Woman Arrested With Ecstasy and Mushrooms

Traffic Stop For Speeding
Leads to Drug Arrest

BY ERIC KOPP
Special to the Democrat
A 22-year old tennis coach has been released
on bond following her arrest on felony drug
charges - including her alleged possession of Psi-
locybin mushrooms - in Glades County.
Adrianne Brizuela, S.W 108th Terrace, Miami,
was arrested on felony charges of possession of

MDMA (ecstasy), possession of ... . i,11 i... over 20
grams and possession of Psilocybin. She was also
arrested on a misdemeanor charge of possession
of drug paraphernalia.
She was booked into the Glades County De-
tention Facility under a $15,000 bond. Jail records
indicate that she has been released on bond.
An arrest report by a Glades County Sheriff's
Office (GCSO) narcotics detective indicated that
the Chrysler PT Cruiser in which Brizuela was a
passenger was stopped for speeding on U.S. 27
just north of Moore Haven.

ated by Alyssa Jay Carroll, 20, S.W 112th Place,
Miami. While she was issued a citation for speed-
ing, she was not charged with drug possession.
The arrest report stated that Carroll was traveling
68 mph in a 60 mph zone.
According to the report, after the car was
stopped GCSO K-9 Sandy sniffed the exterior of
the vehicle and alerted to the passenger-side rear
door. When another GCSO detective searched the
area a small safe was found. Inside the safe was
39.2 grams of a green leafy substance, 49 caplets
and about 14.1 grams of mushrooms, the detec-

the presence of rn ,ii, 1 .... and MDMA, stated the
report. There is no known field test for the mush-
rooms, pointed out the report.
The GCSO detective went on to state that two
glass smoking pipes with a residue and a set of
digital scales were also found. The residue was
also field tested and reportedly indicated a posi-
tive result for the presence of i,, i ,, ....i i

Glades County Welcomes New Health Department Building

Several Services Up and
Running, More to Be Added

BY CHARLES MURPHY AND JUAN LOPEZ
Glades County Democrat
A grand opening celebration and dedica-
tion was held Friday to welcome the brand new
Health Department building to Moore Haven.
Glades County Commissioners, State Health
Department Officials, and State lawmakers De-
nise Grimsley and Lizabeth Benacquisto were
among those on hand for the ceremony, tours of
the building, and a luncheon.
CRA Architects, and Wright Construction
Group officials joined County Commission Chair-
man Russell Echols, Glades County Manager
Wendell Taylor and Health Department Director
Patricia Dobbins for the ribbon cutting ceremo-
ny.
The full-service facility includes exam rooms,
offices, a health clinic, a dental clinic, an environ-
mental health unit, and contains several pieces of
arts that depict people and life in Glades County.
The county donated the land for the facility off
State Road 78 west. Representative Grimsley (R)
District 79, worked hard in Tallahassee to bring
in more than $4 million in grants to help build

"There is such a need in Glades County. That my first tour of the building I couldn't believe how

primitive the building was and I promised that I
would work to get them the money for this facil-
ity," Grimsley said.
"It will be a great facility for the community.
Lets get the word out that we do take insurance,
and we need a good payer mix to support the
building," she added.
Patricia Dobbins said she was really excited for
the potential of services of health care to Glades
County.
"We've been behind the times. We have had
a lot of advocates, lot of legislators pushed for
this," she said. "Everything was aligned for this
to happen. Everyone saw what was happening in
Glades County and everything has worked out."
She praised the team approach to the project,
and said the builder and architect did a wonderful
job on the facility.
Commission Chairman Echols called it a great
day for Glades County. He said the county de-
served a top notch, first-class facility.
"We shouldn't receive fewer services than any
other county," said Mr. Echols. "There was a lot
of tenacity to get this money. They (state officials)
acted like we couldn't get the building done in time
and on budget. Glades County is a little different

Lake Okeechobee Weekly Fishing Report

BY MARK KING
What a great week it has been here on Lake
Okeechobee with warm temperatures and lots of
bass to catch almost anywhere on the lake. My
clients enjoyed catching over fifty bass a day on
two different days this week and plenty of bass on
the other days this week.
Even when the cold front pushed through our
area of South Florida over the weekend we were
still able to catch a fair number of bass including
a couple nice bass over six pounds.
We caught bass on wild shiners, top water,
and soft plastic worms in quite a few different
areas this week, including bass that we caught
off the beds. The full brought a lot of bass in to
spawning areas but this was not a really big push
like it should be next full moon.
As the water temperature moved into the up-
per 60s and lower 70s, the bass seemed to be
everywhere and they were ready to eat almost
anything that you threw at them.
I had two great days catching bass on Gam-
bler Flapp'n Shads from daybreak until sunset,
everything was just right and it was just one of
those days when everything was right.

