. .. Theater will hold

.open house

The S.R. 29 Bridge in LaBelle will have closures in June during the night. Some closures will
be for both lanes, and some closures will be one lane with flaggers for two-way traffic. Full time
closure begins July 5.

The Firehouse
Cultural Center
offers local
entertainment
By Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat
GLADES HENDRY -- Commu-
nity theaters across America have
been overlooked as a source of lo-
cal entertainment, fellowship and
arts preservation. The Firehouse
Cultural Center (FCC) in LaBelle
preserves the ancient art of story-
telling and childhood play, which
has amused mankind since the
days of the caveman and cave-

woman.
"The theatre has been around
for over 17 years, yet people do
not know it exists," said Susan
Malcolm, FCC member.
Ms. Malcolm is just one of the
members who lives in Glades
County and enjoys volunteering to
have a good time. They are having
an open house on June 5th and
the FCC will open the theater so
everyone can come in, talk and
see what they do. They want to
get the word out that community
theater is a great place to start, if
you have any interest in the the-
ater or a new hobby. New volun-
teers, especially younger folks are
welcome.

By Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat
GLADES -- The Glades County
Tobacco Free Partnership con-
vened May 20 at the Moore Haven
High School library. Concerned
members of the community in
attendance were from local gov-
ernment, schools, health depart-
ment, neighboring counties and
the state agency of Alcoholic Bev-

erages and Tobacco.
Sarah Litchy, a newly recruited
coordinator, led the meeting and
introduced plans for recruiting
members and making the public
aware of the work behind the to-
bacco free organization.
The partnership wishes to in-
vite new members who could
have a significant influence on
young people who have not be-
come addicted to tobacco. Many
long-time tobacco users wish
they had never started smoking
or dipping. Their knowledge of
its hazards can be made known

Ed Bailey recalls the
early days of
Lakeport community
By Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat
GLADES Ed Bailey has vivid
memories of Lakeport beginning
in 1936. He recalled this history
during a meeting with Friends of
the Library, May 17, at the Glades
County Public Library in Moore
Haven. Much of the informa-
tion was documented in 2005 by
member, Debbie Paschal, which

was transferred to a dvd and ar-
chived into the history room by
library staff.
Ed Baily retold how he arrived
in Lakeport when he was six years
old with his mother and little sis-
ter. His mom managed a fish
camp as the chief cook and bottle
washer. He commented the only
place to buy necessities was at Ed
Beck's store or Compton's store.
Their home had no running water
nor electricity. They poled a small
boat out to the clear water of Lake
Okeechobee because there was
no well. Poling was done because
it was much faster than rowing.

CenturyLink offers telephone assistance to

individuals living on Tribal Lands
CenturyLink is energizing its efforts to inform residents of two assistance programs that provide
discounts on initial telephone installation and basic monthly telephone service to qualifying low-
income consumers. Link-Up helps these consumers pay the initial costs of getting telephone
service. Lifeline provides certain discounts on monthly service for qualified subscribers.

Lifeline and Link-Up are available to qualifying consumers in every U.S. state (territory and
commonwealth). Qualifications for participation vary by state. States with their own programs
have their own criteria. In states that rely solely on the federal program, the subscriber must par-
ticipate in one of the following programs: Medicaid, food stamps, Supplemental Security
Income (SSI), Federal Public Housing Assistance or the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance
Program (LIHEAP), Head Start, the National School Lunch Program's Free Lunch Program,
Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) or if the Household annual gross income is at
or below 135% of the federal poverty level.
The amount of the discounts also varies by state. Link-Up helps qualified low-income con-
sumers to connect to the telephone network. This federal program offsets 1/2 of the initial hook-
up fee, up to $30, for qualified households.

Residents of American Indian and Alaskan Native tribal lands may qualify for an additional $25
of enhanced Lifeline support monthly and up to $70 of expanded Link-Up support beyond cur-
rent levels. An individual living on tribal lands may also qualify for Lifeline and Link-Up dis-
counts if he or she participates in one of the above programs or one of the following federal pro-
grams: Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance or Tribally-Administered Temporary
Assistance to Needy Families.

