County economic expansion

Bob Levy, President of RECO
Realtors continues activity in
leasing and sales activity at
the Sutton/Chin Development
fronting on US 27 (Enterprise
zone) south of Moore Haven,
Florida.
The 20 acre parcel has been
attracting buyers and tenants
expressing interest in short
term and longer leases as well.
With the current unsettled
economic conditions and the
shortage of financing prevailing
at this time, some commercial
and industrial users are prefer-
ring leasing as an alternative.
This option presents entre-
preneurs an opportunity to ob-

tain properties with locations
supporting their distribution
and business objectives with
more reasonable cash outlays
as a method of establishing or
expanding their business. Such
companies as De Mott Auc-
tions, Glades Electric Utilities
and United Drilling have leased
parcels in the past year.
The Moore Haven and
Glades County areas are be-
coming more attractive due to
its' location to serve the central
and Southern Florida markets.
Parcels up to grade, from 1
acre and up can be configured
with user requirements for in-
gress and egress established so

that the properties comply with
their needs as well as local zon-
ing guidelines.
Extensive development
of Moore Haven commercial
properties, the plans for a large
Inland Port a full service Ma-
rina, plus plans for the Miami
International Airport overflow
terminal and support airfield
in the immediate area coupled
with the County's "Pro- Devel-
opment" posture, bodes well
for the future of this commu-
nity.

New lake channel markers

By Eric Kopp
INI Florida
Thanks to the foresight of
Glades County Sheriff Stuart
Whiddon, anglers and boaters
on Lake Okeechobee are now
finding it easier to locate chan-
nels within Glades County.
A project to replace seven
channel markers destroyed by
Hurricane Wilma on Oct. 24,
2005, was completed lastweek.
Those channels are: Pearce Ca-
nal, Indian Prairie Canal, Dyess
Ditch, Harney Pond, Fisheating
Creek, Moore Haven Canal and
Cochran's Pass.
Following the storm, Sher-
iff Whiddon was aware of the
missing channel markers and

became concerned about the
possible safety hazard created
by their absence. He then, along
with the help of the Glades
County Board of County Com-
missioners and Glades County
Emergency Management, con-
tacted the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA)
and requested financial sup-
port with the project.
Although the project was
approved, it could not be com-
pleted until Wednesday, Feb.
25, 2009, due to low water lev-
els.
The total cost of the project
was $54,357. Ofthatcost, FEMA
paid 37,500 and Glades County
paid $16,857.

After Tropical Storm Fay
drenched the area in August of
2008, the water level rose con-
siderably and Southeast Gen-
eral Contracting could now get
on the lake with their 20-foot x
40-foot barge to set the mark-
ers.
According to Don Duncan,
a spokesman for the Palm
City company, the barge and
its 5-ton crane was unloaded
in the Harney Pond Canal and
it took about a week for them
to mount the lights and set the
12-inch x 30-foot oversized tele-
phone polls.
Mr. Duncan said the barge

inland port

Glades County EDC
The Glades County Econom-
ic Development Council, Inc. is
working on a grass roots effort
with Glades and Moore Haven
public officials, the Florida
Heartland Rural Economic De-
velopment Initiative (FHREDI),
state legislators, EDC members,
regional planners, state agen-
cies, and other folks in the re
gion to site an inland port in the
center of the FHREDI region.
Glades County has an inland
port site located just north west
of the City of Moore Haven that
is ideally located on the South
Central Florida Express rail,
U.S. 27, and U.S. 78.
An inland port is an inter-
modal logistics center that
provides for the opportunity to
move large transport contain-
ers from rail to road and road
to rail. These containers will
arrive at the inland port from
the north, the west, the east,
and the south either by truck
or rail.
The origin of the containers
will be from out of the state,
within the state, from airports,
or from the ports along the
coast.
In addition, the inland port
provides for the opportunity to
generate light manufacturing
and distribution centers near it
and within the region around
it.
Inland ports must be cen-
trally located to key consumer
markets and have efficient ac-
cess to freight facilities (both
rail and road).
According to EDC director
Tracy Whirls, an inland port, in
the right location:
Will be a much needed
south Florida infrastructure im-
provement for facilitating the
movement of containers within
the entire region including both
the southwest and southeast
Florida consumer markets
Will help connect five plus
seaports and three internation-
al airports
Will utilize existing trans-
portation infrastructure as ef-
ficiently as possible with the
least amount of improvements
to rail and roads required in
early phases to reduce costs
Will improve efficient utili-

