Charged in Drug Trafficking Scheme

Southern District of Florida

On June 30, Wifredo R. Ferrer, United
States Attorney for the Southern District
of Florida; John V Gillies, Special Agent
in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation
(FBI), Miami Field Office; and Ric L. Brad-
shaw, Sheriff, Palm Beach County Sheriff's
Office, announced that a federal grand jury
in West Palm Beach, Florida, has returned
an indictment against three former correc-
tions officers.
The three individuals formerly worked
as Corrections Officers for The Geo Group
at Moore Haven Correctional Facility in
Moore Haven, Glades County, under a con-
tract with the state of Florida.

Community Development Block Grant
(CDBG) FY 2009 (Erica)
This was the first of two required public


hearings to advise citizens of the possibility
that Glades County may apply for competi-
tive grant funds up to $700,000 to be used
in unincorporated parts of Glades County
in three categories including community
revitalization, housing rehabilitation, and
neighborhood revitalization.
The funds must be used for one of the
following purposes: 1) to benefit low and
moderate income persons; 2) to aid in the
prevention or elimination of slums or blight;
3) to meet other community development
needs of recent origin having a particular
urgency because existing conditions pose a
serious and immediate threat to the health
or welfare of the community where other fi-
nancial resources are not available to meet
such needs.

board about the delays and progress of the
project to build a pavilion in Washington
Park, noting the request for the project was
in 2008.
Mr. Taylor stated that County Attorney
Richard Pringle had submitted a memo
stating he is waiting for the surveyor's re-
vised boundary survey with revised legal
descriptions, and has already dictated the
proposed lease amendment that will re-
lease the property (where the pavilion will
be sited) from the lease between property
owner Glades District School Board and
RCMA.
The memo stated he expects to get ap-
proval of the amended lease at the July 22

The Glades County Historical Society
announces that the restored 1920's Peter
Westergaard House on Avenue L in Moore
Haven is available for meetings.
Nonprofit organizations can reserve
the home for free. Private occasions like
baby showers, birthdays and bridal show-
ers require a $25 clean up fee. To reserve

VFW Post #9528
The VFW Post #9528 is located at 2002
S.R. 78 W. in Buckhead Ridge. Post opens
at noon, Monday through Sunday.
We are taking applications for new
members for the VFW, Ladies Auxiliary,
Male Auxiliary, AMVETS and AMVETS la-
dies auxiliary.
*Wednesday: Ladies Auxiliary dinner
and Men's Auxiliary or AmVets. Music will
be available.
Every Thursday is bar bingo at 12:45
p.m. Lunch is available.
SEvery Friday a steak dinner with
baked potato, salad and rolls will be

Center for Independent Living will be

Moore Haven, Clewiston, and LaBelle
sites between the hours of noon until 2:30
p.m.

days that they will be available in those

Airboat Open House
Florida Airboat Association's Airboaters
Appreciation open house set for July 16
18, in Okeechobee
On July 16 starting around 6 p.m. there
will a Manufacturers Summit and cracker
style gathering at Pier II Resort. On Satur-
day July 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the
FAA will hold their awards ceremony at
Harney Pond Canal in Glades County.
After the ceremony there will be free
time to ride Lake Okeechobee and enjoy
the weekend. Sunday morning at 10 a.m.,
FAA will host a President's breakfast meet-
ing for Airboater Unity and Fellowship for
all involved in the airboating business.

Eye and ear protection is mandatory and

The gate will open at 8:00 a.m., reg-

Guests may be accompanied to the fir-
ing line and supervised by a club member
for safety concerns.

Stuff! Ownership and our
illusions about it.

