GCSO nabs 5 alleged burglars Hog raises over $21K for Lane By Carrie A. Mizell When her older sisters hog was too light for the fair, 12-year-old Alaina Brown stepped up and pledged to give all of the proceeds from the sale of her hog to Lane Langford. As of Monday, Charlie, Alainas 255-pound hog had generated $21,649.50 and bidding was not scheduled to close until Wednesday. Several weeks before the Suwannee River Fair, Alainas sister, Taylor Dean, 14, had announced plans to donate proceeds from the sale of her hog Louise to Lane, in an effort to help him with medical expenses, following a December car crash that left the Trenton High School athlete paralyzed. Unfortunately, Taylors hog did not meet the minimum weight requirements for entry into the fair. However, Alainas hog did make the show, therefore the Trenton Middle FFA member vowed to take up her sisters promise and give the proceeds from the sale of her animal to her cousin, Lane Langford. Taylor and Alaina never dreamed that the challenge they issued the community to join Team Lane and support their fundraising efforts would generate 2014 Suwannee River Fair generates $854,802.95 over $84 a pound for a hog. It was absolutely amazing, said Kiley Dean, Taylor and Alainas mother, recalling sale day. I cannot describe what happened yesterday. We are very blessed to live in the community that we live in. Gilchrist County residents pledged their support along with several contacts the family has in St. Lucie County to raise so much money for Lane Langford. My girls were just a tool that the good Lord used, Kiley Deen said. Dixie County residents also gave generously to help Cheyanne Hall, who pledged the proceeds from the sale of her animal to Heather Land. At press time, $21, 915 had been generated for the Old Town resident. Land was diagnosed with colon cancer and is now receiving treatment in Philadelphia. She and her husband, Jeff, have two sons. According to Marti Smith, fair secretary, total sales for the 2014 Suwannee River Fair were $854,802.95, which included the two donated hogs. Without those two animals, sales were at $811,238.45, which is still substantially more than the 2013 fair, which generated $731,690.96 in sales. On average, fat steers sold for $5.28 per pound, feeder steers sold for $4.51 per pound and swine averaged $4.95. The ol Southern favorites, azaleas, dogwoods and bridal wreath are lad en with blooms now. The phlox are starting to turn the roadsides pink all over the county. Isnt this the prettiest time of year to live here in our small quiet little cor ner of the world? Just this week, a friend mentioned had it right when she said, Man, have you seen those azaleas? With all the craziness in the world you just have to take a minute and stop and breath away this time of year. I wonder if God put them here for us to just pause and admire their beauty as a reminder of just how real He is. Dont you love springtime? The birds are singing, the smell of fresh tilled dirt is on your hands and pretty truly is a special time of year and yes we should all take a minute and just be still and thankful. When news happens, call the Gilchrist County Journal at 463-7135 Lowell Michael Lewis, Jr., 31, and Stacy Ann Bostic, 29, both of Alach ua, were married on March 15, 2014, by Reverend Mark Spradley, Pastor. Im a traditional girl caught like a deer in the headlights of an anything goes society. That fact was made clear to me recently, when I opened a wedding invitation and discovered that rather than a traditional gift registry, the couple was asking guests to go online and pay for honeymoon cruise excur sions, or just give them cash. the ladies in my bible study group when the topic came up the following Thursday night. Apparently were all a little old fashioned. I feel like I should preface this viewpoint with a bless their hearts or to each their own, recognizing that its 2014 and apparently any thing goes. But at the same time, I just have to say aloud, and in print, is it really okay to ask for cash, a spa treatment, or a snorkeling adventure on a wed ding invitation? Are there no bound aries anymore? I know, that I know, that I know, as southern baptists like to say, that my mama didnt raise me to ask for cash from family, friends and acquain tances. And certainly not on a printed invitation. Has good taste gone completely out the window? What happened to reg istering for Wedgewood, good sheets, and a toaster oven? And being grate ful for any and all gifts you received and sending a subsquent thank you note that you addressed yourself. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer to give a set of monogrammed tow els, or a nice cake stand with a hand written recipe for my MeMas pound cake this wedding season. Submitted Kristen Burke, a 2010 Bell High School graduate and now a University of Florida senior, has been awarded the Champion of Service Award for her commitment to service in the community and to Florida Alternative Breaks, a student organization on campus. Bell graduate receives the Champion of Service Award Kristen Burke is shown accepting a plaque from Florida Governor Rick Scott at the Florida State Capitol on March 18, as Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam and Kristen has demonstrated excellence in volunteerism, community service and social responsibility as she works to advocate for social change and empowers those around her to become active citizens. Her outstanding contribution to community service efforts is why she is being honored with this state-wide award. As education chair for Florida Alternative Breaks, Kristen greatly impacted both members and participants by placing education at the forefront of organizations mission. She took her position seriously, initiating the development of issue education for all 18 alternative break trips, as well as for the personal development of board members. She also developed curriculum and assignments for a new site leader training course. Previously, the focus of