Pieter Westergaard, the first and last phar-
macist of Glades County, packed his medi-
cine bags a year after the infamous 1926
hurricane and retreated to higher ground in
Tampa, Fla. Decades later, in the mid-1990s,
the Glades County Historical Society (GCHS)
obtained the home Westergaard abandoned
in the aftermath of the storm. They've been
working on restoring it ever since, fueled
by a combination of state grants, individual
donations, membership fees and personal
funds.
President Anne Coffey and Treasurer Ju-
lie Wigton of the GCHS guided me through
the Westergaard house on 270 Avenue L
in Moore Haven. They eagerly pointed out
the hand-blown glass that still fills some of
the window frames and a light fixture from
the late 1800s. One room displays fossils ex-
cavated from the Caloosahatchee River in
the 1950s. In the living room, vintage light
fixtures-reproductions of the 1920s era-
dangle from the ceiling, the only furnishings


purchased with the last of the grant money.
The rest of the furniture is an eclectic mix of
antique finds and community donations.
Ultimately the society wants to fill the
Westergaard House with authentic pieces
from the era prior to the 1926 hurricane.
GCHS members reluctantly included mod-
ern appliances in the kitchen, but did so
at the urging of Property Appraiser Larry
Lucky.
He encouraged the GCHS to install the
modern appliances so the house could be
open to the public three years ago. 'And
we're glad we did" said Ms. Wigton.
The GCHS eventually plans to replace
the replica wooden floors with real wood,
restore the kitchen with cast-iron appliances
and incorporate a gift shop into the house.
Non-profit groups gather at the West-
egaard house free of charge; individuals
can rent the building for only $25. Last Hal-
loween, members of the GCHS distributed
candy and cookies from the '20s era to eager

Needing to feed children,
some starve horses

At the point that 10 horses were recov-
ered from a site at the Big Cypress Reserva-


tion last week, their bodies had assumed the
appearance of starvation's fatigue.
A veterinarian from Lake Placid, Dr. John
Yelvington, was called down to check on the
stable and treat the horses.
In this state of "negative nitrogen bal-
ance," the veterinarian explained, the hors-
es weren't eating enough to sustain life and
their bodies began digesting muscle mass.


These were the lucky ones.
Among the horses that were still alive, of-
ficials with the Seminole Police Department
found the bodies of five more sprawled out
in different areas of the property -- some
had died long ago and had been dragged
to where the stench could not be smelled,
others had died more recently and could be
found close by.


And when he talks about it, Dr. Yelvington
attributes what he believes is becoming a
more common occurrence to the economy.
It's not right. He certainly isn't saying so, but
it's likely why the horses have died, he says.

Glades at a Glance


Tobacco Free Partnership
On Sept. 16, the Glades County Tobacco
Free Partnership will be meeting at 3 p.m.
in the Moore Haven High School Library. At
this meeting an update will be given on the
status of the tobacco free parks ordinance
for the City of Moore Haven. Detailed plans
will be discussed for three upcoming policy
areas that the partnership will be working
on; preventing the use of candy-flavored
tobacco in Glades County, a model 100
percent tobacco free school policy for all
Glades County schools, and a plan to help
owners of multi-unit housing complexes to
go smoke free. The goal of this meeting is to
form sub-committees in order to re-organize
the partnership into an action-oriented
group. Everyone is welcome to attend this
meeting as we are trying to grow our part-
nership and gather new ideas and support
for these issues.

4-H Club News
New 4-H Sewing Club
A new sewing club will begin on Sept. 8.
It will meet at the Doyle Conner Building on
Wednesday after school. (If school is closed
for the day, there will be no meeting.) Each
class will be over by 5 p.m. This is open to
students from ages 8 to 18. The projects will
be completed by Feb. 18. If you are showing
an animal this will not interfere with Chalo
Nitka Week, as projects will be completed
and ready to be judged.
Come and join the fun, whether you are a
beginner or advanced in your sewing skills.
Detailed (step by step) instructions will be
given to all beginners. Come each Wednes-
day that your schedule permits from Sept. 8
through Feb. 16.