The TV show "Operation Repo" recounts
the trials and tribulations of those who re-
possess vehicles when payments are in ar-
rears. Logically, you'd expect that people
who do not pay for their cars would real-
ize they broke their purchase contract and
would relinquish the car. That's never the
case! The confrontations are always "It's my
car!" or "There must be some mistake!" and
the battles are underway.
They range from physical confrontations,
certainly a verbal confrontation, threats,
and assaults involving all kinds of people
that have nothing to do with the transaction
between the buyer or seller and a host of
complications. The program has a wide au-
dience appeal because we understand our
emotional attachments to the "things" in our
lives that we think we possess.
People live with the illusions that they
"possess" things and other people. I've
heard parents talk about "my children..."
and then go on to tell about how they were
directing a life that had a sense of direction
all of its own.
One former seminary dean talked about
his family and said "I like to think I'm captain
of my ship, but all I've done is to create little
ships, each with their own captains." When
it comes to "stuff" it is more than likely that
we don't possess it, it possesses us!
The illusion of ownership comes out
when something we think we own is taken
away; a house, a car, a loved one, material
possessions, treasures of all kinds, you name
it. People get upset, understandably so, but
I wonder if the things that upset them were
really theirs in the first place.
God sends children into our lives, gives
us things to use, and provides for us and
for many of us, well beyond our needs. One
theologian (Martin Buber) said "People love
things and use people when they should be
loving people and using things."
We have a hard time of letting go and our
possessiveness comes with a cost. Job put
it this way: "We came in with nothing, we
leave with nothing; the Lord gave and the
Lord has taken away (Job 1:21)."
What happens in the meantime is a gift,
an investment in our lives, an opportunity
to do something with what is shared with
us. It is from that perspective that happiness
comes; you can't take from me what I don't
have.
When I think I have, I am vulnerable to
all sorts of hurts and disappointments; when
I keep things in perspective, I do not let my-
self be deceived. What then do we really
have? Probably less than we think.
Our greatest "possessions" would be
things that can't be taken away; gifts of
the spirit, the person God has made us, the
persons sent into our lives to enrich us and
be with us for a short while, the faith-hope-
love of which we are capable and those acts
where we are capable of enriching others or
our world. The rest? It's all on loan, that's
all.


Parental Responsibility

Children! What a tremendous blessing!
Children give parents no end of joy. But
along with the joy comes sobering respon-
sibilities. As parents we owe certain obli-
gations to our children. We can't let them
down. We can't let God down. God expects
each and every parent to do his or her part
in raising children.
The very first responsibility we have as
parents is to teach our children of God. Ev-
ery other responsibility fall before this one.
When one parent is a Christian and the oth-
er is not, the task becomes greater. But this
is no excuse for not teaching children. We
have a good example of this situation: the
parents of Timothy.
Timothy's mother was a Christian but his
father wasn't. Years later when Paul wrote to
Timothy he told Timothy to abide in those
things he was taught which he was "just a
babe." That's the key! As parents we need
to know that it is never too early to take our
children to worship services.
As parents we also need to know that
instilling in our children faith in God and in
the Bible, is the best thing we can ever do
for them. That early teaching will stay with
them the rest of their lives.
Impressions are made while they are
young. In Judges 2:10-11, we read of a gen-
eration that didn't know God. They did many
things which were evil in the sight of God.
They were idol-worshippers. But the reason
why they were ignorant of God was simply
because they weren't taught.
Their parents before them didn't take the
time to tell them all the wonderful works
and miracles God had done. We know God
was displeased with that generation but
what about the parents before them who
didn't teach them?
Another responsibility we owe our chil-
dren is discipline. Consistent and construc-
tive discipline never hurt a child. They need
and long for loving guidance.
Parents are to offer that guidance. Paul
tells us in Ephesians 6:4 "Ye Fathers, ...nur-
ture them in the chastening and admoni-
tion of the Lord." Chastening has to do with
spanking, or whatever steps are necessary
to maintain control. Admonishment has the
idea of training by word. The older the child
grows if the parents have done their job,
spankings will be fewer and admonishing
will be the main discipline.
In I Samuel 3, we see God talking to
Samuel in a vision. God told Samuel that he
would judge Eli's house. God was very dis-
pleased with Eli, and verse 13 tells us why:
Eli has no control over his sons. He practiced
very little, if any discipline. As a result they
were sinful men who knew not God (I Sam.
2:12). Eli didn't even admonish them.
Parents are you doing your job? Are you
teaching your children of God? Are you dis-
cipling your children. If America is ever to
turn back to God it will start in the home.
Proverbs 13:34 says "He that spareth the rod
hateth his son; But he that loveth him chas-
teneth him betimes."

