may in uence the number of cancer-related death in Glades County, Litchy was hopeful. “Hopefully, in the long term, we will see a drop,” she said. “Right now, it is about educating and giving everyone the support to not smoke and to help those who want to quit. So, I do feel that we will see a change in those numbers.” As Litchy works slowly, but surely against smoking, another battle is being fought, starting in the schools against another problem: obesity. The health report revealed that 58.2 percent of Glades County residents were overweight and/or obese. This was determined by the use of the Body Mass Index to calculate a person’s height and weight in order to determine if they are at a healthy weight. According to health specialists, the ideal BMI for a person to have is anywhere from 18.5 to 24.9. Many residents have BMIs above 25 or higher. Being overweight and/or obese is a strong precursor to developing other health problems as diabetes and heart disease. While the state average is at a 62.1 percent, the report does state that it is still quite high. Although, the number of people who reported back as far as 2007 that they were obese has dropped by half, the number of those who are overweight has increased. Mary-Ruth Prouty, Program Manager for Healthy Community, Healthy People, is slowly waging a war against obesity in Glades and Hendry Counties. While specializing in childhood obesity, she does see the results of the study as being fairly accurate. “People lack the education of what is and is not healthy out there,” said Prouty. “It is confusing when people think a certain food or drink is healthy, but then learn that it is, in no way, healthy at all. That is the rst step.” She continued to explain that many people do not know how or do not even think to read the nutrition labels on the foods they buy. That is where education comes in because if they can read it, will they understand what to look for? Right now, a number of programs, being run out of West Glades by the Hendry/Glades Health Departments is working to educate children and in turn, parents about eating properly and learning about nutrition labels. “We have the ‘Mileage Club’ walking club, ‘Fresh 2 U,’ a weekly program where kids in grades K-3 get to try a new fruit or vegetable and a cooking class for the fourth graders who cook healthy foods to try,” she explained. “So far, it is working.” She has heard several reports of parents saying that they tried and will be buying the foods that their children are trying. For her, that is a step in the right direction. “If the parents see that their children are eating these healthy foods and liking it, then they will join in.” Prouty does acknowledge the fact that she and other are ghting an epidemic that has been creeping up now for years. The foods that are being sold now and the lack of exercise people get every single day is slowly killing them. Right now, 26,000,000 people have diabetes and that number was lower in 2002, she explained. “All someone needs to do is make those small changes, which will add up as time goes by,” she said. “The small changes, setting realistic goals, and realizing that you aren’t the only one ghting this is a good way to start losing weight.” One of the opening paragraphs of the study stated, “a signi cant number of Glades County deaths are premature and preventable.” Unknowingly echoing those words, Prouty gave her belief about being healthy. “Prevention is cheaper than paying for the consequences.” HealthContinued From Page 1 Glades CountyUS 27: From the Hendry County Line to Old Highway 27: Construction project---The project consists of milling and resurfacing, drainage improvements, signing and pavement. So you think you know your neighbor, commissioner or daughter pretty well, do you? At a brunch honoring new members of Glades County Woman’s Club, a new slant on fun things that happened in members’ teen-age years followed the meal. Each member drew two slips of paper. On each were written questions about their earlier years. Can you visualize your grandma skinny-dipping, believe it or not, she did, and she loved it! Sneaking around smoking, and thinking their parents didn’t know, was another one that most everyone tried. Getting caught by parents w asn’t so much fun though! Her memory of her rst day of school brought gales of laughter, as Ticia Nolan told of monsters that she was sure w ere lurking in the stairwells as she climbed the stairs to her classroom. Guest Lindsey Swaford declined to comment on one of her questions: ”Not with my grandma and great grandma here!” Here’s another one: can’t you just see Margaret Brown driving a motorcycle? Neither could we, even one with four wheels is hard to imagine being driven by this very sedate lady! No way did Dianne Tillery want to go into outer space. ”I hate heights, and besides there is nothing to do out there!” She does want to go a mission trip down the Amazon River. Jenny Allen’s aunt taught her to swim in two feet of water during a summer vacation, and Pat Ringstaff’s favorite singer when she was a teenager was, who else, of course, Elvis Presley. Those were just some of the hilarious things we learned about our friends, and we all decided it would be fun to go camping with Donna Storter-Long! President Kandi Snow revealed that she got her RN by going to school at night, and working during the day. Applause followed a member’s answer to the question: “Would you allow your child to be on their own at the age you were when you graduated,” as she said “Sure, I was 32 when I received my high school diploma!” She also had worked during the day and attended school at night. Hostess, Bobbi Brown’s answer to the question: “What would you do if you inherited a million dollars,” following her tithe, she would pay off family mortgages, and if she had any left over, she’d buy a motor home, and pay a chauffeur to drive it all over the United States. Hot-chocolate scented candles were presented to new members, Jenny Allen and Ticia Nolan. Members all agreed that they need to have a fun get-together again, when out of state members return, with no business to discuss and no fundraising planned. A pot-luck brunch just to get to know each other better. For more information, please contact Barbara Brown at 863-946-3356.
