County to

review RV

issue during

workshop

Tuesday

The Board of Taylor County
Commissioners will continue
their discussions over the
ongoing issue of recreational
vehicles along the coast during
a workshop Tuesday.
According to officials, the
board will discuss possible
options to consider at an
upcoming public hearing set
for Tuesday, Jan. 18.
Although Tuesday's
workshop is open to the public,
the board does not plan to take
comments. The workshop
begins at 3 p.m. at the
Courthouse Annex on Green
Street.
The commission spent about
two and a half hours on the
topic during a hearing in
December, but could not reach
a decision and ultimately
continued it for Jan. 18.
At issue during the hearings
were two proposed changes to
the county's land development
code referring to density and
setbacks for RVs in certain
flood zones and land use
categories.
The county does not
currently have regulations
concerning RV density, but
state statutes say that any
property with more than four
RVs must conform with
requirements for an RV park.
This has created a de facto
maximum of four RVs per lot.

Leola's

legacy

A life dedicated to greater service

Leola Glenn
Editor's Note: Leola Glenn was a rock to her family and the children
within the community she called her own. Her death last week has left
many of them wondering what they will do without her. The answer to that
question can be found in the following tribute written by Anthony White last
year as he reflected on how she "taught by doing." Her greatest legacy to
"larger service" shines through in the lives of her children.
We pledged our heads to clearer thinking.
Our hearts to greater loyalty.
Our hands to larger service; and our health to better living for
our club, our community, our country and our world.
We were members of the Jerkins Heights 4-H Club, a group of
local Black teens who, under the guidance of Leola Glenn, Mary
Lee Williams and Mildred Alexander, became one of Florida's top
4-H clubs.
It's hard to believe that more than 30 years have passed since we
were dubbed, Leola's children. It seems like yesterday. Maybe it's
the occasional reminders from folks who remember the tireless
effort Mrs. Leola put into making the club and its members
successful. It wasn't too long ago that I heard Mildred refer to me
as "one of Leola's boys."
Both Mildred and "Runt," which we fondly still call Williams,
worked full-time jobs, but still managed to put a great deal of time
and effort into the club. However, Mrs. Leola worked as a program
assistant with the County Extension Office, which allowed her to
spend most of her workday, and nearly all of her free time,
assisting club members.
I became a member of the Jerkins Heights 4-H Club in 1978
soon after it was formed. Our club leaders allowed us to choose
whatever project areas we wanted to focus on. So, with 12
members and all with different likes, the club became a multi-
interest 4-H club.
Mrs. Leola worked hard to make us believe that we were "the
little 4-H club that could." And she didn't mind getting in the
trenches with us.
When I organized the Taylor County Community Garden, which
was located where the county health department now sits, she was
present at every meeting. And, she was there nearly every day,
from plowing and planting to weeding and harvesting, with a
carload of club members.
When it came time to gather cattails and pampas grass to make
items for our yearly harvest sale, she led our raids on area creeks.
She helped us organize community projects. Conduct research.
Write and practice speeches. Complete our individual and club
projects. And prepare for competitions.

She chauffeured us to and from wherever we had to be. And,
when we didn't want to go or do what we were supposed to, Mrs.
Leola made us go and do it anyway.
I can't speak for the other club members, but I know why she
seldom had any problems keeping me in check.
My grandmother, the
disciplinarian of the family, had
told me from the start that "Mrs.
Leola is me when I'm not there,"
so I knew better than to
misbehave.
Mrs. Leola's discipline was a
disappointed nod of the head V
followed by, "Now Anthony."
However, if my grandmother
heard about the disappointed nod .. '
or the "Now Anthony," it was on.
Mrs. Leola taught by doing.
Her dedication to our work made ."
us even more committed. One
year, my best friend and club
member, Charles Ellis Jr. (Koski) A young Leola
and I quit the county recreation Robinson Glenn
department's All-Star baseball
team to prepare for state 4-H competitions in Gainesville. It was a
tough choice, but I think we did the right thing.
It didn't take long for all the effort to pay off.
In 1978, Sherry Tensley won the state's most fashionable model
award in the fashion and sewing competition.
In 1980, two members of our club were chosen as state winners.
I was the state's horticulture and gardening winner and Robin
Williams won the state's consumer education award. A few months
later, we competed against 49 other state winners at the National 4-
H Congress in Chicago and I won the national horticulture title.
The next year, our club produced two more state winners: Koski,
in horticulture and gardening, and Nancy Jackson in baking. Both
went on to compete at the 1981 National 4-H Congress and Koski
walked away with the horticulture and gardening title.
That same year, I won the state's highest honor and represented
Florida at the National 4-H Dansforth Leadership Conference in
Washington, D.C.. While at the weeklong conference, I toured the
White House, dined with congressmen in the Capitol, and was in
the audience about eight rows back during screen legend Katharine
Hepburn's performance in the stage play, "West Side Waltz." All
that week, I remember thinking' how far I was from home and I
wasn't just contemplating distance.
The following year two other Jerkins Heights 4-H Club
members became state winners. Sylvia Flowers won in consumer
education and Anthony Sneed won in entomology. They both
represent lonrida at ethe'1atioial 4-H Congress.
And in 1984, club member Carla Williams was selected as the
state winner in the citizenship and community service category and
competed at nationals in Chicago.
Mrs. Leola, Mary Lee and Mildred were the driving forces
behind the Jerkins Heights 4-H Club, but there were countless
others who contributed to our success.
Former extension agents Henry Davis and Carol Mott made
everything we did possible through their commitment and
guidance. Mr. Davis, Mrs. Mott, then later Clay Olson and
Deborah Humphries, made sure the opportunities were there for us