The Little Rascals 4-H Club will hold their
first meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, at 6
p.m. at the Doyle Conner Building. This club
is specially designed for members between
the ages of 5 p.m. 7 p.m. by Sept. 1.

Monday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. will be our
first 4-H meeting. They will be meeting at the
Doyle Conner building. They are asking that
at least one parent/guardian come with the
4-H'ers to this meeting. They will be going
over all 4-H and GCYLS rules that pertain to
our club. It would make for a great start to
our year if everyone were there when they
go over these so they are all on the same
page and we can address any problems or
questions at this time. Also very important
they will be electing officers for this year.
This year we are really going to focus on
our teens and their leadership in our club.
They believe their leadership and guidance
will be a great asset to the younger 4-H'ers
as well as a great learning and growth ex-
perience for them. They do have some new
and exciting ideas for this year so I hope you
will come to this meeting ready to Make the
Best Better !

SADD/SWAT Pre Football
Carnival
On Sept.10 the Moore Haven Junior/
Senior High SADD/SWAT Club (Students
Working Against Destructive Decisions and
Students Working Against Tobacco) will put
on a free pre football game carnival at Moore
Haven High School. The event will run from
5:30 to 7 p.m. and will have games, carnival
snacks, and information about the SADD/
SWAT Group. Please come out before the
game and enjoy the fun!

*Lakeport Community Association will
be holding its monthly meetings on the first
Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. The next
meeting is Oct. 5. All Lakeport residences
are encouraged to help support our com-

Wet Season Lags Behind


August provides above
average rainfall yet deficit
persists

Despite greater than average rainfall District-
wide in August, rainfall amounts for the wet sea-
son continue to run at a slight deficit. From June
1 through August 31, 20.53 inches of rainfall were
recorded District-wide. The historical average for
that time is 22.5 inches of rainfall.
During the current wet season, heavy down-
pours of 3 inches or more have been of a local-
ized nature, with overall District wide soakings
occurring less frequently than average.
"Rainfall amounts during the wet season have
created good conditions throughout the regional
system, meaning there is water storage capac-


ity in case a storm system moves through," said
Tommy Strowd, SFWMD Deputy Executive Direc-
tor of Operations and Maintenance. "The regional
flood control system has responded well to the
few larger rainfall events we have seen."
From the beginning of the rainy season in June
through August 31, an average of 20.53 inches of
rain fell across the 16-county District. The total
represents about 92 percent of the normal rain-
fall for the three months, or a deficit of around
2 inches.
While June typically produces some of the
wettest weeks of the year in South Florida, the
six-week period between July 5 and August 15
often provides a lull in the annual rainy season.
The District wide average of 8.72 inches of rain
in August was 116 percent of normal, or a rainfall
surplus of 1.18 inches.
Once again showcasing Florida's weather ex-
tremes, the rainy season rainfall deficit follows a
2009-2010 dry season that recorded 131 percent


of average dry season rainfall. This represents
5.88 inches above normal with an average of
24.67 inches of rain falling throughout the District
from the beginning of November through the end
of May.
The higher than average rainfall total pre-
sented challenges for wildlife, particularly wading
birds that nest in the Everglades. Media outlets are
encouraged to post this graphic and link on their
websites as a public service for residents.
Even with above average rainfall, the District
was able to perform vital maintenance work to
the regional flood control system that normally
occurs during the dry season. By the start of the
2010 rainy season, $240 million had been invest-
ed in essential maintenance and upgrade work
during the past five years to ensure the system of
2,600 miles of canals and levees operates at opti-
mal capacity and provides effective flood control
for South Florida's 7.5 million residents.
The rainy season lasts from June through Oc-


tober, when South Florida receives about 70 per
cent of its annual average of 52 inches of rainfall.
Flooding may happen when large amounts of
rain occur during a short period of time or from a
single heavy storm, tropical system or hurricane.
Forecasters are calling for above normal tropical
activity during the current storm season.
This year, the District also enhanced its an-
nual rainy season preparations by launching a
new webpage with information on the shared
responsibilities of flood control in South Florida
and what residents, businesses and local govern-
ments can do to prepare for a storm.
Complementing the online effort, SF-
WMD staff hosted a series of rainy season
readiness presentations across the region
- at county commission meetings, schools
and civic association gatherings in an ef-
fort to continually inform the public about
current conditions and citizens' role in local
flood control.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

