By CAITLYN BURCHETT Contributing writer State Archives Historian Dr. Josh Goodman presented archival evidence at Monday nights Taylor County Historical Society meeting that Perry is at least a decade older than previously believed, contradicting the age-old tale of how Perry came to be. For as long as most can remember, the story has always been that Perry started out as a town called Rosehead, founded in 1869 and named after the wild roses that grew on the banks of nearby creeks. The name Perry did not ofcially come along until 1875 or so the story goes. In reviewing archival evidence, including maps, ofcial state and county records and correspondence with the postal service, Goodman found that Perry may be much older than Rosehead. Goodman is a Florida State University graduate, has a Ph.D. in history from Tulane University and is a staff historian at the State Archives of Florida. Having grown up in Taylor County, Goodman is passionate about the area and has been working on a monographic book on the history of Taylor County for 10 years. As you can imagine, one of the things that came up in the research was trying to gure out the origins of Perry, the origins of the county seat, how it got started, how the street grid was laid out, and what do we do with this thing called Rosehead that has made it into beautiful illustrations, songs, poetry and even the names of local businesses? Goodman said. Goodman went on a search for contemporary documents that would show Rosehead was established in 1869 and Perry came along in 1875, but found proof that the original story was not entirely accurate. According to Taylor County Emergency Management (TCEM) Director and Taylor County Sheriffs Ofce (TCSO) Chief Chuck Mincy, county ofcials have identied 126 local properties that were affected by Hurricane Michael, but none rise to the major level of damage. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) representatives are in the eld now registering local homeowners and business owners who may qualify for some type of assistance under the disaster declaration issued last week. Meanwhile, many locals are extending a helping hand to their neighbors in the west who were hit hard by the hurricane. (Please see story at left and page A-6.) Sheriff Wayne Padgetts ofce is also lending assistance to those in need. We received a request from the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to provide law enforcement ofcer support to Liberty County, stated Mincy. The additional SRO positions, as well as the TCSO budget as a whole, were major issues in the Taylor County Commissions sometimes contentious budget cycle this past summer, as the board worked to nalize its budget for the current scal year, which began Oct. 1. The county commission ultimately decided against raising property taxes and called for a 2.5% cut from all departments and constitutional ofcers -including the sheriff. A-4 Perry News-Herald October 19-20, 2018 October 19-20, 2018 Looking Back Remember when... By ANTHONY L. WHITE anthonylamarwhite@yahoo.comSometimes The End is just the beginning The End. Those two words have often ended months of restless days and nights spent writing my novels, plays and some very real places. I use the word often because there are times when The End doesnt mean my work is done. This is especially true when it comes to performance pieces, like stage plays and screenplays. Take my new play, The Long Goodbye, which will have its world premiere at the Monticello Opera House during the holiday season. I was tossed back into the writers creative process when casting and crew meetings for the production -a collaboration with Florida A & M Universitys (FAMU) Essential Theatre -began three weeks ago. First there was casting. During a meeting with FAMU Theatre Professor, and the plays director, Evelyn Tyler, who had performed in a reading of the play at the National Black Theatre Festival, I was asked about the plays characters. Questions like, how they look and why do they act that way. So, I had to go back and spend some time with Mrs. Pet, Clarence, Lottie Mae, Jeddie and the rest of the people who populate the story. As I was describing each character, it dawned on me that I needed to tell Evelyn that, although a black actor played Jeddie at the National Black Theatre Festival, the owner of the downtown caf where Mrs. Pet and Lottie work was white. You know something, Evelyn said after I told her. I was going to ask you about that. So, we changed the casting description of the character, and Tyler Wold, a white actor who works in radio from Tallahassee became our Jeddie. Next, came the setting. When I initially began writing the play several years ago, I made a few trips to Monticello to get a feel for the plays setting. The play, like the town of Monticello, underwent a few changes between then and now. The play was turned into a screenplay and then back to a stage play. And the caf I modeled Jeddies Caf after in the play closed several years ago. After meeting with our set designer and prop designer, I received a text from Evelyn. Fwd: Do we have any idea how long Jeddies Caf has been open? A question from the prop designer. I responded, Its been around. A I knew, as soon as I pressed send, my answer wasnt the one they were hoping for. Ok. For how long? Evelyn asked again. Thats when I had to step back into designer