Individuals living in a CenturyLink service area should call 800-201-4099 or
visit www.centurylink.com/lifeline to inquire about eligibility.

Water Illness Prevention Week: Enjoy the water but be safe

By Pat Dobbins
The Florida Department of Health recog-
nizes May 24 through May 30 as Recreation-
al Water Illness Prevention Week. The Hen-
dry and Glades County Health Departments
would like to remind parents and families
about healthy and safe swimming behaviors
that should be practiced year-round.
Recreational Water Illnesses (RWI's) are
illnesses spread by swallowing, breathing

in vapors of, or having contact with con-
taminated water in swimming pools, wa-
ter parks, spas, interactive fountains, lakes,
rivers, or oceans. Everyone can help cre-
ate healthy swimming experiences. Follow
these tips when swimming in a pool:
Try not to swallow pool water.
Take children on bathroom breaks or
check diapers often. Change diapers in a
bathroom or a diaper-changing area and not
at poolside.

Follow these tips when swimming in
fresh water lakes and rivers:
Avoid water-related activities in bodies
of warm freshwater, hot springs, and ther-
mally-polluted water such as water around
power plants.
Avoid water-related activities in warm
freshwater during periods of high water
temperature and low water levels.
Everyone can help create a safe recre-
ational water environment by practicing

these tips:
Watch children at all times
Avoid drinking alcohol before or during
swimming, boating or other water activities.
Adults should learn cardiopulmonary re-
suscitation (CPR). In the time it might take
for paramedics to arrive, your CPR skills
could make a difference in someone's life.
CPR performed by bystanders has been
shown to improve outcomes in drowning
victims.

Lessons learned: How we
speak and how God speaks
By The Reverend Samuel S.
Thomas, Ph.D. +
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
I learned something awhile ago visiting in
a hospital. Many times I'd see a teacher try to
out-shout a class of boisterous students and
fail to get their attention. I've seen adults,
each fighting for the attention of the other
with voices raised, speaking at the same
time, interrupting and each being rude. It
doesn't work.
As I entered the room and greeted the
patient, there was a television on and noise
that made it difficult to hear. I spoke a bit
loudly to make my greeting above the noise
of the TV set and got a loud greeting back,
then a loss of attention.
I began to speak softly. The patient said
"Wait a minute, let me turn that TV down"
and our conversation continued. The lesson
was plain; I didn't have to shout to be heard
and I wanted to hear from my patient but
we'd need to be able to speak at a comfort-
able level if it was to happen. Other times
I've told people "I'll come back when you're
not as busy" with the understanding that
maybe what was going on elsewhere was
more important or had them preoccupied.
That is perfectly all right; a recognition
of their right to set their own priorities, the
rubrics of courtesy not withstanding. One
person spoke at high volume whenever she
wished to tell anybody anything at all. I'd
tell her "...use your indoor voice!" Now and
again I observe the communications among
persons; their volume, their tendency to in-
terrupt, their need to direct, their rapidity of
their speech, their refusal to listen to what
others are saying, their choice of words,
whether they are polite or rude, the expres-
sions on their faces as they are haranguing
others, and all of the signs that say no com-
munication going on whatsoever.
Amidst all of the noise that passes for
speech, it is no wonder that many people
feel ignored and many do not feel heard. Do
we shout louder or do we make our pres-
ence known by refusing to shout? Elijah (1
Kings 19) is concerned about hearing, and
being heard by God.
He is directed to "go out and stand on
the mountain (v. 11)" and there is a power-
ful wind "but the Lord was not in the wind."
There followed an earthquake, but the Lord
was not in the earthquake (ibid.). Then fol-
lowed a fire; and again, the Lord was not in
the fire. After the fire came a gentle whisper
(v. 12) and it was in the gentle whisper that
the voice of the Lord was heard. God doesn't
have to shout to be heard if we want to lis-
ten. In fact, we don't have to shout at each
other, either.
If anything, all of the shouting and noise
keeps us from hearing and being heard. It
just may be that we need to change our
ways of communicating if we are to hear
God or one another. At least, it deserves a
real serious try!

