Glades County Democrat
GLADES HENDRY -- The Hen-
dry Glades Homeless Coalition
(HGHC) is a volunteer organiza-
tion. According to Erica Villafuerte,
president, is hoping to help the
organization raise funds for the
homeless. Ms. Villafuerte is also
the Glades County Housing Ad-
ministrator. She explained that the
coalition is a non profit agency that
attempts to fill the gaps of assisting
those that are homeless.
They fill the gaps in services
that other social service agencies
do not provide or are unable to
provide. HGHC assists only those
that are literally homeless and have
exhausted all other sources of as-
sistance.
"We have provided hotel/mo-
tel vouchers for a few nights stay,
food, blankets, toiletries, transpor-
tation assistance to a shelter or like
place," said Ms. Villafuerte.
The coalition held a fund raiser
at Barron Park in LaBelle, May 8.

alition vice president, Aida
Barnhart, left, and president,
Erica Villfuerte, right, organized
the Mothers Day event at Bar-
ron Park in LaBelle, May 7.
The Mother's Day Breakfast was
a charming event for children and
their families. An inexpensive, yet
delicious breakfast was served,
and vendors were set up with in-
expensive items that children and
teens could by for their moms. Ap-
proximately ten vendors were set
up under the giant live oak trees at
the park.
Barron Park is located in his-
toric, downtown LaBelle with a
view of the Caloosahatchee River.
Volunteers and vendors had fund
raisers and raffles to support the
coalition.

CenturyLink offers telephone assistance to
individuals living on Tribal Lands
CenturyLink is energizing its efforts to inform residents of two assistance programs that provide
discounts on initial telephone installation and basic monthly telephone service to qualifying low-
income consumers. Link-Up helps these consumers pay the initial costs of getting telephone
service. Lifeline provides certain discounts on monthly service for qualified subscribers.
Lifeline and Link-Up are available to qualifying consumers in every U.S. state (territory and
commonwealth). Qualifications for participation vary by state. States with their own programs
have their own criteria. In states that rely solely on the federal program, the subscriber must par-
ticipate in one of the following programs: Medicaid, food stamps, Supplemental Security
Income (SSI), Federal Public Housing Assistance or the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance
Program (LIHEAP), Head Start, the National School Lunch Program's Free Lunch Program,
Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) or if the Household annual gross income is at
or below 135% of the federal poverty level.
The amount of the discounts also varies by state. Link-Up helps qualified low-income con-
sumers to connect to the telephone network. This federal program offsets 1/2 of the initial hook-
up fee, up to $30, for qualified households.
Residents of American Indian and Alaskan Native tribal lands may qualify for an additional $25
of enhanced Lifeline support monthly and up to $70 of expanded Link-Up support beyond cur-
rent levels. An individual living on tribal lands may also qualify for Lifeline and Link-Up dis-
counts if he or she participates in one of the above programs or one of the following federal pro-
grams: Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance or Tribally-Administered Temporary
Assistance to Needy Families.
Individuals living in a CenturyLink service area should call 800-201-4099 or
visit www.centurylink.com/lifeline to inquire about eligibility.

Tobacco Free Florida recognizes 'No Tobacco Day'

World No Tobacco Day is celebrated
around the world every year on May 31 to
inform the public on the dangers of using
tobacco, the marketing practices of tobacco
companies, and steps that the World Health
Organization is taking to combat the tobac-
co epidemic.
For decades, tobacco companies have
glamorized their products to attract women
through placement in motion pictures, mu-

sic tours and catchy advertisements in wom-
en's magazines. Even the product packaging
has been altered to appeal to women by cre-
ating slimmer and designer-inspired cases.
The Students Working Against Tobacco
(SWAT) Chapters from local schools will
conduct World No Tobacco Day events
throughout the Memorial Day weekend. As
a local theme for this year, the SWAT youth
and the County Tobacco-Free Partnership

