Four people are in custody and a fth suspect was being actively sought Thursday in connection with what is believed to be the singlelargest methamphetamine seizure in the history of Taylor County. A case that began just before midnight Wednesday with a domestic violence complaint, escalated to shots being red as deputies arrived on scene at a Foley Cut-Off Road residence. Over the next several hours Thursday morning, more than 20 ofcers from multiple agencies and several different K-9 units swarmed the area as part of a tense manhunt and foot chase for two suspects that spanned several square miles from Foley Cut-Off across Hwy. 27 East through several residential yards and nally ended in the wooded area located between Hwy. 27 and San Pedro Road. Many details were unavailable as of press time, but Taylor County Sheriffs Ofce (TCSO) ofcials were able to conrm the identities of four of the ve suspects and the fact they had seized what is estimated to be a pound of ice (methamphetamine) with an estimated street value over $45,000. 5 Friday 50%Saturday89 72 Sunday90 72 60% 91 73Index Looking Back . ......... CASTELUCCI Managing Editor Noticeably thinner and with a thousand-yard stare, Garrett Arrowood sat silently through nearly two full days of court hearings while attorneys argued over evidence presented during his rst degree murder trial nearly two years ago. Contact with his family was kept to a minimum, save for occasional overthe-shoulder glances and half smiles when he walked into courtroom. He showed little reaction as lawyers debated his whereabouts during the time surrounding the murder of his aunt, Shelly Strickland -a murder for which he is currently serving a life sentence. His expression didnt change when his rst cousin, Jessica Strickland Howard (the victims daughter) took the stand to be questioned regarding a pill organizer his attorneys maintain is a key piece of evidence that could merit him a new trial. But, it was following the testimony of his former defense attorney, Baya Harrison, that Arrowood appeared to slip the tight rein of his emotions. Harrison, as he was waiting to step down from the witness stand, spoke to Arrowood as he passed by on the way back to the holding cell. Arrowoods initial response was inaudible. When Harrison evidently asked him how he was doing, a seemingly bitter edge colored Arrowoods response, Im doing bad. Thank YOU for your service. The brief exchange was off the record, but captured the tone of proceedings conducted with laser focus by his team of attorneys attempting to discredit Arrowoods initial defense at trial, to highlight discrepancies in evidence, to argue a different time of death for the victim and to establish that Arrowood was more than 100 miles away when the murder occurred. Though only two attorneys sat at the table with Arrowood David Collins of Monticello and David Finger of Miami Lisa Arrowood, the defendants mother and victims sister, had just as large of a presence during the proceedings. Seated closely behind the defense table, she passed forward documents, directed Commission honors Collins on his retirement Taylor County Commissioners honored retired Veteran Services Ofcer Joe Collins on Tuesday, following a 13year career serving local veterans. The board approved a resolution recognizing Collins service to the community and its veterans. Several commissioners, as well as members of the audience, took the opportunity to praise Collins and share stories of how he had helped friends and family members. After County Attorney Conrad Bishop read the resolution aloud to the room, Commission Chair Pam Feagle asked Collins if he wished to speak. Collins thanked the commission for the honor, noting that he was retiring in order to take care of his wife, who is in hospice care. Ive been through a lot of things in my life, Collins said. I was in the military for nine and a half years. Some of you dont know this, but I was a federal agent for a number of years. And then, I was in the medical eld. In fact, Pam was a student of mine. Her mother was a student of mine. So, Ive known most of the board members, and its always been a pleasure. I cant say enough about the veterans, he said. After formally receiving the bid earlier this month, the commission handed the bid over to a bid committee consisting of: Assistant County Administrator LaWanda Pemberton, County Extension Ofcer Clay Olson and Building Ofcial Danny Griner, who returned with a recommendation and a contract drafted by County Attorney Conrad Bishop at the boards Tuesday, Aug. 21, meeting. ANDERSON PLANNED TO HEAD HOSPITALThe Doctors Memorial Hospital (DMH) Community Advisory Board voted to recommend William H. Anderson at the time the current vice-president for support services at Tallahassee Memorial Regional Medical Center, for the post of administrator of the local hospital. DMHs administrator, Mark Van Fleet resigned a week prior to take a similar post in Kansas City, Mo. Van Fleet announced that Anderson was Southeast Community Health Services, Inc.s administrative choice for his replacement. CRIME RATES JUMPED HEREDespite a statewide decrease in the number of reported