September is Prostate Cancer
Awareness Month. The goal of Prostate
Cancer Awareness Month is to educate
men and their families about prostate
cancer, the risk factors and how impor
tant early detection and treatment is.
Prostate cancer is the most com-
monly diagnosed form of cancer


among men in the United States, other
than some kinds of skin cancer. It is
the second leading cause of cancer
deaths and the seventh leading cause
of death overall for men in this country.
The American Cancer Society (ACS)
estimates that 14,610 men will be di-
agnosed with prostate cancer by the
end of 2010 and approximately 2,590
of them will die from the disease. Be-
cause prostate cancer can be cured


if caught early, men who have any of
these risk factors should talk with their
healthcare provider about screening.
The Hendry and Glades County Health
Departments encourages all men to
be aware of the risk factors associated
with developing prostate cancer and to
take an active role in their health. Fac-
tors that may increase the risk of devel-
oping prostate cancer include: Age -As
a man ages, his risk of prostate cancer


increases. (The average age of patients
at the time of diagnosis is 65) Family
history of prostate cancer A man's
risk is higher if family members have
had prostate cancer, (father, brother
or son) Race African-American men
have nearly 60 percent greater risk of
developing prostate cancer than white
men and are far more likely to die from
it. Diet and dietary factors Some stud-
ies suggest that men who eat a diet


high in saturated fat and red meat or
men that are obese may have a higher
risk for prostate cancer. September
24, 2010 is being recognized as "Wear
Blue Day", in honor of Prostate Cancer

Artie B. 'Granny' Scroggin, 88
OKEECHOBEE Artie B. "Granny" Scroggin,
age 88, died Sept. 6, 2010, at her residence. She
was a resident of ('.. . i i. .1 - for 22 years.
Granny lived for her family, children, and all of
her grandchildren.
For 30 years she worked in food service in the
Pahokee School System.
She is survived by sons, Bob (Lynda) Scroggin
of Leslie, Ark., Bill (Cathy) Scroggin, of Marshall,
Ark., Ed (Lynn) Scroggin, of Jacksonville, Fla.;
daughters, Chris Roberts and Annette Usher,
both of Okeechobee; eight grandchildren and
10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband,
Earl and grandson, Billy Scroggin.
A graveside service will be held Sept. 9, at 1
p.m., at Port Mayaca Memorial Gardens and
Park, Port Mayaca.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memori-
al donations be made to Hospice of Okeecho-

CLEWISTON Lester Lee Bond, husband of
the late Becky Hayes Bond, age 75, of Clewis-
ton, passed away Sept. 4, 2010, in Clewiston.
He was born Feb. 19, 1935, in Leslie, WVa.,
son of the late Lester Walter Bond and the late
Elva Gladys (Hizer) Bond. He retired as a man-
ager from General Motors. He loved gardening.
Survivors include his stepchildren, Steve Hayes
and wife Ladawn of Clewiston, Stan Hayes and
wife Laura of Loxahatchee, Donna Moore and
husband Frank of Clewiston and Deborah Witt
and husband John of Clewiston; grandchildren,
Steven and wife Gabby, Kelli, Alise, Chelsa, Co-
rie, Miranda, Travis, Davis, Hannah, Ramsey,
Haylee and Macy; great-grandchildren, Victoria
and Liliana; brother, Gene Bond (Laura) of
Pembroke Pines; and sister, Julia A. Clark
(John) of Moore Haven.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rebec-
ca Hayes Bond; and previous wife, Connie
Bond; son, Timothy Lee Bond; and daughter,
Kathy Bond.

