Perry native LaTevin Alexander Ellis, 26, is currently oating like a buttery and stinging like a bee on stage in Portland, Ore. Ellis, the son of Cynthia Ellis, stars in a new Oregon Childrens Theater play, And in This Corner: Cassius Clay, as a young Cassius Clay before he changed his name and became boxing legend, Muhammad Ali. Set in segregated 1950s Kentucky, themes of racial inequality and childhood bullying intertwine as audiences are given a glimpse into the boxing origins of the civil rights hero. In an interview with the Portland Observer Ellis said, You get to see how all the fundamentals and all the forces in his life are set in motion. He starts to see the world as it was and how it is for a black man in America. You get to see the caterpillar of the buttery. Ellis was raised in Taylor County, graduating from Taylor County High School in 2010 before heading off to Florida A&M University (FAMU) to pursue a degree in Theater. According to his mother, Cynthia, Ellis has been an actor all his life, acting in church plays and other productions when he was young. After learning to write, direct, produce and act, Ellis graduated from FAMU in 2014. He then relocated to Portland, Ore., to apprentice at the Portland Playhouse, before going on to found his own theater company, Confrontation Theater. And in This Corner: Cassius Clay ran from March 3-25, with showtimes on Saturday and Sunday. Ellis ew his mother out to see him perform. I was so happy to see him on stage. I was his original audience when he was young. Its so overwhelming, Ellis mother said proudly. Weather 5 Weather Friday 80%Saturday78 50 Sunday79 51 73 65Index Looking Back . ......... Fading owers attest to the time that has passed since lives were taken too soon in violent crashes partially caused by inadequate lighting, poor choices and sheer unfortunate luck. Those left behind continue to ask, What can be done to make Old Dixie safe for bicyclists and pedestrians? Perry City Council members discussed the issue at length at their Tuesday night meeting, but found they were stymied by the fact that -although the bulk of the highway runs through the city limits -the road itself is owned the county, and thus all responsibility for the road falls to the county commission. I know Old Dixie Highway is a county road and that one of the issues the county has with it, is it has very narrow right-of-ways on the sides. Still, I think we need to be on top of what the county is doing, or not doing, about the safety issues, Mayor David Sullivan said. Its county property. You are prohibited from spending any money on property that you do not own. I dont believe the county is doing Deadly Highway?Councils hands tied on Old DixiePlease see page 3Perry and Taylor County ofcials, as well as many local businesses, will be gearing up for a ood of outof-town contract workers over the next several weeks, as Georgia-Pacics Foley Cellulose mill is preparing for a major cold mill outage scheduled in late April. The massive nine-day maintenance project is scheduled to begin April 19 and will end on April 27, 2018. Workers are coming in for what the paper industry calls a cold mill outage (CMO), as the local paper mill will halt operations for nine days in order to undertake numerous major maintenance projects. The last time the local Foley Cellulose mill had a cold mill outage was in May 2014. Foley Cellulose Public Affairs Manager Scott Mixon notied local ofcials of the upcoming outage this week to make sure Perry and Taylor County agencies are prepared for the onslaught of activity and increased trafc more than 1,000 visitors are expected to bring to the local community. We have over 1,000 contract workers identied who will be working inside the mill during the CMO, in addition to our full-time employees who normally work at the Foley mill, Mixon said. Approximately 700 of those workers will be on day shift, with the rest working at nights. There is a possibility that more workers could be added to the list before the CMO begins, Mixon added. We will manage the ow of trafc into the mill with gate assignments and alternate time schedules. Please note that the Credit Union road bridge is scheduled to be temporarily closed during the CMO More than 1,000 workers coming to town Mill gears up for outage Please see page 3Local ofcials are looking for a way to combat the littering problem affecting the countys roadways by utilizing those ordered by the court to perform community service. However, despite the free labor involved, implementing such a program will come at a high price. Taylor County commissioners have repeatedly discussed developing such a program to clean up county-owned facilities and rights-of-way, but the issue of insurance and the cost involved with supervising community service workers has repeatedly shut down talks before a plan could be implemented. Last month, commissioners once again expressed dismay over the amount of trash along the countys roadways and returned to the subject of community service workers. In response, Taylor E llis steps into the ring, and on stage a s The Greatest Roadside litter pick-up cost is high Please see page 4Complaints from residents over recent road closures have prompted the Taylor County Board of County Commissioners to consider resuming