Theresa Brooks of Buckhead Ridge has a
unique, one-of a-kind mailbox. Actually, she has
two versions of the same mailbox. The affinity for
interesting mailbox design may have come from
her late husband, Frank, who had once seen a
mailbox built to resemble an airplane in Indiana.
Mr. Brooks nickname was "Snoopy the Pilot."
"He was an amazing man," Mrs. Brooks said
of her husband, who passed away eight years
ago.
Since he and his wife were both pilots and he
worked in an automobile body shop, it seemed
natural for him to build a replica of the airplane
mailbox.


Mr. Brooks worked from a photograph.
In a Jan. 9, 1993 interview with the Okeecho
bee News, he said the materials cost about $100
and he estimated it took more than 100 hours to
complete the project.
The front part is a standard mailbox. The tail
and wings are made of aluminum and the wing
struts are steel. The aircraft is held 1t ... i.. I with
400 rivets. The rivets and seams are covered with
fi ,, i,.- A toy Alf is the pilot. When asked in
the 1993 interview why Alf was used, he replied
"I couldn't find a Snoopy."
Mrs. Brooks said their letter carrier had seen
a magazine article about the opening of the Na
tional Postal Museum, a Smithsonian Institution
museum in Washington D.C. that would feature
unusual mailboxes. The letter carrier sent in a pic
ture of the Brooks' mailbox and it was selected to

one window in a home needed replacement,
would all windows have to be replaced to green
standards, and Ms. Villafuerte responded that the
whole house would be inspected and any need
ed improvements would be required including
all windows and insulation. She noted that such
improvements will reduce the energy costs for
the homeowner, and adopting these standards
will increase our points in the grant approval pro
cess.

However, Mrs. Brooks said her husband did
not want to give up the original mailbox, so he
made a replica to donate to the museum. Mrs.
Brooks said the second airplane mailbox hung
in the Okeechobee post office for several weeks
before being sent to Washington. Even though
her husband was recovering from surgery, Mrs.
Brooks said he flew, against doctor's orders, to
Washington with her for the grand opening of the
museum in 1993.
At the grand opening they met a man from
Jacksonville who had built a mailbox to resemble
a mail delivery truck. His mailbox was also on dis
play. Mrs. Brooks has a scrapbook of photographs
of the construction of the mailbox and the grand
opening of the museum. She said that through
the years people who knew them would go to
Washington. When they returned they would ask
if that was their mailbox on display.


The original airplane mailbox served as the
Brooks' mail receptacle for about 10 years. Then
Mrs. Brooks said it was taken down for fear of
weather damage and vandalism. Now she re-
ceives mail in a standard mailbox that is painted
red and has an airplane painted on the side of it.
The mailbox post is an actual airplane propeller.
"I never thought I would see it again," Mrs.
Brooks said of the mailbox that went to Wash
ington. However, she said they had a contract
that stated that if the mailbox was ever taken off
display, it would be given back. Recently the mu
seum changed the display and the mailbox was
returned. So now Mrs. Brooks has two airplane
mailboxes. She said she is thinking of mounting
the one that went to Washington in the entrance
way of her house.
It is evident that the Brooks were both pilots.
The home is decorated with airplane memorabil
ia and the outside of the house bears a sign: "No
Trespassing Airport Property."

Don't be a Thanksgiving

Turkey

No one wants to
be a turkey. Being
called a turkey takes
on an even deeper
meaning when you
realize the fact that
commercially grown
turkey is not one of
nature's most intel
ligent creatures. As
a matter of fact, the
domesticated turkey Pastor John Hicks
has been described
as being "as brain
less as a baseball."
Even drinking can put a strain on turkey intelli
gence. If a turkey is outdoors, looking up at the
sky when it starts to rain, it can drown. They're
often not smart enough to close their mouths in
the rain. No one wants to be a turkey.
But at least the turkey has an excuse for be
ing "bird brained." There is less excuse for us
human beings. Take the nine lepers Luke writes
about in Luke 17. Jesus had healed them from a
disgusting, painful, and unsightly skin disease. It
was a tremendous gift; even more so in that Jesus
had made it possible for them to re enter society
and reunite with their families. Ten lepers were
healed, but only one leper, and a Samaritan at
that, came back and said, "Thanks."
Talk about turkeys! Ten received God's bless
ing, but only one stopped to say thanks.
What about us? Thanksgiving Day is here. In
which group will we be found? Amongst the nine
who took their blessing and walked off or with
the one who came back to thank God?
If we want to avoid being "turkeys" this
Thanksgiving, the behavior of that tenth leper
might prove instructive.


