With maximum sustained winds of 155 mph, Hurricane Michael was the most powerful hurricane to strike the Florida Panhandle in recorded history -devastating much of the Emerald Coast, including Mexico Beach and Panama City. However, here in Taylor County, the damage was limited to coastal ooding and power outages, thanks mostly to the storms tightly-condensed nature, with hurricane-force winds only extending about 50 miles from its center. In comparison, Hurricane Irma, which made landfall October 12-13, 2018 50Friday/ Saturday www.perrynewspapers.com 5 Friday Saturday87 62 Sunday89 70 87 55Index Looking Back . ......... That is the rst thing Cashway Building Products founder Walter Davis Buddy Helm Sr. would want you to know, according to his son, Bud Helm Jr. He lived a good life, Bud said of his late father, who passed away on Sept. 26 at the age of 81. Taylor County has been good to our family. He was looking forward to running a photo in the paper with the entire family in front of the new storefront thanking everyone for their business over the last 50-plus years, Bud added. The elder Helm began his career selling lumber and hardware in Perry when he was hired to manage a local branch of Capital Cash and Carry -a Tallahassee-based building supply store that opened a local branch here in the 1960s. The company would not buy him a truck or a forklift, and he was having to load and unload everything by hand, so he decided to leave around 1964, Bud said. He and Charles Mincy formed a partnership and opened Cashway Building Products in Eastpoint. They saw an opportunity when the state built a bridge over to St. George Island, Bud remembers. In fact, they built the rst two or three houses over there. When Capital Cash and Carry closed the Perry store location around 1965, it left an opportunity for Helm and Mincy to relocate Cashway Building Products to Perry, setting up shop in a building located on U.S Hwy. 19. Charles and Daddy (Photo, left) Walter Buddy Helm Sr. is shown sitting on heart pine sinker logs that were cut down with an ax around 1837 in South Georgia and later recovered from the Withlacoochee River. Back then the largest sawmill in the world was located where the Suwannee and Withlacoochee came together, and the rivers were the only way to get these logs to the sawmill, Bud Helm said. (Above) Helm was an avid outdoorsman and quail hunter. Please see page 2 Steady at the HELM Iron Horse Super Bog approved The Taylor County Commission has voted to approve the special event permit necessary to hold the planned Oct. 18-21 Super Bog planned at Iron Horse Mud Ranch on Hwy. 19 South in Taylor County. Local attorney Trey Howard, who represents Iron Horse Mud Ranch, addressed the commission at its Oct. 1 meeting, telling commissioners that Iron Horses special event permit application documents were in order, with the exception of a consent release from one adjacent property owner. According to Howard, the previous owner had signed the waiver, but had since passed away. Howard said he was working with representatives of the family trust to complete the paperwork. Commissioner Malcolm Page made a motion to approve the application contingent on the county receiving the nal paperwork. Commissioner Jim Moody seconded. I know the ambulance service has to be there, and the sheriffs ofce has to be there, and the re department is going to be there, according to the contract, Commission Chair Pam Feagle said. Do we charge any kind of fee for the re department to be there? Please see page 2 Schools are closed today and Monday The Taylor County School District will remain closed today (Friday) beyond the three days already announced in response to Hurricane Michael. Students will also be off on Monday due to an already-scheduled teacher planning day. We are very fortunate and thankful that our community made it through the storm with minimal damage, Superintendent Danny Glover Jr. said in an e-mail sent district-wide Thursday morning. However, we would like to continue to remember the rest of the panhandle communities that were not so lucky. There are many unknown factors at this time -many are still without power, some employees have left town to avoid the storm and we are not 100% Please see page 3 Please see page 3Residents along the Taylor County coastline responded well to orders to evacuate leading up to Hurricane Michael making landfall along the Florida Panhandle. According to Taylor County Sheriffs Ofce (TCSO) Maj. Marty Tompkins, who was in charge of patrol duties during the hurricane, most residents heeded the