I also caught a good number of bass on
Gambler Ace's rigged with a 1/16 ounce screw
in weight fished in the scattered eel grass on the
shoal.
Other areas that were good this week include
the East and West Walls, Ritta Island, the Monkey
Box, North Shore, and the outside of Cochran's
Pass. As you can see there were bass to be caught
in a lot of different areas this past week.
The bass were out on the outside grass line
and also back in the shallow water so far that
it almost seemed like they would have to swim
sideways to get into some of the place I caught
fish this week.
With this water level down from last year the
bass seem to be really spooky around their beds
and won't stay on them when you run the trolling
motor near them, a push pole will get you a lot
closer. There were not a lot of big fish caught this
week so this is why that I think that the next full
moon will really push a lot of bigger bass in to
spawn. Not to say that there wasn't some big bass
caught this week just not a lot of them.
Some of the other lures that worked well this
week included lipless crank baits like the Spro

Aruku.'.i, ,, i,, . reen shiner color, Gambler Big EZ
swim bait in copperfield color, and shakey head
jigs with Gambler Sweebo worms when the wa-
ter got cold after the cold front.
The crappie bite has also been pretty good for
some with some bigger crappies being brought in
to the cleaning table.
Some areas to try is Uncle Joe's cut, the rim
canal, dynamite holes, and around Bird Island.
Try both jigs and minnows for the best results.
The FLW Open will be out of Clewiston on the
3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th of February so that means
that there will be a lot of boats out during this time
and I just ask everyone to show lots of courtesy to
these anglers who are out on our lake only a few
days a year trying to make a living and helping to
support our town and it's businesses.
Until next week good luck, light lines and I
hope to see each of you out on the water.

The excitement of the 2011 Walmart
FLW Bass Fishing Tour is coming to Hendry
County in February.
This year's Lake Okeechobee Open will
take place in Clewiston from February 3 to

Florida (http://www.goodwillswfl.org) is
hooked in for all the fun and excitement.
The Walmart FLW Tour is operated by
FLW Outdoors, the world's leading tourna-
ment-fishing organization.
The 2011 Tour season consists of 11 bass
fishing events, including four Open tourna-
ments, six Majors and the Forrest Wood Cup,
and the Walleye Tour Championship.
Among those competing will be profes-
sional angler Chad Grigsby of Maple Grove,
Minn., who will be sporting the Goodwill
jersey and Smiling G logo and representing
Goodwill on the Tour.
Grigsby has participated on the Tour for
nine years, with career earnings nearing
$500,000 and nine top-10 finishes, including
one at the Forrest Wood Cup, which is con-
sidered one of the most competitive events
in pro bass fishing.
Goodwill, which operates more than
2,500 retail stores and donation centers
throughout the United States and Canada,
will utilize the resources of FLW Outdoors to
drive traffic and awareness to its locations.
Goodwill will receive exposure and have

ty to collect donations of gently-used items,
and to promote its mission of providing pro-

ties and other barriers to independence.
"The relationship formed between FLW
Outdoors and Goodwill has demonstrated
how a unique partnership can benefit both
organizations and our communities," said
Trisha Blake, president of FLW Outdoors
Marketing Division.
"Goodwill provides skills training and
support services to hundreds of people ev-
ery day through its multiple programs, and
we are honored to be a part of that and con-
tinue that relationship."
The partnership between Goodwill and

FLW Outdoors came about through the
work of Irwin L. Jacobs, who is the chair-
man and chief executive officer of FLW Out-
doors, as well as the creator of FLW Fantasy
Fishing.
"Goodwill's mission of helping people
find jobs resonates with Jacobs," said Caro-
lyn Johnson, Goodwill's Vice President of

"Goodwill will collect donations from
FLW Outdoors fans and partners, and the
revenue generated from the sale of these
items will fund career training, not just for
people in Clewiston, but across Southwest