We are not meant to keep our blessings to
ourselves. "Thanks" is only half of the word. "Giv
ing" is the other half.
We can make generous giving a part of our
thanks-giving. Remember, I. i l;... we feed the
hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked,
visit the sick or the prisoner, it's the same thing
as doing it for Jesus (Matthew 25:31). The tenth
leper may not have had much, but in his gratitude
he shared what he had to give.
This Thanksgiving, don't be a turkey. In Eng
lish, the word "think" and the word "thank" both
come from the same root. Nine out of ten forgot
to think and forgot to thank God for their bless
ings. But the tenth leper saw his blessings, gave
thanks for his blessings, and shared his blessings.
So can we.


hanksgiving is a thoroughly American
Holiday and a thoroughly religious one
as well. It was begun by early European
settlers to this continent as an act of devotion to
the God whom they loved and who they believed
had provided for them through difficult times.
In recent times, however, the Holiday has
fallen on hard times, as our country has turned
more and more away from the God our Puritan
forefathers loved and worshiped. The Pilgrims are
characterized today as political dissenters who are
lauded for their bold break with a repressive polit
ical regime in England. But their Christian found
tions and their desire to seek a place where they
could worship the God of the Bible are almost
totally ignored by textbooks and removed by law
from the attention of the American people. We
are being sold a politically correct bill of goods.
The truth is that the Pilgrims and many of the
other early settlers in America were devoutly re
ligious people. They were concerned about the
lack of spirituality in their countries, and they de
sired to bring a new vitality to their new spiritual
lives. When forbidden by their governments to


worship as they saw fit and when persecuted be
cause they continued to do so, they fled to a place
where they thought they would be safe from gov
ernment interference in their lives. In the "New
World" they laid the foundation of a Christian way
of life that thrived for .-l' ., -
Now that spiritual foundation is being threat
ened by the very people who have benefited so
much from the principles they now decry. We
must be firm in our convictions that our founding
fathers were not wrong in their commitment to
Jesus Christ.
If we are to remain strong and free to worship
God as our forefathers intended, we must cling
firmly to the values and traditions that gave our
forefathers their courage. And we must seek after
the God who alone can keep us holy and blame
less before Him.

to put Jesus on the
spot.
They cite an imaginary example: a man is
married, he dies without children, leaving his
wife, and by law she goes to the next brother.
That brother also dies childless and she is left to


the next brother, and then he dies. This widow
marries seven brothers, according to the Saddu
cees' example, and then they ask who will be her
husband in Heaven? Their appeal? "Well, after all,
it's the law!" and that is what is required. Whose
wife is she in Heaven? The answer from Jesus?
It's not a question of the law; it's a question of
having our own special place in Heaven. His an
swer is about living, living without the constraints
of a limiting law but rather living in harmony with
God. And isn't that what marriage is finally about,
and what love is all about?
The answer Jesus gives gets at the heart of
the matter; it isn't as if marriage is some magical
state conferred by a blessing, but it's about our
relationship with others. We speak of 11I. -..1. :
of a marriage" suggesting that it must already ex
ist first before the blessing is given. This is not a
legal sense of binding that the Sadducees allude
to in their question. The answer given "...in the
resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are
given in marriage (Luke 20:35)."
The reply is in terms of our relations with one
another, not about contracts, holds we think we
may have, rights, conditions or some pronounce
ment by a religious body. I've always thought to
rn,., ii '. i, i. .. 1ii this poor woman?!" No free
dom of choice? Getting the same family with all
of the quirks and foibles that one would have to
learn to live with, over and over and over! Jesus'
answer gives her a breath of freedom; she's not
married to any of them in Heaven (maybe she re
ally would have thanked God for a big favor.)
I'm sure we'll have special relationships with
others in our lives when Heaven begins; I look
forward to seeing friends, some of my family, get
ting to know those who were a part of my life
even before I was born on this earth, and mar
riage partners will be among those who will have
had a place and part. But to be married?
Apparently not; and that may not be a bad
thing for some people. In the meantime, I sa
vor those special relationships among all who
have touched my life in a special way during this
earthly lI._-I ....i -., I thank God for them, enjoy
their blessings, and know they will be special in
Heaven, too. But married? The Lord knows best!

