By CAITLYN BURCHETT Contributing Writer On the rst and third Saturday of each month, food pantry volunteers gather at First United Methodist Church to extend helping hands to a community in need, providing both physical and spiritual food to some 80 to 120 families. Each head bows as Dan Anderson leads the gathering in prayer, giving thanks for a new day and new blessings, and a commonly whispered prayer ripples throughout the room: Thank you God for food to put on the table tonight. Kristy Anderson, deputy director of Taylor County Emergency Management Services with the Taylor County Sheriffs Ofce (TCSO), has organized the multi-church food pantry with her husband, Dan Anderson, for the past eight years since taking over from another volunteer couple. As economic times have worsened, the Andersons have found it difcult to keep the food pantry stocked. Times are getting tougher, groceries are getting more expensive that is why we are asking for more help. We just know there is a need and we are going to help, Kristy said. According to Linda Pinson, an 11-year volunteer, the need for a food pantry has grown exponentially throughout the years due to a lack of local employment options. There are a lot of people that depend on the food pantry as supplemental food. Food stamps, if they even get food stamps, are not meant to be the total food for that month, Linda explained. A lot of people will even give up the medications that they desperately need to have food. Kevin Payne, a local patron, said he would be lost without the food pantry, as his family has come to depend on the bimonthly supplements. I would not know which way to go, Payne said when asked what he would do if the food pantry were to close its doors. It helps me a lot. Some days we dont have food, and the food pantry helps my family out with food and clothes, Payne continued. Many of the patrons said the food pantry provides stability for the community in the midst of economic hardships. Amanda Weatherly suffered a stroke in June and has had to rely on a walker to get around for almost three months. We struggle to put food on the table with me not working, Weatherly said. I would not have much food if it were not for the food pantry, fellow patron Ula Mae said, motioning to her cart containing a few loaves of bread, juice and non-perishable items. While the number of families in need has grown, local contributions to the food pantry have decreased, making lining the shelves with enough food a challenging task that threatens to shut down the multi-church food pantry. The city is now waiting for the county to approve a similar agreement with FDOT -assuming ownership of a .7-mile portion that runs from the city limits to Wright Road. In return, FDOT will take over ownership of Wright Road from the county. (Please see related story.) The citys action came at its regular meeting last week and initially met resistance from council members Venita Woodfaulk and Shirlie Hampton. Both declined to vote in favor of the agreement, and the issue was tabled until a full council could consider the measure, as Councilman Alan Hall was not available to meet until after 7 p.m. that night. (The council meeting was held the same day as the Primary Election, when Hall had previously stated he would be waving signs until the polls closed.) When the item was rst considered, City Manager Bob Brown explained that the agreement called for the city to maintain the road and agree to never close it permanently. They (FDOT) will basically be rerouting Highway 221 down Wright Road to U.S. Highway 19, then back down to Hampton Springs Avenue (which turns into Highway 27). So this is bypassing District 2 from 221? Hampton asked. There are businesses Please see page 2County commissioners expressed some reservations Tuesday night over an agreement reached in January that would include the county assuming ownership and maintenance of a portion of Hwy. 221 in exchange with the state taking over maintenance of Wright Road. Commissioners were apparently confused by the boundaries of what portion of Hwy. 221 (Jefferson Street) they would be responsible for in the future. Some commissioners expressed reservations about the scope of the project when considering the agenda item to consider approval of roadway transfer agreement and supporting resolution between State of Florida Department of Transporttion and Taylor County for State Road 55. The county commission previously approved the ownership transfer at a Jan. 17, 2018, meeting, but stalled Tuesday when presented with an ofcial agreement to sign a resolution that needed to be passed in order for the City of Perry to move forward with a downtown canopy project (see related story). The approved transfer would convey ownership of Wright Road (1.346 miles) in exchange for an estimated .7-mile section of Hwy. 221/Jefferson Street (SR 55) from the city limits north to the south end of the intersection of Wright Road and Hwy. 221. County Attorney Conrad Bishop opened discussion on