Anderson Jr. became an instant father when he pledged his love at the altar to not only his bride, Lakeshia, but her two young children as well. Today, the Elder Pastor of Greater Grace Church of God -who has no biological children of his own -is known as Bonus Dad or Buddy to Zykerria, 12, Christian, 8, and serves as a father gure to many other youth in Perry. When the Lord told me that Lakeshia was my wife, I said, No, she cant possibly be. I never wanted any children, and the Lord said, You have children, Anderson said. I was scared at rst because of the decisions that I have made in my life. I am very strict on myself because of my mistakes. I battled with what do I say, what do I do? I didnt know how to be a dad, Anderson continued. Anderson said he wanted to make sure Zykerria and Christian knew he was not replacing their dads, but that he would be there to support, encourage and guide them as they navigated life. For the last couple of years on county property all along the Fenholloway River Road (Hampton Springs Road) we have seen all of the palmetto berries being robbed for several years in a row, Commissioner Jim Moody stated at the countys June 4 meeting. We have 130 acres down Hampton Springs Road around the Fenholloway and they are really blooming good right now, Moody said. There are in the owering stage now and from the looks of them, it is going to be a bumper crop this year. Last year, someone with 4 Rivers caught some of them and turned them in and conscated their berries, which they weighed and sold and sent us a check for them, Moody said. A-4 Perry News-Herald June 15-16, 2018 June 15-16, 2018 Looking Back BUCKLE UP On July 1, a new law went into effect which many young parents may have complained about, but which hopefully prevented a few tragedies. The law required that all children age four and under to wear some sort of child restraint device while driving in an automobile. It is very specic in its wording, and while older children are allowed to wear seat belts, younger children and infants must be in an approved safety seat while in a car or truck. The cost of these devices was not light. An infant seat could cost as much as $100. But that price was minuscule when compared to the cost of losing a life. The participants got free beer at the end of the race, courtesy of Miller Beer, but some of them started a bit sooner. WHITE anthonylamarwhite@yahoo.comPastor dinners There was no way around it. If you were a child in my grandmothers house, Sunday mornings meant you were going to church. That meant, unless the church doors didnt open, my brothers and I were in Sunday School at 10 oclock and church service at 11 oclock. Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church was a skip and a hop from our house, so we usually left the house walking two minutes before Sunday School began. At least one Sunday every other month, my trip to church was more than a 100-yard journey. My Uncle Walter, who was pastor of Mt. Nebo was also pastor of a church in Cross City, and I would occasionally go with him to church in Cross City. And our neighbor, the Rev. P.H., was pastor of a church in Georgia, and sometimes I would attend church with him. Going to church in Cross City was no different than going to church at home. I was related to half the congregation in church, and after church, we ate dinner at a family members house. So, unless we ate dinner at one of the other church sisters house, no one was trying pastor. However, attending church with the Rev. P.H. in Georgia was like being a judge in a competition of Cooking for the Pastor. Its funny what I remember about those trips with the Rev. P.H. I remember the Rev. P.H. driving, Cousin Fannie Lou, his wife, in the front seat, and me, their son, Bobby, and Koski in the back seat playing I Spy and Questions because there was no radio or handheld games to keep us occupied. I recall the hours it took us to get there because the Rev. P.H. always drove below the speed limit, but I dont recall the name of the town in Georgia we went to. I can still visualize the small church at the end of a dirt road in a rural farming community, but most of all, I can still taste those after-church dinners cooked for the pastor. We ate dinner at the home of an elderly lady, the Mother of the Church, more than we ate at other houses. She was a great cook, and, every pastor dinner she prepared consisted of two entrees always fried chicken and another or mustard greens, fresh peas, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, and cornbread, two desserts a cake and a cobbler, and a keg of homemade tea or lemonade. for a pastor, but her cornbread had to be created for the pastors boss. All the church sisters went out of their way on the Sunday the Rev. P.H. was having dinner at their house, but in the end, there was no competition over who won the Cooking for the Pastor competition. All the meals were appreciated, and all of them were blessed. But only one meal had the Mother of the Churchs cornbread, which much more. Courage is fear that has said en its prayers. Religion The Jars The preacher placed two identical jars on the table next to the pulpit. He quoted 1 Samuel 16:7 The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. These jars came from the same factory, were made from the same materials and could hold the same amount, but they are different, he explained. Then he upset one and it oozed out honey. He turned over the other and vinegar spilled out. When a jar is upset, whatever is in it comes out. Until the jars were upset, they looked alike. The difference was within and could not be seen. When they were upset, their contents were revealed. Until we are upset, we put on a good front. But when we are upset, we reveal our innermost thoughts and attitudes, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks (Luke 6:45). What if someone tipped you over today? What would ow out? Would you reveal the honey of grace and patience, or the vinegar of anger and sarcasm? Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8). Have a terric day knowing that the one who upsets you may be just looking for some honey. --Author unknown In bereavement The families and friends of the late Virdie (Miz Kitty) Dobson are in our thoughts and prayers. It pays to be positive Sometimes we try too hard to get what we already have. A positive attitude is very important to our healing process. By now we should know that a positive attitude is a major key in our life. Weve read it so many times and weve heard it over and over, so by now we should believe it. Our physical and mental healing is at the top of the list. No, its not easy. When Jesus was teaching his disciples (Matthew 10:78), He bade them As you go, preach, saying, the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, chase out devils; freely you have received, freely give. Let nothing and no one divert your mind from believing that you will be healed. In Psalm 107-9-20, David wrote, I cried unto the Lord and He heard my cries and He delivered me. Instead of questioning and criticizing the weaknesses of yourself and others, ask God to give you strength to obey and keep his commandments. Christ is giving all of us the same opportunity. He simply said, Follow me! It is our responsibility to create within ourselves a positive attitude and an individual ministry of healing. Digest the Word of God as a hungry person digests a meal. Believers know without a doubt, we can be healed! In the darkest moments, when pain is out of control, when tears cover your face and doubts begin to control your mind, pray. Pray and keep your positive thoughts active. We cant give up, weve just got to ght. Jesus is there. He will not leave us or forsake us. The ministry of healing must be part of our daily lives. When the healing comes, remember to give Him thanks and glorify our Father, which is in Heaven. So if you dont know much, listen for all youre worth. Happy Fathers Day An Ode to Fathers There are dads, husbands, granddads and others, but fathers stand out for themselves. They dont have to be prodded, persuaded, threatened or asked. They know who they are and what their responsibility and purpose on earth is. They are kind, loving, concerned, caring and responsible. They accept help only when needed. They are always available, eager and ready. Their arms are always open. Their love for their own and humanities are given freely. Their hearts know no limit. Their words are sweet, gentle and kind. God sent them. The family praises them. The community needs them. The world would be a better place to live in if there were more fathers. The Rev. Aquilla Hanson of St. James Episcopal Church continues the tradition of blessing the boats and crews at the beginning of scallop season by sprinkling holy water and blessing each vessel participating in the annual event. The Blessing of the Fleet is a tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean shing communities. The practice began predominantly Catholic, but is now practiced by all Christians. It is a blessing from the local priest and pastors that is meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season, Hanson said. The tradition of Blessing of the Fleet is asking God to protect all the boats that will go out and, through Gods graciousness, that the catch be bountiful and good. Its a wonderful celebration of our faith, our history, our legacy and the tradition of the church to bless those go to the seas for a catch.