Things Outside of Our
Experience
BY JACKIE MILLER, EVANGELIST
First Christian Church
What are the many things that happens to an
individual when he surrenders to Christ, through
Faith in the Gospel, Repentance of sins, Confes-
sion of Faith of Christ and Baptism (immersion)
into Christ?
Several of the things that happen to him when
he accepts Christ are a matter of how God sees
things and are completely outside of his experi-
ence. Only by faith can he know that they have
taken place.
The first of these is forgiveness. This occurs as
a result of God imputing the individual's sins to
Jesus. He, therefore, becomes sinless in the way
that God, the righteous judge, looks upon him.
Second is justification. The righteousness of
Jesus Christ is imputed to his account. In this way
he becomes not just forgiven but positively righ-
teous. In classical reformed i. 1i,."-, these two
things are seen as one.
The third thing is adoption. Because of the
foregoing, God treats the individual as His child
who will not likely have a strong conviction of
adoption unless he understands the first two
points.
Our access to God is not by God's mercy or by
our own worthiness but by God's having forgiven
our sin and having imputed Christ's righteousness
to us. Any holiness, any change, or any commu-
nion with God that the Holy Spirit works in us is
because we are forgiven, justified and treated (ad-
opted) as a child of God.
It seems to me that our modern American
evangelicalism increasingly gets the cart before
the horse and is preoccupied almost exclusively
with our experience of God's work in our lives.

Can We Do Something To End
Violence?
BY REV SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+
Saint Martin's Church
Some of discourse following from the recent
shooting of a congresswoman is about the tone
of dialogue in the nation. It's believed to be re-
lated to our level of violence and lack of civility to

each other.
I recently
received an -.
e mail where
someonetold
me of miss-
ing some
thing; how
she "hated"
it. I replied,
suggesting
that maybe
she was re
ally "disap-
pointed," but
"hated it?"
Hatred is
a much strong Rev. Sam S. Thomas, Ph.
ger emotion D. +
than disap
pointment;
and it was nothing lost that couldn't be made up.
Sometimes, the poor choice of words suggests
some emotion that is not called for or may not
really be accurate.
If the thought is the parent of the action; think
ing clearly, choosing the right words to express
our thoughts is doubly important in society today
where violence is rampant and short tempers
abound.
Thinking and then speaking clearly makes a
difference. During His final discourse with His
disciples, Jesus tells them "...a time is coming
when I will no longer use (figurative) language
but will tell you plainly about my Father (John
17:25)." The disciples respond "Now you are
speaking clearly ... Now we can see ... you do
not even need to have anyone ask questions (v.
29)" and Jesus replies "You believe at last! (v.31)."
In other words; the admonition is "Speak clearly,
speak plainly, know what you m , .- ... ,- 'We are
told "Simply, let your 'Yes' be 'Yes' and your 'No'
'No.' (John 5:37)" I might add, "Speak kindly"
as well.
In my residence in another country, I got
a parking ticket one day when I was delayed. I
picked it off of the windshield and read "We're
very sorry, but it seems you've overstayed your
time at this meter. We would appreciate your for
warding the amount of money ... to address this
situation and clear the records. Thank you." - I
was pleasantly taken aback: I had overstayed the

allotted time; but the tone was one of politeness
and not as adversarial as I first expected. The re-
sult was the same; I paid the required amount,
but the realization that the matter could be han-
dled kindly made a lot of difference.
I have listened to my share of language on the
street and often wonder if persons using all of the
expletives know what they mean.
Frankly, I doubt it. I remember a person calling
me a string of words one day; but I interrupted to
assure him that my parents were married in the
midst of his tirade. He stopped for a second and
looked. "Aha" I thought "he doesn't know what
the words he is using really mean."
When he slowed down I asked him if he was
using another word as a noun or .i, . ii - An-
ger communicated in words that were not even
known; no wonder people get violent and we
lose our ability to talk civilly with one another.
Speak simply, plainly, kindly.
There's Biblical reasons to do so; and the re-
wards for it can be great. It's better for the blood
pressure, too!

Trash-Filled Ships Find Few
Friends
BY PASTOR JOHN HICKS
First United Methodist Church
The Khain Sea was for a while the world's
most unwanted ship. No one wanted her. She
was the Hobo of the High Seas. She traveled for
27 months on a journey that took it to four con-
tinents where country after country declined to
accept the ship.
The problem was not the boat. Though rusty
and covered with barnacles, the 466-foot freighter
was seaworthy. The problem was not ownership.
The owners kept the license up and the taxes
paid. The problem was not the crew. They may
have felt unwanted, but they weren't inefficient.
The problem was what she was carrying.
It was trash - garbage, 13,000 tons of it. It was
the trash of Philadelphia's summer of 1986. Mu-
nicipal workers went on strike. Trash piled higher
and higher. Georgia refused it. New Jersey said no
way. No one wanted Philadelphia's trash.
That's when the Khain Sea entered into the
picture. The owners thought that they would turn
a quick buck by transporting the rubbish. The
trash was burned and the ashes were dumped