The Gift of Laughter

It's the middle of summer. It's vacation
time. So put your feet up and smile awhile.


Let's give thanks to God for his gift of laugh-
ter; it's a wonderful blessing and a great tool
of encouragement! Remember, "The joy of
the Lord is your strength" (Nehemiah 8:10).
The Bible first mentions laughter in Gen-
esis 17:17 and 18:12. Unfortunately, Abra-
ham and Sarah used the gift of laughter in
a negative way.
They laughed at God and at his promise
to give them a son! Abraham fell face down
in laughter at this news; he was 99 years old
at the time! His wife Sarah was 90! She also
laughed when she heard the news, but when
the Lord confronted her, she denied it.
Despite their snickering, Sarah bore Abra-
ham's son nine months later. They named
him "Isaac"; the name means "laughter."
Sarah commented, "God has brought me
laughter, and everyone who hears about this
will laugh with me" (Genesis 21:6).
While we can abuse the gift of laughter,
God can also use our joy and even our laugh-
ter as a witnessing tool, pointing people to
His blessings and power.
Psalm 126:2 speaks of the laughter and
songs of joy that filled the air as God's peo-
ple returned to their homeland after years
in exile. And as the nations around them
witnessed the joy of God's people, they pro-
claimed, "The LORD has done great things
for them."
Laughter comes in all styles and shapes:
from the true belly laugh, to mere chuckles,
to giggles and cackles, to nervous laughter,
to the polite, social laugh, to an occasional
snort. And, I might add, even a silent smile
or quiet groan at a good pun!
While you may not laugh right out loud
at the following groaners, I hope that at least
one or two of them will bring a smile to your
face. And I hope you will share that joy with
others.
As humorist Josh Billings once said,
"Laughter is the sensation of feeling good all
over and showing it principally in one place."
Now for a few groaners: Thieves who steal
corn from a garden could be charged with
stalking; I wondered why the baseball was
getting bigger.
Then it hit me; If you take a laptop com-
puter for a run, you could jog your memory;
In a democracy, it's your vote that counts; in
feudalism, it's your Count that votes; With
her marriage, she got a new name and a
dress; Show me a piano falling down a
mineshaft and I'll show you A-flat miner, A
grenade fell onto a kitchen floor in France,
resulting in Linoleum Blown Apart; You are
stuck with your debt if you can't budge it. A
hard-boiled egg is hard to beat.
Let's serve the Lord and his people by
spreading joy, fun, and laughter every day!

3rd Annual Fallen Heroes Benefit scheduled to be held on July 24th


Event benefits LaBelle
Veteran's Memorial Park
Join the community of LaBelle and
the members of American Legion Post
130, DAV Chapter 144, Moose Lodge
2398 and VFW 10100 as they come
together to sponsor the Fallen Heroes
Benefit, again this year.


The benefit will start at 9:00 a.m. with
a Color Guard Ceremony at the new La-
Belle Veteran's Memorial Park, at the cor-
ner of Hwy 80 and Main Street followed
by a Pork Dinner and entertainment at
the American Legion Post 130 in LaBelle,
on Hwy. 80, The American Legion will be
open to the public Friday, Saturday and
Sunday.
Highlights of the benefit include vari-


ous door prizes donated from area busi-
nesses, such as bikes, a parachute jump
and many more.
The benefit was started in honor of
the death of two servicemen killed in ac-
tion in the late spring of 2008: Staff Sgt.
Christopher Strickland and CWO John
Hammett. both graduates of LaBelle with
strong ties to the community.
Proceeds for this year's benefit will go


toward the LaBelle Veteran's Memorial
Park that is in the process of being built.

