GLADES -- The Friends of
the Library know that much of
Glades County's early history was
not written down. At a public li-
brary meeting, March 15, they
have asked again for any journals,
photos, letters or other docu-
ments from local families or from
long-time winter residents. Items
of interest, which might be taken
for granted, could be packed in
storage such as family reunion
notations and photo albums'

ceet ng noes ,e us, recie
business ledgers.

Author of "Mirage"
VISits Clewiston

By Nena solan
Glades County Democrat

GLADES/HENDRY -- Cynthia
Barnett is a senior writer for
Florida Trend: The Magazine of
Florlda Business. Her 2007 non-
fiction work, "Mirage: Florida and
the Vanishing Water of the East-
ern U.S.", reveals a perspective
on the water enisis that has been
overlooked. According to Ms.
Barnett, fresh water conservation
awareness and efficient use de-
serves m..eattenion-.
'Americans could live very
well with a lot less water," she
said.
The author mentioned she
was pleased to be a guest speak-
er at Clewiston Museum, March
18, because she has roots in rural

southwest Florida. She first lived
in Goodno, near LaBelle, and
has a fond memory of the water-
melon harvest. According to Ms.
Barnett, rural residents may have
a more practical view of water
usage; especially when it is abun-
dant or scarce.

'Americans could live very
well with alot less water."
Mr. Barnett, Writer

"Kids here grow up knowing
the value of water," she said.
People who live around the
big lake pay attention to the daily
report of the water levels in Lake
Okeechobee, unlike their urban
counterparts. Florida should have
been drought free with its former
9 million acres of wetlands. More
than 100 years of drainage and ex-
cessive pumping of groundwater

has caused the state to see com-
petition for water, and conflict
among fresh water consumers.
Ms. Barnett commented in the
1800's it appeared that the east-
ern United States would always
be wet. In 1876, John Wesley
Powell, explorer-geologist and
civil war veteran, believed that the
eastern states would never have
to use irrigation like the arid west.
There was plenty of water in Flor-
ida, but it was not used wisely. In
2007, the southeast went through
the worst drought in 100 years.
In the past, large scale infra-
structure projects such as damns
and reservoirs have been the
norm for fresh water usage and
storage. Cynthia Barnett's re-
search reveals that today's big wa-
ter projects have had unexpected
consequences. The Tampa Bay
reservoir, built in 2005 and cost-
ing approximately $140 million,

GLADES -- Valarie L. James is
the new Tobacco Prevention Co-
ordinator for Hendry/Glades Coun-
ties Health Department. Tobacco
Prevention is part of the Healthy
People-Healthy Families program.
Ms. James leads the Glades County
Tobacco Free Partnership meetings
and is the adult coordinator for
Students Working Against Tobacco
Tey partnership met, March 19,
at the Moore Haven High School
library and discussed proposed
goals such as restricting or limit-
ing indoor and outdoor advertis-
ing signs, limiting the number of
new tobacco retailers within a
geographic area, implementing
tobacco controlled multi-family
dwellings and prohibiting the sale
of candy flavored cigarettes.
Of special concern was the re-
sult of recent student norm surveys.
Statistics show that a previous sur-
vey taken in August 2009 reflects
that 73 percent of local students do
not smoke cigarettes; however the
latest survey shows that 63 percent
do not smoke cigarettes. That is a
loss of 11 percent. The surveys and
norm statistics will be studied by
survey administrators.
For over 100 years the tobacco
industry has had aggressive mar-
keting techniques to convince
people that tobacco use is socially
acceptable and in past decades

FWC Report
Springtime's arrival is ushering in excit-
ing happenings at the Florida Fish and Wild-
life Conservation Commission's Fisheating
Creek Wildlife Management Area in Glades
County.
The swallow-tailed kites are back from
South America, and the campground is get-
ting a facelift.