will use "Enjoying a Tobacco-Free Holiday".
The SWAT youth and Partnership members
will be encouraging residents to participate
in Memorial Day events that are Tobacco-
Free. Throughout the Memorial Day week-
end you will find SWAT youth and Tobacco-
Free Partnership members conducting street
marketing events, gathering vital informa-
tion about tobacco-free policy from citizens
and encouraging tobacco users to utilize the

local Tobacco Cessation services.
Tobacco Free Florida is a statewide effort
to educate the public about the dangers of
all tobacco use and to help those who use
tobacco to "Be Free" and break the cycle of
addiction. The campaign has reached mil-
lions of Floridians through its advertising,
online social media, grassroots initiatives,
educational outreach and public relations
efforts.

Rabies Exposure Not just from bites

By Pat Dobbins
Some wild animals can be very cute and
if an animal is sick or injured, your first in-
stinct might be to try to help it. Please avoid
contact with any wild or stray animals to
protect you and your family from the risk of
rabies exposure.
In our area, raccoons, bats, and foxes
are the animals most frequently diagnosed
with rabies. Other animals that are at high
risk for rabies can include skunks, fox, ot-
ters, bobcats, and let's not forget the stray
or unvaccinated cats, dogs, and ferrets. Each
year Hendry and Glades Counties receives
several reports of rabid animals. "Rabies is
a potentially fatal disease. It is important not
to handle wild animals, be aware of unusual
acting animals, and keep pets vaccinated
against rabies," said Brian Prowant, Envi-
ronmental Health Director of the Hendry &
Glades Counties Health Departments.
It's important to remember that you can
get exposed to rabies in several ways, not
just from an animal bite. Rabies is transmit-
ted through exposure to the saliva and ner-
vous tissue from a rabid animal through a

bite, scratch, or contact with mucous mem-
branes such as the eyes, nose, or mouth.
Hendry and Glades County Health Depart-
ments work with Animal Control in the Cit-
ies of LaBelle, Clewiston and Moore Haven
in responding to incidents of animal bites.
They also test animals for rabies through the
Department of Health state laboratory, and
quarantines animals as necessary. Hendry
and Glades County Health Departments also
provides rabies vaccinations to victims of an-
imal bites, which is the only known effective
treatment for rabies prevention in humans.
The following are steps you can take to
protect yourself and your loved ones against
rabies:
Keep rabies vaccinations up to date for
all pets.
Spay or neuter your pets to help reduce
the number of unwanted pets that may not
be properly cared for or regularly vaccinat-
ed.
Do not handle, feed, or unintentionally
attract wild animals with open garbage cans
or litter.
Teach children never to handle unfa-

Register for storm shelter

Family members with
special needs are
encouraged to register early
In the event of a hurricane or other ca-
tastrophe, the Hendry County Emergency
Management departments will attempt to
provide special sheltering and transportation
for those who have chronic medical condi-
tions requiring special needs.
Special needs shelters are truly identified
as facilities of last refuge for those persons
in the community with health and medical
conditions.
The Hendry County Special Needs Shel-
ter (West Glades Schools) is defined as a
structure that has auxiliary power and is
capable of providing a safer refuge for in-
dividuals, and their caregivers, who require
health oversight.
Considering that the county's medical re-
sources are limited, it is strongly suggested
that you pursue primary evacuation plans
with family, friends, neighbors, church orga-
nizations, etc.
Speak with your physician and fam-
ily about your transportation and sheltering
needs.
Have your physician execute the neces-
sary pre-admission procedures well in ad-
vance of a known, pending disaster such as
a hurricane.
Again, talk to your family, friends, and