Lake Okeechobee Scenic I *
Trail (LOST) to the public -
from June 30 to August
31. US Arm

order to accommodate
delivery of 40,000 tons of armor stone to
stockpile sites east of S-354. The stone will
be used to reinforce the Herbert Hoover
Dike in the event of a breach. The Corps
maintains about 15 emergency stockpiles
of rock near potentially vulnerable areas of
the dike.

New Fitness Program at
HRMC
Hendry Regional Medical Center's well-
ness program is committed to employee
health. Last year, employees participated in
"Path to Wellness," an eight-week program
that offered incentives for hospital staff to
lose weight, stop smoking, eat more nutri-
tiously and lead healthier lives.
In its quest to continue focusing on em-
ployee health, and through another grant pro-
vided by the Lake Okeechobee Rural Health
Network, the hospital is now offering its em-
ployees a full 16 weeks of work-out classes.
Vonnie McDaniel, a local certified person-
al trainer, will instruct participants with the
use of resistant stretch bands, leg-bands and
medicine balls for cardiovascular and body
sculpturing workouts. The exercise program
will be modified to accommodate levels of


endurance from those who are beginners to
the more advanced. Class curriculums will
be printed and provided to the group so that
they can follow the same work-out regime at
home.
The first weigh-in will be held on July 9th
at Hendry Regional Corporate Health Ser-
vices, with follow-up weigh-ins occurring
every Friday. The first class will take place
on Monday, July 12th. (Classes will continue
every Monday and Wednesday through the
16-week period and will last for 45 minutes.)
Sessions are scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to
6:15 p.m. and at 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. on
both days.
Hendry Regional's wellness program also
provides the public with free diabetes educa-
tion classes and tobacco cessation classes.

Sites offer year-long outdoor rec opportunities


Hike in the historic Everglades. Bike
through the beauty of Shingle Creek. Fish
along Paradise Run by Lake Okeechobee.
Tons of fun, free year-round activities are
available on approximately 375,000 acres
managed by the South Florida Water Man-
agement District (SFWMD) across 16 coun-
ties, from Orlando to the Keys. These public
treasures featured in the new SFWMD
interactive recreation guide provide an
escape from the daily grind.
"I am constantly amazed by the variety
of outdoor activities right in our own back-
yards," said SFWMD Executive Director
Carol Ann Wehle. "Summer is a perfect time
to come out and enjoy Florida's unique na-
ture and wildlife while spending time with
friends and family."
The District is committed to increasing
recreational access to public lands, while
continuing to manage them effectively to
meet its environmental restoration, water
supply, water quality and flood control mis-
sions. Such access is also made possible by
partnerships with local, state and federal
agencies, along with community organiza-
tions.
The SFWMD recently completed con-
struction on three day-use shelters along the
Kissimmee River and Lake Kissimmee to
provide a rest stop and destination for boat-
ers, airboaters, canoe and kayak paddlers

and other outdoor enthusiasts.
Within counties served by the District,
Stormwater Treatment Area 5 (STA-5) in
Hendry County represents a prime example
of melding effective management and resto-
ration with recreation. The Everglades wa-
ter-cleaning marsh has become a premier
bird-watching spot in the United States, with
167 species recently recorded from the area.
The District has partnered with the Hendry-
Glades Audubon Society, which leads bird-
ing tours at the STA.
STA-1 East and STA-1 West on the west-


ern fringes of Palm Beach County's urban
area, 20 miles from the coast, offer wildlife
watching, hiking and biking opportunities
Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday during
daylight hours. Trophy bass fishing in the 27
miles of canals and boating are features at
the Harold A. Campbell Public Use Area at
STA-3/4 in southwest Palm Beach County.
The Allapattah Management Area in
western Martin County offers a variety of rec-
reational opportunities from horseback rid-
ing, hiking and biking to primitive camping
and seasonal hunting. Equestrian trails are