Thomas Anderson Smith, 60
CLEWISTON Thomas Anderson Smith, age
60, of Clewiston, passed away Aug. 31, 2010, in
Clewiston, Fla.
He was born March 15, 1950, in Portsmouth,
Va., the son of the late Carlton and Mary (Han-
cock) Smith. Mr. Smith married Donna Way. He
served his country in the United States Navy. He
was a Mechanic.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Smith;
mother, Mary Smith; two sons, Christopher An-
derson Smith of LaBelle, Thomas (Christina)
Anderson Smith, II of Clewiston; and one
daughter, Lisa (T.J.) Holt of Fort Myers; one
brother, Timothy (Teri) Smith of Moore Haven;
and two sisters, Vivian (Harry) Patterson of
North Carolina, Mary (Steve) Ham of LaBelle;
one sister-in-law, Marie (Bill) Koelsch of Homo-
sassa; and six grandchildren. Thomas was pre-
ceded in death by his father, and one grandson,
Christian Arceneaux.
Memorial services were held Sunday, Sept. 5,
2010, at 4 p.m. in Clewiston Church Of God, 522
San Luiz Avenue, Clewiston.

Parable of an Apple Pie

Here's a little something for your
supper," the lady said. "Thank you
very much," said Jim. On arrival home,
he opened the package and told his
brother, "Isn't that marvelous, a deli-
cious apple pie!"
"What's so wonderful about that?"
said Dick. "You can get ..... 1._. .-,, ii .,.
that at the bakery for a couple of dol-
lars." "I know, but this was for nothing,
and it was baked especially for me. It
makes me happy all over. It's wonder
ful to me." "Well, I can't see anything
so wonderful about a little pie." "That's
it," said Jim, "you just don't get it."
One of the tragedies of life is that
many folks just don't get it.
It was a busy morning, about 8:30
a.m., when an elderly gentleman in his
80s arrived at the clinic to have stitches
removed from his thumb. He said he
was in a hurry as he had an appoint-
ment at 9 a.m.
While taking care of his wound, the
attendant asked him if he had another
doctor's appointment, as he was in
such a hurry. The ._., i,11 ...... said no,
that he needed to go to the nursing
home to eat breakfast with his wife.
The attendant inquired as to her
health was told that his wife had been
there for a while and that she was a vic-
tim of Alzheimer's Disease.
When asked if she would be upset
if he was a bit late, the man replied
that she no longer knew who he was,
that she had not recognized him in five
years now.
Surprised, the attendant asked him,
"And you still go every morning, even
though she doesn't know who you
are?" The man smiled, and replied,
"She doesn't know me, but I still know
who she is."
True love is neither physical, nor ro-
mantic. True love is an acceptance of
all that is, has been, will be, and will
not be.

Why could he not stay longer or come
more often? It seemed to her that one
hour a week, and so poorly spent at
that, was hardly an indication of love
on his part.
The trouble was the young man
was still carrying a torch for an old
sweeheart. Though they had agreed to
make a break, he was still spending
several hours a week in her presence.
It seemed that they had so much
in common -- they loved the same
things and the same people and times

And yet, he would admit to no rift
between himself and the woman he

over.
The schedule is left from the days
when children helped with the crops
and were needed on the farms during
the hot months; schedules being ad-
justed to people's needs.
As I got older, summers became
times to find jobs; working in a grocery
store, working in piano store, working
in a lumber yard, working in a radio
company, working on an inter island
boat in the Bahamas.
Then it was time to go back to
school or college and begin another
year. The seasons each bring a tem-
po of living and seemed to repeat but
there were differences too. I spent
three long, damp, cold winters in Chi-
cago and then we'd welcome summer.
Summer, however, meant the possibil-
ity of tornadoes off of Lake Michigan;
joys but different menaces.
The routine of it all gave a sense of
order; but it wasn't always dull or just
repetition. Each experience brought
something to carry into life at a later
time.
Pianos were intricate, delicate in-