Facing Our Giants
By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church

A teacher was giving an exam to identify
notable figures in the Bible. One of the ques-
tions was, "Who said, "Give me a man?"
One student wrote down "Rahab, the har-
lot." Smiling at the answer, the teacher gave
the student credit for the question, even
though the answer he was looking for was,
"Goliath".
The ancient Israelites were in the field
preparing for battle against their Philistine
enemies. In those days it was customary for
two individuals to duel first in a fight to the
death, with that battle setting the tone for
the entire war.
Goliath, a giant of a man who was head
and shoulders above those around him,
stepped out from the gathered Philistine
army and gave a challenge: "Give me a man,
that we may fight together."
No one wanted to take Goliath up on his
challenge. Visualize, if you can, a man who
is three feet taller than Shaquille O'Neil and
a lot uglier. Now cover him from head to
foot in sheet metal. Any wonder why no-one
wanted to take that challenge?
Then a little guy by the name of David
volunteered to go forward for the Israel-
ites to face Goliath. The Israelites said, "No
way!" but David was determined. They tried
putting the king's armor on him, but it was
too big and too much.
So David went to the stream and chose
five smooth stones, and went out to face
Goliath wearing only his shepherd' clothing
and carrying a sling shot. He didn't even take
a sword or spear.
Despite all appearances, David was ready
for his confrontation with the giant Goliath
because he believed that God was on his
side. Faith is not just believing God can. Faith
is knowing God will.
Too many of us today have difficulty mak-
ing the connection between our personal
faith and our everyday lives. Our faith can
make a difference in how we face difficulty,
if we embrace it and step out on it. We need
to see that our faith in God can give us con-
fidence to battle whatever giants come our
way.
The story of David and Goliath is not just
a lesson on the power of positive thinking.
It's the story of a God who whispers to us
that we can do it; that He will be with us;
and that with His help we shall prevail. You
know the outcome of this story. David felled
Goliath with a single stone and the battle
was won.
May the same God who went into bat-
tle with David be with you in your battles,
whether those battles are physical or finan-
cial, social or emotional or even mental.
Trust in God. He will give us the victory!

A message for Memorial Day
By Jackie Miller, Evangelist
First Christian Church
This letter was written by Sgt. Jeffry Davis
who was killed in Vietnam, Sept. 6, 1968. He
wrote it to his fiance to be read only if he did
not return from the war. He was a member
of he Christian Church in Brownsburg, In-
diana:
"Well, if you are reading this my short but
full life has ended. However, I'm not sad or
hurt; I'm happy where I am now. I am free of
the great responsibilities that life puts upon a

person. It is too bad I had to die in another
country. The United States is so wonderful,
but at least I died for a reason, and a good
one. I may not understand this war, or like it,
or want to fight it, but nevertheless I had to
do it and I did...I died for the people of the
United States.
I died really for you, you were my one
real happiness. I died also for your Mom
and Dad so that they could go on working
at Grant's and Chevrolet. For your brothers
that they could play sports in freedom with-
out Communist Rule. I died for my parents
that they could enjoy my Dad's retirement in
freedom, go on vacations and have fun.
Nancy, so you could raise your sons to
be morally and physically straight in a free
world, or country at least. For Duke, whom
I admired my whole life. For others who en-
joy this wonderful country, and who appre-
ciate what they have and thank God every
day for it. I died for the guys with long hair
and protest signs.
The draft card burners, the hippies, "the
anti-everything people" who have nothing
better to do. The college kids who think they
shouldn't have to serve because they are so

I WE E PRCTICALLY

good. I died so these people could have a
little longer time to try to get straightened
out in life.
God knows they need it! Yes, I died for
the so called "younger-generation", of
which I was a part but for some unknown
reason I never became an active member.
I guess I was "a square" or something with
short hair, no police record, didn't drink or
do drugs or practice illicit sex. I am hopeful
that my death has not been in vain."
President Ronald Reagan said,"While
America's military strength is important, let
me add here that I have always maintained
that the struggle now going on for the world
will never be decided by bombs or rockets,
by armies or military might.
"The real crisis is a SPIRITUAL ONE: at
root it is a test of moral will and faith. The
source of our strength in the quest for hu-
man freedom is not material but SPIRITUAL,
and because it knows no limitation, it must
terrify and ultimately triumph over those
who would enslave their fellow man."