the trips was more on service and less on the issues behind the need for service, however due to Kristens dedication to advocating for an educational component in all aspects of Florida Alternative Breaks, site leaders now have a deeper understanding about the trip issues, value the educational aspects more, and have a greater awareness about what they will encounter during their service experience. She created the foundation for future Florida Alternative Breaks members, site leaders, and trip participants to delve deeper into community needs through her involvement, drive, and dedication as education chair. The Champion of Service Award was established in 2013 by Volunteer Florida to honor individuals and groups for their outstanding efforts in volunteerism and service. The award presentation is part of the Florida Cabinet meeting with Governor Scott and members of the Florida Cabinet and was held on March 18. Mossy Oaks 4-H Club had the opportunity to work the concession stand at the rodeo on Saturday, March 15. We would like to thank those that made this all possible: Mr. Bobby Crosby for giving us this chance. Ace Hardware in Trenton for donating the gas used for the grill we used to sell at the concession stand. Mr. Marvin Weaver for donating the ice. Without all of your help this would not of been possible. We are a large club with many teens that participate in the week-long camps offered through 4-H. It is very expensive to stay a week at Florida State University for 4-H Legislature, a week at the University of Florida for Congress and then the other camps that Mr. Decubellis puts on all summer for the kids. We are now able to help all our kids working the concession stand with these camps this summer! Thank you so very much! Appointed to the Alachua county court bench in 1993, Judge McDonald presided over county court matters until 2005, when she was elected as a circuit judge for a term beginning January, 2005. Prior to taking the bench, Judge McDonald worked as an assistant Public Defender in the Eighth Judicial Circuit in the juvenile division in 1983, and then as an assistant state attorney in the felony division in 1990. On her decision, Judge McDonald said While I am certainly looking forward to spending more time with my family and friends upon retirement, I have truly enjoyed the privilege of serving the community as a judge. Rotarians hear about solar power project Take a quick look and count how many keys are in your pocket or purse. Dont we take these funny looking little things for granted? That is, until the name of a key is synonymous with how important they can be: strategic, basic, central, major, and our keys. Now look at your keys and think about what they do for you. The job of a key is to give us access to something that is protected or limited only to designated people. If we have a key, we have been granted access to what that key protects. For example, my key ring includes a key to my car, husbands truck, and a safe deposit box. With each key, I have been granted access to all these places. I bring this up because I read something recently in scripture that stuck in my mind about keys. Isaiah 33:5-6 has this to say: The Lord is exalted, for He dwells on high; righteousness. He will be the sure foundation for your times, A rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; The fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure. In these verses, I see a list of coveted, protected items: a sure foundation for our times, a rich store of salvation, a rich store of wisdom, and a rich store of knowledge. Who doesnt want access to a sure foundation, especially in our times? Apart from Gods offer of a sure foundation, the best we can do is recall the good old days which had its own share of question that every religion attempts to answer and one we have already wrestled with or will eventually. Acts 16:30 records the jailer asking Paul and Silas the question What must I do to be saved? Countless people are still asking the same question every day. Access to this rich store is indeed priceless. The rich stores of wisdom and knowledge are worthy pursuits as well in order to be successful and live rich, full lives. We press our kids to read and learn voraciously in order to gain knowledge and become wise. Studies suggest those who continue learning later in life are less likely to lose brain function. In fact, there doesnt seem to be any downside to having access to a rich store of wisdom or knowledge, but we could be pounding on the door of these rich stores and still be denied access without the key. key to this foundation and these rich stores: the fear of the Lord. This awe; a recognition of His place and our place. Translated into our daily life, this would mean that we have a clear understanding of who God is and what we are. It also means when God speaks, we dont keep doing our own thing, shrug our shoulders and say, Oh well, God understands me. It means we listen up with fear and trembling. That fear gives us the KEY, the access to these destinations, and is available to whosoever will Kite Flying Day at Mt. Please realize, the failure to pay your property taxes will result in a lien being placed on your property and additional charges and interest will be applied to your tax bill. Property taxes become delinquent April 1st of each year. (Additional monies will be applicable on this date) If your current taxes remain unpaid by May 1st, payment to our office must be made by money order, cashiers check or cash. (NO PERSONAL CHECKS ACCEPTED DURING THE MONTH OF MAY FOR 2013 TAXES) On or before June 1st, all remaining unpaid taxes will be sold at auction (VIA THE INTERNET) as a tax certificate and a lien recorded on your property. When a certificate is sold on your property, the holder of the certificate is actually paying your taxes and drawing interest on their investment. A certificate is valid for seven (7) years, but the holder of the tax certificate can start a Tax Deed procedure