violations were uncovered
during a probe of the elections
office, but indictments were not
handed down "at this time."
The violations, according to
the jury, involved mishandling
of absentee ballots "to
influence the outcome of
elections."

FOREST FESTIVAL
Larry Harrington, district
forester, was named the 1976
chairman of the Florida Forest
Festival.

WHO WAS MERRY?

Smith for the festive
transformation of a well in their

front yard, and Mr. and Mrs.
Fred A. Miller for the children's
theme category, accomplished
by a life-size Santa, sleigh,
reindeer and snow family.

SAUNDERS TO CHAIR
DEVELOPMENT
AUTHORITY
The five new appointees of
the Taylor County
Development Authority elected
Stan Saunders to serve as
chairman for a two-year period.
Bill C. Williams agreed to
serve as vice chairman and
Robert Lynn as treasurer.

WEDDINGS
Dottie Hendry and Michael
Spradley were united in
marriage in a candlelight
ceremony at the First United
Methodist Church, before 1975
came to a close.
As the new year began,
Rebecca Elizabeth Morris and
and Donald Henry Holton
announced their intentions to
marry, as did Cheryl Lynn
Askew and Richard B. Stump
Jr.

END-OF-THE-YEAR
CLEARANCE
Jackson's Furniture
Company closed out the year
with a whale of a sale. Coffee
tables were $18, love seats
were $188, end tables were
$17, watches started at $19.95
and a chest freezer was $229.
At the Piggy Wiggly, China
Doll black-eyed peas were 19
cents for a 12-oz. package.
Jeannie Wells and Ernestine
Wells were added to the Wells
Real Estate Company which
listed a three-bedroom, two-
bath home for $24,900.

and Mrs. Leola made sure we took advantage of them.
The extension office was always open to us. Office secretaries
Jackie Griner and Nellie Cruce made sure all our applications,
project proposals and record books were organized, neatly typed
and submitted on time. Program assistants and volunteers like Gail
Wisenbaker helped with our various projects on and off the clock.
We often partnered with several other Taylor County 4-H'ers--
Andy, Clay, and Marilyn Bethea, Sherri and Loma Mott, and
Allison Wisenbaker--to name a few, to organize and complete
various projects, so they were part of many of our achievements.
And a number of local businesses, including Doctors' Memorial
Hospital, the local newspaper, Buckeye and all of the local
nurseries were there to help when we needed them.
By the end of 1984, all of the club's original members had
graduated from high school and went off to college, which meant
the Jerkins Heights 4-H Club could have faded into history. But
that didn't happen. The club still had Mrs. Leola and a group of
young, new members, including Gilda Alexander, Toborrah
Henderson, Sonja and Benji Glenn, and Marcie Stewart for her to
shape into winners. And win they did. Just like the club's original
members, they brought home several county, district, state and
national awards.
The Jerkins Heights 4-H Club's winning streak finally came to
an end in 1996-97 when Mrs. Leola retired. The club's closing was
a sad occasion for her, but only because it was over. Having
garnered 27 state and national titles, her "little 4-H club that could"
had actually done it. And she was satisfied.
Leola's children had made her proud.

