Near mouth of Steinhatchee River

64 acres offered to county

By MARK VIOLA
Staff writer
Just months after purchasing
the former Ideal Marina
property in Steinhatchee, the
county is poised to accept a
donation of 64 acres nearby in
the community.
The Taylor County
Commission held a special

meeting Tuesday to discuss the
proposed donation from the
Conservancy Partnership, LLC.
The main parcel in question,
which consists of 61.98 acres,
is near the mouth of the
Steinhatchee River south of
Fifth Avenue North and east of
Sixth Street West. A second,
two-acre parcel, adjacent to the

larger property to the east, will
also be donated.
After discussing the issue
and hearing from Conservancy
representative Jennifer Ellison,
the board agreed in a 4-0 vote
to accept the donation
contingent on several
outstanding debts being paid
off regarding the property.

Ellison, who is one of the
partners in the Conservancy,
addressed the board, thanking
them for calling the meeting
"on such short notice."
She gave a history of the
property, which she said the
conservancy purchased for
$2.66 million.
With the economic

downturn, however, she said
the Conservancy has found
itself in "financial trouble."
According to Ellison, some
$972,000 is still owed to
Capital City Bank on the
property along with $95,000 in
back taxes.

Shoplifters nabbed

after car, foot chase

Two shoplifters were nabbed after simultaneous foot and car
chases involving a number of law enforcement officers Tuesday.
The incident began when both women--later identified as
Samonza Gentile, 21, and LaDovie J. Thomas, 22, both of
Perry--attempted to walk out of Payless Shoes with numerous
items without paying for them.
When the store manager told them there was video showing
them stealing the items, they turned around and each threw two
pairs of shoes into the store.
"One of the females got into a car and drove away while the
other ran from the area," Perry Police Department (PPD) Ptl. Bill
Murray said.
Miirray was able to stop the suspect (Thomas) who was driving
away; when he questioned her, she stated that "she had not stolen
anything from Payless."
After arresting Thomas and removing her from her car, officers
found numerous items in the back seat in plain view with Bealls
outlet tags on the merchandise. They also found five packs ofT00
percent human hair extensions.
The second suspect, Gentile, was also apprehended after a brief
footchase through a nearby neighborhood. Three pairs of shoes
were found in hpr purse along with approximately 11 grams of
marijuana and a marijuana cigarette.
During questionitig, both women admitted to retail thefts from

Taylor's unemployment rate jumps to 12.5 %

Taylor County's
unemployment rate erased two
months of positive moves in
November, jumping to 12.5
percent.
The rise was almost a full
percentage point from
October's rate of 11.7 percent,
placing the county's
unemployment rate near July
and August's high of 12.6

percent.
There were 1,112 people
unemployed in the county in
November out of a labor force
of 8,871, according to figures
released by the Agency for
Workforce Innovation (AWI)
last week. It was the 14th
straight month during which
the county had more than a
1,000 people unemployed.

Meanwhile, the number of
reported initial unemployment
claims was 102 in November,
continuing a six-month trend
with the figure above 100.
Compared to the 67 counties
across the state, Taylor had the
25th highest unemployment
rate in August. Hendry County
continued to top the list with
17.9 percent while Liberty once

Parker's a star!

ago when her friends "helped"
her on stage. And the rest, they
say, is history.
Last year, Parker decided to
enter Tallahassee's You Can Be
a Star talent competition,
sponsored by Capital City
Bank. Eliminated in the semi-
final round, Parker decided to
try it again.
It was a good decision,
because the singer was recently
named the grand prize winner,
edging out 11 other competitors
for a trip for two to New York
City, including a backstage tour

of a Broadway show.
"I haven't really been singing
in public for very long," Parker
said.
"I started when I was 15
when my friends decided to
force me on stage."
Before that time, Parker
admits she was very shy.
"Even my dog wasn't a good
audience," she said.
Last year's competition was
her first such event and she
only decided to try it after
being e-mailed the details.
"I thought, if I win, it'd be
great. If I don't, it'd be a fun
experience.
"This year I wanted to do it
again because I had so much
fun last year," she said.
Parker added that she also

Auditions were held in July,
with Parker as one of 12
performers who made it

judge panel. The rest of the
competitions were held in
conjunction with the

Santa's helpers
Santa drafted a few special "elves" to help spread Christmas cheer this year.
(R to I) Sheriff L.E. "Bummy" Williams, Sherra Edwards, Deputy Dewayne
Bowden, Deputy Darell Upshaw and Deputy Pam Brasby, shown with Robertica
Mango, 9, delivered food and gifts to four local families Wednesday. The
deliveries were in conjunction with the Christmas Connection, part of Catholic
Charities of North Florida which assisted some 500 families throughout the Big
Bend region this year.

