There are several behind-the-
scene roles that volunteers can
help with if they do not like the
limelight. Someone has to help
with wardrobe, music, props,
sound effects, makeup, conces-

better way to see what theater is
all about, than to corne by for a
performance of a special adapta-

GLADES/HENDRY -- The Fire-
house Cultural Center in LaBelle
has cornrunity actors that give
the locals a chance to laugh, think
deeply, and get out of the house
for a few hours. Joining and work-
ing in the cornrunity theater is
more fun than being a specta-
tor, according to sorne seasoned
harns; or perhaps veteran actors is
a better phrase.
Truthfully, it is the work of the
volunteers that keeps theater alive.
The Firehouse Cultural Center has
been a busy place for the perform-
ing arts for the last 17 years. It has
attracted Glades County volunteer
actors from Ortona and Muse,
from LaBelle, and Clewiston in
Hendry County, and from Alva and
Fort Myers in Lee County. Con-

Hope HealthCare Services has succeeded
in "bringing Hope close to home" for thou-
sands of residents of eastern Lee, Glades
and Hendry counties. Construction is now
complete on the Hope HealthCare Services
Center in Lehigh Acres, the only health care
center of its kind in the state of Florida.
More than 600 people attended a two-day
open house event at the Center, on March 30
and 31.
"The opening of the Center represents a
major landmark for Hope in enhancing the
care we offer to so many people in need," ac-
cording to Hope President and CEO Samira
K. Beckwith. "This is a gift of time for every-
one in the area -no more long hours driving
to other hospice houses and care facilities
for services or to visit loved ones."
Set to open in mid-April, the Center will
serve eastern Lee County, including Buck-
ingham, Alva, Gateway, Lehigh Acres and
Pelican Preserve, as well as Hendry and
Glades counties.
The 45,000 square-foot Center includes:
*24 individual care suites for hospice
patients
*Respite areas for loved ones of the pa-
tients
*An Adult Day Health Center, offering
Hope Select Care, a Program of All-inclusive
Care for the Elderly (PACE), where approxi-
mately 50 frail and elderly clients will receive
care and support each day
*A Community Education Center which
will offer, among other programs, education
for family caregivers
Bereavement counseling offices
Offices for home care teams and vol-
unteers, who serve hundreds of people
throughout the area
The Center will also serve as a hurricane

who cannot be placed in public shelters.
As an added benefit to the community, the
Center will receive certification for meeting
international standards of environmental
quality and energy efficiency.
Designed to meet the ongoing needs of
Florida's growing and changing population,
Beckwith described the Center as "the future
of health care."
"We are absolutely thrilled to be able to
serve the community in this unique way,"
Beckwith said. "We are deeply grateful to
everyone who has supported us in this im-
portant project.

over and over again. As the Easter morning angelic
visitors instructed the empty tomb witnesses, the
first work of resurrection faith is to remember. Re-
member Christ's words. Remember Christ's stories.

Friday sacrifice and the Easter morning miracle again
and again throughout our entire life.

Starfish Christians
By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church
When the earliest fishermen found a thriving
population of starfish munching big holes in the
mussel, clam, and oyster beds they were f. .. I... I
they simply backed up the greedy little starfish into
bits and tossed them back into the sea.
Big mistake. Before they new it, these early fish-
er men were up to their hips in the slow moving
little suckers. One of the first lessons learned in early
aquaculture was "Don't cut up the starfish!"
Whack one starfish in two and what do you get?
Two starfish! Hack one starfish into five chunks and
you get five starfish. All a starfish needs to regenerate
a whole new creature is one arm and a smidgen of
the central disk of its body. A starfish can "re-mem-
ber" itself. It can form a completely new, whole star-
fish out of a small start.
Resurrection Christians are like starfish. It's after
Easter, but as long as we take with us the defining
miracle of an empty tomb, we can "re-member" the
body of Christ anywhere, anytime, in every age, no
matter how dismembered they may become. The
new incarnations of Christ's body might not have
perfect symmetry. They might need to work on co-
...i~in.;....~,l all of their new parts. But as long as the
"re-membering" of the dismembered continues, the
body will keep growing.
Jesus' resurrection triumph over death was once-
and-for-all, but the role of the witnesses continues

