A Perry man was killed in a rollover crash so violent that the vehicles engine was shoved into the front cab Tuesday night in front of Doctors Memorial Hospital (DMH). The driver, Willie Gent, 65, was a former longtime City of Perry employee who retired in 2006. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. Police were dispatched to the scene at 7:19 p.m. When they arrived, ofcers found Gents truck on its side, a palm tree and sign knocked into the middle of the roadway, and Gent pinned in by both the vehicles engine and crushed cab. Emergency workers extricated Gent -who was strapped Billion dollar loss Timber damage trickles toward Taylor By MARK VIOLA Staff writer Hurricane Michael was the strongest storm ever recorded to hit the Florida Panhandle, destroying communities and lives, leveling entire neighborhoods and leaving large swaths of land in several counties in ruins. Further inland, the devastation continues, with some 2.8 million acres of timberland damaged or destroyed in Florida, which will have short-term and long-term effects on the forestry industry across North Florida and South Georgia. According to an assessment conducted by the Florida Forest Service, 346,911 acres of forest land received catastrophic damage, meaning 95 percent of the timber was damaged -leaving vast plots of pines leveled. More than one million acres suffered severe damage, with 75 percent of the timber damaged, while an additional 1.4 million acres received moderate damage (15 percent). Another two million acres were damaged in Georgia. According to Don Curtis with The Forestry Company, who has been appointed to a hurricane salvage task force, as soon as the timber was knocked down, a clock started counting down to when the wood will no longer be useable. Time is of the essence, he said. With so much timber now ooding the market, prices have plummeted, further affecting loggers and landowners, he said. That glut of wood will have a ripple effect, reducing prices. The largest user in the area, Westrock Pulp Mill in Panama City, is ofine right when it needs to be online to take that wood. Most of the other mills are up and running. District 3 County Commissioner candidates Jody DeVane and Sean Andrew Murphy did not submit responses to the questions posed by Perry Newspapers, Inc. DeVane, Murphy did not submit responses A-6 Perry News-Herald November 2, 2018 me. I consider my entire career serving in many different levels of governments as having been training for this job. I became interested in possibly serving as a commissioner while acting as the interim county administrator and having daily interaction with board members, constitutional departments. I have intimate knowledge of county policies, procedures and processes that even the sitting board members do not have. 2) Why do you believe you are the best or mostI believe what elevates and separates me from the other candidates is that I have worked for various levels of state and county government, preparing legislative budget requests, managing government budgets and supervising government employees. I promote employee rights, but require they know their responsibilities to act and work in a fair, responsive and compassionate manner. My philosophy is that all levels of the county must maintain public trust and know that they are responsible for protecting the hard-earned taxpayer dollars by being good stewards and competent employees. To work in government, at all levels, should be viewed as a privilege with pride and service. 3) What is your top you would like to see My top priority is ensuring that the needs and concerns of all of District 3 I think that I have proven that I listen to the concerns of my constituents and brought those concerns to the board for action including unpopular issues that required public hearings. While there are many more issues still facing District 3, such as our numerous dirt roads and code violations, Ive been looking for solutions and working to end procrastination. To date, I have attended approximately 28 meetings as a sitting commissioner and an additional 10 to 20 before my appointment. As a Big Bend Water Board member, I have As a Regional Library Consortium Board member, I have attended two quarterly meetings. As a Tourism Development Council board member, I have attended three meetings. Taylor Coastal Water and Sewer board meetings. I have also attended Community Advisory Committee meetings. business. I worked in both of my parents businesses. and my wife and I have our own successful small business. As such, I understand both the administrative getting things done. As your commissioner, I will continue to work to the utmost of my ability for you. Im all about discovering ways for the county to generate money, which allows the commission to provide services at no additional cost to the taxpayers. We are exploring the possibility of replacing the timber at the airport with a solar farm. If successful, the revenue generated by the solar farm would pay for all airport expenses. When I discovered the value of palmetto berries, which grow naturally in Taylor County, it occurred to me that we could harvest them from county property to generate income. We intend to put that plan into motion in the future. Bringing new jobs to Taylor County has been a major focus of mine and will continue to be a high priority if I am re-elected. 