Editor's Note: The power and beauty of some stories never fades.
Such is the case of this award-winning column written by the late Sharon
,Carroll in 1985 as part of her weekly Editor's Corner. The piece won the
Sally Latham Memorial Award through the Florida Press Association that
same year.
Periodically, one of my several rude friends will ask
me why it is that I insist on having at the top of my
Christmas tree an angel who looks like she spent the
night in the back seat of a Chevrolet.
It's a fair question, and one that deserves a better
answer than my usual reply, which is "Be quiet, you
swine."
* I've been sharing my Christinases with this t
Particular angel for about 16 years, and have
developed an irrational attachment to her.
Sixteen years ago, I was not the independent,
ornery person many of you have come to know and
tolerate. Back then, I was not much more than a
very young woman with some very big problems who
didn't know beans about much of anything.
Like everyone else in my generation, I had been
raised on the Ten Commandments, the Golden Rule,
the Pledge of Allegiance and the general doctrine that
if you do the right things and behave yourself,
*everything in your life will turn out just fine.
SLike I said, I didn't know beans.
Also, like everyone else in my generation, I married
the nicest boy in town and was all set to have a
regular, normal American life when, as history will
attest, the whole world went crazy.
My husband, like all the other good American boys,
went off to Vietnam to serve his country. When he
returned, he had a radically altered personal agenda.
(In case you weren't around back then, there was
nothing unusual about this.)
Suffice to say that he was no longer interested in
'having a regular, normal life. He had decided that his
.true destiny was to become a recording star, and to
ingest as many dangerous, illegal drugs as possible,
'preferably in the company of long-haired, teenaged
maidens with names like "Moonbeam" and
"Rainbow."
Admirable as these goals may have been, they were
hardly compatible with being a husband and

father. So he wandered off in pursuit of rock
and roll paradise, and I didn't hear from him
again for 10 years.
Thus, 16 years ago, there I was: a very young
woman who didn't know beans, in a cold house, with
no money, no job, no job skills, no idea what to do
next, and a beautiful golden-haired child in my
arms.
(I need hardly add here that when I was a little girl
leaping around ballet class in a pink tutu, this was
not the future I had envisioned.)
As always happens during catastrophes, several

my life was, in fact, ruined.

Still, it was Christmas
and you can't just let that
Just a little angel with ugly top branch poke
tattered wings skyward, even if your life
is ruined and you have no
money. So I started foraging around to see what I
could find.
I found one of those cardboard things that remains
when the toilet paper is gone, and an old round glass
ornament. Those would be the face and body. I found
some discarded satin drapery material (a page from
Scarlett's book) and some lace scraps. Those would
be her dress. I borrowed some acrylics and painted
on her face, and glued on some "hair" from an old
doll a neighbor had thrown away. I cut her wings
from cardboard, and covered them with cloth.
Then I found an old cross that had been in my
jewelry box since the seventh grade, and hung it
around her neck. Then I put her up on top of the
tree.
She was beautiful. I remember staring at her for a
long, long time, amazed that I had been able to do
that. Somehow, I had never thought of myself as a
person who could do things. But as I looked at her,
it occurred to me that there might be other things I
could do. That there might be things inside me that
even I didn't even know about. I remember feeling
surprised and more than a little excited.
In a certain sense, I could almost say that my life
began the night I made the angel. I was introduced,
as it were, to a new person: Sharon Carroll, a
woman who can do things.
Since then, I have done many things I never
dreamed of 16 years ago. I went to college, graduated
with honors, undertook graduate study and achieved
a position in the highly rewarding (but not especially
lucrative) field of journalism.
In these years, many things have changed. My
golden child has grown up and is off to college in the
fall. The angel's wings disintegrated in 1976 and
were replaced with chicken feathers. My ex-hippie,
ex-husband became a born again Christian instead
of a recording star. And I have had a life I wouldn't
trade for anyone's.
Along the way, I learned many things, but the most
important thing I ever learned is that there is no
such thing as a ruined life. Once you know that,
nothing can ever seriously defeat you.
It's a lesson I won't forget. Every year, my angel
reminds me.