Recent unfortunate weekend for Florida panthers

should not reverse their population growth

Three panthers in three days met untime-
ly ends on U.S. 41, a highway that cuts right
through the middle of panther habitat in Col-
lier County. On Sunday, the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)
found a 6- to 8-month-old kitten that was hit
early that morning.
Officials with the FWC believed the moth-
er of the kitten could be close to the highway
and stepped up law enforcement patrols in
the area Sunday.
The panther population has increased
five-fold since the 1980s, when the popula-
tion had dwindled to 20-30.
Its increase to a current estimate of 100 is
a success story, but one tempered with the
knowledge that an increasing population
means more opportunity for vehicle colli-
sions.
"Losing three panthers in three days sad-
dens all who care for these endangered ani-
mals. However, we're heartened when we
have a good capture season like this past
one, when we captured 11 new panthers,"

said Darrell Land, the FWC's panther team
leader.
"Panthers breed throughout the year,
and our radio-collared females have already
produced 12 kittens. The increase in panther
numbers also means that more panthers are
roaming the roadways in the Big Cypress
area, and drivers should always obey the
panther speed zones and slow down from
dusk to dawn no matter where they might
be driving."
Land noted that two litters of kittens have
been lost because of the death of their moth-
ers in the past two months. Kittens are not
able to survive on their own until they are
big enough to capture prey at approximately
8 months old.
The natural expansion of the panther
population means that panther sightings
may start to increase throughout Florida;
however, the majority of the population still
resides south of Lake Okeechobee.
To help protect the large cats from in-
creasing traffic threats, the FWC, Collier

County and Lee County sheriff's deputies
and the Florida Highway Patrol regularly en-
force panther speed zones.
Panther speed zones are well-marked,
with speed limits reduced at night to 45
mph.
So far this year, 66 citations and nine
warnings have been issued to motorists vio-
lating panther speed zones.
Motorists should be aware that violators
often receive fines exceeding $200 for their
first offense, and any violation of more than
29 mph over the posted limit will result in a
mandatory court appearance.
"The increasing number of panther road
kills mirrors the increase in panther num-
bers," Land said. "However, this does not in-
dicate that the increase of collisions is caus-
ing the population to decrease.
The FWC continues to work closely with
the Florida Department of Transportation to
develop measures that will increase motorist
and panther safety along Florida's roads."
FDOT has constructed wildlife cross-

ings, erected fencing and established special
panther speed zones, which help lessen the
danger to panthers on the roadways.
Panther research and management fund-
ing comes directly from the additional fees
collected when individuals purchase the
"Protect the Florida panther" specialty li-
cense plate. Money also goes to law enforce-
ment to increase patrols in the areas where
panthers reside in South Florida.
"We can all assist with helping the pan-
ther survive," Land said.
"Buy a specialty plate to help fund re-
search, management and enforcement. Lots
of people will be on the road this Memorial
Day weekend, so please slow down in pan-
ther speed zones, particularly from dusk to
dawn, when panthers are most active."

Moore Haven LIONS Club recruiting,

planning for events and new members

Although many non-profit organizations
are failing or losing members, Florida LIONS
Clubs are tightening their belts and banding
together to continue service to children and
adults worldwide.
This small group of volunteers is a valu-
able segment of over 45,000 clubs com-
prised of 1.3 million people called LIONS
members. The club actually started in 1917
when a community volunteer, Melvin Jones,
in Illinois, queried, "What if people put their
talents together to help and improve com-
munities?"
Moore Haven LIONS, members of Mul-
tiple District 35, are the epitome of compas-
sionate, helpful citizens.
They collect eye glasses that can be re-
conditioned and distributed to needy people.