zation of rail and reduce semi-
truck vehicle miles traveled
throughout south Florida (es-
pecially the coastal congestion
on 1-95, the Turnpike, and 1-75)
Will free up east coast rail
for urban passengers
Will diversify the Flori-
da, South Florida, Southwest
Florida and Heartland regional
economies
Will provide a basis for a
sustainable and well-diversified
south Florida regional economy
going forward
"In addition to the inland
port functioning as a much
needed piece of infrastructure
for south Florida, it will also
function, as conceived by the
Port of Palm Beach, to facili-
tate and increase international
trade in Florida as an interna-
tional trade processing center,"
Ms. Whirls said. "It will help to
expand the South Florida trans-
portation and logistics industry,
by making it cheaper, faster,
more efficient and secure for
companies to move goods into,
out of and through various Flor-
ida markets and ports."
Currently there are many
sites being considered for the
inland port, including several
in Palm Beach County, which
have drawn opposition from
environmental groups due to
their proximity to or being with-
in the proposed Everglades res-
toration project flow way, one
at Hendry County's Airglades
Airport and one at the Glades
Moore Haven site.
The Moore Haven inland
port site is in the center of the
existing workforce of 100,000
in the FHREDI Heartland re-
gion.
The Moore Haven site is
within half an hour's drive time
to all of the unincorporated
communities in Glades County,
as well as Clewiston and La
Belle in Hendry County, and
within 45 minutes drive time of
Lake Placid, Okeechobee and
Belle Glade.
"This is critical," the EDC
director said, "because if you
move the location from the
center of the region, it becomes
too far to commute for many
of the FHREDI region towns.

the project was finished last week. The markers were set on
the lake at Pearce Canal, Indian Prairie Canal, Dyess Ditch,
Harney Pond Canal, Fisheating Creek, Moore Haven Canal

Two lake navigation

locks to close

Okeechobee, FL In re-
sponse to continuing drier-than-
normal weather conditions, the
South Florida Water Manage-
ment District (SFWMD) is set
to close two navigation locks
on the western shore of Lake
Okeechobee to all boat traffic.
The affected locks are:
The S-131 navigation lock at
Lakeport is expected to close
March 3.
The S-127 navigation lock at
Buckhead Ridge is anticipated
to close when the lake level hits
12.50 NGVD.
Currently, the forecast calls
for continuing dry weather, with
little to no significant rainfall pre-
dicted to recharge local drainage

basins along the rim canals that
flow into Lake Okeechobee.
During the 2006-2007
drought, the District took similar
action at the request of resi-
dents after low water levels
rendered the canals impassible
and led to them becoming over-
grown with vegetation. The lock
closures helped preserve the re-
maining water in the canals. The
locks will remain closed until
rainfall recharges the lake.
For more information about
the navigation locks, water lev-
els or District projects, please
contact the SFWMD Okeecho-
bee Service Center at (863) 462-
5260 or (800) 250-4200.

Don't let your drain cause you pain!

Think about what goes down
your drain. If you have a sep-
tic system, everything that goes
down your drain ends up in your
septic tank. Well don't let that
drain cause you pain! If you do
not maintain your septic system
properly, you are sure to have
the pain and aggravation from a
failed system, not to mention a
hefty chunk out of your wallet!
Failed septic systems are expen-
sive to repair or replace. A septic
system contains a large water-
tight tank that takes in, and par-
tially treats the waste water that
runs out of your home plumb-
ing system. Just after the septic
tank there should be a drain field
that distributes the waste water
into the soil for final treatment
and disposal. If you have trouble
with your septic system, you may
notice clogging drains, your sink
may back up when you flush the
toilet, or you may notice a stinky
smell similar to rotten eggs. Keep
in mind that the well for your
drinking water should be at least

