By ANGELA M. CASTELUCCI Managing Editor Amanda Mandy Hale was left with a brood of children still in their tender years when her husband, Henry, died in a Union prison camp. Like so many before her, the young widow stood strong and carved out a life for herself and her family by working the farm she and her husband had established in the Cabbage Grove area in the 1850s. When it came time for her nal rest at the age of 70, Hale was buried in the cemetery that sheltered so many other farming pioneers who were her neighbors and friends. The methamphetamine seizure is now the largest in the countys history, coming less than a month after a 1.2-pound seizure of ice with a street value of $40,000 by the Taylor County Sheriffs Ofce (TCSO) on Aug. 23. The latest seizure occurred during the execution of a search warrant Aug. 28 at 505 West Leon Street. The estimated street value of the drugs is more than $200,000. Oscar Ray Thomley II, 27, was arrested at the home and charged with capital trafcking of methamphetamine, capital trafcking in heroin, possession of cannabis with intent to sell and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell (synthetic). He is being held without bond. If convicted, he could face a mandatory minimum 25-year prison sentence on the heroin possession alone. I have never seen this much heroin in this county. Until this seizure, the most weve encountered was one arrest where the suspect had 14 grams of the drug and that was unusual on its own. Typically wed see maybe a gram, PPD Capt. Instead of requiring 5% across-the-board cuts from all departments and each constitutional ofcers budget, county commissioners opted to balance the budget by requesting all departments cut their budgets by 2.5% and pulling the remaining $342,517 from cash reserves. As of Thursday, Sept. 13, County Human Resources Director Marsha Durden was still awaiting two nal evaluations before compiling results to present to the full board. The ongoing delay has prompted the board to recently adopt a new policy specifying when commissioners should complete the annual evaluation. INTENSIVE CARE RE-OPENEDBecause of what was called a temporary shortage of qualied nurses, the format of the intensive care unit at Doctors Memorial Hospital changed the week of Sept. 5, 1983. However, hospital spokesmen stressed that everything would be back to normal at the Perry hospitals intensive care unit as soon as more qualied nurses were found. The intensive care unit at the hospital did, however, continue to operate. But, because of the lack of registered nurses on staff, the patients were monitored from a nurses station. Joint Committee on Hospital Accreditation regulations called for 24-hour, roundthe-clock monitoring by RNs inside the second-oor rooms. As there were not enough RNs to go around, the status of the DMH intensive care unit changed, and the patients were monitored round the clock by nurses at a nurses station down the hall. STEINHATCHEE CLINIC CLOSEDAs one of the longterm effects of county budget cuts, the Taylor County Health Department was forced to close the Steinhatchee Health Clinic, according to Health Department Supervisor Pat Winburn. Health department nurses operated the Steinhatchee clinic the rst Monday of every month in an old facility near the bridge. Winburn said that health department ofcials needed to spend their Steinhatchee time at the school where 100 students needed regular state-supported check-ups. With only two nurses, we simply need to spend our time at the school, Winburn said. The nurse said that only 10-15 Steinhatchee residents regularly utilized the clinic, and that those people usually wanted blood pressure checks. BEATY RECEIVED 25-YEAR PINHilton B. A-4 Perry News-Herald September 14-15, 2018 September 14-15, 2018 Looking Back A glance at the past THE PERRY NEWS-HERALD September 14, 1983 Remember when... By ANTHONY L. WHITE anthonylamarwhite@yahoo.comI had a choice play for the Redskins or whip my Uncle Charles. Normally, I could avoid making choices I didnt want to make with the universally accepted response, Momma said I couldnt. Momma was my Grandma Doris and, around our house, what Momma said went without questioning. My relatives knew this as well as I did. My friends -the ones Id known longer than a day -knew it too. Every now and then my mother would challenge my grandmothers last say so when it came to me and my two brothers. That challenge usually lasted until my grandmother put her foot down and let my mother know who had the last word. The only other challenge to my grandmothers last word came from my Uncle Charles. Being the oldest child of my grandparents children naturally gave Charles some authority. After my grandfather passed when I was 11, Charles became the head man in charge. So, when my Uncle Charles showed up at my grandmothers house one afternoon and told me I was going to be playing Little League done deal. I enjoyed playing football on the dirt roads and on playing organized football, so I responded with the universally accepted, Momma said I couldnt. Well, Im going to be an assistant coach for the Redskins and I said you are, Charles responded. Momma, will you come in here? What do you want? my grandmother asked as she walked into the living room. Did you say Antmar couldnt play Little League football? Charles asked. Since my grandmother didnt believe in telling untruths, she responded, No, I didnt tell him that. But