Moore Haven Terriers Honored Their Seniors

Graduating Varsity
Players Honored
BY KATHY BELSER
Moore Haven Terriers
The Terriers wrapped up their 2010
football season, and with it, the senior
players saw the end to their varsity foot
ball careers.
The school honored the seniors, at
a half time ceremony, held at the Terri-
ers final game on Nov. 12. The names
of each senior was announced, along
with a brief description of their achieve-
ments, qualities, and a few other attri-
butes. They were escorted by family
or friends, as they walked one by one,
before the huge crowd.
The comments made, as each of
the senior football players were in
produced, were jotted down by this
reporter. It was during this time that
a broader picture of the Terrier foot
ball team began to emerge and with it
came a deeper insight and understand-
ing of the 2010 Terrier football team.
If one were to listen to football
coverage on any level during the pre-
season or post season, you will note
the importance placed on the seniors

RELIGIOUS COLUMNS

The Bible And
Our Founding Fathers
BY JACKIE MILLER, EVANGELIST
First Christian Church
Thanksgiving Week is also "National
Bible Week" in America. Our Founding
Fathers made the Bible a significant part
of our nation's laws. The Political Science Dept. of
the University of Houston collected 15,000 pieces
of writings by the Founders to see what motivated
their writings. Of the 15,000 pieces researched,
the Bible was quoted 16 times more often than
any other outside sources.
According to David Barton in his book, The
Myth of Separation, "Thirty-four percent of all
quotes by the Founders were taken straight from
Scripture. Furthermore, another 60 percent of
the Founders' quotes were simply quotes of men
who had quoted the Bible. In total, the research-
ers discovered that 94 percent of the Founders'
quotes came either directly or indirectly from
God's Word. Perhaps that is what drove President
Washington to state that, "It would be impossible
to rightly govern the world without God and the
Bible."
Did you know that when the Founders were
contemplating the idea behind the branches
of government they took their cues from Isaiah
33:22? "For the Lord is our Judge, the Lord is our
Lawmaker, the Lord is our King." Tax exemption
for churches was taken from a passage in Ezra
7:24: "Also, we inform you, that it shall not be
lawful to impose tax, tribute, or custom on any of
the priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple
servants, or servants of the house of God."
With so much practical information in the
Bible, why is it that our lawmakers have such dis-
dain for God's inerrant word? Could it be that we
as a nation have become wise in our own ways?
Paul writes in Romans 1:21, "Although they knew
God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were
thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and
their foolish hearts were darkened."
It takes a humble spirit on behalf of our law
makers to realize they don't have all the answers.
The scriptures transcend time and can indeed
share a lot of light on key issues we are facing
today in our society.

Come on, Ring Those Bells
BY PASTOR JOHN HICKS
First United Methodist Church
The year was 1863, and writer Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow was grieving the
Christmas holiday without a son he had
lost in the devastating war between the states. In
the midst of his grief and what was happening,
Wadsworth wrote one of his best known poems,
"Christmas Bells."
"I heard the bells on Christmas Day, their old,
familiar carols play. And wild and sweet the words
repeat of peace on earth, good will to men!"
But the bells were drowned out with cannon
fire. "Then from each black, accursed mouth the
cannon thundered in the South. And with the
sound the carols drowned, of peace on earth,

goodwill to men!"
It struck a note of pain and loss as he thought
of the many who had lost sons like him: "It was as
if an earthquake rent the hearth stones of a con-
tinent. And made forlorn the households born of
peace on earth, good will to men! And in despair
I bowed my head; "There is no peace on earth,"
I said. "For hate is strong and mocks the song of
peace on earth, good will to men!"
In the midst of all of this, there came to his
ears the ringing of bells once more. A church
was ringing in Christmas Day. Each toll of the bell
brought a renewed hope to Longfellow's heart:
"Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: "God
is not dead; nor doth he sleep! The wrong shall
fail, the right prevail, with peace on earth, good
will toward men!"
Throughout history, in times of peace and in
times of war, in good times and in bad times, in
easy times and in hard time, hope is what carries
us through. The ringing of the church bells was
not much of a sign by the world's standards, but
it was enough to be a sign of hope for Longfellow,
even in the midst of hopelessness. Every year at
Christmas time, we are reminded of God's great
gift of hope and promise for each of us. Christ-
mas may not be much of a sign by the world's
standards, but for those who believe, it is a sign
of great hope. "The people who walked in dark-
ness have seen a great light; those who dwell in a
land of deep darkness on them light has shined"
(Isaiah 9:2). With the coming of this light there is
hope. As the Christmas carols sing out: "A thrill of
hope, the weary world rejoices; for yonder breaks
a new and glorious morn!" So, "Come on, ring

