It' rBA BRIEFS J j j jj

I
By ODIE ANDERSON j. 1r

The spotlight continues to focus on the smoking of
cigarettes as the prime culprit in the cause of lung cancer
deaths and kicking the habit has become as popular as the
late President Kennedy's physical fitness program was
such a short time ago. In every office, in every social i.
grOUp and in many homes someone has developed what he
claims to be a sure-fire cure for the habit and those few i.I I
who"leave actually quit smoking seem to have grown a halo Ii '
.which they smugly wear instead of their former smoke \ I uI
ring. They have also grown quite unbearable. Of course,
4.
,
they were certainly unbearable in one way during the .. I
.early stages of their reform. And now, considering themselves =" i ,

past the point of no return, they are sickeningly
conceited about their own remarkable will power. Now, ,
they must tell the world all about It-particularly if they [

are in the field of journalism, a field that has gone a long
way toward supporting the leaf industry since 1620. r.
They must tell how, in the grip of tobacco D. T.'s, 1 1r
they bit the dog after every meal; they must give the dimensions 1
of all the signs reading "Thou Shalt Not Smoke"
with' which they papered every room In the house-including $t.-
the bath ; they must give in round figures the number
of pounds of life savers they ate-and the particular
flavor-and the distance in miles the sticks of chewing
gum would reach if laid end to end across the continental
United States. They must denounce all their former
friends who threw temptation in their righteous path and

shake their heads pityingly when these fellows 'light up.' Y iK I d;t f =. ;
(You know they're wondering whether or not they'll be
asked to serve as a pallbearer.) Mercifully, they no longer
quote the price of the prescription the doctor gave them

for the stomach malfunction which developed after they "
had eaten all their own fingernails.]
Now their world is all sweetness and light. They can
expound for hours on the joy of breathing pure air instead
of cigarette smoke and on the satisfaction of really
tasting food instead of stale tobacco. But we feel safe in

predicting that their clean living will disappear with the II hy
novelty of the thing and that they'll be back at the ,
tobacco counter-a little shame-faced perhaps-and with ray
nothing to show for all their trouble.

Our system ends differently, at least. Actually, break- -r: -_ _... -.".- a Ing the cigarette habit is simply a matter of dollars and Scenes from a spaghetti dinner given In honor of gubernatorial candidate Fred Dickinsontwo