75 feet away from your septic sys-
tem. You don't want to drink your
toilet water do you? If you start
having trouble, septic tanks can
be cleaned by a company which
is permitted by the county health
department. Septic tanks should
be cleaned by licensed and ex-
perienced professionals who will
pump out your septic tank con-
tents into a tank truck and then
dispose of the wastewater in an
approved, sanitary manner. Here
are some tips to help prevent sep-
tic system failure:
Don't pour any type of cook-
ing oils or grease down your
drain.
*Never flush paper towels,
newspapers, rags or sticks (This
could clog your drains and fill up
your septic tank rather quickly)
*Don't over-use household
cleaning products in the show
ers, sinks, and tubs.
Never flush any kind of pesti-
cides into your system (you need
the live bacteria in the septic tank

to help break down the waste)
*Have your septic system in-
spected and pumped at least ev
ery three years by a licensed sep-
tic tank contractor or plumber.
*Never allow vehicles (cars,
trucks, etc) to drive across or park
on the drainfield (Protect it from
being crushed)
Remember that your septic
system is not a trash can. If you

have any further questions on
septic systems, please contact the
Environmental Health office at
the Hendry County Health Depart-
ment 863-674-4041 or the Glades
County Health Department 863-
946-0212.

trator r the Hendry and Glades

as asthma and other chronic re-
spiratory or lung conditions.
How to protect your family
from smoke:
*Pay attention to local news
coverage or health warnings re-
lated to smoke.
*Use common sense when
outside conditions are smoky.
Avoid prolonged outdoor activi-
ties. It is especially important to
limit time spent outdoors for chil-
dren and persons with existing
medical conditions.

*Stay indoors and run your
air conditioner, if you have one.
Keep the fresh air intake closed
and the filter clean to prevent
bringing additional smoke inside.
For best results, run the air condi-
tioning with re-circulated air.
Help keep particle levels low
er inside. When smoke levels are
high, try to avoid using anything
that burns, such as wood fire-
places, gas logs, gas stoves and
even candles. Do not vacuum,
which stirs up particles already
inside your home. Also do not
smoke tobacco.
*Follow your doctor's advice
about taking medicines and fol-
lowing your asthma management
plan if you have asthma or other
lung disease. Call your doctor if
your symptoms worsen.

World champion boxer visits Pahokee gym

Submitted photo/Mike LeStrange
World Champion women's boxer Laura "Lady Ram" Ramsey, visited Pahokee PAL boxers last
week. The boxer told the boys about her personal story, and even sparred for a few rounds
with some of the athletes.

By Steven Tillings
Last Friday evening, top mid-
dleweight female boxer Laura

(Lady Ram) Ramsey came to Pa-
hokee to visit the PAL youth box-
ing program.
Boxing teams from the sher-

iff's Belle Glade PAL, and Palm
Beach Gardens PAL came to the
Pahokee boxing gym located at
603 Bacom Point Road to see the

top female boxer.
The Pahokee gym's coach
deputy sheriff Mike LeStrange in-
troduced Ms. Ramsey to all the
adults and youth in attendance.
The professional boxer was
greeted with a standing ovation
as she entered the facility.
Ramsey came with gifts for the
youth boxers with her life story,
and how she rose to become a
boxing champion.
Ramsey told the kids that her
life was saved through boxing.
Prior to becoming a boxer,
Ramsey was obese, and as a re-
sult of her excessive weight, her
body functions shut down, mak-
ing her extremely ill.
She reluctantly tried the box-
ing training routine and found
herself losing weight. She subse-
quently became one of the best
athletes in the sport. Lilia Ali, who
is the former heavyweight cham-
pion's daughter, was signed to
box Ramsey, however, Ali backed
out of the match for an unknown
reason.
After speaking to the 30
youngsters, Ramsey watched and
evaluated their sparring sessions
as coaches Willie Wiggens from
Belle Glade's team, Afshin Mot-
edaelny from Palm Beach Gar-
dens, and LeStrange assigned the
sparring matches.