Center brings 'hone close to home'

fleSurrection Editorial
By Jackie Miller, Evangelist
First Christian Church
1 read somewhere, "What would the Editor of
the Jerusalem Daily News have written following
the Resurrection of Jesus Christ?" The Editorial went
some like this:
"The startling event reported on these pages is
the main topic of conversation in the city today is al-
most unbelievable. Two comments are in order. First,
we should remember that our prophets in centuries
gone by have predicted our Messiah would rise from
the dead. You recall that our great king David said in
his sixteenth psalm, 'For thou wilt not leave my soul
in Sheol; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to
see corruption.
Since David did not escape corruption, these
words could not apply to him. Our scholars agree
that these words apply to the Messiah. Secondly, we
should remember that this Jesus on many occasions
spenly stated that he would rise the third day after
Our chief priest apparently were the only ones
who took his words seriously. Our religious lead-
ers urged the death of Jesus on the ground of blas-
phemy -that he had said he was equal to God. It
hardly seems likely that Jehovah would honor a
blasphemer by allowing him to rise from the dead.
And there have been too many witnesses to doubt
his resurrection.

conducting "Quit Smoking Now" classes
-each consisting of six free smoking cessa-
tion sessions for the public.
Now, Hendry Regional is in a position to
do even more. The Florida Department of
Health (Bureau of Tobacco Prevention) has
recently awarded approximately $800,000 to
the hospital.
Marilyn Leeds, Executive Director of the
Lake Okeechobee Rural Health Network
(LORHN), was instrumental in helping
the hospital to receive this smoking cessa-

tion grant from the Florida Department of
Health. After discussing the possibilities
with Craig Cudworth (who at that time was
the hospital CEO), last year, Marilyn took it
upon herself to document the needs of the
county and write the proposal. It paid off,
when, less than three months later, Hendry
Regional Medical Center became the proud
recipient of this fantastic opportunity.
Hendry Regional Medical Center will now
begin working diligently with the services of
a Grant Manager, Supervisor of Cessation
Services, Cessation Specialist, and Program
Coordinator to fulfill the conditions and
scope of work, as specified by the grant.
The hospital will focus on:
*Employees -Promoting the smoke-
free campus through incentive programs,
tobacco-free policies, orientation, commu-
nications, training and health benefits.
*Patients -Providing education and re-

sources for addressing tobacco use.
*Visitors -Respectfully enforcing the
tobacco-free policy.
*General Public Informing and educat-
ing the community of all available free smok-
ing cessation/tobacco-free services and ma-
terial such as nicotine replacement therapy,
based on eligibility (patches gum, etc).
*Community Collaboration -Partnering
with other organizations such as the Ever-
glades Area Health Education Center, Hen-
dry County Health Department, LORHN to
reach and educate the target population.
Hendry Regional Medical Center is very
excited about the opportunity to have re-
sources available for another means of im-
proving the health and well-being of Hendry
and Glades County residents. As the plans
unfold, the hospital will continue to keep
you informed of upcoming programs and
services. Don't forget to register today for

The only logical conclusion is that Jesus is our
promised Messiah. To acknowledge this lowly Galile-
an as the Son of God and our Redeemer will be very
difficult to do. We looked for a conquering king. Yet
we can see in Jesus the fulfilment of the ceremonies
that we have observed in our temple for thousands
of years.
Some of our leaders have now publicly stated
that they are believers. Nicodemus, one of our hon-

ore sreurlers oiel raidedoin the burialuofblesnus. It 11 l
to admit the fact of the resurreciton, or if we admit
the fact and do not accept all that it implies."
Well, on the day of Pentecost, just 50 days after
the resurrection, Peter preached the gospel for the
first time. Three thousand responded by I1- **I- ~~;
of their sins and being baptized for remission of sins
to receive the Holy Spirit. Thus Christ's Church was
begun and continues on today!

Thomas, Ph. D.+
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
I was visiting someone one afternoon
who told me her daughters were coming to visit and
then began to cry. I asked her "Why are you crying?
This should be a happy time!" She answered "Be-
cause I will miss them so much when they leave

and disappointments; apparently which had seri-
ously affected her and caused her great difficulties.
The fear .. i .....~ ll...... coming to an end" paralyzed
her more than it does for most of us.
We'd always look forward to vacations, knowing

that theyrtoo eol cme to ane ,abut tha didn't

tion that doesn't come to an end" -and have been

doing things they've dreamed about in the past, and
now can share and accomplish with loved ones.
We've just celebrated Easter -and the message
is that there will come a time when we have those
special moments, and they don't come to an end!
Many people I know live doing what is required to be

park, and then back to work.
The days traded off are a worldly necessity; the
hope is for the time when we will one day find a
place to celebrate with loved ones, and where time
won't be limited. That day is ours too. The place is
called "Heaven" and we're God's adopted inheritors.