warnings. We had the best cooperation ever from the beaches area. There were maybe two families who stayed. They took it very seriously, Tompkins said. We also had good cooperation from Spring Warrior and Econna. More people stayed in Steinhatchee than we would have liked, Tompkins added. The Taylor County Commission met at 12 noon on Monday, declaring a local state of emergency and issuing a voluntary evacuation order for coastal and low-lying areas in the county. PERRY THEATER WAS TO REOPEN BY CHRISTMASA Lakeland-based movie theater corporation purchased the former Perry Triple Theatre building and had plans to reopen the business before Christmas of 1983, according to the managers Robert and Dorothea Long The Longs also managed a similar theater in Palatka. The Perry Triple Theater was located behind the Perry Square Shopping Plaza. Long said that Floyd Theaters, Inc. had closed a deal for the purchase of the building, and that renovation had already begun. He said that he began working for the company more than 16 years ago, and had since traveled all over the nation managing theaters. Long said that he felt the new company and his management could make the theater a regular meeting place for the people of Perry. NEW BUSINESS WANTED ENTERPRISE ZONES IN CITYA construction company from a neighboring county was thinking of locating a plant in Perry, but was more likely to locate here if the city designated a portion of the city as an enterprise zone, according to Mayor Joe Yarbrough. Yarbrough told members of the Taylor County Development Authority that an asphalt company ofcial from Chieand had approached City Manager Bill Noonan about the creation of an enterprise zone. If a city designated an area as economically depressed, any new businesses that located there, or existing businesses which expanded in the zone, could reap large tax savings off their Florida taxes. STARNES WAS NEW KIWANIS PRESIDENTIncoming president of Perry Kiwanis Club Mark Starnes presided over the clubs rst meeting of the 1983-84 year on Oct. 5, at the Skylark Restaurant. Dr. Josh Goodman For as long as most of us can remember, the story has always been that Perry started out as a town called Rosehead, founded in 1869 and named after the wild roses that grew on the banks of the nearby creeks. The name Perry didnt ocially come along until 1875...or so the story goes. However, archival evidence, including maps, ocial state and county records and correspondence with the postal service, show that Perry is actually much older than Rosehead, and was founded long before 1869. So what exactly was Rosehead? When was Perry actually established, and how did the story get so confused? Join State Archives historian Dr. Josh Goodman at the October meeting of the Taylor County Historical Society Monday, Oct. 15, for a presentation tracing the origins of Perry and Rosehead as revealed in local historical documents, as well as records from the state and national archives. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. and all interested persons are invited to attend. A glance at the past THE PERRY NEWS-HERALD October 12, 1983 Remember when... By ANTHONY L. WHITE anthonylamarwhite@yahoo.com Who gives this woman? Who gives this woman to be married to this man? Ill be there when my lifelong friends Jackie Alexander and Wayne Flowers tie the knot Saturday, but I wont be the one giving her away. Not this time. I gave her away more than 30 years ago when Wayne stopped me during a game of pool and asked like a gentleman if he could date my best friend. I really like your Jackie, he said. Will you talk to her for me? I responded with a stupidlooking grin. Whats that look for? he asked. Since Wayne and I were good friends, I felt I needed to tell him the truth. Or at least what I thought was the truth. Wayne, I said. Were cool, and you know that. But, I cant let you date Jackie. Not today. Not ever. Why do you say that? he asked in the calmest of tones. from responding matter-of-factly, Because shes not looking for a boyfriend. Did she tell you that? he asked. I know her like a book, so she didnt have to tell me, I shot back. But she did. Wayne nodded and made sure I knew there were, No hard feelings. As soon as I got home (we didnt have cell phones back then), I called Jackie and told her what Wayne had asked me. She giggled. Jackie and I have been the best of friends since we became classmates in kindergarten, so I knew that giggle was veiling something. And since she didnt ask how I responded to Waynes question, I decided to tell her anyway. I told him you were not