he doesnt have to play if he doesnt want to. He wants to, Charles diagnosed how I felt. Then to make sure I knew how I felt, he asked, Dont you? to say. That night, I turned to the only other option I had. I told my momma, Lois, what my Uncle waiting at the front door when he pulled in the yard. Antmars not playing on the Redskins, she informed him as he walked up on the porch. Oh yes he is, Charles responded. Where is he? Since I had been listening from the living room, I walked out on the porch. So, youre not going to play for the Redskins? he asked me. I dont want to, I answered. Well, you have a choice, Charles responded. Youre going to play for the Redskins or whip my behind. Which is it going to be? I looked at my mother. Hes not playing, she said. Ant! Charles raised his voice. Whats it going to be? You playing for the Redskins or me whipping you and your mommas behind? I could live with a good whipping from my my uncle (which she was prepared to do). So practice as a receiver and halfback for the Redskins. Drafted by the Redskins City Councilman Thomas Demps, Recreation Historical Society meets Monday

Lord, I thank you for letting me see another day. Thank you, Lawdy, that Im clothed in my right mind and got a reasonable portion of health. You have been good to me. Better than Ive been to myself. You put food on the table, clothes on my back and a roof over my head. The seniors prayer, same things today, 80-plus years later! Always remember You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think and twice as beautiful as youd ever imagined. Womens Day celebration Antioch M.B. Church will be celebrating annual Womens Day, Sunday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Tony O. Graham is pastor. The guest speaker will be Talmyra Williams with St. Stevens M.B. Church in Tallahassee, where the Rev. Arthus Stevens is pastor. The event will be hosted by Deaconess Laura Jenkins. Love out loud and on purpose: Thats what friends are for Fortitude is a good word. It means something good in every era. Fortitude is about strength and a stick-to-it attitude. Its the quality of a true friend who will hold on tight and refuse to let go, even when situations between you are unfavorable. Fortitude is about hanging around and hanging on when friendship has failed. Its about the unselsh way a friend will be there for support when a friends strength has failed or is weakened. Remember the Old Testament story of Moses and the Israelites ghting the Amalekites? As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites would win; but if he let his hands drop, theyd lose. It didnt take long for Moses to get tired. So two of his friends his brother Aaron and his friend Hur held up Moses hand when he no longer had the strength. Thats what true friends do! They hold up our hands when the battles of life get too difcult, and they stay beside us if we allow them to, giving us their unwavering support, love and encouragement. The truth is, we all do some pretty silly things, say things that dont make sense, say things that shouldnt be said and make some bad choices in our lives -every single one of us. No one is exempt, but its relevant that we remember how important friendship is! Whatever it is that we do, its not worth losing friendship over! We all need forgiveness at one time or another. Thats why we need friends with fortitude. Give a friend a hug today. --Excerpts from Hugs for Girlfriends by Phillis Boultinghouse. Given to me by one of my many friends in 2008. Forgive someone who has wronged you. Try saying Im sorry when you ought to. Tell a child how great they are. Sing a song about Jesus to yourself. Keep a promise. Call someone just to say hello. Try listening more than talking. Stand up for what you believe in. Thank God for His beautiful creation. Encourage someone who is feeling down. Cherish today as if it were your last one. Breakfast has long since been dubbed the most important meal of the day. While some might dispute that distinction, theres no disputing that a delicious breakfast can be a great way to begin a day. Freshness can go a long way toward making breakfast something special. For example, fresh peaches make this recipe for Peach Bruschetta with Blue Cheese from Christopher Hirsheimers The San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmers Market Cookbook (Chronicle Books) something to savor. The dish also works as an appetizer and can be made with nectarines.Peach Bruschetta with Blue CheeseServes 4 4 slices country bread 2 peaches Extra-virgin olive oil for brushing 1 pound blue cheese, gorgonzola or Blue Castello cheese Preheat the broiler. Arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet, slip under the broiler and toast, turning once, until golden brown on both sides. This should take only a few minutes. While the bread is toasting, halve the peaches lengthwise, pit them and then peel each half. Cut each half lengthwise into 1-inch-thick slices, keeping the shape of each half intact. When the bread is ready, remove from the broiler and brush each slice on both sides with olive oil. Spread one-fourth of the cheese on each slice of warm bread, place a sliced peach half on top, and serve. Heres How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! CLUES ACROSS CLUES DOWN Weekend Playground Peach Bruschetta with Blue Cheese Enjoy a refreshing breakfast From the Recipe Book A word you might not have heard...