neighbors about providing you with evacu-
ation transportation.
If you live in a mobile home park or an
area with an established homeowners as-
sociation, inquire about your association's
disaster plan.
Also, if you have special needs that do not
require medical sheltering, speak with your
minister, or affiliate religious association, or
civic organization to see what types of evac-
uation sponsorship programs are available.
Please keep in mind that pets are not al-
lowed in the shelter, so make arrangements
for their well being in advance.
Should you need to attend the West
Glades Schools PSN Shelter, you are required
to register prior to shelter entry, and you are
required to bring a caregiver with you into
the shelter.
Registration forms for Hendry County
residents can be obtained from the Hendry
County Health Department and the Hendry
County Emergency Management Office.
Once your registration is received and
reviewed, you will receive notification as to
whether you qualify for the Special Needs
Shelter.
Should it be determined that your needs
do not warrant a Special Needs Shelter, you
will be notified of other shelters available in
your area in which you can seek refuge.
For more information, or if you would like
to have a registration form mailed to you,
please contact the Hendry County Emergen-
cy Management office at 863-674-5400.

Religious columns

No fire, no power, no rescue?
By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church
On April 14, 1912, signals of distress
pierced the dark night of the North Atlantic
in all directions from the ill-fated ship, Ti-
tanic.
The S.S. Californian, the nearest ship
to the scene of the accident, could have
reached the Titanic before it sank. But the
Californian never reached the place where
the Titanic sank.
At the investigation of the sinking of the
Titanic, Senator William Smith of Michigan
asked the commanding office why the Cali-
fornian didn't sail immediately to the scene
of the accident when the wireless reached
her.
The officer shifted uncomfortably, then
explained that they had feared icebergs,
so they were lying motionless in the water.
Even more importantly, he explained, they
had extinguished their fires and had no
steam up.
Such was the explanation given as to why
the Californian, which could have reached
the Titanic before it sank, never got there
and never rescued a single soul. No fire, no
power, no one rescued!
Could that be said about us that we have
the form of religion, but not its power? "But
you will receive power when the Holy Spirit
comes on you; and you will be my witnesses
in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth." (Actsl:8)
Sunday is Pentecost, the celebration of
the gift of God's outpouring of the Spirit to
the church and to us. Is this a gift we have
received? Are we filled with the Spirit?
The word "filled" was a word used of
the wind filling up a sail and carrying a ship
along in the water. To be filled with the spirit
is to allow the ship of your life to be guided
by the wind of the Holy spirit of God.
When we are filled with the Holy spirit,
we set the sail of our heart toward God and
let the wind of God, which is the Holy Spirit,
take our ship wherever He wants it to go.
This is how we get the fire and power in
our lives that God promises us the fire and

power to fulfill our calling as witnesses and
rescue the perishing.
Those gathered at Pentecost experienced
the power of God's spirit in their midst. Might
I suggest that we wait like those faithful Jews
in Jerusalem and that we gather expecting
the Spirit to come to us? Might I suggest that
we daily invite the Spirit of God to help us
embody the Fruits of the Spirit (love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith-
fulness, gentleness, self-control)?
The Spirit comes if we invite Him. If we
want to be Spirit filled, we must learn to pray
and we must learn to gather expectantly and
we must learn to invite.

Someone left you a fortune!
By Jackie Miller, Evangelist
First Christian Church
Yes, it's true! There was One who died
for your sake that you might inherit all the
riches of heaven for eternity. Galatians 1:4
says "Who gave Himself for our sins that
he might deliver us out of this present evil
world." I Peter 1:3-4 says "who according to
His great mercy begat us again unto a liv-
ing hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ
from the dead, unto an inheritance incor-
ruptible and undefiled, and that fadeth not
away, reserved in heaven for you."
The death of Jesus Christ, almost 2,000
years ago, gives you today the right of inheri-
tance, provided you fulfill the terms of the
will He left. This Fortune is free, and freely
given. Romans 8:32 says "He that spared not
his own Son but delivered Him up for us all,
how shall He not also with Him freely give
us all things."
Because of God's grace and God's love
this Fortune is freely given but you must
meet the terms of His will. The terms are:
1.Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts
16:31). 2.Repentance from all your sins
(Acts 17:30). 3.Confess Jesus Christ as your
Savior (Acts 8:37). 4.Baptism by immersion
in water, into Christ for the remission of
your sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts
2:38; 8:35-39 & Romans 6:3-4). 5.Continuing
steadfastly to live for Christ (Acts 2:42).
If you fail to accept this gift of eternal life