No more

promises
:xtwnsS . 4fAiW* .A
'.- *Ar d ** v ,
I never made a promise that I didn't try to keep.
This time last year, I made a list of things that I
promised myself I would do before 2010 was over.
The year 2010 is now history and more than a few
of the things on that list are still undone.
I promised to get more rest because time has
taught me that a body my age does not and cannot
get by on three or four hours of sleep like it once
did. Throughout the year, I tried to get more rest,
but I couldn't talk Father Time into making the
days longer than 24 hours. So, I don't blame myself
for not being able to keep this promise.
This time last year, I promised to stop being a
procrastinator. This gesture wasn't just for my
benefit. Family members, friends and co-workers
all cheered when they heard that I would no longer
subject them to my last-minute way of doing
things. They were ecstatic when they thought the
days of waiting for me to get ready, to call or to
show up were over. However, after days, weeks and
months passed with them still waiting for me, they
accused me of abandoning my promise to stop
procrastinating even after I assured them I would
start working on it tomorrow.
Those weren't the only promises I made this time
last year that I haven't managed to keep.
I promised myself that I would spend more time
doing things that I really wanted to do instead of
filling my days with things I had to do. I wanted to
take piano lessons, walk a marathon, learn to
speak Spanish (again), make peace with a few
former friends, take a road trip down the Pacific
Coast Highway, go up in a plane intent on
skydiving then chicken out and go back to college
to complete my graduate degrees. However, instead
of doing or even attempting to do any of these
things, I filled my days with the same-old-same-old.
I was supposed to laugh more and work harder.
All I can say is, I tried.
I promised to eat less and exercise more, but
somehow I've managed to gain 12 pounds since
this time last year.
And, I promised to make 2010 one of the best
years of my life. Let's just say, I was glad to see
2010 end.
Some of the promises on my list were made to
other people. And, because they were to other
people, I went out of my way to make sure I kept
them.
This time last year, I promised my then three-
year-old niece Kennadle that I wasn't going to move
away in 2010. After her father, my brother Ken,
passed two years ago, and her grandmother, my
mother, passed last year, I knew this was a promise
I had to keep. I just hope she doesn't ask me to
make the same promise about 2011.
And, I promised Mrs. Jessie Alexander that she
would see me sitting in the church pews at Temple
of God Baptist Church more often in 2010 than she
had during 2009. I would like to believe I kept that
promise to her, but I hope she wasn't counting.
This time last year, I made quite a few promises
to myself and to others. But this year, I'm only
going to make one promise and that is to stop
making promises.
That one shouldn't be too hard to keep.

Happy 13th Birthday
Haley Brooke Lago
January 10, 2011
When you came into our lives you were the smallest,
most beautiful baby girl. We had only begun to know
the joy that you would bring to us. You filled our
hearts with love and our faces with smiles from the
very moment we held you in our arms:

Then... We blinked...
Now you stand before us a smart, talented, athletic
and ever so beautiful young lady. With every day that
passes you continue to bring so much joy into our lives.
You continue to be the sunshine in our days. You make
us proud with everything you do and say. We are so
grateful that God gave you to us, to love and cherish.
We hope that being 13 brings you all the joy, pride
and smiles that you bring to us each day.
Have a super great birthday.
Love you bunches,
Mama & Daddy

The December committee of Marne Helberg, Esther Ehle, Jeanne Hilgendorf and
Cindy Bishop displays toys gathered for distribution to deserving local children.

