of them. Feeling was so high tuat
a few words were saufileat to brtiu

Birmingham (including suburbs) re
cords a majority of 1.263 against
Chairman J. Ide Long, of the State
Alabama anti-amendmeat committee,
Imued the following staemeot:
"I want to congratulate the people
of Alabama on their victory, won
through the efforts of the press.
"This will serve notice on future
generations that the people of Ala-
bama will not allow any of their per-
sonal liberties abridged.
"I hope that the gentlemen on the
other side will strike hands with us.
as we have malice towards none.
and Join us In a forward stride, so
that we can go on and make Alabama
the greatest State in the Union."
While the election was an apparent
landsllde in repudiation of prohibli
tione It In not regarded here as likely
that the State will ever go to the con
editions that existed before the adop-
tioo of the State-wide prohibition
laws. It is generally believed that
the result means ultimately a modifl-
ration of the present drastic laws.
'nt not necessarily their repeal.
Prohibit lontlat were largely re-
sponsible for the result. Counties
which have had prohibition for twen-
ty-flve years voted against putting it
into the State constitution, and cities
and towns of Jefferson county (Hlirm-
Ingham), which went heavily for pro-
tlbition under local option, reversed
the former majorltles. Some of the
chief temperance leaders of the State
fought the amendment.