Campground renovations include con-
struction of a new camp store and visitor
check-in building, repairs to the bathhous-
es and a general spruce up.
During demolition and construction
of the camp store, traffic will be rerouted
through an interim visitor check-in.
Visitors just need to follow all signs and
instructions when entering and exiting the
campground.

Workers expect to complete the im-
provement project in June.
A new concessionaire, Fisheating Creek
Outpost, Inc., is operating at the camp-
ground.
The Outpost will continue to offer high
quality recreational experiences at the
campground and on the creek.
Look for a variety of new interpretive
tours and programs in the near future.

Presentation on Lykes-Duda ILC also on
agenda
16th United States Congressional District
Representative Torn Rooney will be the key-
note speaker at the Glades County Economic
Development Council's annual nernbership
dinner, slated for Monday, April 5, beginning
at 6 p.In. at the Doyle Conner Building in
Moore Haven.
Raised in Palm Beach Gardens, Congress-
man Rooney was elected in 2008 and serves
on the House Arrned Services and Judiciary
Corniittees. A graduate of the University of
Florida, with a juris doctorate from the 11ni-
versity of Miarni School of Law, Congress-
man Rooney worked as an assistant Attor-
ney General under then Attorney General
Charlie Crist, following an eight year-stint
with the 11.S. Arrny, first serving as a special
assistant 11.S. Attorney with the JAG Corps
at Ft. Hood, then teaching constitutional and
criminal law at West Point. More recently,
the Congressman was in private practice
with a Stuart law firrn before running for
Congress.
The freshman Congressman is expected
to give EDC nernbers his views on ongoing

issues in Washington and how they are likely
to affect Florida. The Congressman has said
he supports working in a bipartisan manner
to find real solutions to get Americans back
to work. He has called for putting a stop to
over-burdensorne federal regulations, job-
killing tax increases and empowering small
business with necessary capital to reinvest
and hire more workers and freezing domes-
tic discretionary non-defense spending.
"Job creation must corne from private
industry, not by further expanding govern-
inent programs. We must tear down self-ini-
posed government obstacles to economic
growth," Congressman Rooney said. "Only
irnrediate and permanent tax relief for
working families, small businesses and fan-
ily farms will help incentivize businesses to
start hiring again."
Also on the agenda for the council's an-
nual nernbership meeting is an update on
the Lykes-Duda integrated intermodal logis-
tics center proposed to be built near Moore
Haven.
According to Glades County Economic
Development Council Executive Director
Tracy Whirls, an integrated, intermodal lo-

gistics center is a facility where products
are not only transloaded from rail to truck
for distribution and warehousing, but also
incorporates manufacturing and assembly
of products before they are shipped else-
where, either to markets in Florida, the 11.S.
or abroad.
Lykes and Duda continue to have very
promising negotiations with potential de-
velopers and tenants for the proposed ILC,
while awaiting the results of a broad stake-
holder driven freight mobility study corniis-
sioned by FDOT and the Florida Chamber of
Cornrerce Foundation.
Build out of the proposed Glades ILC is
likely to take 20-30 years, but the first phase
which will employ 300-500 people, is expect'
ed to be operational in a couple of years, the
EDC director said.
In addition to Lykes and A Duda and
Sons, sponsors include Wright Construction
Seacoast National Bank, Gulf Citrus Grow-
ers Association, Waste Management, Florida
Power and Light, Glades Electric Coopera-
tive, LaBelle Plumbing, River Forest Yachting
Center, First Bank, Suncoast RHIO, Cornris-

vehicle theft in progress in the area of River-
side Drive and Avenue L in Moore Haven.
Deputy Blackowski contacted the resi-

The truck owner described the boys as age
seven or younger and they were wearing t-
shirts, underpants, and no shoes.
According to the truck owner, the older
boy left; however the younger boy told
where he lived and the truck owner took
hirn to the mother's borne.
The truck owner cornrented that the
mother came to his residence and told hirn
that the boys got out and that she had boards
over the windows.
Deputy Errneri Inade contact with the
boys' mother who was at horne with the
younger boy who had been returned. Ac-
cording to the arrest report, the deputy no-
ticed the mother apparently did not know
the boys had left horne, and that she made
no effort to locate the older boy. The mother