Then finally, the sun came up.
The night before Christmas is still the
holiest, busiest and hardest night of the
year to sleep through. I just wish I was still
trying to sleep through it in my

Remember

when...

By ANTHONY L.WHITE

The night

before Christmas

SIt was the holiest night, the busiest night
and the hardest night of the year to sleep
through. Such was the night before
Christmas at my grandparents' house.
There was never a quiet or dull moment
between sunset Christmas Eve and sunrise
Christmas morning around my
grandparents' house. When the sun began
to set on Christmas Eve, my brothers and
cousins started getting dressed for the
Christmas program at church. With 11
children living under one roof, getting
dressed was a well-choreographed and
executed task.
After everyone was dressed, my
grandmother, mother and aunts who had
been prepping Christmas dinner since
early that morning, placed a ham or turkey
in the oven, turned the stovetop burners
on simmer, and then told our grandfather
and uncles to watch the kitchen while they
took a break to attend the Christmas
program.
My grandfather's brother, the Rev. Walter
White, was pastor of Mt. Nebo M.B. Church
which was down the street from our house.
My older cousin, Dot, Uncle Walter's
daughter, was director of the Christmas
program and had spent the past four
weeks writing speeches and teaching us to
sing songs like, "Away in a Manager,"
"Mary Had a Baby," "Silent Night," and my
personal favorite, "Do You Hear What I
Hear?" n
Before my cousin, Walter Mae, the
church secretary, could finish the
announcements or Uncle Walter could
finish singing, "God be with you until we
meet again," which closed every service at
Mt. Nebo, we were running down the road
pulling out the sparklers and skyrockets
that our grandmother had told us to leave
at home.
While my mother and aunts returned to
the kitchen to prepare a faster-than-fast-
food dinner of hot dogs and Kool-Aid, my
grandmother sat on the porch and watched
as we built a fire in the yard and made the
sky above the house and street a no-fly
zone, which wasn't that smart considering
it was Christmas Eve.
After dinner but before going to bed, there
was one more thing the kids had to do. All
the gifts under the Christmas tree were for
people who were not on Santa's list, so,
anticipating the space Santa would need
for all of our gifts, instead of hanging our
stockings by the chimney, my brothers,
cousins, and I got busy rearranging and
moving furniture out the living room.
When we were finally nestled all snug in
our beds, it was impossible to sleep
because of the sounds and scents coming
from the kitchen, living room and yard. We
could smell cakes and pies baking. We
could hear our neighbor and perhaps one
of my favorite people ever, Lucy Kaye
Jones, coming in and out of the house
throughout the night to bring my
grandmother samples of the dinner she
was preparing at home and to sample my
grandmother's dinner. And, then there was
all the commotion my mother, aunts and
uncles Charles and Mike were making in
the living room and yard. It was like trying
to sleep at a construction site.
Around 5 a.m., and after managing to get
a few winks in, my uncle Mike sounded the
trumpet. Ten minutes later, the girls were
playing on the merry-go-round and swing
Santa had left in the yard, while the boys
suited up in their new football pads and
uniforms for the Christmas Bowl which
was played under the moonlight in the dirt

A time to reflect on a loving God
"...for he careth for you" (I Peter 5:7)
This is truly a season that invites reflection on a loving God who
cares. Apart from the clatter and noise, the hustle and bustle, the
trees and lights, the gift wrap and ribbon, the Santas and sparkle...
there is always the quiet, but pressing voice of God Himself
reminding us that He indeed stepped out of eternity and into times
nearly 2,000 years ago to give us the ultimate gift that history will
ever know...His own Son! Come worship with us!