crimes for the rst six months of 1983, the City of Perry and Taylor County both recorded an increase in the number of crimes reported. According to gures released by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), crimes increased 34 percent during the rst six months of 1983 as compared to the same period last year. The statewide average crime rate declined 9.6 percent, more than double the decrease reported in 1982, according to a release from FDLE Commissioner Robert Dempsey. The crimes included in the report were murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, breaking and entering, larceny and auto theft. EXTRA CLASSES PLANNED FOR TCHSTaylor County High School students caught in the grips of the RAISE bill had a way out, but it wasnt easy. The Taylor County District School Board gave Secondary Education Supervisor Lawrence Hughes the go-ahead to establish an after-school mathematics and science program that gave TCHS juniors the opportunity to earn three more math and science credits that were required for graduation in the 1984-85 school year. The RAISE bill designed by Gov. Bob Graham and the Florida Legislature in 1983 meant students would need more credits in math and science (three in each out of 22 required credits) in order to receive the basic high school diploma beginning in the 1984-85 school year. HUMPBACK BRIDGE ARRANGED TO FALLThe infamous Keaton Beach humpback bridge was to remain closed and destroyed as soon as possible, the Taylor County Commission decided Aug. 19, 1983. And as had been the case often in 1983, the commissioners decision was not very popular with at least on group of constituents. After an hour-long meeting Aug. 19 attended by about 35 people connected with the Keaton Beach area, the Commissioners remained unchanged in their desire to close what they considered to be an unsafe bridge. On one hand, there was the commissioners concern that the 35-year-old wood bridge was unsafe. They based their conclusion on the fact that both the State Bridge Inspector and the Road Department Director Richard Shefeld declared that the bridge was unsafe for vehicular trafc and should be closed. Conversely, Keaton Beach residents said the bridge wasnt that bad and that they needed it to get to their homes off the Keaton Beach channel. The meeting adjourned with the commissioners voting unanimously to keep the bridge closed. HOWARDS NAMED FARM FAMILYAs any farmer will tell you, farming is a full-time business with full-time headaches and full-time responsibilities. One Taylor County family was recognized for their agricultural efforts, even though they were involved in many things other than just farming. The Oscar Howard Jr. family of Athena was chosen as the Outstanding Farm Family for 1983 by a committee made up of local farmers. The Howards operated some 6,500 acres of land in the county, 6,000 of which was leased woodlands for grazing, with the rest in farm land. Oscar was better known to more Taylor County residents as the principal of Gladys Morse School, and at the time was entering his sixth year in that position. BIRTHSWilliam James Adkins Mr. and Mrs. Horace Adkins Sr. of Mayo were proud to announce the birth of a son, William James, born on Aug. 21 at 10:48 a.m. at Doctors Memorial Hospital. FUN IN THE SUNThe third annual Water Carnival was a big success with approximately 200250 youngsters attending. Most of the swimmers took home more prizes and coins found in the coin dive to the bottom of the pool than the $1 admission charged for them to take a shot at it. Carnival ofcials stressed that the event was not a money maker but a summers-end activity for the children before school started.A-4 Perry News-Herald August 24-25, 2018 August 24-25, 2018 Looking Back Remember when... By ANTHONY L. WHITE anthonylamarwhite@yahoo.comFrom the backseat Jacksonville has been one of my familys big-city destinations for as long as I can remember. My earliest memories of our family trips to Jacksonville were my grandmothers frequent visits to her Aunt Marie, who lived in a neighborhood of row houses not far from downtown. On the morning of our family trip, we would wake up before sunrise and eat breakfast. My grandmother would prepare packed lunches while we got dressed, and then we my two brothers, cousins and I, would climb in the backseat of my grandfathers car for the three-hour drive to Jacksonville. Im sure my grandparents got tired of answering the hundreds of questions we asked from the backseat once we pulled into Jacksonville, but at least they could answer them. Did they use helicopters to build the skyscrapers? What about the bridge? Why are the houses so close? Where did all these people come from? My grandfather drove while my grandmother answered the questions. They used cranes to build the skyscrapers and the bridges. The houses are close because they need a lot of houses for all these people and houses with yards take up a lot of space. And, most of the people were born here and the others come from just about everywhere. had learned something from my grandmothers answers. That was then. Last week, during a family trip to Jacksonvilles Adventure