They collect donations that provide financial
assistance to the Florida LIONS Camp in
Lake Wales, Florida.
This summer camp will soon be filled
with all sorts of campers, ages five to fif-
teen, some with disabilities and some just in
need of healthy recreation, role models and
friendship.
Over 600 children and adults shared in
these fun, educational camping experiences
last year.
This year plans are to include more "typi-
cal" children with the program concentrat-
ing not only on disabilities but abilities.
Plans for the Moore Haven LIONS Club
2010 winter season include the organization
of a community yard sale with food booths
for all non-profit groups, to be held in Perry

Park on the river.
The 2008-09 president, L.C. Roundtree, of
Moore Haven, declined accepting an officiat-
ing officer position telling fellow members
that he will help in all other ways.
Newly elected officers for the 2010 sea-
son are Stewart Whiddon, president, 1st
vice president, L.C. Roundtree, 2nd vice
president, Anne L. Coffey, Maria Pheeney,
secretary, Kirby Sullivan, treasurer, and L.C.
Roundtree, membership chairman.
Please join us on the fourth Tuesday of
every month at the American Legion Hall on
River Road.
A homecooked dinner is served at every
meeting at 5 p.m. Remember the LIONS
motto -WE SERVE

ship Program is designed to recognize FFA
Members' talents and accomplishments
while encouraging their future academic
achievements.
The scholarship is one of 457 scholar-
ships awarded by Ford Division, Ford Motor
Company Fund and the Ford Dealers to FFA
members who are high school seniors plan-

ning to attend college in the fall of 2010, as
well as current collegiate students. This pro-
gram is a part of Ford's overall commitment
to the National FFA Foundation.
Additionally, 5 $ 1,000 national scholar-
ships are being awarded on behalf of Ford
Motor Company. Ford Truck sponsors these
five scholarships as a special project of the
National FFA Foundation.
Ford has supported the National FFA
Foundation since the first F-Series truck was
introduced in 1948, and has sponsored the
Built Ford Tough collegiate scholarship pro-
gram since 1997. To date, the program has
awarded more than $6,056,000 in scholar-
ships to more than 6,056 FFA members
throughout the country. Ford knows the
value of hard work, and believes that hard
work should be rewarded. Educating aspir-
ing young people to become the leaders of

tomorrow is just another way of ensuring a
successful future.
The National FFA Organization, formerly
known as the Future Farmers of America, is
a national youth organization of 506,199 stu-
dent members all preparing for leadership
and careers in the science, business and
technology of agriculture as part of 7,429
local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto
Rico and the Virgin Islands. The National
FFA Organization changed to its present
name in 1988, in recognition of the growth
and diversity of agriculture and agricultural
education. The FFA mission is to make a
positive difference in the lives of students by
developing their potential for premier lead-

Most people have never heard of a kero-
sene-fueled Electrolux refrigerator, but that
is exactly what they used when he was a
kid. He had the responsibility of keeping the
fuel tank filled with kerosene. He admits he
was an ornery kid and sometimes he could
not be found, so he would get into plenty
of trouble when he forgot to fuel up the re-
frigerator.
As a youngster he was eager to earn
money working at many tasks. Local kids
were paid to shoot rice-eating black birds at
a rice field that was farmed on the ridge near
lake. Snakes were captured live because
they could be sold to scientists who studied
them or their venom.
They gathered fox grapes, red grapes, el-
derberries and guava fruit which was turned
into jelly or wine. During the winter they
trapped mammals for hides. Gators and
frog legs were sold, too. Ed Bailey remem-
bers harvesting eight to ten pounds of frogs
in one night.
He received a 20 gage shotgun at age 12,
and supplied food for the family when he
went bird hunting. Catfish were plentiful
and many commercial fishermen operated
on the big lake. Farming, fishing and ranch-
ing kept food on the table. He mentioned
they ate everything they brought home from
a hunt or fishing trip. It was part of Old Flor-
ida survival.
Mr. Bailey happily told about his pet duck
and chicken. Someone gave him a green-
headed mallard duckling; later he received a
biddy, which is a baby chicken. He was very
fond of them.
"They were good buddies," he said.
They slept and fed together, but the chick
was highly frustrated when the duckling got
in the water to take a bath.
He mentioned he was a tough and skinny
kid who could outrun many dogs. Once, a
neighbor had a pet raccoon; and he kind of