into the belly
of the ship. It
set off for the
Bahamas, but
they didn't
want it. Nei
their did Haiti,
Sri Lanka, Af
rica, or a host
of other na-
tions. No one
would take it. - .
Trash t
filled ships i
find few
friends.
Trash filled
hearts don't Pastor John Hicks
fare much
better.
Life has a
way of unloading garbage on our decks. UInex
pected delays, traffic, lines, rude people, whining
kids, tough times. The result - trash overflowing.
Load after load of anger. Guilt. Bitterness. Anxiety.
Impatience. Frustration. It all piles up.
Trash affects us. It contaminates our relation
ships. If you have trash on board, people are going
to smell it. The troubles for the Khain Sea began
with the first shovel full. The crew should have
turned it away at the gate. Life would have been
easier for everyone on board if they had never al
lowed the trash to pile up. Life will be better for
us if we do the same.
Our challenge is to protect the boat and refuse
entrance to anything that would garbage up our
lives.

Panther-Death Numbers Little Changed in 2010

BY GABRIELLA FERRARO
FWC
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC) documented 23 panther
deaths in 2010. Of those mortalities, 16 panthers
died after being struck by vehicles. Six of the
panther deaths are attributed to "intraspecific ag-
gression," or panthers killing other panthers. One
panther died of unknown causes.
This is very similar to 2009, when the FWC
documented 25 deaths, with 17 of those killed by
vehicles. The five year average is approximately
23 panthers per year, with an average of almost
14 killed each year by vehicles.
"Motorists should be aware that panthers
are not always struck in posted panther speed
zones," said Darrell Land, FWC biologist and
panther team leader. "We caution motorists to
be on the lookout for the large cats in wild areas
near panther zones, especially around sundown
and sunrise."
Panther speed zones are well-marked, with
speed limits reduced at night to 45 mph. Motorists
should be aware that violators often receive fines
exceeding $200 for their first offense, and any vio-
lation of more than 29 mph over the posted limit
will result in a mandatory court appearance.

"The FWC continues to work closely with the
Florida Department of Transportation to develop
measures that will increase motorist and panther
safety along Florida's roads," Land said.
Land also said the panther population has
been slowly increasing in Florida, which results in
the documentation of more dead panthers. Land
also noted the female panthers that were radio-
tagged during 2010 produced 29 kittens. The total
number of kittens born for the entire population
is unknown.
Florida panthers have been listed federally
as an endangered species since 1967 because of
the small, isolated population and habitat loss.
Recently the FWC completed a "Statement on
Estimating Panther Population Size," which notes
there are likely between 100 and 160 adult pan-
thers in South Florida.
"This number comes from combining sev-
eral science-based methods to provide a lower
and upper bound of the population," said Kipp
Frohlich, the FWC's Imperiled Species Section
leader. "This should be thought of as a theoretical
range that provides some insight into the possible
magnitude of the total population size. We are
continually seeking improved methods for deter-
mining the most accurate estimates."

Panther research and manage-
ment funding comes directly from the
additional fees collected when indi
viduals purchase the "Protect the Flor
ida panther" specialty license plate.
Money also goes to law enforcement
to increase patrols in the areas where
panthers reside in South Florida.
Panther specialty license plates
are available at local tax collectors'
offices across the state. For more in-
formation, go to FloridaPantherNet.
org and click on "Panther Pulse." To
report dead or injured panthers, call
the FWC's Wildlife Alert Hotline at
888-404-FWCC (3922).

Fog complicates morning commutes

Daily Operations Affected,
Plans Enacted

BY JUAN LOPEZ
Glades County Democrat

Much to everyone's consternation, the fog
that has slowed down commerce, traffic and dai-
ly operations all over South Florida has been per-
sistently bothersome for the past few weeks. The
causes of fog are quite simple but the fact of its
denseness and refusal to evaporate quickly is the
result of the off kilter weather patterns of 2010.
Joel Rothfuss, with the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration's Miami office, was
glad to comment on the unusual amount of fog
that has been hitting South Florida as of late.
"Simply put, fog is a cloud on the ground. Air
can hold water in the form of vapor. When the air
temperature cools to the dew point, the air can no
longer hold the water as vapor and water droplets
form. Since clouds are condensed water droplets,
you have your fog," he explained. "There are sev-
eral ways fog can form. Lately, with the fog that
has been prevalent, there is a lot of moisture on
the ground and we've had low temperatures."
According to Rothfuss, all you need is a warm
front to move in over the cold, damp surface for
fog to form.
"There is also the fact that last year we had
roller coaster weather conditions with a record
setting hot summer and then we had three major
freezes during the winter," he said. "Now, with
the recent warm air and cool, damp ground, you
have a perfect blend for thick fog."
Thick fog has even been forming over the
ocean with reports out of Naples of little to no
visibility during the morning hours. Even major
urban centers on the east coast of Florida have
had thick fog that has slowed down daily opera-
tions. U.S. 27 from South Bay to Alligator Alley has
been shut down four times so far due to the lack
of visibility created by the dense fog.
Locally, the fog has affected traffic and com-
merce minimally.
However, local districts have taken action to
keep students safe on the bus routes. District rules
exist that prohibit buses from running when vis-