Thanksgiving 2010: Recalling
God's Presence With Us
BY REV SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+
Saint Martin's Church
A few years back, when the hurricanes
struck our coast and utilities were dis-
Supted, people were complaining about
the interruptions of electricity and other services.
Representatives of the utilities explained they had
priorities; institutions that took care of the sick,
the infirm, those unable to help themselves and
emergency services police, fire, EMT, public
works. Most people understood. One lady com-
plained "Am I going to be the last person to get
my electricity back?" The answer may well have
been "Perhaps!" but she seemed to miss some-
thing. Those who were charged with restoration
were doing their best.
There is another story about a disaster and
flooding. It was far greater than what happened
to our coast; in fact, the whole known world was
flooded. Lives were destroyed wholesale and it
wasn't for a few days; it went on for weeks. One
man and his family were saved, along with other
living creatures. You may recall the story of Noah
(Genesis 6ff). The story, as the Bible recounts it
to us, tells us of what Noah did when all the wa-
ters finally subsided. He built an altar (chapter 8,

v. 20). This was not an act of complaining; it was
an act of thanksgiving. There was a recognition
that God had -.ii. him through the greatest of
disasters, and he was grateful. As I look around
and see how difficult things might be, and how
God has been with us and carried us through, I
am moved to take the example of Noah.
There always seems to be something to com-
plain about; but how many times we miss the
opportunities to see all of the things we can be
thankful about. Are we still surrounded by friends
and loved ones? Do we still continue on; even if it
may not be as comfortable or as lavish as it once
was (or as we might like it)? Do we have access
to many of the things and parts of life that did not
exist just a few years ago?
One Thanksgiving as I was sharing in a com-
munity worship service, one of the officials stand-
ing next to me said "You know, people today re-
ceiving public assistance have it much better than
my parents did, and they worked a lot harder and
longer than many who are working today." They
probably worked longer and for many of them,
under much more dangerous conditions, too. No,
there is no shortage of things and conditions for
which we can be thankful during this special sea-
son and on this special day.
The lesson of Noah applies to all of us and
as we celebrate Thanksgiving, it would be appro-
priate to do it at an altar, too. We don't have to
build one; there are many around thanks to our
spiritual ancestors. We can give thanks for the
heritage they left us too; and take a lesson from
them. In spite of all that may seem to have been
hard; Thanksgiving is about who we are.

Lake Okeechobee Weekly Fishing Report

Wow, what another great week
fishing here on Lake Okeechobee!
The bass have really moved in from

excite you? Well, it sure does me and

to five-pound bass with it all I can say
is that Lake Okeechobee is one awe-
some fishery. The weather has been
good with cool nights and warm days.
We could use a little less wind but
then that's fishing here in South Flor
ida through the winter months. The
lake level continues to drop and is at
13.13 feet above sea level. I sure hope
that we can keep some of the water in

ing a nice Okeechobee bass.

the lake that we have, but I'm sure the
sugar farmers will be taking a lot of wa-
ter in the future months. You will need

to start being careful with
your boat out on the lake
with this water level con-
tinuing to drop and making
shallow rocky areas hard
on boats and motors. If in
doubt about running your
boat, just idle toward the
main lake, it only takes a
few extra minutes to get to
deeper safer water.
The bass fishing with
wild shiners has been off
the hook this week with
MARKKING the outside grass line clos-
h is hold- est to the main lake being
the place to be. Areas like
the East Wall, Coots Bay,
Long Point, and the shoal
up around Observation Island all being
good areas. Most of the guides out of

