The elerk's office received are-

Musharraf surprises staff
Yasir Khan said that former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf would not
take no for an answer. The former military man insisted on paying for his
food, after Mr. Khan offered to let him eat for free. "No, no, no, I have to pay,"
he told the Clewiston Inn owner. Khan's business partner, Floyd Salkey, at

By Pat Dobbins
The teen years often cause stress for
teens and parents. Parents can't understand
how their well behaved children morphed
into moody teenagers demanding a driver's
license. It's interesting to know that teen-
agers say that parents are the most impor-
tant influence when it comes to drugs and
alcohol. Try to connect with your teen and
build a trusting relationship with them. Help
your teen pursue their interests and develop
their abilities. Take a walk or go for a drive
with your teen. When there's not much eye
contact, they won't feel like they are under a
microscope.
Because a teen's brain isn't completely
mature, they have a terrible time with facial
expressions. (You may feel surprised, but
they may think you're angry.) Add that to a
teen's tendency to act on impulse, be over-
reactive and have limited emotional control,
and you've got a recipe for major communi-

cation problems.
Another fact: Your teen may act up around
you because there's hardly any risk in it. No
matter how horrible your teen may act, they
know that you won't ditch them (though
their friends probably would). Teens are
testing their limits with you because they
feel safe with you. Think of it as a compli-
ment.
According to the website www.drugfree.
org, it works like this: You listen without in-
terrupting (no matter what) and then sum
up what you heard for your teen to confirm.
In the end, you get clear information about
their problem and they feel understood.
Once your teen has had their
say, you might start with:
It seems like you're feeling...
I hear you say you're feeling...
I wonder if you're feeling...
Am I right that you're feeling...
Then describe the emotions you

*Encourage your teen to be involved in
community events
*Attend and actively support your teen's
school activities
Attend parent-teacher meetings
Talk with your teen about school and
their activities on a regular basis
*Help them with homework assign-
ments or offer to get them a tutor
Parental involvement is essential for teen
success. Never give up on your teen. Let
your teens see that you believe in them.
Have open and honest discussions with
your teen. Don't worry about who's right or
wrong -listen carefully to your teen and
their responses will guide you and help you
to connect with them. Parents~ when it
comes to your teens and alcohol, tobacco,
drugs, or any other harmful substance or
behavior-- be clear, be firm, be consistent~
Be the wall!

saw:
*It sounds to me like you're feeling hurt
and angry. Is that true?
*I hear you saying that you're over-
whelmed. Am I right?
Or, use a figure of speech if that
works better:
*It seems like you're at end of your rope.
Is that right?
*Are you feeling like that situation is out
of control?
How can you get more involved in your
teen's life? Parental involvement leads to
higher achieving teenagers. Here are some
things that parents can do to develop teen
success.
*Talk with your teen, try not to talk "at"
them.

Belle Glade, FL -At first glance, the Cardi-
ac Rehab facility at Lakeside Medical Center
looks like any other exercise facility. Weight
racks rest under a mirror on one wall, peo-
ple walk on treadmills and exchange small
talk, while others pedal dutifully on station-
ary bicycles. But this place is not designed
just for fitness.
"Many people think cardiac rehab is just
exercise, but it's so much more than that,"
said Karen Schutzer, RN, MS, Manager of
Cardiac Rehab and Wellness at Lakeside
Medical Center in Belle Glade.
Cardiac rehabilitation -also known as
cardiac rehab -- is a comprehensive lifestyle
behavior approach to dealing with coronary
artery disease. Through a medically-super-
vised program of exercise, nutrition coun-
seling, and education, heart patients try to
stabilize, slow or even reverse the progres-
sion of cardiovascular disease. At Lakeside
Medical Center, Karen works with patients
who may have undergone a life-altering di-
agnosis or event, including bypass surgery,
stent placement, heart valve surgery, heart-
lung surgery, chronic angina, and heart at-
tack. Her job is to counsel and educate her
patients on specific actions they can take to

build stronger cardiovascular systems.
"I'm not afraid to be a little more aggres-
sive, if the situation allows," said Karen. "If
you walk three miles an hour today, then
let's see if we can move it up next time. I try
to move the patient as much as I can."
Karen also plays the role of trusted advi-
sor, as many patients feel a loss of control
after their procedure.
"I do a lot of teaching. I try to talk to them
after every session to encourage them about
the changes they need to make," said Karen.
"We are trying to rebuild their life, so they
have to try to stop smoking and lose weight.
It's a process, and it takes a while."
The typical cardiac rehab program takes
place in three phases. The first occurs just
after surgery, when hospital staff starts walk-
ing the patient. Teaching with both the pa-
tient and family starts in this phase.
The second phase is the outpatient work
after the procedure, to establish a docu-
mented program for recovery. This phase is
where Karen starts her work.
Phase three allows the patient more in-
dependence, but supervision is still neces-
sary. While Karen is able to work with her
patients one-on-one two days a week, she