3. What is your top you would like to see In the past, I feel we have tabled and delayed important decisions too much. If I am re-elected I will continue to encourage my fellow commissioners time they are brought before us rather than table and delay multiple times. For example, after 14 years of sitting vacant we toward a possible sale of the old hospital building. This would change the hospitals status from being a burden to generating revenue for the county. I have attended all county commission meetings over the past year. mosquito-ridden, along with mosquito-born virus threats. There is no safe house or community centers to meet at in a time of disaster, nor any type of back-up generators. There are no public buildings that can also be used for community functions (reunions, receptions, meetings, tourist functions) in most areas. No playgrounds or activities for our youth in most areas. First responders in Steinhatchee work in and the beaches area has a legal and safe building. We have NO full-time law enforcement presence. Many roads (both paved and unpaved) are a hazard to drive or walk on, with 1st Avenue in Steinhatchee being a prime example. We have designated secondary evacuation routes that are not paved and wash out in normal rain events. We have no elected representation from county government, nor any accountability as to where our tax dollars are spent. We as a district have been overlooked for far too long. Being able to live in clean and safe communities within our district and throughout the entire county. No funding for Jody DeVane Sean Andrew Murphy resolved. I have a Masters degree in Healthcare Administration. I worked as a nursing home executive director for the last 12 years. This is where I to read and understand I also developed yearly business plans to achieve and development. My grandfather served Taylor County residents years ago as sheriff in 1878 and also as county commissioner. Another grandfather was also a county commissioner. I want to carry on our family tradition and serve as county commissioner for Taylor County residents in District 4. 3. What is your top you would like to see I would clean the roads up and repair the holes on the sides of the roads for safe driving. I would brainstorm with other commissioners and Taylor County residents to develop new businesses for Taylor County to provide future employment opportunities. I would also develop a fund to have a true Veterans Memorial Park -not just one for paying veterans and their families. I have not attended any meetings, I have been busy developmenting plans and strategies to win the election to serve as your representative in Taylor County Commission District 4. Taylor County. And, a better place to play by encouraging additional recreation opportunities for our youth and adult population. Bottom line, I will continue to serve my community through dedication and hard work, just as I have for years. 2) Why do you believe you are the best or mostFor the past eight years I have served as District 4 Taylor County Commissioner. Prior to that, I served four years on the Perry City Council. In addition, I have many years of management experience, having worked at the local hospital. I have proven leadership, experience and work ethic. I am results oriented, and hard-working work ethic by supporting the location of four new businesses, in addition to two more currently in the works, many new capital improvements such as the Forest Capital Hall renovation, three boat ramp renovations, a new Shady Grove community center and paving/ resurfacing several roads. My answers to both of those questions were no. Based upon my answers to those two questions, and after praying and discussing it with my family, I decided Commissioner District 3. believe you are the best or I believe my experience, education and connection to the people in District 3 make me the best candidate. Professionally I have held positions in heavy equipment operations, technician roles, as well as management positions. Working in these different roles enables me to understand day-to-day operations, planning and budgeting, as well as emergency response in each respective capacity. My education gives me the knowledge to better plan, analyze and manage the needs of today while proactively developing processes for the future. I have lived in District 3 all my life. and I have recently traveled across the district, meeting the residents, listening to their concerns and understanding their needs. This connection with the people, coupled with my experience and education. forms a partnership that makes me the best candidate for County Commissioner District 3. 