TCSO cruiser crashes, explodes

A Taylor County Sheriffs deputy
is alive and recovering-after a

which his patrol car caught fire and
ignited ammunition inside the
vehicle that hampered efforts to
control the blaze.

Leadership at Taylor County
schools will remain at status quo,
with the school board re-
appointing all administrators to
their current posts.
The action came during the
board's regular meeting Tuesday
night and drew little discussion. *
Prior to the move, two local
parents expressed their concerns
regarding on-going issues at the
high school.
"I'm here tonight to ask you to
make changes at the high school. I
believe that changes should be
made to help improve not only on
the academic level but also with
the athletic programs. The
problems are real. We have asked
before that both the teachers and
administrators be held accountable
and we are asking again. It feels
like we are settling for whoever
says they want a job when it
comes to coaching positions and
other extracurricular activities. We
need to work harder to make the
high school more successful
academically and athletically,"
Glenn Young said.
Backing up those comments,
Michael Allbritton said,. "We
should be looking for high quality,
coaches who put whatever sport
they are coaching as their number
one priorities. Coaches who not
only know the game, but can also
teach it."
School board member Danny
Lundy told the men "your words
didn't go unheard. We all want the
very best for our district."
Representative Kenneth Dennis
noted that the board had recently
held a workshop where the topic
was continuity throughout the
system.
"That's what we want and that's
what we're looking at," he said.
The following administrative re-
appointments were made: Taylor

according to a report filed by
Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. S. A.
Hooppell.
"The vehicle then ran off the
west side of the roadway and

impacted some trees prior 'to
catching on fire and burning,"
Hooppell said.
A truck driver at the scene said
he saw the crash and rushed to help
Thompson out of the burning
vehicle.
TSCO Capt. Audie Towles said
Thursday that Thompson had been

kept overnight at Tallahassee
Memorial Hospital, but he was in
"good spirits."
He declined to comment on a
possible cause of the crash until the
department hears from the
highway patrol, which is leading
the investigation. He said

Long-awaited paving to start soon?

Long awaited improvements to
Green Street could begin within
the next several weeks.
That's after the Taylor County
Commission approved a value-
engineered plan presented by
County Engineer Kenneth Dudley
Tuesday night as well as an

agreement with the Florida
Department of Transportation
(FDOT) for additional funds for
the project.
The county had received some
$859,000 in state funding from the

received, however, was for more
than $2.7 million from contractor

to award the county an additional

'Waterfronts' designation

opens door to grants &

more for Steinhatchee
Steinhatchee residents are invited to a meeting Wednesday, June 27, to
discuss* issues, future visions and to kick-off the coastal community's :
designation as a Florida Waterfronts Community.
The meeting, set for 1 p.m., will be held at the Steinhatchee Community
Center.
"We want to talk about everybody's ideas," said County Grants -
Coordinator Melody Cox, who spearheaded the drive to receive the
Waterfronts designation.
She said the discussions will include public access issues, parks and
trails as well as historical projects. Cox. said she was interested in
investigating, Fort Frank Brook, a Seminole War-era fort thought to have
been located in the area.
The meeting will also serve as a launching point to develop committees,
including one to pursue a federal designation as a Playful City USA,
which includes a $25,000 grant for a playground.
Steinhatchee was officially designated a Waterfronts Community May
15 when Florida Department of Community Affairs Secretary Thomas G.
Pelham sent a letter to the county declaring the agency's decision.
"Waterfronts Florida is one of the toughest designations to receive in
the state," Cox said.

STATE SEIZING
BEACH LANDS?
Jim Ross appeared before the
Taylor County Commission with a
letter from the Internal
Improvement Trust Fund
suggesting that the state would
"assert its ownership of all lands
lying below mean high water
mark, which is set in Taylor

County at 1.79 feet."
, According to Ross, who owned
property at Ezell Beach, this action
would deprive him of a 14-acre
tract and is "but an opening wedge
toward taking extensive acreage in
Taylor and other coastal counties."

Jacl' Burke Jr., the state
representative from Perry,
announced that he' would seek re-
election to his post, representing

Fishing Report

Large redfish and trout

lead this week's report

BY PAT MCGRIFF
One More Cast Guide Service
Trout and red fishing has been
outstanding, for my charters, the
last three days! The large trout are
still in 4 4.5 feet of water while
my reds have come from 3 3.5
feet of water. Most all our fish
have bit live pinfish under Cajuns
.while a few of the keeper reds have
:hit Thunder-Spins.
Friday, Brett Rodgers and Keith
:Watson with Ken Cleveland, all of
:Lake Park and Valdosta, Ga., had a
their limit with three fish over 20
iinches long. Ken caught the
largest trout with a 24.5 inch
trout, while Brett finished with
top overall honors with a 6.8
pound red!
Saturday, I had Kurt and Kim
Boesger of Hampton, Ga., and we
limited out again with three reds
(two on Thunder-Spins with the
:willow-leafed blades). The largest
:red was 6.4 pounds!
Sunday, I took Eric and Ginny
:Darden of Clermont and we had an
:outstanding catch. Our top five
-trout weighed 16.3 pounds! We
:had three fish over 23 inches long.
;Eric and Giny doubled on reds
with one over 6 pounds! We
caught all our fish on live.pinfish
under Cajun Thunders.