ibility is obscured for 200 ft. or less and unsafe
conditions exist. Buses must pull off a safe dis-
tance from the roadway until conditions improve.
If the condition exist before morning routes be-
gin, bus drivers cannot begin their routes until
conditions improve.
Larry Worth, Transportation Director for near-
by Hendry County Schools, said last Friday that a
plan has been enacted for such a problem. The
plan is an emergency call out procedure.
"This procedure will be used when fog is so
dense that school buses cannot safely transport
students. The system will automatically call the
phone number on file for all bus students to ad-
vise parents that the buses will be delayed," said
Worth. "The system will hopefully be fully opera-

tion by next week. There are technical issues that
need to be worked out and they will be."
An announcement, prepared by Director
Worth, was sent home with all school students
this last week stating the procedure's implemen-
tation and tips for safe school commute. Such tips,
when the bus delay is too great, include parents
transporting their children) to school, waiting at
the bus stop with them, keeping them indoors
until bus arrives, and monitoring the phones for
district messages. Thankfully, if a student is late or
absent due to the fog, they will be excused.
There may be more delays on the horizon as
NOAA and weather services are predicting more
instances of fog as cold and warm fronts battle it
out over Florida for the next few weeks.

Glades County Tobacco-Free
Schools Policy
The Glades County Tobacco-Free Partnership
Tobacco-Free Schools Committee met with Jan-
ice Foster, Director of Exceptional Student Edu-
cation and Student Services, to discuss making
additions to the current Glades County Tobacco-
Free Policy.
This initiative is part of a statewide county
by county movement to improve tobacco-free
school policies, increase awareness of tobacco
use by students and staff at schools, and to better
enforce tobacco-free policies.
Many people do not know that there is not
a statewide law about tobacco in schools. The
Tobacco-Free Partnership has done some inves-
tigating into Glades County policies and their ef

fectiveness.
It was found that there was not a compre-
hensive policy at the county level. It was also
found that violations of the current policy have
occurred.
The goal of improving the policy is to focus
on creating a norm of tobacco free schools by
students, staff, and visitors. Also, by making
changes to the consequences of violating the
policy, the focus will be on corrective rather than
punitive measures.
Different options are being investigated for an
alternative to suspension program with a cessa-
tion component instead of out of school suspen-
sion. If you have any ideas, concerns, or would
like to join the Tobacco-Free Schools Committee
please contact Sarah Litchy the Tobacco Preven-
tion Coordinator for Glades County. 863-946-

Moore Haven Wrestling Team

Wins First Dual Meet Matches

Home Crowd
Encouragement was
a Factor

BY MARTIN ESPINOZA
Moore Haven Terriers
The Moore Haven Wrestling won its first ever
dual meet matches on Friday, Jan. 21, wrestling in
front of the student body. Encouragement by the
home crowd was a factor in the victories over The
Oasis School and Gateway Charter.
Aaron Lopez started the action for the Terri-
ers pinning his Oasis opponent at heavyweight in
1:37. Jesse Elrod was the next Terrier to dominate
an opponent, winning by pin in 58 seconds at
135 pounds. Donald Wilson won by pin at 140
pounds in a match that went back and forth for
almost six minutes. Ty Johnson won by pin in the
first period at 171 pounds.
Winning by forfeit against Oasis were Kyle
Hubbard, Kathleen Barfield, Preston Haynes, and
Matthew Baker.
Moore Haven defeated Gateway Charter 42-30.
Jesse Elrod and Kathleen Barfield won matches
by pin and Kyle Hubbard won by major decision.