Visitors to that Far, Distant Shore

By Butch Wilson
Clewiston Museum
The high bows of the ocean-
going dugouts rose and then
plunged downward like sharp
daggers though the cresting
waves.
The long, thick bodied crafts
sank deep into the dark, treacher-
ous troughs of the waves, before
rising once again to meet the
mountainous walls of green wa-
ter that toyed with each dugout.
Men, burnt by a thousand suns,
showed no fear as they gazed
across the stormy tempest with
experienced eyes that were intent
on an invisible path, which would
lead them to a distant shore.
Their dugouts followed a true
course across the Florida Straits,
traveling unerringly like a flock of
migratory birds to a fixed point
on the hidden horizon.
The mariners paddled tire-
lessly the entire day, steering their
dugouts through contrary cur-
rents and squalls.
Hours of endless toil finally
rewarded the mariners with tiny
distant clouds that formed on the
horizon.
The growing clouds gradually
materialized into "Firma Tierra."
It was a land of lush, tropical
forest, green sloping hills and
great flocks of parrots that paint-
ed the sky in a barrage of rainbow
colors.
A distant shore called Isla de
Cotorras, or Isle of Parrots, an is-
land we know today as Cuba.
Could primitive Cypress dug-
outs survive such a "Tall Tale"
journey across the Florida Straits
- a place where treacherous wa-
ters from an oceanic river called
the Gulf Stream, collides with the
prevailing winds in a constant
duel of wills?
Is there historical proof that
such a craft existed among the
Native American Nations in south
Florida?
It is time to take 'A Walk in The
Past" and read some interesting,
historical tidbits written by a long
forgotten Spanish soldier.
The Spanish established three
forts in south Florida during the

ORTONA Dolores Ann "Dolly"
Dowhen, 79, beloved wife of Travis
W. Dowhen for 59 years, died Feb.
20, 2009, in her home of 32 years, in
"Turkey Creek", Ortona.
Formerly of Milwaukee, Dolores is
also survived by son, Dennis; grand-
children, Kris, Travis R., Jeffrey; and
four sisters and brothers all residents
of the Milwaukee area.

1500s, to protect their shipping
interest and citizens from other
European powers and Indians.
Pedro Menendez, the first ap-
pointed Spanish governor of
Florida, was initially successful
in establishing friendly, political
relations with the Indian Nations
that lived around the graphically
dispersed, Spanish forts in south
Florida.
However, this peace was short
lived because of Spanish harsh-
ness and rivalry among the Indian
Nations that bred contempt, hate
and wars.
The warring Indians made it
futile for the Spaniards to stay,
so they eventually abandoned all
three forts.
The departing Spaniards left
in their wake, vengeful Indian na-
tions that were quick to repay an
old score.
The Indians vented a cold ruth-
lessness on any Spanish person
who had the misfortune to wreck
on their coast.
An unknown number of men,
women and children became vic-
tims to the Indian hostilities that
lasted from 1571 to 1612.
Most victims were immediate-
ly killed, but some were enslaved
and reserved for a later fateful
day.
In 1612, the Spanish Florida
governor, Fernandez de Olivera,
sent a messenger to request a
truce with the Calusa Indians.
The Calusa Casique, who
dominated the Calusa Nation and
other neighboring Indians, re-
sponded to the message, asking
for peace and friendship with the
Spaniards.
It is strange that the Calusa
would want peace and friendship
with the Spaniards, since some
of the Calusas probably remem-
bered the encroaching forts and
harsh treatment that the Span-
iards had meted out to them and
other Indian Nations.
The Calusa Casique's motives
were probably purely political
because the Spanish had success-
fully established forts, settlements
and missions in Central and North
Florida.

Kenneth Eugene Bishop
PALM BEACH GARDENS Ken-
neth Eugene Bishop, age 76, of Palm
Beach Gardens, formerly of Moore
Haven, passed away Feb. 25, 2009 in
West Palm Beach,
Arrangements by Akin-Davis Fu-
neral Home LaBelle.
Robert Percy
Silcox Sr., 81
ATHENS, GA Robert Percy Sil-
cox Sr., passed away in his home,
on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, after a
brief illness. He was 81.
Born in Venus, Mr. Silcox had
made his home in Athens for over
40 years. He served in the United
States Navy and attended Officers
School at Georgia Tech. Mr. Silcox
began his railroad career in Sebring,
with the Atlantic Coast Line Rail-
road. Over 40 years later, he retired
as Roadmaster of the Abbeville-At-
lanta Branch of CSX Transportation.