against the property after two (2) years, if the property still remains unpaid by the land owner, these procedures could result in the loss of your property. PLEASE REMEMBER: IF YOU ARE THE CURRENT PROPERTY OWNER, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE YOUR PROPERTY TAXES ARE PAID. (CHAPTER 197.122 F.S.) For your convenience our office has a website that you can check periodically as to the status of your property. www.gilchristtaxcollector.com you may also email any questions to ttrail@gilchrist.fl.us To avoid additional charges and interest, and the potential risk of losing your property, the Gilchrist County Tax Collectors Office wants to remind you that payment must be in our office by March 31, 2014. The tobacco industry is losing customers. Not only are more smokers quitting, every day, an estimated 1,315 people in the United States die because of smoking. In response, the tobacco industry targets a new generation of potential nicotine addicts, which they call replacement smokers. A 1984 internal document from R.J. Reynolds, the makers of Camel, stated: Younger adult smokers are the only source of replacement smokers If younger adults turn away from smoking, the industry must decline, just as a population which does not give birth will eventually dwindle. On Kick Butts Day, Gilchrists Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) Clubs throughout Florida spoke up and took action to let Big Tobacco know they will be not replacements. Kick Butts Day, which this year was celebrated on March 19, is the Campaign for TobaccoFree Kids national day of activism against Big Tobacco. Gilchrist County SWAT set up a booth at the Suwannee River Youth Fair to let area youth know that tobacco companies are targeting them as the next generation of tobacco the dangers of their products. Our Kick Butts Day event was very successful said Chandler Ash, a member of the Gilchrist SWAT 4-H Club. We got to reach out to hundreds of kids and tell them about how tobacco companies are trying to use them as replacements for tobacco users who died. We also got a chance to inform the kids at the fair that dangerous since it entices them to try tobacco products that could make them hooked for life. For each smoking-related death, at least two youth or young adults become regular smokers each day. These young people rarely consider the long-term health consequences of smoking when they start. The fact is that nine out of 10 smokers start by age 18.

Pictured at right: Midges grandson will be getting this quilt for his graduation The quilt is memories Submitted On a sparkling spring day, Trentons Suwannee Valley Quilt Festival, held on Saturday, Mar. 15th, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., welcomed its largest crowd of visitors in its seven-year history. and others offered their wares on Main Street. Over thirty quilting groups displayed quilts, conducted quilted articles. Stephanie Metts, President of festival said, We are very pleased with the wonderful visitor turn out. Local restaurants were busy serving customers, and several festival food vendors ran out of menu selections as the festival concluded. Pat Watson, festival board member in charge of organizing the festival layout, arranged booths down the time. Vendors, quilting groups and visitors all found this arrangement improved their festival experience. People could more easily view the quilt displays and browse at vendor booths as they moved through downtown, said Pat. The festival celebrates the quilting arts, and produces excitement among area quilting groups. It engages and inspires the general public by showcasing quilts and quilted articles of every description. One display this year focused on Seminole and Miccosukee quilts and patchwork sewing. We want to increase the educational aspects of the festival so quilting in our culture and history said Metts. This educational impulse aligns project, the Florida Quilt Trail. Two new quilt blocks were added in Trenton just before the festival. Located at Trenton Gift and Floral, the diamond shaped spring basket design expressed in quilts. The other quilt block, added at the Trenton Depot, the eastern trailhead for the Nature Coast State Trail, features a railroad crossing design and celebrates the intertwined history of railroading and Suwannee Valley Quilt Festival celebrates another successful year quilting. Planning is already underway for next years festival, which is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 21, 2015. Each year we review the festival to of all participants, said Metts. We hope to continue to grow the festival each year to attract more visitors to Trenton. So many newcomers and visitors to our state are just learning about the rural communities of North Central Florida. The festival is an attractive day trip for people who want to experience a different Florida often overlooked in the cacophony of beach and theme park advertisements. This event introduces a different Florida lifestyle. The 2014 festival was sponsored by the City of Trenton, the Gilchrist County Commission, the Gilchrist County Chamber of Commerce, Pure Water Wilderness, the Suwannee Valley Quilt Shoppe, plus a number of businesses and individuals in the tri-county area. The ladies in the Ayers Cooking Club look forward to this event not only because they LOVE to cook, but they also get a chance to mingle and meet new people too! Most of them have been exceptional cooks all their adult lives. Cooking was taught to them at a young age by their mothers and grandmothers, and we all know what great cooks mothers and grandmothers are! Tressie Cannon, Mary Jo English, Ruth Almond, and Loretta Martin attended the cook-off on behalf of the Cooking Club, and they were escorted by Ricky Overstreet, and volunteers Linda Knuckles and Jacqueline Matthews. They all enjoyed the delicious chili and dessert as well as lots of fun and fellowship with friends, they even got asked for a photo with the Sheriff Bobby Schultz.