struments but they were also eighty
eight of a wooden mechanical action
and a simple system of levers and links.
Radios were also complex pieces of
gear; but they were made in stages
with each stage accomplishing some-
thing in sequence to get from speech
to signal or signal back to speech.
Inadvertently, I learned something
about careful disassembling and reas-
sembling things, about tackling big
problems by stages, about looking at
another part of the world and another
way of life and culture.
Each time I returned to the routines
of the seasons of the year, I had some-
thing new to bring with me; it was not
starting over but resuming at a new
level with new gifts to bring.
Amidst all of the same-ness, came
something new. The author of Eccle-
siastes talks about a "time for every
thing" (Chapter 3) and that God "has
made everything beautiful in its time
(verse 11)."
He writes of the repetitiveness and
seeming futility of it all; but adds "So
I saw that there is nothing better for a
man than to enjoy his work, for that is
his lot (verse 22)."
In the midst of all of the dull rou-
tine, there is still something to learn, to
master, to share, to make a little bet
ter. It is from this "lot" that each of
us contributes to making the world a
bit better, making life for others a bit
easier, making us a little closer to the
Kingdom of Heaven.
Labor Day has come and gone for
2010; and for most of us it is a holiday
to do anything but labor! Maybe it's
worth taking a second to reflect on it
after all.
What's special about it? It's our
wayof rn ,il ..ii- ,ii ,i Ietterplace,
no matter what we do. Maybe it's our
part in bringing in that Kingdom God
wants for us one day.

Glades Day's Early Season Upset

What was predicted to be
one of the most exciting grudge
matches of the season, turned
out to be one of the biggest
upsets. After building up an un-
spoken rivalry last season, the
Jupiter Christian Eagles were
hungry to make up for their
loss to the Gators that ended
their post season championship
hopes; and that they did.
The Gators won the toss only
to be shut down in the first three
plays. The punt gave Jupiter
Christian the ball at a relatively
good spot for a drive that was
dominated by the ground game
of quarterback Keddy Bostic;
leading to a touchdown pass on
their first drive to put the Eagles
above the Gators by 7.
The following Gator posses-
sion followed suit and resulted
in another quick three-and-out
after a dropped deep ball on
third down. The punt put the
Eagles back in their own territo-
ry; but poor tackling allowed for
three first downs led by Keddy
Bostic and running back Trey
Pendergrass, and ultimately an-
other touchdown on the board
for the Eagles at the beginning
of the second quarter, upping
their lead to 14-0.
Despite a pass interference
call on the first play of the Ga-
tors' next drive, the drive resulted
in another quick three-and-out.
Jupiter Christian's next posses-
sion was where GDS started
showing some motivation. After

plays, the Gators began to slow

down the efforts of Bostic and

Although the Gators managed
to stop the offensive attack of
the Eagles, the following punt

7 yard line. The Gators managed
to fight their way down the
field gaining a few consecutive
first downs, including a 30-yard
pass by GDS quarterback Tay
lor Reddish (4-for-11, 46 yards,
37 long); just before the Glades
Day "play of the game" 45-yard
touchdown rush by sophomore
running back Kelvin Taylor (137
yards, 17 attempts, 2 touch-
downs, 3 first downs).
With two minutes to go be-
fore the half, the Eagles came
on to the field and answered
with a 3rd down, 48 yard rush
by quarterback Keddy Bostic.
The following kickoff re-
sulted in a fumble and gave the
Eagles possession once again
with only 53 seconds left in the
half. After just three plays, the


Eagles had returned to the end-
zone to raise the score to 28-7
just before the half.
Jupiter Christian had first
possession coming in to the
third quarter and took advantage
by leading an eight play drive to
put them up 31-7. It wasn't until
the following drive that things
seemed to start turning around
for the Gators. A drive led by
great rushing and a solid perfor-
mance by the offensive line led
to Kelvin Taylor's second score
of the night, shortening the gap
to 31-14, and finally giving the
Gators some momentum.
The Gators returned the
favors of the first quarter by
holding the Eagles to a quick
three-and-out; giving the team
the ball with 2:57 left in the third
quarter. In spite of two consecu-
tive first downs, their drive was
ended on a failed fourth down
attempt; a dropped pass in the
end zone.
The Eagles next possession
followed suit, and the three-and-
out led to a punt. The Gators next

as the 2nd play of the Eagles fol-
lowing drive which resulted in a

Despite a few efforts by
GDS, the 38-14 deficit was just
too much to overtake with the
amount of time remaining in
the game; leaving the final score