"after Easter" and "back to work," it's great to know
that Easter will go on; and will not end -the message

Him one day, and that day will not end.
We spend our days putting away for the vacation,

trip, getting the house ready to close for a few days or
weeks, and making sure that the mail is stopped and
the lawn is cut. Likewise, this life is a time to prepare
for the day when we will be away and to make our
plans to be ready for that life to come.
The things we do are what we can do to get
ready for our Easter, our resurrection to a new and
greater life -one that does not come to an end and
one where the message "Well done thou good and
faithful servant" will be ours to hear, too.

GLADES -- An Easter sunrise service was
held with a small congregation in a small
church, in a small town. They served bis-
cuits and gravy after the service. Several
hungry visitors stopped by and they were
fed, too. The Church of God of Prophecy in
Moore Haven at Fourth Street and Avenue E
has gotten a new coat of paint, and nern-
bers are in the process of planting flowering
shrubs. Soon, they plan to receive a donation
of caladiums from the Lake Placid area.
Pastor Frank Woodharn travels front'
Okeechobee on Sundays to deliver the
Lord's message as it is told in the Holy Bible.
He had not planned to take on the job as
pastor, but a few years ago the c hurch's Pas-
tor Webb and wife were killed in a head on
collision along a Georgia highway. So Pas-
tor Frank decided he must cornrute to the

Churhy chf Goa cotn Ptrlft store open on
Saturday, which is organized by nernber
Deanna Atkins and several devoted volun-
teers. Some days as many as 50 people may

show up to buy inexpensive clothes. Some-
times there are far fewer, like on rainy days.
Saturday, April 3 was quite busy though.
"We were loaded last Saturday, said Ms.
Atkins.
Clothes buyers donate whatever they can
to the charity, but if they are in dire need,
they do not have to pay for clothes. Local
people corne by for bargains, and sorne
:orne from as far away as Belle Glade and
Irnrokalee. Recently, the church offered a
second room in order to expand the thrift
service which includes food. Members are
also trying to spruce up the parsonage be-
hind the church.
Donations are needed in the form of wall
shelves, a freezer to preserve bread, and an
air conditioning unit for the main church
building. They plan to raise funds and will
accept donations of all kinds such as food,
irinparls. Mr t -c hrup nee lto dn wit

a district coordinator attends every meeting.
Debra Stallings is the coordinator for Glades.
She is familiar with the geographic area, and
the unique needs of a rural county. Local cit-

Some solutions to problem areas can be

Mr. Cato, the suspect, was taken to the
patrol car of GCSO Deputy Loper. Accord-
ing to an arrest report, Deputy Loper first
checked the rear compartment of the patrol
car, and then placed the suspect in the car.
At the time, Mr. Cato did not have any iden-
tification and stated his name as Deondra
Tator.
However, at the time of booking at the
jail, he gave a different name. Afterwards, he
identified himself as Travis Marquis Cato, 19,
of Belle Glade. Deputy Loper then returned
to the patrol car and noticed an odor, so he
rechecked the rear comprmen n on
bags of marijuana; and a bag containing
white powder.
Mr. Cato was charged with a weapons vi-
olation while engaged in a criminal offense,
grand theft of a firearm, possession of can-
nabis, possession of cannabis with intent to
distribute, obstruction by disguise, posses-
sion of narcotic equipment and possession
of cocaine. Bond was set at $52,000.
According to an arrest report, Bobby Lee
Brown was charged with reckless driving
and driving with a suspended license.

dispatch informed it was stolen out of Palm
Beach County in February.
According to an arrest report, Deputy Ok-
upski spoke to the driver, Bobby Lee Brown
30, who advised he was visiting in Washing-
ton Park; and that his front passenger, later
identified as Travis Marquis Cato, got out of
the car and walked up to some individuals.
Suddenly, Mr. Brown heard an argument
start. Mr. Brown explained that the front pas-
senger ran back to the car and told him to
drive off in a hurry.
According to the arrest re ort, Mr. Cato,
the suspect, opened the glove box and
closed it quickly. Mr. Brown, the driver, ex-
plained he did not know what the argument
was about, nor what Mr. Cato had with him
in the passenger area.
Deputy Okupski then talked to front pas-
senger, Mr. Cato, who was asked where he
was coming from, and the suspect com-
mented that he was not sure. Afterwards he
did not answer any more questions, accord-
ing to the arrest report.