Winning by forfeit for the Terriers were Aaron
Lopez, Matthew Walburn, Jo Platt, Brenie Freyer
muth, Preston Haynes, and Matthew Baker.
Results From Girls' State Tournament
Cypress Creek HS in Orlando was the host
for the Girls' State Wrestling Championships on
Saturday, Jan.22. Nearly 200 girls from across the
state competed.
Brendie Freyermuth placed fourth in the 171
pound division. After losing her first match, Brend
ie pinned her next two opponents to reach the
medal round. Her accomplishment was amazing
because prior to the event Brendie, an eleventh
grader, had only had three actual matches and
two months of training.
Kathleen Barfield was one of sixteen female
wrestlers at 103 pounds and the only eighth-
grader in the toughest weight class of the tour-
nament. She tied for seventh place. After losing
her first match, Kathleen pinned a girl from Lake
Mary but then lost to Jackie Montilla from Golden
Gate, the sixth place winner. Arelys Valles, from
Clewiston, placed fifth at 103 pounds. The tenth-
grader has an 18-6 record this year against male
competition.
Senior Jo Platt wrestled at 130 pounds and lost
to the eventual third and fifth place winners. Ex-
perience was the only thing that Jo lacked.

BY BARBARA OEHLBECK
It's an honest-to -goodness Florida native ...
that is a Glades County native, now celebrating
it's 32nd birthday, Saturday, Feb. 5.
The Ortona Cane Grinding Festival is held
every winter on the first Saturday in February at
the Indian Mound Park on Route 27 beginning at
10 a.m. for the benefit of the Ortona Fire Depart-
ment. Tickets in advance are only $7 for the great-
est barbecue in the Sunshine State! Pick up your
tickets at the Glades County Court House, Whis-
per Creek RV Park on Route 29 or at the Ortona
Fire Department, free parking for everyone. There
will be a fee for the tickets
The Ortona Cane Grinding barbecue is second
to none. After all, practice makes perfect and that
makes the difference! The Ortona firemen are
"professionals" when it comes to Cane Grinding
barbecue, both pork and chicken. And the por-
tions are more than generous: baked potato, cole
slaw, rolls, tea or coffee. And of course, you'll
want to go by the dessert hut for your favorite des-
sert (and 1,,, ,'i F,._. , 1., remember to get "extras"
to take home). The ladies of Ortona are "Florida's
very best" dessert-makers, cakes and pies and
other surprises.
This year's entertainment will be by the Blue
Grass Telegraph Creek Band and you'll delight in

seeing the performance of the Country Rhythm
Cloggers and seeing the actual cane grinding to
make real cane syrup which will be available for
sale. Fresh cane syrup has been a favorite "for
ever" in this part of the world; the Deep South,
that is. There are those who say there's none like
it anywhere else.
There will be the "favorite" drinks booth, along
with the Country Keepsakes booth, plus all sorts
of fine arts and crafts by some of Florida's finest
crafters. Festival booths are available for a fee. To
make a reservation please call 863-673-0530.
The 50-50 man will be here, there, and ev-
erywhere, which simply means that for all the
contributions made some lucky person will go
home with 50 percent, half that is, of all that's col-
lected!
Make your plans right now to enjoy all the
good things at the Larry Luckey Indian Mound
Park Festival, Saturday, Feb. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m., all for the benefit of the Ortona Fire Depart
ment.
As Larry Luckey, Glades County Property Ap-
praiser says, "Remember, bring a friend and a
chair!" and it's Larry Luckey himself who will be
the Master of Ceremonies.
By the way, Florida's "weather man has prom-
ised a beautiful blue bird day."

A Hat Reveals Who You Are

C -.

When you were a kid, you ate breakfast, din-
ner and supper. Well, the Glades County Wom-
an's Club and their guests enjoyed a "dinner,"
even though it was at noon, at the home of club
member Donna Storter Long recently. Donna
served ribs, perfectly barbecued by husband,
John, and all the trimmings to approximately
30 members and their guests. Prior to the meal,
each lady introduced herself, and told at least
five things about herself.
Woman's Club President Ann Coffey in-
formed the group of the projects that the club
funds. Their main project is to provide scholar-
ships (usually two) for graduating seniors from
Moore Haven High School. Two food baskets
were delivered to deserving families at Thanks-
giving, and Ann noted that all local food banks
are running low, and urged members to consid-
er donating food as one of their projects.
It was announced that two main fund rais-
ers for these projects are a luncheon and fash-
ion show and participation in Christmas on the
Caloosahatchee. The Club will participate in the
Cane Grinding Festival in Ortona again this year.
The Fashion Show and Luncheon will be
held on Saturday, Feb. 19, at M. Mobile Home
Resort, beginning at noon. Tickets are $10 and
include a wonderful meal and door prizes. The
lovely fashions modeled may be purchased, plus
there will be a 50/50 drawing.
Following dinner, the ladies were divided into
teams for a hilarious "Pony Express" - you'd
have to have been in the cheering section to fully
appreciate this horse race! All participants in the
Pony Express were awarded prizes.
Our hostess conducted a "Door Prize Yan-
kee Swap" and each lady could choose a pres-
ent. The really fun time was when she decided
whether to keep it or take another lady's pres-