Roland Martin's Marina have been us-
ing between five and seven dozen shin-
ers for a full day of fishing and there are
days we have been coming back in and
getting more. If throwing artificial lures
is what you like to do, then be pre-
pared to catch bass and lots of them.
For artificial lure selection this week
a Zara Spook or Spro Frog worked
great for that topwater bite along with
a Gambler Big EZ for retrieving across
the heavier grass. But most of the bass
my clients caught this week came on a
Gambler Ace pitched around the reed
heads on the outside grass line, or in
i. .. i .-_, on the shoal around Turn-
er's Cove. I have been fishing all of my
lures on braided line so that I can get
the bass out of the heavy cover. I like
using Diamond Braid line in fifty- or
sixty pound test. This line is round and

will not frustrate you like other lines
that are flat and pulling down in the
spool, and with it being round you can
really make some long casts to get into
those spots that the fish are in.
The crappie bite has picked up
some and the rim canal, Harney Pond
Canal, point of the reef, and the lake
end of Uncle Joe's cut are all good ar
eas to try. The snow birds are back and
we will all want to be more careful and
courteous out on the lake. We all want
to have a safe and fun time out on the
water. Until next week good luck and
tight lines out on our great lake.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

BY PAT DOBBINS
Hendry/Glades Health Departments
Family history of diabetes increases the risk
for i. .1. 1._., i. i. ,- Take steps now to pre-
vent diabetes in future. Many people who develop
type 2 diabetes have one or more family mem-
bers with the disease. While you can't change
your family history, you can share your family's
health history with your doctor or other health
care provider. This can be your first important
preventative step.
Diabetes is a disease where the body doesn't
produce insulin or when your body doesn't use
insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone that your
body needs to convert sugar, starches and other
foods into energy, and of course we all need en-
ergy for our daily lives!
When a person has diabetes, they also have
an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney
disease, or blindness. There is no known cure
for diabetes, but there is treatment. Diet, exercise
and new medicines can prevent or delay much
of the illness and complications of diabetes. Did
you know that there is also something known as
pre-diabetes?
Pre-diabetes is a blood glucose level higher
than normal, but not high enough to be diag-
nosed as diabetes. Askyour doctor abo .ii_. n,.:
tested.
The Florida Department of Health (DOH) has
partnered with the National Diabetes Education
Program (NDEP) during November, which is Na-
tional Diabetes Awareness Month, to share the
important message about knowing one's family

- '1 ...
history of diabetes.
More than one million Floridians are living
with diabetes. Approximately one-third of people
with diabetes don't know they have the disease,
and people with undiagnosed diabetes may ex-
perience damage to the heart, eyes, kidneys, and
limbs without experiencing any symptoms.
People can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by
losing a small amount of weight and becoming
more active.
Action steps that can benefit the health of all
family members include making healthy food
choices and being physically active at least 30
minutes per day for five or more days per week.
Take action now! Get at least 30 minutes of
physical activity every day. Dance, walk the dog,

- f
play with your kids, eat healthier, learn serving
sizes. Do as your mom told you ... eat your veg-
etables!
To learn more about family health history and
1. type 2 diabetes, take a look at NDEP's
risk tests in English and Spanish. Visit www.Your-
Diabeteslnfo.org or call 1-888-693-NDEP (6337);

Fighting Wildfires the Division of Forestry Way
The Division of Forestry stationed in Glades County showed this reporter around their Palmdale Forestry Site and the
equipment that they use to combat wildfires. Above: the John Deere 550 tractor crawler with a tow plow for creating
firelines to separate fuels (i.e. brush, grass, trees, etc.) and trap the fire. Below, left: The tractor in action as Ranger Luis
Aguilar plows through the growth giving a demonstration of how a fireline is made. Below, right: Ranger Aguilar demon-
strates how to use an Alidade that is still part of the firetower on the Palmdale Forestry Site. Such towers are mostly out
of use as the new method of patrolling for fires is by aircraft.

