Buckeye

announces

closure of

Brazil plant
Buckeye Technologies Inc.
announced Thursday the closure
of its Americana, Brazil, cotton
linter pulp production line.
The company says it will
work closely with its customers
to continue to meet their needs
from its Memphis, Tenn.,
facility.
Buckeye's Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer John
Crowe said, "This closure has
become necessary due to the
facility's uncompetitive cost
position for the products it
makes. This is primarily driven
by the high cost of its cotton
linter raw material supply."
Crowe said it is unfortunate
that the closure will result in
the termination of employment
for approximately 60 dedicated
employees.
"We have owned and
operated the facility since 2000,
and we value and appreciate
the many contributions of the
organization over the past 12
years. Buckeye will continue
to operate the waste water
treatment facility for the
shared industrial site while
we continue discussions with
interested parties for the sale of
the facility," he said.
The company expects to
incur about $2.4 million in
restructuring expenses in
calendar 2012 and a non-
cash asset impairment charge
of about $49 million in the
October-December 2011
quarter. The closure is expected
to generate an approximate $20
million cash benefit,.primarily
due to tax benefits related to
the investment loss, assuming
Buckeye is able to utilize all of
its potential cellulosic biofuel
credits by June 2016.

Murder-for-hire

plot targeted

state's witness

The Perry Police Department
reports it has foiled a murder-
for-hire plot that targeted a
cooperating state witness.
Details of the case were
released Thursday afternoon.
One suspect is behind bars
and investigators said they
anticipate further arrests.
Rocky Buzbee, 56, is being
held without bond at the Taylor
County Jail on one charge of
solicitation to commit murder.
"His arrest was not made
based on a statement made
in passing, on a whim or in
frustration. This was a credible
threat that was taken seriously. It
was verified by'multiple sources
that led to evidence needed for
the probable cause to make the
arrest," Capt. Jamie Cruse said.
"There was a plan in place."
The plan allegedly involved
luring the state witness to a
residence, leading the individual
into the woods and shooting this
individual; there was also a plan
in place to dispose of the body
and any related evidence, Cruse
said.
Payment in the case was
apparently td be a goods trade
worth approximately $4,000.

Rocky Buzbee
"We will not tolerate state
witnesses being threatened.
The safety of state witnesses is
our primary concern. When we
received information regarding
this case from a confidential
source, we took immediate
action."
He noted that the department
has "investigations running
parallel with this one that are
expected to lead to at least one
additional arrest and possibly
more."
Buzbee was reportedly out on
bond when he began actively
soliciting someone to commit
murder.

City adopts 'move to Perry' incentive package

The City of Perry is rolling
out the welcome mat for
prospective new homeowners
inside us city jmuts.
On Tuesday, the City Council
unanimously approved granting
(city) property tax refunds for
five-full years for the purchase
of a primary residence in the
city.

"There are no restrictions on
minimum or maximum values
of the homes and refunds are
available on the purchase of
either existing or new homes.
We believe that this innovative
program is unique in the U.S.,"
City Manager Bob Brown said.
"We want to help keep
alive the American dream of

owning your own home. Our
community has been fortunate
during the economic downtown,
and we want to share Our quality
of life with others. Perry's cost
of living index is 19 percent
lower than the national average
and combined with our four
moderate seasons in North
Florida, this makes Perry an

ideal and friendly place to raise
a family or retire," Mayor Emily
Ketring said.
The property -tax refund
would also apply to current city
residents who purchase a new
home within the city limits that
has an increased value.
"The cost for these incentives
will be largely offset by other

increased revenues from
additional homesteads," Brown
noted.
In addition to city property
tax refunds on home purchases,
local incentives are available
to help businesses with as
few as five employees obtain

Precinct 13 project
The Taylor County Board of Commissioners held a ceremonial check presentation last week with representatives
of the Jerkins Community Center/Precinct 13 project. The commission unanimously agreed to donate $5,000 to

By ANTHONY L. WHITE .