3. What is your top you would like to see Once elected as County Commissioner of District 3, my priority will be to strengthen infrastructure. District 3 and all of Taylor County, and I believe it is an essential part of our future. I feel the needs can be grouped into short term needs and long term needs, according to the nature and cost of addressing each need. The residents of District 3 have made me aware of quite a number of concerns they have, and once elected, I will begin addressing the needs they have shared with me. I will develop a plan to prioritize each need so that they can be addressed as funds become available, and these funds will be utilized for the greatest return and In the past 12 months I believe I have attended 20 meetings. This includes workshops, special board meetings and regularly scheduled meetings. Given the fact that after the election, the new commissioner will be required to immediately go to work, it seemed responsible to be as informed, knowledgeable and familiar with all county activities as possible. I felt that attending these meetings was one good way to accomplish this goal, so I have been in attendance so that I can represent the people in the best fashion as quickly as possible after the election. qualities of being patient and longsuffering by raising nine children over the past 17 years, but someone else may have learned those same qualities by serving in the military. Ive also learned how to budget, plan, prioritize and multi-task. My children are very smart, hard working and respectful children. They already have a good name in the community and really enjoy serving our community. I know that they also will be involved in helping District 2! If we are using our good qualities to make the difference God intended, then we are doing what we are meant to do! I have fallen in love with the people of District 2. Ive enjoyed every visit, and if elected, I look forward to serving you all to the best of my ability! I know and personally have experienced what hard work, commitment and a good budget can accomplish, and I plan on using it! 3. What is your top One of the top priorities that I would like to see changed is the condition of Old Dixie Highway. I feel as though we will see another fatality if something is not changed soon. I have already taken numerous pictures of children riding their bicycles on this road. It scares me to think of one of them getting hit by a car. For the past four months I have been visiting people in my district. During these visits I have personally talked to 10 people that have recently almost hit someone on Old Dixie Highway. I feel as though this is a sign that some attention needs to be given to this area really soon! I know there are many other concerns in District 2 as well, and thats why I have put a plan in place to better serve you all. I have spoken with many of you about this plan. I have not attended many meetings in the past 12 months because I wasnt burdened to serve in this matter until this past June. Im looking forward to attending more meetings and learning and applying that knowledge to make informed decisions that are best for District 2. CRUCE Continued from page 5 As if her staff is not busy enough with the Nov. 6 election, Supervisor of Elections Dana Southerland is handling more phone calls after a recent mass mailing of intimidating letters, phone calls and texts. According to Southerland, the mailing shows whether or not neighbors have voted in prior elections and attempts to scare you with threats of telling others the same info about you. Texts and letters also falsely claim mail-in ballots have not been received. If you are a Taylor County voter and have any questions concerning your mail ballot, please contact directly at 838-3515. Watson & Lynn There are truly not enough words, or ways to extend our gratitude to friends, family and the community for the outpouring of love, hugs, owers, food, thoughts, calls and mostly the prayers during these very difcult times of losing two loved ones just weeks a part. Our hearts are broken, but all the love and support we have received over the past few weeks help us to begin the healing process. There is no way we can name everyone who has been by our side during all of this, just know that we love you all and appreciate everything you have done for us. We would like to say a special thank you the following people: Burns Funeral Home for the kindness and professionalism shown to our family. Each funeral service was exactly what we asked for, staff members were so loving and kind to us through it all, and for that we are grateful. U.S. Air Force Honor Guard for your presence at Pepas service. You all did an amazing job honoring our soldier/our veteran. Goodmans BBQ, the food and kindness from you all are unsurpassed. We cant say thank you enough for everything, and taking one less thing off our plate. 221 Gas & Grill, your kind and loving food donation was so thoughtful and much appreciated. Stellar Group, your generosity and love through these difcult times did not go unnoticed. You all are amazing. Brother David and Aunt Judy McMullen, there are not enough words; and thank you is not enough. We would have been truly lost without you all during this time. Your huge hearts and Christ-like nature pulled us up when were down. We love you and appreciate both of you. Darlene, Wayne, Jon and Kathryn Lago; we love you all. Your help and love to us will always be cherished, thank you so much. Finally, the Salem community, and BCFCU Staff. We are greatly appreciative for all the food, paper goods etc., along with kind words, love and prayers. You are all family to us and we thank each of you for everything. Please continue lifting us up in prayer. Much love to all, the family of Natalie Watson & Bruce Lynn Mathis The family of James Jimmy Emory Mathis would like to thank everyone for all the kindness and prayers during our loved ones passing. He will be greatly missed and was loved by many. Please