teased it sometimes. Eventually the 'coon
grew up and took the woods to live. It made
its home close by and one day little Ed
walked past her territory. She must have had
babies because she came running after him
and intended to do harm. Mr. Bailey recalls
he was about one-half mile from home, and
he ran at top speed. He reached the screen
door of the house and as soon as it slammed
shut he heard her crash into it.
Even though young Ed and other kids had
close calls with venomous snakes and scaly
alligators, the worst thing that happened to
him was assuming the role of Superman.

He leaped a ditch with a mighty bound and
landed on a coffee can with a sharp, open
lid. He cut his shin badly, and when he went
home his mom almost fainted at the sight of
the gaping, bloody wound. Doctors were not
everywhere back then, so his mom cleaned
the cut and taped it together.
The members of Friends of the Library
greatly enjoyed Mr. Bailey's recollections
of early Lakeport days in Glades County.
Other business at the meeting included the
announcement of summer programs for
youth.

Seat belt laws will be enforced

Click It or Ticket campaign
can save lives

By Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat

GLADES -- The 10th Annual Click It or
Ticket campaign, May 24 through June 6,
begins in Florida with a zero tolerance for
motorists who fail to wear a safety belt. A
primary safety belt law was passed in Florida
last year which allows law enforcement offi-
cers to pull over motorists that are not wear-
ing safety equipment. The campaign coin-
cides with Memorial Day weekend, which
starts the summer vacation season. Nation-
wide, law enforcement will be vigilant in its
life-saving effort to support seat belt laws.
Motor vehicle safety experts have negat-
ed several misconceptions about seat belt
usage. Some people who do not wear seat
belts think that they would rather be thrown
free of a crash. However, chances are that

you will be thrown through the windshield,
scraped along the pavement or will have a
vehicle roll over your body. Many fear being
trapped in a fire or underwater, but officials
say that your impact injury will impair you
or render you unconscious so you cannot
escape.
Some worry that seat belts can hurt you
in a crash. Authorities report that they can
cause surface bruises and are far less seri-
ous than severe injuries in a crash. Even if
a vehicle has air-bags, it is wiser to buckle
up; because in the crash occupants can slide
under the bags. Air bags do not help in side
or rear impacts or in roll-overs.
When people are running an errand close
to home they may think there is no need for a
seat belt since they will not go far or fast. Ac-
cording to officials, most crash deaths occur
close to home and at speeds of less than 40
miles per hour. This emphasizes that every-
day driving from just one neighbor's home
to another, to school, to the store or just one
farm to another poses the greatest danger.

According to the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration, motorists should al-
ways buckle up.
In 2009, the percentage of seat belt usage
by vehicle type was 89.3 percent for vans,
88.6 percent for SUVs, 86.7 percent for cars,
and 79.8 percent for pickups. In Florida dur-
ing 2008, 73 percent of the 21 to 24 year olds
killed in traffic crashes were not buckled up
- the highest percentage of all age groups.
According to the Florida Department of
Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, in 2008,
there were 8 deaths in Glades County due
to lack of seat belt use. Hendry County had
9 deaths, Okeechobee County had 3 deaths,
and in Charlotte County it was 6. Statistics
show from July 2009 to the present, 242 seat
belt citations have been issued in Glades
County.
The Glades County Community Traffic
Safety Team believes buckling up is the most
effective way to reduce the risk of injury or
death in a motor vehicle crash.

Mary Booher, librarian, mentioned state
aid for public libraries was put back into the

resentative Tom Rooney. He and other leg-

the public and library workers.

