Assistant State Attorney John Weed asked defendant Cordell Washington as he testied on his own behalf for the 2015 murder of fellow inmate Steven Benson. It was this simple question that brought an abrupt halt to the court proceedings as Judge Greg Parker declared a mistrial because the question evidently violated Washingtons right to a fair trial -delaying the three-year-old murder case another four months. Weeds inquiry was immediately met with an objection from defense attorney Elise Blair Yates before Washington could reply. Judge Greg Parker requested all attorneys approach the bench to consult with him, then released the jury to discuss the matter in open court. With jurors out of the room, and an increasingly tense courtroom waiting, Yates began, Based on that last question, I believe the states attempt to shift the burden to Mr. Washington to prove that he is innocent is not standard. We ask for a mistrial. Your Honor, when I asked that question, just as soon as it came out of my mouth, I realized, Weed concurred. Mistrial is granted -unfortunately. I am When former TCI inmate Cordell Washington took the stand Thursday known as The Bloods. While two out of every three registered voters did not cast a vote on Tuesday, Taylor County did have signicantly better turnout than it did four years ago in the 2014 mid-term election. A total of 4,194 local voters cast a ballot in Tuesdays Aug. 28, 2018, Primary Election, reecting 35% of the countys current total of 11,993 active registered voters. Meanwhile, some 7,799 local voters (65%) failed to cast a ballot. However, local voters were much more energized this year than they were four years ago in 2014, when voter turnout was only 19.42% and over 80% of the countys eligible voters did not cast a ballot. Of the 4,194 who did make their voices heard this year, 49% (2,051) did so by traveling to their respective precincts to vote on election day, while 32% (1,342) opted to vote by mail and 19% (801) voted early at the Supervisor of Elections ofce on Hwy. 19. It is awesome to see citizens taking an interest in who their representation is, Supervisor of Elections Dana Southerland said. The only way to make sure your voice is heard is to vote. Every vote does make a difference....and your vote is your voice! For detailed precinct-byprecinct results, see graph on page A-10. Hall defeats Williams for second council term Incumbent District 4 City Councilman Alan C. Hall won a second term in ofce on Tuesday, earning 57.26% of the total 268 votes cast to defeat challenger Mary Williams, who received 42.54% of the ballots cast. Hall received a total of 154 votes 40 more than Williams, who collected 114 votes. 65% of eligible voters fail to cast vote Pam Feagle Danny Lundy Alan Hall Ward KetringPlease see page 10 Visibility agitated and shaking with emotion, Perry City Councilwoman Shirlie Hampton called out fellow council member Mike Demings for what she described as alleged lack of support for the black community -according to Hampton -in a shocking outburst at the close of Tuesday nights meeting. After banging on the table in apparent frustration, Hampton launched into a tirade accusing Deming of not supporting city initiatives geared toward black residents. Every d--n time something comes up in the black community, you got something to say about it ,and I dont see no reason why we cant help out in our community. You do it every time. Theres nothing wrong with us helpingwe have bands and everything out here, but nothing geared toward the black community, and we just sit here and we take it and we take it and we take it. Im tired of it. Its time for us to do something in the black community, Hampton said. Deming did not respond to Hamptons outburst, and Mayor David Sullivan tried to intervene, saying to Hampton, We need to calm down. The eruption followed a line of questioning raised by Deming during the Items of Interest portion of the meeting regarding the coming years budget, prompted by an anticipated request from the Taylor County Leadership Council. (Representatives were on the agenda to give the council an update, but canceled the appearance prior to the meeting.) The budget is kind of tied down right now, is it not? Deming asked Finance Director Penny Staffney. I dont think youll have any contingency, she said. So if we give money to somebody out of city funds, it comes out of just the general fund. Its not budgeted. We would have to gure out where it comes from, Deming said. The Leadership Council went before the county (last week) asking for $10,000 and got $25,000. City residents pay county taxes as well, so my thought is they (city residents) have already paid, Deming said. City Manager Bob Brown explained that while city residents do pay county taxes, It would be hard to say what portion (of the money the county gave to the Leadership Council) was from city taxpayers. As Deming and Staffney were discussing the parameters the city set several years ago regarding Hampton lashes out at Deming Please see page 12 the rain, she said, referring to the stormy skies Representatives with the Taylor County Leadership Council (TCLC) approached the Taylor County