located off Fox Brown Road and the south
levee of the C-23 canal.
The array of activities available on SFW-
MD-managed public lands also includes:
Horseback riding, bicycling, hiking and
canoeing in the KICCO Wildlife Manage-
ment Area in Polk County
Primitive camping on Drasdo within
the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes in Osceola
County accessible only by water
Hiking, horseback riding and wildlife
viewing in the DuPuis Management Area
spread across the border of Martin and Palm
Beach counties
Bank fishing in Stormwater Treatment
Area 1 East in Palm Beach County
Hunting in the Corkscrew Regional
Ecosystem Watershed (CREW) Manage-
ment Area in Lee and Collier counties
The District recently opened the Istok-
poga Canal Boat Ramp Area in Highlands
County, featuring picnic tables, shelters,
parking and bathroom facilities. Airboat and
power boat ramps connect boaters with the
Kissimmee River. The District has also sup-
ported the City of Belle Glade in enhancing
recreational opportunities on Torry Island
with the addition of a chickee hut, picnic
tables and informational signage.

Florida KidCare offers access to healthcare benefits

Get children's health
insurance for less than a
trip to the movies

There's some good news for Florida par-
ents looking for an affordable opportunity to
keep their kids healthy.
Florida KidCare is offering health insur-
ance benefits to children under the age of 19
for less than a trip to the movies. Children
have access to preventive care such as regu-
lar doctor's visits, immunizations, dental and
vision checkups.
In addition, families are protected against
catastrophic financial loss in the event of a
serious medical issue.
The majority of families enrolled pay
nothing at all; others may pay premiums that
range from $15 to $159 per month. Children
receive coverage under the program's four
components: MediKids, Children's Medical
Services Network, Healthy Kids and Chil-
dren's Medicaid.
To date, approximately 1.6 million chil-
dren are enrolled and the program is open
to accept thousands more. In the last two
months alone, 50,000 previously uninsured
children began receiving preventive care
such as regular doctor visits, immunizations,
dental check-ups and prescriptions through
Florida KidCare.
It's now even easier for families to access
Florida KidCare benefits through a more
streamlined enrollment process. An increase
in funding will also expand the program to
cover more children, helping to make sure
no child in Florida goes without health insur-


ance.
To continue toward this goal, the Gover-
nor's Office and six state agencies are work-
ing with dozens of community and business
partners to implement a statewide push to
reach families with uninsured children.
Families can apply for Florida KidCare on-
line at www.floridakidcare.org or by calling
1-888-540-5437 to receive an application by
mail.

James Robert Wiersma, 78
MOORE HAVEN James Robert "Jim" Wier-
sma, age 78, of Moore Haven, passed away July
3, 2010, in West Palm Beach, Fla.
He was born Dec. 15, 1931, in Chicago, the
son of the late George and Hallie Belle (Allen)
Wiersma. Mr. Wiersma married Donna Woods
Nov. 25, 1991, in Paducah, Ky. He was a Real-
tor.
Survivors include his wife, Donna (Woods)
Wiersma; children, Carol Fields, Joyce Ikemere,
Randy Wiersma, Keith Wiersma, Eric Kuenzer,
Mike Kuenzer; 19 grandchildren; nine great-
grandchildren; three sisters, Adaline Nelson,
Evelyn Hall, and Bette Habb.
Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Everglades and its water quality