the topic by expressing some reservations about the agreement containing provisions about any legal venue being held in Leon County, as well County balks at Wright Road, Jefferson transfer It is a scenario everyone hopes will never come true, but one the school district and emergency responders must be prepared for -an active shooter on a school campus. The Taylor County School District has announced it will hold a live active shooter drill Monday, Sept. 17, at the Taylor County High School from 7 a.m. to noon. All roads near and around the school will be blocked off, and the campus will be closed to the public. This is a teachers planning day, so no students will be on campus, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Danny Glover Jr. said. All law enforcement, county and city re departments, our local hospital and Emergency Medical Services will participate. All school administrators will be involved, as well as all high school teachers. There will be actors (JROTC cadets who have parental permission to participate in the drill) in full make-up playing wounded people. The police will be using blanks, and there will be a lot of loud noise. And I thank God I am a grandparent. Saying grace...a good reminder A visiting pastor was attending a mens breakfast in Ohio farm county. He asked one of the impressive older farmers in attendance to say grace that morning. After all were seated, the older farmer began: Lord, I hate buttermilk. The pastor opened one eye and wondered to himself where this was going. Then the farmer loudly proclaimed, Lord, I hate lard. Now the pastor was overly worried. However, without missing a beat, the farmer prayed on, And Lord, you know I dont care much for raw white our. Just as the pastor was ready to stand and stop everything, the farmer continued, But Lord, when you mix em all together and bake em up, I do love fresh biscuits. So Lord, when things come up we dont like, when life gets hard, when we just dont understand what you are sayin to us, we just need to relax and wait till you are done mixin, and probably it will be somethin even better than biscuits. Prayer focus Please keep these friends in your prayers: Sherry Baskin Wiggins (Marshalls Rehab), Christine Anderson, Deborah Holland, Beverly Richardson, Maxine Hill, Juanita Scott and Ruth Baskins. In bereavement Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of Emma Jackson in the loss of her grandson, Wes Jackson; the families and friends of the late Brenton Anthony Palmer; the families and friends of the late Charles Parker Jr.; and the families and friends of the late Henry Bryant Sr. What fruit do you bear? A tree is known by the fruit it bears. Some believers join the church to belong or be a part of a group doing something and going places. Some believers join the church as converts (changed) to be converted to a better way of life. They have a great need for Christ in their life. They earnestly want a change in their lifestyle. They want to abolish the old life and take on the new become a new creature in Christ. They need Christ in their life to implement this change. Paul directed the Colossians to put off (stop doing) their old sinful nature of living and begin living their lives according to the commandments and doctrines of Jesus Christ. In order to fulll this, the believers must practice good habits, good characteristics and bury the old sinful ways of themselves. One important point Paul stressed -we cannot do this for ourselves. Only Jesus can cleanse us from our sins! We must seek Gods help. We must learn through the knowledge of Christ (reading and studying the Bible, the Word.) When we begin to study, learn and practice living the Word, our lives change, our thoughts change and the way we treat each other changes. Christians must apply Gods words to our lives. The world, the sinful world, will know you are a Christian without asking! We must exemplify Christ and Christlike character. We cant be Christ-like on the inside and a devil on the outside! We are Christ-ians! All the time inside and out. Paul concludes by saying, We are always to act as Christs representatives. Our Christ-like character must show. Jesus said, If I be lifted up from the earth, Id draw all men unto me and the world will know you are my disciples by the love you have for one another. The power of laughter (in the hands of God) Laughter is good medicine. Regardless of how bad youre feeling, if you can remember something funny, something that youve done that seems silly or foolish and laugh about it, you will feel better. A heart lled with laughter is a treasure to enjoy with a friend. I will always be glad that Ive had God and laughter in my life from an early age. Believe me, laughter and learning to laugh at myself and my mistakes have really been a powerful factor. I recall the girls and I laughing as I squeezed to get into my girdle on Sundays. Fat? No, I wasnt fat...because I wore a girdle! Try very hard not to take life so seriously. After all, my Grandma Mary said, By the time you learn how to live, its time to get outta here. We need to make a concerted effort to enjoy the journey of life as much as possible and leave a beautiful memory full of love and laughter. Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone. (Ella Wheeler Wilcox) Thank you Lord for the gift of laughter. Equip us to trust You in new ways and to greater depths. Help us to release our fears and worries and remind us that You and Your spirit are always with us. Be the companion we seek when we struggle with loneliness. Thank You for all Your blessings and the joy of friendship and companionships near and far. We love You, Lord Jesus. We praise You and magnify Your holy name. In the powerful name of Jesus. Amen. EMTs UPSET AMBULANCE FARMED OUTA Jacksonville rm was awarded a three-year contract to operate the Taylor County Ambulance Service, much to the dismay of many of the local ambulance workers. The Taylor County Commission voted unanimously to award the $142,000 annual contract to Ambulance Service Inc. (ASI) of Jacksonville. Ambulance Service Inc. was the only bidder to respond to the county commissions advertisement for an outside rm to come in and operate the debtriddled Taylor County service. The contract was planned to begin Oct. 1, 1983. The service would be moved out of its (at the time) present location and operated out of a trailer located near the county jail, according to Commission Chairman Edwin Hendry. A large group of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) were at the commission meeting to try to convince the commissioners to put off making a decision on the ambulance service for some time. The group, represented by EMT Steve Jolley and attorney Stephen Murphy, wanted the commissioners to reject the ASI bid and ask for new bids, which could give the local ambulance service employees time to charter themselves as a nonprot organization and bid on operating the ambulance service themselves. By ANTHONY L. WHITE anthonylamarwhite@yahoo.comBecoming my grandparents Theres no point in asking Flo for help. She can help save me money when I bundle home and auto insurance, but theres nothing she can do to keep me from becoming my grandparents. I was going to ask my doctor for help, but a couple of friends who have been diagnosed with the same disorder said they already asked and there is no pill or vaccine to alleviate the symptoms or slow their progression. years ago when a car pulled in the driveway and the driver blew the horn. I was about to get up and go to the door when the malady hit me. I wasnt expecting anyone, so I looked around the living room to see who would jump up and run to the door. Then I remembered I was the only one in the house. So, I sat back down without bothering to look out the window to see who was outside. I was feeling my forehead with the back of my hand, making sure I hadnt come down with a fever when I thought about my grandmother. One of my grandmothers pet peeves was people driving up to the house and blowing the car horn instead of getting out. The only time this was okay was when she was expecting someone to pick her up. If she wasnt expecting anyone, she would continue doing whatever she was doing without bothering to look out of the window to see who was blowing the horn. Momma, one of us would yell from another room in the house. Who is that outside? I dont know, she would respond. Let them get out like theyre supposed to instead of blowing the horn. Who does that? Well, I do. Sometimes. But, that still doesnt mean its okay to pull in my driveway and blow the horn if Im not expecting you. (OMGThat even sounded like my grandmother!) my condition has steadily progressed. Back in the day, I would make my bed, shower, eat breakfast, get dressed and be out of the door in 20 minutes. Today, my morning routine -much like my grandmothers -requires me to get up two hours earlier than I used to so I can get myself together before I can get out the door on time. When I watch television and listen to music, Ive started to prefer the oldie goldies, just like my grandparents did. I used to help make all the fuss around the house, but like my grandparents, Ive gotten to where I cant stand a little fuss, let alone a lot, anymore. And its other little things. Like when I read the newspaper -I used to start with the front page. Now, I read all the headlines on all the pages before I start reading the articles. And, I dont always start on the front page. My grandmother used to do this. The symptoms dont end there. During the past year, Ive developed what is perhaps the most obvious sign that Im becoming my grandparents. Nodding off was something my grandmother and grandfather did two or three times a day. Lately, Ive started taking naps and even falling asleep in front of the television. I used to be a person who never took naps and never, ever fell asleep watching television. Now, it doesnt matter how much sleep I get or how rested I feel, nodding off in the middle of Zzzzzzzz.
