Trouble at the pond?
After decades of maintaining the City Duck Pond, imagine their surprise when officials
learned that the city did not own the property where the downtown landmark is located. The
land is owned by the American Legion, whose main'post is located on the adjacent lot. For now,.
the Legion is trying to develop a plan of action regarding the pond and park, while the city-
attorney is researching whether or not'a city crew could be utilized in clearing u` the area,
as the Legion is a non-profit organization. In the meantime, the park area surrounding the
pond hasrbecome overgrown and littered with trash.
City residents will save an

of the county's largest employers
will see their annual water bills
soar by the tens of thousands.

Heat wave...a new thing?
I always believed the older you became, the
cooler you would stay. My childhood memories of
the "old folks" were Grandpa and Grandma sitting
in their rocker wrapped securely under a blanket.
Well, I want to go on record that. either that belief
is untrue or perhaps I'm not as old as I thought I
was. These last few days with temperatures
soaring to the 100 mark I've made it my business
to not stray too far from the cool air inside my
With the sound of the air conditioner whirring
softly to keep my house at a cool 75 degrees, it
boggles my mind to remember growing up
without air conditioning.
As I reflect on the lack of modern air, P ,Id
produce memories of sweaty hot d d
miserable nights, but somehow that is ae
memory it evokes. Instead I have lovely memories
of days in the sun as we kids ran and played until
the first shadows of twilight called us home.
With lightning bugs to light the way, cousins
and friends headed in different directions to their
homes. I grabbed my sister Leta's hand and we
raced acr-'oss the yard singing loudly, "Ain't no
buggers out tonight, Daddy shot them all in the
back." The singing was a sure-fire guarantee
against the fear of any obstacle that stood in our
way before reaching the safety of the back door.
The short space we covered was extra scary
once. my ,brother Ted 'discovered my fear of
Frankenstein. More often than not he would meet
-: us-hhalfw iviftl-hands'-.oat- stretched, walking on
stiff legs toward us with a chilling moan.
Once we encountered Frankenstein, no amount
of singing stopped our headlong race to the house
with tears streaming down our cheeks as we
struggled to breathe. Ted's laughter could be
heard as it echoed behind us. The laughter would.
abruptly stop when Mama stepped out to see
what the commotion was. "You silly girls" said
Mama. "It's your brother and he pulls the same
trick on you time after time."
We knew it was the truth but somehow it was
easy to forget when the daylight was fading and
night sounds of mourning doves and crickets
could be heard. With a stern rebuke from Mama,
Ted muttered, "I'm sorry." I was never convinced
that he was really sorry because once Mama
turned her back he would take up the
"Frankenstein" pose again. That pose was enough
to make us rush to wash away the day's dirt from
our -sweaty bodies. We knew we could not sit at
Mama's table looking like we had spent the day in
a mud hole.
After supper everyone headed to the front
porch. The front porch was a special place. It was
there we could unwind from the day's activities as
we slowly rocked or pushed ourselves in the
porch swing. Most of the time other folks would
join us and we caught the "evening news" as
Daddy, Mama and those visiting would share the
latest Taylor County events.
Listening to the banter of conversation that
flowed like a cool waterfall, our eyes would start
to droop. Mama would notice us and call,
"bedtime." That was a cue for Leta and me to
wash the sand from our feet before crawling into
bed. Stretching out'on the cool sheets with our
toes wiggling across the smooth surface we would
slowly turn over and over to capture the smell of
starch and sunshine that clung to the sheets. We
drifted off to sleep with the cool breeze blowing
from the windows that remained open day and
night for the entire summer.
Later on Daddy purchased fans to sit inside the
open windows. He said it would draw the cool
night air inside. So in a way I guess you could say
we enjoyed "air conditioning."
It's a mystery to me how we survived without
the things that seem so necessary now. Maybe
the days were not as hot or perhaps it was the
time spent on the front porch that allowed us to
cool down before bedding down.
Knowing the value of time spent on the front
porch, I try to recreate the nighttime ritual for my
family. I invite them to join me on the front porch
to rock awhile. Most of the time their answer is a
quick shake of the head and the words, "No way,
it's too hot." Sad to say, it appears they've
corrupted me. Here lately I glance at the rocking
chairs with a familiar longing then with a sigh, I
settle down to cool off in my store-bought air.