The fishing has been good on
the last two hours of the incoming
tide and the first two hours of the
outgoing. Folks who went out
early this past weekend got their
feelings hurt as they attempted to
fish' the last three hours of the
falling tide.

Several boats had grouper and
snapper offshore, including Rusty
Smith of Madison, who had a bait
pump go down and lost his live
bait; so after only two grouper and
a livewell full of dead bait.... No
problem...Rusty opted to go on
out deeper for snapper instead.
That was the right decision, as
they brought in some beautiful
snapper to 7.1 pounds..I weighed
that one, and two more of them as
well, which were right at six
pounds! Rusty said he was in the
seventies for the snapper.
That's it 'til next week.

'Leave No Trace'leaves lasting

impression with its readers...

Busy with a project, I have not
had the time to do much reading
over the past month or so. The
project, to be announced soon, has'
been a joy to work on, but I've
been receiving some flack from the
regular readers of "Page turners."
So, here's a good book for you
until I get back to regular columns.
"Leave No Trace" by Hannah
Nyala is a book I read several years
ago and have been meaning to
review ever since. It was one of
those nondescript novels that pass
through my hands everyday and if
it hadn't of been for a customer's
recommendation, I'd never had the
pleasure of reading it. I soon
realized there was nothing
ordinary about this book.
It opens with the main character,
Tally Nowata, stranded in
Australia's Tanami Desert. She is
down to her last gallon of water
and hasn't eaten for eight days. We
find out she is a search-and-rescue
tracker from the Grand Teton
mountains of the U.S. and is in the
desert on vacation. Her husband
Paul is doing research on the wild'
dingoes of the area and she's only
along for the ride. One day, Paul
leaves camp in the truck to go the
100 miles into Alice Springs to
pick up his 11-year-old daughter

Jo, who just arrived from the
States. They were due back the
next day. But after two weeks pass
with no sign of them, and long
after Tally's food has iun out, she
makes the decision to make her
way across the desert for help. She
eventually encounters them, but
finds Paul murdered and Jo near-
death. The rest of the novel
chronicles Tally and Jo's journey as
they struggle to survive and elude
Paul's killers, who are hot on her
trail.

Rocky Mountains. However, these
tactics often fail because her'
training is in surviving in
mountainous regions, not the
desert. Tally, and her young charge
Jo, must learn to adapt as they
battle the desert.
As much as I like to read about
our great state of Florida, there's
nothing like reading about an*
environment alien to me to get my:
blood pumping. The descriptions:
of the Tanami Desert plant and
animal life were fascinating and

Paae

The Tanami Desert is a vast area
of red sandplains broken up by
hills and ranges. Watering holes
are few and far between, edible
plants are scarce and rainfall is
virtually nonexistent. -It is one of
the most arid and remote places on
the planet. For almost anyone else,
being stranded in this environment
would mean certain death. But
Tally draws on her knowledge of
survival tactics learned in the

Turners
By POLLY WALLER
lent an air of the exotic to the story.
Good stuff in a summer read.
Before becoming an author Ms.
Nyala was a search-and-rescue
tracker in the Grand Teton
mountains. Her first book, "Point
Last Seen," was a memoir of her
experience in the Kalahari Desert
with her two young children.
"Leave No Trace" is her first
attempt at writing fiction and she
makes the transition admirably.

Take a trip to Terabithia
ITake trip. a

When "Bridge to Terabithia" hit theatres in February,
I called it one of the "most honest" children's movies I'd
seen. I said-that despite the marketing campaign waged
by Disney before its release.
The movie was given its DVD release Tuesday, and
the marketing people are still up to their usual tricks. In
fact, the director and producer actually mention it on
their audio commentary included on the DVD.
The movie's marketing campaign--full of quick cuts,
special effects and ominous voice-overs--is the second
most deceptive set of trailers I've ever seen
("Highlander: Endgame" tops that list' and half the
scenes in its trailers neyer showed up in the film).
That being said, "Bridge to Terabithia," is much more
than the trailers let on.
The film is the second adaptation of the. 1977
Newbery Award-winning book by Katherine Paterson
(the first was a 1985
made-for-tele% ision
movie i. Her son. Da id