you have no one to blame but yourself for
"God is not willing that any should perish
but that all should come to repentance." If
you fail to accept God's Gift you must pay
the penalty of your own sin which is eternity
in hell with the devil and his angels.
This coming Sunday is one of the great
days on the Christian calendar. It is the Day
of Pentecost, the birthday of the church!
Read Acts 2 about the events of this day. It
was a day that the Gospel was first preached
as a fact, when people where first told what
to do to be saved, when the Great Commis-
sion began to be carried out, plus many
other firsts! Remember when Christ returns,
He is coming back for His Church (I Thes-
salonians 4:13-18.)

To Graduates: A wish for
"The road to Damascus"
By The Reverend Samuel S.
Thomas, Ph. D.
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
We don't hear much in the scriptures
about "going to school" but it is evident that
lots of learning took place in Biblical times.
Ways of preparing for life's call were differ-
ent in those times, but everyone had to do
some learning in order to live and take their
place in the world.
Disciples and apostles had to learn their
trades and crafts, the Lord appeared in the
temple "sitting among the teachers, listening
to them and asking them questions (Luke
2:49)."
They were amazed at His understanding
- he was a good student! Tradition would
have had Jesus go through the formal cere-
mony of reading the Law and being counted
as an adult member of the religious body
"...with full rights and privileges thereunto
appertaining."
Religions still hold to similar traditions;
for some it is "confirmation," for others
a time of baptism, for others some rite of
initiation, for all it is a recognition of a rite
of passage from "discipleship" to going out
and taking a new place in the world. Our
graduates are now sharing in that rite of

passage as society has mandated. They will
no doubt find out many new and exciting
things about the world they are about to en-
ter; challenges, frustrations, opportunities,
disappointments, going to new places and
learning new things.
While teaching, one student told me that
he was now considering a career in one of
my subject areas psychology. Apparently,
the course I gave opened doors and showed
him a new way of looking at life, of serving
others, of growing, a discipline he had only
heard of in the past but now is a potential for
fulfillment and career.
He had a "Road to Damascus" experi-
ence; with all of the reorientation and won-
derful possibilities in new ways not consid-
ered before. Saint Paul reoriented his life
after finding his true vocation; nothing at all
like his formation as a Pharisee; but more
wonderful and fulfilling, useful to God and
useful to all he met.
My wish is that you may have your "Road
to Damascus" experience; building on the
foundations you've been given and that are
represented in your graduation, but also
having new and exciting experiences to ex-
pand, grow, fulfill, and most of all to see
God's hand at work in it all. In my own life, I
envisioned being an engineer when I gradu-
ated from high school.
Perhaps God saw my place in a form of
"human engineering" and combined it with
curiosity always asking questions. My ex-
perience is that "if you ask questions, you'll
wind up getting back to God." Looking at
God's creation and God's people will lead to
seeing His image and finding His hand at
work in our lives and the lives of others.
Graduates, may you never cease to ask
questions, search, seek, explore, and grow
on the foundations now laid down in your
lives. You will find God in one form or an-
other as you do! Amen.

rons through 2006. While stationed in Vir-
ginia, Andria married James Dolan and was

Task Force.
From 2007-2010 she was the non com-
missioned officer in charge of Bombers Spe-
cial Mission A-10 Aircraft Flight and Supply

Force Base. Andria Dolan led a 34 person
team tasked with providing supply support
to over 640 fighter, bomber and special mis-
sion aircraft within 12 different weapon sys-
tems located at 38 main operating bases and

A ceremony honoring Andria J. Dolan
was held April 15 at Langley Air Force Base,
and she thanked her friends and family.
"I would not be the person I am today
without you molding my life when I was a
child and teenager," she said.