It didn't come in a colorful gift bag and it didn't
cost a thing.
There was no card attached wishing me a happy
birthday or a party to celebrate the additional year
being tacked to my age.
Still, my 37th birthday stands out as one of the
most unforgettable birthdays I've had. What made
this birthday so remarkable weren't the presents
and cards I received or the fact that there were 10
fewer candles to blow out than this year. The reason
I still smile when I remember that birthday was
because of whom I spent it with.
When my birthday rolls around at the end of this
month, I'll add another year to my age, light 40
less candles than my age, have a drink or two for
me and Patricia, then laugh to myself as I fondly
remember that night 10 years ago.
My friend Patricia Knight and I had been
celebrating each other's birthdays together since
high school, so there was nothing really new or
different to do on my 37th birthday. But that didn't
stop her from acting like it was the first time we
celebrated together.
The morning before my big day arrived, I received
a wake-up call from Patricia.
"It's labor day," she sang into the phone. "It's
labor day."
"What day and month is it?" I asked.
She replied, "It's the 29th."
"Of what?"
"Of January," she answered.
"My birthday is on the 30th," I told her. "You're
a day early."
"No, I'm not," she countered. "Today isn't your
birthday, but it is the day your momma went in
labor."
The phone rang an hour earlier the next morning,
and that time, I beat her to the draw.
"It's my birthday," I answered the phone singing.
"It's my birthday."
"That's right," she joined in. "It's your birthday."
Patricia and Itemtlhaeuntire day celebrating my
birthday, but the real parey dicn t start until the
sun set. After a few cocktails, a hundred "happy
birthdays" from Patricia, and an evening of song
and dance, Patricia.looked at me and said, "I'm
exhausted. Let's go to the car so I can smoke a
cigarette."
"You don't smoke," I reminded her.
She corrected me, "I do on your birthday."
So off to the car we went.
I struggled for nearly five minutes trying to unlock
the driver's side door. Finally, Patricia pulled on the
passenger door and it opened. "You forgot to lock
the door," she said. As soon as we were seated in
the car, she lit a cigarette then handed me one.
"I don't smoke," I said.
"You do on your birthday," she advised then
exhaled a cloud of smoke. "Now, turn on some
music."
I tried to put the key in the ignition, but it didn't
fit.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"For some reason, the key doesn't..." Before I
could finish answering, Patricia and I both glanced
around the car.
"Antmar," she yelled. "This isn't your car."
"I know," I replied and reached for the door. But
Patricia stopped me.
"Hold on," she said. "We don't have to rush out."
"Yes, we do. This isn't my car."
"But, it is your birthday," she reminded me.
"Now, smoke your cigarette."
So, I did.
After all, what kind of person would get mad about
strangers sitting in their car smoking cigarettes on
their 37th birthday? Well, no one I know.

Graybar finds her

voice in new book,

'Off The Dock'
Laurie Hendry Graybar commends her new book, "Off The
Dock," to all friends in Taylor County, hoping they find her blend
of family secrets, loyalty and sinister plots "captivating reading"
and entertaining, too.
She easily describes herself as a fifth generation Taylor County
native. "My mother is Carol Hendry (longtime teacher at Perry
Primary School) and my father, Chuck Hendry, works at
Buckeye." Her grandparents are the late Charles E. Hendry, Mae
Dell O'Steen Hendry, Elmore and Louise Louque.
How does she describe her book? "It's a Southern fiction
mystery which is classified as a
regional read. Our very own
Dekle Beach dock is on the
cover," she said, crediting Laurie
Lilliott at Taylor Made
Photography with the cover
photography. "Her daughter
Hayden is running across the
dock."
Graybar currently resides in
Tallahassee with her husband,
Ben, and their two sons. She is a
Florida State University graduate
who was named Teacher of the Year in Clay County during her
third year of teaching. She has also been instrumental in writing a
number of science grants while working with animal rescue
projects through the state of Florida.
Proving herself as "a lifelong learner," she spent time in the
publishing industry for a Manhattan-based company. She then
became a designer, staging homes while co-owning an
international children's science franchise.
After receiving an adult diagnosis of ADHD (attention deficit
hyperactive disorder), Graybar says she learned firsthand about the
importance of creative people allowing their curiosity to take on a
life of its own.
Her newest venture, "Off The Dock," is set in a rural beach town
called Culley Cove where the Churchill family is "forced to face
hidden family secrets."
Noted author, Michael Morris--who also hails from Taylor
County--calls Graybar's book, "an exciting mixture of Sweet
Home Alabama and C.S.I. Fix a glass of sweet tea, sit back and
savor this tale that my friend has created."
Copies of "Off The Dock" will be available at the Book Mart on
Tuesday or can be found through Amazon. The Kindle version
will be next.
"It's my hope that my writing will encourage people to jump
from their docks, figuratively and literally," she said.