Island before school started, the niece and cousins in the backseat still asked questions about the size of buildings and bridges. Why did they build this bridge so high in the sky? one of them asked as we crossed the towering Dame Point cable bridge over the St. Johns River. So ships can sail under it, my uncle, the front-seat passenger, answered. boat? A bunch, was my response. We were easily handling the questions from the backseat until our unsuccessful search for a Churchs Chicken restaurant brought us near downtown. I knew the questions coming from the backseat were about to get harder when I saw the niece and cousins staring out the window at the people along the street. Why is that man sleeping on the sidewalk? one asked. Why he wont go home? Why is that man standing in the road holding a poster? one of the younger ones asked. What does it say? Can we stop and help them? another asked. I responded. He doesnt have a home. It says he needs help. I wish we could. my responses garnered puzzled looks and more questions from the backseat. Today, two weeks after our family trip, Im still searching for better answers to those questions from the backseat. A-5 Perry News-Herald August 24-25, 2018 Religion Friendship Baptist Church will hold Homecoming Sunday, Sept. 9, starting at 11 a.m. Pastor Ron Blair and the entire congregation invite the community to join them for special singing, testimonials and preaching by former pastor, Brother Ed Taylor. Lunch will be served and then services will reconvene at 2 p.m. for additional sermons and gospel music performances.Homecoming Sept. 9 at FriendshipJustice is-a-coming! We all want justice, but do we remember to give justice? Websters Dictionary denes justice as: the quality of being just; the principle or practice of just dealing (rectitude rightness in principles and conduct; correctness); integrity, uprightness (equitableness state of being equal or fair). The Apostle Paul addressed this issue many times in his message to Christians (Romans 12:19). Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Romans 12:21. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. Situations may not always work out in your favor, but God will reward you in due time. God wants us to respond to injustices in a Christ-like manner since He has given us the Holy Spirit to enable us to overcome, overlook and withstand the offenses of the world. Our season of joy is coming! Be patient! Prayer focus Please keep these friends in your prayers: Mary Alice Williams (Tallahassee Regional Hospital); the Rev. Dr. Robert Butler (Tallahassee); Ruth Monroe; Charlotte (Lora) Hugger; Weldon Raynard Robinson (Orlando); Johnny Blue; Delores (Billie) Jay; Mother Laura Taylor and family; Sarah Hall; the Rev. Robert Lee Thomas (Palm Coast); and Juanita Scott. In bereavement The families and friends of Mother Laura Taylor in the loss of her daughter Pricilla Taylor are in our thoughts. Worth repeating We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid. --Benjamin Franklin The Race Defeat! He lay there silently, a tear dropped from his eye, ( Theres no sense running anymore -three strikes Im out -why try? The will to rise had disappeared, all hope had ed away, ( so far behind, so error prone, closer all the way. Ive lost, so whats the use, he thought, Ill live with my disgrace. ( But then he thought about his dad, who soon hed have to face. ( Get up, an echo sounded low. Get up and take your place. ( You were not meant for failure here, get up and win that race. With borrowed will, Get up, it said, you havent lost at all, ( for winning is not more than this; to rise each time you fall. ( So, up he rose to run once more, and with a new commitment, ( he resolved that win or lose, at least he wouldnt quit. So far behind the others now, the most hed ever been, ( still he gave it all he had and ran as though to win. ( Three times hed fallen, stumbling. Three times he rose again. ( Too far behind to hope to win, he still ran to the end. They cheered the winning runner as he crossed, rst place; ( head high and proud and happy -no falling, no disgrace. ( But, when the fallen youngster crossed the line, last place, ( the crowd gave him the greater cheer for nishing the race. And even though he came in last with head bowed low, unproud, ( you would have thought hed won the race, to listen to the crowd. ( And to his dad he sadly said, I didnt do so well. ( To me, you won, his father said. You rose each time you fell. And now when things seem dark and hard and difcult to face, ( the memory of that little boy helps me in my own race. ( For all of life is like that race, with ups and downs and all. ( And all you have to do to win is rise each time you fall. Quit! Give up, youre beaten, they still shout in my face, ( but another voice within me says, Get up and win that race. --Author unknown Patricia Ann (Perkins) Prevatt Patricia Ann (Perkins) Prevatt also known as Momma, Ann, Ms. Pat and Ma Perkins of Keaton Beach, formerly of Preston, Ga., passed from this life unto the arms of the Heavenly Father Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018, at Big Bend Hospice in Tallahassee.
