Three masked. robbers walked
into the Cash Advance office
Tuesday evening and robbed the
establishment at gunpoint.
Perry Police Department Det.
Cla Parker said three tall, slender
mdi\ iduaks wearing' camouflage,
clothes, with gloves and masks,
entered the store about 6:15 p.m.
They walked up to the clerk with a
gun and demanded money.
When the clerk told them the,
money was in the back of the store,
the four went there and retrieved
the money. The robbers then
demanded the woman open the
safe and the robbers "cleaned it
out," said Parker.
The thie\ es then told the woman
to: lie on the floor with her head
stuck in the safe and fled out the
back door

Parker said this was .a
particularly hard case to
investigate because of how well it
was planned.
"The individuals who came into
the store were covered from head
to toe," said Parker. "They were
covered so well, that no skin
showed anywhere, making it
impossible for the clerk to
distinguish the. race or gender.
"The clerk was not even able to
tell the race by their voices," he
.added. "She said-their voices were
very undistinctive."
Parker said he had found one
witness who had seen the suspects
enter the store, but was unable to
give any other pertinent
information.
"About a year ago, a group-of
individuals, suspected to be, from

the Jacksonville area, was going
around, from town to town in north
Florida and south Georgia, robbing
stores like Cash Advance," said
Parker.
"They used the same 'take-over'
method that the robbers used
Tuesday. We're going under the
assumption at this point that they
may be related.
"We have very, limited
information on this' current
robbery, so we're asking that
anyone who was near the store or
maybe just driving by and saw
something suspicious to please call
us at 584-5513. All callers
may remain anonymous," he
added.
Cash Advance is located on
South Jefferson Street, beside the
Wal-Mart parking lot.

Eight apply for county administrator

After two-months of advertising,
the county commission has
recei% ed eight applications to
replace County Administrator
Budd. Humphries, who announced
his retirement in June.
Commissioners decided at their
meeting last,week to move forward
with hiring Humphries'-
replacement. Originally the board
agreed to begin the search for a
new administrator, but to wait until

after the November election before
actually hiring someone.
Their reasoning was since
commissioners Daryll Gunter and
Jack Brown are not running for re-
election, there will be two new
members following the election.
Last week,'however, Brown said
he had reconsidered and suggested
moving forward. The rest of the
board agreed. Since the
advertisement for the position

states it is open until filled,
commissioners will be able to
begin interviewing candidates as
soon as they like. The issue is on
the agenda for Tuesday's board
meeting.
Humphries agreed last week to
extend his contract, which expires
next month, to 30 days after a
' replacement has been hired, but no
later than Dec. 31.
'According to information

provided to commissioners.fdr next
week's regular board meeting, the
board will be considering which of
the eight candidates to interview.
The candidates and prior related
work experience are:
Lyndon Bonner, four years, city
manager, Bunnell; three years,
director of public service, City of
Dunnellon; five years, planner,
Wildwood;
James Gallagher, two years,

manager, Dundee; eight years, risk
manager, Cocoa; three years,
executive director, Sebastian
Partnership; three years, mayor and
CEO, 'Sebastian;
Cynthia Godbey,, five years,
project manager, Summit
Professional Services; four years,

City, county may consolidate

animal control departments?

The Taylor County Commission
and Perry City Council will be
presented with a proposed
interlocal agreement at their
respective meetings Tuesday night
which would consolidate animal
control services into one unit.
Talks between the city and
county .have been ongoing for
more than a year about ways to
consolidate certain departments.
Committees were established to
examine specifically animal.
control and building/planning.
The committee for animal
control appeared ready to present
findings before a joint meeting of,

the council, and commission, but
that meeting was canceled to allow
more time to examine the numbers.
Since that time, no further
meetings have been held between
the two governing boards. *I
Commissioner Malcolm Page,
who sits on the animal control
committee, mentioned during
meetings of late that the committee
was working on a solution.
. According to the draft interlocal
agreement, which was included in
the informational packet issued
Wednesday to commissioners for
next week's meeting, the county
would take over all animal control

services.
The county would assume all
legal responsibilities and personnel
..would be considered county
employees.
Animal control would be located
at the city animal shelter with
improvements at a cost of no more
than $30,000. The county would
supply $9,000 of that total.
"The county will provide .244
hour emergency response service..
to handle emergencies...or requests
for assistance from the city's police.".
department," the agreement states.

Roseheads meet twice in

By CHERYL GREGORY
Publicity
Members of Perry's original
chapter of the Red Hat Society,
the Roseheads, met at 2 p.m. on
Wednesday, July 19, at Marshall
-Health Facility. All present were
Red Hatters (50 and older). The
ladies helped serve refreshments to
the guests and then entertained
them with a colorful fashion
show. Each lady modeled her,
outfit as the emcee, described in
detail the dress, skirt set, or pants
suit. The many different
accessories were highlighted,
including much more than the
usual rings, scarves, bracelets,
earrings, and watches: there was
tulle, feathers, gloves, and antique
glo% c holder, and a fan that added a
special charm to the already lovely
outfits. The ladies especially
enjoyed visiting with the guests of
the facility.
Then on Saturday, July 29, 15
Red Hatters (50 and older) and two
Pink Hatters (under 50) met at 1
p.m., at Roy's Restaurant in
Steinhatchee, for their monthly
luncheon/meeting. The ladies
began arriving about 12:30 p.m.
and enjoyed visiting together.
Debi Limoges, secretary/treasurer,
called everyone to order. She
thanked the July Committee of
June Lytle, Barbara Patrick,
Debbie Beach and Suezette
Stephens for planning this
luncheon. Barbara Patrick then
welcomed everyone and asked for
any announcements. "We need

