By SARAH HARDEN Staff writer If youve been by the site of the new Perry Primary School lately, you may have noticed walls and roong starting to go up. Last month we started putting on the roong structures of the rst classroom building, Scott Brewer, project executive with Allstate Construction, said during the Taylor County School Boards June 5 meeting. During Brewers brief update on the progress of construction, he explained how Allstates critical focus will go from structural components to interior nishes. So the roof comes on, the windows go in, the masonry work outside starts to progress, then our key focus is the guts and gears inside the building, and nally nishes, Brewer explained. Probably within this month well be focused on those nishes (of the rst building) and the other buildings will be ongoing. Trusses are also expected to go up on the cafeteria area next week, according to Brewer. From the cafeteria, roong will go up on the administration building and nally to the last classroom building. While construction is steadily progressing, heavy rains have set the substantial completion date back. Originally, students were to move into their new school over the winter holiday in January 2019. According to Brewer, construction should now be completed in late January or early February, with students moving into the new school in August. This gives us the summer to really polish and shine the school, take care of things and get through a cycle in the summer months with the new air conditioning systems. Ive seen it happen over the holidays, its just pretty hectic, Brewer said. The board will also be presented with their rst change order on the project at the next board meeting, where they will sign off on using LVT vinyl tile instead of VCT vinyl tile. Originally, the school district wanted a higher quality, more durable, low maintenance ooring LVT vinyl tile but opted for VCT vinyl to save money, with the hopes of being able to change to LVT if funds allowed. That total (ooring) change costs $217,000, Brewer said. While the amount of 2018 funding for the project was reduced $390,848 by the Department of Education (DOE), the school district has made up the decit and then some. According to Taylor County School District Facilities and Maintenance Coordinator Dan Anderson, a total of $450,000 was put back into the project through a number of cost-saving decisions, giving the district a surplus of $60,000. Additional confusion set in when council members balked after learning of an additional estimated $40,000 cost in maintenance for assuming ownership of Jefferson Street (a necessary step in order for the canopy project to proceed). However, some council members breathed a little easier when new information emerged that the estimated cost should be somewhere in the neighborhood of $5,000 a year rather than the $40,000 initially misquoted. Discussions regarding the project happened during a special council meeting held last week, after the lone bid received on the project was opened. That bid totalled $905,000 and was a welcome sight to ofcials News Forum Serving the Tree Capital of the South Since 1889 Anonymous investors want to renovate former DMH building: $10,000 offered for old hospital A group of anonymous investors -represented by local attorney Ray Curtis has offered to purchase the former hospital building located on Ash Street as part of a plan to renovate and remodel the facility to house ofce suites and apartments. Curtis attended the countys Monday night meeting to determine the countys interest level for a proposal he spelled out in a May 18 letter sent to County Administrator Ted Lakey: I represent a group of investors who, at present, wish to remain anonymous. They have asked me to meet with the board to gauge the boards receptiveness to selling the hospital building located at 407 East Ash Street, Curtis wrote. This group would be interested in purchasing the building from the county for $10,000 with a seven-year property tax abatement. In exchange, the group would immediately assume any and all liability associated with the property, Curtis letter said. The group would also begin a phased plan to make any structural repairs, remove and abate existing asbestos and ultimately remodel the building to contain ofce suites on the rst oor and apartments Please see page 3 Can I get a different lawyer?Forsythe: I was confused at trialBy CAITLYN BURCHETT Contributing writer Obviously exasperated, attorney Shirley Bates entered the courtroom Tuesday morning in a urry of outward emotions, cutting the silence that had fallen over the few individuals awaiting the sentencing hearing of Oriana Forsythe, 19. She doesnt want to talk to me, Bates huffed to Victims Advocate Brandi Turner. Forsythe -one of two people charged in the murder of Steinhatchee resident Aaron Tappe -entered the courtroom moments later, followed closely by two deputies. The oral blouse and black slacks Forsythe wore during her rst degree murder trial in March had been traded for a county-issued orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, the metal Ketring joins race for city council seat Ward Eugene Ketring has led to run for the Perry City Council District 5 seat just one day after incumbent Mayor David Sullivan announced he will not run for re-election. Ketring joins Tonya B. Holton -who led to run on Monday -in the District 5 city council race. Sullivan turned in his withdrawal document to Supervisor of Elections Dana Southerland on Tuesday, and Ketring led to run on Wednesday. Those wishing to run for a city council seat have until the end