Bass Fishing Heats Up

Are you looking to catch some nice bass or
two? Then Lake Okeechobee is the place to be
now as the weather continues to cool off and the
bass fishing heats up.
Bass fishing with wild shiners and artificial
lures has been really good and seem to be only
getting better by the day.
The Office Depot Foundation held a tourna
ment last week out of Roland Martin's Marina.
Guide Jerry Wares guided his participants to a
win with over 27 pounds in five bass while my
guys finished fourth with 21 pounds.
That is pretty strong for this time of the year
and the fishing should only get better going into
winter here on Okeechobee.
This was a charity event to raise money for


the National Backpack program that supplies un
derprivileged children with backpacks filled with
pencils, paper, and other school needs. NASCAR

on Lake Okeechobee to fish this event.
The bass are still holding on the outside grass
line but a few are starting to move back in the
thicker grass toward spawning areas.
My clients caught bass fishing Gambler Big
EZ swimbaits along the outside grass from Long
Point to Ritta Island last week with most of the
bass in the two to four-pound range.
We also started the mornings out throwing a
Zara Super Spook in the open water areas around
the reed heads and caught quite a few bass be
fore moving back into the heavier grass to spend
the rest of the day.
I have also been catching bass pretty good
on 10" worms and Gambler Aces weighted with


1/16 ounce screw in sinkers to get a slow fall with
these baits. Some other areas that have been
good are the North Shore around Horse Island,
from Uncle Joe' Cut up to Cochran's Pass, and
the Monkey Box.
Some of these areas will depend on the wind
direction and speed but they all seem to clean up
quick after the wind slows down. I think that with
the water level below 13.5 feet above sea level,
that it doesn't get some much wave action as it
does when the water level is up.
We should really have clear water in most ar
eas to fish this winter, I just hope it doesn't go too
low to get back in to where the bass are.
The dynamite holes and rim canal are still
holding some bass and on windy days these areas
can be really good and a lot easier than trying to
fish out on the main lake in strong winds.
There have been some crappies showing up


around the point of the reef, the lake end of Uncle
Joe's Cut, and the rim canal around the Moore
Haven area. Jigs and minnows are both working
real well, with chartreuse and green jigs working
good.
The snowbirds are back so we will all want to
show some courtesy out on the water and at the
boat ramps.
Instead of complaining about how long it
takes for some of them to launch their boat ask
them if the want some help or tell them where
they can catch some fish out on the water, there
is plenty for all of us to catch.

*The third Thursday of every month there is


a United Way House program in Moore Haven
at the Community Development Building. The

County residents with their electric bill. House
holds must be within 150 percent poverty income

Tobacco Free Partnership

Meeting
Today, Nov. 18, the Glades County Tobacco
Free Partnership will be meeting at 3 p.m. in the
Moore Haven High School Library. At this meet
ing, discussion will be the next steps in various
policy goals and will continue to form commit
tees in order to re-organize the partnership into
an action-oriented group. Everyone is welcome
to attend this meeting, as they are trying to grow
the partnership and gather new ideas and sup

New Park in Muse
Members of the Muse Community Association showed their appreciation Nov.
9 to the Glades County Commissioners, staff and residents whose hard work
made a lovely neighborhood park possible. Located behind the Muse Fire
Department, the three-acre park is a magnet for kids and older folks who are
looking for a little fun outside. Colorful playground equipment, tables, bench-
es and pavilions invite residents to take a little time to enjoy life. Late last year
dirt and playground equipment first arrived, beginning the transformation of
an open field into a haven for giggles and philosophizing. A volleyball court
and fitness course for adults have been added to the playground equipment
for toddlers and bigger kids. With four pavilions and grills the park is a wel-
coming place for families and friends. There is also room to expand, possibly
with basketball and tennis courts.

