CASTELUCCI Managing Editor With their two toddlers napping, Raymond and Rainbow Brubaker thought it would be a good time Wednesday to leave them under the watchful eye of their 14-year-old brother and make a quick trip to town. They had only been gone a short while when their phone rang and their son told them that someone was trying to break into their house. He was sitting in the living room watching television when someone smashed the front windows. He grabbed the babies and ran into the bathroom. We kept him on the line while we called 911, Raymond said. They kicked in the front door, stole my car and took off. They crashed the car on Yates Creek Road and ran. Our son didnt see who did it -he was concentrating on getting the babies to a safe place. We are so proud of him, Raymond said. The couple arrived back at their home off Beach Road shortly after law A sheriffs deputy was on the scene of an attempted home invasion near Sea Oaks Drive, off Beach Road, within seven minutes of 911 receiving the call. This quick response is a direct result of our zone patrols and having deputies staying in those zones to facilitate faster response times, Sheriff Wayne Padgett said. Please see page 4 The Taylor County Development Authority (TCDA) has identied a group of three rms interested in working together to develop, construct and eventually operate an assisted living facility on a parcel of county-owned property adjacent to Doctors Memorial Hospital. According to the proposal, if the multi-phase plan is built and staffed to capacity, the proposed facility could eventually employ up to 83 people with an annual payroll exceeding $1.3 million. On behalf of the City of Perry and Taylor County, the TCDA advertised a request for proposals from rms interested in building on ve or more acres located near Doctors Memorial Hospital (DMH). TCDA Economic Developer Scott Frederick said the TCDA received interest from several rms, but only one applicant was willing to both construct and operate the facility. The Thomas Bowden Hendry branch of the Hendry family will take the lead in organizing the 151st annual reunion planned Sunday, May 6, in Shady Grove. Thomas was the sixth child of Robert M. and Martha Carlton Hendry. He was born April 28, 1848, and died May 8, 1910, in Perry at the age of 62. He was a prominent farmer in the area, as well as a very active member of the Methodist Protestant Church. He was very active in the community and in the ministry, being instrumental in organizing several churches, including Fenholloway, Providence and Pine Level, Jared Hendry said. It is recorded that one of the last words he was heard saying were the lyrics to the old hymn The Haven of Rest. Thomas and his wife, Josephine, had four children: Madison Marvin, Letha Estelle, Edna Corine and James Atkins. Marvin and Letha died in childhood, and Edna died one day shy of her 30th birthday in 1914, naming two of her children after the brother and sister she lost. James (Jim Ad) was a teacher for eight years and then answered the call to the ministry in the Methodist church in 1913. He served many churches in the Florida district, including Perry. He was also a consummate historian, traveling many miles across the state, researching records and visiting cemeteries to gather a lot of the information we have on our family heritage today. His grandchildren are hosting this years reunion and will be speaking during the worship hour. Services at the Robert M. Hendry Memorial Church will begin at 11 a.m. followed by dinner on the grounds. Dont forget to check in at the registration table and be sure to update any changes to your address or any other names and addresses you would like to add or remove. As time goes by, and more of our loved ones pass away, we need to be mindful of the tradition and legacy the Hendry forbearers have given us and encourage the younger generations to get involved and come be a part of the heritage we hold dear, (Jared) Hendry said. Encourage other family members to come and celebrate one of the greatest gifts we will ever receive -the Hendry family.CITY HIKED UTILITY RATESCustomers of city utilities expected to see a drastic change in their May water and sewer utility bills and were also expected to see similar changes in garbage collection rates. The Perry City Council voted to approve rate hikes for water and sewage customers and began adoption proceedings for similar rate increases in the garbage department. In addition, the council lifted the controversial $10 cap on the utility tax, adopting an ordinance that would gradually raise the utility tax to a full nine percent by the year 1987. The adopted ordinance was chosen as a less harsh alternative to the