maintenance -and possibly assuming ownership of some private roads owned by Four Rivers Land & Timber Company. At the countys recent March 8 workshop meeting, Commissioner Jim Moody brought up the recent closure of a portion of Salem Tower Grade, which runs from Beach Road (CR 361) between Keaton Beach and Steinhatchee and Fish Creek Grade near Highway 19 South. Like many other large private landowners across the nation, Four Rivers is in the process of limiting access on some of the companys local privately-owned roads as part of an ongoing effort to reduce liability concerns (and associated insurance premiums). Green St. was burglarized during the night, according to a report from the Perry Police Department, but nothing was stolen from the business. The burglary was discovered at about 7:45 a.m. by P. Randolph Deveaux. According to a report from Sgt. Doug Betts the burglar knocked out a glass window on the south side of the building before prying open the back door to enter. All desk drawers and cabinets were pried open by the burglar, but nothing was taken. An interview of neighbors showed that no one heard the break-in. NEW WILDLIFE OFFICER FOR COUNTYHarry Lane Bentley of Tallahassee graduated March 25 from the State Wildlife Ofcer Training Academy and planned to take up his post in Taylor County soon after. Bentley was among 22 graduates who participated in ceremonies at the state capitol. The ceremony marked the end of 500 hours of instruction and three months eld training. Bentley was assigned to Taylor County in the Northeast Region of the Commission. SUPER WALK A BIG SUCCESSThe walkers ranged in age from eight months to 88 years Saturday during the annual Taylor County Chapter of the March of Dimes Super Walk at the Forest Capital Park in Perry. While the youngest, Michael Chase Walker was strolled around the course by his mother, Carol Walker, 88-year old Helen Scales of the Perry Health Facility legged out two and one half miles during the Super Walk on her way to collecting more than $600, believed to be the highest amount an individual collected. The complete tally of money collected would not be determined until the money was all turned in on April 16 at Forest Capital Park, at which time a bicycle from Western Auto would be donated to Mrs. Scales for being the walker who raised the most money. All proceeds from the event benetted the March of Dimes. Mrs. Hart is not a lady to tell you of her contributions, sorority President Carolyn Sims said. Hart was a longtime active member of the First United Methodist Church and held many positions, including Sunday school teacher and superintendent of Sunday school. According to members of the sorority who presented the award, Hart visited or called shut-ins and the sick on a daily basis. By ANTHONY L. WHITE firstname.lastname@example.orgDid you miss me? one to tell me. Youre here more than youre there, she said. So, youre not giving us enough time to miss you. The year was 1983. It was the spring semester of my freshman year at the University of Florida, and my grandmother pointed this fact out to me after I began coming home every weekend and making occasional daytrips to Perry during the middle of the week. If you wanted to stay in Perry, you shouldve gone to FAMU or FSU and just drove to Tallahassee every day, she said. I was taken aback by this. It was only a semester earlier that my Uncle Charles knocked on my dorm room door at six in the morning and said my grandmother sent him. Its October and you havent been home since you left in August, so Momma told me to come get you, he said. I guess she misses you. I cant go this weekend because I tried to respond. Youre going, Charles cut me off. Now pack! So, I did. Absence does make the heart grow fonder, because my grandmother, my mother, my brothers and nearly everyone else were overjoyed to see. Five months later, my grandmother informed me (and in her most caring tone) that I wasnt giving anyone time to miss me. Many of my other family and friends who also noticed this werent as sympathetic, especially after I began working at Pizza Hut (my old high school job) on the weekends. You need to stay your behind in Gainesville, some suggested. You must not like Gainesville? others inquired. None of this bothered me because as long as I made As and Bs at UF, my grandmother and mother Years later, while living in Detroit during the early 90s, my weekly visits home became monthly visits. In June 1991, my Aunt Wilma and I drove from Detroit to Perry and stayed a week. In July 1991, my cousin Shirlene and I drove from Detroit to Perry and stayed a week. And, in August 1991, my Aunt Wilma and I drove to Perry again. When we pulled in my grandmothers yard on this third summer visit, I announced my arrival and asked, Did you miss me? We cant miss you when youre here all the time, my grandmother reminded me again. You must not like Detroit? a cousin, who was at my grandmothers house, inquired. Why do you say that? I asked. Because youre here more than youre there, my grandmother answered for my cousin. Just like when you were living in Gainesville. I didnt know how to respond to this back then, but I do now. I liked Gainesville. I enjoyed Detroit. But, I love home. Hart named Lady of the Year 1976-77 TCHS Track Team