Aquatic plants to help
remove phosphorus from
water
The South Florida Water Management
District (SFWMD) airlifted 22.5 tons of
plants to a constructed treatment wetland
to help improve the quality of water flow-
ing into America's Everglades.
District staff harvested three native spe-
cies of submerged aquatic plants South-
ern naiad, chara and Illinois pondweed -
from Cell 3 of Stormwater Treatment Area
2 (STA-2).
The plants were loaded into a large
cargo net and flown by helicopter to Cell
2 of STA-2, where they were released into
shallow waters. Approximately 30 flights
- each carrying between 1,400 and 1,500
pounds of plants -were scheduled.
Known as submerged aquatic vegeta-
tion because it grows beneath the surface
of the water, the airlifted plants will replace
cattails that have been growing in Cell 2.
District scientists expect the new plants to
increase phosphorus removal from water
moving through this cell.
Stormwater Treatment Areas are the
water-cleaning workhorses of Everglades
restoration, using plants to naturally re-
move phosphorus from water flowing into
the fabled River of Grass. The District oper-
ates a network of six STAs south of Lake
Okeechobee with a combined area of more


than 52,000 acres. Since 1994, the treat-
ment areas have retained more than 1,200
metric tons of total phosphorus that would
have otherwise entered the Everglades.

Tate & Lyle is the leading cane sug-
ar producer in the European Union.
The acquisition of its refineries in Lon-
don, England, and Lisbon, Portugal,
increases ASR's total refining capacity
to six million metric tons per year. The
211 million ($318 million) acquisi-
tion includes a license for use of the
distinguished Tate & Lyle brand in
connection with the sale of sugar.
"The acquisition of Tate & Lyle's Eu-
ropean sugar operations is consistent
with our strategic vision for expansion
in the sugar refining sector," said Luis
Fernandez, ASR Co-President.
"Tate & Lyle is steeped in 130 years
of tradition and consumer loyalty. We
recognize the importance and history
of the Tate & Lyle sugar brand and are
proud to add it to our existing brand
portfolio."
This acquisition marks the third
large-scale transaction between the
two companies. ASR purchased Tate
& Lyle North American Sugars, Inc.
(Domino Sugar) and its three refin-
eries in 2001. More recently, ASR ac-
quired Tate & Lyle Canada Ltd. (Red-
path Sugar) in 2007, which included
Canada's largest refinery.


ASR's expertise lies in the operation
of cane sugar refineries and the logis-
tics of the related supply chain as well
as the marketing of recognized retail
sugar brands.
'Sugar is a global business," said
Antonio L. Contreras, Jr., ASR Co-Pres-
ident. "This acquisition makes perfect
sense for ASR. We're sugar people
who are committed to and understand
the sugar business. The European ac-
quisition in many ways mirrors our
North American operations and will
complement our company."

Baltimore, Maryland; Chalmette, Lou-
isiana; Crockett, California; Toronto,

Public Day to be hosted at Fort Center, an archeological site on Fisheating Creek


Archeological site listed in the
National Register of Historical
Places

The Florida Public Archaeology
Network (FPAN) Southwest Region-
al Center, in conjunction with the
Southwest Florida Archaeological
Society and the Clewiston Museum,
will host a Public Day at Fort Center
on Friday, July 16, from 10 a.m.-3
p.m. Fort Center, an important Belle
Glade archaeological site on Fisheat-
ing Creek near Lake Okeechobee in
Glades County, was first excavated in
the late 1960s, and written about in
a well-known volume by William H.
Sears in 1982.
Dr. Victor Thompson of Ohio State
University, who is conducting an un-
dergraduate field school at ort Cen-
ter, will lead tours for the public along
with project team members. Thomp-
son's excavations mark the first time
in decades that the site has been sub-
ject to excavation.
In addition to site tours, FPAN will
have archaeological information
and activities available. The Clewis-
ton Museum located off of SR-80 in
downtown Clewiston, will also be
open for visitors as part of our Fort
Center Public Day. No reservations
needed.