looking for a boyfriend. She giggled again. Jackie, is there something you need to tell me? I asked. No, she said. I just thought it was funny. She was still giggling when I hung up the phone. About a week later, I was headed home when Jackies car pulled up beside me and Wayne leaned out the passenger window and yelled, Not today! Not ever! Jackie giggled. Thats when I realized Wayne wasnt really asking for my permission. He was trying to tell me what Jackie couldnt tell me through all that giggling. I wasnt happy for all of three minutes, then, like a best friend should, I forgave her and blessed their relationship. So, who gives this woman to be married to this man? Saturday, it will be William Alexander -Jackie dads -turn. Not mine. My turn was over 30 years ago when I gave her away to be his girlfriend.

Tickets are $15 for general admission with open seating. For more en-USinformation about the concert en-US or to purchase tickets, visit en-US www.nfcc.edu/artist-series/.en-USIve never read the Spider-Man comics, but Ive seen enough of the cartoons and movies en-USto have a decent grasp of the character and en-US his various villains and allies. So, I knew en-US enough of Venom to know that his portrayal en-US in Spider-Man 3 was an affront to most en-US fans. With Sony signing off the rights of Spider-Man himself en-USto Marvel and the Marvel en-US Cinematic Universe (MCU), en-US en-US out how to make movies (and en-US more importantly, money) en-US with all of the characters they en-US still control, including Venom. their own cinematic universe en-USis Venom, with Tom Hardy en-US (The Dark Knight Rises) as en-US Eddie Brock, a reporter who en-US asks a few too many questions en-US en-US an alien symbiote (like a parasite). Since Venoms character in the comics is inextricably linked to Spider-Man, the en-USwriters had to come up with a different story, en-US one involving an Elon Musk-type billionaire en-US named Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed, Rogue en-US One: A Star Wars Story). When Eddie goes en-US too far in an interview, he ruins both his own en-USWilliams, The Greatest Showman). Then en-US comes his encounter with Venom, an alien en-US symbiote brought to Earth by Drake to create en-US a better human that can survive in space.en-US Eddie discovers that if he wants to survive en-US Drakes goons, as well as Venoms fellow en-US symbiotes, he will need to en-US work together with the entity en-US inside his body and his mind.en-US Venom really feels like a en-US comic book movie made 15 en-US years ago, before Christopher en-US Nolans Batman trilogy or the en-US MCU, when adaptations tried en-US to bring the zaniness of the en-US comics to the big screen rather en-US than ground them in reality. en-US Theres not a problem with en-US that approach, but Venom is en-US also trying to be a hard PG-13 en-US en-US and this results in some really en-US wonky tonal shifts, especially with Venoms en-US character, who is very sarcastic and makes en-US jokes with Eddie.en-US Venom does provide some fun, and its en-US not nearly as bad as a lot of critics are saying.en-US The movie is rated PG-13 for intense en-US en-US for language en-USEntertainment A-11 Perry News-Herald en-US en-US October 12-13, 2018 Okay, folks, so I dont know when theaters in en-USour area will re-open after en-US Hurricane Michael, but en-US hopefully it will be soon, en-US because there are some very en-US en-US this weekend. en-USBad Times at the El Royale from writer/ director Drew Goddard, en-USwho wrote and directed en-US the modern horror classic en-US Cabin in the Woods and en-US penned the Academy Award-en-US nominated script for The en-US en-US be a mystery thriller with a en-US en-US thrown in, following a group en-US of strangers who arrive at the en-US title hotel, each with their en-US own agenda and secrets. en-US The trailers have done a en-US en-US look very intriguing without en-US giving away much, if any, of en-US the story. What I do know en-US en-US that includes Jeff Bridges en-US (Kingsman: The Golden en-US Circle), Jon Hamm (Baby en-US Driver), Chris Hemsworth en-US en-US Dakota Johnson ( Shades en-US of Grey) and more. I really en-USbe as good as it looks like en-US it will be, but I cant wait to en-US en-US en-US strong violence, language, en-US some drug content and brief en-US nudity.en-US Up next is another en-US Oscar contender, en-USFirst en-US Manen-US. Directed by Damien en-US Chazelle (Whiplash, La en-US La Land) and written by en-US Josh Singer (Spotlight, en-US en-US the story of astronaut