Huth works to keep you

Sat DMH and off the road...
By SUSAN H. LINCOLN
Managing Editor
Members of the Perry Woman's Club raised a glass to toast the new year,
2012, and then welcomed Richard Huth, administrator, to talk about the
,-- new year for Doctors' Memorial Hospital (DMH).
\ In his third year as CEO of DMH, Huth admitted that the economics of
Shealthcare "was a tough business," but he proudly displayed statistics from
Sthe previous year to show the impact the hospital was having on this
* s community, and those surrounding Taylor. DMH treated 45,353 patients in
-- the previous year and provided more than $13 million in salaries and
benefits.
"We offer good quality healthcare, close to home in a beautiful facility,"
he said, and then narrowed his assessment to specifics.
"There is absolutely no reason to go
anywhere else for imaging," he noted,
pointing to the hospital's new
ultrasound equipment, digital
mammography, CT scanner and bone
densitometer. "These are state-of-the-
art," he added.
He promoted the hospital's specialty
clinics. "When I got here, I think we
had representatives from Southeastern
.Urological Center here on rotating
days. Now we offer dermatology
services, plastic surgery, orthopedics,
gynecology, cardiology and cardio-
thoracic."He paused. "I'd love to find
a podiatrist to add to that list."
Huth noted that he had successfully
recruited a new pediatrician, with the
,. help of Dr. Ron Emerick. "Our new
p' pediatrician attended the University of
Florida and Nova, and is currently the
chief fellow in another pediatric

We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Testing results we
received from samples taken December 7, 2011 show that our system exceeds the
standards, or maximum contaminant levels (MCL), for Haloacetic Acids [Five] (HAA5s).
The standard for HAA5s is 60 ug/L, the average level of HAA5s over the last year was
65.8 ug/L.
What should I do?
Some people who drink water containing HAA5s in excess of the MCL over many years
may have an increased risk of getting cancer.
Any customers who are concerned about their exposure to DBPs may choose alternative
sources of water for ingestion.
What does this mean?
This is not an immediate risk. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately.
What is being done?
This is what we are doing to lower our DBPs levels: We are flushing the water system.
We anticipate resolving the problem within this time frame: as soon as possible.
For more information, please contact Chester McAfee, at (850) 584-7940.
Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those
who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing
homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or

Some people stay for awhile and even though they touch our

McGuire, Strawter selected

for Class 4A All State team

Two Taylor County High
seniors were selected to the first
team of the Class 4A All State
football team.
Offensive lineman Justin
McGuire and wide receiver
James Strawter were first-
team offense picks while
senior Bulldog quarterback
Eli Grambling and sophomore

On Saturday in

wide receiver Moral Stephens
made honorable mention.
Strawter, 6-1, 180 pounds,
led the Bulldogs in receptions
the last two years. He caught
a team-high 43 passes for 667
yards and 5 TDs this season and
had 38 receptions for 521 yards
and 2 TDs last year.
McGuire, 6-4, 265 pounds,

was one of the anchors on the
Bulldogs' senior-dominated
offensive line this past year,
TCHS Coach Steve Price
said.
"Justin played at a very high
level for us all year. While the
average fan may not understand
the meaning of our offensive
grading system, his grades

consistently rank among the top
of all offensive linemen that I
have ever coached.
"His scores led an offensive
line that consistently scored
very well all year. His game
against Florida High was
one of the highest scores
I have seen," the coach
said.