"Well, I'd rather lose now
and catch them in the playoffs,"
stated a Glades Day assistant
coach; which if the Gators plan
on following in the footsteps
of their last season, might very
well happen. The Gators lost an
early season match up last year
against the Eagles, 28-21, which
fueled the intense post-season
game that resulted in a thrilling
45-44 win for Glades Day.
But if the Gators are look
ing to follow in the footsteps of
their last season, they're focus is
going to need to be directed to-
wards getting through their next

NEW SEASON BRINGS NEW RULES


Major changes to hunting
guidelines made for new
archery season

Even though you can hardly tell, sum-
mer is officially over. Kids have returned to
school, and hunting season's already been
going on for a month now in South Florida.
Finally, the time of year we've been waiting
for is upon us the beginning of archery
season.
Besides hunting the rut, archery season
provides a great opportunity to take a tro-
phy whitetail and arguably is one of the best
times to do so.
If you're stealthy enough and have done
your homework, you've got a good chance
of having a nice one come within shooting
range of your bowhunting setup.
Before you take to the woods though,
there have been some major changes to
hunting in Florida this year that you need
to know, including hunting zone modifica-
tions, the addition of a new, fourth zone and
different hunting season dates.

Hunting season still comes in first in the
South Hunting Zone, which, by the way, has
been renamed Zone A and remains that part
of the state south of State Road 70. Archery
season there started back on July 31, and it
actually just ended Aug. 29.
The state has a new hunting zone, made
up in part by the Green Swamp Basin. This
fourth zone, which previously was the
southwest portion of the old Central Hunt-
ing Zone, is called Zone B and lies south of
S.R. 50, west of U.S. 441 and the Kissimmee
Waterway, north of S.R. 60 and east of the
Gulf of Mexico.
Zone B was created because the deer
in that area have a much later breeding pe-
riod.
Archery season in this new zone will al-
ways begin on the third Saturday of October
each year. This year, that falls on Oct. 16,
and the season will run through Nov. 14.
The boundary line separating what used
to be called the Northwest Hunting Zone
(now Zone D) from the Central Zone (now
Zone C) has been moved a little farther
west.

*The new line begins at U.S. 27 at the
Gadsden County-Georgia state line and runs
south on U.S. 27 until it meets S.R. 61 in
Tallahassee. From there, it follows S.R. 61,
running south until it hits U.S. 319. The line
follows U.S. 319, continuing south to U.S.


98; it then runs east along U.S. 98 before
turning south on Spring Creek Highway and
continuing to the Gulf of Mexico.
If you hunt west of that line, you're in
Zone D, and changes to season dates there
push opening day of archery back one
week, so the season is Oct. 23 through Nov.
24 this year.
In Zone C, however, the archery season
begins one week earlier than usual, and
from now on will open on the third Satur-
day in September. This year, those dates are
Sept. 18 to Oct. 17.
Beginning this year, besides the usual
hunting license and archery permit that you
need to hunt during archery season, you will
also need a $5 deer permit to hunt deer in
Florida.
During archery season, you can take
deer of either sex, regardless of antler size
(except for spotted fawns). The daily bag
limit on deer is two.
Bag limits for deer on wildlife manage-
ment areas (WMAs) can differ, so check the
area brochure before you hunt, and don't
forget that you need the $26 management
area permit to hunt on WMAs.
You can hunt wild hogs on private lands
year-round with no bag or size limits. On
most WMAs, there's also no bag or size lim-
its, and hogs are legal to take during most
hunting seasons except spring turkey. On a
few WMAs, bag and size limits do apply so,
again, check the brochure.