FWC: boaters should
be safe this weekend
Although the Labor Day holiday
is associated with the traditional
end of summer, recreational
boating in Florida and the need to
practice safe boating is always in
season. With more than 50
boating fatalities in Florida so far
this year, the Florida Fish and
Commission (FWC) is urging
boaters to be extra careful this
Labor Day weekend.
Many Floridians take to the
water during extended holiday
weekends, increasing the chances
of boating accidents. Boating
accidents usually are caused by
inattentiveness by the operator.
More than half of this year's
deaths were attributed to drowning
and may have, been avoided if the
victims had been wearing life
"The combination of paying
better attention and wearing life
jackets all the time while on the
water would, result in fewer
injuries and deaths each year," said
Capt. Richard Moore of the
FWC's Boating and Waterways
Most boating accident fatalities
were men and most accidents
involved a single vessel. Of the 52
deaths this year, 27 were due to
"It is not uncommon for young,
healthy men to drown," Moore
said. "No one expects to fall
overboard that is why it is
important to have a life jacket on,
whether you are anchored or under
There are a variety of life jackets
available to boaters. New styles
are much smaller, lighter and more
comfortable to wear than the
traditional vest life jacket. One
new style, the "belt pack," is worn
around the waist. A "suspender"
style also is available. These types
of life jackets are inflatable and
some models activate
automatically if the wearer falls
into the water.
In anticipation of heavy boat
traffic this weekend, FWC will

promote boating safety and strictly

Joe Perry of Aerosmith) and
guitarist Charlie Karp. The same

included Eric Gale.

Before 'Heroes' saves the world
again, catch season one on DVD
With August winding down and with it the last hints
of the summer blockbusters, we prepare to enter
September and the action turns'to television with the
debut of the fall season. The networks have prepared a
plethora of new shows in their attempts to garner our
attention. By next June, few will remain on the air. It's
nothing againstthis year's freshman class of shows, it's,
just what happens evety year.
The networks seem more and more anxious to kill a
show at the first sign of poor ratings, even if they don't
have anything suitable to put in its place. Fox just
canceled one of its summer shows, "Anchorwoman,"
after only one episode. I'm not .
saying it was worth keeping M0
on the network, but talk about
a short honeymoon.
People forget that in the
past, before the heat 3
competition from cable and ,-
the Internet, networks \,ere

NBC's bright shining light, however, for last season
was definitely "Heroes," the network's super-hero serial
created by Tim Cring.,
The first season of the hit show was release as a DVD
box set this week.
Taking a real-life approach to..a subject covered by
comic books for decades, "Heroes" follows a group of
people who find that they have special powers and have
to decide what they will do with them.
"In recent days, a seemingly random group of
individuals has emerged with what can only be

almost any injury. With the help of a friend, she is testing
the limits of her power.
Hiro Nakamura: A Japanese office worker, he tells
his friends that he can "bend the space/time continuum"
speeding up or slowing down time as well as being able,
to "teleport." Despite his friend's skepticism he is
dedicated to learning how to use his powers to help the
world and live up to his name of Hiro.
Isaac Mendez: A heroin-addicted painter in New
York, he has the ability to paint the future, but thinks that
he can only do it while he is high. His also writes and
draws a comic book series called "9th Wonder," which
tells the story of a Japanese office worker with the
ability to "bend the space/time continuum" by the name

strange dreams about flying and begins to think he
actually does have such an ability.

pop culture and "Heroes" made its spot as well. ,
In addition to the first 23 episodes contained by the
seven-disc set of "Heroes:. Season One" released
Tuesday, the collection also offers a number of extras
including cast commentaries, the 73-minute unaired
pilot episode (which was cut down to the one that was
aired), some 50 deleted scenes from various episodes
and several making-of features.
While it's impossible to watch every show on
television, not to mention unhealthy, "Heroes" Was
. .definitely the best new show I caught from last season.
In fact, it sneaked its way to number two on my must-
watch list behind "Lost" each week.