"We're never satisfied with

looking for new services to

Huth had great praise for the
hospital's surgeons and for the
number of surgeries performed
in December, which set a
new record. He also shifted
attention to Steinhatchee Clinic
and then to Mayo Clinic, for
which they will be dedicating a
new building today.
"Our cooks do a good job
in Windows Cafe," he added,
inviting everyone for a meal.

"Further, our home healthcare

in their families and he urged
all the club's members to

are surprised by the facility, as

that I generally break them
shortly after making them. So,
over the years I have learned
to take a different route to self-
improvement. I call it, "trying
something new." For some
unknown reason I have better
luck with commitment to my
"something new" than I do to
"resolutions."
With that in mind, I signed up
for Spanish classes at the local
library. My goal is to improve
on my conversation skills
enough to not embarrass myself
should I choose to engage in
conversation with a Spanish-

speaking person.
My love for the language
goes back to high school days
at Taylor County High School
when I was introduced to it
by Mrs. Marion Warren. I
remember her with affection for
her patience with our class. The
first day was an eye-opener to
me and I was instantly hooked.
I for one had never traveled
outside the occasional trip to
Georgia-and was not familiar
with the unique sounds that
seemed to roll off her tongue
with such ease and'enjoyment.
I decided right then and there I
could learn the beautiful sounds
she so easily produced. It was a
challenge for sure as she strived
to incorporate the romantic
language into the vocal chords
of a Taylor County native. To
this day my Spanish has not lost
the "southern" charm when I
attempt conversation.
But, all in all, I give her credit
for a solid background in basic
Spanish that has allowed me to
not feel too intimidated about
brushing up on my skill this
year.
Thus, my first class this past

Monday went well. I can say
I didn't* cower in the corner
when we were asked to recite
the alphabet in Spanish. I am so
pumped up by this encounter of
an echo from past learning that
I anticipate the next class with a
smile on my face.
The class will last three
months and the instructor, Amy
Hunter, has assured us we will
improve weekly as we immerse
ourselves in the language.
Following her advice to immerse
myself in Spanish I went to the
children's section of the library
and checked out the bi-lingual
book "The Three-Little Pigs." I
thought I could make good use
of my grandchildren's love for
stories being read to them and
at the same time I could "get
immersed."
It promises to be a real
bonding time except for the
blank look in their eyes as I tell
the story. Oh well, they love me
enough to cooperate in this new
phase of self-improvement by
acting involved.
Along with this new language
adventure for 2012 comes the
election. I love a good political

race with all the promises that
you know they can never fulfill!
Gets my blood flowing to hear
the debates....plus I have the
privilege to work the election
polls when voting time rolls
around.
I attended class yesterday to
brush up on the procedures a
poll worker needs. As you would
expect there are some changes
but all should move smoothly
for the Florida Primary slated
for Jan. 31.
I am of the opinion that my
vote does count and plan to
exercise this privilege as long as
it is available.
New Year...new opportunities
in 2012! Keep in mind,
yesterday is gone, tomorrow is
not here, but today is called the
present, make the best use of
it...it only lasts for 24 hours and
will never return.
My friend Velma Hingson is
one of the most giving people
I know. She and I compared
schedules this past week in hope
of finding a time for a lunch
date. We did, in February.
I look forward to time with
her, she is an inspiration as she

goes about doing for others.
Let this be your year to be
involved. There are things