The Fort Center site is managed
by Florida's Fish and Wildlife Com-
mission and is located off of SR-78
north of Moore Haven at the Fisheat-
ing Creek parking access. Please note
that the site is located in awooded and
undeveloped natural area, so proper
attire (long pants, sturdy shoes), sun
and rain protection, and a water sup-
ply are strongly recommended during
your visit. Restroom facilities, a park-
ing area, and picnic shelters can be
found at the entrance.
The Florida Public Archaeology
Network is a statewide program dedi-
cated to protecting and preserving
the state's fragile cultural resources
and involving the public in the study
of our past. The Town of Fort Myers
Beach Mound House hosts the South-
west Regional FPAN Center, which
serves Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hen-
dry, and Lee Counties.

school board. His memo also stated that a
Management Agreement would be needed
between the county and Washington Park
before proceeding with construction.
Discussion included multiple reasons for
the delay with the admission there had been
some "feet-dragging" by the board and oth-
ers. The board expects the county attorney
to bring the item before the board after he
gains school board approval at the July 22
meeting. July 26 is the earliest this board
will be able to review this matter again.

SFWMD: Rainy Season
Update (Gary Ritter)
Gary Ritter, Okeechobee Service Center
Director South Florida Water Management
District, gave the Board an updated review
of the WMD's operations and actions cop-
ing with control of water during the rainy
season.
According to Mr. Ritter, the current lev-
el of Lake Okeechobee is around 14 feet,
while the desirable level going into rainy
season is 12-1/2 feet, thus some releases
are being made in accordance with Corps
of Engineers schedules.
Mr. Ritter's interesting slide presentation
printout also listed items citizens can do
which include) inspect and maintain neigh-
borhood drainage systems;) clear debris
from ditches, swales and drainage grates; )
ensure canal right-of-ways are clear; )iden-
tify and address drainage problems, block-
ages or flow restrictions; and )utilize storm

Auditor Selection Committee
(Flint)
County Clerk Joe Flint, chair of the Au-
ditor Selection Committee (comprised of
Clerk Flint, Property Appraiser Larry Luck-
ey, Supervisor of Elections Holly Whiddon,
Tax Collector Gail Jones represented by Lori
Ward, Sheriff Stuart Whiddon represented
by Shelley Ridgdill, and County Commis-
sioner Donna Storter Long) again present-
ed the Board the unanimous request of the
Committee to waive a technical error and
allow consideration of McGladrey & Pullen
for ranking, though the auditing firm's pro-
posal arrived by UPS 41 minutes late.
Such action allowing the Board to waive
an error is stated in the advertised RFP as
"Glades County accepts no responsibil-
ity for any expense related to preparation
or delivery of proposals, reserves the right
to accept or reject any or all proposals, to
waive technical errors and informalities,
which in its judgment, best serves the pub-


lic interest."
The auditing firm had submitted their
proposal the day prior to the deadline with
normal ample time for delivery via UPS, but
it did not arrive on time.
Mr. Taylor had Deputy Clerk Braddock
connect via telephone with Commissioner
Echols who was absent, in order that a full
board vote could resolve the matter since it
deadlocked in the last Board meeting with
a 2-2 vote.
The Board moved to proceed with nego-
tiations with three auditing firms not includ-
ing McGladrey & Pullen. The motion carried
3-2, with Jones and Storter dissenting.

Glades County Youth
Livestock Agreement
(Taylor)
Mr. Taylor stated the drafts of lease
agreement and management agreement
documents in the packet were prepared
by Attorney Pringle and had been reviewed
and edited by Judge Jack Lundy on behalf
of Glades County Youth Livestock.
The agreements have been prepared to
effectuate the Board's desire to financially
assist the not-for-profit entity in its efforts
supporting Glades County's youth involve-
ment with livestock.

Mr. Taylor said the Board should be pre-
pared by the next meeting to discuss and
review completion of the documents, in-
cluding determination of dates and finan-
cial considerations.

County manager and
department heads
Public Safety Director Bob Jones pre-
sented the Board a packet listing the items
funded by a recent HRS grant, including
two new 2008 Freightliner MWAEV Type 1
ambulances for $199,998 each, one $25,425
Smart Stat Training Manikin, two $10,030
Stryker power stretchers, and three I-State
System Blood Analyzers at $10,000 each.