Turkey Shoot
The Moore Haven High Athletic Booster Club
conducted its annual turkey shoot fund-raiser last
Tuesday evening at the 10th Street Athletic Com-
plex in Moore Haven.
The Club would like to thank the following
businesses and individuals for sponsoring turkeys

Roy D. 'Danny' Rice, 78
CLEWISTON Roy D. "Danny" Rice, age 78,
of Clewiston, passed away Nov. 9, 2010, in Cle-
wiston.
He was born Nov. 17, 1931, in Garten, WVa.,
the son of the late Albertis and Vida (Lusk) Rice.
Mr. Rice married Nancy C. Campbell. He served
in the United States Army. He was a fireman
with the Montura Fire Department. He was a Su-
pervisor. He was a member of Turning Point
Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy C.(Camp-
bell) Rice; four sons, Michael (Carolyn) Rice,
David Rice, James Rice, and William Rice; and
two daughters, Joyce Gorecki, and Deborah
Munger; two brothers, John Rice, and Donald
Rice; one sister, Betty Rice; 13 grandchildren;
three, and one on the way, great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 3 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12,
2010, in Turning Point Church Of God, 207 Pine
Lane, Clewiston, with Rev. Dennis Edgar offi-
ciating. His body was cremated after the servic-
es. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., today, in
Akin-Davis Funeral Home, Clewiston.

Clewiston; seven grandchildren, Amber Good-
man, Katelin Goodman, Austin Adams, Alysia
Adams, Chase Goodman, Caylee Goodman, and
Taiyla Mozoul; and four great-grandchildren,
Kinley, Noah, Alona and Makylah.

Moore Haven Terriers Weekly Football Wrap-Up


Terriers Win Final Game of
the Season

Moore Haven Terriers
The Terriers hosted Sheridan Hills Christian
(Sharks) in their final game of the season. The
senior players made the most of their final game
and the Terriers came away with a 36-0 victory
over the Sharks. The win ends the 2010 season on
a positive note and earned the Terriers their first
winning season since 2003.
In the first three quarters of the game, the
score remained 0-0. The Terriers penalties and
mistakes could have proved costly if the Sharks
had been able to take advantage of the situation.
The Sharks were awarded with two automatic
first downs when the Terriers were twice called
for roughing the kicker on punt returns.
It was late in the third quarter, off a successful
run by T. Hallback, that the game began to take a
turn as the Terrier offense awoke from their slum
ber. The Terriers, on 3rd/l, went with Hallback,
and got their first touchdown and the two point
conversion to bring the score to 8-0.
The Terriers continued to make mistakes and
draw penalties in the fourth quarter but the de
fense would not allow the Sharks an opportunity
to capitalize on their mistakes. It was plays by D.
Cohens, H. Ward and B. Cohens that stopped the
Sharks next offensive possession and caused a
fumble that was recovered by the Terriers' J. Au
gustine.

The Terriers took over on Ist/10, on the Sharks'
31 yard line, and the they wasted no time in scor
ing their second touchdown by Vinton Lewis and
two point conversion by Markeis Hallback, to
bring the score to 16-0, with nine minutes remain
ing in the game.
The Terriers were called for their second
roughing the kicker penalty, and the Sharks got
the automatic first down. The Terrier defense con
tinued its domination of the Sharks offense, when
H. Ward intercepted the Sharks pass.
On the turnover the Terrier offense worked
its way once again toward the end zone with a
carry by Markeis Hallback, and on 3rd/goal, se
nior Cassius Hallback reached end zone for the
Terrier touchdown. The Terriers called a time-out
with 4:48 to go in the game, with the score 22-0.
The Terriers, Senior Bersain Herrera field goal at
tempt failed.
The Terrier defense took to the field and made
some of the biggest plays of the game. The Ter
rier players, Devonte Campbell, Marcus Hallback
and Jaime Juarez, proceeded to sack the Shark
quarterback on the first play. The biggest play
came on 2nd down, with the Sharks on the 33
yard line, and as their quarterback went to throw
the ball, Juarez stepped up to bat the ball down,
scoop it up and ran for a Terrier touchdown. The
field goal attempt by Herrera was good and the
Terriers increased their lead to 29-0 with 3:25 left
in the game.
The Terrier defense continued with big plays
right until the end of the game. The Sharks fum
bled the ball on the Terriers 47 yard line, and Ja
Vonte Hall recovered the ball for the Terriers. The