There were lurking fears or
phobia that other Indian tribes
living in Central and North Florida
would make alliances with the
Spaniards and become a power-
ful, threatening force to the Calu-
sa Indian Nation.
The Calusa Casique was par-
tially correct in his assumptions.
However, the threat would come
much latter and from Indian Na-
tions living further north.
No doubt the governor's rea-
sons for peace were also strictly
political because he wanted the
looting, killing and enslavement
of Spanish citizens to end.
Governor Olivera sent an ex-
pedition under the command
of Juan Rodriguez de Cortaya to
confirm the messenger's report
that the Calusa Casique really
wanted peace.
Cortaya set out with a launch
down the west coast of Florida
with one pilot (navigator) and 20
soldiers for Tampa Bay.
The expedition made its way
to Tampa Bay without mishap
and then southward to Charlotte
Harbor, where the Calusa Ca-
sique lived.
Cortaya reported in his journal
the numerous Indian villages and
Indians he encountered at Tampa
Bay and present day Charlotte
Harbor.
His report is interesting be-
cause the south Florida Indian
Nations were still very populous.
They had not yet been weak-
ened by European diseases that
would one day sweep across the
Florida Peninsula like the Black
Plague, bringing death and de-
struction to the Florida Indian Na-
tions.
When Cortaya entered Char-
lotte Harbor, he was greeted by
sixty canoes and a great number
of unarmed male Indians who
brought many women with them,
which was a sign of peace.
The Casique arrived in a dug-
out that carried 40 people, greet-
ing Coraya and his crew in a
friendly manner.
The Calusa Casique gave the
Spaniards gold presents and a Ne-
gro from Havana, Cuba, who had

Mr. Silcox touched and molded the
lives of the many men who were
lucky enough to work beside him
during his career. His family and an-
cestors are proud to have had over
350 years of building, maintaining,
and operating various railroads
around the Southeast.
Mr. Silcox was preceded in death
by his parents, Annie and Percy Sil-
cox; a brother, Bill Silcox; and a sis-
ter, Betty Martin.
Survivors include his loving wife of
58 years, Louise Silcox; daughter,
Lou A. (John) Sharp of Watkinsville;
son, Tate (Theresa) Silcox of Winter-
ville; and granddaughters, Annie
Sharp (Atlanta) and Sarah Sharp
(Watkinsville); as well as numerous
cousins. He is also survived by his
faithful "little dog", Tinker.
Mr. Silcox was a kind, devoted
man who spent his life loving his
family, his Lord, the Railroad, the
Chicago Cubs and his little dog. He
was loved and respected by many

been blown off course in a dug-
out by a storm to their shores.
The Casique told Coraya there
were other Spanish castaways
and that he would return them to
the Spaniards.
The Calusa Cacique promised
Coraya that the Calusa nation
would not harm shipwrecked
persons in the future.
Cortaya's journal mentioned a
dugout with a large, load capac-
ity of 40 people. A dugout of this
size could probably safely travel
across the Florida Straits to Cuba
or the Bahamas Islands.
Further evidence for sea voy-
ages to and from Cuba are sub-
stantiated when Cortaya's journal
alludes to the Negro from Ha
vana, Cuba, who was blown off
course in his dugout by a storm
to the Calusa shores.
Another interesting Spanish
memoir states that Ponce De Leon
was cursed in Spanish by Florida
Indians in 1521 that had fled Cuba
to escape the Spanish cruelty.
We will probably never know
how far the South Florida Indians
and Caribbean Indians ventured
on their epic, oceanic voyages.
I would like to think that they
had the same vision and spirit
that all adventurous people have,
"To go where no man has gone
before."
There will be more "Tale Tales"
in next week's edition "A Walk in
The Past,"
when the Spanish return to
south Florida in the late 1600s.
I hope you have enjoyed this
story. Contact the Clewiston
Museum if you have questions,
artifacts, pictures, or a "Whale
of a Tale" that you would like to
share.
The Museum's hours are Mon-
day through Friday from 9 a.m.