people to volunteer for the Float
Committee," add Limoges. Lunch
orders were taken, the blessing
was said, and visiting continued.
After a delicious seafood meal,
Patrick called the group to order.
She presented Stephens, dressed in
a purple hatand a red outfit, with
a gift in honor of her July
birthday. The ladies sang "Happy
Birthday" to her. Names were
drawn for a large variety of door
prizes. .Red Hat watches,
bracelets, and purses were among
the many door prizes. The July

Committee had filled red and
purple drawstring bags with.
different candies and then attached
a red and purple teapot pin to each.
There was a bag at each place
setting for the ladies to take upon
leaving.
Queen Mother Hattie Adams
reminded everyone that Patrick and
Beach were leaving on Thursday,
Aug. 3, for a Red Hat Cruise to
Alaska, where they will meet Sue
Ellen Cooper, founder of the Red
Hat Society.
Planning committees -are in

place for luncheons the last
Saturday of August and

October will be very busy with
planning and decorating the float,
so there will be no luncheon in,
October. The November luncheon
will be held Nov. 4 (the first
Saturday), and a group has already
volunteered for November's.
luncheon. "Mark your calendars,
for these Saturdays, and look for
the details of each luncheon in
your invitations," concluded
Adams.

Martelle Shiver, Cheryl Gregory, Laura Taylor, Patricia Lindsey, Nancy Simons, Hattie

Williams awarded for children's advocacy

Sondra Lanier Williams,
executive director of the Florida
Network of Children's Advocacy

Centers (FNCAC), was recognized
for her "unwavering commitment
to Florida's children" by Senator

and Gubernatorial Candidate Rod
Smith, on behalf of Florida's
children's advocacy centers. The
award was presented in June
during the opening session of the
FNCAC Multidisciplinary
Conference.on child abuse where
Smith spoke to child protection
professionals from around the
state.
Smith has historically been the
one to present the network's
Leadership Award, and the plan
was for him to surprise his wife,
DeeDee Smith, who did not know
that she had been selected as
recipient of this year's award. In
fact, it was Williams who was
surprised when he also presented
her with an award.
Smith said, "Sondra Williams
has dedicated her career to fighting
for abused and neglected children.
It is an honor to present this award
to someone who has made a
difference in the lives of so many."
Smith commented on Williams'
advocacy for children in the

legislature, as well as her vision for
moving the state network forward.
"It was wonderful to be
recognized for doing a job that you
love, but it was especially
meaningful for me to have Senator
Smith present this award,"
Williams said. "He has worked
endlessly for children as a
prosecutor and then in the
Legislature, putting the best
interests of Florida's children
ahead of politics and personal
interests. When I think of a child
advocate, Senator Smith is the
ultimate example, "-she said.
The Florida Network of
Children's Advocacy Centers
(FNCAC), whose vision is
"Florida's Children- Free from
Abuse," is a non-profit
public/private collaboration with
its state office in Perry. Children's
Advocacy Centers (CACs) are
"child-friendly facilities where
child victims of abuse may be
interviewed by specially trained
forensic interviewers, undergo

medical examinations, and receive
therapy,", said Williams. "CACs
reduce trauma to child victims by
coordinating investigations and
services, reducing the number of
times a child must be interviewed,
facilitating effective joint,
investigations, increasing
prosecution rates, and providing
for prompt administering of mental
health and other appropriate
services. CACs are community
based, so each is uniquely-

designed to meet the needs of its
individual community," she added.
Williams urges local friends and
supporters to look for the statewide
"Tough Guys for Kids...The Power
of Men Talking to Men...Stop
Child Abuse Campaign" to kick off
here in Taylor County this October
during the Florida Forest Festival.
2007 Calendars picturing Taylor
County "Tough Guys" will be sold
throughout the State of Florida as
one of this year's top fundraisers.

Sondra Williams, of Perry, is shown with
Gubernatorial Candidate Rod Smith.

"There is a Grief"
(Author Unknown)
There is a grief that ages the face and hardens the heart
Yet softens the spirit....
A grief that casts shadows on the eyes
Yet broadens the mind...
A grief that keeps the pain and has no words
But increases the understanding...
There is a grief that breaks the heart and wounds the soul,
That lasts and lasts and can shatter in a minute,
But will inspire for a lifetime.

Recognize this building?
The Florida State Archives heading on this 1974 photo simply reads "Wooden building, Perry, Florida."
However, given its location and appearance, we're sure there's more to the story. If you have information
on this old depot, please give us a call at 584-5513 or e-mail newsdesk@perrynewspapers.com. The
building in the background has the distinctive look of the old "triangle" laundry, located on West Green
Street.