of qualifying on Monday, June 18, at noon to le and complete the required paperwork. Qualifying for county races will run from June 18 at noon through Friday, June 22, at noon. Those candidates can likewise le to run through the end of qualifying as long as they also complete the necessary paperwork prior to the deadline. To le, a candidate must also pay the qualifying fee, which is based on the salary of the position they are seeking. For partisan races, such as county commission, it is six percent of the annual salary ($1,849.50), while for non-partisan races, such as the school board, it is four percent of the annual salary ($1,083.16). The city councils fee is calculated differently, consisting of $25 plus a onepercent election assessment, totaling $115.25. There is also an additional onepercent election assessment that city candidates must pay as required by the Florida Election Commission -although if candidates cannot afford this assessment, they can provide a sworn statement attesting to such. Candidates can qualify early, and as of Thursday afternoon, seven of the 20 local candidates currently led to run had ofcially qualied by completing their paperwork, which includes the candidate oath and a nancial statement. A-4 Perry News-Herald June 8-9, 2018 June 8-9, 2018 Looking Back RESCUE AT SEA Harry and Nancy Allison didnt catch any grouper when they headed out past Marker 18 on the Miss Anclote. What they caught instead was three human beings -and they were live ones. About 35 miles out from Keaton Beach on June 3, 1983, Nancy thought she saw something on the horizon about a mile or so away, she said. The Allisons were getting close to their favorite shing spot, but they followed the blinking light instead. What they found astounded them. There, on a nine-foot by 12-foot remains of a boat bridge roof, were three very thirsty, very tired, very sore and very alive humans. Paul Odell, 57, of Pryor, Okla., Bill Weaver, 37, of Chouteau, Okla., and his son Billy, 12, were about to end three days of helplessly oating on the Gulf of Mexico. The Allisons hoisted the three aboard the Miss Anclote and headed back to Keaton Beach. BUCKEYE MODERNIZEDThe Buckeye Cellulose Corporation announced that the company had approved plans for a multi-million dollar modernization of its woodyard operation at the pulp mill. According to Plant Manager Charley Wertheimer, the modernization project was to install state-of-the-art technology to insure that the Taylor County plant remained competitive with other cellulose manufacturers in the industry. Wertheimer said new equipment planned for the operation would enable the mill to process incoming wood more effectively. These changes would result in improved productivity, reduce energy requirements and lower maintenance costs, he said. The new project would not to increase the mills pulp production capacity. WENDYS IS COMINGPopular fast-food restaurant Wendys was to be located at the site of Perry Electronics and Walkers Food Mart on South Byron Butler Pkwy. Perry Electronics owner Bill Outland said that Junior Walker the owner of the building which housed both business, had given him notice about two weeks ago to vacate. He said that he had about one month left to leave his present location. Outland said that Walker and ofcials from Wendys were in the process of negotiating the sale for the building to the restaurant chain. SOCCER AWARD TO GREG MIXONTaylor County High School student Greg Mixon won the Class of 1983 Most Valuable Soccer Player award, sponsored by the Army College Fund. The award was presented to hundreds of outstanding high school soccer players across the country in 1983. Staff Sergeant Ralph G. Anderson, Army recruiter in Perry, presented the award. He said, Mixon started every game and was an outstanding offensive and defensive player. He displayed super hustle and was well skilled in the sport. KIDDIE KOLLEGE KINDERGARTEN HELD COMMENCEMENTThe boys and girls of Kiddie Kollege Kindergarten presented their annual commencement program at Taylor County High School on May 27 to a large group of parents and friends. The evenings entertainment and fun began when the curtain opened on a large group of lively threeyear-olds dressed in yellow and red Kiddie Kollege shirts. These boys and girls illustrated some of the many things they had learned during the school year with several favorite selections such as The Alphabet Song, Miss Polly, Little Red Wagon and The Beehive. The second part of the program, entitled What a Difference a Year Makes, was opened by the four and ve-year-olds singing their Kiddie Kollege Alma Mater, accompanied by Kristy Askew on the piano. NEW GARDEN CLUB OFFICERSNewly elected President Alice (Shuge) Mangum headed up the activities for the Perry Garden Club during the 1983-84 year, assisted by Hazel Veal as vice-president. Other new ofcers of the club were Althea Slaughter, recording secretary; Judy Nowlin, corresponding secretary; and Jenny Lou Schrenk, treasurer. The important posts of circle chairmen belonged to Virginia Maddox of the Pine Tree Circle and Diane Ching of the Palmetto Circle. Plans were underway to improve the club and bring in new members, Mangum said. The rst big event planned for the new season was the Standard Fall Garden Show. Throughout the years, the club has worked toward its goal to beautify the local scene and to further members interest in all the various phases of the work. AMANDA ROBERTS SUNBURST QUEENAmanda Nicole Roberts was named Little Florida Sunburst Queen in the state pageant held at the Marriot in Orlando May 24-26. COOKERS HEADED