Commission last week asking for $10,000 to help cover a portion of the costs needed to renovate bathrooms at Jerkins Community Center. Instead, when they left, TCLC volunteers had a pledge for $30,000 from the county to cover the entire project. Leadership Council Vice Chair Ernestine Mitchell spoke to the commission at its Tuesday, Aug. 21, meeting, asking that the board consider fullling a pledge they made back in 2016 at the request of then Commissioner Pat Patterson. In her nal full meeting as a county commissioner in November 2016, Patterson called on her fellow board members to support the effort to improve the restrooms at Jerkins Community Center. At the time, the leadership council was applying for a $12,500 state historical preservation grant, which would require a 100% match. Patterson asked the board to consider allocating $10,000 in its 2017-18 scal year to fund most of the match, with the TCLC providing the rest. In 1970, Jerkins High School closed, but prior to that, as a child, I grew up under the leadership and the teaching of the teachers at Jerkins High School, Patterson said at the 2016 meeting. That is where I got my start in education. And Jerkins High School, Taylor Leadership Council asks county for $10,000, gets $30,000Please see page 12 Three Taylor County students were arrested in two separate incidents last week -bringing the total number of students arrested to seven in just the rst two weeks of school. SPEEDING STUDENTSThe Perry Police Department stepped up its patrol of certain areas of the city due to complaints about students from Taylor County High School who were leaving campus during lunchtime, according to city ofcials. City Manager Bill Noonan said that residents of the area of Church and Center Streets near Old Dixie Highway had been complaining that students on lunch break speed down the road near their homes on their way to South Jefferson Street. Noonan said that an accident was narrowly avoided Aug. 26, 1983, and that local police would patrol the area in an effort to keep the students from speeding. POLICE COULD GIVE BREATH TESTAlmost every member of the local police force became certied to give blood alcohol (Breathalyzer) tests to suspected drunk drivers, according to Perry Police Department ofcials. Eight members of the squad completed a 40hour course at North Florida Junior College in Breathalyzer operation. The ofcers who completed the course were Sgts. N.W. YOUTH PROGRAM PUSHEDBy hiring youths between the ages of 16 and 24 who come from economically disadvantaged families, local employers could claim up to $4,500 per employee off their federal income tax, according to an emmisary from Gov. Bob Grahams ofce. Donny MacKenzie was in Perry to tell local business people about the Targeted Jobs Tax Credit (TJTC) program. MacKenzie spoke to the board of directors of the Perry-Taylor County Chamber of Commerce, and told them that any size business was able to participate and reap the tax benets of the program. Additionally, individuals could hire such youths and take the tax credit off their personal federal income tax. For instance, if a homeowner were to hire an economically disadvantaged youth to do yard or housework, that homeowner could deduct the youths wages off his federal income tax. The goal of the program was to get the 87,000 unemployed young people back to work. However, the Bulldogs were again young, made up primarily of juniors and sophomores. Physically, the 1983 squad seemed to be stronger and bigger than the previous years team. TCHS returned eight starters on both offense and defense. Head Coach Elmer Coker said the 1983 teams offensive look would be different. We are going to get away from the option this year and run out of a Wing-T formation, he said. Returning at quarterback was junior Jerry Brown. A-2 Perry News-Herald August 31-September 1, 2018 August 31-September 1, 2018 Looking Back Remember when... By ANTHONY L. WHITE anthonylamarwhite@yahoo.comA long days night I was ready to put one foot in front of the other and turn in my walking papers. It was 1989-1990 and I was getting ready to say good-bye to my job as a repulp operator at Buckeye. I disliked the midnight hours. I hated the heat. And, more than anything, I dreaded rolling broke, which was pulp or paper that had fallen off the dryer rolls before it had been completely dried. Even though the list of things I liked about the job far outnumbered the things I disliked, the three things I disliked were pushing me toward the door. I had spent nearly a month trying to grandmother and D.L. Williams that I was quitting when Sandra MoydTurner walked through the door. I know youre thinking about quitting, D.L. announced, but you cant quit until you train Sandra. Why cant you train her? I asked. You trained me. Youre training her, D.L. reiterated. I was about to object when Sandra walked into the repulp area. Ant, I cant believe were going to be working together, Sandra said. Were going to have so much fun. I forced a smile and said, We sure are. I didnt tell Sandra or D.L., but I wasnt going to change my plans about quitting because I predicted Sandra would last all of three weeks. Sandra