SPECIAL FESTIVAL EDITION INSIDE TODAY According to Georgia police: Missing mans remains found The Americus Police Department (APD) in Georgia reported Tuesday that skeletal remains found in a wooded area there are believed to be those of former Perry resident Derek Parks, 32, missing out of Tallahassee. Law enforcement in the Georgia town received information last Friday, Sept. 14, that Parks body may be located in an area off the 900 block of Railroad Street. Ofcers searched the area and located the remains of an unidentied person at approximately 7 a.m., according to reports. While a positive identication has not been made, APD did say investigators believed the remains to be those of Parks. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) assisted in the investigation, and the GBI Crime Scene Unit recovered the remains, which were transported to the state crime lab. Derek Parks, an Army veteran who served in Iraq, had been missing since July 20. Police in Americus, Ga., announced that skeletal remains found in a wooded area there are believed to be Parks. K-9 teams from the Madison County Sheriffs Ofce (MCSO), along with teams from both the Madison and Hamilton correctional institutions, tracked Dale Ray Evans Jr., 21, for more than two hours before apprehending him. MCSO Major David Harper reported that deputies were dispatched to a residence on Osteen Avenue at 11:02 a.m. in reference to a verbal altercation resulting in property damage. Prior to arrival, the deputies were informed that the person who had caused the damage was Dale Ray Evans Jr, and he had ed the residence into the woods behind the home. The complainant told deputies that Evans was her brother, and that the two of them were sitting in their fathers vehicle when a verbal dispute ensued. Evans reportedly struck the dash area of the vehicle, breaking it. He then exited the vehicle and ed into the woods, Harper said. Deputies were able to conrm that Evans was currently on probation for narcotic-related offenses and, as a condition of his probation, he is required to wear an ankle monitor. Evans cut the ankle monitor off his leg prior to running into the woods. It was also further conrmed that Evans had active felony violation of probation arrest warrants for additional narcotic offenses issued in Taylor County. At the conclusion of the Thursday meeting, Feagle stated, Mr. Lakey, I still have members of the public asking me if your family has moved to Perry permanently. They have not, Lakey replied. Is it your plan to wait until the end of December to bring them? Feagle asked, referring to Lakeys two-year employment anniversary date the following month in January, 2019. It is my plan to nish renovating my house so they can move, Lakey responded. So, we will be going on two years then in January, and we all know what the contract says. The public is asking me, and I dont know the answer to that question, so that is why I am asking you, Feagle stated. I am a homeowner at 206 Dogwood Way. I dont understand why I am having to explain all this in a public forum. I would be happy to meet with you about it, Lakey replied. It is the public...people asking about it...there is nothing to hide, Feagle responded. I bought a house under a foreclosure situation. It needs a lot of work. It needs window replacement. And my family does not want to move in because the windows are not functioning properl, Lakey said as he took the podium to respond. And, it needs some new doors. So that is the situation. Anyone else have any questions? Please see page 2 Fireem up! By SARAH HARDEN Staff writer At a meeting just two weeks prior to the Sept. 17 active school shooter drill which left 11 students and staff dead or wounded the Taylor County School Board was asked to consider a list of recommended safety facility updates to harden local campuses against such real-life threats. The Florida Department of Education (DOE) Ofce of Safe Schools recently released statewide funding allocations for hardening campuses, and according Taylor County School District Safety Specialists Dan Anderson and Chris Olson, Taylor County will receive $100,000 of those funds. It was kind of depressing, Olson said. As a district we got $100,000. Dade County got $12 million. The rural counties are not treated equally I dont think. Olson explained that due to shortage of funding, Taylor County would have to harden campuses in stages. WOODLAWN MAPPED A long, arduous task of compiling a directory to Perrys city-owned Woodlawn Cemetery was undertaken early in 1983 and was still a good two months from completion as of Sept. 21 the same year. With the help of longtime Perry Superintendent of Utilities Lamar Folsom, the Perry Womans Club compiled a list and location of people buried in the cemetery. Womans Club members Inez Cone and Ann Herrington did the lions share of the work in compiling the list, Club President Alma Walker said. The pair started from the oldest part of the cemetery at the corner of Cherry and Center Street, and worked their way through the three additions to the original cemetery. The oldest gravestone they found was one from 1849. A rough estimate indicated there had been about 2,500 burials in the 12-city block cemetery, Cone said. OLD PAVILION PACKED EM IN Discriminating diners, desiring the highest quality food and service, were guaranteed an enjoyable meal at the romantic Old Pavilion Restaurant in