Three friends and I spent four days submerged in quilts and the historic district of Savannah last week. Its hard for me to express how much I like Savannah, lets just say it is one of my favorite vacation destinations. Being a history lover, it makes my heart happy to walk along the side walks and take in all the old buildings dating back to the 1800s. People cer tainly paid more attention to details back in those days than they do to day. The iron work in the city is just beautiful, as well as all the gorgeous hidden gardens that were just coming into bloom. When Savannah was laid out back in 1733, General James Oglethorpe drew street grids and planned 24 public squares. Today there are 22 squares still in existence. If you have visited Savannahs his toric downtown you will agree the squares make the city a special place. Each square boasts large twisted live oaks. These trees have been twisted like only coastal oaks are twisted so they appear to be giant bonsai. Several of the squares have young dogwoods, which were just bursting ture many, many mature azaleas that were also mostly in full bloom over the weekend. nah is the Lady Banks rose which blooms only once a year and we were low rose blooming in several places throughout the city. Needless to say late March might just be the very best time to visit Savannah for no other reason but to enjoy all the beautiful blooms. The temperature was nice and a little cool for the four days we were there, just right for lots of walking. We took several long walks, usually to some eating establishment or an other during the morning and in the evening. Speaking of food, we ate at the legendary Wilkes Dining Room, aka boarding house, and my, oh my it was just as good as ever. The fried chicken and Savannah red rice was to die for. I even splurged and chugged be still my heart, those ladies at the Wilkes sure can make some wonder ful sweet iced tea. We also dined at a restaurant called Cha Bella which is a farm to table es tablishment that was really good, but a little pricey. Several months ago we all bought into a package deal to attend the Quiltfest which was to be held in Savannah and with the package we got rooms, a quilt lesson from a pro fessional quilter and lots of lectures about quilting. Our package was put together by the Quiltfest managers and we were booked at the Double Tree in the Historic District near the waterfront. One of the most interesting things about the DoubleTree was that it is located next to the oldest black church in North America. The church was founded in 1778 when George Liele organized a small congregation of black baptists in Savannah, the church is called First African Baptist Church. For all you quilters out there the Quiltfest was great with lots of won derful, nationally recognized teach ers. The quilts that were displayed were award winning quilts from all over the country. Short of going to Paducah or Houston, I am not sure where the avid quilter could go to see this many show winning quilts. By the way, Mancuso Show Manage ment has already booked the conven tion center in Savannah for another Quiltfest next Spring. Just before traveling to Savannah we realized that the Savannah Inter national Trade and Convention Cen ter where the Quiltfest was to be held was across the Savannah River from the historic district where we were staying. Lucky for us, there is a free ferry service from the boat landing behind the gold domed city hall to the convention center. The trip takes 10 minutes or so and would be a fun boat ride for anyone visiting Savan nah. All and all we had a great time on our girls quilting getaway, we learned alot, ate alot, and came home happy, happy, happy. --Hummingbird cupcakes 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup sugar 2 large eggs, room temperature 1/2 cup butter, melted 2/3 cup crushed pineapple in juice 1 cup mashed ripe bananas 1/2 cup chopped pecans 1 teaspoon vanilla Preheat oven to 350 degrees. The replicas were donated by Murrels son, Franklin Watson, who inherited them after his fathers death in 2004. I had been searching for a way that my fathers creations could be preserved and shared with future generations, said Watson. When I learned of the Early Childhood Education program at the Museum, I thought the replicas could contribute to the classroom activities or to the Museums Farm Day event. Murrel Watson was a local Levy He and his wife of more than 50 years, Lillie Mae, lived their entire married lives in Levy County in Otter Creek, then Usher and lastly suddenly in 2001, Murrel needed something to keep his hands and mind busy, so he dusted off several of his stored carpentry tools and began to craft miniature replicas of houses from his childhood and carpentry experiences. Nighttime was the hardest part of coping with moms passing, so he would often get up and go out to work on the replicas in the middle of the night when he couldnt sleep, said Watson. The set, constructed over four Watson donates replicas to Tallahassee Museum of History and Natural Science style homes that Murrel built from memory, including his childhood home and barn, complete with a cane juice cooking vat chimney made