encourages them to exercise on days they're
not with her.
"Some patients come in with bad atti-
tudes about exercise. But it should be fun,"
she said.
Karen begins each session by monitor-
ing blood pressure, heart rate and blood
sugar levels, which she reports back to the
patient's physician. Average blood pressure,
weight and change in personality over time
are all factors to consider in the patient's
progress. Exercise can even have an effect
on some medications patients may be tak-
ing.
"Sometimes, if they get into a new life-
style and stick with it, they are able to have
their doctor reduce their blood pressure
medications," she said.
Jane Thompson, a volunteer at Lakeside
Medical Center, started the Cardiac Rehab
program to address her high blood pressure
after retiring from her work as a school-
teacher. She knew she needed to exercise,
but needed help getting started. Karen
helped her learn to use the exercise equip-
ment and gave her tips on how to eat right.
The encouragement to focus on her overall
health has reaped benefits for Jane.

"I keep trying to push a little more, add a
little more, trying to build up from where I
started," said Jane.
The camaraderie that patients share in
the facility's group setting helps enhance
the recovery process. For patients without
family or supportive friends, isolation can be
devastating, especially as they grapple with a
serious diagnosis. While Karen can provide
medical information and tools for recovery,
the benefit gained from the encouragement
of others who may be walking through a
similar situation can't be measured.
Cardiac Rehabilitation, one of the hospi-
tal's outpatient services, empowers patients
to make much-needed lifestyle changes
that pave the way for healing and a heart-
healthy future. "The Cardiac Rehab facility is
one area where Lakeside Medical Center is
improving the health of our community in
a real and tangible way," said Brian P. Gib-
bons, Jr., Hospital Administrator. "With all
of her patients, Ms. Schutzer provides in-
spiration and the tools they need to achieve
happier, healthier lives."

Mr. Phillip Cosby leads the Moore Haven FFA
Chapter.
Throughout the week we were graced
with the presence of our 2010 Chalo Nitka
Royalty. Chalo Nitka Queen Kendra Murphy
and Princess Devyn Arnold presented all
winners with ribbons and belt buckles.
On Thursday night Gator Sapp welcomed
everyone to the Livestock Auction and Kend-
ra Murphy followed leading everyone in the
Pledge of Allegiance and Prayer. Janet Storey
of the Glades County Cattlemen's Associa-
tion awarded Gracie Goodwin with a $400
check and Kendra Murphy with $200 for
their Home Grown Grand and Home Grown
Reserve Grand Champions. Janet also pre-
sented plaques to Lykes Brothers Inc. the
breeder of both home grown steers. Mr. Joe
Collins and Mr. Harvey Sapp accepted the
plaques on Lykes Bros behalf.
The Exhibitor's hard work paid off as
auctioneer Brian Trimble auctioned off their
livestock to the highest bidders. The sale
total was $126,836.50. All of the exhibitors,
and Glades County Youth Livestock would
like to thank all of the very generous buyers.
Listed below are the sale results.

Bronson Arena was a very popular place
this week. The weather was pretty cold but
the family and friends that came to support
the exhibitors did not seem to mind too
much as they enjoyed the nice new bleach-
ers on the north side of the arena. The Dairy
show started the week off on Monday, March

anaro~u Tr f ra Sh wepk Ra boc Lawoagedr
opened with Prayer and led the Pledge of Al-
legiance to begin our evening.
There were 12 exhibitors displaying 19
animals. These animals were classed ac-
cording to age. The Judge for the evening
was Josh Churchwell from Gainesville. He
awarded all of the entries with blue ribbons.
The Jr. Grand Champion was awarded to
Teale Humphries with her Brown Swiss, "Di-
vine". Teale Humphries also took Jr. Reserve
Grand Champion with her Brown Swiss,
"Bumblebee." Kelsey Abern won Sr. Grand
Champion with "Snickers", a Holstein, and
Teale Humphnies took the honor of Sr. Re-
serve Grand Champion with another Brown
Swiss named "Dolar." Jr. Showmanship was
won by Olivia Everett, and Sr. Showmanship
was awarded to Kelsey Abern. The Dairy Ex-
hibitors are members of the "Cows "R" Us"
4H club led by Terri Smith and the Moore
Haven FFA Chapter led by Phillip Cosby.
On Tuesday night March 2, the Swine
Show began by Warner Ward opening with
Prayer and leading the Pledge of Allegiance.
The swine were classed according to their
weights, and there were 7 classes ranging
from Light Weight to Extra Super Heavy
Weight. There were 26 entries, including 1
swine for the 4-H Chapter raised and exhib-
ited by Tanner Mathis. Mr. Kenneth Arnold of
Okeechobee was the judge for the evening.
He awarded all of the 26 exhibitors with blue
ribbons for their great looking swine entries.
Tanner Mathis was awarded Grand Cham-
pion Swine with his 267-pound Yorkshire X.
Darcie McRoy was awarded Reserve Grand
Champion for her Yorkshire X weighing in at
262 pounds. Jr. Showmanship was won by
Lacy Cline, and Dray Adkins Ward received
Sr. Showmanship. The exhibitors are mem-
bers of the 4H Club "Rooters" led by Buddy
& Betty Kay Garvey, and the Moore Haven
FFA led by Phillip Cosby.
One of the cutest events of the week
was the Pee Wee Show, which was held on
Wednesday, and Thursday night just prior
to the Steer Show and Livestock Auction.
The Pee Wee exhibitors sported new "Little
Rascals" T- Shirts designed by their 4-H club
leader Celest Dotson. Of the 16 exhibitors