ordinance that called for a full 10 percent utility tax after the citys business community protested that lifting the $10 utility tax cap would place an unfair nancial burden on the small businesses in the city. A-2 Perry News-Herald April 27-28, 2018 April 27-28, 2018 Looking Back A glance at the past THE PERRY NEWS-HERALD April 28, 1983 Remember when... By ANTHONY L. WHITE anthonylamarwhite@yahoo.comNot easily broken I wore my best smile. I danced, sang and laughed when I was supposed to -even at jokes I didnt get. I blended in at my friends birthday party, but only on the outside. The year was 2010, and I wasnt at my best. Ten years earlier, I was in grad school at the University of Florida when my mother became ill and I decided to leave school and move home to help care for her. My lifes plans changed, but I wasnt disappointed because I saw the silver lining in my situation. Coming home allowed me to spend time with my mother and to work on a few writing projects. It wasnt the life Id planned, but life was still good. I spent nearly every day with my mother. I took her to doctor appointments, helped do her volunteer work at her church, and took care of the grandkids that were welcome 24/7 at her house. I wrote and self-published two novels. And, although I knew I wasnt going to accept the job, I offer to write for the Nickelodeon Romeo. In 2008, I remember telling a friend, two weeks before my second novel hit bookshelves, that I felt the rug was about to be snatched from under my feet again. And, sure enough, thats what happened. A few weeks after the second book arrived, my brother Ken, publishing venture, died in a car accident. Then, in 2009, almost a year after my brothers death, my mother passed. So, in 2010, I really wasnt at my best. I was in a strange place. My aim was off and everything I was shooting for missed by a mile. Uncertainty crept into my life. I still knew what I wanted, but I wasnt sure where my next steps were going to take me. I thought I would break. But then, while I was wearing my best smile, dancing, singing and making sure I laughed when I was supposed to, a friend danced over to me, put her arms around me, and kissed me on the jaw. Remember this my love, Pat Simon whispered in my ear. Youre not a diamond in the rough. You are already a diamond. Youre just living in the rough. Then she danced away. But, with that hug, that kiss, and eyes that saw and a heart that felt a diamond in me, my friend Pat Simon brought me back to a familiar place inside myself. Since then, when life takes unexpected turns, I see them only as detours. When I do my best and still dont win, I see a challenge instead of defeat. And when things happen -things that used to have the power to break me -I toughen up and remember what my friend Pat said. Im a diamond, and diamonds are not easily broken. City rates upped; stolen car recovered All in the name of Hendry Thomas Hendry (left) was the sixth child of Robert M. and Martha Carolton Hendry. Hie is shown with his wife, Josephine. The year was 1963 and I was a senior at Taylor County High School. Two of my classes were shorthand and typing. When Lee Tidewater Cypress Companys General Manager Lewis Hinchliffe called the school looking for a student who had secretarial skills (including shorthand), I was recommended. I interviewed for the job and was hired. I was 17 years old. The position was parttime until school was out, then it became full-time. The big building had no air conditioning, and in the afternoons the windows were opened. On the wings of the wind, sawdust oated through the open windows and onto our desks. I could hear the saws from the mill, and the aroma of the cypress wood was pleasant to me. Lee Tidewater Cypress Company was the worlds largest cypress logger. The company specialized in building soft-drink crates and sold lumber. I worked there until the birth of my rst child, Kevin. That was my rst job and a most memorable one. Shorthand is now a lost art, but almost every position I was hired for utilized shorthand as a method of letter writing. For those who dont know, shorthand is a method of rapid writing by means of abbreviations and symbols, used especially for taking dictation. As the word processor and the computer replaced the typewriter, so the dictating machine took place of shorthand. And By the way, the pecan tree has leaves -I dont know when they came, but today when I looked up, there they were, just like I said, Magic. Now we know that the cold weather has passed for this year. Thats all for now. Lord willing, Ill see you back here in a couple of weeks. Dessert auction supports B&G Club playground fund Cypress Company. Above, a big circular saw is shown cutting a log at the mill. Abstract Imaginations book series Abstract Imaginations with teen members of the Boys & many other abstract art coloring books, all of her designs are original drawings like to thank Taylor for sharing her creativity and inspiration with us. A-6 Perry News-Herald April 27-28, 2018 Religion By SARAH HALL Why do we need Jesus? Three reasons why we need Jesus 1. Because we have a past. We cant go back, but He can. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever Hebrews 13:8. He can walk into those places of sin and failure, wipe the slate clean and give us a new beginning. 2. Because we need a friend. Only Jesus knows the worst about us, yet He believes the best. Why? Because He created us and knows everything! He sees us not as we are, but as we will be when He gets through with us. What a friend! 3. Because He holds the future. Who else can we trust completely? In His hands we are safe and secure, today, tomorrow and for all eternity. His word says, For I know the plans I have for you... plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. Jeremiah 29:1112 TLB God is getting us ready! --Referenced from daily devotional, The Word For You Today Gratitude Websters Dictionary denition of gratitude: The state of being grateful. Thankfulness. Often times we take our gifts and all the goodness in our lives for granted. A thank you is very well appreciated. Pass it on. Thoughts There will never be rest or tranquility on this Earth until the people of God become obedient to Gods will and Gods way. For we are here but a moment, strangers in the land; our days on Earth are numbered, like a shadow gone so soon, without a trace. 1 Chronicles 29:15 TLB Sometimes the journey is just as important as the destination. Touched by An Angel The Holy Alphabet Although things are not perfect, Because of trial or pain, Continue in thanksgiving, Dont even think of whom to blame. Even when the times are hard, Fierce winds are bound to blow, God is forever able, Hold on to him, never let go. Imagine life without His love, Joy would cease to be, Keep thanking Him for all the things, Love imparts you to see. Move out of Camp Complaining, No weapon that is known, On earth can yield the power, Praise can do alone. Quit worrying about the future, Redeem the time at hand, Start every day with prayer, To thank is Gods command. Until we see Him coming, Victorious in the sky, Well run the race with gratitude, EXalting the Most High God. Yes, there will be good times and yes, some will be bad, but... Zion waits in glory... where no one is ever sad! The one who kneels to the Lord can stand up to anything. --Author unknown Whats in a name? What is your given name? Do you use this name or do you go by a nickname? What is your nickname? How did you acquire the name that you use? Do you consider your name to be an important part of your identity? Are you happy with your name? Would you change your name if you could? What would you change it to? That Scallop Season Seminar was nationally recognized recently after receiving a 2018 ANREP Outstanding Educational Materials Silver Award. ANREP (Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals) is a national association for Cooperative Extension Service (CES) professionals that work in a wide range of environmental projects, including environmental forestry, wildlife and water. ANREP hands out yearly awards to outstanding programs, like the Scallop Season Seminar, that educate the public on the environment around them. At the beginning of June 2017, tourists from all over the country piled in their RVs, hooked up their boat trailers, and made their way to the Taylor County coast to participate in scallop season. In order to make sure the public and incoming tourists were up-to-date on the scalloping environment and rules, local organizations gathered together to host their annual educational seminar, but in 2017, they did things a little different from previous seminars. Last year, we decided to try live streaming and recording the seminar because its an educational event aimed at people coming to town for the season. Tourists sometimes arent totally familiar with habitat rules and the of live streaming is we can reach a larger audience, Savanna Barry with the UF/ IFAS Sea Grant Extension Nature Coast Biological Station said. The seminar went live and was a smashing success. It was great, especially now that were planning to do this years seminar. Ive been in contact with local leaders, and their (of the broadcast), Victor Blanco with the UF/IFAS Sea Grant Extension Taylor County said. There are people in Steinhatchee who watched the broadcast last year and are planning on attending in person this year,