The GCSO deputies and several citizens
canvassed the neighborhood in order to lo-
cate the older boy. He was found inside a
vehicle in the parking lot of the Eagles orga-
nization meeting hall at First Street and Av-
enue J. The boy was not injured and Deputy
Errneri took hirn horne where he made con-
tact with the mother. According to the arrest
report, she had still not attempted to locate

TheTe arrest report mentions this is the fifth
incident of this type with these children, and
four previous incidents have been docu-
Inented. The mother of the boys was placed
under arrest for failure to provide proper
care and supervision to her children. Bond
was set at $10,000.
According to Florida Statutes, the "ne-
glect of a child" means a caregiver's failure
or ornission to provide a child with the care,
supervision and services necessary to main-
tain the child's physical and mental health;
including, but not limited to food, clothing,
shelter, supervision, medicine and medical
services that a prudent person would con-
sider essential for the well being of a child.
The incident took place across the street
from a steep river bank.
According to the arrest report the chil-
dren were turned over to the father.

They say that pride is the mother of the
vices. It is the reason that angels fell.
Recently, I was invited to contribute to
several charity dessert auctions along with
some very talented bakers.
I joined these culinary experts in helping
to raise money to support everything from
missions, to youth ministry, to our local mu-
seum.
In each of these events, at least one of
these talented bakers had a kitchen disas-
ter. I applaud them for putting pride aside
and bringing their dishes anyway. They truly
humbled themselves.
And like those who get lifted up by hum-
bling themselves before the Lord (James

Before she left the house to drop off the
cake and head for work, Alice woke her

When the daughter arrived at the sale
she found that the cake had already been
sold. She grabbed her cell phone and called
Alice. Alice was horrified.
The next day, Alice attended a luncheon
at the home of a friend of a friend. Alice
didn't really want to go because the host-
ess was a snob who more than once had
looked down her nose at the fact that Alice
was a single parent and not from one of the
founding families of the community, but she
couldn't think of a believable excuse to stay
home.
Alice felt the blood drain from her body
when she saw the dessert come out after the
meal. It was her cake.
Alice started to rush to tell her hostess
all about it, but before she could get to her
feet, the Mayor's wife said, "What a beauti-
ful cake!"
Alice, who was still stunned, sat back
down when she heard the hostess say,
"Thank you, I baked it myself." Alice just
smiled and kept quiet.
We smile, too, but the author of Proverbs
was right. Pride does go before destruction
and a haughty spirit before a fall.(16:18)

A blessed inheritance; the
gift to us at Easter
By The Reverend Samuel S.
Thomas, Ph. D.+
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
One mother, when her husband died
told me of her children coming to her, each'
asking for an ornament that their father had
worn during his life.
They didn't ask for money or property, or
what was going to become of the posses-
sions that he had; only a simple ornament
worth a few dollars
It was his, and stood for their home, day
by day, a sign of their lives together and
something each wanted to share with his

Easter is about an empty tomb. What is
celebrated is that death was not the end for
Jesus; His followers w Ild go on to live with

That was THE gift, the inheritance, the
treasure to be passed forward for all of the
generations to come.
The empty tomb is the proof that His life
was not ended, but changed and because of
it, our lives will not be ended but changed
too. Amidst all of the celebration and fan-
fare, the gift of life for us is at the bottom
of it all.
The Easter story is about abundant life
given to each of us by the death that was not
really an end but a new beginning.
With all of our problems, disappoint-
ments, set-backs, losses, tragedies, hard-
ships, complaints in this life and things hu-
man beings suffer; there is that gift of life to
come; when what we do to each other or
to ourselves, or what has happened through
nobody's fault, will all be offered up -as the
Lord Himself offered it up on Good Friday.
The offering was not without a blessing;
that blessing is Easter.
With it all came the gift of eternal life in
Heaven; why Easter is the special gift to be
passed on and sought by those who are a
part of the family-God's family.
And there is more than enough for every-
one!