Terriers took over on Sharks 20 yard line, and
Markeis Hallback scored the Terriers final touch
down of the game, with 1:13 seconds left. The
field goal attempt by Herrera was good and the
game winning score was 36-0.
The game saw one of the Terriers' most excit
ing quarters of the entire year. The Terrier defense
did not allow their opponent to score and held
them to negative 76 yards total offense with their
only positive plays coming from Terrier penalties.

They came up with big plays almost every time
they took the field. The Terriers mistakes and pen
allies may not have cost them this game but it is a
gamble no team can afford to take.
The Terriers honored their seniors at half-time
and this reporter was able to interview many of
the senior players and their parents at the end of
the game.

tion: 1) Group E Pump Brighton install proposed pump within the
SFWMD's right-of-way along the Indian Prairie Canal to provide irrigation to
approximately 828.41 acres of improved pasture. Hollywood Reservation
(S36, T50S/R41E and S1,2/T51S/R41E): 1) Seminole Corporation Ex-
change Plaza-Retail/Garage/Warehouse Project construction of a re-
tail/warehouse building with parking, drainage system, water and sewage
facilites on less than acre. Storm water will be retained onsite. 2) Water
Main Extension to Stirling Road & US Highway 441 Construction of a ublity
extension within an old Florida Power and Light easement. The project is lo-
cated at the Turnpike Mile Marker 51.95 on the Hollywood Seminole Indian

The Department of Environmental Protection gives notice of its intent to is-
sue a Formal Determination of the Landward Extent of Wetlands and Other
Surface Waters of the State File No. FD-22-0292530-001) to A. Duda &
Sons, Inc. c/o Lew Carter of Polston Engineering Inc.; P.O. Box 588; Se-
bring, FL 33871, for a 126-acre tract located in Section 13, Township 42
South, Range 31 East and Section 18, Township 42 South, Range 32 East,
Glades County, located at the intersect of Bronson Road and Little H Street.
Head west out of the town of Moore Haven on N. US Highway 27 and travel
around 4.5 miles and then turn left or south onto Bronson Road. Then trav-
el about 1.5 miles to reach the intersection of Bronson Road and Little H
Street. The Department's file on this matter is available for public inspection

1)Admin position in Ag. Extension office va
cated when former employee was not medically
released for work following exhaustion of Family
Medical Leave Act.
2)Paramedic position in EMS vacated when
former employee was not medically released
for work following exhaustion of Family Medical
Leave Act.
3)Part time custodian at Library vacated when
employee, according to Taylor, resigned due to
severe health issues which required surgery and
she is an older lady.
Taylor said when an employee does not return
after the 12 weeks of FMLA, according to person
nel policy they have to be terminated. Commis
sioner Beck inquired if the employee leaving
the EMS position would be coming back. Taylor
stated she could apply and would be considered
like any other applicant, provided she meets the
health requirements, and stated that with Para
medics and EMTs there is no light duty. Taylor
stated the position would be open for a couple of
weeks then go through the selection process for
hiring. Taylor stated the Ag Extension had needed
some help and he had arranged for that, and later
acknowledged that the EMS position had continue
ally been filled by part-time employees.
Commissioner Storter suggested that when
employment positions are vacated, the depart
ment heads and county manager know which
ones are critical and should be able to determine
the need to refill the positions to avoid delays in
service. She cited the need for immediate assis
tance in the County Ag Agents office, which of
ficially became vacant October 11, and had the
County Manager been authorized, the advertising
for the position could have commenced and the
position already filled. She said any new positions
to be created would be subject to the hiring freeze
and would require Board approval. Beck remind
ed the board that the county is under a hiring
freeze and Storter stated i .... .1 of the Oct. 12
meeting could and should have been amended to
include approval to fill that position.