Tew
December 22, 1967

July 8, 1991
If we'd only had a little more time,
The day you passed away,
we'd have had one more chance to tell you
All the things we wanted to say.
We didn't get to tell you how much you meant to us,
that you were the best son and friend,
The very best and the one who held our trust,
And we would love you to the end.
The last time that we talked to you
we wish we would have known.
We would have again told you we loved you,
and kept you a little longer on the phone.
If we'd only had five more minutes,
the evening you passed away,
We'd have given you one last hug so tight,
We'd treasure one more great big smile.
We'd have told you that we wouldn't want
To live without you, not even for awhile.
We'd have kissed your cheek and taken your hand
And asked you to please don't go.
We'd tell you how much we'd miss you,
Much more than you would ever know.
But you were gone so quickly,
one last ride you'd take.
Before we even knew it,
you were standing at heaven's gate.
We were so sad and broken hearted,
And much too soon for all of us,
God called right then for you,
He said it was time to get your wings.
And leave this life behind you,
your time to enjoy all of heaven's beautiful things.
So wait for us in heaven Trey,
We know you are not alone.
That day now long ago, the angels came for you,
we know one day you'll come to bring us home.

Tax credit will outweigh debt

64 ACRES
Continued from page 1
"There is a currently a note
with Capital City Bank and I
have the money that has been
transferred into my trust
account to cover that loan," she
said.
The taxes will also be paid
off, she said, along with
approximately $35,000 in
document stamps required for
the donation.
Ellison said that while the
offer seemed "last minute," the
idea to donate the property
began this past summer, when
she was serving on an
economic recovery panel
following the Deepwater
Horizon oil spill and spoke to
someone from the Florida Fish
and Wildlife Conservation
Committee.
It was only recently, that
she thought about donating the
property to the county
rather than the state,
she said.
County Attorney Conrad
Bishop said he had reviewed

the issue and said the
Conservancy stands to make
more from the tax credit for the
donation than the debts they are
paying off.
Answering questions from
commissioners, County
Administrator Jack Brown said
the taxes will be paid off
through fiscal year 2010.
Beginning next year, the
property will be off the tax
rolls, reducing tax revenues by
$19,875.
The large parcel was
involved in a wetland
disturbance violation by the
Conservancy several years ago,
which resulted in fines and an
ordered restoration program.
The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA)
determined that the
Conservancy violated the
Clean Water Act for
"discharging or directing the
discharge of dredged and/or fill
material into waters of the
United States."
According to Ellison, the
issue arose when they removed
stumps after clearing some

timber on the property. She said
the fines were against the
individual officers, herself
included, and not the property
so they would not be passed
onto the county. Even so, she
said she would sign a document
indemnifying the county from
the fines.
Brown said he contacted the
EPA and confirmed what
Ellison said, adding that the
Conservancy is near the end of
the monitoring phase of
replanting efforts required by
the agency.
If any issue arises during the
monitoring, it would fall back
to the Conservancy and not the
county, he said.
Although no specific plans
were mentioned during
Tuesday's meeting, Brown said
the county would have multiple
options for the property,
including using it for county
facilities, selling all or
part of it in the future when the
economy improves or
swapping it for other
property.
He added that approximately

16 acres have been successfully
changed from the agriculture
classification to mixed-used
urban development.
Property Appraiser Bruce
Ratliff also spoke, calling the
donation "very unique and
beneficial."
He pointed out that the state
or other agencies own some
98,000 acres in Taylor County,
adding, "I would hate to see
any more head in the same
direction."
"All of my questions have
been satisfactorily answered,"
Commission Malcolm Page
said before making a motion to
have chairman Lonnie Houck
sign the document and have
Bishop hold the document
until the deed is presented with
a clean owners and
encumbrance report, along with
a receipt to show the taxes have
been paid.
Commissioner Mark
Wiggins seconded and the
measured passed 4-0.
Commissioner Pam Feagle was
not present due to prior
commitments.

PARKER'S A STAR

said of singing at the GetDown,
which at the time was by far her
largest crowd. "This year I was
still nervous, but it wasn't as
jarring."
The public was able to vote
during the GetDown as well as
online through the next week,
and Parker once again made it
through to the semifinals.
On Nov. 12, she was in front
of the crowd again, this time
singing Paloma Faith's "Upside
Down." Unlike last year,
however, when the votes were
tallied, Parker continued on to
the finals.
Two weeks later, she was
back, performing "Wild Young
Hearts" by the Noisettes for the
Tallahassee crowd the day after
Thanksgiving.
A day later, she received the
news she had won it all.
A theatre graduate at the

University of Florida, she says
she doesn't know which
Broadway musical she will be
seeing in New York.
What she does know,
however, is she wants to keep
singing.
"I like to sing with a smooth
style that is reminiscent of the
way vocalists would sing in the
days of Frank Sinatra, Judy
Garland and Ella Fitzgerald.
Those are the greats that I look
up to," she said, explaining the
trouble she has trying to
explain her musical tastes.
"It's interesting to find

contemporary artists who still
have the jazzy flair."
This year, she has taken to
the stage more and more, often
times being asked to sing the
National Anthem, including
during the opening ceremonies
of the 55th annual Florida
Forest Festival held in October.
Looking back on the
competition, she said her
favorite part was "getting on
stage and performing in front
of that many people," a far
cry from the time when she
had to shoo the dog out of the
room.