keep our family in your prayers. May God bless, The Mathis family A-7 Perry News-Herald November 2-3, 2018 Religion You shall... You shall not worry, for worry is the most unproductive of all human activities. You shall not be fearful, for most of the things we fear never come to pass. You shall not carry grudges, for they are the heaviest of all lifes burdens. You shall face each problem as it comes. You can only handle one at a time anyway. You shall not take problems to bed with you, for they make very poor bedfellows. You shall not borrow other peoples problems. They can better care for them than you. You shall not try to relive yesterday for good or ill, it is forever gone. Concentrate on what is happening in your life and be happy now! You shall be a good listener, for only when you listen do you hear ideas different from your own. You shall not become bogged down by frustration, for 90% of it is rooted in self-pity and will only interfere with positive action. You shall count your blessings, never overlooking the small ones, for a lot of small blessings add up to a big one. --Author unknown Its not easy being old Kermit the frog says, Its not easy being green, and I say, its not easy being old! Its a God-given blessing, but it takes some getting used too. The hardest thing for me is remembering I cant do all the things I used to do. Ive retired from this, retired from that, downsized my activities and just completely changed the way I live. Some things, because of health issues, I just cant do anymore. Any how, Im adjusting pretty good and trying to stay active on a much slower key. Grandma Mary said we must always have some purpose for living, something to motivate us to get up in the morning. Having nothing to do, nowhere to go, dont want to be bothered, will soon become your way of life and idleness will steal your joy! So old folks, lets keep-a living and keep on giving. Somebody cares and needs us! Prayer focus Please keep these friends in your prayers: Tracey Oliver, Surando Blue, William Alexander, Sandra Davis (Orlando), Juanita Scott, Katie Monroe, Mother Helen Smith, the Rev. Robert Butler (Tallahassee), and the Rev. Izell Montgomery. October birthday shout-out Happy belated birthday wishes to Autumn Smith (Oct. 22). COUNCIL APPROVED $8.8 MILLION BOND ISSUEThe City of Perry attempted to issue $8.8 million in municipal bonds in order to nance the proposed renovations and reconstruction of the citys wastewater treatment plant. At a special meeting Friday, Oct. 29, 1983, the Perry City Council approved agreements with Livermore, Klein and Lott as the bond counsel and St. Johns Capital Investors as bond underwriters for the $8.8 million in bonds the city said it expected to issue. KINDERGARTNERS GOT RIDES FOR HALLOWEENThe kindergarten class of Darlene Rice at Perry Primary celebrated Halloween in a special way in 1983 with horse rides in the schoolyard. After baking pumpkin bread in coffee tins and decorating the slices into pumpkin faces, the class was paid a special visit from two new friends Red Man and Bay. Red Man and Bay were horses owned by Taylor County resident Earl Belle. Belle was the father of Aaron Belle, one of the students in Mrs. Rices class, and took time out of his workday to give the children a special treat. All the children got a chance to ride one of the horses around the schoolyard, with Belle leading the animals. HALLOWEEN AT THE ARMORYThe annual McDonalds National Guard Halloween Carnival was a great success again in 1983, as hundreds of Taylor County youngsters and their parents lled the Armory. The nights festivities began with a costume judging contest, but they didnt end there. Games of chance and skill, haunted houses and other traditional Halloween events kept children, their parents and the sponsors busy for hours. Refreshments were provided by McDonalds Restaurant. Ribbons were awarded to the rst and second place winners in each category of three age divisions in the costume contest. 1983 TCHS HOMECOMINGThe Cheezy Riders were one of the more enthusiastic entries in the 1983 TCHS Homecoming Parade Friday, Oct. 28, 1983. The crew included: Wayne Tedder, Jerry Brown, Mitzi Ezell, Billy Grant, Joe Sadler and Tommy Lee. MILITARY NEWSMarine Staff Sgt. Donnel Milton, son of Ludell Thompson of Greenville, was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. The Good Conduct Medal signied faithful and obedient service during a threeyear period. At the time, Milton served with the Marine Aircraft Group 119, Detachment A, South Weymouth, Mass.CITY HONORED 22YEAR EMPLOYEEGrover Grahams retirement coincided with the beginning of hunting season, but he swore it was just a coincidence. Graham would have plenty of time to hunt since he retired from the City of Perry Public Works after working for 22 years in the road department. He began his job with the city in 1962 and had missed very few days during his long tenure, according to Perry Mayor Joe Yarborough. We wish all our employees were as dedicated to their jobs as he was, Yarborough said. A-14 Perry News-Herald November 2-3, 2018 Community 63rd annual Florida Forest Festival Strutt Your Mutt Winners The 63rd annual Florida Forest Festival went to the dogs Friday night, Oct. 26 -and there was a whole lot of howling going on! The ninth annual Strutt Your Mutt pet parade was a success.