needed. It was an old downtown caf from the 1960s that Jeddie bought in the 1980s, and remodeled and renamed, I texted back. Ok. Thanks, Evelyn replied. For the next hour, since Id let the story transport me back to 1983 when Jeddie bought the caf and remodeled it, I sat at the counter eating a grilled cheese sandwich and listening to Kenny Rogers and Dolly Partons Islands in the Stream on the jukebox. The End. Note: Tickets for the play are now on sale at https:// For group tickets, including for the school day performance, please call Mike Herrin, executive director of the Opera House, at (850) 9974242. Quotable QuoteSEARCH WAS ON FOR MISSING GIRLArea law enforcement ofcers were searching for a local girl whose car was found abandoned near a wooded area off Front Street in the early morning of Saturday, Oct. 15, 1983. The car belonged to Perry resident Karen Millinor, 19, who was last seen early Saturday morning at the Seminole Restaurant. She was not reported missing until her roommate became worried when the girl had not returned home by Saturday afternoon.GREAT RACE ATTRACTED 400-PLUS RUNNERSBruce Carpenter had run the Great Race four times in the last decade, but Saturday, Oct. 15, 1983, the Gainesville marathoner made it his race. He covered the 6.2-mile course in 30 minutes, 57 seconds, while Miller was a close second in 31:06, Noel Shumann was third in 31:37. Wise words The glory and beauty of life is the diversity in our creation. One touch of nature makes the whole world kin. --William Shakespeare Bits of thoughts to cheer and mature Happiness A happy person is not someone in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes. The time to pray and praise God is not when we are in a tight spot, but just as soon as we get out of it. Real love begins when nothing is expected in return. --Referenced from Jerry Wiebels Words to Live By Before I was a mom Before I was a mom I made and ate hot meals. I had unstained clothing. I had quiet conversations on the phone. Before I was a mom I slept as late as I wanted and never worried about how late I got into bed. I brushed my hair and my teeth everyday. Before I was a momI didnt worry whether or not my plants were poisonous. I never thought about immunizations. Before I was a mom I had never been puked on, wet on, spit on, chewed on or pinched by tiny ngers. Before I was a mom I had complete control over my thoughts, my body, my mind. I slept all night. Before I was a mom I never held down a screaming child so that doctors could do tests, or give shots. I never looked into teary eyes and cried. I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin. I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep. Before I was a mom I never held a sleeping baby just because I didnt want to put it down. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I could not stop the hurt. I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much. I never knew when I could not stop the hurt. I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much. I never knew that I could love someone so much. I never knew I would love being a mom. Before I was a mom I didnt know the feeling of having my heart outside my body. I didnt know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby. I didnt know that bond between a mother and her child. I didnt know that something so small could make me feel so important. Before I was a mom I had never gotten up every 10 minutes, in the middle of the night, to make sure that all was okay. I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderfulness, or the satisfaction of being a mom. I didnt know I was capable of feeling so much, before I was a mom. --Author unknown Tips for senior citizens Taking care of yourselves is now one of your priorities. You have taken care of everything, for everybody. So dont get it twisted, its your me time now. Be honest with yourselves about your health, your healthcare and dont be shy about asking your doctors questions and expect answers you can understand. Seniors should be treated medically with the same devotion, dignity, love and care as human beings. The world, as a whole, cares and prepares for animals and pets, but they fail in their caring and preparation for senior citizens. Therefore, we must stay vigilant in making sure we are not being treated unfairly. We are indeed the backbone of society. Seniors matter! Prayer for guidance and protection to those I love O heavenly Father, our protector and guide, You are the greatest friend and joy we have! To be able to come to You in prayer like this is the most beautiful part of our lives! It is not for myself that I want to pray today, dear Father, but for those who are near and dear to me and about whom I am worrying. You know what they are facing, dear Father. And You know most of all the deepest reasons why these things have come upon them! ( And You know how I want to help. Truly, I think it would be easier if I could only face what they are facing. But You know how helpless we are to help another even though we know what is just and right. Only You are left, dear Father. Do be with them in all things at all times. Protect them from enemies and evil, my Father. Forgive them their sins and put love of others in their hearts. Oh, do make them happy in their lives at home, dear Father, and help them live as You would have them live. Above