MHHS looks

for football

coach

The Moore Haven Terriers posted the job
of varsity football coach on April 16.
Athletic Director Janice Brown said Ja-
son Bond will not be the coach in the fall.
Bond will remain a teacher at Glades County
Schools until the end of the year. Coach
Vincent Lewis was named interim coach
and he will lead the team in an inter-squad
scrimmage on Saturday night, May 22, at
Terrier Field.
Moore Haven (4-6) hasn't reached the
post season in several seasons.
"We are looking for someone who will
continue to build the program. We have
been an improving team and we'd like to
continue that," Brown told the Okeechobee
News.
Applications for the job were accepted
thru May 14. The new coach could have a
teaching opportunity as there are positions
open to teach Business, Social Sciences,
Language Arts and Reading at the school.
Brown said she would begin interviews
soon and would like to have the new coach
hired in early June and on the job by the
middle of June.

Eagles donate to Project Graduation

By Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat

GLADES -- The Lakeport-Moore Haven
Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE) has donated
a $400 check to Project Graduation which
benefits seniors who graduate from Moore
Haven High School on June 4.
The FOE is known for its charity work in
the United States and Canada. It has over
one million members and people from all
walks of life can join. Locally, the Eagles
raise money for college scholarships and
disaster funds; and for those in need such
as people who have had a house fire. They
support and appreciate veterans, fire depart-
ments and law enforcement. When local
Eagles heard about Project Graduation, they
knew they could do fund raisers to help.
Project Graduation is an all-night celebra-
tion for seniors who graduate from Moore
Haven High School on June 4. It is funded
and organized by parents, family friends and
other volunteers who offer a drug free, and
alcohol free event for graduates. Accord-
ing to Felinda Langdale, teacher/volunteer,
the chaperoned party begins soon after
the graduation ceremony, and continues
throughout the night until the next day's
breakfast. Annually, fund raising events and
local businesses have contributed to funds;
and families of students plan the location
and activities. This year MHHS seniors will
be treated to an all-night expedition to
Boomers, which is a family game park.
Project Graduation is the community's
alternative to a night that can be filled with
harmful and hazardous activities often as-
sociated with high school graduation parties
and pranks. Young people can be given the
choice to have safe entertainment and reli-
able transportation on this important night.
According to Virginia Ratliff, Eagles Aux-
iliary, the local FOE raised funds through
50/50 raffles, dinners and donation jar. They

Bronson Bass, Lacy Green and Brooks Bass.
4-H is a practical, educational, communi-
ty program for all youth. It is the youth devel-
opment program for the Florida Cooperative
Extension of the University of Florida and its
Institute of Food and Animal Sciences. 4-H
offers a variety of curriculum for boys and
girls in cities, suburbs and rural communi-
ties.
Categories include large animal sciences
such as cattle, goats, horses and swine; or
small animal sciences such as poultry and
pet care. Plant sciences include gardening,
farming, botany, lawns and landscape. Envi-
ronmental sciences are varied, too, such as
forestry, beekeeping, aquariums, fisheries
and wildlife ecology. Clothing, construction,
finances, child development, and consumer
education are part of family sciences.
Health science, food preparation, food
preservation, and food safety are part of

4-H; as well as communication, visual arts,
media arts, cultural arts, leadership, citizen-
ship, aerospace, electronics, robotics and
mechanics. The subjects a member may
choose to study are quite extensive.
Volunteers are the backbone of 4-H youth
programs. Adults are always needed to be
leaders, trainers, donors, mentors and as-
sistants. A club can be large or small. Local
or county clubs are the foundation for the
program and as few as five youngsters with
an adult leader can get started with a little
guidance from the local county agriculture
extension agent.
The newly appointed agent was present
at the May 10 banquet. Tycee Prevatt was in-
troduced to members and leaders.Later, her
appointment was approved by the Glades
County Board of County Commissioners.
Ms. Prevatt is from the south DeSoto County
area. 4-H is one of her specialties.