Big "O" Bassmasters
Ten year old Austin Wyatt Edwards fished his first tournament with Mike
Woodham as a club member of the Big "O" Bassmasters Club. This was
the first tournament of the year where ten to sixteen year olds could fish
the Club as a Co-Angler member. Mike said, "Even though Austin slept and
ate over half of the tournament, he still managed to come in Fourth place on
the Co-Angler side. (First place with the Juniors in the Club). This has been
a big change for our club and the experience of fishing with a child is very
rewarding, while they are learning from you, they are also reminding you to
not forget the basics of fishing. The excitement and determination in a young
persons eyes make it a great experience for you and also a pleasure."

Glades County Democrat 13

April 1, 2010

Now there is a glut of strawberries and farm-
ers have plowed them under because they
cannot get enough money for them.
Perhaps the second largest inefficient use
of water in Florida is keeping lawns green. It
is done purely for looks and lacks beneficial
merit.
Ms. Barnett commented Floridians
should look to Australia and Israel as exam-
ples of regions that have lessened the threat
of devastating water shortages with the use
of smart and efficient water usage. Australia
has reduced its per capital use of water by
one-half, and Australian utility companies
have not had to spend money on new facili-
ties.
Cynthia Barnett applauded Clewiston's
reverse osmosis plant, which is similar to a
desalination plant. It is more effective than
big water projects because it is smaller and
practical. She believes small scale technol-
ogy and water conservation on a local level
will go a long way to alleviating the water
crunch. She told the audience that eco-
nomic prosperity does not have to include
greater water usage.

has been riddled with cracks and it will cost
almost as much to repair it. It will have to be
drained dry for two years while it is repaired.
Also, a large scale desalination plant in Tam-
pa Bay has failed to produce the supply of
fresh water needed for the population.
The author of "Mirage" commented fresh
water sustainability should be part of the
green movement in power and technology.
Of the $787 billion in today's stimulus funds,
only $6 billion was earmarked for water
projects; and of that only 20 percent was
for water conservation and efficient usage.
Millions of dollars have been spent in legal
fees as the result of conflicts among water
users, yet there are no new plans for water
conservation.
Antiquated agriculture methods have
continued with inefficient water usage.
Cynthia Barnett mentioned during this win-
ter's prolonged freezing temperatures, agni-
businesses pumped billions of gallons of
groundwater on vegetable crops causing
sinkhole damage to highways and homes.

it was advertised as a safe product. Many
adult tobacco users became addicted when
they were adolescents. Before the 1960's,
tobacco industry ads portrayed smoking as
sophisticated, safe and patriotic.
Snuff, dip, chew, or smokeless tobacco
is also dangerous to youth, according to
officials; and it is more socially acceptable
in rural areas where people have access to
outdoor recreation. Surveys show that teen-
age girls would prefer that their boyfriendS
stop using smokeless tobacco. StatisticS
show that residents of Glades County have
a higher use of tobacco productS.
Tobacco Free Partnership leaders in-
vite community members, organizations,
churches, and local government agencies
to join and plan for the year's upcoming
program. New input is greatly appreciated.

Mary Booher, librarian.
The public library has regular meetings
and special Food For Thought programs on
Friday, which feature presentations frorn
local and regional guests speakers. Many of
the presentations focus on the way of life
from the Old Florida frontier days to early
settlement of Moore Haven, county corniu-
nities and pioneer businesses.
The Friends of the Library also learned
that the organization needs to sell 17 more
green books to break even. Green book is
the nickname for "Glades County History"
book which is sold for $15 at the public li-
brary.
Over $200 was gained at the recent an-

saddles the little library with additional pa-