all, put love in their hearts for You. And thank You, my Father, for Your goodness to them and to me. Thank You for Your love and guidance and protection! May we honor you all the days of our lives. A-7 Perry News-Herald October 19-20, 2018 from another planet, fellow St. Johns member Vance Howell said. Every tree is down for miles. All the crops are destroyed and every building we saw was either destroyed or heavily damaged for miles. Much of the area is rural like Taylor County, with small communities and isolated homes spread throughout the woods. Many people are having to walk for miles to get to help because vehicles are blocked in by trees. It was truly heartbreaking. Today was a humbling experience. It was a blessing just to be able to help some of Gods people, Howell said. Words also cannot describe how much we appreciate all of those who have donated to our neighbors in need. The needs that remain are staggering. We will be making at least one more trip in the near future to take more supplies. I am just glad we could help, Knight added. You all have demonstrated your love and generosity. Today you have fullled the two greatest commandments. May our God repay you one hundred times over. Matthew 22:3740 reads: Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the rst and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. President John F. Kennedy en-US made his famed We choose to go to the en-US moon speech on Sept. 12, 1962, challenging en-US the countrys space program to accomplish en-US that mission by the end of the decade. To put en-US that in perspective, Astronaut John Glenn en-US en-US to orbit the Earth just eight en-US months prior. Although Kennedy would die in Dallas, Texas, just en-UStwo months after making his en-US speech, NASA would meet his en-US deadline when Astronaut Neil en-US en-US man to step foot on the moon en-US on July 21, 1969. It is that monumental moment, and more importantly en-USthe man who took that one en-US small step, which serves as the en-US en-US Man, directed by Damien en-US Chazelle (La La Land) and written by John en-US Singer (Spotlight, The Post) based on the en-US biography by James R. Hansen. There have been countless documentaries about the Apollo missions, as well as the en-USen-US fascination with the moon landing -and the en-US en-US -has obscured the actual people who were en-US there. Despite being a self-avowed space nut, en-US I must admit that I didnt realize how little en-US I knew about Neil Armstrong the man, the en-US father, the husband, brought to captivating en-US life by Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049) en-US in this movie. Even after watching this en-US en-US a half hours), I cant say I understand him en-US much better now that I did before, although en-US that is more due to the introverted nature of en-US First Man is very much a character piece, but it is one that doesnt pretend to know en-USits subject any more than it actually does, en-US a fact that I can respect, but it may leave en-US more questions than you might expect. The en-US en-US Armstrong undertook, from his days as a en-US en-US en-US 11 mission. In between these moments, we see his family life, beginning early on in the en-USen-US a brain tumor, an event that would shape his en-US life and his decisions forever.en-US Last week, I mentioned that if you need en-US an actor to play a broken character, few do en-US it better than Bradley Cooper. Well, if you en-US need someone to portray a stoic man who en-US bottles his emotions until he simply cant en-US anymore, look no further than Gosling. en-US Whether in small projects like en-US en-US like Bladerunner 2049, he en-US brings a gentle intensity (a en-US seeming oxymoron, I know) to en-US his work. And, that is exactly en-US what we get in his portrayal of en-US Armstrong, which, according en-US to the mans own sons, was en-US next to perfect. As best as I en-US can tell having seen the movie, en-US Armstrong was an engineer en-US who approached problems en-US with a clinical detachment, and en-US he brought that to the other en-US aspects in his life, whether it en-US was his family or the constant en-US threat of death that came with his vocation.en-US This is a relatively slow movie, as it tries en-US to cover about eight years of Amstrongs en-US life. This does result in numerous time en-US en-US everything straight requires a good bit of en-US attention, as moving from one scene to the en-US next could span days, months or even years. en-US If I have any issues with the movie, the en-US pacing early on would be it.en-US Chazelle, whose previous works involved en-US musicians and musicals, delivers a technically en-US en-US en-US nail-biting and should be seen on the biggest en-US en-US compare these moments to would be the en-US aerial scenes in Dunkirk.en-US Also, please ignore the controversy over en-US en-US the movie, youll understand why it wasnt en-US emphasized, and anyway, there are more en-US en-US en-US en-US the year and will be considered a Best Picture en-US frontrunner when award season arrives.en-US en-US content involving peril and brief strong en-US language. en-USEntertainment A-11 Perry News-Herald en-US en-US October 19-20, 2018 While this weekend only gives us one new movie en-USin wide release, we have en-US en-US for both your attention and en-US Halloween