from rocks he collected from his childhood home site located near Ellzey, Fla. The replicas were built so the roofs could be removed, revealing many and other miniature furnishings that were purchased from hobby shops in Gainesville. Through the wonderful generosity of the Watson family who donated miniatures of a farm similar to the Big Bend Farm here at the museum, the Big Bend Farm experience may now be put literally in the hands of the youngest learners at the museum, said Karen Gay, Museum Preschool Manager. The miniatures allow the children of our preschool to visit the farm while in the classroom, and allow them to experience the farm through dramatic play. The replicas will also be used in the Discovery Center in the years to come to allow for guests to gain an understanding of the architecture of the structures, as well as the attention to craftsmanship by their maker, of Education at the Museum. These miniatures provide a wonderful teaching opportunity that includes art, math, history and culture. We thank the Watson family for sharing their legacy with the Tallahassee Museum and with Big Bend community. Murrel Watson Children look at Murrel Watsons replicas of Old Florida homes that are now at the Tallahassee Museum of History and Natural Science. Remember how much you wanted to be picked for the team when you were a kid? I grew up with a cousin who was great at every sport. He could run faster and kick the ball farther than anyone on our playground. That usually meant he always got to be a captain no matter what we played. I wasnt jealous though. It actually worked out good for me, because when he was captain, I knew I would his team. Not because I was a great athlete, but because we were family, and he looked out for me. We all understand the importance of being chosen for the team, for the job, or by that special person we want to spend the rest of our life with. It makes us feel valuable. In Ephesians before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. Being chosen because of our abilities, our looks, or what we can bring to the table might temporarily make us feel important, but what happens when our abilities start to wane with age or illness and our looks are not what they used to be. What happens when we dont have so much to offer? God chose us for a and He has much to offer. Like my cousin picking me for the team, God doesnt choose us because we are the best, but because He is and we are valuable to Him. This verse tells us that He chose us to be holy. This word does not mean perfect or sinless. It means set apart for a relationship with God workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which He has prepared in advance for us to do. This is great news! Not only are we chosen, God has something prepared for all of us to do! He has a plan and matter what our abilities are. This means we dont have to spend the game sitting on the bench! The second part of this verse says that we are to be blameless in His sight. Doesnt that sound good, and yet impossible? Blameless in His sight is a reminder that our relationship with God comes only through Christ, who died for our sins and paid the price for them. He did that because we are valuable to Him, and He wants you and me on His team! Because your heart really does matter! Church News of the Cross will be in the church. Easter Sunday will be celebrated at Please come and join us for Easter Celebrations. Van visit By Brad Buck based tool worked well during its trial run to measure water consumption at farms in four Southern states, according to a study published this month. called water footprint of a farm. In the broader sense, water footprints account for the amount of water used to grow or create almost everything we eat, drink, wear or otherwise use. Researchers at UFs Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences introduced their WaterFootprint tool in the March issue of the journal Agricultural Systems after using it to calculate water consumption at farms in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Texas. The WaterFootprint is part of the AgroClimate system, developed by Clyde Fraisse, a UF associate professor of agricultural and biological engineering. AgroClimate is a web resource, aimed primarily at agricultural producers, that includes interactive tools and data for reducing agricultural risks. WaterFootprint, developed primarily by Daniel Dourte, a research associate in agricultural and biological engineering, estimates water use in crop production across the U.S. WaterFootprint looks at a farm in a gives you its water footprint, Dourte said. With UFs WaterFootprint system, users provide their location by ZIP code, the crop, planting and harvesting dates, yield, soil type, tillage and water management. The tool also retrieves historical weather data and uses it to estimate the blue and green water footprints of crop production, Dourte said. Water UF/IFAS measures farms water footprint footprints separate water use into green, which is rainfall; blue, from a freshwater resource; and gray, an accounting of water quality, after its been polluted. Water footprints can be viewed at the farm level or globally. For