and he will be missed by all who

cial thanks to Julia Frederick, for her

Questions regarding health and wildfires

S get CULTURIZED
Stig Rossen

What is the health threat
from wildfire smoke?
Smoke from wildfires is a mix-
ture of gases and fine particles
from burning trees and other
plant materials. Smoke can hurt
your eyes, irritate your respiratory
system and worsen chronic heart
and lung diseases. Fortunately,
most persons who are exposed
to thick smoke will not have
health problems. How much and
how long you are exposed to the
smoke, as well as your age and
degree of susceptibility play a role
in determining whether or not
someone will experience smoke-
related problems. If you are ex-
periencing serious medical prob-
lems for any reason, seek medical
treatment immediately.
How can I tell if the smoke
is affecting my family or me?
*Smoke can cause coughing,
scratchy throat, irritated sinuses,
shortness of breath, chest pain,
headaches, stinging eyes and
runny nose.
*If you have heart or lung dis-
ease, smoke might make your
symptoms worse.
*People who have heart dis-
ease might experience chest
pain, rapid heartbeat, shortness
of breath and fatigue.
*Smoke may worsen symp-
toms for people who have pre-
existing respiratory conditions,
such as respiratory allergies,
asthma and chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD) in the
following ways:

*Inability to breathe normally;
Cough with or without mu-
cus;
Chest discomfort;
*Wheezing and shortness of
breath;
When smoke levels are high
enough, even healthy people may
experience some of these symp-
toms.
How can I protect myself
and my family from the harm-
ful effects of smoke?
Limit your exposure to the
smoke by:
*Staying indoors whenever
possible.
*Using air conditioners Using
mechanical air cleaners.
*Keeping windows closed
while driving in a vehicle.
Will I suffocate in my
house?
No. The most common call
for evacuation during a wildfire is
due to the direct threat of the fire,
not smoke. Leaving the area of
thick smoke may be an option for
those who are sensitive to smoke.
However, it is often difficult to
predict the duration, intensity and
direction of smoke, making this
an unattractive choice to many
people.
Should I wear a mask?
The Department of Health
does not recommend the wear-
ing of any masks or respirators at
this time.
Will a wet towel or ban-
dana provide any help?
The Department of Health

does not recommend using wet
towels or bandanas. Since wet
towels or bandanas may not be
sealed to the face and their capac-
ity to filter very small particles is
unknown, they will likely provide
little to no protection.
What should I do if I must
drive to work?
Individuals can reduce the
amount of smoke particles in their
vehicles by keeping the windows
closed. The car's ventilation sys-
tems typically remove a portion of
the particle coming in from out-
side. For best results, individuals
may want to use the "re-circulate
air" feature found in most cars,
which will help keep the particu-
late levels lower.
Do air-purifying machines
help remove smoke particles
inside buildings?
Some air cleaners may be ef-
fective at reducing indoor particle
levels, but most are not effective
at removing gases and odors and
also tend to be expensive. Hu-
midifiers or de-humidifiers are
not technically air cleaners and
will not significantly reduce the
amount of particles in the air dur-
ing a smoke event.
What should I do about
closing up my house when it
is so hot in there?
If you do not have an air condi-
tioner and if it is too warm to stay
inside with the windows closed,
seek alternative shelter.
If I have respiratory prob-
lems and can't reach my doc-