Commissioner items and
comments
Commissioner Giesler stated his vote on
the auditor selection wasn't really from his
"heart," but felt it was the best way to go
legally.
Commissioner Storter, who represents
the board on the Glades County Glades To-
bacco Free Partnership, introduced Sarah
Litchy, the new Glades County Health Dept.
Tobacco Prevention Specialist. Ms. Litchy
explained her purpose and objective of pre-
venting the purchase and use of tobacco
products, including smokeless tobacco,
by the area youth, with a specific goal of
achieving consistent tobacco policies in the
schools, and smoke-free parks and youth
recreation areas in the county.


Commissioner Storter commented on
the completion of phase one of the new
Muse Community Playground, and invited
Muse Community Association President
Jim Cianfrani to elaborate.
He stated a formal dedication would be
held in cooler weather, but the playground/
park is being used including the covered
picnic areas with grills, and that the Asso-
ciation was able to save $2,400 on the sig-
nage for the Vita-Course Fitness equipment
by purchasing locally instead of thru the
equipment manufacturer.
Mr. Cianfrani stated they had planted 200
pounds of Pensacola Bahia seed and the re-
cent rains were really helping it grow and
the park is looking nice.
He said MCA held a sign design contest at
West Glades School in Muse, and the fifth-
grade participants were treated to a pizza
luncheon and winners given savings bonds.
The first place winner's sign has been made
into a 2' x 3' metal sign for placement in the
park. He thanked the Board, Mr. Taylor and
Road Dept. for all their assistance.
Commissioner Storter announced that
the Ortona Community Association's on-
going summer recreation program is a great
success, with an average of 25 children per
day attending.
She said it was lasting longer this year
with 13 day-sessions plus a field trip to the
Imaginarium in Fort Myers. OCA funds the
program with no county assistance, and
appreciates support from all at its spaghetti
dinners and other fund-raising events.
Recently Glades County Agriculture Ex-
tension Agent Tycee Prevatt brought craft
items to the group, and taught each one
how to make homemade ice cream in in-
dividual packets.
Sheriff Stuart Whiddon's office is send-
ing Officer McGruff, the Crime Prevention
"Canine" with some special Deputies to
give a presentation on law enforcement
and crime prevention. Also scheduled is
a visit by Public Safety Director Bob Jones
and staff with a fire truck and ambulance
"show".
Commendations are due OCA's Chil-
dren's Program Coordinator Amanda Bill-
ings with her assistant, Chick Ghitter, and
the tireless efforts of volunteers April Beaver
and Marie Kussman.
Several mid-day luncheons have been
donated by Ortona citizens, and the chil-
dren have held bake sales and a car wash
to earn funding. This is a community effort,
very worthwhile.
Storter thanked Mr. Taylor for the recent
update list of on-going county projects and
asked about the CR720 resurfacing project.
He stated it is scheduled to be finished in
August, but was a FDOT project under their
control.
He also told her the Moore Haven Canal
project application to DEP should be ready
for submission by mid-July.

Code, Section 841 (a)(1).
They face a mandatory minimum of 10
years in federal prison on each count, up
to a $4,000,000 fine and lifetime supervised
release.
The investigation involved sham co-
caine, and no actual cocaine was smuggled
inside of Moore Haven Correctional.
During the investigation, FBI undercover
agents represented to the defendants that
they were members of a purported drug
trafficking group, interested in having the
defendants protect and facilitate the under-

rance for the Hendry County Board of County Commissioners, Hendry
County Tax Collector, Hendry County Clerk of Court, Hendry County Proper-
ty Appraiser and Hendry County Supervisor of Elections. Companies offer-
ing group employee medical, dental, life and vision insurance policies and
employee assistance plans are encouraged to submit their proposal for con-
sideration. All submittals (see Section I, General Information) received in re-
sponse to this RFP will be reviewed by an evaluation committee. In order to
be considered, submittals must be received by the Board of County Com-
missioners at the C.E. Hall Building (Clerk's Office) in the Hendry County