instance, if irrigation water is used to grow crops, it is essentially exported, Dourte said. Once products are shipped overseas, the water used to grow the commodity goes with it, and it may Dourte said. Thats a problem if the crop is grown in a region where water is scarce, he said. But theres often a tradeoff, he said. Global food trade saves billions of gallons of water each year, as food is exported from humid, temperate places to drier locales that would have used much more water to grow crops, Dourte said. The U.S. is a big agricultural producer. Products are exported and along with them, water goes to other countries, he said. For example, if youre growing soybeans, youre indirectly sending the water that was used to grow the crop. That amounts soybeans, Dourte said. In addition to soybeans, coffee beans and shirts, if made from cotton, consume lots of water from the growing process to processing water consumption resulting from evaporation and transpiration during crop growth, he said. But understanding the type of water resource being consumed, whether its from rainfall or irrigation, makes all the difference in assessing water resource sustainability. Fraisse and Oxana Uryasev, a UF research associate in agricultural and biological engineering. The WaterFootprint tool can help not just growers, but world water managers as well, he said. unique resource that could be used by resource managers and educators to consider water resource sustainability in the context of agricultural production, Dourte said. We usually think of water management locally and regionally. But when youre accounting for the water footprint of agricultural products, it allows you to see the global nature of that water. New year-round lawn and landscape irrigation measures went into effect on March 24 for homeowners within the Suwannee River Water Management Districts 15 county region. The measures limit irrigation to two days per week during Daylight Saving Time and once weekly during Standard Time, and designate irrigation should not occur between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Residents may irrigate based on their address. During Daylight Saving Time, residents with even numbered addresses may water on Thursday and Sunday; residents with odd numbered addresses or no addresses may water on Wednesday and Saturday; and nonresidential properties may water on Tuesday and Friday. During Eastern Standard Time, residents with even numbered addresses may water on Sunday; residents with odd numbered addresses or no addresses may water on Saturday; and nonresidential properties may water on Tuesday. An even numbered address means an address ending in the numbers 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 or letters A-M. An odd numbered address means an address the letters N-Z. The irrigation measures apply to residential landscaping; public, commercial, and industrial property; hotels and motels; and public medians. They also apply to those who receive water from utilities, private wells, or surface water. However, they do not apply to users of reclaimed water. Homeowners are also encouraged to irrigate only when necessary, to use Florida-Friendly Landscaping principles, and skip irrigation days when it rains. Florida in 2005, has led to $4 billion in lost revenue and industry-related year citrus industry. As some farmers turn to peaches, they want to know how long before Olmstead, assistant professor in horticultural sciences at UFs Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. through years 10-12, when the tree starts to decline in the South. This is good news, she said. It is typically seven years before you get a commercial crop on citrus and probably eight before you are Olmstead co-wrote a paper that created four-year peach orchard budgets and growing operation plans with former UF doctoral student Kim Morgan, now an assistant professor in agriculture and applied economics at Virginia Tech. Florida peaches go to market earlier than others around the nation, giving growers here a leg up on national competition, Olmstead said. Growers invest about $11,600 in third-year income of about $10,150 per acre, with $8,342 in grower costs, said. A 2011 Florida grower survey showed peaches grown on about 670 acres, according to the paper. Another 300 to 400 acres were added in 2012. Those acres are now producing about 4.5 million pounds per year, at an estimated value of $6 million, the paper says. While an assistant professor at Mississippi State University, Morgan interviewed 26 of the estimated 40 Florida peach growers and then created four-year budgets and operation plans for the growers. The growers had varying amounts of experience, from just having years experience, Olmstead said. UF/IFAS says peaches can be protable in Florida The budget plans included prices of pest sprays, tree costs, fuel, repairs and more. Morgan presented her paper last summer at the Proceedings of the Florida State Horticultural Society, and it is online at societys website, http://www.fcla.edu/fshs SRWMD Governing Board appointees Submitted Governor Rick Scott has announced the reappointment of Alphonas Alexander and Guy N.