Neil en-US Armstrong (Ryan Gosling, en-US Blade Runner 2049), from en-US his life at home to the famed en-US mission that led to him en-US en-US en-US looks beautiful based on the en-US trailers, giving everything en-US a very 60s-era aesthetic. en-US The early buzz has been en-US extremely positive from both en-US the critics who got to see the en-US en-US as well as Armstrongs own en-US sons. This is sure to be a en-US Best Picture contender once en-US awards season begins.en-US en-US for some thematic content involving peril and brief strong language. en-USFinally, we have en-US en-USGoosebumps 2: Haunted en-US Halloweenen-US, the second en-US en-US en-US en-US was a bit of a surprise hit en-US back in 2015, so its not en-US really a shock that a sequel en-US en-US made the interesting choice en-US en-US version of Stine into the en-US movie (played by Jack en-US Black) along with his books, en-US which magically contain the en-US monsters he wrote about. en-US This time around, a group of en-US kids once again unleash the en-US horrors onto their town when en-US they open the one book Stine en-US never meant to be found, en-US The Haunted Halloween. en-US Im not sure how large a part en-US en-US as he doesnt show up in the en-US trailers, but if hes in it, he en-US will be competing against en-US himself in The House with en-US a Clock in Its Walls.en-US The movie is rated PG en-US for scary creature action en-US and images, some thematic en-US elements, rude humor and language. FESTIVALS Venom is an old-school comic book movie en-USCALENDAR OF EVENTS TTHEATRE FESTIVALS TTHEATRE The second annual Party en-USin the Pines Music Festival en-US scheduled for Oct. 19-20 en-US in White Springs has been en-US canceled.en-US On Wednesday, festival en-US organizers posted the en-US following message on their en-US website and Facebook page: en-US It is with a heavy heart that en-US Party in the Pines Music en-US Festival has been cancelled en-US due to circumstances beyond en-US our control. We are working en-US on a plan to compensate en-US ticket holders and sponsors. en-US Details will be posted to our en-US website Partyinthepines.com en-US and social media pages soon.en-US We realize this impacts en-US many people in many en-US different ways. We apologize to our supporters and team en-USmembers who have worked en-US hard to bring this event to our community. The festival was to have en-USa musical line-up featuring en-US Zac Brown Band, Little en-US Big Town, Kip Moore, en-US Luke Combs, Dan & Shay, en-US Granger Smith, The Cadillac Three and more. Party in the Pines canceled, but not because of Michael en-USIf you have an event you would en-US like included in our calendar en-US of events, please call us at en-US 850-584-5513. CONcCERTS To be completely honest, A Star is Born en-USto see if I didnt review movies. It looked en-US great, but based on the trailers, I felt it was en-US going to include some serious heartbreak in en-US addition to its music. And, I was right, but en-US Im glad I went to see the movie, because en-US it is an exceptional debut en-US directing effort from Bradley en-US Cooper (American Sniper) en-US and boasts a wonderful en-US performance from Lady Gaga en-US (American Horror Story). This is the fourth time Hollywood has told this story. en-USThe original version debuted en-US in 1937 with Janet Gaynor and en-US Fredrick Marsh, followed by en-US remakes in 1954 starring Judy en-US Garland and James Mason, en-US as well as 1976 starring en-US Barbra Streisand and Kris en-US Kristofferson. The story follows an alcoholic musician (Cooper), who meets a young singer (Lady en-US career is beginning to sink. en-USFirst off, let me say that Cooper can sing en-US much better than I ever expected, and Lady en-US Gaga can act even better. Cooper has played en-US broken characters before for award-winning en-US directors David O. Russell in Silver Linings en-US Playbook and Clint Eastwood in American en-US Sniper. He was nominated en-US for both performances, but his en-US work in A Star is Born may en-US be his best yet. I could see him en-US and Lady Gaga earning nods en-US this awards season, as well as en-US en-US In addition to the en-US performances, the music en-US is also quite good, and Im en-US considering buying the en-US soundtrack -not something I en-US was expecting going in.en-US en-US along this journey, but the en-US story, the characters and the en-US music make it worth taking the trip.en-US en-US some sexuality/nudity and substance abuse. A Star is Born is a tale of music and heartbreak