anything about lighting along the highway. The only lights there are the ones the city placed at the intersections where city streets meet Old Dixie, City Manager Bob Brown said. I know the county and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) have gotten grant funds to install sidewalks along at least part of the highway. But that isnt supposed to happen until the 201920 scal year. Even when they put in the sidewalks, youre not supposed to ride bicycles on sidewalks, he said. Is there a way to add poles along the highway for more lights? Councilman Alan Hall asked. We cant. Its not your property. The bottom line is you dont have the ability to spend any money there, Brown said. I think we should explore every option we have at our means to do something, Sullivan said. I know weve had multiple accidents on that road, but I dont think any amount of lights is going to have an impact. In this last case (of a bicyclist being hit by a vehicle), it was daylight and the person driving the vehicle still left the scene. Its about how people drive on the highway. Adding lights wont help, Councilman Mike Deming said. Referencing the fatal crashes involving bicyclists and skateboarders that have occurred over the past several years on Old Dixie, Brown said, You had an individual wearing ear buds on a skateboard, on the road, at night. You had a man dressed in dark clothing on a bicycle with no lights or reectors riding in the middle of the road at night. These were not children either. They were adults, but they still made bad choices, Sullivan said. Im thinking like you, David. Something needs to be done. We need to go to the county next, Councilwoman Shirlie Hampton said. The citizens need to go to the commission if they want it (more lighting, sidewalks, etc.). You are prohibited from spending money on property that is not yours, Brown reiterated. Too many rules, Hall said. Anything done on that property is their (county) responsibility, Brown said. Perry Police Department (PPD) Chief Jamie Cruse said his ofcers routinely patrol the area of the road that runs in the city limits, and it slows trafc down while we are there. The way the road is designed is a factor. You have this long straightaway where people are more likely to speed. You cant control the lighting. We need to educate pedestrians and bicyclists next, but how? How do you teach people to be good pedestrians and bicyclists on that roadway? Then theres law enforcement action it is legal to ride a bicycle on the road. Its classied as a vehicle. But there are rules for bicyclists and pedestrians that no one complies with. The issue for us is the availability of ofcers for enforcement with the number of calls our ofcers deal with, the investigations, Cruse said. I hate to say the county has to do something, but we only have control of what we have control of, Sullivan said. I know this seems extreme, but what if we did an ordinance saying no bicycles on Old Dixie in the city limits? Deming said. You cant. Its a motor vehicle according to statute, Cruse said. There is only six feet of right-of-way past the road, which is another problem, Sullivan said. People keep saying turn the railroad right-of-way into a trail, but the vast majority of that right-ofway is all privately owned now, Brown said. We could send a letter to FDOT asking them to add a bicycle lane to the highway. Get it on record now, Deming suggested. It would be largely symbolic if you did, Brown said. But it would still be on record, Deming said. What about sending a letter to the county commission listing your concerns and asking them to do what they can to make the road safer? Brown said. City Attorney Ray Curtis recommended that, instead of a letter, the council send the commission a resolution stating it (the council) would support whatever efforts the county decided to undertake to improve trafc safety. Council members agreed to the recommendation by consensus, and a draft is expected for review at its next meeting. A-3 Perry News-Herald March 30-31, 2018 due to crane work at our wastewater treatment facility, Mixon said. The usually-sleepy town of Perry will see its population increase dramatically for more than a week, as the estimated 1,000 visiting workers will ood not only the Foley Cellulose mill, but local roadways, motels, hotels, restaurants and other businesses. The CMO project is good news for the local economy, as Georgia-Pacic continues to make major capital investments in the local mill, and the out-of-town workers will also provide a boon to local businesses who provide lodging, food, supplies, other goods and services. We want to make sure that everyone is aware of this activity in advance. Please relay this information to your staff and departments, as necessary for preparation. We will provide more updates as information becomes available, Mixon added. Mixon could not provide information on the total investment (contract labor, supplies, parts and equipment) associated with the 2018 cold mill outage. Our estimate on the total investment is not complete and currently under review by mill leadership, Mixon stated. Business encouraged to prepare for boom His name is Calvin Cone, but you might hear him addressed as Illustrious Sir. Cone was recently installed as the 2018 Potentate for the Marzuq Shriners in