ent. This writer won and lost a can of PAM sev
eral times.
Each guest had been asked to wear a hat
of some sort, and believe me there were all
sorts, from Donna's wedge of cheese to Bobbi
Brown's pink cabbage rose-literally a cabbage
sized rose. No Kentucky Derby Day ever sported
more unusual hats! Bobbi gave a brief history of
hats, and then conducted a "Hat Contest." Win-
ners of the hat contests were as follows, Pretti-
est: Diana Winiecke who wore a crocheted pic-
ture style hat trimmed in crocheted roses, and
Darlene Tompkins who had decorated a garden
hat with flowers and greenery.
Most Outrageous: Ann Baker whose hat was
a Seminole Indian doll with her skirt covering a
straw hat, and Diane Cianfrani who sported a
black hat topped with a cap crowned with black
and grey fur. Most indicative of their personal
ity: Margaret Brown wearing an ivory creation
trimmed in gold ribbon and a large gold rose,
and Bette Davis whose sky blue hat featured
flowers all around the rim.
As Donna and Bobbi did not participate in
the contest, as part of her presentation, Bobbi
said a hat indicates something about the wearer.
She asked the ladies "If you met us on the street
wearing these hats, what would they indicate to
you about Donna and me?" Their answers were
as much fun as the rest of the day had been!
Glades County Woman's Club has diverted
from the annual Membership Tea by hostesses
choosing to have a luncheon, a brunch and now
a barbecue - and all agree a "fun time was had
by all!"
A member must sponsor a prospective mem-
ber, so if you would like to join the Glades Coun-
ty Woman's Club, please talk to a member.

Why is there smoke in the sky?

Christmas in Lakeport

The Florida Division of Forestry was ap-
proached by Glades County Emergency Man-
agement to conduct a prescribed burn on Curry
Island. Curry Island has an extensive wildfire his-
tory. In the past wildfires on Curry Island would
shut down S.R. 78 and threaten the residents of
Lakeport. This year fire officials took a proactive
approach by coordinating an interagency pre-
scribed fire.
On January 24 and 25 both structural and
wildland firefighters use the Northern Wind com-
ponent to burned 1,000 acres. The passing cold
front allows firefighters the opportunity to use a
steady north wind and lower humidity following
the front to their favor. By using the lower humid-
ity's following the front, burning can be done ef
fectively. Firefighters are also using the predicted
rainfall to assist in extinguishment of the smolder-
ing . *_., I .i ... that is causing the smoke.
Glades County residents experienced smoke
Tuesday night and well into Wednesday after-
noon. They were asked to use caution when driv
ing in this area. In the future, what you should do
if you encounter smoke on Florida's Highways:

* Slow down!
* Use windshield wipers in heavy fog.
* Turn on your low-beam headlights.
* If the fog or smoke becomes so thick that
you cannot see well enough to keep driving, pull
all the way off the pavement and stop. Turn on
your emergency flashers.
* The space between a vehicle and the road-
way should be sufficient so that occupants can
safely exit the vehicle without. ii ,i. , 1. i i .-: traffic.
* Report the hazard to the nearest Florida
Highway Patrol office so that steps can be taken
to warn other motorists.
Residents that have sensitivity to smoke,
please stay inside. If you experience inhalation
problems, talk to your doctor or call 911. The
Division of Forestry apologizes for any inconve-
nience. The group is hoping to prevent home and
property loss. Anyone needing additional infor
nation may contact the local Division of Forestry
at 772-260-0053 (St. Lucie, Indian River, Martin,
Okeechobee Counties) 863-655-6407 (Highlands
and Glades Counties). Please visit the website at

Lakeport Community Association held their
annual Christmas Dinner on Dec. 11. It was evi-
dent that Santa's Helpers had been hard at work.
Both the inside and outside of the Center was
aglow with Christmas decorations.
The children were greeted at the door with
door prize tickets, jingle bells and the opportunity
to have a Christmas tattoo. Entertainment was
provided by the Lakeport Gators Kid's Club, di-
rected by Patty Gavin from Maple Grove Baptist
Church. A -,iii. i -r,1, dinner was provided by
local merchants and we would like to thank ev-
eryone who donated to this event. The sounds of
sirens announced the arrival of our special guests!
The children excitedly rushed to greet Mr. & Mrs.
Santa Claus. Each child had the opportunity to tell

we gave thanks for the opportunity to share an-

mitment of people in the community of Lakeport,
we were able to make this a special time for all of
our residents.
We would like to thank everyone who donat

and took the beautiful photos for us to share. We
appreciate each and every one of you! We have a
lot of things planned for the upcoming year and
hope you will plan on joining us. Sour Orange