Commissioners Items And Comments
Commissioner Storter reminded of the board
of the invitation out to Muse for their Appreciation
Luncheon for the completion of their new park.
Commissioner Giesler said he got a phone call
from Chris Doolin last week; since the elections,
the Small County Coalition has lost their chair
man and lost a couple more vital people.
Giesler said he's a past chairman and the only
one left so he was asked to fill the position of Ex
ecutive Vice Chairman for the next two years, and
he asked for Board's permission to accept it. The
Board gave consensus. Echols stated it was not
something we should vote on but was under the
auspices of the chairman to do that.
Commissioner Echols: We went through
this entire courthouse; our plan is to continue
with maybe one or two items left to restore. We
went through each one of these offices, trying to
return this building back to the status it needs to
be.
It is imperative that this board have a place to
negotiate from, a place to have business entities
come into that we're viewed as professionals and
as equals. If we're viewed upon as less than that,
it's hard to negotiate with people if they think they
can deal you a nickel out, that you'll greedily ac
cept it and be patted on the head for it, and go on.


And we cannot do business as Glades County in
that manner. We have to do business as equals,
we have to be looked at as equals, we have to act
as equals, and that applies to the board and our
constitutional officers; so the steps that we take
to maintain and gain that professionalism are
steps in the right direction and I certainly applaud
the efforts that we've taken in that room to look
professional, to have a private area, that you can
hold discussions at and they'd be just that private
because there are times when you have to have
meetings with outside companies and they want
an area of privacy.
If they're going to come in and discuss busi
ness plans in this county with this county, you
have to have an area of privacy room because
they don't want their business plans exposed to
anybody and everybody that comes along. This
board is a public board and does business in the
public; private corporations, they have planning
(sic), and they're confidential, and when they
bring their plans to this county and want to dis
cuss what the options are, they should have an
area of privacy to be able to do that. There are
times when you need to have a place for a man
ager, our county manager and our constitutional
officers may need to have a private place where
they can counsel employees, and things of that
nature also. I certainly applaud it. I think it looks
wonderful. You {to Taylor} did a fine job. Not
only that, but look at the rest of the offices in the
courthouse, and they look great too. And I think
it's been a good partnership and I applaud your
efforts there.
Commissioner Jones: I would also concur
with everything Russell said and would like to
mention one thing, that Mr. Taylor has had more
on his plate in the 18 years that I've been here
that any previous county administrator has, and
he's in the process of making us shine in the pub
lic's eye and I think that is to be commended and
should be encouraged. And the second thing is,
Mr. Pringle, I'd like to thank you for keeping me
up to date with your correspondence on every
thing that's happening in Washington Park.
Commissioner Beck: I would concur with
Mr. Echols' remarks on the courthouse. We've
upgraded all the electric, shoot everything in
here, and it's something we can be proud of,
particularly the air conditioning. The conference
room down there, the way that it was, I wasn't
too proud to hold a conference in there but right
now, I'd invite the governor or anybody else in
there to sit down and feel like my office is essen
tially equal to his.
The money that has been spent on the fur
nishings in there I think will certainly hold their
value, particularly since they were bought in a
depressed time...(tape continues) ...that's gone
into the courthouse renovations and I'm sure
that this is not the end of it now, but then also,
one thing I think we all need to bear in mind that
this was done with grant money; it's, none of
Glades County's money has gone into this and if
we don't take it, it goes back into the pool and
then goes in somebody else's conference room.
I think it's time we step up to the plate, if we get
the quarter-million dollar grant, we need to spend
a quarter million dollars, and Mr. Taylor has taken
this attitude and with the speed that our overall
projects have gone around the courthouse I am
very pleased with all of it, the lawn, the fountain,
inside, outside, you just look at it and it all says,
"We're Glades County and we're here. Let's do
business."