Roseheads collected toys

for Christmas deliveries
The Roseheads of Perry, chapter 2207 of the Red Hat Society, held their annual Christmas party on
Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at 9:30 a.m., in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church. The planning
committee included Marne Helberg, Jeanne Hilgendorf, Esther Ehle and Cindy Bishop. There were
26 members and two guests present. This Breakfast Tea was catered by Joyce's Main Street Cafe.
As each lady arrived, she put her donation of a child's toy in the box. The round tables were covered
with white tablecloths and set with Christmas china. In each chair, the committee had placed a gift
bag containing candies, an ornament and a magnetic clip; at each place setting were a small Christmas
lighthouse and a trivet--all gifts for each lady from the December Committee. Christmas music played
softly in the background.
Hilgendorf rang the Red Hat bell. Helberg welcomed everyone and introduced the caterer, Joyce
Fletcher. Ehle said the blessing. A large variety of delicious food and beverages were beautifully
presented on the buffet as well as fresh fruits on a tiered server in the center of each table.
Cheryl Gregory asked for volunteers for planning future monthly gatherings. Barbara Patrick
volunteered to chair January; Debi Limoges offered to chair February; and Velma Towles will head
the March committee. These events will be held on the last Saturday of each month. Alice Brady
reported on the success of the Relay For Life team's bake sale during the Downtown SnowFest.
Secretary / Treasurer Limoges gave a full treasurer's report for the year-end. She continued to
collect 2011 dues. Members were reminded to report any change of address or phone number to
Martelle Shiver. Everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to mother / daughter Esther Ehle and Cindy
Bishop, each wearing a purple hat and a red outfit. Guests were introduced. They included Hilda
Armstrong's sister, Selma Sauls from Tallahassee and Helberg's friend, Cindy Brown of Cedar Island.
Names were then drawn for a variety of door prizes.
Cookie Workman complimented the December hostesses for planning "this wonderful time."
Everyone showed their agreement by applause. Members were reminded to watch for details of the
Jan. 29 luncheon. The group's collection of toys was prepared for distribution closer to Christmas to
deserving local children. The greeting from all the Roseheads was an enthusiastic, "Merry Christmas
and Happy New Year!"

Just One Request
Dear Master for this coming
year, just one request I bring; I
do not pray for happiness, or
any earthly thing--I do not ask
to understand the way Thou
leadest me, but this I ask:
Teach me to do the thing that
pleaseth Thee.
I want to know Thy guiding
voice, to walk with Thee each
day. Dear Master, make me
swift to hear and ready to obey.
And thus the year I now begin,
a happy year will be--if I am
seeking just to do the thing that
pleaseth Thee. --Unknown

Joe Matt and Tyler ( 8 years
old ) of Chula, Ga., had their
limit of trout while fishing
suspending MirrOlures in 5 6
feet of water.
That's about it for this week!

The NFL Thursday named
Tampa Bay Buccaneers running
back LeGarrette Blount its
offensive rookie of the month
for December.
Blount and Bucs wide
receiver Mike Williams along
with St. Louis Rams quarterback
Sam Bradford seem to be the
favorites in the voting for NFL's
Offensive Rookie of the Year
award.
In the final five games of
the regular season, Blount led
the NFL in rushing with 511
yards on 87 carries (5.9 avg.)
including two touchdowns. He
was also tied for the league lead
in most runs of 10-plus yards
with 14.
With runs of 20, 48 and 53
yards in Week 16 against Seattle,
Blount had a career-high 164
yards rushing on 18 carries (9.1
average) in the Buccaneers' 38-
15 victory.
Those 164 yards were the

most by a Bucs back since
Warrick Dunn rushed for 210
yards on 22 carries against
Dallas on Dec. 3, 2000, and
the seventh-most rushing
yards in a single game in team
history.
The performance also marked
the first 150-plus yard rusher for
the Buccaneers since Carnell
Williams had 150 rushing yards
on 31 carries against Atlanta on
Dec: 24,2005.
Blount is just the fifth
Buccaneer player ever to win
the NFL Offensive Rookie
of the Month Award and the
first since Williams won the
award twice during the 2005
season.
Fullback Mike Alstott (1996),
running back Warrick Dunn
(1997) and quarterback Shaun
King (1999) also won the
award.
With 1,007 rushing yards,
Blount led all rookie running

time for spring baseball to
begin.
Any volunteers or coaches are
welcome to sign up too. There
is a place for everyone.
Sign-up will be at Taylor
Photography on U.S. 19 South
or The Fair Store in downtown
Perry/
For more information, call
584-8919 or 584-7429.

Tampa Bay running back LeGarrette Blount breaks
loose for a 1 6-yard run during the last game of the
season against the New Orleans Saints. Blount, who was
named the Rookie of the Month for December, became
only the second undrafted free agent in NFL history to
rush for more than 1,000 yards in his rookie season.