In addition to hunting big game, it's also
legal to shoot gobblers and bearded turkeys
during archery season, given you have a
turkey permit, which, by the way, increased
this year to $10 for residents and $125 for
nonresidents.
You may take only one turkey per day,
and there's a two-bird fall-season limit. But,
it's against the law to hunt turkeys in Hol-
mes County in the fall.
Only bows may be used during archery
season no crossbows are allowed. Only
hunters with a disabled crossbow permit
are allowed to use crossbows during ar-
chery season.
Bows must have a minimum draw
weight of 35 pounds, and hand-held releas-
es are permitted. For hunting deer, hogs and
turkeys, broadheads must have at least two
sharpened edges with a minimum width of
7/8 inch.
As far as legal shooting hours go, you're
allowed to let your arrow fly between a half-
hour before sunrise and a half-hour after
sunset.
Except for turkeys, you're permitted to
take resident game over feed such as corn
or soybeans on private property. It's against
the law to use bait on WMAs.

Bridge maintenance project --- Contrac-
tor crews will be working on bridge joint
and deck repairs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on

Motorists should expect northbound and
southbound intermittent right and left lane
closures, slow moving traffic and possible
delays. Flagger's will be on site to assist with
traffic. Motorists are asked to use caution

service" said Ms. Wigton. The Society eager-
ly prepared for their Christmas open house,
but was disappointed at the small turnout.
The GCHS also laments the condition of
the few remaining historic buildings in the
downtown area.
And though the Society has focused on
the Westegaard house, it is also concerned
with the other historic homes-40, at last
count-some of which are in sad disrepair.
Frustrated at the limited support or coopera-
tion received from city officials, GCHS news-
letters claim that, in the past, the city did not
enforce regulations of citing historic home
owners for neglect.

explained that the city has had difficulty

Yelvington says. "The economy is bad. Peo-
ple are having trouble feeding their families,
much less horses."
At least in this latest case, it seems the
veterinarian may be right. Two people were
charged with felony counts of animal cruelty
in connection with the death of the horses
on Wind Clan Road. When interviewed by
police officials, one of the suspects was hon-
est about it: he didn't have money to feed
the horses.
Dr. Yelvington receives calls from around
the area, reports of horses being left on the
sides of roads "like stray dogs."
And then what is the normal Good Sa-
maritan who comes across the stray horses
to do? Feeding them being the natural incli-


keeping a steady code enforcement officer.
As for citing a home for neglect, whether
it be historic or otherwise, is a "slow-turn-
ing process." He points out that one of the
downtown buildings owned by a member
of the GCHS is not in great condition, either.
"It's only a matter of time before these build-
ings fall down" he said. One of the buildings
was torn down after part of it crumbled it
into the street. As much as the GCHS is full
of idealistic vision, the city looks at the situ-
ation of the historic district and homes from
a practical viewpoint. "We don't have the
money to restore anything. We don't."
Tracy Whirls, Executive Director of the
Economic Development Council, gave fur-
ther insight into the situation. After the build-
ing of the new bridge, downtown businesses
either relocated along Highway 27 or went
out of business altogether. "The majority of
those business owners were largely out-of-
town absentee land lords that didn't invest

A person goes to the feed store and buys
a bag of feed, and then hopes that the horse
will recover.
"That creates a real big insulin surge in
a horse's body," the veterinarian explains.
"The heart needs potassium to beat and
after this high carbohydrate meal, the heart
stops and they die. We're killing them with
kindness."
As for the remaining horses recovered,
Dr. Yelvington informs that lab work will
determine their actual condition. He hopes
that their organs are strong and they'll hold
up.
"Right now they're in a good grass
pasture," he said. "We'll keep our fingers
crossed and see how things go."

Street, a national movement with a historic
focus, eventually plans to replicate what was
in the downtown area.
On a morning walk through downtown
Moore Haven, this writer stops and peers
through the locked glass door of a dilapi-
dated building.
A worn wooden floor, buckling with
age, supports junk clustered throughout the
space. I gaze up, appreciating the craftsman-
ship on the ceiling's intricate molding, but
even the ceiling sags beneath decades of
neglect.
If the building is torn down, maybe a
piece can be salvaged and displayed in the
Westegaard House.