Keaton Beach, Master Chef J. Paul McKinney said. The restaurant re-opened Sept. 2, 1983, after being closed for eight months. McKinney, a 17-year veteran food service worker who came to The Old Pavilion Restaurant after being head chef at the Pensacola Beach Holiday Inn, guaranteed an enjoyable meal because each order was prepared to the customers specic request. Another reason the chef knew that every meal would meet customers taste buds with happy sensations came from close attention to quality control. The restaurants romantic atmosphere included providing diners with the ability to watch beautiful sunsets on the Gulf of Mexico. The chef said that business had been good since the opening. Weve had a really warm reception, McKinney said. BIRTHSCory Ellis Deschner Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. A-4 Perry News-Herald September 21-22, 2018 September 21-22, 2018 Looking Back Remember when... By ANTHONY L. WHITE email@example.comI used to be scared of everything. My shadow. The dark. Anything that crawled or walked on four feet or two if they werent human feet. But nothing, and I mean nothing, scared me more than snakes. Then and now. Just typing the word snake is causing me anxiety. So, imagine what I felt the other morning when I stepped outside to speak to my cousins across the street and came face to face with one of my worst fears crawling in the hedges by the door. My cousins Tangerla and Sherl were pulling in my cousin Dionns driveway when they heard me yell, A snake, and saw me run back inside and slam the door. I looked out of the window and saw Sherl and Tangerla get out of the car. Keith! Sherl yelled for one of my neighbors. Antmar just saw a snake. I cautiously opened the front door when I saw Keith, Sherl and Tangerla walk up. I see him, Sherl yelled, then began laughing. Ant, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. That snake aint but six or seven inches. I wouldnt care if he was still in the egg, I responded. Keith picked up a rake by the door and started hitting at the snake, trying to get him out of the bush. I wanted to help, so I ran in the house and rushed back out with a bottle of Windex. What are you going to do with that? all three of them asked at the same time. Maybe snakes hate ammonia, I answered. When spraying the bush with Windex didnt make him come out, I went back in the house and returned with a pot of hot water. (PETA please forgive me.) And what is that supposed to do? Keith asked. I tossed the hot water on the bush and showed him. When that didnt work, I ran back in the house and returned with a lighter and some old newspapers. down, Sherl laughed, as she used a stick to help Keith run the snake out of the shrub. Im about to smoke him out, I answered. I lit the newspaper, then used a stick to push it under the shrub. The snake began to crawl and somehow disappeared. Before Keith walked back over to his house, he told me that type of snake was harmless, and I should get some mothballs to put around the hedges. A few minutes later, the snake reappeared in the shrub. This time, Sherl yelled for Dionns son, Eric, who rushed over and did battle with the snake in the shrub. The snake disappeared again. An hour later, I tossed so many mothballs around the yard and hedges that you could smell them two blocks over. Thursday morning, my uncle Moon called to warn me, but it was too late. I killed that little snake in the driveway this morning before I left, he said. And you left him there, I responded. He laughed, and I know why. He knew I would be stuck inside the house until someone comes and removes the dead snake from the driveway. Wise words Let me not stress myself out thinking about what will happen tomorrow. Let my worried mind understand that the same helpful hand of God that took care of me yesterday is taking care of me today and will take care of me no matter what happens in the days to come. I should put aside anxious thoughts and be at peace, for I believe He will either shield me from harm or He will give me strength to carry the weight. --Author unknown Tips Its easy to forgive someone when both are at fault. But its more difcult when the offense seems one-sided. Accepting an apology and forgiving takes true humility. Bible principle: Be quick to settle matters. Matthew 5:25: Be sure to make friends quickly with your opponents while you are with them on your way to court. Otherwise, they will haul you before the judge, etc. If you hold onto resentment, you can harm yourself physically and emotionally. Forgiveness puts out the ames of a conict. The mouse trap A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. What food might this contain? the mouse wondered he was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap. Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning: There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house! The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it. The mouse turned to the pig and told him, There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house! The pig sympathized, but said, I am so very sorry Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers. The mouse turned to the cow and said, There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house! The cow said, Wow, Mr. Mouse. Im sorry for you, but its no skin off my nose. So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmers mousetrap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout the house --like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmers wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmers wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital, and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soups main ingredient. But his wifes sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmers wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them. The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness. So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesnt concern you, remember -when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. --Author unknown By SARAH HALL Whats missing? U are Sarah Hall Every Wednesday morning before school, a few Big Bend Technical College (BBTC) students, teachers and administrators meet with a local pastor and associate pastor for a weekly devotional. A few weeks ago Pastor David Stephens of First Assembly of God asked the students, How could the school be better? One of the students mentioned that sometimes it was difcult making ends meet while going to school full-time. Another said that when they were in high school, the Backpack Food Program (a program to ght childhood hunger in the community by lling the weekend food gap for children in need) was a big help. The next day, the administration announced a food drive contest explaining to the students that the food collected would be placed in the newly-created Food Pantry that would be open for any student to have lunch and/or take food home. The program that collected the most food items would receive a prize. Two weeks later, the new BBTC Food Pantry is now stocked with nearly 2,000 items, Director Jodi Tillman said. The winning program was the welding program, which brought in an average of 14 items per student. Last week, the winners received a pizza party for their efforts, she said. Tillman said the school hopes to keep the pantry stocked and that donations from the community are welcome. Additionally, those attending the upcoming Dinner Under the Pines scholarship event planned Friday, Oct. 19, are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items. Attendees will earn an extra door prize ticket for each item donated. BBTC welding students are pictured with instructors Tim Brown and Cecil Gainey. A-8 Perry News-Herald September 21-22, 2018 Shady Grove News By FLORRIE BURROUGHS Ceebrating Ben Fergusons 4th birthday Complete with water slide, Ben Fergusons birthday party was a refreshing event on Saturday, Aug. 31, at Shady Grove Community Park. Ben is a little boy who lights up the room when he comes in. He is well known and much loved by all. Happy Birthday Ben! 10 years As I am writing, and I place the date (Sept. 7, 2018) on the top of this page, I am very aware that on this day 10 years ago, my life changed in such a dramatic way. The love that I claimed as always and forever was gone when my husband of 34 years passed away. Joe had been battling cancer for almost a year, although we did not know what was wrong. Once we got the diagnosis, my prayer was that it not take him from me. But, God had other plans. On that day 10 years ago, I lost my best friend, my greatest supporter and one who loved me unselshly. And I still grieve for him. I have written about him before, so you may know that he was a great man in my eyes. Being a widow is a bit difcult, at least for me. I am blessed to have my sister, also a widow. We keep each other company and enjoy spending time together. Here comes Fall Fall is literally creeping in, isnt it? These days are just a bit cooler, and morning glories are cascading over the fences along the road. I think they are so pretty. I have two roses that popped up in my little ower garden, and it delights me that they came up voluntarily. Pretty soon there will be all sorts of fall owers on the drive from my house to my sons house. Come on Fall! This has been a hot and wet summer. Upcoming events The Shady Grove Citizens Council is looking for items for the annual auction, planned Saturday, Oct. 20. If you have something to donate, please contact Claire Hatcher at (850) 2535120. Your items can be picked up. All donations are tax deductible, and you will be given a receipt. At its next meeting, the Shady Grove Citizens Council will be receiving nominations for new ofcers, chairman, vice chair, secretary and three nance committee members. Thats all for now, Lord willing, Ill see you back here soon. Autumn is apple-picking season, and many farmers markets, grocery stores and even roadside apple stands are chock-full of delicious apples this time of year. That makes fall the perfect time to whip up some apple-inspired foods. This recipe for Elsies Stewed Apples from Laurey Mastertons The Fresh Honey Cookbook (Storey) requires a tad more eort than traditional applesauce recipes, but the extra work is well worth it in the end. When shopping for apples in advance of preparing this recipe, avoid apples that have a mealy texture, as well as those that are overly sweet.Elsies Stewed ApplesServes 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled cored and cut int o thick slices 1 cup honey, pr eferably sage honey 1 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and saut until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still rm; you dont want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