en-US, a sequel to the classic 1978 slasher en-USen-US featuring the homicidal en-US Michael Myers. A-12 Perry News-Herald October 19-20, 2018 audience a map of Perry printed by cartographer J. H. Colton with an print date pre-dating the establishment of Rosehead that he uncovered during his search. Goodman had also found the oldest known map of Perry in paperwork belonging to James Wentworth. Handwritten on the map by James Wentworth himself was the date . As Goodman spoke, a handwritten document came into focus on the presentation screen behind him. Goodman explained the signicance of the document as it was the discovery that conrmed Perry existed long before Rosehead. The document was a deed between William McMullen and Joseph H. Sappington for Lot 5 in Section 6 of the Town of Perry -dated Aug. 6, 1859. A wave of gasps and whispers rippled through the audience as the new information was revealed. That was not the only one. There are about a dozen town lots that were deeded to people in the 1850s and early 1860s in the Town of Perry. There are legal documents signed by John C. Calhoun when they did the transcripts in the early 1900s that conrm these documents are accurate, Goodman said. Based on these documents, because the area was being recorded repeatedly as the Town of Perry, it is very clear there was a town here called Perry at least as early as 1859, Goodman said. What Goodman found raised questions about when exactly Perry was established, when Rosehead was established, what Rosehead was supposed to be and how the story became so confused. According to archival records, Alan OQuinn applied for a Rosehead post ofce on Feb. 11, 1869. To be approved for a post ofce at this time, it had to be proven the new post ofce was located far enough away from other existing post ofces that it would be a burden for the people in the area of the new post ofce to get to the other post ofces. Applicants also had to give a very precise location of where the post ofce was going to be and had to explain how the mail carrier was going to get things to the new post ofce. Alan OQuinn wrote on his application that the Rosehead post ofce was to be located in the northwest quarter of section ve. Guess where that is? Not in Perry. Not in Perry at all, it is miles away. It is in Pisgah, another very old and very prominent settlement in Taylor County, Goodman said. I swear, one member of the audience gasped. Goodman said the reason why county ofcials would apply for the only post ofce at this time to be located so far away from the courthouse can be found in three clues. He presented to the audience three orders: one for an election for the removal of Perry as the county seat; one granting citizens the right to remove trees from the streets of Perry; and an order for town lot owners to give up their titles for re-selling. It looks like they were not happy with where the county seat was in 1869. We can assume from all of this, that even though it was established in 1859, Perry had not developed to a point that people in the county thought it would be sustainable as a county seat, Goodman explained. Goodmans theory is that the residents of the county may have seen more potential in Pisgah as the site for the county seat. Pisgah was where the rst school was established, where the rst wood-frame house was built, and it was a little bit closer to the greater population. That might explain why there might have been a movement to re-establish the county seat. So how did all this confusion come about? Goodman asked the audience. Goodman showed postal maps from 1869-1875 with Rosehead -not Perry -appearing near the center of Taylor County and said, As far as the postal service was concerned, Perry did not exist because there was no ofcial post ofce called Perry. Perry was not ofcially recognized by the postal service until after December 1875, when the second assistant postmaster general from Washington sent a letter to Henry Tillman, the postmaster of Rosehead at that time, asking for clarication on the location of Rosehead and Perry. According to archival documents, Tillman wrote back, Perry and Rosehead is one and the same place. By the same mistake, the post ofce was named Rosehead when it should have been named Perry. Perry is the county seat of Taylor County, Fla. As the presentation concluded, Goodman was asked, Have you come across anything that indicates where the Rosehead legend of the owers on the creek come from? The earliest indication I have comes from the writings of Taylor County resident W. T. Cash. He wrote that he heard the story from his mother, who lived through the establishment of Perry and its formative years, Goodman said. Goodmans discovery will bring changes to the Taylor County Historical Society and how the history of Perry is explained, society volunteer J.T. Davis said. It will be an interesting story to tell. Everything we have in our collection has little connections to Rosehead, the maps, writings, tapestry. There are little roses sown into or etched on everything throughout the history of Perry, Davis said. He believes the reason the name Rosehead stuck with the town of Perry was because everyone referred to the town as Rosehead, as evidenced in the writings and artifacts at the Historical Society. The legal documents may have said it was the Town of Perry, but to the locals, it was always Rosehead.