tor, where should I go?
If you have a medical emer-
gency, you should call 911 or go
the hospital emergency room im-
mediately.
What do I bring if I'm told
to evacuate my home?
If asked to evacuate your
home, be sure to bring your im-
portant family documents (birth
certificates, wills, insurance poli-
cies), valuables and your family
disaster supply kit. Your disaster
supply kit should contain enough
food, water and supplies to sus-
tain your family for at least three
days. Do not forget any medica-
tions or special items such as a
first aid kit. For additional infor-
mation on how to prepare your
family for disasters, review the
"Family Preparedness Guide" at
www.doh.state.fl.us/rwweb-
master/prepareenglish06.pdf. It is
extremely important for families
to create their own disaster plan
before a disaster strikes so they
are quickly able to determine
what valuables they may want
to bring, what items need to be
stored and how to preserve keep
sakes.
Where can I find informa-
tion about the air quality in
the area I live?
The Florida Department of En-
vironmental Protection provides
updated information on outdoor
air quality in Florida at http://
www.floridadep.org/air/airqual-
ity.htm.

Weather woes hamper sugar crop

Belle Glade Despite the
impacts from the lingering wa-
ter shortage and January freeze
event, the 2008-09 Sugar Cane
Growers Cooperative of Florida
harvest produced respectable re-
sults setting several records in the
processing facility including most
sugarcane ground per crop day
and lowest fuel oil usage during
the harvest season.
The 118-day 2008-09 harvest
commenced on October 27,
2008 with liquidation completed
on February 23, 2009. The 47
grower-members of Sugar Cane
Growers Cooperative of Florida
produced 2,555,577 tons of sug-

arcane grown on 59,527 acres in
Palm Beach County. This yielded
300,811 short tons raw value
(STRV) sugar and 16 million gal-
lons of blackstrap molasses. This
compares to last year's produc-
tion of 2,599,517 tons of cane pro-
ducing 300,157 STRV sugar and
16 million gallons of blackstrap
molasses. Sugar yields improved
this year at 11.53% compared to
last year's 11.3%, but below the
high of 11.73% achieved in 2003-
04.
Records included the highest
tons of sugarcane ground per
crop day; lowest fuel oil per ton of
cane; and highest quality of raw

sugar. The Cooperative saves over
$60 million or 700,000 barrels of
oil a year by using the fibrous por-
tion of the sugarcane stalk called
bagasse to fuel its bio-mass boil-
ers.
"The drought-stressed crop
from the past two seasons trans-
lates into lower tonnage in the
field than we normally would
have expected," said Coopera-
tive President and CEO George
H. Wedgworth. "Our growers, for
the most part, survived with mini-
mal damage from the January 21,
2009 widespread, hard freeze.
However, we expect to see ad-
ditional damage reflected in next

year's crop from the extended
water shortage and lost growth
from the freeze."
The Cooperative is made up of
47 grower-owners and employs
600 people during the harvest
season. The primary functions of
the Cooperative are the harvest-
ing, transporting and processing
of sugarcane and the sales of raw
sugar to American Sugar Refining
Inc., (ASR) that is co-owned by
the Cooperative and Florida Crys-
tals Corporation. Refined sugar
is then marketed nationwide
through Domino Foods, Inc.

What type of respiratory pro-
tection should I use?
Consult with your employer
or the agency with which you
are volunteering. The U.S. De-
partment of Labor, Occupational
Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) requires all employers to
establish respiratory protection
programs for their employees to
use when it is deemed necessary.
For additional information
about respiratory protection stan-
dards, visit www.osha.gov/SLTC/
respiratoryprotection/index.html
or call OSHA at 1-800-321-OSHA

pational Safety & Health (NIOSH)

Glades County student makes finalist for

National Merit Scholaship

Over 1.5 million students in
more than 21,000 high schools
entered the 2009 National Merit
Scholarship Program by taking
the 2007 Preliminary SAT/Na-
tional Merit Scholarship Qualify
ing Test. The 16,000 semifinalists
were the highest-scoring entrants
in each state and represent less
than 1 percent of each state's
high school seniors.
To be considered in the rig-
orous competition for National
Merit Scholarships, Semifinalists
must advance to the Finalist level
of the competition by meeting ad-
ditional standards and fulfilling
several requirements. These in-
clude having a record of very high
academic performance in college
preparatory course work, submit-
ting SAT scores that confirm the
PSAT/NMSQT performance, and
being fully endorsed and recom-
mended by a high school official.
As part of completing the detailed
scholarship application, each
Semifinalist writes a self-descrip-
tive essay and gives information
about extracurricular activities
and leadership positions. A school
official must provide a written
recommendation and charac-
terization of the Semifinalist, the
student's academic record, and
information about the school's
curricula and grading system. The
total file of information collected
about each Semifinalist is used in
the selection process. Finalists are
considered for one of 2,500 sin-