GLADES -- Friends of the Library heard
recent news about funding at a meeting ,
March 15, The Florida Senate and House ap-
propriations cornrittee has chosen to stop
all funding for Flonida's State Aid to Public
Libraries program. According to the Florida
Library Association (FLA), this devastating
decision may result in sorne Florida library

branches closing or will seriously hurt a li-
brary's ability to serve its patrons. It may
harrn libraries in rural cornrunities the
most because they depend heavily on the
program. The state aid program has served

The FLA asks Floridians to notify their lo-
cal representatives by going to www.flsen-

Lake Okeechobee communities now have their own Boy Scout district. From left
to right are Jo Ann Nicholson-Bronson Pack 952 Committee Chairman, Spon-
sored by VFW Post 9528 in Buckhead Ridge, Glades County; Carl Fox, Okeecho-
bee County, district executive Big Lake District and Ray Worley, Chairman Big
Lake District of the Gulf Stream Council Boy Scouts of America. The Big Lake
District has planned an event for April 31-May 1 in Lakeport.

here, too.
"For us out here, in our new District,
we have taken for granted the things that
are important. Today we must refresh our
memories and dare to dream a better life
for all our kids. One that empowers our kids
to make a choice to take care of other kids,
our elderly and their environment. We must
look at our values as a product that we are
obligated to share with the coastal youth

to see gipe f wht or tral reiget h
to offer on the news or at a rodeo. It is time
to teach being proud of our Rural Heritage. It
is grounds for quality and sustainable tourist
and economic regional development; one
that will have a long range rewarding impact
on our communities," said Mr. Worley.
There is local support among residents
for the Boy Scouts of America. In April 2009,
Troop 8463, Cape Coral, set out on a canoe
trip down the Caloosahatchee River. They
started at the Moore Haven Navigation Lock
and immediately had steering problems due
to strong winds. They were only able to pad-
dle a short distance and had to stop on the
bank of the river, and scramble up to a dock
belonging to Billie and Verda Proctor on
River Road. The Proctors invited 18 scouts
to spend the night on their front lawn, cook
outdoors and do some fishing. A day later,
the scouts were able to resume their trip
down the river to the Ortona Campground
at the Ortona Navigation Lock.
Did you know that 57 percent of United
States astronauts are involved in scout-
ing? In 2008, over one million volunteers
provided leadership to scouting programs.
Nearly three million young people provided

community service for food collection and
distribution, conservation projects, military
support and appreciation, food serving at
shelters and community beautification.
Ray Worley will be assisted by Carl Fox of
Okeechobee County, executive for Big Lake
District; and Jo Ann Bronson, veteran chair-
man for Cub Pack 952 in Buckhead Ridge,
Glades County. Mr. Worley can be contact-
ed at 863-447-1114. An event in Lakeport,
Glades County, is being organized for April
31-May1.
Thanks goes to Paul Beck, Lakeport resi-
dent, for suggesting a story about the new
Big Lake District of Boy Scouts of America.
More information about local scouting will
be found in upcoming articles.

was fund raising. Funds that were collected
mostly benefited other populations because
there was no local district. This will no lon-
ger be a problem for leaders, donators and
volunteers who join the new Big Lake Dis-
trict.
Counties around Lake Okeechobee have
a lot to offer children who are scouts. Glades,
Hendry, Okeechobee and western Palm
Beach Counties have immediate access to
the section of Florida Scenic Trails called
LOST, or Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail.
The trail follows the Herbert Hoover levee,
which circumnavigates the entire lake. The
Okeechobee is a unique inland freshwater
sea, and the largest freshwater lake in the
southeastern United States.
Wildlife management areas, storm wa-
ter treatment areas, Flonida Trail heads, a
freshwater coastline, Seminole communi-
ties, working cattle ranches, and archaeo-
logical sites are available for kids to explore
around the entire lake. Three major rivers
of south Florida can be explored here. The
giant Kissimmee River ends its journey into
the big lake, and the headwaters for the Ca-
loosahatchee and St. Lucie Rivers are found