Accident Leaves One

Critically Injured

Two-Car Accident Involved
Four Occupants

BY JOSE JESUS ZARAGOZA
Glades County Democrat
An accident in Moore Haven left at least one
person critically injured when a vehicle t boned
into another on Sunday evening, reported the
Florida Highway Patrol.
According to information released by the
agency, a 2007 Chevy Tahoe carrying driver
Yenny Sifuentes, 32, and Christopher Sifuentes,
16, both from Moore Haven, had been traveling
south on U.S. 27, attempting to make a left turn
on C.R. 720, when the accident happened.
The second vehicle involved, a 2011 Toyota
Sienna carrying driver Martha Sofia-Leyva, 50
and Rafael Leyva, 78, both from Kissimmee, was
northbound on the same road, just south of the
first vehicle.

Crash Investigator Trooper M.T. Steele wrote
that the first vehicle failed to observe the second,
pulling out across the northbound lanes. The
oversight triggered the wreck, with the front of
the second vehicle plowing into the side of the
first.
Both cars came to rest on the east shoulder
of U.S. 27.
All of the occupants involved were trans-
ported to Hendry Regional Medical Center in
Clewiston for treatment of their injuries. Injuries
reported by FHP included for the occupants of
the Chevy Tahoe, with Yenny suffering injuries
listed as serious.
Martha, the driver of the Toyota Sienna, suf
fered no injuries, while her passenger, Rafael,
sustained critical injuries.
According to the information, all of the oc-
cupants of the vehicles were wearing their seat
belts at the time of the accident.
Charges are pending.

place that they perceived it to be."
Echols welcomed the community to see the
building, assuring them that they will be im-
pressed. He said residents should give the depart-
ment a chance for their business.
"We don't have a pharmacy or private doctor.
It's a nice facility. We want to find more doctors
that want to work out of a facility of this caliber,"
he added.
Health Department officials said the facility
is open to everyone including those with private
health insurance.
In the days leading up to the completion of
the building, Wendell Taylor commented that the
building would be a great addition to the county
and Moore Haven. Aside from offering a wider
range of services, the new building will be Ameri-
can Disabilities Act (ADA) and Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) com
pliant. The old building was not. He further com
mented to the overall purpose of the building.
"We have a moral responsibility to ensure that
these people - regardless of their ability to speak,
write or ask - we have an obligation to help them
meet their critical needs," Mr. Taylor said. "What
it's about is knowing you made a difference in
their health."
Pat Dobbins, Glades County Health Depart-
ment Director, discussed the necessity for the new
building, her eagerness for it's completion and
the difficulties that were faced before the building
opened. There had been no concerns over not
finding adequate staffing but being able to pay
for them. Since the department reported 50 to 60

percent uncompensated clients - patients who
are unable to pay for treatment - the center was
not earning enough to help pay for staffing. The
problem has been addressed with various forms
of funding, including county and state funds.
In the weeks before the grand opening, Pat
Dobbins, along with staffers, were going through
dry runs to test patient flow in order to maximize
efficiency and time spent with patients. A board
was created with Glades County residents man-
ning it and the application was prepared to make
the building a federally qualified health center.
The value of this is that it can bring in more funds
for more staffers as well as have a co-pay of $15
to $20. Staff at the center are also working on hav-
ing an electronic health records database that will
allow detailed medical histories to be accessed
in seconds. Access computers are going to be in-
stalled in the lobby to allow patients to apply for
Medicaid.
Overall the $5 million was completed on time,
under budget and is three times larger than the
original building, at 18,000 total sq. ft. It also in-
cludes a community room in the rear for meet
ings. A dentistry staff will be fully on board in
February.
County Manager Taylor said state officials saw
the conditions that the citizens of this community
had to live with for a long time and wanted to
help out. He said most of the money came from
hurricane disaster assistance.
"We got busy in March, 2010. We made the
builders and architect a promise. We have $5.1
million to spend and we have to build it by the
end of 2010," Mr. Taylor said. "Here's the door, if
you can't live up to those standards, go out to U.S.
27, either way will take you out of town. We did it.
Glades County, yes we can."
Jennifer Haman contributed to this article.