will be provided by corporations,
company foundations, and other
business organizations for Final-
ists who meet criteria specified
by the award sponsor. Some
corporate-sponsored scholar-
ships are one-time awards that
provide a single payment (gener-
ally between $2,500 and $5,000),
but most are renewable for up to

four years of college undergradu-
ate study.
Renewable awards are of two
types: those that specify a fixed
yearly stipend (between $1000
and $5000) that is the same for
every recipient of the sponsor's
scholarships, and those that pro-
vide variable stipends (ranging
form $500 to $10,000 per year)

that are individually determined,
taking into account college costs
and family financial circumstanc-
es.
We are very proud of Aaron

Those jobs, Ms. Whirls noted,
include direct jobs, not just in
initial construction, but trucking,
maintenance, warehousing, dis-
patch, management, parts, rail,
heavy equipment operators and
security.
Indirect jobs include business
opportunities to support shippers,
distributors, freight forwarders,
manufacturers, restaurants, fuel-
ing, retail and vocational training.
"Transportation logistics jobs are
full time, year round jobs." Ms.
Whirls said. "And that is what the
FHREDI region needs".
The Moore Haven site has
more direct frontage on the SCFX

port. Fishing and canoeing is done
near Palmdale at Fisheating Creek,
and a large fishing community is
found in Buckhead Ridge. Visitors
can also view yachts as they pass
through the Ortona Locks along
the Caloosahatchee River.
Later, on Sunday, explore Ga-

The Moore Haven site has

Even more importantly, the
land owners have vowed to make
the Moore Haven site the most
competitively priced site for the
inland port project.
"For an inland port project to

pany to fund, design, develop,
market, and operate the South
Florida Inland Port over time."
According to Ms. Whirls, the
location of the inland port must
be based on its economic and en-
vironmental feasibility.
"We are concerned that if
a decision is made to site the
project without thorough vetting
based on infrastructure required
and cost, providing maximum
economic stimulus and jobs for
as much of the FHREDI region
as possible, serving a consumer
market both on the west and east
coast, and environmental com-

will not come to Florida to fund,

The inland port concept is be-

and there are a limited amount
of companies that can fund, con-

By Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat

GLADES COUNTY -- On Feb.
26, about 2:19 a.m., Deputy
Sheriff S.R. Casserly, Sergeant T.
Nieves and Deputy Sheriff R. Ok-
upski responded to a domestic
dispute in eastern Glades Coun-
ty. According to an arrest report,
a female victim had called and
reported that her spouse was
threatening to kill her and that
she had locked herself in a bath-
room; and that there were sev-
eral firearms in the residence.
Upon arrival outside the resi-
dence, deputies could hear a
loud disturbance. Deputy Sheriff

Casserly announced "Sheriff's
Office" and they entered the
house. According to the arrest
report, after entering the resi-
dence, deputies realized that the
alleged suspect, Danny B. Mitch-
ell, 58, was unarmed and depu-
ties secured their firearms and
unholstered their tasers. Then
the suspect began to resist ver-
bal commands to place his arms
in the air.
Then the suspect retreated to
a bedroom and closed the door
behind him. Deputy Sheriffs Cas-
serly and Okupski immediately
opened the door and according
to an arrest report, the alleged
suspect, Mr. Mitchell, raised a

shotgun and pointed it at all law
units in the doorway. Deputies
deployed lasers and the suspect
was immobilized and secured in
handcuffs.
When the Mossberg 410 shot-
gun was retrieved, it was found
to be unloaded. Other firearms
were found on a couch in the liv-
ing room. The female occupant
was found in good health and as-
sisted by a victim's advocate.
Danny B. Mitchell was taken
to the county jail and charged
with aggravated assault and three
counts of aggravated assault on a
law enforcement officer.