Seniors
Continued From Page 1

Janadrian Bettard "Pep" never
played but was an inspiration to the
players for his perseverance.
If you look into the actual experi-
ence the senior members had going
into the season, you .o _., i ,i1.. ii .
derstanding of the team. If a team does
not have players with the experience
of playing under pressure in crucial
games and handling difficult situations,
then they must rely solely on what they
have been told by the coaching staff
and their sheer athletic abilities.
The Terriers seniors averaged 2 3
yrs. of football and 1 2 yrs. of varsity
experience. They were fortunate to
have one player, Hunter Ward, with 6
yrs., the most overall and varsity play
ing experience.
The seniors can offer more than
game experience, they can lead by
their example or be a vocal leader and
motivator for their teammates. The Ter

riers Alberto Pardo is one of the most
dedicated and hard workers on the
team and in turn he leads by example.
The offensive vocal leader was senior
Bersain Hererra Jr., and he also led by
example through his almost perfect
attendance. In just one year of play-
ing varsity football, senior Keivon Bell
stepped up to become one of the team
leaders.
The seniors offered something
unique and needed to the Terrier pro-
gram and they did this with a group of
seniors that only produced one 4 year
letterman.
It was only after learning the back-
ground on these seniors and their play-
ing history did this reporter understand
the significance of their achievements,
and the teams inability to overcome
some of the barriers that confronted
them this season.
The seniors depart with the first
winning season since 2003. The team

will lose such seniors as Hunter Ward;
who broke the school record for the
longest interception for a TD, and other
seniors that are noted for some memo-
rable plays.
In the aftermath that follow the cel-
ebration of their victory, in their final
game of their varsity career, this report
er took the opportunity to speak with a
few of the senior players and their fam-
ily members.
In speaking with Keivon Bell, Jaime
Juarez, their parents and the father of
Hunter Ward, the word excited was
one feeling that was unanimously felt
among the seniors and their families.
The interviews centered around
what the seniors and their families
were feeling at this moment, when it
was all coming to an end, and what
they hoped for the future. The chance
to further their education was the most
common wish made by parent and
child. The most profound, yet simple
statement, came from, King Bell, the
father of Kevion Bell.
It was Mr. Bell's wish to see his
son further his education, but he felt it
was equally important for his son "to

become a good citizen and everything
else will fall into place."
The sons and parents both remark-
ably attributed the time spent playing
football was what had helped them
gain life skills. The dedication, hard
work, friendships and dealing with ad-
versity are just a few of the things they
will take away from their time spent as
a Terrier.
The final question, asked of Jaime
Juarez, was what he regretted or what
he would pass on to the younger play-
ers that he wished he would have
known or applied. He took very little
time in giving a very heart-felt reply,
through tears he managed to keep
from falling.
He responded "I wish I had just
one more year. I would have stayed on
my school work and would listen and
do what coach tells me. I would work
harder and listen. Coach Belser really
helped me to change. Before he came
I did not care, I was lazy and did not
have any goals. He made me want to
do better and he knows what it takes to
do it. I didn't keep my school work up
and wish I had just one year left cause

I would make the most of it with what
I know now. I am so thankful to have
had Coach Belser and all he taught me
has made me want to be better and go
on with my education and hopefully
play college football."
I may have been the reporter, but as
the wife of the coach, I had to fight my
tears. It is always hard to have to learn
things the hard way, but what I derived
from my interview with this player, was
his sincere happiness that he had the
opportunity to learn the lesson and his
wish was to pass it on to his teammates
in hopes that they will listen.
The Terriers are loosing an incred-
ible group of young men and will
need someone to step up and fill their
shoes.
They still have talent and speed
but the experiences from all they went
through this season will be just as im-
portant. If they will take heed from their
teammate, they will stay on top of their
education, listen to the coach, work
hard, make the very most of their time
left and maybe they can depart without
ai., -_i. 1i i, i aches in their hearts when
it all comes to an end.