'War Horse': an emotional tale

told through unexpected eyes

Some of the best stories are told from points of
view we may never have considered before.
That's the case with director Steven Spielberg's
"War Horse," which looks at devastation wrought
by war through the eyes of a horse drafted into the
conflict and the boy who wants nothing more than
to find him again.
With "Saving Private Ryan" and "Schindler's
List," Spielberg gave us indelible glimpses of the
horrors of World War II.
With "War Horse," however, Spielberg lets
go of the stark realism .
of those films for a more
sentimentalized tone he l'
mastered with movies like ,....
"E.T." and "The Terminal."
The result is a more
family-friendly film which".
is on its surface the story ..-4
of a horse, but on many
levels, it is also the story
of a war, or perhaps more -
accurately...war.
"War Horse" is
wonderfully executed,
although I would imagine
most viewers' final
impression of the film will
be based on their tolerance
for sentimentalism and
convenient coincidences.
For myself, the film's
successes vastly outweigh
its faults.
"War Horse" begins with
Albert Narracott (Jeremy
Irvine, "Life Bites")
admiring a new foal born on a neighboring farm in
his small English town. Later, in a drunken bit of
foolery, his'father (PeteeMtlitd "TPrhitg.ttivt d -
buys the horse, a move that may well bankrupt
the family.
Albert believes in the horse, which he names
Joey, and they set out to prove the thoroughbred
can be a farm worker.
With the family continuing to struggle
financially, however, and with the outbreak of
World War I, Joey is sold to the British calvary.
While the film's first act is necessary to develop
the emotional connection between Albert and
Joey, it is here where the film truly hits its stride,
mostly because it finally allows Joey to become
the main character he is meant to be.
During the course of the war, Joey will interact
with many people, from officers and enlisted
boys to the civilians caught in the middle of it all.

Through him, we are able to glimpse the global
conflict on very personal levels.
"War Horse" is on one hand a very large
film with grand battle sequences and sweeping
landscapes, but is also a very intimate story.
With a less deft hand at the reins, "War Horse"
could have easily felt emotionally manipulative,
but Speilberg manages to keep the film grounded
enough that, with a few exceptions in the final act,
it feels true.
"War Horse" was originally a children's novel
by Michael Morpurgo
before being converted
into a Tony Award-winning
play.
It is interesting to note
that in Morpurgo's original
book, the story is entirely
told from Joey's point
of view. Although that
wouldn't work in a film
format, the movie is at its
best when it is seen through
SJoey's eyes.
Like "Forrest Gump,"
which Spielberg also
directed, Joey is able
to give an outsider's
perspective on the events
as they unfold. While he
is very much a part of the
war, the unique view on its
effects makes "War Horse"
stand out.
Although Spielberg
gathered a wonderful cast,
the horses who play Joey
are the real stars. Credit must be given to the
trainers and crews who prepared them.forthe role.
- Still, it would 'tbe completeWith6-th tltim
actors which include Emily Watson ("Angela's
Ashes"), Niels Arestrup ("The Diving Bell and
the Butterfly"), David Thewlis ("Harry Potter
and the Prisoner of Azkaban") and Benedict
Cumberbatch ("Sherlock").
Although Spielberg's dam on the over-
sentimentalism beings to crack in the film's final
scenes, it's hard to argue how well crafted the rest
of the film is.
Parents should note, however, that while the
trailers give the impression "War Horse" is family
friendly throughout, there are several particularly
intense scenes depicting the effects of the war on
both the people and horses.
The film is rated PG-13 for intense sequences
of war violence.

Yes, plant it.

Thick layers of newspaper under mulch will put an absorbent, protective tier between the
mulch and the soil, thus cooling down the garden's environment. As the newspaper breaks
down, you can simply add more layers. If you want to change your flowerbed, just chop up
the layers and till underneath them, or add them to your compost pile.

If you like a natural border around your flowerbeds, your 50-cent newspaper can help
again. Dig a small trench around the bed, 4 to 6 inches deep and wide. Remove all grass or
weeds, then fill the trench with tightly-rolled newspapers, and tap each down until it sits
just below the outside edge of the trench. Then top with a thick layer of mulch and smooth
the area so the bed slopes to the grass edge. A good watering will settle the bed. Cheap

and easy to replace, this trench can act as a barrier as well as a mow strip. Keep the
area neat by running a hoe along the border to discourage creeping grass.