MAMA GERTIE
Continued from page 1
Rev. Charlie L. Baskin Jr. were
married on Christmas Day,
Dec. 25, 1926.
Better known as "Mama
Gertie," Baskin said her earliest
memories took her back to
Athena and living behind a
turpentine still that her father
operated.
In those days, she said, "you
didn't have to worry about
finding a job--a job was already
there when you got there...you
were in the field or in the tub.
You just had to fit it."
Though she never completed
grade school, she used her
abilities, skills and experiences
to provide a better life for both
herself and her family. Even
when she was no longer
working outside the home, she
continued to serve her
community by aiding with the
distribution of commodities
and assisting with the "Meals
on Wheels" program.
Even at 100, Baskin
remained fiercely independent
and stayed up most nights until
11 p.m.
When asked about her secret
to long life, she was quick to
say "trust in the Lord."

consideration would limit the
density to one RV per 2,500
square feet, or two for a
standard 100 foot by 50 foot
lot.
The proposed language,
which affects those properties
in the AE and VE flood zones,
states: "In the Water Oriented
Commercial (CWO) land use
classification and all land use
categories allowing residential
densities greater than 1 unit per
2 acres, recreational vehicles
conforming to section 42-
652(c) and not sited within an
approved recreational vehicle
park shall not exceed one unit
per 2,500 square feet."
According to Planning
Director Danny Griner, the
change would affect those in
the mixed-use urban
development category, but
would have little affect on
those in other categories such
as agriculture.
At December's hearing, the
board was split, with
commissioners Pam Feagle
and Pat Patterson against
passing the change and leaving
the limit at four, and
commissioners Malcolm Page
and Mark Wiggins for
lowering the limit to one per
standard lot.
Commission Chairman
Lonnie Houck, whose district
includes most of the properties
which would be affected by the
change, stated he was in favor
of a density of two.

Baskin was a longtime
member of New Brooklyn
Missionary Baptist Church,
where her husband had served
as pastor for many years.
Family and friends will
gather Saturday, Jan. 8, at First
Baptist Church to celebrate her
life during services that begin
at noon.

New releases will try to find room

at theaters amongst 2010 holdovers

Some of the year's best acting can

be found within 'The King's Speech'

For good or ill, we often judge our leaders
on their ability to speak and make speeches.
Regardless of what you think of their politics
or accomplishments, former president George
W. Bush will always be viewed as poor public
speaker, especially compared to his successor,
Barack Obama.
What many people forget, however, is that
before the invention of the radio, most Americans
never heard their presidents speak. Transportation
limitations did not allow for the many stump
stops politicians can enjoy today, so newspapers
and other periodicals were the

population, just when the Nazis were threatening
to spread across Europe and beyond.
"The King's Speech" is both a powerful
historical drama and a very personal tale of
overcoming life's obstacles.
The story, from screenwriter David Seidler,
provides an intriguing look into the lives of
British royalty, who even after more than 200
years of independence still fascinate us on this
side of the pond. It is a reminder than being born
into privilege almost means you don't have a
choice in taking up the associated responsibility.

boggetowne will return Jan. 29Il i,,

For two weekends each year,
the clear blast of trumpets
mingles with the laughter of
children as the Kingdom of
Hoggetowne opens its gates.
Performers in period garb sing
and dance in the streets, while
knights joust on horseback and
magicians captivate the crowds.
Tucked away in the enchanted
forest of the Alachua County
Fairgrounds in Gainesville,
this medieval marketplace will
come to life on Jan. 29-30 and
Feb. 4-6.
Hoggetowne is home to
more than 160 talented artisans
from across the country who
:journey to the faire to sell
and demonstrate their wares,
offering medieval crafts such
as weaving, blacksmithing,
leatherworking, wood carving
and glass blowing. Fairgoers

can browse through a selection
of delicate medieval jewelry or
glimpse into their future with a
mystical fortune teller.
"Visitors should arrive
early to take full advantage
of the exciting medieval
magic," said Linda Piper, faire
coordinator. "Each morning
all the entertainers greet the
Hoggetowne guests as the city
gates open to this enchanted
kingdom."
The sound of applause echoes
from the faire's eight stages,
where the forgotten skills of full-
flight falconry, gripping aerial
acrobatics and old-world magic
come to life. Jugglers, knife
throwers and gypsy dancers add
to the excitement as they fill the
streets of Hoggetowne.
One of the Faire's most
popular attractions is the joust,

where knights in full body
armor, battle on horseback.
Children can meet the knights
and their steeds, or they can
watch the living chess match.
Visitors can also engage in
traditional medieval games
of chance and skill. They can
shoot arrows or hurl battle axes
at targets, or they can navigate
their way through a winding
maze.
On Saturday and Sundays,
the faire is open from 10 a.m. to
6 p.m. and costs $14 for adults
and $7 for children ages 5 to
17. The faire is free for children
under 5. The Alachua County
Fairgrounds is located east of
Gainesville at 2900 NE 39th
Ave. adjacent to airport.