Tallahassee. Cone is only the second Potentate for the Marzuq Shriners to have a Perry address. Ivan Rowell was the last Marzuq Shriners Potentate from Perry, serving in 1996. It is my sincere hope that 2018 will be a fun and positive year for the Marzuq Shrine Temple. If we all work in harmony and with brotherly love we can accomplish many things for our Shrine Temple, Cone said. Cone was born and raised in Greenville with his six older siblings. After graduating from Greenville High School, he attended North Florida Junior College and later Florida State University (FSU) and Rollins College. After graduating from FSU, Cone worked with Florida Department of Corrections (FDOC), eventually relocating to Perry. After several years as a probation supervisor with FDOC, he became the county probation supervisor, handling county court cases for Hamilton, Madison and Taylor counties. Cone was the rst private probation entity handling probation cases in county courts in the state of Florida. Now there are over 25 private probation ofces throughout Florida, with Cone helping set up several of the initial ofces. He began his Masonic career in 1975, when he was raised as a Master Mason in Greenville Lodge No. 28, where he remains a member today. In 1985, he was elected Worshipful Master of his lodge, and in 1986, was appointed District Deputy Grand Master (DDGM). After serving as DDGM, he held several Grand Lodge Committee appointments. Cone noted that his father was Worshipful Master of Greenville Lodge No. 28 the same year he was born, and his father was a member of the Morocco Shrine. Cone joined the Shrine in 1988 and is a charter member of the Marzuq Shrine Temple. Before being elected potentate, he served on the Board of Directors and as president of the Perry Shrine Club, as well as on the Marzuq Shrine Divan. Greet Easter morning with a sunrise service Obituary Lest we forget Easter is not celebrated because of the Easter Bunny, Easter eggs or the Easter parade. We commemorate Easter with thanksgiving and praises to God for giving us the gift of salvation. Salvation is a gift. Romans 6:23 states, For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. When we accept Gods gift of salvation, we receive His grace, His mercy, His love and His forgiveness for our sins. The fact that salvation is free does not mean that it did not cost anything. Our Lord, Jesus, paid the price when he died on Calvarys Cross. He commendeth His love for His creation, the human race, that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8, Therefore, when we reject Christs gift, we sentence ourselves to eternal damnation. Who can refuse so great a love? Celebrate Easter, praise God for His gift and remember the Cross! Happy Easter. Wise words The Bible was written to be used as bread for everyday -not as cake for special occasions. Jesus, I want to thank you forever and ever for all youve done for me. Blessings and honor all belong to you. Thank you Jesus for blessings and blessing me! For the seniors Helping us to stay healthy, mind-wise and otherwise, from the experts: Excerpts from the Seven Worst Things you can do to Your Heart by Mike Limmerman. 1. Sneak a smoke (quit if you can or dont start). 2. Skip a walk (exercise when you can). 3. Snacking (that extra food causes weight gain). 4. Dinner out of a box (not a healthy eating pattern). 5. Shunning veggies (heavens no! Veggies are a must). 6. Stress (a very bad thing, try to keep your cool at all times! Try meditating, prayer, etc). 7. Over-drink (too much alcohol will kill you! Keep it modest. Evidence suggests that no alcohol at all is better for your heart than too much). A message that needs to be shared When we pray, as believers we expect God to answer our prayers as we pray them, when we pray them. But God has a specic formula that we need to follow in order for God to remove his judgement, forgive our sins and answer our prayers. This formula, H. P. S. R. is spelled out in 2 Chronicles 7-14: We must H-Humble ourselves, P-Pray sincerely to our Father, S-Seek His face and turn from our wicked and sinful ways, and R-Repent of our sins. Then God will petition Heaven and a forgiving and loving Father will heal our land, as only He can do. We must return Gods favor. God is almighty. We cant fool God. This applies to all our lives and thoughts. If we expect Gods love, forgiveness and protection, we must abide by His formula and ordinances for our lives. The consequences are severe and God is not always going to show mercy. We cannot stand the wrath of God. We need God. We must let God know, without a doubt, that He is our God and He alone must govern our lives. He that hath an ear, heart! Prayer focus As we pray, remember: Eula Mae (Gant) Grifn, Ronnie Kinsey, Crosby Whetsel, Deborah (Leo) Holland, Joan (Hennings) Norris, Delores (Billy) Jay, Laura L. Jenkins, Carl and Mary Alice Williams, Barbara Upshaw, Sherry (Wiggins) Baskins, Ruth Baskins and the Rev. and Mrs. J.C. Bentley (former pastor of New Brooklyn, Daytona Beach). Happy birthday Happy belated birthdays to Floyd Mango, March 25; Veleta (Curry) Roberson, March 25; and Javon Ross (son of Johnny Ross Jr. and Elisa Stivey), March 27. In bereavement The families and friends of Erma Lewis in the loss of her loved one, Wayne Walker, are in our prayers.