not to follow my lead on everything. Ive been knowing you for years, so I know to do as you say, but not as you do, Sandra admitted. The training began with me showing Sandra how to drive a forklift. Two minutes later, after I ran into wall and turned over a few bales of paper, Sandra asked, Am I supposed to run into walls and turn things over? Next, I showed her how to make and tie bales of strap paper then stack the bales in the storage area. Finally, I showed her how to add the bales of strap paper back into the pulp making process by loading them in the repulp machine. When we were done with these tasks, Sandra asked me, What do we do next? We try to stay awake until the sun comes up, I answered. How do we do that? she asked. We sing and dance, I joked, not knowing Sandra would take me seriously. But she did. So, during the next few hours, Sandra and I composed songs. We choreographed dance routines. And we decorated our work area by making posters with encouraging phrases like, You cant get to better days unless you make it through the night. By 5 a.m., Sandra and I had sung every song we knew. We had danced until our feet hurt. And we couldnt hold our eyes open to read the posters that were supposed to encourage us to stay awake. the horizon, we were both ready to call it quits. But we didnt. A few months later, after Sandra had completed her probationary period, I did quit. After 25 years on the job, its safe to say that Sandra (with my help, LOL) made it through the night and found those better days. The Shady Grove Citizens Council is responsible for the cleaning, and the cleaning fees are then paid to the council. The council purchases needed items for the center, i.e. tables, chairs, etc. from these fees. Celebrating with family The old ways were better! I declare it. There is a sweet nostalgia when I remember the things we did when I was growing up on the farm. They say you cant go back home again, and I suppose that is true, but it would be nice to go back to when families spent time together. I really miss that. We rarely have large family gatherings, but sometimes it just happens as it did this past Saturday night when we honored my sister-in-law Pat Rowell on her 75th birthday. The community center was decorated beautifully, with about 65 family and friends enjoying the evening. Pat and Auleys daughter, Darla Zorn, surprised them with a visit from Knoxville and prepared the beautiful party that we all enjoyed so much. Happy Birthday Pat! Its back to AWANA AWANA (Approved Workers Are Not Ashamed) classes begin again on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with classes for ages two through high school and a Bible study class for those not in the AWANA program. Bus transportation will be provided for Boys & Girls Club members who have their parents permission to ride. Detour ahead (still) The Donaldson Bridge (Econna River Bridge) on Ira Smith Road (SR14-A) Reconstruction Project still has trafc rerouted. It seems the rain has slowed the project and it will be a bit longer to completion than originally stated. I have been unable to get anyone from FDOT to give me a report. Most of the Shady Grove community will be glad when the detour signs come down. Thats all I have for now. A-6 Perry News-Herald August 31-September 1, 2018 Religion Our six most dangerous enemies Every person on earth is afraid of something. Most fears are inherited. Some are created. A few are the products of our environment and our upbringing. Once you identify yours, you can begin to learn how to cope, contain or abolish them. Its a lifetime process. As you read them, take some quality time and analyze yourself! Youll be surprised! These are not all of our fears -just six basic fears: 1. The fear of poverty (an enemy of mankind). 2. The fear of old age (becoming dependent/ losing ones self). 3. The fear of ill health (becoming destitute). 4. The fear of loss of love of someone (chronic insecurity). 5. The fear of criticism (desire to be accepted, etc.). 6. The fear of death (ignorant to what living is all about. Not knowing!). God has given us many choices, but where or how we are born is not one. Also when, where or how we die is another. But, he let us know it is appointed unto us to die and after death the judgment. --Excerpts from Laws of Success by Napoleon Hill Wise words The only lasting favor that the parent may confer upon a child is that of helping the child to help himself. If you want to get more out of your life, you must put more in your life. Demand yourself to do more. Self-condence: If you think you can, you can! If you think youll lose, youve lost. For out of the world we nd success begins with a fellows will. Its all in the state of mind. Control your positive thinking. You can do it if you think you can. Think about it. The Lord gave us our relatives and allowed us a chance to choose our friends. Enroll in the school of life...dont just exist, live! Enthusiasm is the mainspring of the soul. Keep it wound up and you will never be without power to get what you actually need. Gods blessing We salute the achievements of Michelle Hughes Linnere, daughter of Lawrence and Betty Hughes.