the pnncipal announces a
ne%% girl will be joining
their class. Her name is
Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb), and with her short
blond'hair and high-top shoes, she doesn't need to win a
race to stand out. She wins it anyway, even though the
race was supposed to be just for the boys.i
Stung by his defeat, the two don't exactly get off on
the right foot, but after they find out they're living across
the street from each other, they soon become friends;
Jesse is fascinated by Leslie's ability to make up
stories, a talent he first attributes to her author parents.
He likes to draw, but has never received the
encouragement from his parents that she has from hers.
Racing each other after school one fateful day, .'hey
come upon a creek and an old rope hanging down from
a tree. The two take turns swinging on it until Leslie
decides to jump off and land on the other side. Jesse
follows her and they find themselves--with the benefit of
their imaginations and the movie's special effects--in the
mythical world of Terabithia. With dragonflies
magically becoming their subjects and an abandoned
tree house their castle, they become king and queen,
tasked with protecting their world from the Dark One
and his minions.
Terabithia becomes a safe haven for the two, away
from bullies and money troubles and annoying sisters.
They may be king and queen in their imaginations, but

at school Jesse is tormented by a pair of boys and eighth-
grader Janice Avery demands a toll from just about
everyone to use the bathroom: everyday troubles for
most fifth-graders.
Home life is not a picnic either. For Jesse, his father
(played admirably by Robert Patrick) works double and
triple shifts at the local hardware in an attempt to keep
the bill collectors away.
For Leslie, it is much better, but even she feels
'somewhat neglected while her parents type away at their
newest books. When they finish, the family celebrates--
with Jesse in tow--by painting a room in their new old
farmhouse. "You'have a painter's touch," Leslie's father
says, and Jesse beams.
I got the feeling that Jesse is afraid he is being forced
to grow up too fast. Leslie is the anchor to his own
childhood. Rarelyhave I seen a film (or read a book)
that reminded me so,
fully of what it is like
to be a child: the good
and the bad.
The v movie rests
totally on the ability of
its two young actors,
and they do a beautiful
job. Robert Patrick
walks a tightrope with
Jesse's father as a stem
and o'erforked man.
but a loving father all
the same. In a lesser
film, his character
would haie been the
villain. Bailee
Madison steals almost
ever scene she's in as
Jesse"' younger sister
NlMay Belle. Zooey
Deschanel is a fun
addition to the cast as
the school's music
"TJ h ortunht s is
true with most
fantasies, the real
world will eventually
intrude and in 'The
SBridge to Terabithia,"
its does so with tragic
consequences. The
final third of the filmis
a melancholy affair,
but how it is handled is
really what elevates the movie from average children's
fare to a family classic.
SParents should take note that the events in question gre
dramatic .indeed and maybe a bit too traumatic for
younger children (and older movie critics).
This movie will certainly spark conversations
between parents and children after the credits roll. In this
day and 'age where kids spent more and more time in
front of their computers and televisions, perhaps that is
Sthe film's greatest.achievemtnent.
"Bridge to Terabithia" is rated PG for thematic
elements including bullying, some peril and mild
language.
The DVD release, available in widecreen and regular
formats, includes a 14-minute featurette "Behind the
,Book: .The Themes of Bridge to Terabithia"' with
interviews with the lead actors, the book's author,
Katherine Paterson, as well as librarians and teachers.
SA six-minute featurette examines the film's special-
effects. Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb,
"chaperoned" by producer Lauren Levine, provide one
commentary trae~le with director Gabor Csupo, writer
Jeff Stockwell, and producer Hal Lieberman on the
second.

"The kids in the audience loved:
the songs," he said. -,
"I'd play a game with them. I'd

intervention (in a proceeding initiated by
another party) will be only io the
discretion of the presiding officer upon
the filing of o motion in compliance with n
Rule 28-106.205, Florida Administrative
Code. A petition that disputes the
material facts on which the

number of each petitioner; the name,
address, and telephone number of the
petitioner's representative, if any; the

ultimate facts alleged, as the rules and
statutes which entitle the petitioner to
relief; and (g) A statement of the relief
sought by the petitioner, stating
precisely the action that the petitioner
wants the Department to take. Because
the administrative hearing process is
designed to formulate final agency, the
filing of a petition means that the
Department's final action may be
different from the position taken by it in
this notice. Persons whose substantial
interests will be affected by any such
final decision of the Department hove
the right to petition to become party to
the proceeding, in accordance with
the requirements set forth above. In
addition to requesting an administrative
hearing, any petitioner may elect to
pursue mediation. The election may be
accomplished by filing with the
Department a mediation agreement
with all parties to the proceeding (i.e ,
the applicant, the Department, and any
person who has filed a timely and
sufficient .petition for a hearing). The
agreement must contain all the