FOR D.C.One of the most popular groups in Perry, the Taylor County Cookers, performed their culinary arts among the legislative leaders of the country in honor of Florida Day in the Nations Capital. Florida Day was held Wednesday, June 8, and was designated by Gov. Bob Graham. The celebrations in Washington, D.C., were sponsored by the Florida State Society, a group of Floridians who either lived or spent considerable time in Washington for business reasons. Included in the days festivities was a pageant in which several constituents of the Second District of Florida portrayed historical gures in Floridas history, such as Florida Governor (and later U.S. President) Andrew Jackson. After the pageant, participants led a grand march to a traditional North Florida Fish Fry prepared by the Taylor County Cookers. The cookers had prepared meals for almost every group in Taylor County at one time or another, and were known for their typical southern meals and all the xins.BIRTHSDiana Selene Floyd Mr. and Mrs. Philip Floyd of Perry were pleased to announce the birth of a daughter, Diana Selene, on Thursday, May 26, at Tallahassee Memorial Regional Medical Center. A glance at the past THE PERRY NEWS-HERALD June 9, 1983 Remember when... By ANTHONY L. WHITE anthonylamarwhite@yahoo.comMy brothers, my rivals My two brothers and I were as different as three brothers could be. We didnt always get along, which was expected because of our very different personalities. But, even when we didnt, we were the only ones who could call the We did nearly everything together. We would not sit down for dinner until all three of us were present and ready to eat. If one of us was sick and couldnt go to school, the other two suddenly came down with a similar ailment and pleaded with our mother and grandmother for a sick day. And, if one of us got involved in something -even if the other two didnt like it -they felt obligated to participate as well. This is why my brothers decided to participate in the talent show at the summer day camp one year. The summer day camp program was run by Mrs. Shirley Scott and a few other black educators at the middle school, and throughout the summer we participated in arts, archery, gymnastics, dance and other programs. At the end of the summer, the camp sponsored a talent show so we could show our parents all the things wed learned. I was part of the gymnastics program and the talent show. Because I was participating in the talent show, my brothers signed up. Ken joined a group of boys doing a dance that led to the formation of a pyramid. Tony joined a group of boys performing a hula-hoop circus routine. It wasnt long before preparation for the competition began to weaken the bonds that held us together and we became bitter rivals. On the day of the talent show, our mother and grandmother sat together in the stands. to Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes Bad Luck. They cheered when Kens group danced and formed a pyramid that fell as soon as Ken climbed on the very top. And they cheered when Tony and his group twisted and tossed hula-hoops in the air with the precision of a trained circus group. While the judges prepared to announce their results, my brothers and I shot angry rival stares at each other from our respective corners. They announced the third-place winner. It wasnt one of us. They announced the second-place winner -Nancy Jackson, who had performed a song in the world, Roberta Flacks The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. Finally, they announced, And the winner is My brothers and I all stepped forward. Anthony Flowers! (I was Flowers back then.) I didnt hear the winners name, but I heard my mother and grandmother cheering. I heard my brother Ken cheering and my brother Tony cheering. I wasnt sure who had won, until Ken and Tony ran over to me and pushed me You won! they shouted As I raised my trophy, I could hear my mother, my grandmother and my two bitter rivals cheering louder than everyone in the gym. Quotable Quote Virgin cypress lumber Own a home built around 1965? Take a good look at the woodwork -could it possibly be materials reclaimed from the Burton-Swartz Hotel when it was dismantled piece by piece? The hotel, built around 1914, was a landmark at the Burton-Swartz (later Lee-Cypress) lumber town. When the hotel was torn down in 1965, workers painstakingly worked to salvage each possible piece of the valuable virgin cypress lumber. God can make a way...when there seems to be no way. Just ask Him. By SARAH HALL Living for yourself Websters Dictionary denes martyr as one who sacrices life, station, etc., for principle or to sustain a cause. Commonly, it means someone who puts the needs of others ahead of their own. Needless to say, the difference in our personalities, cultures, environments and upbringing make us all similar, but also different. Therefore, our dos and donts come out alike. What one will do, another wont. Our tolerance levels of stress, responsibility and sacrice varies from person to person. In other words, our values are also different. We may feel a little self-righteous and try to convince others to feel and do as we do, or think like we do. Dont be discouraged when that doesnt materialize. The sad truth is we cannot, and will not, benet from trying to be someone else. Regardless of how different or difcult your life may be, be yourself. God made all of us. Florida is renowned for pedestrian and bicycle mobility systems, which provide numerous tourism and economic development opportunities to the communities where the systems are located, Cox said.