'Tron' lives up to its legacy for

a visually stunning adventure

When "Tron" hit theaters in 1982, personal
computers were still a few years away and the
idea of a digital network hadn't yet escaped
college campuses.
The film, which featured a hacker trapped in a
computer, did not light up the box office, nor was
it greeted with open arms by critics. Despite this,
the movie has lived on, becoming a cult classic
and seeping into our collective popular culture.
It would have been a surprise for Disney to
announce a sequel any time, but especially one
set for release 28 years after the first film.
The wait was worth it.
"Tron: Legacy" manages (CH .
to continue the story of
Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges)
while maintaining the feel
of "Tron" and doing so in a
way that it's not absolutely
necessary to have seen the
original.
The movie is one of the
most visually stunning films
of the year and, even better,
has a story strong enough to
hold up under the weight of
the effects.
"Legacy" begins eight
years after the end of "Tron,"
with Flynn now in charge of
Encom, the company which
once stole his video game
ideas and where he first
ventured into the digital
world of the Grid.
Since then, he married,
become a father and then a widower. He regales
young Sam with stories of a new Grid he created
with the help of the program Tron, promising to
take him there soon. Then one night, Flynn leaves
for work and never returns.
Twenty years later, Sam (Garrett Hedlund,
"Four Brothers") is content to float through life,
S playing the occasional prank on his father's
company, of which he remains the largest
shareholder. That is, until his father's friend Alan
(Bruce Boxleitner) tells him he received a page
from Flynn's old office, a number that has been
disconnected for years.
When Sam investigates, he discovers a secret
room and soon finds himself in the Grid, and, like
his father before him, he is captured and forced
to play in the games. There he meets Clu, who
is now in control of the Grid, and Quorra (Olivia
Wilde, "House M.D."), a program who wants to
help.
Now he must find his father, navigate the threats
of a subjugated Grid and discover a way out in a

digital world that doesn't have a reset button.
Since "Tron" was released when few people
had any knowledge of how computers worked,
the creators were able to play with the details,
such as having sentient programs like Tron and
the others trapped in the games. Almost three
decades later, the screenwriters don't have that
luxury, and do well to meld the world of "Tron"
with what we now know, creating the new Grid
to resemble what we have come to think about
virtual realities.
The story's biggest weakness is that, for the most
part, it relegates the plight of
the new Grid under the rule
of Clu to the background,
where it does not receive the
resolution it deserves. It's
somewhat understandable
the writers went in this
direction, however,
considering the obvious
"Matrix" comparisons that
would have resulted.
The film also skirts the
issue of Flynn being trapped
in the Grid for so long, which,
Sdue to the difference in time
there, would have been
hundreds, if not thousands,
of years. It would have been
an intriguing story path to
follow that is unfortunately
left unexplored.
On the acting side,
Hedlund is solid in the lead
role while computers (the
real kind) help Bridges play the duo roles of
Flynn and Clu. Wilde balances the naivety and
resourcefulness of Quorra quite well. Meanwhile,
Michael Sheen ("The Queen") is deliciously
over-the-top as the club-owner Castor, although
the role itself feels a bit out of place in the Grid.
One of the most powerful characters, however,
is the Grid itself, brought to life with stunning
visual effects. The imaginative updates to the
rather primitive effects of the first film are a treat
for fans who get to see data disks, light cycles
and the solar sail in all their glory. Not only does
"Tron" have the best special effects of the year,
it is one of only a handful of 3-D films released
this year to actually make decent use of the
technology.
Overall, "Tron: Legacy" is a fun, action-
packed, visually powerful film that is actually
family-friendly. You don't get too many of those
these days.
The movie is rated PG for sequences of sci-fi
action violence and brief mild language.