Theater
Continued From Page 1

The theater is located on Bridge Street in
the historic section of LaBelle. The facility
was actually the old fire department build-
ing in downtown LaBelle during the days
Old Florida. Audience seating, the stage, the
decor and entrance way are charming and
the atmosphere will remind people of how
movie and dinner theaters used to feel like,
but you have to take a step inside to get a
look. Attend the meeting on June 5, or buy a
ticket and enjoy a show when the new sea-
son begins in the early fall.
Travis Dowhen, Bob Way, and Fran Way
are members from Ortona in Glades County
who are eager to let other county communi-
ties know that FCC provides entertainment,
and an excuse to get out of the house and
escape from satellite television. In addition
to attracting volunteers, they are also look-
ing for people to attend theater shows, mu-
sic events, magic shows and other perfor-
mances.
Joining a community theater can allow
a person to enjoy the arts and be physically
active. It takes a little elbow grease to con-
struct background props or set up lighting
and sound for music and actors. It takes cre-
ativity to sew or arrange costumes from for-
gotten fashions. The FCC from time to time
sets up in the community for fund raising
events, too.
The community actors will happily train
volunteers so they do not feel like they are
left flapping in the wind. Some openings
include help with the box office, education
coordinator, and ushers. The box office sells
tickets, handles phones, and helps custom-
ers. The education coordinators introduce
groups to the theater and offer workshops
held in the facility. Ushers greet and seat pa-
trons and run the concession stand. Some
light housekeeping duties will be needed,
but it is a great way to get introduced to the
theater.
Creative costumers will sew and use fash-
ion skills while they work with the director
and producer. The key-grip does technical

to children and teens. Clients from cessation
classes are needed to give the perspective of
the tobacco user.
Members were encouraged to study state
and local laws such as county and city ordi-
nances, processes for obtaining a retail to-
bacco license, guidelines for enforcement of
tobacco sales laws; and observe how neigh-
boring county partnerships accomplish their
goals.
Media sources for education and aware-
ness include church bulletins, business
marquees and signs; posters in hair salons,
stores, gas stations, bars, restaurants, news-
papers, newsletters, blogs and regional TV
stations. Posting of tobacco free signs are
at many locations in Hendry County, and it
is possible this could start at Glades County
locations like the health department facility,
parks, the library, historical buildings, and

Their children and grand children will be de-
lighted to see them on the stage. According
to Terri Lazar, FCC secretary, volunteering
can boost your memory, develop your pub-
lic speaking and bolster your confidence.
The last production of the year in March
was a radio adaptation of H,G. Wells' sci-fi/
suspense "The Time Machine". It was a suc-
cess and customers wrote letters to tell them
how much they loved it. The stage was set
up like a radio station from the 1940's, and
old-time sound effects were used to provide
the audience with a sense of really being
there with the time traveler.
The open house will be Saturday, June
5 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Firehouse Cultural
Center is located on 241 North Bridge Street
in LaBelle. See how the organization pre-
pares for the fall and winter season. They

Community actors combine work and play while they rehearse as a radio show
quartet for "The Time Machine" at the Firehouse Cultural Center. An open house

light and sound, and will ensure the safety
of the actors on stage. A director position
chooses the play, finds the actors and is re-
sponsible for stage production. The produc-
er position works with the director and as-
sures all business aspects of the production
are complete, and will need some computer
and e-mail skills.
Social networkers will help organize Fa-
cebook, Twitter, Vimeo and the web page.
This position needs a computer, cell phone
and Tweet capability. Fund raisers are need-
ed to assist with two or three fund raisers a
year. This can be a committee of people who
would like to work towards taking the name
of Firehouse Cultural Center into the com-
munity of Hendry, Glades and Lee Counties.
Actors will be the most visible of the vol-
unteers. For many, FCC is their first stage ex-
perience. According to Susan Malcolm, they
will have guidance and will have fun, too.
Laughing is required while new actors learn
their lines, receive direction, don their cos-
tumes and learn stage left from stage right.
